Le Creux de L'Enfer, also known as The Hollow of Hell, is a site with a rich history. It was once home to factories powered by the La Durolle river, where knives were made under harsh working conditions. Today, it has been transformed into a contemporary art center and cultural exhibition space. Nearby, the Bois Noirs forest offers stunning mountainous landscapes for hiking and mountain biking. Visitors can embark on the challenging 15.
(Translated by Google) A must, it's dizzying and as much for the history as the 👀, and to access it on foot from the old town it's 🥵😬. Go through the rue du 4 September, there are steps, a piece of advice, don't go there with complainers 🤣. A free art exhibition space, right next door, cutlery, tapas bar, it's quite pleasant.

(Translated by Google) A timeless place, a mix of industrial wasteland and modern, developed spaces, such as a museum and an art gallery. A walk that takes you back in time to the era when the valley's factories were operating at full capacity. A lovely little stroll and some great photos to be taken. (Translated by Google) The art center was unfortunately closed for construction until 2024, so it was not possible to visit, but from the outside it is a suggestive place to see the former abandoned knife factories of Thiers. Too bad that the metal walkway on the bridge was rusty and therefore unsafe (but this is also part of the charm of the place). Recommended for those who are fascinated by abandoned places. The Musée de la Coutellerie, also known as the Cutlery Museum, is a must-visit in Thiers. It showcases a collection of 700 knives and blades crafted in the city over five centuries. Visitors can explore workshops and demonstrations highlighting how Thiers produces over 70% of France's cutlery. The museum offers an informative experience, including a short film, exhibits of locally made knives, and a captivating sound and light show on blade forging.
Great experience and very informative for both kids and adults. We learnt a lot about traditional knife-making and evolution over the centuries. The museum is split in two parts and you can enjoy demonstrations of different techniques. Some of the pieces are unique. The tour was guided and we had lots of fun. The guide tried to connect and make the experience interesting.

This is only for the French speakers. This is made up of 2 buildings. One speaks about history of the region, city and its evolution. 2nd building talks about how the knives were made in earlier days ascompared to today. Includes a light & sound show.
Arvind Y — Google review
Two part visit starting with a short film and then various rooms exhibiting knives made in Thiers. This is followed by part II which is held in a different location (about 40 metres away) where there is a sound and light show of forging blades and concludes with a demonstration and explanation of the shaping, sharpening and polishing of blades. All in all, a thoroughly entertaining and informative visit.
Robert A — Google review
Museum in 3 different places. Most interesting was the workshop and people actually demonstrated techniques. Didn't go to see the outside section 3km away as we moved on, but fascinating.

Ok so it’s all in French but a great little museum to teach you about the history of knife making in the area
Luc H — Google review
Interesting museum in two parts. The first building (No.23) on the aptly named Rue de la Coutellerie, focuses on 800 years of knife-making in Thiers. The second building (No. 58) has workshop demonstrations of cutlery-making skills and more galleries displaying the range of utensils, from professional knives (surgical utensils, gardeners’ knives, marine knives, vintners’ knives, electricians’ knives) to scissors & gadget knives (with lighters, rulers, thermometers & pens incorporated), all made in Thiers over the years. I've written about Thiers in Mechtraveller.

The Vallée des Rouets is a delightful location to explore, where one can discover the historical mills with wheels that line a section of the Durolle river. It is essential to have certain equipment before visiting this scenic spot. Additionally, it serves as an excellent opportunity to witness Thiers' ancient forging techniques and connect with nature. The small trek through the area provides an immersive experience, showcasing not only the last operational mill but also the remnants of other mills.

