Historical landmark
Nestled at the pinnacle of Safed, the Safed Citadel stands as a testament to the city's rich history and strategic significance. Perched about 1,000 meters above sea level, this historical landmark has roots tracing back to the Second Temple era, though much of what remains today reflects its Crusader, Mamluk, and Ottoman heritage.
If you visit Tzfat (Safed), visiting this monument and reading the history is a must. A very nice local told us how to access the domed area under the monument; part of the old Crusader fortress.
David A — Google review
The Citadel is located in a park with pretty vegetation and a beautiful view; however, it is filthy and there aren't many signs explaining archaeological sites.

Historic place , the artist’s place is beautiful

A beautiful place. Peaceful, grassy park with mountain views in all directions. There's a cool audio station that tells the story of the Battle of Safed in 1948. Couldn't find any public toilets.
Tal — Google review
The view here of Lake Kinneret and the mountains around is stunning. Early morning and late afternoon best. The story of Safed in the 1948 war is told here in part on the signage. Children can play in the adjacent park. Students of the Crisader- Muslim struggle will appreciate the ruins. If you dare, look for the underground cistern whose echoes and acoustics are legend.
Barnea S — Google review
Built upon ancient Jewish and Byzantine ruins, the Crusaders and then the Mamluks rebuilt it during the 12th and 13th centuries, until being totally destroyed by the 1837 earthquake. On the western slope beneath the ruins stands the former British police station, still pockmarked by bullet holes from the 1948 war.

The General Safed Exhibition is a vibrant hub for art lovers, showcasing the creative talents of local artists who draw inspiration from the enchanting colors and tranquility of Safed. Housed in a historic building dating back to 1901, this exhibition space reflects the city's rich cultural tapestry. Once a central mosque, remnants of its Arabic heritage can still be seen above the entrance.
Beautiful building, built 1902. Until May 1948 it was the city’s central mosque, and Arabic writing is still visible above the entrance. In fact the entire Artists’ Quarter used to be an Arab quarter, and of the three that once existed it’s the only one still standing.

Heritage museum
Nestled in the heart of history, the Memorial Museum of Hungarian Speaking Jewry has been a beacon of remembrance since its establishment in 1986. This museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich heritage and contributions of Jewish communities from Hungary, Transylvania, Slovakia, Carpathian-Russia, and Backa. With over a millennium of Jewish life in Hungary before the tragic events of 1944, visitors can explore an array of artifacts that paint a vivid picture of pre-war existence.
Amazing collection of pictures, documents, all kind of memories of Hungarian Jewish people. Call them before you come and ask for the guided tour! The building is inside the complex of Saraya, a bit difficult to find, you have to go inside the yard. Itt magyarul is beszélhetsz! :)

(Translated by Google) Very nice place. Entrance price NIS 20, with a guided tour NIS 35. We start with a 20-minute film about the life of the Jews in Hungary in the period before the Holocaust, and the return to Zion after the Holocaust. The museum is inside a one-story house, and contains three rooms, the first focuses on Judaica and Judaism objects, synagogues, and more. The second room deals with Jewish Zionism in Hungary, and Jewish youth movements in Hungary. The third focuses on the Holocaust period of Hungarian Jewry. For each exhibit, a listing in Hungarian, Hebrew, and English. The members of the museum, very nice people, welcoming, answer questions if necessary. An amazing and exciting experience.

The Red Mosque, located in Sad, has a rich Ottoman history and is now repurposed as an event hall. The Old Turkish Headquarters of Safed, which used to be a mosque, is currently serving as a community center. Visitors are drawn to the charming atmosphere of Old Safed for leisurely strolls and pleasant weather. While it may seem unusual that the Red Mosque is no longer red or functioning as a mosque but rather as a restaurant, its historical significance remains intriguing.

The British Police Station in Tzfat, Israel, holds historical significance as it was a site of intense battles during the War of Independence. The station's yard is enclosed by a damaged concrete wall and guarded by a pillbox guardhouse with visible bullet holes from past conflicts. This location also features an observation deck and a sculpture for photo opportunities. Additionally, visitors can find a memorial plaque honoring Haganah commander Yitzhak Hochman who lost his life in fierce battles at this spot.
The view from this specific site is immaculate.

Birya Fortress, located just outside the city of Safed, is a hidden gem that offers stunning panoramic views and a rich historical backdrop. Constructed on January 8, 1945, by the Palmach—an underground army during the British Mandate—the fortress served as a strategic base in Upper Galilee under the guise of civilian use. While it may not boast extensive facilities, visitors can enjoy serene forest walks and spot local wildlife like foxes and boars.

We were in a 2nd grade school. We went through 3 stations: Sofer Setam (Torah books, tefillin and mezuzah), then the study "in a room" was presented by an actor in an entertaining way and at the end we were shown a room where a family used to live, the tools they used and how they were conducted And you will work at home at the time. From there we continued walking to visit the ancient synagogue. An important and interesting experience. The kids were enthralled and the staff were amazing. recommended (Original)

Nestled on Alkabetz Street, Livnot U'Lehibanot is a vibrant nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching Jewish heritage and identity. Founded in 1980, this experiential program offers an array of activities for young adults aged 20-30, including local tours, nature hikes, seminars, and community service opportunities. Participants can immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Jewish history while exploring the stunning landscapes of Safed.
Livnot U'Lehibanot, meaning to build and to be built, is a nonprofit organization (founded in 1980) that seeks to strengthen and preserve Jewish Heritage - through people and places. They run programs in the summer and winter for people between 20-30yrs. On the programs, participants connect with their Jewish identity and heritage through classes, nature hikes and service work (eg. community service, excavation of a National Heritage site on Livnot U'Lehibanot property, living in the Old City of Tzfat). They also rebuild the Old City and have tackled a number of restoration and preservation projects for over 30 years. They currently offer tours of two projects: tunnels under Livnot U'Lehibanot and a 16th century community center currently being renovated. Livnot also serves as the official Visitors Center of Tzfat (Safed, Zefat). Livnot is the only year round program I know of that offers such an open and safe environment for nurturing self exploration from a Jewish perspective. In a time when the pressures of labels have never been stronger, we can sometimes be forced into a box. How do we break free? By going back to our roots, our stories, our traditions. To know where you're going, you need to know where you're coming from. Livnot means to build yourself and others. It's a great idea while in the visitors center to ask about their tours.
