Historical landmark
The Heights of Abraham is a hilltop park in the UK, accessible by an Alpine cable car system that offers visitors an exciting aerial ride over the Derwent Valley. Once a lead-mining site, it has been transformed into a visitor center with wooded areas for leisurely strolls and stunning views.
This was an absolute brilliant day out. Started off riding the cable cars up to the top, beautiful scenery to look out. It all felt quite safe! The actual place at the top had plenty of things to see and do! From Wombles to the Caves it was great fun! We had a brilliant explorer for the caves- The Other Steve - he was so full of knowledge and enjoyed sharing it. Kept me interested all the way through and the light show at the end was a great surprise! Great day out and we all enjoyed it!

Had a fantastic day here. The staff were fantastic. The in character staff were amazing and so friendly and knowledgeable. Special shout goes to Mel who showed us round one of the caves. She was fantastic and a real credit to you. So funny and knowledgable. There’s lots to do up there. The cable car ride is great. 2 caves to tour and plenty of fun for the kids on the play grounds. The cafe was brilliant. Had a lovely panini in there and some lovely cake. We came on a weekday outside of the school holidays and didn’t have to wait for anything. Lots of walking to be done and some is rather steep.
Craig B — Google review
We had an absolutely wonderful experience here today. It was our first time visiting and had no idea what to expect, but what a day we had. I’ve come to write a review because I want to give recognition to Lorin, the lovely guy that did our Cavern tour. He was so helpful, approachable, and even took the time out to stay back and show us some fossils in the final cavern, because my autistic son’s special interest is dinosaurs. He was brilliant with both of my children and made the tour really quite special. Give this man a raise immediately HoA! 🥲🤣

Great couple of hours at least spent with great views . The Cave experience is informative and interesting. The cafe is very good with great selection at reasonable prices. parking is in the station carpark payable . Blue badge holders can pay for time and get an hour ontop free. It is a short walk to the cable car ticket office. Just be aware that the last 150yard to Ticket office is steep.

EXCELLENT! This is an interesting way to spend the day on your holiday! Excellent, very well manned cable carts to take you to the hill/mountain? At the top, you’re instantly met with more helpful staff full of information on where to go and what you can do. There’s two caves, both equally interesting totally made by the excellent curation and delivery or stories by the guides (Jordan and Bessie were first class). There’s two excellent play areas suitable for most ages (above toddler I think). Fabulous cafe, where we had excellent service by Sue plus the views were spectacular! I was super impressed they had a variety of gluten free vegan cakes (that were not the usual boring brownies!). They also had two bars ( one is the oldest licensed bar in Matlock). There’s also a Wombles building, a couple of lovely gift shops, lots of information, a pizza van and more. The views are incredible. Overall, this is great value for money and something the children will not forget.
Hayley B — Google review
Excellent place for the kids day out. Lots things to do and see. Nice cafe and play ground. Stunning views during the cable car and from the top. Most amazing mining tunnels and the guide was excellent
Manisankar K — Google review
Heights of Abraham is a fantastic family destination—perfect for both toddlers and older kids, with plenty of land to explore, play areas, and exhibits to keep everyone entertained. We especially enjoyed the Wombles exhibition—it was fun and whimsical, and offered something a bit different. The views from the hilltop are absolutely lovely, trampling over the Derwent Valley and surrounding countryside, making the cable car ride all the more magical. The food was okay, but nothing to write home about—not quite matching the beauty of the surroundings. I was also disappointed that they didn’t have a chai latte on the drinks menu, and vegan soft serve ice cream wasn’t available—both would have been great choices to round off a lovely day. Admission is on the steep side: adult tickets cost about £25 online or £28.50 at the gate . It felt quite expensive, especially for a shorter visit, but with a longer stay it might be more justifiable. Overall, it’s a beautiful and memorable place with a lot to offer families. With improvements to the food and drink options, it would be near-perfect!
Chloe B — Google review
Wonderful day out, perfect for dogs also, they are allowed everywhere but caverns and the Vista restaurant. Food a little pricey but picnic tables are everywhere for a packed lunch. The cable car stops half way up for stunning view pictures.

