Castle
Sights & Landmarks
St Andrews Castle, located on the east coast of Scotland in Fife, is a 13th-century coastal castle with ruins that once served as the residence for bishops and archbishops. Over its 450-year history, it transformed from an ecclesiastical palace to a fortress and state prison. The castle features secret passages, including a medieval tunnel from a siege in 1546, and a dungeon where Cardinal Beaton was imprisoned.
Fantastic place to visit. If your friends or family don't want to visit the ruins from inside, they can wait just a few minutes away on the beach that offers great views. The audio guide is very good, easily can spend 40-60 mins here, or more if you plan your picnic too.
Peter G — Google review
Very interesting and dark history behind this castle. Very picturesque location on the cliffs of St Andrew’s. You can see the castle easily from outside the fence, but exploring the inside is worthwhile.
Michal B — Google review
St Andrews Castle sits right on the edge of the sea, and there’s something striking about how its ruins rise against the waves. Even though much of it has crumbled, the place still feels powerful, like the stones are holding onto all the stories they’ve seen. This was once the home of bishops and a centre of power in medieval Scotland, so every wall feels like it has witnessed secrets, struggles, and celebrations. Walking through the site, you don’t just see history — you feel it. The bottle dungeon is small, dark, and unsettling, a space that makes you imagine the fear of those who were once locked inside. The underground mine and counter-mine are even more remarkable; crawling through those tunnels gives you a sense of how desperate and determined people were during times of siege. Then you step outside, and the view across the North Sea takes your breath away. The contrast between the beauty of the landscape and the harshness of the castle’s past is part of what makes it so memorable. St Andrews Castle isn’t just another ruin. It’s a place where the drama of history meets the raw beauty of nature, and it leaves a lasting impression.

A must for visiting St Andrews. I love how it is perched on the sea, and i particularly like the museum because it's very interesting and the staff there are lovely. The gift shop is really nice too, they have some very nice things in there. I have a Historic Scotland membership, so I come every time I go to St Andrews. Twinning it with the cathedral is a brilliant idea too. The ruins are very interesting and it's fascinating picturing what it was once like. Excellent!!
RubyPlayz54 — Google review
I stopped by this historic site while passing through St Andrew's. It was on the visit Scotland package I had purchased so I figured why not. I'm glad I made some time for this place, as it does have quite the storied past. Although it is only a part of what it once was, the visitor center has a lot of great displays and history of the castle. I really enjoyed the mine and counter-mine warfare descriptions, but unfortunately the mine area was under repair. As an engineer, I was really interested in this site. Oh well. Such is the price to maintain history. Thanks for the quick visit.
Troy C — Google review
Nice little castle to wander round. The exhibition at the start was good, the staff were friendly and really helpful. It only got a 4 stars because in typical Historic Scotland fashion the best areas are closed for renovation but they don't reflect this in their prices. Toilets on site and plenty of benches. The views out onto the water are really nice.
Rose B — Google review
Incredible drone filming location - history meets coastal drama As a drone videographer, St Andrews Castle is one of the most visually striking historical sites in Scotland. Perched dramatically on a cliff above the North Sea, the ruins offer sweeping aerial compositions - with a perfect blend of rugged stone, crashing waves, and the town’s character in the background. From above, the layout of the castle really comes alive - the inner courtyard, battlements, and the famous bottle dungeon all form stunning patterns when captured from the sky. The coastal light, especially during golden hour, adds amazing contrast and depth to shots. There’s also a great opportunity to pair footage with the nearby St Andrews Cathedral ruins — just a short walk away and equally spectacular from the air. Important note for fellow drone flyers: This area is close to town, so always check for local flying restrictions. Early mornings are usually quiet and ideal for undisturbed filming. Highly recommended for anyone capturing historical landscapes, coastal drama, or cinematic storytelling in Scotland. A timeless location that never disappoints.

