Saint Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod, an 11th-century church with 5 domes, is a treasure trove of historic frescoes, icons, mosaics, and graffiti. The external murals feature images of Saints Constantine and Helena on the porch while fragments of three-meter images of prophets provide insight into past frescoes. The cathedral also houses two altar icons from the 11th century and the miraculous icon 'The Sign,' painted in 1170.
One of the most oldest Cathedral in Russia. It is not that big but beautiful. Inside the Cathedral, We can feel Old atmosphere. Orthodox is quite interesting comparing with other Protestant Church or Catholic Church. Anyway it was beautiful Church. Stongly recommend to go here. Entrance is surely free.

Save your precious time and money, almost 80% things are closed due to construction work. I still decided to go, really beautiful place. Can easily reach via Bus No. 7 (use 2GIS app for bus routes and timings).

This is a definite must go if you are in the town of Veliky Novgorod. This outdoor museum provides a pretty good flavour of how Russian houses and buildings in the countryside used to look like in the past. It was also a very pleasant surprise to find out that we could enter the buildings and poke around at the various recreated scenes. Only giving it a 4 stars because two thirds of the museum was closed for restoration when I visited

Yaroslav’s Court is a historical architectural complex located on the Trade Side of Veliky Novgorod, by the Volkhov River. It was once a bustling medieval marketplace surrounded by a log stockade, resembling fortresses. The area housed churches, two-storied houses for merchants, trade storage facilities, and various amenities like a mill, brewery, banja (sauna), and hospital. Notable structures within the complex include the St.
Interesting History. Novgorod was once a big commercial spot. This city was one of Hanseatic alliance city, with London and Stokholm. Properous city. But Ivan the terrible trampled this city, because it is dangerous to Moscow country and did not obey to his opinion. According to explanation this territory was for selling products, like market.

(Translated by Google) The right bank of the Volkhov River is called the Trade Side or Yaroslav's Dvorishche. Here was an ancient trading center, the economic center of Novgorod and the residence of Prince Yaroslav the Wise. This is a historical architectural complex, an archaeological zone. The Gostiny Dvor Arcade monument has been put in order; it is better to photograph it from the Gorbaty Bridge. Come in the morning, when the sun is just rising and there are very few tourists around. You won't regret it. The view from the bridge in the early pre-dawn hour is amazing, both on the Trade Side and on the Kremlin. The Monastery of the Tithes, a remarkable historical site in Novgorod, invites visitors to explore its rich architectural heritage. This stunning white stone bell tower marks the entrance to what was once a thriving convent, believed to have been founded around 998 AD. The monastery's history is intertwined with significant events, including the siege by Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky in 1170. Nearby attractions include the majestic Cathedral of St. Nicholas and the Church of the Nativity at St.
Beautiful remainings of the old monastery, inside you can see more ruins of the cathedral that used to be there and also you can find a museum of the monastery and a ceramic interactive museum.

In the courtyard are the ruins of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (1397) with a unique place of memory of the cathedral. Very interesting, quiet, calm, beautiful. There is a certain tinge of unreality. A must visit. A good opportunity to think about life, death and the frailty of this world. (Original) Десятянный монастырь. Novgorod State Museum-Reserve, located within the kremlin walls, is a must-see destination offering three comprehensive exhibitions. The museum houses an extensive collection of Russian icons dating from the 11th to the 19th centuries, showcasing the progression of skills and techniques over time. Additionally, visitors can explore artifacts such as birch bark manuscripts, handicrafts, and military equipment from ancient times to the end of the 17th century.
There is No English At All. Everything is Russian. But seeing the pictures, I can feel what they want to say. Novgorod was once Hanseatic hub in Moscow, and it was described as 'Window to Europe' at that time.(I am exchange student of Saint-Petersburg, and it was quite interesting to hear that). On the first floor, there are some ruins, things that are historical. We can see how they lived, what was the territory, and how they prospered. And there are ruins that say they were Hanseatic hub. Interesting. On the 2nd floor, we can see Icon(Икон). According to explanation, because Novgorod was not conquered by Mongolian invasion, there are lots of pieces made in since 11th century(?). And there is also some pieces that portrayed World War 2. For student, it is 180rubs on the board explanation. But they demaned 120rubs to me. I don't know why but maybe it was holiday(?)...

(Translated by Google) A very interesting museum. On the second floor there is a large exhibition of icons. But on weekdays (or I was just lucky) when there are very few visitors, the caretakers simply follow as much as possible and monitor every movement. I understand that this is their job, but I felt watched all the time (following me from room to room) and it’s annoying. There are cameras in all the halls and it’s normal to just sit quietly on your chair and keep an eye on visitors, but don’t jump up and watch every step and follow. Although she behaved very quietly and culturedly (she practically did not take photographs).

Saint Nicholas Cathedral in Novgorod, Russia, is a remarkable example of medieval Russian architecture. Built between 1113 and 1136, it stands as one of the city's oldest surviving structures. The cathedral showcases a blend of Byzantine and local architectural styles, featuring imposing walls and graceful domes. Inside, visitors can admire the opulent decorations including 12th-century frescoes and a carved baroque iconostasis.
The origin of Russian Democracy. According to explanation, Novgorod people gathered alongside of the Nicholas Cathedral wall and discussed things. People who have the highest voice won the discuss. They discussed policy and had had the right to elect Prince, Politicians, etc. They had a right to impeach, and Polticians had to 'serve' for the people. Interesting stories comparing with current Russian Politic. Russians are really proud of this history and they believe 'Coming together', 'Share and discuss idea', and even Communisitic idea came from this history. Interesting.