Event venue
The Fishpond in Matlock Bath is a lively and family-friendly pub that offers entertainment, hearty food, and traditional beers. It is located in the unique village of Matlock Bath and has a dynamic history, having served various purposes in the past. The venue also functions as a wedding location and has been praised for its friendly atmosphere, cleanliness, and great food.
Proper lovely food, with a welcoming staff and friendly atmosphere. It’s worth stepping in for a quick bite or a full meal. On the pricier side but it’s definitely worth it with the huge portion size. Donburi was quite unique and was a surprise to the taste buds.
Priyanjana K — Google review
Fairly big pub known for its food although i only popped in for a beer. Serves ale but I was on the lager as it was a sunny day. It’s pleasant sat out front ( people watching and vibe) and the back (has an actual fishpond). Has.occasional live music. recommended! 🍻 🐠
G T — Google review
Nice pub with a cosy atmosphere. Staff were friendly and helpful on allergies. I got the marinara pizza, which is technically incorrectly named because marinara doesn't have cheese on, but honestly that doesn't matter because it was fantastic. Perfectly cooked, I took a picture underneath a slice just to show it off. It had so much flavour: the parmesan, the tomato, and oregano and garlic. I couldn't stop eating it. I had a side salad with it too which worked well with it. I also had a rum and coke which was a really good price. I'd like more rum options; that's the only negative I have. If I'm in Matlock Bath again I'll definitely come back

I went on the recommendation of my son who said he had the best loaded fries here. It was a sunny Sunday so I knew it would be busy, so we booked a table online. Despite the place being absolutely rammed, we were served quickly and the staff were all friendly. The food was really good. Actually better than I was expecting. The loaded fries were indeed great and I had the chilli beef which was lovely. We ended up asking for takeaway boxes because we had a lot left. Prices were reasonable for where we were and what we got.

Great food at this pub and relaxed service just sit down like a normal pub and go order at bar. Monday to wednesday they have two pizzas for £20 in the evening and they are really fantastic pizzas good crisp base very good sauce also very good pepperoni. Crispy chilli beef was great with huge helping of beef and the satay curry was super! With lots of fresh veg and even had bonito flakes on the rice. Also, puddings were generous portions, really nice but we could have shared one. Could have come here for the whole holiday with how much variety they have on the menu.
Doug — Google review
Unfortunately the food wasn't edible at all I ordered the 10oz steak I asked for it well done but it was burnt and I couldn't get my steak knife through it. My wife ordered fish and chips when I went to the bar to complain about the steak the very pleasant member of staff asked what she could do ie a refund I was hungry and was told it would take a while for another steak. In the end I ordered fish and chips which was vile hardly any fish and all batter,my wife didn't eat all her fish as she said it wasn't nice. Then when I had to ask for the difference in price for the fish and chips and the steak which I feel should have been handled by a member of staff not myself. The staff were young and doing a great job under a very busy pub however I feel as though the place was very understaffed which may have been the reason for this poor visit. As a first time visitor i feel that you must improve your food and get more staff to cope.
Philip D — Google review
Nipped in on a Sunday lunchtime. We sat outside in the courtyard with the fish pond which was really nice. Food was great, we had a big table and people ordered everything from burgers to Sunday roasts and everyone really enjoyed their food. Three of us had pizza and all of us were really impressed with them. Proper freshly made pizza and a step above what I was expecting from a lunch at a pub and all at really reasonable prices Would definitely return

Popped in here on a Friday afternoon. Pub was nice, sat in the back garden by the little waterfall and had fish and chips!, which were very nice. Quick service and friendly staff. Good stuff all round.

Indian restaurant
The Balti Restaurant, located in the heart of Matlock town centre on Dale Road, is a go-to spot for those craving mouth-watering curries and classic Indian dishes. The intimate and softly lit dining room sets the stage for enjoying a wide variety of high-quality dishes made with authentic spices and ingredients. Whether you're in the mood for their signature Balti special, lamb saag, king prawn curry or vegetable korma, this restaurant has got you covered.
Our meal here was a real treat. Although we'd booked for bang on opening time, they hit the ground running, ready to welcome and serve us immediately. The food was beautiful and the decor, atmosphere and service ticked every box. They provided a high chair for our grandson too. Highly recommended and one we'd like to revisit.

Food was awful , naan was uncooked , tarka dal tasted like water bland no taste at all , we were told it is authentic Indian food , but I can say no where near authentic Indian taste , just bland uncooked food .
Praful K — Google review
The food is to die for, fresh and hot. Great staff are friendly and attentive. Parking is an issue, but there are plenty of car parks around Matlock Bath, the heights of Abraham being the closest, we went on our anniversary we did not book and where a le to get a table, it was busy so would recommend booking so not to be disappointed, they also do takeaway as well 😋
Ruth C — Google review
Food was amazing! Enough from one meal to feed two people easily. Prices are good for the quality of food. Best of all the staff were so happy to help. They offered made me a half chicken and half veg curry as they knew I was undecided. They also made my curry mild as I requested. Honestly staff went above and beyond.