Cathedral
Architectural Buildings
St Andrews Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St Andrew, is the ruins of Scotland's former largest church. Built in 1158, it played a significant role in Scottish religion until the mid-16th century. The cathedral was once the most important place of pilgrimage in Scotland and held great economic and political influence. Today, its remains are a recognizable sight in St Andrews and can be appreciated for their sheer size and grandeur.
Very nice monument. It has a great history. TbeCathedral is free to get in. We didn't have time though. The looks of it is stunning. It was a bit windy so you need a jacket even in the summer. The view from there is amazing and you can have beautiful landscape photos.
Ellh C — Google review
we enjoyed a fantastic tour with Mark who shared his incredible knowledge of St Andrews' history with us, and we even got to enjoy the great view on top of the tower. I would definitely recommend joining one of the tours on site if you're visiting!
Charlie C — Google review
Absolutely phenomenal ruins of the once must've been amazing cathedral. The current state is still impressive and an absolute must when in the area. Interesting stories about how the relics of St Andrew where brought there. No tickets required to enter the site. Many beautiful tomb stones scattered across the site.
Filip S — Google review
Wow, what an amazing piece of Scottish history and it's free to enter but you can give them a donation if you fell like it. Walking around the grounds let you see just how big this area and the cathedral is. The 160 stairs up to the top of St Rule's Tower is quite a steep climb and not for people with difficulty walking or are maybe a bit claustrophobic. The views from the tip are quite magnificent and worth the climb.
Scott — Google review
An absolutely incredible place (and free to visit)! I'd highly recommend joining one of the free tours happening twice daily. When I went in early September, they took place at 11am and 3pm. Our guide Kyle was very friendly, patient and knowledgeable, and clearly has a passion for the history of St Andrews. Definitely a highlight of our day trip.
Cris A — Google review
St Andrews Cathedral is a fascinating historical ruin that's well worth a visit. The ruin, although weathered by centuries of history, still retains its imposing character and offers a glimpse into medieval life. Very good location for photographers or history lovers.
Dhiraj P — Google review
We did the free guided tour at the cathedral with Kyle. It was fun and interesting, and he made it easy to follow. Totally worth it, and the place is very beautiful and the tour adds something special to the place.
Lucas M — Google review
We were very fortunate to have arrived just in time for the 11am free tour. Our guide Kyle was very friendly and knowledgeable. We also had the opportunity to climb the tallest tower still standing (25 metres). The tour could have been slightly shorter but it still interactive and informative.

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
St Andrews Aquarium, situated in the historic coastal town of St. Andrews, offers a captivating experience with its diverse collection of marine and land creatures. Overlooking the picturesque bay and renowned golf course, the aquarium is home to an array of fascinating animals such as seals, penguins, meerkats, sharks, rays, frogs, arachnids and various fish species. Visitors can enjoy interactive demonstrations, animal talks and feeding sessions while learning about the lifestyles of these remarkable creatures.
Had bought a family ticket voucher which was unfortunately out of date. Phoned ahead and was told the aquarium would still honour it which was great. Friendly staff upon entry and throughout. Exhibits are well maintained and animals look well cared for and happy. To note there are talks at certain times of the day for some exhibits. The sharks and rays tank was awesome, with some of the sharks and rays popping out of the water in places.
David G — Google review
As an aquarium enthusiast living in Scotland, I had to visit st Andrews' one. It was fantastic, I really loved the vivariums and the meerkats as well. There's also real Scottish SHARKS, insane. The tanks are clean and the fish looks happy, which is all I care about. 7/5 would definitely go back again if only it was easy to go to st Andrews but somehow they decided they didn't want a train station
Tristan S — Google review
Enjoyed our wander about seeing lots of marine sealife that can be found in and around our Scottish coastline. The shark and Ray talk and feeding was interesting with lots of information and a good nudge to everyone to find out more and take interest in these amazing marine species
Marie — Google review
Wonderful little aquarium, I've gone many times over the past few years and it's always a good time. The talks are very interesting. The staff are lovely. I've come here during my work as a carer a couple times and the staff are so good and understanding with the person I support.
Edenbru — Google review
Good place for children, quite small, especially what you pay for, in my opinion. Good place to go, though, if you're looking for stuff to do while in St Andrews
Jade E — Google review
Lovely place to visit, lots of sea creatures to see, also funny meerkats and penguins! Left better impression then I was expecting 😊 also beautiful area by the sea, where you have plenty of space for walks, restaurants and gift shop! Worth to visit!
Eva M — Google review
The aquarium was fantastic, plenty of different fish from all over the world, as well as a snapping turtle, terrapins, meerkats and penguins The staff are lovely people, very friendly, helpful, and full of local knowledge
Rosie K — Google review
Extremely rude and unprofessional staff. When we approached the penguin area, the staff conversed with the family who paid for the exhibit we were not made aware of. With no welcome or greeting, they completely ignored our presence. The tension in the room was so high you could cut it with a knife. It was obvious the staff was purposely ignoring us. This is not the type of behavior expected at all. Same thing at the front desk the older lady there ignored me when I talked to her. We were treated like we were invisible. Aquariums should create a friendly and welcoming environment. At the very least, staff should be responsive and respectful to all guests, not just selectively attentive to whoever they feel like serving. None of the three staff we encountered showed basic courtesy or hospitality. Overall, a very uncomfortable and unpleasant experience. Management seriously needs to train their staff better the way they treat paying guests is unacceptable.

