Seafood market
Market
Karato Fish Market is a bustling hub with numerous vendors offering sashimi, sushi, and other prepared foods. What sets it apart from other fish markets in Japan is its abundance of fugu, also known as pufferfish. The market is heavily regulated for the preparation of fugu, requiring chefs to undergo extensive training before serving it. Located along Route 9, visitors can explore a wide variety of seafood at the market, including whale meat in nearby restaurants.
Nice place to opt for sashimi and other seafood meal. All freshly prepared. Very busy place and prices are reasonable i guess. After you bought your food, benches are available outside the fish market for you to.sit and enjoy your seafood meal. There are shops and convenience store nearby too. Ice cream vendors are available too.

An unexpected lunch date to this fish market. If you love sushi, this is a place to go. So many stalls offering fresh sushi of different types. Some offer treys to let you pick and choose, while other do it for you and some specialize in a specific fish. We waited in one queue for about 10 minutes or so for the tuna specials. Mmmmm sooooo good! So hard to decide and it’s all in your face…LOVE IT! And if you’re worried that this market has the “fishy smell” don’t even. I was fine being in there and didn’t have that stink that many other markets in other Asian countries have. This is a more local touristy spot, which is great because you don’t have those big city crowds. I’d go back if I can! YUM!🍣🍱🐟🐠🍤🐡🎏

If you’re visiting Shimonoseki, Karato Market is definitely a must-see spot.
Fresh and delicious sushi is waiting for you inside. For those arriving by ferry, you can easily hop on a bus or taxi (or even walk, since it’s not too far). But if you’re driving, be prepared—parking can be a bit of a hassle, especially on sunny days when the wait time tends to get long. Most people enjoy their food in the open area right next to the market, but recently they’ve opened a dining space on the second floor. There’s a small fee (I believe it was about 300 yen per person), but on a hot day with nowhere to sit, it’s a very welcome option. Grab some tasty sushi, relax, and take in the view of the peaceful blue sea—you’ll really feel the charm of Shimonoseki!

Karato Fish Market in Shimonoseki is a lively waterfront market famous for super-fresh seafood, especially blowfish (fugu). On weekends and holidays, stalls sell sushi, sashimi, and seafood bowls at affordable prices, making it popular with both locals and visitors. You can buy your food, then enjoy it outside while overlooking the Kanmon Strait. It’s a great spot to taste fresh Japanese seafood in a casual atmosphere.

🐟 Karato Fish Market (Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi) Review Karato Fish Market is one of the liveliest and most enjoyable seafood markets in western Japan. Located right by the sea in Shimonoseki, it offers visitors a vibrant atmosphere filled with the sights, sounds, and smells of fresh seafood. Every morning, local fishermen and vendors display an incredible variety of freshly caught fish and shellfish. The highlight for most visitors is the weekend sushi market, where dozens of stalls sell beautifully prepared sushi, sashimi, and seafood rice bowls at very reasonable prices. You can walk along the pier with a tray of fresh sushi while enjoying the sea breeze and view of the Kanmon Strait — a truly local experience. The market staff are friendly and energetic, happy to explain the different types of fish and preparation styles. There are also souvenir shops and small restaurants nearby where you can try blowfish (fugu), the specialty of Shimonoseki. The area around the market is clean, lively, and easy to explore. It’s best to visit in the morning (around 8–10 a.m.) when the selection is at its peak. Overall, Karato Fish Market is a must-visit for seafood lovers — a place where you can enjoy delicious, affordable sushi, learn about Japan’s fishing culture, and feel the authentic spirit of a coastal city.

If your looking for a Family tour place, you got the right place. Drink and eat 1-2dollar sushi! You can buy cold sake at the sake shop in the right corner.eat the sushi at the bench out side. Abalone sashimi is Great too.

If you’re visiting Mojiko, take the ferry across to Shimonoseki on Honshu, where you’ll find the famous Karato Fish Market—a popular spot among tourists. The market is especially known for selling sushi and is only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. You can buy sushi inside and then enjoy it outside at the many seating areas while taking in the ocean view. The market’s signature specialty is fugu (pufferfish), served as both sushi and sashimi. In fact, the pufferfish is even the symbol of the market. The sushi here is quite affordable, with plenty of vendors to choose from. The taste is pretty good too—not bad at all. The fugu, in particular, has a unique texture: it leaves a slight numbness on your tongue, but it’s delicious.
Busher P — Google review
We went crazy in this market. Great fresh sushi and sashimi with great value. This market is famous for puffer fish and whale. My first experience with whale sushi, it was wild. 22 pieces of sushi with toro, hamachi, eel, sardine, whale with a place of toro and a puffer fish sashimi for below ¥10,000. You can sit and eat by the sea.