I had a pleasure to dine out in this lovely place. It's a place where you can taste authentic Indian cuisine. The meal was delicious and supreme, fresh tasting and adjusted to tanginess preferences. The portions are generous, you won't leave hungry. The menu is varied, for sure you'll find something for your taste. Have a look at wine list - the wine recommended by the staff was ideal and one of the best I've ever had. All reasonably priced. The customer service was amazing, very friendly, helpful and professional staff- there was no problem to adjust hot intensity of the meal, swap some ingredients and get wine recommendations. On the top of that- the place itself. It's decorated in modern way but still cosy and you feel welcome. The decor is fabulous. Music just completes the whole atmosphere, connecting the sublime meal, delicious food smells, excellent taste, the restaurant decor all together. My recommendation is 10 out of 5, it's one of the best places I have dined out (it's not only about the excellent food but the whole place itself) and for sure I'll be back when I'm in the area. PS. The restaurant is moved to the corner building.

Delicious poppadoms and subtle pickes. We shared starters that were also delicious. We enjoyed our mains a lot, however the Makhani dish was tasty but had a slight flavour of Heinz tomato soup. The chicken Murgh Masala was great.
Alex S — Google review
Lamb bhuna tasted very mediocre very bland and tasteless, Ive tasted better curry Asda curry for 1. Partners meal was very disapointing. will not be visiting again, if you want curry avoid this place because the food has no depth of flavour you would expect at a decent curry house.
Colin B — Google review
I have been to the balti several times before when at its old premises. I came to meet friends for dinner and I'm not sure what's happened (and it seems my opinion differs from most other reviews) but I found it was no where near as nice as I remember. We were a group of 5 and had a mix of meals between us. I chose the tandoori chicken tikka and tarka daal. The chicken was cooked well and tasted good, came with a salad and vegetable sauce (incidentally tasted very similar to the aubergine dish my friend had) . I'd say nice but didn't particularly stand out. Tarka daal is usually one of my favourite dishes, however in my opinion this one was bland and lacked any depth. Similar reports across our entire group. None of the dishes seemed to have much flavour or spice (for taste or heat. I generally don't like things to hot but this was the extreme opposite). Service was nice albeit slow. General overall feeling... mediocre and better options can be found within the vicinity. Wouldn't say no to a meal here if invited, but wouldn't go out of my way to book another myself any time soon. Maybe it was an off night?

Nestled in the charming town of Matlock Bath, The Seafood Cave & Grill is a top choice for those seeking an exquisite dining experience. This restaurant takes pride in serving premium Scottish seafood, offering a delectable array of dishes such as Battered Fash Fae Peterheid and surf n turf. Despite its unassuming location, it has garnered rave reviews for its impeccable service and mouthwatering cuisine.
So for the last time before the venue closes next month I returned to the Seafood Cave & Grill. The only place I'd never sat was the chefs table and last night we were seated there. Matlock really have lost a gem here. The food was just delicious. I really hope to see them in another venue soon. The service, the intimacy of the place, the food, was all just perfect to/for me. Thank you for 5 beautiful dining experiences 😢
Illyana P — Google review
Really pleasant atmosphere, with delicious seafood. Hadn't booked popped in just to see if we could be seated. Experienced lovely fresh food. Shame the outdoor bit at the back isn't utilised for drinks seating, etc, as it's got a magical feel.
Red H — Google review
Superb seafood. Tasty and clearly fresh. Cooked and plated in view of you. Get the mixed fish grill, 4 pieces of the days fish. Would be great if they were able to seat people in the cave, but health and safety may not approve. The owner is obviously into her sea food and chooses only the best. This may affect the menu, but that will be great.
Peter W — Google review
Lovely little restaurant, with excellent food. They catered well to my slightly complicated dietary requirements, and everyone in our group of 5 had a delicious meal. The fish was cooked perfectly (which I suppose you'd hope would be a bare minimum for a seafood restaurant but you can never be sure!). The desserts we had were also very good, as was the wine. The kitchen is open so you can see your food being prepared, and it looks reassuringly clean and tidy! Ian the chef seems like a nice bloke too, and made me feel like my dietary needs were no problem at all. The building itself is quirky, tucked away in a courtyard and built into the side of the cliff, so it almost reminds me of the places built into the caves in Granada, Spain!
Saskia M — Google review
I wanted to eat at a seafood restaurant. I found this via Google. I had the seafood platter to start. Very large portion. Plenty of delicious seafood, nice sauces... (Maybe needs another slice of bread to mop them). My wife had the calamari special and enjoyed them too. I then had the fish mixed grill. Lovely food again. Several fish, served with gambas and pan fried carrots and parsnips. My wife had the fish and chips which she enjoyed. We had great desserts to finish with. I had a carrot cake and my wife a cheesecake. They are both handmade. We don't visit the area often but if we do, we will pay this restaurant another visit. It's worth it.
Pascal J — Google review
The Seafood Cave really is a gorgeous gem that feels built on love and a focus on quality - quality ingredients, service, presentation, and a beautiful authentic interior with all its quirks. I still can’t get over how incredible our food was. With an open kitchen to see your food being prepared and a window to the lit up cave, it was such an enriching dining experience. The energy is amazing at this restaurant - and it goes to show when the chefs and waitress were so kind and joyful and couldn’t do enough for you. One of the best places I’ve been. The people and quality ingredients truly make it the gem it is.
Sarah M — Google review
The welcome we got was superb the specials were explained very clearly. The food was excellent and presented very well. We will definitely be back even though they are an hour and a half away from our house. Oh and they are most definitely OPEN
Toby S — Google review
Came here a year ago and the seafood platter was amazing. Unfortunately things have gone down hill with new ownership. Ordered the same seafood platter expecting to come with grilled octopus, a mousse and samphire. Neither the octopus nor the samphire were there at all and a watery sauce was apparently the mousse. Cannot express how disappointing this was, and it wasn’t even mentioned when ordering we had to point this out. Mussels and scollops were over cooked and tiny and mushy. And the prawn Marie Rose was purple?! Wishing I ordered the steak now. Can’t believe how much this place has gone down hill, and even though they took £6 off our bill, it pales in significance to the £30 they charged for the platter. Do not recommend until this new ownership sort things out. Stay clear.

