1Setúbal

Mentioned on
7 lists
Setúbal, located on the Peninsula of Setubal, was once the center of Portugal's fishing industry in the early 20th century. While the sardine factories have since relocated, the district now thrives on tourism due to its picturesque coastline and hilly countryside. Many travelers, like Tom and his friends, choose Setúbal as a base for exploring new territories within easy reach of Lisbon after traveling around Portugal for several weeks.

Three of the park's beaches-Galapinhos, Portinho da Arrábida and Figueirinha-are popular among the inhabitants of Lisbon and Setúbal. Overlooking the three beaches is the Convent of Our Lady of Arrábida, a former monastery established in the 16th century, managed today by the Fundação Oriente.

Good place for walking with geat views over the coast and inland. Most of the paths we have taken so far are reasonable but some of the mapped routes online need some updating. there are wild boar around but we didn't " bump" into any. uber is cheap here so you can either do circular routes or get an user back if you start finish on a road as we did.
Chris W — Google review
Stunning views on the south side of Setúbal. This highway is one you want to swap drivers just so both people have a chance to look out into the ocean 😋. If you go in the evening it may be less busy.
Carina O — Google review
Fantastic beach. Bit of a steep walk to get to the ocean but was manageable with a 2yr old. Shame the restaurants at the front had no simple food options and both are 100% not suitable for children. Really let the place down. Had to leave and go elsewhere for lunch and dinner.

It’s was awesome when you reach top of the mountain. You forget your tiredness. I love hiking so it’s was fantastic for me…!

Delightful, relaxing park with different events going on (I noticed three). A concert, a talk and interview attended by a significant intellectual type crowd and a book show. I might have pics, if I do then I shall post them. Has lovely views of the river Duoro! A Porto gem!

Forte de São Filipe, also known as São Filipe Castle, is a historic fortress located in Setubal, Portugal. Built in the 16th century to defend against pirate raids, this magnificent castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the Sado Estuary. The fort features an irregular star-shaped plan with domed sentry posts and a tunnel accessible via the Portao de Armas.
Easy to get to by car. You can literally drive through the gates to park. A bit of a hike if walking but well worth it for great views. Chapel is tiles and beautiful too. And it’s FREE!

Nice fort to visit. Very beautiful place im Setubal It is possible to drive all the way up to this castle. Parking was available. Beautiful view of tha bay and the city. Plus for having a restaurant / cafe at the top. Nice to enjoy a glass of wine with this view . Good place for a date with your loved one.
Benjamin B — Google review
Scenic viewpoint to the city of Setubal, Troia and the Sado river. The parking and entry are free and there is a small cafe on top. Sadly, the trip was quite short since you can only visit the roofs of the castle. The interior is closed to the public.

Incredible views overlooking the water and the lands. Cool sitting area to stop and feel conquery inside after viewing the somber and elegant chapel.