Kamon Wharf is a charming seaside shopping center located next to Karato Market. It features 19 restaurants that offer delicious meals made with fresh seafood from the market. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Kanmon Strait and the city of Moji from the wooden deck. The area is clean and well-maintained, with opportunities to spot large cargo ships passing through.
Really nice space with a huge variety of stores to eat and shop at. There's seating abound and the view looks great. The top floor is all businesses so you aren't missing anything by not going to it. Every part of this center meant for guests is fully accessible.

A lot of dinner sushi stalls, very busy even during the weekdays. Check out all the stalls to see different vendors, they even have whale sushi but can’t be filmed. Lots of eating space outside the market and they even have a regular stores in the front.

Plenty selections of souvenirs. You can visit after Karato fish market. Kamin Wharf also got restrooms and several light meal/snack/coffee/tea to visit. I personally recommend Takada coffee for its coffee, tea, and homemade cake.

A trip to Mojiko then to the Karato Fish Market landed us at the Kamon Wharf. It is a wide area connecting must- see spots. There is a shopping mall with restaurants on the wharf. This is also where the fish market is located which is packed on weekends because of the varied sushi selection they sell. A marine world- Kaikyokan and an amusement park is also here. Strolling around this place is a nice daytrip from Hakata if weather is good.

Very nice area with lots of different shops most selling fugu and other types of seafood. Many of the different shops were quite friendly and spoke a little English or at least enough to get by. Most of what we found was premade and packaged but we did end up deciding to try a couple things including fugu which was good! There was plenty of space outside to find a spot to eat and for the kids to run out a little bit of energy before we continued on to the aquarium.

Nice view over Kanmon Straits. We were lucky to spot a huge cargo ship passing through. The pedestrian area was neat and clean. Many groups of dancers were taking turns to show off their colorful and vibrant programs when we visited. There were several life-sized cardboard cutouts featuring the famous swordsmen, Sasaki Kojiro and Miyamoto Musashi, for tourists photos.

Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Nestled along the scenic Kanmon Straits, Akama Jingu is a captivating Shinto shrine that pays homage to Emperor Antoku, a child emperor whose life was tragically cut short during the Battle of Dan-no-ura. The shrine's striking vermilion gate and elegant architecture create an inviting atmosphere for visitors.
This Shrine is another place to visit when go to Shimonoseki. It is a walkable distance from the Karato Fish Market. It is not the common design of most Japanese shrines. It has a unique look. Go up all the way to the back of the shrine to see a row of red torii gates. We were not able to go all the way up but it has a good view of the Kanmon area. It is also in this shrine where you can find a cute fugu mail box.

Akama Jingu is a beautiful shrine is located on the stunning Kanmon Straits. The shrine is dedicated to the child emperor Antoku and other warriors who fell during the battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185. The location also provides many other historical locations to explore near by and offers beautiful water front views, and restaurants.

Not many people seem to know the true charm of Akama at night. It may not shine as brightly as shrines in bigger cities, but here in Shimonoseki, there's a quiet, subtle beauty that lingers like a faint scent on the breeze. Under the dark sky, it glows with a deep red hue—soft, yet captivating. There’s no need for noise or lights. Just the sound of the sea breeze brushing past, and the stillness that gently wraps around you. As I strolled through the night, passing by this small yet majestic shrine, I found myself completely at peace— a rare moment to quietly walk, breathe, and simply think. I hope you, too, get to experience that kind of night.

A red-white shrine located close to the sea. The architecture is quite unique. The red & white contrasting color makes a pale pink sakura flower more beautiful. The sea view from the shrine is also stunning.
Sarasate E — Google review
I visited the jingu at around 1pm, 8 May 2025. There were only a few visitors in the jingu, but there were some construction projects ongoing at that time. The complex is free to enter, and the buildings are brightly coloured in a traditional red hue. There is information about the history of the jingu, its relationship with Antoku Tenno and Hoichi the Earless.

Came to this jinja after a short ferry ride from the Kyushu/Mojikou Port side to the Honshu/Yamaguchi side of the beautiful Kanmon Straits. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from the Karato ferry landing dock. Beautiful red and white structures and s pretty cute of the Kanmonkyo Bridge as you head back towards the street. No fee to enter our to look around, but a gift shop awaits to separate you and your funds. We went on a weekday during the late morning/early afternoon. A nice stop if you are in the area. Recommended!