Located in a small corner just a short distance from the main highstreet, New China Rose is a popular choice among local residents. Apart from their delicious takeout options, New China Rose provides an authentic Chinese dining experience, complete with flavorful cuisine and attentive and friendly staff. If you're looking for a change from the usual fish and chips or ice cream, this restaurant offers a relaxing evening meal option.
Amazing food great portion sizes. We stopped in on a whim, which was definitely worth it. The outside doesn't look like it's a restaurant, but ignore the exteria and go and be amazed by the food. The staff are friendly helpful and polite.
Zoe L — Google review
Absolutely fantastic food, don't be deceived by the outside as it needs a little updating, but once you're inside it's beautifully clean and great service. The food was all cooked to order and tasted deliciously fresh, the meat was moist and tender and the sauces were beautifully seasoned, not at all too salty. The chef himself came to check we were enjoying our meal. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and would gladly come back again ASAP!
Harrison M — Google review
I recently visited New China Rose in Matlock Bath, and it was a fantastic experience all around. The quality of the food was excellent — everything tasted fresh, well-prepared, and full of flavour. There was a wide range of dishes to choose from, and we were truly spoiled for choice. Whether you’re a fan of classic favourites or want to try something new, there’s something for everyone on the menu. The service was equally impressive: fast, friendly, and attentive. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it a great place to relax and enjoy a meal. Located right in the heart of Matlock Bath, it’s in an ideal spot whether you’re exploring the area or just passing through. Prices were very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. Highly recommended for anyone craving great Chinese cuisine in a lovely setting!

One of the best Chinese meals we've had in a long time. The satay sauce is amazing. I can recommend this restaurant. Don't let the exterior fool you, inside it is nice and cosy. The food is excellent.
Richard B — Google review
Good Chinese restaurant with friendly staff and not expensive. Duck fried rice had nice and crispy duck. Ginger and spring onion beef has nice fresh ginger slices, usual Chinese beef. Rice side portion was a bit small.
Doug — Google review
Lovely restaurant on the first floor of the building. Decorated with Chinese regalia to enhance the experience. Great service from lovely staff. Food was very average and the Tsingtao beer tasted very wishy washy - like a catering version.
Helen B — Google review
Everything was great! They had a great range of veggie/ vegan dishes, the food tasted fresh, it was served very hot and all round delicious! The service was friendly and efficient too. Will be back if we are ever in the peaks again!
Annabelle D — Google review
Very dirty and tired looking outside and even more so inside. Dirty table cloth and very dirty carpet our feet felt like they was sticking to it. The carpet to the stairs going up is just shocking. The food was average, the prawns in the chow main and the chicken in the curry was rubbery. Chips was OK salt and pepper but some other taste to them as well that i couldn't place.

Tucker's Fish & Chips is a must-visit in Matlock Bath, a seaside resort with a classic British vibe. With at least ten fish and chips shops along the riverside promenade, it's an essential part of the seaside experience. The history of this quintessentially British dish dates back to a royal marriage in the 15th century, adding an interesting cultural touch to your meal.
Gluten-free heaven 😋.. Staff are fully aware and knowledgeable about coeliac food intolerance, which was so reassuring for my partner, who is coeliac. I also prefer gluten-free batter, and this is the best. From the moment we walked in to leaving, it was a lovely experience. Fish was tasty and chips both plentiful and perfectly cooked. 5* for the food and staff.

