Bangor University, established in 1884, has grown from a small institution with only 58 students to a multidisciplinary university with over 12,000 students and 2,000 staff members. It is one of the founding institutions of the University of Wales and is located in the historic city of Bangor, known for its roots dating back to the 6th century AD.
Am continuing my distance learning course at with a Bangor tutor via distance learning after I had passed my Mynediad exam. Mrs. Carole Boyce prepared the entire class incredibly well to sit for the exam and a lot of us continued onto Sylfaen with her. Photos are from my 2024 trip to Bangor where I sat for my exam. Incredibly beautiful campus and land with a lot of cool cafes, across the Menai Bridge where I had walked over onto Môn.

I went to university here to study Business and Computer Information Systems. Bangor Uni is a great place with great lecturers and lots of support from everybody to integrate into the community, to take part in activities and there is always something excited going on. The Student Union is doing an amazing job with the societies and clubs that are free to join, everybody is friendly and inclusive and apart from the usual Welsh weather, Bangor is gorgeous. I couldn't be happier and more satisfied for having chosen Bangor as my university and the place to learn and grow!

Beautiful part of wales with rolling mountains, forests and beautiful beaches. The University architecture is incredible, its a great place for learning with all the resources a student needs. The University really looks after its pupils.

Sights & Landmarks
Historical landmark
Menai Suspension Bridge, built by Thomas Telford in 1826, is a historic road crossing with a pedestrian walkway that offers stunning views of the Menai Strait. Before the construction of the Expressway, it was the only route to access Anglesey by road. The bridge's impressive architecture and its significance as the first major suspension bridge of its kind make it a must-see attraction.
Beautiful views. Make sure you walk over the pedestrian path to see up the Menai Straits towards Beaumaris and down towards Plas Newydd. Look out for Church Island and the Druid stones. You can spot Heron, Swans and Seals if you're lucky.
Bronwen B — Google review
Went for a walk and saw this beautiful looking bridge with spectacular views especially on a day with good weather. Will definitely be coming back here when I visit North Wales again. If you’re passing by, highly recommend stopping by and appreciating the views.
Ahnaful A — Google review
A beautiful bridge connecting Anglesey with the Wales mainland. Lots of walks around it base alongside the Menai Straits on both sides. Treat yourself to a rib ride under it!
Lois C — Google review
The views from this bridge are gorgeous and it's a brilliant bridge all on its own. Pity about the roadworks (July 2025) as we queued for around 20 minutes. The walk across would be even better. Worth a detour if you are in the area.
Elaine W — Google review
My favourite bridge, built bt Thomas Telford. I love the bottle green colour of the sea here and the whirlpools when the tide is high and the sun is out. Looks such a dangerous place to have built such a structure, truly incredible.
Iroam A — Google review
A really great experience and impressive historical bridge.well worth a visit if you are travelling nearby. Do spend some time viewing it and a path leads to the bottom where you get some great views and get to appreciate the engineering of this bridge.

Bridge
Historical landmark
Britannia Bridge, originally built in the 1800s as a railway bridge, was reconstructed in the 1970s to include a road. The bridge offers picturesque views of the Menai Straits and is just a short drive away from attractions like Pili Palas Nature World and Plas Newydd House and Gardens in Bangor. Visitors can experience the scale of this fascinating structure from a viewpoint that also provides beautiful views across the Menai Straits.
Lovely bridge. Dual purpose with a dual carriageway above and a railway line below. There are great walks either side of the Menai straits which offer great views of the bridge and are lovely in their own right. If you walk to the bridge from Treborth gardens you can get down to a jetty with perfect views back up at the bridge.
Iain L — Google review
I think this is the ugliest bridge I have ever seen. It looks like a bridge from the Soviet Union. Hurts my eyes. It gets 1 star because it connects 2 banks and is therefore somewhat useful. From a distance it is slightly less ugly.
Frans W — Google review
The Welsh government are hell bent on being green and yet this disgraceful bridge has no pedestrian access, despite being one of only two bridges. To detour on foot via the other bridge and back to the other side is three miles - an hour and a half walk, assuming you are even able and it isn't closed. If the Menai Bridge is closed for maintenance, pedestrians simply can't cross the strait full stop. The road here is 50mph, single carriageway and has a pavement, yet if you do try and cross it officials turn you back and tell you to order a taxi from one side to the other. Very green. And yet other 70mph sections of the A55 with narrow pavements you are fine to walk on, and they are far more dangerous. There's a Network Rail track runs by the railway that could be turned into a cycleway for little cost, but the Welsh government are too lazy. This is a complete and utter disgrace and it's about time lazy councilors and governments improved the pedestrian situation on this bridge.
Greg S — Google review
Nice looking bridge. Bit inconvenient since 3 lanes merges into one.
Marcus H — Google review
Great experience to cross such an historical bridge...well worth a visit if you close by.
Azhar A — Google review
The Britannia Bridge is a fascinating structure, and this viewpoint allows you to experience its scale thoroughly. It also provides nice views across the Menai Straits in both directions. The site exhibits a few historical artefacts, such as one of the tubular girders. When we went, there was almost no-one else around; this may be because cars are now banned from the area. The main viewpoint is on a stone wharf under the bridge - this is accessed by a sloping path, which was very slippery. There is another viewpoint on the north side of the Straits, accessed from the layby and down to the shore. Overall, a very impressive, but perhaps underappreciated, viewpoint.
Oliver M — Google review
Can get best photos from lay-by rather than rely on Google maps directions