It is necessary to preserve the memory of the great feat of the Russian people! This place is definitely worth including in a walking route around the city. At the foot of the monument there is a beautiful view of the Grebnoy Canal and the Volkhov River. During the winter visit, it was observed that the Hanseatic fountain lacked water, yet it remains a significant historical site showcasing Novgorod's past fame and prosperity. Comparable to London and Stockholm as a Hanseatic hub, this location holds a captivating history. A monument also stands nearby to commemorate the achievements of the Hanseatic League. It is intriguing, though not remarkably unique. However, one ponders how Russia's economy faces challenges despite its once prosperous heritage.
When I went there, it was winter so it has no water. But anyway it is historical spot to celebrate and demonstrate that Novgorod was once really famous and prosperous country in Russia. It was Hanseatic hub like London and Stockholm. Nice and interesting history. There is also a monument to celebrate the Hanseatic things. I wonder although Russia once has this prosperous history, but now why they have some problems in their countries economy. Sad stories.

The park is adjacent to the Novgorodsky Detinets fortress and offers a tranquil escape with its historical significance. (Translated by Google) The museum's collection of paintings exceeded expectations, despite preliminary acquaintance with various reviews and descriptions. However, there are not so many people who want to see the paintings of Aivazovsky, Kuindzhi, Makovsky, Polenov, Roerich, Serov and other world-famous artists (the cost is ridiculous). Sadly... The only thing that causes inconvenience when viewing the exhibition is "light". Money should be allocated for special lighting, because it, as it is, only interferes with comfortable viewing - the light is reflected on the paintings (or glass), glare. You want to see the painting from different distances, from different angles, but the lighting allows - only from one, and you still need to look for it. I definitely recommend viewing, the feeling of touching the great and beautiful is guaranteed!

Construction during the reign of Prince Yaroslavl Vladimirovich. The frescoes were painted in 1199. But in October 1941, the temple was destroyed by more than half, and the painting of the temple was also destroyed. The restoration was carried out in 1947-1957. During the restoration, a tomb with the remains of the Moscow prince Afanasy Danilovich, a stream of Rurikovichs, brother of Ivan Ealita, buried in the temple in 1322, was discovered. The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin at the Marketplace is a remarkable historical site that houses rare 11-12 century paintings. Its survival over time is truly astonishing. One notable feature is the preserved, though inactive, altar. The interior and exhibition are both impressive, but there could have been more emphasis on showcasing the temple's original decoration during its construction. Additionally, an interesting aspect presented was an overview of the Kremlin.

(Translated by Google) A historical place, there are few places where you can see paintings from the 11th-12th centuries. It's amazing how it has survived to this day. It’s an extremely rare occasion when you can look into an altar, even if it’s not working. I really liked it inside, the exhibition is good. But I would have worked on the media panorama; we expected that they would show us what the decoration of the temple might have been like at the time of its construction. But they only showed an overview of the Kremlin, which was also interesting.

(Translated by Google) The memorial church from the era of princely civil strife, built in 1144, is dedicated to the Novgorodians who died at Zhdanaya Gora in an unsuccessful campaign against Suzdal. It has undergone major reconstructions several times. In 1458, it was completely dismantled and a new church was built on the previous foundation. It is difficult to imagine how dense the ancient buildings of Yaroslav's Court remained, including the remains of civil construction from the 13th to 15th centuries. All this was systematically destroyed under Soviet rule until the 1960s. The Assumption Church has lost its northern aisle and bell tower. I can’t imagine what’s inside, I’ve never seen it open.

(Translated by Google) Next to the Yuriev Monastery there is one amazing place - the Perynsky monastery. The history of the monastery is as follows. In pagan times, in 980, Prince Vladimir built a sanctuary of the pagan god Perun the Thunderer on a hill at the source of the Volkhov. But the baptism of Rus' happened, the pagan sanctuaries were destroyed, and Orthodox churches appeared in their place. In the 13th century, the wooden Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary built in the monastery was replaced with a stone one. A small, neat church with a silhouette stretched towards the sky instantly attracts your attention. This effect is achieved due to the fact that the walls of the main volume and the drum noticeably narrow at the top. Now there are 4 novices living in the monastery. On the territory of the monastery there is a Worship Cross, from which a beautiful view of the Volkhov River opens. The Perun Grove itself retains the energy of the pagan past of this place. The feeling of a certain energy center will accompany you as you walk around the monastery. This can be felt especially clearly if you walk to the Nightingale Grove, where you can be alone with a clot of energy that is unlikely to leave this sacred place. Take a walk to the beach located outside the monastery gates, near the parking lot. If you are lucky and there are no tourist groups nearby, which are often brought to this place, standing at the edge of the water, a force will rise up to meet you that cannot be physically noticed, but which will cover you from head to toe and remove everything unnecessary. This is worth coming here for.

We took a walk around the monastery. We walked along the path where there are information signs. It smells wonderful of pine forest and lifts your spirits. We looked at the view of the Volkhov from the hill. We saw new trees and young pines near the old ones. A well that is being restored after the USSR and a pre-Mongol church. In general, you won't regret it if you visit this place in sunny weather.

(Translated by Google) The monastery is simply amazing - a quiet, holy place very close to the Yuriev Monastery and Vitoslavlitsy, on the shore of the lake. In addition, the monastery is active, a very small community lives its unnoticed, but very correct and holy life there. They are allowed inside the temple and briefly told about its history. Visiting time is half an hour maximum, but it's worth it.

Five of us can barely get in. It doesn't shine with either architecture or interior decoration. The Christian cross with a crescent crowning the dome evokes thought. Beautiful view from the hill of the Volkhov River. The place is prayed for, blissful. If you are lucky, the priest will meet you, talk to you, and tell you the history of the monastery. The nature is beautiful, untouched, it’s nice to walk to the bank of the Volkhov River and admire the views. Women are advised to wear hats.