First time visiting Tuckers and was very impressed! Gluten free chips and friendly service. We even ordered another portion of the chips as they were so tasty! Dog friendly and went the extra mile with a free sausage for him that they had spare. Will be visiting again and letting my gluten free friends know about this hidden treasure! We finished off with ice creams, (we ate the chips too quick to take a photo!)

Kostas Fish Bar is a must-visit spot in Matlock Bath for delicious fish and chips. The friendly staff and generous portions make it stand out. They offer a mini fish option with just the right amount of crispy batter, and their freshly cooked food ensures top quality. The cod is described as beautiful white, thick, and fresh. Customers also praise the tasty curry sauce that adds an extra kick to the meal.
A great fish and chip shop, amazing food, service and food. The portion size was massive and the quality was so good so glad we waited for a table it did not disappoint. Would highly recommend this chippy for the service and quality. Will definitely visit here again. Plenty of seating and selections for all. After seeing the size of the mini fish meal we didn’t need to get the bigger cod one but we managed it :-)
Rajeev C — Google review
We were recommended Kostas and it never disappointed. There's plenty of options to choose from. We had beautiful (or Bootifal, if you're from Suffolk) pieces of fish n chips here, all reasonably priced. It was straight out of the pan, good sizes and top quality. We chose to eat in, with a roll and cuppa. However you can eat outside or takeaway. Eating inside is nothing special, but the quality more than made up for this. Highly recommend..Thank you to the staff and fryers.
Neil F — Google review
Nicest fish and chips away from the sea that I've had! Mini portion is plenty for an adult, and one of the sauce options is baked beans which is fab. Service lovely and very efficient despite it being very busy (obviously busy because it's delicious!) Also great value for money.
Millie — Google review
We visited this shop recently and their fish and chips are really good and served with curry sauce or peas as per request. However the chips are less but it is more than enough for single person and it taste crisp and soft. Fish is so fresh and crisp as well. We also tried fish cake, which tasted fresh and good. They have more space to dine in... Both inside and outside, but so crowded during peak hours. The staffs are super friendly and serves very fast. Clean place.

Great place for chips , had the meat and potato pie which was spot on , staff were friendly, service was good ,

Nice food, bit busy, nice staff, but as it is busy it also is bit untidy on floors and very loud inside. 2 mini fish with chip, small sausage, 2 gravies and 2 cans of cola total £20
Ruta C — Google review
We preordered fish and chips and various accompaniments and it was all freshly made for us when we got there. There was 7 of us and when we finished there wasn’t a scrap left - it was all delicious especially the cod and my favourite the curry sauce- the best fish and chips I have had for a long time

Fish and chips takeaway
Fish & chips restaurant
Takeout Restaurant
Riverside Fish Bar is a popular spot, especially before the Matlock illuminations. Despite being full, the service was efficient with quick order taking and food serving. The fish and chips were piping hot, with lovely crisp batter and well-cooked chips. However, some found the tables to be not very clean and felt that it was a bit expensive for what was offered. On the positive side, they offer gluten-free options and generous portion sizes.
Discovered this place when we had a walk into Matlock Bath in the summer. It's fantastic to know they serve gluten free chips at any time, rather than it being on a specific day. The staff were pleasant and sorted out two different requests (one gluten free, one Muggle), with plenty of salt and vinegar available. My wife had gravy on hers, but I'm unsure if a GF option is offered. Next time we go I'll find out and ask about sausages and other things that may have changed. They have a sit-down café / restaurant if you fancy a more relaxed meal with proper plates and cutlery, with an outside seating area. We had ours to take out and it was enjoyable to walk along the side of the river with a tray of chips - just like the old days!
Jason B — Google review
The waiter was very friendly, the space is cozy and with good views of the river ... Very charming place ! The potatoes were nice , I didn't like the pie of chicken and mushroom so much .
Ricardo F — Google review
Comfortably the worst chips I have ever eaten. Starchy, undercooked, no salt or vinegar offered and smothered in gloopy sauce (probably in an attempt to hide the pale potatoes!) The passing wasps didn't even want to eat them - I can't say I blame them. Needless to say, please learn from my mistake - spend your money and time in one of the surrounding restaurants!!!