St Andrews Botanic Garden spans 18 acres and boasts over 8000 native and exotic plant species, including ponds. The garden is a national treasure, offering a wealth of botanical and horticultural information to help people appreciate the importance of sustaining our planet. Visitors can explore features such as glasshouses, water features, a butterfly house, woodland walks, rock gardens, and flower exhibitions suitable for year-round visits.
Lovely place to have a walk and admire the paths and plants. Visit is late September so think possibly earlier in the year would be better as things are dying off. Excellent area for children. Nice wee coffee patio. Definitely will be back. Excellent value for money.
Elaine W — Google review
Interesting visit to a site that is aimed at plant and environmental development. Limited facilities but many interesting features that you do not find at more formal gardens. Well worth a visit and at a reasonable price.
Michael W — Google review
A beautiful little Botanic Garden with an incredible scree Garden! This Garden is located in a urban setting so the front gate was a little hard to find but we'll worth a visit. The only down side is that this Garden is not disabled friendly. The main path is full hard standing however at the far side of the garden there is a little step which could be a problem. Despite that, this is a wonderful place to visit!
ElinorBurnbrite — Google review
Lovely botanic garden. Very nice pond and flowers. We had to buy entry tickets to get in
Galina V — Google review
We live in Wimbledon, very close to Richmond Park, in South London and as a family we love going for walks. So naturally, when my daughter Siena and I visited her brother Kiro in St Andrews, we decided to spend some time at the Botanic Garden. It was a beautiful July day, sunny but not too hot and we enjoyed walking around, taking in the variety of plants. The garden feels very tranquil, the kind of place where you can simply wander slowly and appreciate nature. There is an entry ticket, as well as a café and a small shop, which makes the visit even more pleasant. If you are a lover of plants, flowers, and nature in general, the St Andrews Botanic Garden is worth visiting.
Paola P — Google review
Visited in autumn, really beautiful and well worth it. Investing in the gardens and nice to see such enthusiasm from the staff. Shop is cute, can also buy a coffee and cake or a plant!
Barry K — Google review
What a treasure! I had no idea this place existed, and I feel most people are the same as we very much had the place to ourselves apart from the odd other person. Beautiful gardens and a great play area for my little girl. Definitely worth a visit and ideal for a picnic on a sunny day!
Leona R — Google review
We had a really chilled and lovely walk around the botanic gardens on a sunny afternoon. There was enough to keep my 4 year engaged and a very cute outdoor seating area for a coffee. Despite the lovely weather it was quiet and felt like a bit of a hidden gem.

Situated near the Royal and Ancient Golf Clubhouse, The R&A World Golf Museum is a treasure trove for golf enthusiasts. It boasts an extensive collection of over 17,000 objects that trace the history of golf from the 15th century to modern times. Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing the evolution of the game, interactive displays for children, and a rooftop cafe.
Small but nicely decorated museum with lots of interactive displays and golf history to view
Dennis J — Google review
If you like golf in any way this is for you with lots of old historical data on the game and lots of interactive displays, it even has a small putting area for you to try out. There was a quiz for kids to do where they need to find out some information from various displays and there is even a crafting room with lots of things for the kids to do, it's about 100 yards from the aquarium.
Paul F — Google review
Staff were friendly, welcoming and lovely. It’s small but very interesting for a keen golfer, not so much for muggles. £17.50 is steep for a small museum.
Jeff M — Google review
Very informative museum with many interesting displays for passionate golfers. Staff were amazing including Steve and his female colleague in the gift shop. They were friendly and helpful and enjoyed a bit of banter and gave suggestions to a local caleigh. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Thank you from the Aussie who wants to be buried in his St Andrew's vest.
Neil P — Google review
Very interesting for golf lovers with lots of cool items. Super knowledgeable and keen staff. They even put on a kids craft activity when we were there which was very welcomed.
Jana R — Google review
A place enshrined with the wonder of golf. Though relatively small, it feels like a sanctuary for the appreciation and understanding of the history of golf from its early days on the wild hinterlands of Scotland to its development in the nineteenth century as a popular and widely appreciated game for the wealthy and fashionable attempting to connect with that ancient past. Now anyone can come and appreciate the clubs and balls that contributed to that history. There is a quiet calm and ceremonial serenity to this place that only the presence of centuries of stories and yearnings and artifacts can provide. Note especially the elegance and stylish design of the Claret Jug.
Joshua F — Google review
My golf mad sons enjoyed looking around. Well worth a visit. No pictures from inside but here are some around the area as there is so much golf history outside the museum too.
Cass G — Google review
AWESOME place with extremely friendly staff. We couldn’t have been treated nicer, or been better informed. The sweet ladies behind the counter even gave us recommendations for lunch based on a bunch of different criteria, and spent time telling us things we wouldn’t have known otherwise. The museum itself is super cool, and gives a great and succinct history of the game and it’s equipment. The former champion displays with a former golf club, or apparel item was cool to see - they even have a replica Claret Jug that is fully updated in its engravings. Overall we had a wonderful time and were very glad we stopped by!

