The Church of St Mary, Lowe House is a significant landmark in the town center, designed by WD Caroe and built between 1916 and 1926. The church has undergone extensive repairs supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund's Grants for Places of Worship scheme. It was constructed to serve St Helens' growing Catholic population in the early 20th century.
It is truly an amazing church. The Lourdes groups held their reunion Mass here. I was very impressed that we all fitted and the occasion felt as though we had only been home for a week and not six. For those who are not religious but are interested in architecture and buildings, I recommend you take a look at this church.

Living next to this church is like constant countdown. Bells every 15 minutes since early morning to 10pm. Who need those? What is the purpose? My email with enquiry to priest been ignored (I'm not surprised).

My nan would go every week her whole life. do the flowers and things until alziemers meant she had to go to a care home in rainhill. When she passed this church refused to do her funeral as she was no longer a local resident. How very Christian of them..

Was here for a funeral so not the best of occasions. However a very impressive church architecturally inside. Worth a look if only for that alone

I phoned to enquire about opening times, was told 11.45am, I travelled 10 miles from Runcorn to St Helens to do some research and find it locked up and not a living soul in site.

St Helens Parish Church, also known as a Chapel of Ease, was documented in 1558 and can be found on Chapel Lane, now called Church Street. This historical place was originally part of Windle township. Recent construction near the intersection of Bridge Street and Church Street has uncovered two ancient wells and grain pounders. The church is open to visitors throughout the week, providing a welcoming environment for worship. Its rich history makes it worth exploring for anyone interested in this significant Anglican establishment.
I love these pictures as some of them are from fifty three years ago when I served in the South Arabian Campaign with the 1st Battalion Lancashire Regiment ( PWV ) I was 19years old at the time there are also pictures of Armed Forces Day in Wigan on 29/6/19

I had a little walk today in St Helens… probably seen this building before, but never stopped to see its function. A beautiful church inside, and looks like a community hub, too. Lovely, welcoming staff, little buffet, children’s area and some kind of ‘mini library’ on site! It was great to get access, and definitely visit again, soon. If you’re in town, pop in and recharge your mind in this peaceful church

The Holy Cross and Saint Helen Catholic Church in St. Helens has recently relocated to its original location, drawing in members who appreciate the traditional Catholic faith. The church may not be as grand on the outside as others, but its interior is stunning, with a sanctuary that truly embodies the meeting of Earth and Heaven. Regular events such as the Thursday evening Holy Hour and Faith Discussion Group provide opportunities for reflection, prayer, and engaging discussions led by Father Jonathan.
This is most spectacular church in St.Helens! It’s outward appearance may not be as grand as Lowe House but the interior is stunning. Like any Catholic Church should be, the sanctuary (altar) truly is a space where Earth and Heaven meet. Thankfully, those who use Vatican II (incorrectly I may add) as an excuse to reorder Catholic Churches and remove beautiful altars, haven’t got their hands on this church! If I were the Parish Priest, I would remove the forward facing altar altogether, and use the majestic and heavenly high altar, bringing the whole congregation closer to the Real Presence of Jesus in the tabernacle. Above the high altar, where it’s painted blue (around the rose window), many years ago, there used to be beautiful murals of the heavenly realm. I again would urge the Parish Priest to investigate the possibility of reinstating these.

The most beautiful Altar Reredos it is possible to see. Thank God it is still protected and giving glory to God and inspiration to us all. A wonderful church I remember from the 1970s. A sacred place of exquisite beauty. One of the most delightful Catholic churches in the whole of England.

I have been attending the Thursday evening Holy Hour and the Faith Discussion Group for the past year. The Holy Hour is the perfect opportunity for reflection and prayer with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. The discussion group that follows is a friendly group led by Father Jonathan, usually delving into scripture. Father’s enthusiasm is infectious! I’d recommend anyone to come along.