"Summer driving to Matlock Bath is a joy!" My middle son exclaimed."It's so beautiful!" You should really enjoy this drive. The verdant bucolic forest is a delight to view as you drive up to Matlock. And you can point out the different types of trees to your children. Common Ash, Oak, Poplar, European Beech, Sycamore Maple, Crack Willow, etc. are just a few species you can point out. Riverside Fish Bar is amongst the most "popular" in Matlock Bath, as you can see. The staff are super friendly and will go out of their way to help you. Try the Haddock, Chips and Mushy peas. Delicious!
Suraj A — Google review
This place used to be great, also the only chippy to offer gluten free. Went tonight, gone are the real plates and mugs, polystyrene and cardboard were all they used, plastic fork not metal knife and fork and no serviettes. Fish was ok, peas acceptable, the few chips tasted old. No gluten free available so someone remained hungry. Will NOT eat there again.
Phil — Google review
The worst fish and chips i have ever eaten.the fish was dry and the batter was chewy 4 of us and all the meals were of the same standard. Have eaten here on numerous occasions and it has been lovely but unfortunately a huge disappointment today. Will go elsewhere in future. Plenty more fish bars to choose from
Rachel L — Google review
I had chips sausage and gravy, my wife had mini fish and chips and my elderly mother had chips Friday 18th July 2025 Which was all very nice, the staff were lovely, BUT this place is in some serious need of an upgrade refurbishment, the tables although clean are in a bad state that many of them need replacing and the bench seats are shabby and torn with tape allover the pads the interior is seriously letting this place down, with other eateries nearby I probably would eat elsewhere just because of its looks 🤔which is a shame cos the food is great 🫤
Christopher S — Google review
Lovely setting on the side of the river, clean with a view. We had the special, food was hot but the fish was awful, quite thin and the skin still on the fish, not the best tasting, not very enjoyable. Peas were over coloured and bright green.

Hotel
Hodgkinsons Hotel Matlock Bath is a charming property located on the edge of the National Park in the beautiful Peak District. Housed in a Georgian building, this Grade II listed hotel offers individually decorated guestrooms with elegant designs and modern amenities. The rooms overlook the picturesque River Derwent, and guests can enjoy a cooked-to-order breakfast in the dining room with antique lighting and fresh flowers. The hotel also features a secluded roof garden for relaxation.
Very misleading from the outside and even perhaps when you enter, but the rooms were spotless with everything you'd get at a Premier Inn. It's a listed building, so it's old but well decorated. The breakfast was superb with loads of choice. Comfortable bed and nice shower. Nicely situated for sightseeing - parking on site (but up a steep hill but you are warned about this).
Gillian M — Google review
I really couldn't fault this lovely hotel. Room was immaculate and spacious, plenty of coffee, tea and bottles of water. Lovely sitting area by the bedroom window to look out onto the river. Breakfast was fantastic with so much to choose from. I would highly recommend.
Lisa T — Google review
Lovely hosts, they made us feel very welcome and looked after us while we were there. The hotel is quirky and full of character so if you're a fan of vintage style you'll love this. Breakfast was amazing also and the atmosphere felt like stepping back in time. Bathroom could use a revamp and a bigger shower. Small bits around the room could use a bit more dusting and/or mending. The room was very comfortable however and the bed was very clean and cozy. Location is great, you're right in the middle of the busy Matlock bath (on a summer day especially) and the fact it has free parking is ideal.
Anamaria E — Google review
Lovely stay at Hodgkinsons Hotel 2 nights over the May Bank Holiday weekend the proprietors couldn't have been more helpful. Great breakfast with a large choice would definitely consider staying there again.
Mark H — Google review
If you like olde worldy, youll love this hotel however, also bear in mind that to access the top floor rooms, you'll need to climb 45 steps every time so it's not for those with mobility issues. Our room entitled Mayfield was nice but did not deserve to be called deluxe or exceptional and, whilst there was complimentary tea, coffee, biscuits and water, the milk was out of date and curdled the tea and, there were no tissues so you had to blow your nose on toilet paper. Although not the owners, the couple who run the hotel were friendly and accommodating and their breakfast choices were good as was its quality and presentation. Unfortunately however, because there is no bar or restaurant available, you are forced to brave the elements on foot or by car and find somewhere else to patronize every evening. The hotel is well situated to access the numerous places of interest in the locality and there is free private parking albeit up a very steep hill so, drop your bags off at the hotel before you park up.

The hotel is amazing. Rooms are just fantastic, great set up. Location is fantastic (Matlock Bath is small so I suppose everywhere is a great Location ;) ) The breakfast absolutely chefs kiss. (The bacon is amazing). Thoroughly recommended to absolutely anyone.