St Rule's Tower offers visitors the opportunity to ascend and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the cathedral, town, and coastline. On clear days, this experience is a must-do when visiting St Andrews.
Nice tower.
Benjamin M — Google review
An impressive 108 foot tower built in the 11th century, predating the cathedral. Inside it contains an 18th century stone staircase and would offer excellent views over At Andrews from the top, had it not been closed at the time of my visit in January 2025. Nonetheless, the tower is a prominent landmark and one of the most recognisable structures in St Andrews, still easily viewed from outside the cathedral grounds.
Andrew T — Google review
St Rule’s Tower at the Pends in St Andrews was a bit of a letdown. The site is currently under maintenance, and when we visited, the entire area was fenced off and looked more like a construction zone than a historic site. It was hard to get a good view of the tower or appreciate its historical significance with all the construction going on. The surrounding grounds, including parts of the graveyard and ruins, were closed off, making it even harder to explore. Not only was access to most of the site restricted, but the area felt like a safety hazard with uneven paths and construction debris scattered around. It’s frustrating when a place that could have so much history to offer is so inaccessible. While St Andrews itself is a charming town, this particular spot is definitely one to skip until the maintenance work is completed. Hopefully, the tower will be restored to its former glory soon, but for now, it’s really not worth the visit.
Jay S — Google review
Even from the outside, this place is well worth taking a look at during a walk along the beach

The University of St Andrews, founded in the 1400s, boasts historic buildings spread throughout the city. Notably, it was once home to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Bell Pettigrew Museum, established in 1912 through a generous donation by Mrs. Elsie Bell Pettigrew, showcases a collection that reflects her involvement in its design.
The university of St Andrews is a lovely, old, historic institution set on the seaside city of quaint St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. My wife and I strolled around it, during our free time on our bus tour of Scotland after exploring the oldest golf course in the world, ‘The Old Course,’ the ruins of the tragic St Andrews cathedral and the famous nearby beach, the Saint Andrews West Sands, from the movie ‘Chariots of Fire.’ What a unique and wonderful university to be able to attend! Founded in 1413, it is Scotlands oldest and most prestigious university. It is the third oldest English speaking school in the world. It was founded by Catholic priest who were forced out of Paris, Oxford and Cambridge by politics. In 1876 they were one of the first universities to open to woman, but only by correspondence at first. The university has had its struggles over its long life and at one time only had 100 students. Now around 12,000 students attend this prestigious university. There is also a statue of Prince William where he met Kate, while they were students here.
Kevin J — Google review
No golfer can resist a trip to Saint Andrews. But if you only go to the old course, you’re missing out on one of the loveliest towns there is and did the heart of it is the University of St. Andrews. The ancient university sometimes better known as the place where the Prince and Princess of Wales attended, but I prefer to think of it and remember it as a world class institution that just happens to be next-door to a bunch of world class golf courses. It was not term time when I visited, but the few people I saw deleted with the school were friendly. And the campus buildings and grounds itself, dispersed among the town, were impeccable. I’d be happy to see members of my family attend, this venerable institution.
David S — Google review
Our son, Kiro, studied Philosophy at the University of St Andrews, and as parents, we feel it is only right to share something of our experience. This is not a review of teaching methods or academic structures; we cannot speak for those, but rather a personal reflection on life as the parent of a student, and the joy we felt in discovering this remarkable place alongside him. St Andrews itself is unlike anywhere else. Nestled on the coast, it feels both remote and timeless, with an atmosphere so enchanting that it seems almost unreal at times. Coming from London, each visit felt like stepping into another world, peaceful, picturesque, and steeped in history. The journey may not be the easiest by public transport, but perhaps that very distance is what has allowed the town to preserve its beauty and authenticity! We visited Kiro often, and every time we were struck by how safe and welcoming St Andrews felt. We never encountered difficulties, and the town always gave us a sense of reassurance, a gift for any parent sending their child away to study. Walking its cobbled streets, exploring the coastline, and sharing moments of everyday life with our son there gave us memories we will always treasure. We are deeply grateful that our son had the opportunity to study at such a distinguished university, in such an extraordinary setting. As parents, we too feel enriched by the experience of St Andrews, its charm, its history, and its warmth. It has been a privilege to know it and experience its magic.

We were visiting St Andrews for a day trip from Stirling and walked around town. It was founded in 1413 (the oldest university in Scotland and 3rd oldest in the English-speaking world). Prince William and Kate Middleton met here. The architecture of the buildings were beautiful.

The university's stunning campus is a walk through history, with ancient stone building set against the backdrop of North sea.