Praia Tróia Mar is a stunning beach located on the Troia Peninsula, just a ferry ride away from Setubal. This paradisiacal destination offers calm and transparent waters, soft white sands, and an 18km long coastline to explore. The microclimate of the area allows for enjoyable visits throughout the year, with plenty of activities to indulge in. Praia Tróia Mar is described as picturesque and family-friendly, offering miles of beautiful beaches to explore.
Gorgeous beach, super soft and fine sand and during low tide a shallow sand bar appears that you can walk/swim to! The ferry over runs very often as well.
Maggie L — Google review
The water is freezing and the sand scorching. It could have better infrastructure with more hammocks and sunshades. It was 41 degrees today which is unbearable for most people. On the good side, it has a beautiful deck leading to the beach and the marine is beautiful.
Guilherme F — Google review
Have died and gone to heaven. Was introduced to Troia by a tour guide when we visited the National Park Arrabida and I knew straight away Troia was where I was going to stay for my last 3 days in Portugal. The Troia Peninsula is very similar to the Whitsundays in Australia. The sand is soft and white, and being a sand snob I would rate it 9/10 and especially so when low tide you can walk across the vast sand banks out to the Atlantic. No seaweed and the water is calm, although freezing/refreshing. Troia sand, views and waters beat Albufeira, Carvoeiro - the Algarve in general by a long shot! It is even better than Cascais but equivalent to natural beauty Adraga. Adraga has waves for those wave catchers. Renting a shared lounge is expensive, €25 for the entire day. Well worth travelling out here, off the beaten track! Lifeguards are at every beach around Troia and they even help kids in wheelchairs to get from the boardwalk to the beach! Great service Troia Rescue. How to get here / heaven: 1) Bolt/Uber from Lisbon to Setubal wharf (Atlantic ferry) = €25-35 and can take 45-60mins. Train is about €10. 2) Passenger Return ferry or speed boat is €9-10 leaving every hour during weekdays and almost every 30mins on weekends. They allow dogs on the ferry! 3) There is also the option of driving your vehicle over via Atlantic Ferry as well. 4) Troia itself is quite small so you can walk everywhere with well designated footpaths and boardwalks. The supermarket is pretty good, has almost everything including roast chicken. Portuguese people are friendly and it felt safe
JJ C — Google review
Crystal clear water, easy to reach by Ferry from Setubal Atlantic ferries station that has a trip every hour. And then walk for 10 mins. There’s a small bar that has Beer, water, Cola, …etc close to the beach. There are Chaseloungs and Umbrellas. No shower rooms, only WC
Aziz T — Google review
If you’re looking for an unspoiled, peaceful beach far from the typical tourist crowds, Tróia Beach is a true gem. Located on the Tróia Peninsula, directly across the bay from Setúbal, this spot offers stunning views and a rare sense of calm – even in the heart of summer. The crystal-clear waters shimmer with shades of turquoise, and the long, sandy shoreline is perfect for barefoot walks, sunbathing, or simply listening to the waves. It’s a free beach, meaning no umbrellas, no beach bars – just pure, untouched nature. Even during peak season, you’ll often find yourself alone or with just a few others around. It truly feels like a deserted paradise. 🚗 How to get there: The most scenic and convenient way to reach Tróia is by ferry from Setúbal: The car and passenger ferry departs regularly from the Setúbal ferry terminal (Terminal Fluvial) and takes about 25 minutes to reach Tróia. Alternatively, you can take the passenger-only catamaran, which is slightly faster and perfect if you’re not bringing a car. Once you arrive, the beach is easy to access on foot or by bike. Some areas are completely wild, so it's a good idea to bring water, food, and everything you need for a relaxing day by the sea.
Marco C — Google review
Incredible beach— can’t say enough good things about it! My family and I absolutely adore it. We’ve been staying in Setúbal for the past week, and we’ve been visiting this beach almost every day. The beach takes a bit of work to get to, but it’s absolutely worth it. The ferry from Setúbal to Tróia is €26.40 for 3 people. It’s a 12-15 minute ride, and it’s a lovely experience. The views are gorgeous, and I’d recommend taking the 7:30 pm ferry back to Setúbal to catch the sunset. Once you arrive on the peninsula, you walk about 20-25 minutes along a wooden boardwalk to reach the beach. It’s a picturesque walk, and you get to pass a outdoor cat colony. The cats are so sweet, and they appear to be cared for by the locals. The beach is magnificent. There was a warm breeze every day we were there, which kept the flies away. The sand is so soft and sparkly and not too hot. For context, we are visiting in late September. The water is cold, but you can definitely acclimate. It’s so blue, clear, and clean. At low tide, there are amazing sand bars, and you can walk pretty far out. I was also able to collect some gorgeous shells. Finally, there are ample trash cans and a clean bathroom. This beach as everything I want in a beach. I truly adore it.
Shannon M — Google review
Best bathing beach we have found. The water is beautiful and clear and not even too cold

Mercado do Livramento is a covered market in Setubal, offering a wide variety of goods including meat, fish, bread, and fruit. The 19th-century institution is known for its life-size statues of vendors and impressive tile murals depicting the area's agricultural heritage. This Art Deco market hall features neat marble rows accommodating numerous vendors selling fruits, vegetables, dried goods, baked items, dairy products, meat, and seafood.
I love this place! Each Saturday we travel there for food shopping from Lisbon. A lot variations of fish and seafood under good price, good meat choice, farmers vegetables, fruits, eggs as well. Many sellers accept cashless payments. Also you can find traditional Portuguese sweets and local deserts there. Even buy flowers. Near Pingo Doce, where you can buy more basic things. In case you shopping in supermarket - parking is free.

To a Brit, it’s always surprising how crumbling castles are left to roam in Portugal (whereas they’d all be roped off with health-and-safety signs back home). There’s not much to see of the interior, but it’s very pleasant to be able to wander round the intact walls and ruins, and you get some lovely views of Palmela from the top.

