The Museo del Desierto, also known as the Desert Museum, is a must-visit natural history museum in Saltillo, Mexico. Opened in 1999, it offers an insightful exploration of the Chihuahuan Desert, showcasing its formation and the diverse species that call it home. The museum features captivating exhibits on the desert's unique ecosystem and geological wonders such as sand dunes.
My wife and I visited friends in Arteaga and went here with them. All of the museum is in Spanish, although there is an option to follow along in English with a QR Code compatible with the Spotify APP. The museum will take you around 3 hours to see everything, it is really enjoyable, although long. It will take through the beginning of mankind, from the Big Bang, up until present day. There are live animals outside in exhibits, as well as, snakes and other creatures inside, towards the end of the museum tour. A must-see, if you enjoy museums, although, plan accordingly for a time consuming visit.

My second trip to Saltillo included the Museo del Desierto. Many locals recommend this museum to visit. As an independent author in which my book project was specifically on the Chihuahuan Desert, this museum offers excellent exhibits of the Chihuahuan Desert, the largest in North America. The paleontology exhibits are very deep here and the Chihuahuan Desert is very rich in discovery of many dinosaurs and periods existing in the area. But that's just one major part of this museum. The geological exhibits here are the creme of the crop, they definitely steal the show. I have never seen a spectacular display of rocks, minerals, and precious gems. Also to note, the reptile exhibit is pretty amazing as well, every type of rattlesnake found in these southern and southwest regions are here, including Guila Monsters. Also there is a Mexican Wolves exhibit which are very rare, and endangered. Plan on spending a long time at this amazing location, it is a very large museum and has a very diverse offering of exhibits. You will not be disappointed!
Robert J — Google review
This museum is amazing! So many natural history wonders, and most fossils found locally! The crystal cave exhibit was breathtaking, the mineral and gemstone section was gorgeous, the animals on display are well kept and look happy/healthy, the history of the Mexican people was well represented, you can observe cave drawings and take a step through the many eras of earth’s history, and they had many live activities to observe as well as an outdoor area with live animals as well. I really enjoyed seeing the paleontology lab. The gift shop is well stocked, there is a cactus exhibit annd nursery you can purchase from, snacks annd drinks are available to purchase, and there are many guides on staff to answer questions. It truly is a fascinating place, and everyone who visits and/or lives in Coahuila should take the time to soak in the wonders of this spectacular museum!
Morgan A — Google review
Fantastic Museum. Lots of geology, history, and paleontology. Displays that bring the past to life. Well worth the visit. Also a great idea of what to do with that old car 🤣
Peter S — Google review
I would recommend this museum to anyone who is visiting Saltillo. Lots to see, even some reptiles and animals. They have a large display of minerals and crystals. There is also a cactus nursery where you can buy 🌵.
TinkerMom — Google review
Absolute fantastic museum. It's quite large and shines the spotlight on the history of the earth. The biggest theme is paleontology and dinosaurs. The Coahuilaceratops was found here in the region. There's also a reptilian section with Mexican snakes, some bats, turtles, coyotes and impressive mountain goats. tough the exponats aren't described in english, some of the staff speaks it.
Eruheran — Google review
Very good natural history museum, lots of things to see for kids and adults. Loved the paleontology and minerals section of the museum. We had fun as a family. The parking machine is not the most reliable and useful, it only takes small Mexican bills so you’re forced to go back and get change.

A beautiful city oasis park in the middle of traditional downtown Saltillo.