Come and learn here. St andrews is a historical place with lot of attractions. Nice golf field, good hotels, many students and clean city. A nice beach is right there.
Hadi H — Google review
The University of St. Andrews is one of the most beautiful universities and campuses to visit and explore. It is the third oldest university in the English speaking world and the oldest university in Scotland, founded in 1413. Its motto is …”For Ever to be the BEST!” And is it ever! St. Andrews is made up of a variety of different institutions and three colleges. The University of St. Andrews has had several notable attendees including, the Prince and Princess of Wales. The Prince of Wales, Prince William was taught Geology by my next door neighbour in Fife. The town really let Prince William be… and town members did not encourage the paparazzi! The town surrounding the campus has many shops, restaurants, a quaint movie theatre, a Tescos, fish and chippie shops along with some of the best Indian food I’ve ever had. The university is situated next to the 🥶 North Sea and also next to the Royal and Ancient where GOLF ⛳️ was invented. A little over 10,500 students attend the university and if you’re planning on attending and are accepted, tuition can be in the upwards of £25,000 for overseas students, not including room/boarding. By today’s rates, that’s only $28,762 per semester if you’re from the USA. Not that bad if you think about the expensive tuition in the USA. If you live in Scotland and are Scotland based, you may be able to go to the university for free. Imagine that? I would visit the university and walk on the campus and explore the rich history. Check out the oldest living tree on campus. Afterwards, go to Forgan’s or Balgove Larder - a few of my personal favourites - for tea. Then, walk on St. Andrew’s beach and play the Chariots of Fire on your phone. Don’t take my word for it, visit yourself.

Golf course
The Old Course in St Andrews is a legendary 18-hole links that holds the distinction of being the oldest golf course in the world, with its origins dating back to the early 15th century. This iconic course has witnessed over 600 years of golfing history and continues to attract visitors and members alike. Notable landmarks within the course include the Swilcan Bridge and Hell Bunker.
This is the greatest golf course in the world. Not because of its toughness but because you are walking on golf hollow ground. It is a lot more challenging than you expect. Pot bunkers everywhere. Huge greens that are so big it makes it hard to score. I have a 53 and a 40-yard. Because you can’t use your wedge, it makes it difficult. The notorious wind truly is a factor. It’s also crazy because cars are crossing the course and pedestrians walking crisscross across the golf course. All in all, this is a dream to play and a bucket list course. It was even better because we had Lou and Keith as caddies. I can’t recommend this course highly enough. The pictures don’t do it justice. Walking the last hole was pretty emotional.

The home of golf!! Amazing golf course!! You wouldn’t think that this course has all the rolling hills from seeing it on tv but boy oh boy, what’s a tremendous golfing experience.

Really awesome to visit the home of golf. They open up the old course on Sunday and you’re able to walk it freely. So wonderful to see that element of community from the golf club. Beautiful place.

We got lucky and had a beautiful day to go check out St Andrews and the old course. Fantastic for golfers, and a beautiful spot even for those who don't golf

Every emotions were triggered when i saw the 18th hole and the 17th road hole. Was just epic. Wonderful restaurant just above the museum. Food prices were reasonable and the people at and around the old course were friendly speaking the universal language of golf. Must make a trip at least once in your life time.

We were lucky enough to play the course at the end of the year. It was blowing a gale.. 50mph plus but we weren't going to allow that to spoil our fun. We had a great match. The caddies were superb, and helped a lot. Even if they did want to walk in after 9.. due to the wind. We actually scored pretty well and the match finished on the 17th… It was nearly dark on the approach to 17. Caddie said aim over there, so i did. I hit it well but could not see where it had ended up… when i got to the green the ball was about 8ft away… couldn't believe it. Holed the putt and won. If anyone knows the 17th this is not easily done… So inspiring to play 18 afterwards. The course was magical and will never be forgotten. If you can play it then do so. Its not the best layout or condition compared to some in Scotland but the history and satisfaction playing it is fantastic. We ate in Russacks afterwards. Losers bought dinner. Steak was amazing.

The OC is everything you expect it to be , charming, captivating, mesmerising, iconic, beautiful condition a bucket list for every golfer on the planet. Embrace the full 18 there’s much more to it than the 1,17&18 there are extra special indeed.

The Swilcan Bridge is a historic stone structure located on the grounds of the renowned St Andrews golf course. It crosses a small waterway between the first and eighteenth fairways on the Old Course, making it an iconic landmark in St Andrews. Believed to have been built over 700 years ago in a Roman Arch style, its original purpose was to assist shepherds in guiding livestock across the burn.
A small but globally famous stone bridge situated on the world's oldest golf course. The bridge is only 30 feet long and its original purpose is debated, but whatever the reason for its construction, it continues to provide a crossing over the Swilcan Burn, and is much loved by golfers from around the world. The grand buildings surrounding the course and the distant hills on the horizon provide great backdrops to this photogenic landmark. Whether or not you're a fan of golf, the bridge is worth a look as an icon of St Andrews, which is accessible to the public when the game isn't being played.
Andrew T — Google review
How could anyone not give this bridge five stars? One of the most famous places in golf, you can go right up to it. On Sundays you can even walk the course since it’s closed. Very few other places have such magnificent public access to one of the great golf courses of the world. It’s a pilgrimage, even for people like me who don’t play much anymore.
David S — Google review
I'm not a golfer or even remotely keen on golf, but our guest was. The course is lovely, right next to the beach and within stroke-distance (see what I did there? 😉) of the Golf Museum, Aquarium, Monument, Marker Street, beach, tidal pools, etc. The bridge is easily accessed, but be sure to WAIT for the players to complete their time on that hole, and cross the bridge BEFORE taking your snaps. And please ... don't be an InstaTwat and hog all the time posing. Even as a non-enthusiast, I was happy to have seen it.