Praça de Bocage is a significant square in Setubal, featuring the statue of the poet, City Hall, and the Church of Sao Juliao. The church, originally built in the 13th century and reconstructed during King Manuel's reign, showcases remarkable Manueline-style portals. It has undergone various changes throughout history and now boasts three naves with a 17th-century tile panel depicting the life of Sao Juliao.
Lovely area, very beautiful and plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars, so something to suit whatever it is you're looking for. Or just a bench to sit and enjoy the view and watch life go by. Don't miss the cultural centre and the bar attached with very reasonable prices. And make sure you look up at the building when in the square to take in all they have to offer.

Very nice place to spend time and relax. There are trees near the fountain where you get good shadow during hot day. There are quite a few restaurants around this square. Also the small lanes that lead from this square has good amount of restaurants and gives a glimpse of history of this town.

Nice place to relax in Setúbal! Praça de Bocage is a good spot to sit and enjoy the city. The cafés are affordable and everything is nearby shops, restaurants and the port. Sometimes there are musicians playing but they often repeat the same songs and aren’t always the best. Still, it’s a pleasant place for a coffee and people watching.

What a beautiful plaza. We were pleasantly surprised because the Lonely Planet guide we had barely mentioned Setúbal. I'm surprised it didn't mention how beautiful the plaza is. I think it's one of the prettiest we've seen so far in Portugal. Plenty of cafes around to sip coffee and people-watch.

Out of the summer season it is pure joy and bliss, in the summer it is difficult to get a parking space, so either bike, or buses, but it get too crowded and parasols/ ombrelones are 20 euros per day, out of summer it is adorable 😍

Absolutely stunning beach with a wonderful view!! Warm water, beautiful sand, and small waves. Perfect place if you wanna swim all day. If you are coming from Lisboa, you can either take a train or bus to come to Setúbal, and from the center you can take another bus which will leave you literally in front of the beach, it’s very accessible in this way. One minus point is that the bus was packed with others, it can be an uncomfortable experience if they’re considerate people around themselves given that bus needs keep turning around the way.

Beautiful beach with some parking around and a bus stop. Has some drink stands and a cafe with bathrooms. Wide beach with a sandbar that was exposed at low tide. Water was cool but about the warmest I have felt yet in Portugal. Overall, beautiful!

If you like to spend a day on a beach packed like canned sardine, it’s perfect for you. The water is clear and calm so it’s nice for swimming, especially for families, but it’s too crowded. You can rent a pair of sun-chairs and an umbrella for 20€, but big families rent just a pair and put blankets in between. Hard to park, Uber from Lissabon is from 34€ and we got scammed (the driver marked he was there but he wasn’t).

one of the nicest beaches if you don’t wanna move too far from setúbal. there’s a bus you can take literally from anywhere in the city and it drops you footsteps away from the beach. amazing. that said: it’s so easy to get there that there’s always lots of people. but the sand is almost white, the water is really clear and with beautiful color and there’s no waves, almost like a really cold (atlantic ocean 🙃) pool. it’s worth going 🙌🏼

Casa da Baia de Setubal is a charming museum and tourist center located in a historic building on Avenida Luisa Todi. The traditional blue facade with white windows and decorative details, such as the entrance bank made from a small boat, adds to its allure. This two-floor space features an interior patio, exterior patio, auditorium, and meeting room. Visitors can gather information about the network of trails and adventure tourism in the region.
Very nicely Done and the best part is the staff here. They are very friendly and helpful. I recently moved from Lisboa to Setubal after 3 years and I am love with setubal already.

Lovely pit stop to the Blue House that is also tourist office. Was welcomed in and invited to visit the Dolphin Exhibition which was small but mighty and lots great information about Setubul Dolphins 🐬 and Ecological Systems.
Christine E — Google review
Nice tourist information centre with local wines shop, small museum about the local dolphins which we found very interesting, small cafe (most expensive and worst coffee and pastry I have had in Portugal yet, better to go to a local cafe) you can sit inside or outside, both are pretty. Small art exhibition too. Very classy tourist information I have ever been in. Nice to visit. Would not recommend the tourist train outside - audio didn’t work and it was a very bumpy ride! Also didn’t see great spots - better to just walk around yourself.
Mairi C — Google review
We had walked by this beautiful building many times and we finally stopped in. It is a collection of many things that were nice individually but they did not quite flow together. There is a dolphin museum, an art gallery, two fancy stores, and at least one restaurant. Everything was super nice, including the people that greeted us, but the Casa was simply not for us. Admission is free.

Very nice place to get advice, rest a while and visit the toilets if you need to. There is a shop selling local food stuff incl. wine, and t-shirts. There is also a small art exhibition for local artists.

It’s a beautiful and stylishly decorated place. Good wine choice from Setubal peninsular producers. To consume on-site is a bit pricey in Portuguese terms though. There is a lovely small museum, explaining on marine life of peninsular.