As you cross the bridge turn right and there's a pull in, park there and follow the path for a lovely short walk to right under the bridge

Strait
Menai Strait is a captivating channel renowned for its strong tidal currents and whirlpools, featuring two impressive bridges and numerous islands. The area offers an array of coastal dining experiences, showcasing the freshest catches like Anglesey Sea Bass and locally sourced mussels and oysters. In the countryside, charming rural eateries serve up hearty dishes with Welsh Black Beef and Snowdonia's lamb paired with locally grown vegetables. This region has established a distinct culinary identity celebrated by dedicated chefs.
Well worth a boat trip from the car park in Caernarfon. £10 for 45min tour is a bargain. The Menai Straits is a beautiful location and the tour was very informative.

The Belgian Promenade offers a delightful walking experience that begins in a serene forest along the Menai Straits, nestled between the iconic Menai Suspension Bridge and Tysilio Island. This area is not only recognized as a National Landscape but also serves as a Marine Conservation Area, showcasing nature's splendor with sightings of seals in the water and red squirrels among the trees.
Stunning walks to view both bridges spanning the Menai Straits between Anglesey and the main land. Areas to sit down and watch the ever changing views, spring tides are interesting when the walk way floods over.
Gerry — Google review
Lovely spot. You have great views of the Menai suspension bridge and the Britannia bridge as well as church island. You can also nip up to waitrose through the forest from here. It's a quick walk into Menai Bridge as well.
Iain L — Google review
My absolute favourite place to walk to. It's only about a 25-minute walk from the University. You get amazing views of 2 different bridges and it's full of wildlife. It's a very calm and peaceful area with very little footfall and hardly any traffic noise. Plenty of benches. If you're into skimming, there's a smaller stream which is perfect for it. The only downfall is it's not a very long walk - about 15 minutes in total if you walk along the graveyard island too.
Daniel S — Google review
Drove under the bridge from the east side and managed to park literally under the bridge... there's room for about three cars ...walked up road onto path and down to the promenade. Beautiful walk along flat path to church island and walk around graveyard which was a lovely way to spend 2hours.
G — Google review
A lovely walk from llanfairpwllgwyngyll train station to the Belgian Promande. Once on the promenade you can go over to the island and the church is always open to visitors also a you can climb upto the monument with views of the Menai. You need to check the tide times if walking along the coastal path. You can get to it along the holyhead road towards bangor.

Historical landmark
Menai Heritage - The Menai Bridges Museum is located within the Thomas Telford Centre in Mona Road, Menai Bridge. It showcases a bridge exhibition and serves as an active community center. The museum is situated on one of the main bridges connecting Bangor of Wales mainland and the Isle of Anglesey. Although closed to traffic for urgent structural maintenance, pedestrians and cyclists can still access it to enjoy the scenic views of Anglesey, Menai Strait, and Bangor.
It is one of the main bridges connecting Bangor of Wales mainland and the Isle of Anglesey. It was closed to traffic during the visit owing to urgent and very important structural maintenance. However, pedestrians and bicycles can still pass the bridge. Visitors can enjoy viewing the scenery safely and quietly. Apart from its historical and traffic importance, it is really a great place for viewing Anglesey, Menai Strait and Bangor at the same time. It is a place that must travel for every visitor of the Isle of Anglesey.
Fat C — Google review
This is quite a tiny museum to educate people about the history of the two bridges across the Menai. It's run by volunteers, who are keen and knowledgeable. We spent an hour in there reading the board ds and looking at the exhibits. Well worth it if you have an hour to spare.
Andrew B — Google review
This is a lovely venue that gets used for things other than just the museum. For example there is a yoga and well-being class on Monday mornings by northern light yoga (Naomi Dalton takes it). It has a kitchen area as well. The people that run the venue are really nice and very professional and organised as well. You can park in Waitrose car park for free for a couple of hours which is handy :-) Ps the museum is very interesting as well.
Iain L — Google review
Really interesting place, lots of exhibits, and the main room also hosts some evening lectures.
Sarah A — Google review
Brilliant heritage museum, spent nearly 2 hours here packed with lots of interesting things and great displays, well set up with lots of photos, drawings, artefacts, and original parts rescued from the water after a refurbishment during the last century. Also a great short film explaining how both bridges came about and where built. The volunteers, Jenny & and Janet, were very welcoming and very knowledgeable and nothing too much trouble, they where great guides on where to start with the displays. Also gave good ideas, with where to go on a trail around Menai Bridge. Much appreciated as we got see the bridge close up , church on the island and parts of the town we would have missed. Lovely ladies, thankyou. We parked 2 minutes up the road , tho there are a few spaces in front of the Heritage centre with 2 hours free parking. All for £5 a head, what a bargain, great place to visit.
Joanna R — Google review
Great little museum with friendly knowledgable staff. Interesting information on the Menai bridges, Thomas Telford and local history. The film describing the bridge construction is well worth viewing.