A modern theatre that nonetheless exudes warmth and charm. Though sleek and glassy, it also has wooden panels filled with warm tones that makes sitting here feel quite intimate. If you have an interest in local theater, this is the place to go. Even if you do not, you should go here anyway because it echoes with life and conviviality, with the creativity of people sharing ideas and thoughts. It feels especially cosy at Christmastime.

Free wifi is available in both the upstairs “study lounge” and the downstairs community lounge as well. St Andrews Museum, located in a picturesque Victorian mansion within Kilnburn Park, offers an immersive journey through the history and heritage of St. Andrews. The museum presents a diverse range of temporary exhibitions that delve into the town's medieval origins up to its present-day status as a vibrant university center and renowned golf destination. Families can enjoy engaging activities such as talks, concerts, and children's workshops while exploring the museum's intriguing collections.
What a wonderful museum! It is small and chock full of the history of St Andrews. It’s so worth a visit to this charming place that is free and they have a cafe for a spot of tea or cuppa and a sweetie. I liked that I could learn much about the community in just about an hour’s time. I discovered Fife was a major manufacturer of linoleum. Who knew? And there is much to it, with many creations being pieces of art (I included a few pictures). I’ll never look at linoleum the same way. There’s also a lovely labyrinth to walk and lawn bowling club around the corner.

Free and had clean toilets ! 2mins walk from castle, which they were asking £11 for adults ? We didn't bother, see the cathedral 2mins on its free ! The shop was selling a NASA moon puzzle which i advise....Do not buy ! As the moon picture... isn't a true image of the moon ! Sickens me they removed the most import part of the map ! How are children ever going to learn if we keep hiding the truth ? Lost a star for this !

Nice small little museum. There is two floors and an outdoor area upstairs but a lot more information and learning downstairs. There is stuff you can interact with also. Museum is free but definitely worth checking out. There is a shop to help support them and donation stand as like I said it’s free. Had never been in but was nice to learn some knowledge about the area from “back in the day” Staff here are also very friendly.
Gareth M — Google review
I have to give this place credit for a wonderful and comprehensive collection of old photographs. The detail the history of the town in the last 150 years, from the early resort goers who help revitalise the town from its ruined state, to the last train to leave the town in the late 1960s. Streams of thoughtfully dressed people wander through the streets of a town that in its architecture has not changed much from those early days. Still, the museum outside those photos is rather mediocre and not as impressive as I had thought it would be. If you're looking for a great museum in St Andrews, I recommend the golf museum and the St Andrews Wardslaw museum first. Admittedly, the art gallery was under renovation when I came here, so I can't offer a full review, but I expected more. Even the building itself seems a little smaller and less grand than I expected, despite its elaborately beautiful and architecturally elegant exterior. PS Visit the gardens before you leave. Lush and vivacious, they are a highlight of the museum.
Joshua F — Google review
I visited with my kids for the 'Crafted Selves Relaxed Talk and Tour', which gave some background/personal information on the artists and a little bit about their styles of work. The museum itself is very well laid out and easy to navigate and also had quite a few interesting items on display. It has a small sitting area where tea/coffee and biscuits (quite a large and varied selection of biscuits) are available for a donation. I unfortunately did not have cash with me, but I was able to leave a donation by card payment. It has some items available for purchase in the 'shop' and I did purchase a very nice book about 'Scottish Colourist' It doesn't take very long to go around the museum and view the art exhibition but the lovely lady working there gave us a map and showed some other places we could visit that were nearby. Would definitely recommend visiting.

Small but very manageable if you are on a time budget, good overview of life and history of St. Andrews. Modern and ancient artefacts and I’m sure there is so much more than can be displayed at any one time. Very welcoming cafe. Free entry and very engaged staff.

St Salvator's Chapel, a large chapel dating back to around 1450, is located at the University of St. Andrews and showcases late-Gothic architectural design. The chapel stands out amidst the mix of historic and contemporary buildings in the area. It is described as a rare and beautiful example of late Gothic architecture, serving as the focal point of life in Scotland's oldest university. Visitors can admire its ornate beauty while exploring the heart of St. Andrews.
Fine gothic building with a somber atmosphere. Usually busy and closed because of weddings and events. But sometimes you can get lucky and enjoy a quiet private moment in this beautiful setting.

East Sands beach, situated on the south side of the old harbor in St Andrews, offers a range of water sports such as surfing and sailing. It is also a popular spot for pre-wedding photoshoots and for capturing stunning sunsets. The beach is part of the renowned Fife Coastal Path, with a picturesque route leading towards Kingsbarns.
Expansive sandy beach in a fantastic location just a few minutes walk from the castle and cathedral ruins and harbour. The beach offers great views of rugged coastline to the east and distant hills across the sea to the northwest. It's also dog friendly and a good place for a walk. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during peak season when it is a popular watersports location. At the time of my visit on a January evening I had it completely to myself, a very peaceful spot to finish a great visit to St Andrews. There's free roadside parking a couple of minutes walk away near the harbour, no problem finding a space in winter but I'd imagine summer would be a different story.