Albarquel is a large sandy beach in Setúbal, easily accessible from the city center. It's the first beach you'll encounter when entering Serra da Arrabida, featuring a vast expanse of golden sand and clear turquoise waters. While not considered one of the best beaches in the area, it offers a convenient location and beautiful views across the tranquil waters of the Sado estuary to the Troia Peninsula.
Very lovely and quite. There are a few peple and very decent. The mountain at the back makes it even more picturesque. Theere are shower which are clean and work well. You can also find a cute shop to get some drink.

Beautiful natural picturesque beach, cliffs and trees behind, lots of natural shady spots, calm sea, lots of fish, slightly warmer water due to it's proximity to Tróia, enclosing the water and keeping it a little warmer.. easy access, plenty of on road parking, numerous refreshments, areas with sun beds and sunshades for hire/rental, all in all a very nice spot..

We loved it. It was quiet, good people, the little bar was opened to get cold drinks, the bathroom was clean, baywatch present on the beach. I highly recommend it. The restaurant on the beach it was closed and didn't seem to open in the near future.

Praia de Albarquel is a beautiful beach located close to Setúbal, with calm waters and a relaxed atmosphere. It is not very large, but it offers a peaceful environment that makes it ideal for families and people who want to enjoy a quiet day by the sea. The sand is clean, the water is clear, and the view of the Arrábida mountains in the background makes it a very picturesque spot. There are also some restaurants and cafés nearby, which makes it convenient to spend the whole day at the beach without needing to move far. It is a great option for those looking for a balance between nature and comfort, with easy access from the city.

Beautiful beach with a stunning cenary of pure nature with background of the mountain. The water is cold but refreshing and clear. We visited in May and at that time it was quiet and peaceful, not too many people. In low tide is possible to walk all the way down passing the rocks. Although parking isn't easy but is well worth the visit. Highly recommended.

Jardim Engenheiro Luis da Fonseca, also known as Jardim da Beira Mar, is a beautiful and historic park in Setubal. One of the popular spots within the park is MXL Caffe, a glass-walled cafe with ambient music played by their resident DJ.
Jardim Engenheiro Luís da Fonseca, situated in Setúbal, Portugal, is a charming riverside park that offers visitors a serene escape with panoramic views of the Sado River and the distant Serra da Arrábida. The park is adorned with lush greenery, including a variety of trees and sculptures, creating a tranquil environment for relaxation and leisurely walks. One of the park’s notable features is the Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Cais, a sanctuary dedicated to the patroness of fishermen. This monument, inaugurated in 1953, stands as a testament to the gratitude of the local fishing community. Visitors can appreciate the historical and cultural significance of this site while enjoying the scenic surroundings. The Jardim Engenheiro Luís da Fonseca is also equipped with amenities such as a playground, making it suitable for families. Its proximity to the river enhances its appeal, offering a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle. Overall, this garden provides a delightful blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and recreational facilities, making it a worthwhile destination for both locals and tourists exploring the Setúbal region.

Nice place opposite the sea Unfortunately it was not well maintained with a lots of garbage 🗑 full
Said خ — Google review
The park is located right in front of the river, very close to the access to catamaran boats that can transport you to the other side, where you can visit Tróia. In one of its sides, you can also visit a seafood restaurant. Usually the place has lots of people fishing as well. Despite the good location and views, unfortunately the place is very degradated with the grass very dry and usually dirt (despite the presence of garbage bins). If it wasn't for that, it would be a nice place for picnics. In the park there's also an abandoned facility that used to be a nice café - now it's just a dirt and broken monolith of concrete and glass. You can also find a playground for kids in there, which unfortunately doesn't have any shadow to protect them from the Sun. Overall, a nice place to pass by.