Restaurant
Nestled atop Abraham's Height, Vista Bar & Restaurant is a delightful culinary gem that offers an array of seasonal menus and special dishes crafted by talented chefs. Whether you're in the mood for breakfast, lunch, or refreshing drinks, this spot has you covered. You can choose to dine on the charming balcony, inside with breathtaking floor-to-ceiling windows, or in the serene garden courtyard.
Food hugely exceeded expectations for a tourist attraction. We had the nachos with pulled pork and they were excellent, fresh, home-made, and large. Recommended.
Jon M — Google review
The clan came up in the cable cars and we had a reservation booked here yet nothing seemed reserved and it felt very impulsive with the staff. We were shown to some tables but it was very crowded inside and we requested another spot so got seated outside, thankfully it was a nice enough day. Once the order was in place the food took a while to come out and it came out staggered so some had to wait longer for their food. The food itself wasn't anything to write home about. All the pasta dishes were over cooked and were soft and mushy. Yet I liked the nachos as they were freshly fried even though they were a little over done. It's really the only place for food up here but the town isn't fair off. Yet I guess the location means they can get away with a lot more laxity. It's pretty pricey for what you get but I think on a quieter day the food would be better prepared. Hope you have a better experience than we did. Enjoy.

Vista Bar & Restaurant, perched atop Abraham's Height, offers a fantastic spot to enjoy a refreshing beer and a delicious lunch while taking in the stunning valley views. A visit to this location wouldn’t be complete without stopping by Vista. We had a wonderful family outing on the mountain, which we wrapped up with a somewhat satisfying meal at the restaurant. Our order included pizza, a Chicken Tikka Wrap, and fries. While the portions were slightly on the smaller side for the price, the flavors made up for it—especially the Chicken Tikka, which was the highlight of our meal. The best was the view from the top and the customer service. Food can be improved.

Personally I didn’t love the vegan burger I’d ordered as I thought it was quite bland, but my son and daughter-in-law did enjoy the dishes they’d ordered. Drinks were good and service was great. As it was a lovely day, albeit windy, we sat outside so we could enjoy the sun and views. My final thoughts are that I would visit here again, but I wouldn’t order the vegan burger!
Caroline F — Google review
Had a panini in the cafe. As the photo shows the filling is only around the outer edge. The inside is devoid of any filling. This is an absolute disgrace, charging £8.95 for a mostly dry piece of bread. You are better off taking a picnic and enjoying the views available.
Gavin L — Google review

As soon as we walked through the door we where greeted by some lovely staff members who offered us a outside table with an amazing view Food arrived and it was amazing both taste and presentation ( see photos ) Will definitely be back
DJ R — Google review
Me and my family went there for lunch and had already made a reservation in advance. They asked us if we wanted to sit inside or outside and we were happy with outside seating. We got sat and then came time to order we ordered our food. About 20minutes later our starters came out and we had finished those then they took our dishes back. The food was all home made and good portion sizes but the kids menu options all come with chips on the side this wasn't stated on the menu so we ordered more chips and ended up with extra chips. I got the pasta but it was soft and mushy and the sauce was really watery. The service wasn't the greatest, most of the workers were just walking around not bothered people were waiting for them but there was this one lady called Bethan who was the most hardworking one of them all she was literally running around to do things for people and make sure everyone had what they needed and made our visit just that much better. One thing i was say is that it was quite expensive. But overall wasn't terrible.

Restaurant
Charles is a charming spot that offers a mix of experiences, though opinions vary widely. On one hand, some visitors have found the fish to be less than satisfactory, particularly when it comes to gluten-free options. A couple reported their meal included boiled fish without batter and peas that had an unusual taste, leading them to feel disappointed with both the food quality and value for money. The decor was described as quirky but cluttered, which added to their overall dissatisfaction.
Awesome breakfast. Well cooked and presented. It arrived in minutes too, I was well impressed by that; though it was a quite Sunday morning. The waitress even allowed to pour a cup of tea from the pot and then she refilled it for me. Prices are reasonable considering the great service and food provided. Will visit again. Highly recommend.

We had a small adult meal each £7.50 which comes with chips and side, peas etc. the small fish you get for that was quite big actually, and steak pie was a small slice. Chips were good normal chip shop chips nothing wrong with them. Fish was good. The steak pie was very packed with quality steak which made it's small size totally fine. Friendly staff and it's different that it's table service. Would be nice if they added the sides to the menu. Also, drinks were quite expensive.

Fabulous fish and chips meal, 5 star. Excellent value, well presented, very clean, good service & friendly staff. We sat outside on a beautiful evening. Very impressive, we will definitely visit again. Thank you.

Came in for a coffee & a bit of breakfast, mainly because every other place in Matlock Bath was closed. Charles's strikes me as a long lived establishment, the staff are friendly & welcoming, the coffee was ok, although I've had better. The food was pretty good, we had a bacon, sausage & egg breakfast sandwich, a real doorstep, you get your moneys worth. Quirky surroundings in the restaurant area. I can't comment on the rooms as we were not staying here. Worth a visit.