A mesmerising beach extending far into the waters. My only complaint about this little haven is that it often becomes too crowded, particularly during the summer months. Come to the beach early in the morning or late at night. Hopefully, at night, the clouds will dissipate, and you will have a clear view of the moon and the stars. Swim in the water if you wish in the summer, but do be reminded that it is still quite cold. The tempestuous Scottish weather rarely relents. I highly recommend coming here at low tide, and walking all the way from the coastline to the water's edge. Look back, and you will hardly be able to see the buildings you left behind.

If you love golf then this is as close to mecca as you can get. As i usually work at or near the clubhouse, i am not that thrilled to be there, as can perhpas be understood. My apathy compares favourably with the unbridled enthusiasm of numerous daily guests from all walks of life, many playing golf on one of the 7 local courses, some taking walking tours, some doing a bit of shopping at the shop and others popping in for lunch, coffee or anything in between. It is almost always windy and there is a world famous sandy beach stretching for miles a few metres away. You can enjoy a gorgeous view of the town, or if you are mad pop into the North Sea for a dook, there's a sauna, a windsurfing and landyachting business, and plenty of parking...just dont stay overnight if you are in a motorhome.

The St Andrews Links Golf Academy is a top-notch practice facility that offers a fantastic experience for golf enthusiasts. The instructors are professional, knowledgeable, and passionate about golf, while the staff is welcoming and helpful. The academy features great short game areas, excellent putting greens all year round, and a simplified version of Trackman to track your progress. Additionally, some bays are equipped with heaters and the establishment adheres to all current Covid guidelines.
My husband signed both of us up for the three day session at The Academy. He is a very experienced golfer who’s waited a lifetime to golf at St. Andrews, so it seemed to him like the right thing to do to do the academy. I on the other hand am a brand new golfer and was overwhelmingly intimidated by going, but I wanted to at least try. We were greeted by Rachel who had helped us set everything up. We were moved into a room where we met the 8 other golfers who would be fellow students, as well as Finten Bonner and Scott Wilson, our instructors. Once we went over the breakdown of the three days, we were taken, with our clubs, to the practice area where we would spend 3 hours a day for the next 3 days working on our form, swing and distance improvement, putting, chipping, getting out of bunkers and handling varied lies. I was so impressed with how the instructors were able to quickly figure out opportunities for improvement in each golfer and spend ample time to ensure each golfer got the attention they needed. And as the only female and by far the least experienced golfer out there, I was never intimidated…quite the opposite…at the end of the lessons I felt like I had great new tools to help me improve and my confidence to go out and golf is dramatically increased! After the third day’s lesson, we went as a group and golfed the Eden course with the instructors providing feedback and guidance. It was a great way to apply what we’d learned and to wrap up the academy. I would recommend this course to anyone at any skill level. The instructors, the facilities and the value for your money - oh, with The Old Course as your backdrop - is fantastic!

Well worth a visit, if you are interested in St Andrew’s University. It has a detailed history of the the university as well as many other interesting exhibits. I learned a lot about the UK illegal migration which made me rethink and evaluate my view. They also had a presentation on the poison substances in old books which were covered in green cloth and how they were developing instruments to detect these poison so other libraries without the resources could find these books. I found this fascinating.

Wonderful atmospheric tour. Our tour guide was very informative. Learnt loads of history of St Andrews. A few things/places that were pointed out as the tour progressed were significant, and I would have completely missed. In fact I wouldn't have glanced twice at if I was walking around St Andrews by myself. Totally recommend to anyone who loves history and has an open mind.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, this tour is well worth your time. A fascinating insight in to the history of St Andrews, Richard knows his stuff and having researched the area for decades, can provide detailed information on just about any area! We booked the 21:00 tour and walked all over the town, with buildings being pointed out for quirks, their history, and of course the ghosts associated with them. It was an hour an a half and I wish it was ten times longer! He is so knowledgable, time spent with him is a privilege, thoroughly enjoyed this and I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about the St Andrews darker side and history.

We loved this tour. We went in February and we had a great time. Richard was a fabulous guide and I bought one of his books at Waterstones the following afternoon. Fascinating tour and a great way to learn the town's history.

Amazing place with amazing people, totally free, but you can do donations 🩷 I absolutely love the chemist shop and garden. Definitely worth to step in and have a look .
Marta S — Google review
A hidden gem. Quirky with interesting interiors of local shops- chemist, blacksmith etc. The garden is a haven of peace and tranquility. Benches to sit and listen to the happy buzzy bees. Friendly staff, old building, narrow old staircase access to first floor
Gayle P — Google review
Small places on the main Street. Brilliant though. Go in the summer so you can enjoy the multi area garden. It's small inside but gardens area is great. Plus the place is free to get in and the helpers inside are very helpful. Great free local place. Enjoyed it.