Casa Santiago - O Rei Do Choco Frito is a relaxed eatery with a cozy ambiance and rustic wooden ceilings. It offers delicious fried cuttlefish, a renowned dish in Setubal. Situated on the docks by the ocean, this restaurant stands out among others specializing in Choco Frito (fried squid). Known as the King of Choco Frito, it consistently draws long queues of eager diners.
One of the best experience ever in my life ***** Great food, amazing food, very good atmosphere Speckless…. Recommend
Nuno D — Google review
Well worth the hype. This place is sooo busy but the staff still remains gracious. The cuttlefish is a really nice, chewy but meaty texture. Paired with the salad and fries was really delicious. I recommend this place.
Zehra K — Google review
"The King of Fried Cuttlefish"! That's literally the name of this restaurant and i believe they live up to it. While i was going out and about in Setúbal after a work appointment, i couldn't pass the chance of stopping by for some traditional fried cuttlefish, a dish who came to be one of the cities main attractions. Casa Santiago was the best rated restaurant within the area i was located and i went in without hesitation. Arrived early (around 12am) and i'm glad i did, because shortly after people started lining up outside hoping to get a table. I was promptly presented with the menu even though the choice was obvious and previously established, something i believe the employees are well aware of. The food was delicious. The cuttlefish was cooked to perfection, well seasoned, with the right chewy texture, the fries were reminiscent of those home fried fries my grandmother used to make and frankly it really hit the spot. Washed it up with some 7Up for a change as i always prefered "white sodas" to go with fish. The desserts are somewhat basic, so i went with some Ben&Jerry's which is utterly overpriced, to be frank. I was served by the same lady throughout my time there and she was very professional and attentive. Don't be surprised if they start to fasten the pace of coming to your table asking if you need anything when you're finishing your meal. Without being impolite, they know how to prompt you to finish as they desperatly need tables for the new costumers. It's all good. Certified "must stop" for everyone!

The best choco frito ever. First visit on 2017, second 2019 and now 2025...still the same taste...amazing😁
Grzegorz B — Google review
Quick service and an attentive waiter. The space is traditional, spacious, and well-lit. We had the Choco Frito and veal steak, both were excellent (fish slightly better). For dessert, we tried the Doce de Bolacha, a biscuit dessert crushed and blended with cream. It’s tasty. Prices are reasonable, offering great value for money.
Joao S — Google review
This restaurant is great. My friend brought me here. We arrived at 19:00 on Monday afternoon. Some people were already seated, but there were still some empty seats. Later, all seats were full. You should know that this is Monday, not Friday night, which shows that many people like this place. Next, let's talk about the food. The choco frito is delicious. I was so hungry that I kept eating it. The portion of his dishes is very large. For the two of us, we were very full after eating a large choco set meal. But I have to say that if you keep eating choco, you will get a little greasy in the end because it is fried. I suggest you order some other dishes to go with it. Although the decoration is not luxurious, I suggest sitting outside to eat so that you can see some scenery of the pier. It's a very good restaurant. I will recommend it to my friends, and the price is very affordable.
Gaia L — Google review
My favorite spot every time I visit Setúbal! Casa Santiago serves the best Choco Frito in town — crispy, flavorful, and always delicious. They don’t take reservations and it’s always busy, so arrive early. You might wait over an hour, especially on weekends, but it’s 100% worth it.

We were unable to find the direct track from the road down to the beach so instead walked along from the nearby beach at low tide. Had the beach to ourselves (april) which made it wonderful. Apparently this beach was voted the number one in Europe in 2017. It was nice but I have been on nicer beaches.

This is the most beautiful beach I’ve been to! The water is clear and fresh. The beach was not touristy at all! One of the most beautiful beaches I have been too. Water was clear and calm during early July afternoon. We spot some fish/es as well. It was not too crowded and very pretty. If you are more than 3 or 4 people, best to rent a car to go there. The public transport was not working when I went there. There are stairs to go down to the beach but you can also do a small "hike" trail. Love this place.

It’s a little hard to get there in the summer thanks to the convoluted road restrictions and lack of information about parking and access, but worth persevering to get here. It’s a really nice bay, with very gentle sea and shallow waves (so no body boarding or surfing). All generally very clean thanks to some hard-working litter pickers

We've really enjoyed our visit to the Casa Museu José Maria da Fonseca in Azeitão, Portugal. We booked a family visit and the staff was nice and gentle to engage the kids with questions during the tour and even provided some pencils and cryons so that they could do some colouring during the wine tasting. Regarding the visit itself, what a marvelous experience! We were guided through the gardens, the cellars, we could learn more about the history of the brand, the vision of the founder, the innovation (the first bottled wine in Portugal - Periquita) and much more. We definitely recommed it!

We had a lovely time in this charming and sometimes haunting winery. The old world charm and shadowy cellars were full of deep rich smells and ancient cobwebs and haunting Gregorian chants. The staff was friendly and the wines were amazing. We bought a few bottles.