Just stopped in for a full English which I think is always judged by the sausages and bacon. This brekky was fabulous and I will never make fried bread again because this was the best ever. Super value for money as well, was served quickly and with a welcoming smile 😃 thank you

This is seriously the best place to eat in Matlock! The owner is so friendly and the staff go above and beyond in the service department I went in on a Wednesday and I recommend the pie for meat eaters but however my partner is gluten free but they have a good selection It caters for dietary requirements 👌 If I could give it 6 stars 🌟 I would Even dog friendly!!! Fantastic
David S — Google review
Been here before and really enjoyed it but on this occasion you’ve let yourself down. Kitchen staff arguing with waitresses in public area, because the waitress asked when they can start serving fish and chips. If kitchen staff are stressed they need to deal with it another way rather than reducing other staff members to tears in front of customers Your good reputation can be lost in an instant!

Halls Ice Cream is a delightful stop for anyone visiting the bustling town of Matlock. Known for its impressive array of sweets and lollies, this charming spot offers a fantastic selection that keeps visitors coming back for more. While many rave about the ice cream's incredible taste and variety—especially the mint flavor—the only downside is their cash-only policy at present. Despite the weekend crowds, Halls Ice Cream remains a must-visit destination for those seeking a sweet treat in this vibrant area!
Yes Matlock is busy, very busy. Don't go there in a weekend. But when you go there and you want the best ice crean in town, please go here!! Amazing tast and viriaty of ice cream!! Love the mint one!! I go / come back.
Lady F — Google review
Man was extremely rude serving, rolled his eyes when asked for sauce and was just very very rude and made me feel extremely uncomfortable. The ice cream man on the carpark up the road was very nice and friendly and I e cream delicious... will never return to this shop he needs his attitude checking
Hannah C — Google review
Aside from the insult of asking for 50p for a flake when the ice cream itself is already at an inflated price of £5, it was the worst ice cream I’ve ever tasted in my life. I’ve never been compelled to leave a review about something as trivial as this, but it really is that bad. I’m not sure what the Halls thing is about but evidently it is a hoodwinking branding gimmick. You can truly get better tasting ice cream from a tub at Aldi. Having just been to an excellent ice cream place in Shrewsbury (£4.50 for the equivalent), I suggest if the owners have any sense of pride about quality that they do a bit more market research on what a £5 ice cream should taste like. Particularly during a cost of living crisis, this really is a slap in the face.
John B — Google review
We visit Matlock bath often. and usually pop in This ice-cream shop for a treat on the way home. NEVER again!! Due to the awful older woman behind the counter. My partner ordered our ice-cream and she obviously misheard the order, When corrected she spat her dummy out and carried on saying he had ordered wrong. He hadn't because I was stood right next to him, Anyhow as we walked out she Shouted sarcasticly "The customer is always right" Well let me tell you she got it both barrels from him ,,, The cheek mare,, Rude woman needs to accept it's ok if you get things wrong, just accept it, Don't try and show customers up ,
Ann T — Google review
What a fantastic array of different flavour ice creams Sadly we didn't get a chance to try them all but what we did have was absolutely delicious.
Fiona M — Google review
Nice sweetshop but the ice cream was very lacklustre and flavourless. No signs to say they only accept cash so had to walk quite far down the street to get cash from where I was told there was a machine, which charged me £1.50. In this day and age there is no excuse except tax evasion to be cash only. Definitely wouldn't go here again
Jordan17401 — Google review
Cash only which is quite frustrating, especially as not obvious before you order. Ordered the creme egg flavour but didn't taste much flavour at all.
Jonathan J — Google review
Ice cream was lovely, however the main Halls ice creams only takes cash, there are no signs anywhere stating this, albeit in all the other Halls ice cream shops there is a sign on the front door saying cash only. I was told there was a cash machine 6 doors down at the amusements. The cash machine charges £1.50 to withdraw cash. On returning to the shop explaining this, the staff were rude and abrupt with me when again questioned where the cash only sign was. They don’t have one! She did however take the £1.50 charge off the price of the ice cream so that was nice. But really need to sort a card machine out or have signs that clearly state “CASH ONLY”

Did not have any food or access the restaurant, I will sitting on the bench outside the tavern waiting for my daughter to come out of the toilets nearby. My dog was sat next to me (daughter had accidentally taken the lead with her). The cashier lady, Sophia Hill came out and shouted “whose dog is that!” She was very intimidating, when I explained the dog was mine and was waiting for my daughter to come out of the bathroom with the lead she threatened to take my dog away if he was not put on a lead immediately. He is a therapy dog, was not causing any harm or distress to others. This behaviour was intimidating and threatening and not acceptable from staff at a family friendly park, very very rude and will not be going near that tavern again. Very embarrassing for someone with a social anxiety issue who has a therapy dog.