A lovely little museum in an historic building. You're greeted by very nice friendly staff. Has a handy little shop. Definitely worth going through to the beautiful garden. Lots of interesting historic artefacts.

Little gem. Very informative and friendly for children. Very beautiful garden.

Learned a lot in this small but amazing museum. There are heritages of dental sciences, medicine, natures and architecture. The staff here speaks a lot to make you understand the history of this place well.
WEN-HUI C — Google review
The best place with just wonderful people, was speaking to several of the volunteers, Simon sent us to talk to a researcher. Brin and I had the most lovely talk about our lives and how we got to where we stood in the peaceful gardens. You have got to go here, everything inside the doors is magical, right from the old bell when you first walk in. It's a place that you can touch, and then it touches you right back...

Nestled in the historic town of St Andrews, the Martyrs' Monument stands as a poignant tribute to four men executed during the tumultuous 16th Century Scottish Reformation. This striking landmark not only symbolizes religious freedom and bravery but also enriches the narrative of St Andrews’ significant role in this pivotal period.
The strategically placed obelisk overlooks the famous Old Course, and for most tourists represents an ideal photo-stop. However its true purpose is to honour the memory of Scottish Martyrs burnt alive in Saint Andrews around 500 years ago for advancing our modern rights to free speech in the face of religious intolerance and blasphemy laws. If you visit the monument, remember the debt you owe to George Wishart, Patrick Hamilton and others like him.

We passed by as we were walking back towards the bus stop. I don't think there's a bad view in all of St. Andrews.

St Andrews is a beautiful place. Close to the Monument is the beach with wide sands, ideal for dog walkers, and the Golf Museum

Martyrs' Monument in St Andrews, is located nearby to West Sands Beach, close to the Bandstand. It is there to commemorate protestant martyrs. Also lovely view of West Sands Beach from that spot.
Amy B — Google review
Interesting monument to 4 men burnt at the stake for their religious views. The monument was erected in 1842-43 by William Nixon. Standing on the Scores in an area of scenic views
Leslie M — Google review
Very scenic view... The monument makes you think about others, their beliefs and the respect we should have for each other. The story behind it is dark and cruel like a time about which the monument talks; worth remembering and learning a lesson from it.

good place to rest. There are several benches.

Blackfriars Chapel is a historic site in St Andrews, Scotland, and the remains of a Dominican friary from the Middle Ages. The chapel was part of the former Dominican friary of St Mary and was constructed in the 1520s but destroyed about 30 years later during the Scottish Reformation. Today, it stands as a portal to the past, offering visitors a glimpse into Scotland's history.
Blackfriars Chapel is a rare remnant of the many Dominican friaries built across Scotland during the Middle Ages. Blackfriars Chapel was built in the 1520s as an addition to the church of the Dominican Friars, built about 10 years earlier. It didn’t last long, though – in 1559, Protestant reformers ‘violently expelled’ the friars ‘from their destroyed place’. Soon this chapel was all that remained of the friary. It now stands on a busy street in St Andrews.
Karin S — Google review
Ruin of a small chapel and the only surviving part of a Dominican friary. Built in the early 16th century, the chapel had stood for less than 40 years when the friary was destroyed in the Protestant reformation, an event which saw the friars expelled from their church. The chapel is situated in a small green space alongside a busy shopping street, a somewhat unusual setting for such a structure. While it's not a peaceful spot, an information board has been provided outlining the chapel's history, and the little flower planter is a nice touch. Not something to travel a distance for on its own, but free to see and worth a quick look if you're visiting St Andrews.
Andrew T — Google review
Beautiful structure, but kind of an odd spot overall. I definitely thought there would be more to it, but it is what it is. :) It sits in amongst a busy street with little shops, and just seems to collect litter in and around it. A funny one to see after seeing many well kept spots.
Lindsey R — Google review
Pretty little landmark right in the middle of St Andrews. There’s just a tiny little information plaque next to it, not too much info on there, so you won’t spend more than a couple of minutes looking at it. The back is barred off so you can’t enter.
Penny E — Google review
Blackfriars Chapel is a small landmark in the middle of St Andrews. There is only a tiny information board next to it. The last remnant of this small chapel, which belonged to a Dominican monastery, stands practically in the middle of St Andrews. It was destroyed during the dramatic clashes between Protestants and Catholics in the second half of the 16th century.
Alex S — Google review
It's very pretty and right in the middle of town, easy to miss if you're not paying attention. I would be nice if they had a little more information available at it.
Alejandra G — Google review
There is not much to it but it is very nice, you would just spend 5 or 10 minutes here.
Roxanne C — Google review
That’s a very very interesting piece of history:)