We booked the €117 package for two people, which included lunch and a guided visit with wine tasting. To begin with, I sent an email asking for a few clarifications. I must say, the response I received was very promising. The lady who replied, Margarida Almeida, was extremely kind and helpful, leaving a great first impression. Upon arrival, we were directed to the restaurant where our table was already reserved. The meal was simply delicious—truly a highlight. After lunch, we joined the guided tour of the estate. We waited just a short while, and the guide arrived right on time. Her name was Matilde, and we were lucky to be the only ones on that tour. Since it was our 10th wedding anniversary on July 25th, having what felt like a private tour made the experience even more special. Matilde herself was the cherry on top. Her friendliness, deep knowledge of the place, attentiveness, and calm, thoughtful way of explaining everything turned the visit into something unexpectedly delightful. The tour ended with a wine tasting of four wines: one white, two reds, and one Moscatel. But since we were celebrating our 10-year anniversary, Matilde surprised us with a 10-year-old Moscatel—and what a difference compared to the younger one! And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, she brought us a 20-year-old Moscatel, which was absolutely mind-blowing. All in all, I would say that people like Margarida and Matilde truly make a difference. Thanks to them, our experience went beyond expectations and became something truly exceptional.

Had a tour and wine tasting here. The woman doing the tour was amazing and friendly (though I think more info in the wine rather than estate would be more interesting) The cellars were impressive. We took the Super paremium tasting : 2015 white pasmados (very interesting!), 2017 Periquita superior (meh, too oaky and smoky for me) and 20yrs moscatel blend (very good) -1 for rip-off juice price for kids: 8.5€ per small glass of simple bottled pear juice, 17€ total. Not cool…
Gytis R — Google review
The guided visit to the Casa Museu and the wineries of José Maria da Fonseca in Azeitão includes the story of a family that is motivated by perseverance, the will to create something new without forgetting the past. The guided tour takes about 45 minutes and begins from the beautiful house where the family of José Maria da Fonseca, the visionary once lived. The visit then continues through the vineyards to the wineries (Adega da Mata & Adega dos Teares Velhos) and Adega da Frasqueira (a private collection of Muscat wine – one of its own kind in the world!). At the end of the visit is the wine tasting, experiencing what is best produced there. The tasting includes two different types of wine, red and rose muscatel. It's different but nice experience.

Joao(also goes by John) was the best tour guide we could have asked for. If I could give 10 stars I absolutely would. He was just as enthusiastic about the history of the palace, even down to how the tiles were made and how they are made now, as he was about the wine. He knew a lot about the art sections as well. He answered our estimated 100 questions with ease and precision. I am new to wine and thought I’d maybe like 1 out of the 3 tastings. I ended up loving the next one more than I did the last. He did a fabulous job explaining what the differences were to someone who knows close to nothing about wine. My parents being wine enthusiast were impressed with his knowledge as well and engaged in many of topics. The tour offered way more than expected mostly due to Joao(I hope I’m spelling it correctly) so very much worth the price. Ended up leaving with multiple bottles.

Large winery with several varieties of reds, whites and moscatels. We didn’t have a reservation but arrived just in time for the English-version of the museum tour. Interesting tour of the barrel storage facility. The “museum” part after that consisted of several artists and some African art and I could have done without most of that. They were very generous with the wine tasting and even opened 3 extra bottles of wines for me afterwards to taste. Very nice staff. We had an amazing wine tasting experience with our friends, guided by Beatriz. She was absolutely fantastic and incredibly charismatic, making the entire experience even more enjoyable. Her knowledge and passion for the wines really shone through, adding a special touch to our time at Bacalhôa.

MUST SEE EVENT if your within a few hours away! Top shelf wines but the amazing part is the priceless art collection from 3 outstanding artists. Only $6.00 euros per person with private tour guide. Beautiful zen gardens with rich history and pride of ownership. Wish we could ship cases of wine back stateside. Our tour guides very knowledgeable and English speaking. Everyone spoke good English. Thank you for an outstanding tour.

Looked beautiful on arrival and very interesting grounds but we were not made aware until arrival that bookings were essential for both tours and even to taste! First time visiting a vineyard where you couldn't get a tasting therefore we sadly didn't buy any wine. Sadly we took a detour to visit here and left disappointed.

Strange place, decent wines. The private collection of art in the museum was a bit odd, but always nice to see the barrels and a nice collection of tiles. We had a small wine tasting, all good wines. You're doing the wine tasting in a shop, so atmosphere was a bit boring. We didn't do the palace tour which is a different place.

Parque Urbano de Albarquel is a must-visit attraction in Setubal, Portugal. Situated along the picturesque Sado River, this urban park offers stunning views of the water and the city. Spanning a vast area, it features well-maintained gardens, abundant green spaces, and diverse plant and animal life. Visitors can enjoy various amenities such as a basketball court, playground, outdoor calisthenics area, and beach football pitch.
This park reminds me so much of the Portland Maine waterfront. It was a very nostalgic visit for me.