These buildings were used to "put the blade to the edge" on a millstone made of red Vosges sandstone, walled by a water wheel. This valley is open year-round, free of charge, for trails, dog leashes, and drinking water points. The Friends of Thiernois Heritage Association offers free tours of this valley outside of the Cutlery Museum's opening hours and in the off-season upon request. The "Chez Lyonnet" spinning wheel is open from July to August, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Hiking equipment and sturdy footwear are recommended, as the slope is steep. Église Saint-Symphorien du Moutier is a small Romanesque church that has stood the test of time, with its origins dating back to the 6th century. Rebuilt in the 10th and 11th centuries, it was affiliated with a nearby Benedictine abbey and later handed over to Cluny. The church was remodeled in the 19th century but still retains its Romanesque style and impressive capitals.
(Translated by Google) The founding date of the abbey of Saint-Symphorien du Moutier is not known, which usually dates back to the 6th century. In 1011 it was handed over to Cluny, and from then on the temple was rebuilt in Romanesque style, with the magnificent capitals that it still preserves. The church was renovated on several occasions, receiving various additions, although its current form dates back to the end of the 19th century, when, being semi-ruinous, it was decided to amputate the apse, part of the naves and some chapel, reducing it almost by half. Despite this, and its poor exterior appearance, its interior retains its majesty, with magnificent Romanesque capitals and a very successful polychrome that allow us to get a certain idea of the glories of a great Cluniac house like this one in San Sinforiano. The same can be said of the successful reconstruction of the apse - perhaps the purists disagree in this opinion - on the left wall of which the keystone of the vault of the disappeared chapel of Saint Anthony was placed, with the arms of William of Montboissier, abbot of Moutier at the beginning of the 16th century.

(Translated by Google) We had contracted with this company in 2024 for the maintenance of a 2000m² plot (mowing, shrub trimming, and weeding a driveway). After a year, we were dissatisfied with the quality of the work and the irregularity of the mowing. The company retained us (and asked us to withdraw the previous review) promising improvement. Well, we were very wrong! Between the beginning of April and the beginning of June, we only had one mowing, which resulted in significant damage: burst gutters, broken flower pots, a ripped compost bin, and damaged heat pump cable. The gutters were repaired, but for the rest, we were promised a goodwill gesture, which, like the May mowing, never arrived... Nestled in the heart of Normandy, Pirou Castle is a charming 12th-century fortress steeped in local legend and history. According to folklore, its besieged inhabitants transformed into geese to evade Viking invaders—a whimsical tale that adds character to this picturesque site. The castle underwent significant renovations in the 17th century, enhancing its beauty and allure.
Well worth a visit. Guided tours in French but was given an English guide book to take along on our self guided tour which was quite nice. You can easily spend an hour and half here in the morning and have enough time to linger and read all the info plaques. A similar tapestry to the Bayeux Tapestry is housed here and is just as lovely.
Renee I — Google review
It's a beautiful little castle. Its history is very interesting and you can get a brochure describing it in a lot of different languages (not just French, which is very helpful). It's the only castle we've visited in Normandy where you can go inside and see a lot of the rooms that have been restored and you can even walk on the castle walls. Entrance fee is 7€ per person, but they use it for the restauration.

A wonderful moated 12th century castle, restored this century from a ruin. €7 closed Tuesday. Most of the castle is accessible, living rooms, kitchen, cider press etc. The towers and roof have great views. The old lodgings give a good feeling of how it was to live here. Amazing tapestry (in the style of Bayeaux) shows the history of the castle and its fortunes and fall. Definitely worth a visit.
Gill C — Google review
A pleasant little castle worth a quick visit if passing by. The long history is interesting, with its coaching fortunes through the centuries. Instant rampart walk as well.
Gavin B — Google review
Pretty chateau well worth a visit, we spent about 1.5hrs there on a rainy morning exploring the castle, we did the battlements walk twice as the kids loved the tricky spiral staircases and being up on top of the castle. The staff were welcoming and gave us an information sheet in English explaining the history of the castle. The facilities are quite basic, no cafe but a little gift shop, not great if you have any mobility problems.

Viking village event. The ambience of the chateau is quite magical. Best visited when it is less busy. When they organise big events the parking provisions are inadequate

Not worth the drive. Beautiful outside but gardens aren't that nice and its impossible to know if it's open or closed

(Translated by Google) The architecture of this castle is very, very beautiful. Only, it cannot be visited. You can see the park, half of which is a simple field. Fortunately, a pretty little chapel, with its stained glass windows kindly commented on by the chatelaine, can be admired. Ah, I forgot the so-called Japanese garden, non-existent. In short, when you leave, you have the unpleasant feeling of having been taken for pigeons.

(Translated by Google) Athletics track that many cities could be jealous of. In tartan, with all official markings, 6 lane track for the 400m lap and 8 lanes for the 100m. A very good chance to have such an installation in Thiers, even if it is only to do its "ranges" for the very modest long-distance runner that I am. Thanks to the city of Thiers for this infrastructure.

(Translated by Google) The magnificence of Romanesque art in rural Auvergne. It's one of my homes. Beauty has no religion, you just have to take it where you see it, where you hear it, where it is.