Observation deck
The Clifton Suspension Bridge, a stunning creation by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, elegantly stretches across a dramatic urban river gorge. This iconic structure not only showcases remarkable industrial design but also embodies the rich history of Bristol's engineering feats. My journey to understand this landmark began in 2010 when I explored the area with my camera in hand, eager to capture its essence.
The views are breath taking. This is such a beautiful bridge and part of Bristol’s culture. The structure of this bridge is amazing. The surrounding areas are beautiful. The Observatory is nearby. This is definitely worth a visit if you are in Bristol.
Kayleigh P — Google review
Fab views, easy to walk across and you can see birds of prey diving and hunting from the end. There is a free museum that tells you all about Brunel and the bridge - we didn’t go but it looked interesting. £1 for cars to cross but free for foot passengers.
Kerry F — Google review
A must do when visiting the Clifton Suspension Bridge is visiting it by foot. There is a great walk from the river going up (you have to cross a busy road, but it is worth it as you see the bridge from different heights and angles. There is a digital tour with lots of information, download recommended!
MUSEUM H — Google review
Before sharing my review, I want to acknowledge that the Clifton Suspension Bridge, despite its beauty, has sadly been the site of tragic losses. That’s why it’s so important to remember that help is always available. The Samaritans can be reached 24/7 at 116 123, with compassionate people ready to listen and support you through any situation. Remember, you matter, and the world is brighter with your smile in it. The Clifton Suspension Bridge is truly a sight to behold. Its beauty is breathtaking, especially when viewed from afar with the Avon Gorge beneath it. The bridge is steeped in history, having been designed by the famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and completed in 1864. Walking across the bridge is free, and it gives you an incredible perspective of the surrounding area. Driving over it costs £1.50 for cars, which feels fair considering its importance. Visiting at night is especially beautiful with the lights turned on, creating a magical atmosphere. The bridge is not just a stunning piece of architecture, but also a vital link for transportation in the area and a symbol of Bristol itself.
Ayyub C — Google review
We walked 40 minutes on a rainy day to see the Clifton Bridge and it was well worth it. The views were spectacular and the bridge itself a feat of engineering, fascinating.
Claire Ģ — Google review
Love our visit to the bridge! However, the drive up to the bridge was a tricky one for me. Narrow two way roads with cars parked either side, with lots of sharp u-bends. Once at the destination we were lucky enough to find parking on the street (i felt we were lucky with that space). Parking cost almost £7 via the RingGo app- I’d advise to download this beforehand as we had poor phone signal which made it difficult. Walk to the bridge is short and once there incredibly impressive. The walk across is only open on once side at the moment due to maintenance on the other side- regardless, the view is a great one! Walked back over to then take the short walk up to the observatory tower for a much better view of the bridge (in my opinion). The observatory has a cafe and a cave for another different view of the bridge. Apart from the last 10 min drive up to the bridge and paying for parking, it’s brilliant. Exactly what it says on the tin and a beautiful scenic walk and view. Highly recommend!
Victoria T — Google review
Passed through the bridge on the way to Wales. It's a nice piece of history and in good weather offers a nice view along with being able to marvel at the engineering. The area is nice and there are coffee shops close by. If you drive over you have to pay £1
Mark C — Google review
A Timeless Icon of Engineering and Beauty – Clifton Suspension Bridge Clifton Suspension Bridge is more than just a way to cross the Avon Gorge—it’s a breathtaking symbol of Bristol’s heritage and ingenuity. Designed by the great Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the bridge seamlessly blends 19th-century engineering brilliance with stunning natural surroundings. From the moment you approach, the views are simply unforgettable. Whether you’re walking across or gazing from the Clifton Observatory, the panoramic sights of the gorge, River Avon, and surrounding countryside are spectacular at any time of day. Sunset, in particular, casts a golden hue that transforms the entire scene into something magical. The bridge itself is an architectural marvel. Elegant and enduring, it continues to function as a vital crossing while drawing visitors from around the world. There’s also a small Visitor Centre nearby, offering insight into its rich history and the challenges faced during construction. Whether you’re a tourist, photographer, history enthusiast, or just someone looking for a quiet spot to reflect, Clifton Suspension Bridge delivers. It’s not just a bridge—it’s an experience.