Hidden gem! Walked on from Rockalot bar on Praia da Saúde because it was absolutely packed. Discovered this absolute gem in the park beyond. Nestled amongst the trees (excellent on a hot day) serving light lunches, snacks etc. Very relaxing, with views through the trees ti the water. Tried a tasty salad, washed down with icy cold beer which was perfect! Well worth a stroll!

It's a bit too crowded during weekends, but you can still find a place to be away from other people.

Beach and garden in one space. Ideal for relaxing reading a book while children play soccer or exercise. It has good shade places where you can spread a towel and sleep, low priced restaurants, bar and snack bar. Parking is supervised and toilets always have staff present. The beach has no lifeguards, usually strong sea currents. You can take your food and have a picnic.

The Church of the former Monastery of Jesus is a historic site in Setubal, Portugal, dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Built by Diogo de Boitaca, it is an early example of Portuguese Manueline style and features impressive cloisters and spiral columns made of Arrabida marble. Originally a convent for Poor Clare nuns, it represents significant moments in Portuguese architecture.
An outstanding collection of medieval and renaissance art in the heart of a busy port town. This is a very modern approach on museum curation, with plenty of multilingual texts to read and plenty of information to absorb. The highlight has to be the wonderful polyptych heavily influenced by the Flemish painters of the northern renaissance. Equally impressive is the church right next to the museum. A beautiful mix of styles and a set of columns that somehow find its way into Gaudi’s designs.
Nikos P — Google review

A fascinating church and upper choirs! For visiting the upper choirs you need to go into the museum; the church has an entrance from the side of the building and seems to be open at different times than the museum. I recommend to read a small booklet which is available on the upper choirs entrance to understand this gem better. I also found a mummy thanks to this booklet. Soon the museum will be fully open, right now the part of it is under renovation. But the museum and the church are worth visit anyway and now it is free of charge. Also nice people work there. Thank you for preserving this place!

The church has undergone significant changes over time and now boasts three naves adorned with a 17th-century tile panel depicting the life of Sao Juliao. Outdoor Activities
Praia do Creiro, also known as Portinho da Arrabida, is a popular destination offering a mix of beach relaxation and nearby archaeological exploration. The area features an ancient Roman industrial complex for salt fishing production. Access to the beach can be limited, with traffic restrictions in place from Praia da Figueirinha side. Visitors may need to take a bus or navigate limited parking options. The beach itself is described as secluded and otherworldly, surrounded by picturesque mountains.
Very beautiful beach, you'd think you were on the Mediterranean. The sea is much calmer here and therefore the beach is also ideal with small children. The access to the beach is quite easy, at the point where the road is closed you can simply drive down to the right to park (5€ a day), from this car park you then walk another 5 minutes to the beach (easy path also possible with prams). If the car park is overcrowded, you can also park in the street (free of charge), but then the walk is of course longer (but there were 2 TukTuks on site to take people down to the beach (3€ per person). There are also places to eat on the beach (snack bars) and sunbeds are also available. The right part of the beach is reserved for sunbeds and the left part is a normal beach without sunbeds (nicer part of the beach). At the end of the left-hand section of the beach there are larger stones/rocks between which you can walk and you come to other small sections of beach, definitely recommended.
Jérôme K — Google review

really nice beach. accessible by user and a bus. Plenty of things to do, cannoes, paddle boards, paddle boats with slides. great views and ample beach chairs if you want them. A few places to eat one of which we will try later. its a nice day out!
Chris W — Google review
Unfreaking believable. This beach is just so beautiful and ideal for families with small kids. Loads to do, and the drive is so scenic. If you want parking, get there no later than 8h30. otherwise, you park far from the beach. But amazing!
Ruben R — Google review
I had a truly peaceful day at Praia do Creiro and it quickly became one of my favorite coastal spots near Sesimbra. The beach is tucked between dramatic cliffs on the Alentejo coast, giving it a sense of secluded charm and natural beauty. The sand is golden and soft, and the water is clear and inviting, ideal for swimming or snorkeling. There are a few seasonal kiosks offering drinks and snacks which are reasonably priced and add to the relaxed atmosphere. The parking is free and the area is well maintained, though during peak summer weekends it can get a bit crowded. I enjoyed taking a long walk along the shore and dipping into the calm waters, then treating myself to a cold drink at one of the kiosks afterward. Praia do Creiro is affordable, accessible, and perfect for anyone looking to escape the city and enjoy a quiet, beautiful beach with a touch of natural elegance.
Antonio B — Google review
Really nice beach with good services. Note: just park on the side of the road and wave down one of the many drivers that will offer to drive you down there. €10 for the ride. Portinho beach is right next door and Portinho is a very cute little village with good restaurants.