Cremation service
St Helens Cemetery & Crematorium is a beautifully maintained resting place that has earned Green Flag accreditation, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Friends of St Helens Cemetery. Nestled on the outskirts of St Helens, it offers easy access from nearby areas like Kirkby and Liverpool via East Lancs. Visitors often appreciate its immaculate grounds, featuring well-manicured lawns and vibrant flowerbeds that create a serene atmosphere for reflection.
Clean & tidy with very well maintained grounds through out. My mothers service went well there. I often take a drive up and walk the grounds reflecting on my mothers passing. My only gripe is there is to many people using the grounds to walk dogs that are peeing over graves! Not only does this disturb actual visitors but it's hard to find a quite place there to grieve without being disturbed by dogs and there owners.
Andy L — Google review
I would like to express my thanks to the staff that helped me today. 24th June, 2025. I have been researching my family history and came to the cemetery today to look for a family grave that was over a hundred years old. I went into the office and was greeted by Hazel. She couldn’t have been more helpful or friendly. She gave me a map of the cemetery and told me the precise location of the grave. She also gave me a print out of the grave owner (my great grandmother) and the names of other people interred. This in itself has widened my interest with my research, making me more determined to find out as much as I can about my relatives. It took me a long time to find the whereabouts of the grave. I knew it had sunken over the years, and I was about to leave with the knowledge I had gained, yet not seen the exact plot of the grave. By chance, I met Billy, one of the ground keepers. I told him that I was looking for a particular grave and he said he would help me to find it. I walked back to the section and then Billy arrived with two of his colleagues, Darren and Brian. Not only did they find the grave, but brought the headstone out of the sunken ground, and I was able to read the inscription. I cannot begin to tell you how this made me feel. This act of kindness by your groundkeepers has been one of the nicest things to happen to me and I can’t thank them enough. I was content to just be in the place were my relatives are laid to rest, and your staff went above and beyond to help me in my quest. Please pass on my warmest gratitude and to keep up the good work. You employ some amazing staff.

STEVE — Google review
Peaceful and quiet first thing in a morning, signs are up to keep your dog on a lead but some people seem unable to read. Well maintained by the council and plenty of bins dotted around.
Dave M — Google review
the first thing I liked is it's location which is on the edge of St Helens and very accessible from Kirkby/Liverpool via the East Lancs. Grounds are immaculate with lovely cut lawns and manicured flowerbeds. The building artchitecural wise is really nice with ample parking, inside it was extremely clean and bright with large stained glass windows. With regards to the service it was extremely short - we were in and out in about 12mins but that suited us as we wanted no fuss but they did cut the first two minutes of the song that the coffin entered the building which wasn't a good start however that was the only fault I could find. I'd highly recommend using this crem, they were attentive and kind.

Nestled on Monastery Road in Sutton, St. Anne & Blessed Dominic R C Church stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit. Originally established in 1853, the church replaced an earlier Gothic-style structure that succumbed to mining subsidence. Despite its modest exterior, visitors are often surprised by the spaciousness within, creating a welcoming atmosphere for worship and reflection. The church is not just a place of prayer; it’s alive with history and warmth.
The Church itself is an amazing place. It feels much bigger inside than it appears from outside. It's history is there for all to see. They are great and extremely welcoming. Celebrated Mass with the school children, who were very well mannered and followed the celebration attentively.

Absolutely loved the priest. Very nice and approachable. He made several jokes during the ceremony and explained really well the ritual. The congregation is really fortunate to have such an amazing spiritual guide.

St Thomas Church, a stunning place of worship, recently hosted a moving service to honor someone's beloved Grandmother. Despite the strict pandemic guidelines in place, Harry Wood organized a beautiful and heartfelt event. The church itself is an exquisite example of Anglo Catholic architecture, while its priest exudes tranquility and serenity. The scent of incense permeates the air within these hallowed walls, creating an atmosphere that truly resonates with worshippers.

Went to visit a loved one in the church yard took me a while to make my way thru the up keep of this church yard is a disgrace and it's about time this was kept in order I don't want to hear oh it's the pandemic oh it's winter it's been like this for years
Donna A — Google review
Went today to the church yard directly behind the church as I have 4 generations of family buried there. The place is an absolute disgrace where I’d the respect for the people who are laid to rest there. Yet walking past the house of the vicar or priest it’s all well kept an neatly cut. So much for being a community and looking after each other

What a most marvellous and special christening we had today for our grandchildren Austin and Penny. Loved every second thankyou
Ianthemonk — Google review
Pretty little church that is not used enough. I'm in no way religious but, I hate to see beautiful old buildings under used. Having said that there are a few local groups that do use it. And one is the toddler group that I took my Granddaughter to, it was lovely. They kept the children entertained and they provided a little picnic for them. And the parents/grandparents were fed and watered as well with tea/coffee and pastries. All for free! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Dave M — Google review
Looks bigger on the outside than it is inside. Sort of reverse TARDIS. But it's got lots of character (Like many churches) and is in a good state of repair (Unlike many churches). They have a reputation of having over long services / baptisms / confirmations etc but when I attended it wasn't too long or drawn out - just seemed about average in my experience.

Be careful walking past the church and the town hall. The dependents gather here, and can hassle strangers. It's often fenced off to deter them. The cafe next door is a safer option if you want to observe the shinnanihans.