I went yesterday and we found a lot of traffic to arrive there. However, although we arrived around 13h, we found parking spaces, you need to pay 5 euros. I am pregnant and my husband was allowed to bring me and my toddler totally down the road before parking. So i didn’t have to walk the hill, same for picking up. The place was calm and nice, really clean. We enjoyed a lot

Entrance is free! A fantastic place to be face-to-face with ancient artifacts. You can see and run your fingers in the grooves of stone menirs from the Neolithic times and marble tombstones from Roman era (one tombstone of a 9-year-old roman slave girl, translated to "May the Earth Be Light On You"). Lots of artifacts from the ancient history of the Setúbal area, going back to the Stone Age, Neolithic, Copper, Bronze, Iron...Roman, Moors, .etc. I found the roman fine dinner ware and glasses interesting, hard to imagine how they made such intricate things. The other half of the museum shows the fishing and cannery industrial of Setúbal. Very quiet museum with hardly anyone. About a two-hour visit.

Ferry service
Atlantic Ferries - Tróia (Cais Sul) is a popular transportation option for crossing the estuary from Setubal to Troia. The car ferry departs from Doca do Comercio in Setubal and arrives at the Cais Sul terminal on Troia, providing convenient access to Sol Troia and the resort town. Travelers can choose between pedestrian-only or car ferry options, with the latter offering a unique experience of sailing across the gulf.
Very efficient and on time. Bikes ride free with passenger on the ferry that leaves from next to the port (across from the gas station) but not allowed on the other catamaran ferries.
Betsy B — Google review
The trip is always amazing, and super convenient. The only downside is the price. If you plan to use it , the more you use higher the discount you have. So, in summary one way (car + driver + 1 passenger) was 26,50€ , but if you pay 2 way trip it will cost 48,80€ (less 4,20€ in proportion) There’s also (I believe) more discount if you plan to use +5 times. But the experience overall is awesome 👍
Francisco P — Google review
Excellent service, brand new quiet ferry with friendly staff. We loved our little trip and really enjoyed the views along the way. The ferry took about half an hour to get to Tróia.
Dominic S — Google review
An exciting trip to the gulf. There are two different versions, the pedestrian-only ferry and the car ferry, which does not arrive right at the tip of the peninsula where Troia is located, but 7 minutes from the hotels by car. Being able to walk on the bridge makes the experience even more unique. The landscape is breathtaking.
Elisa M — Google review
The ferry from Setubal to Troia and vice versa is a moment of calm during your trip. However, the price is quite high for this ferry, but it also saves you some 160 km of driving. You can pay with Via Verde.
Eddy C — Google review
Great views, very smooth, unlikely to cause sickness. Stairs accessible to the top floor, no lifts noted if you have a disability. 50 euros roughly with return. Several trips available, amazing seaside in Tróia.
Fábio D — Google review
Great views for a day out to Setubal. Ferries run regularly, so you don't have to hang around too long. At the Troia side, make sure you get out of your car while you're waiting and look at the jellyfish and large fish around the jetty.
James K — Google review
The journey is ok, short and convenient if you want to get from Setubal to Troia (and back). But there are only 2 ferries (one in each direction) with very small capacity that operate every 30 minutes. In high season it can be very exhausting and can happen to wait in line even for 1hr because of the crowd.

Dolphin Bay Golfinhos em Setúbal offers an unforgettable experience to meet a group of bottlenose dolphins in the unique Sado Estuary, one of only three in Portugal and Europe. Joining a boat tour from the harbor allows visitors to witness these magnificent creatures up close. The knowledgeable crew provides insights about the individual dolphins and their habitat while ensuring a respectful distance is maintained.
Amazing experience! The crew were marine biologists and told us a lot about the bottlenose dolphins we saw. We were observing the dolphins for about half an hour, and then the crew took us on a tour along the shoreline with short explanations about the different sights. We especially enjoyed the approach they have to the dolphins: they really care about their comfort and make sure the trip is as sustainable as possible to protect the marine environment. Another plus: the catamaran is clean and modern, and they have cheaply priced drinks and snacks on board.

Didn't see any dolphins as we were at the start of the season. The boat ride was still amazing, and the friendliness and knowledge of the staff on board is great. We were given a voucher to use next time, so I'm really looking forward to that!