Kaikyokan Aquarium, located in Shimonoseki, is a top attraction offering a fascinating look into the diverse marine life of the Kanmon Straits and beyond. With over 500 species of fish, including more than 100 types of pufferfish from around the world, visitors can explore vibrant tropical fish, mesmerizing jellyfish, and formidable sharks. The aquarium also features dolphin shows and a tunnel tank with penguins.
If you want to beat the heat and have fun while doing it, this is the perfect place, especially if you have kids! Our family spent the entire day here and around the wharf where the aquarium is located. An aquarium ticket lasts a whole day with the QR code. We were able to go in early in the morning, get some exhibits looked at, pop out for a fresh sushi lunch at the nearby Karato Fish Market, and then pop back into the aquarium to look some more or revisit previous exhibits. The dolphin shows were amazing, but definitely get there 30 min early for seats, and not every show is the same since they change the animals sometimes. Our favorite spot to rest was the sofa area in the corner of the Subantarctic Penguins on B1F. If you get there around 1:00 PM, you'll see angelic light streaming down the tank water which was stunningly beautiful when the penguins would swim and dive with a trail of bubbles behind! There are English translations for almost everything displayed, but no interpreters for whatever the caretakers are saying, but translating apps come in real handy for those times! Definitely recommend going more than once!
Austina S — Google review
It's another aquarium in Fukuoka, slightly small, but each has its strength and weaknesses against other aquarium. If like to see puffer fish I think this place had the most variety in Japan....😲 🐟 Great for fish lover. Not forgetting the std seal n dolphins act..👍
Dan C — Google review
Honestly at 2500 yen per person I didn’t think I’d have this much fun at this aquarium. They had a lot of exhibits and things to do but we just walked around the aquarium and enjoyed whatever they had to offer. Seeing the penguin is honestly my highlight. Definitely worth checking out if you have time after the fish market.
Nate_yeah84 — Google review
Small aquarium. A place I went to to escape the heat in very hot weather. Just a small aquarium. There are dolphin and seal shows a few times a day, and there is also a fish feeding show. I couldn't find a parking lot, so I parked in the parking lot across the street toward Karato Market and paid 800 yen. Parking fee is too expensive. There is a restaurant on the beach on the first floor where you can eat while looking at the aquarium. If you don't want to go into the aquarium, you can eat ice cream (500 yen) at this restaurant while looking at the aquarium.
Sona — Google review
One of the main attractions of this Aquarium is the number of puffer fish species they have. It's amazing. The dolphin show was good too.
Anisah — Google review
This was the surprise of our trip. It doesn’t seem to be big from the outside but looks can be deceiving, it has plenty to see for everyone. The dolphin show is the best I’ve ever seen in my life, really impressive. Prices are reasonable and both my teenage boys love it.

It is a must visit place if you are in simonoseki. It is a wonderful place for marine life lover. Main attraction is the penguin and the dolphins show that is held half an hour intervals. It is so beautiful to see. Also there are lots of types of fish also. Coral reef, jellyfish, sharks, sea lion, sun fish are few examples. There is blue whale skeleton also. Overall it is a awesome place to visit.

The Kyushu Railway History Museum in Moji, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan is a must-visit for train enthusiasts and history buffs alike. It showcases a fascinating collection of steam engines, sleeping carriages, and an early electric train designed in 1942. Visitors can explore retired vehicles and even take a tour inside some of the old carriages. The museum also features a functioning miniature train track, driving simulation, and informative displays that cater to Japan's avid train following.
A must visit place when you're in mojiko, here you'll learn the history of kyushu trains then and now. As a JR pass user I always wonder why there are old trains and newer trains and all these are explained here. Some interesting exhibits are old tickets, old trains that re removed, tracks types
Willie L — Google review
Good for children. Paid for ticket. The outdoor train simulator requires ¥300 for 2 people. The indoor train simulator is free but takes a long time for waiting, STRONGLY suggests reserving the indoor train simulator first.
鎧atHK — Google review
Kyushu railway history museum is a nice museum to understand more about trains, although not a very big one. You can try the train simulator and play with the model train for ¥100. You can even take the mini train ride to become a train captain for ¥300 but could be close due to bad weather.
Randy N — Google review
What amazed me is how much they can fit inside of the tiny park area. With the ¥300 yen ticket per adult you can check out historic trains from the last century parked in a row, a mini outdoor railway park, a diorama room showcasing all the N-gauge Shinkansen and other iconic express trains in Kyushu, a train simulator room, a library of real, ancient relics on train history in Kyushu and so on.

Great museum. Tons of artifacts. Great layout. Just wish things were translated into other languages for non-Japanese speakers. If they were, I would give this five stars.
Nicholas M — Google review
my sons love trains so when they know there is a train museum in kyushu, they keep nagging to go here. quite nice, not too big like the one we went on another city but they still like it. there are several old trains on the train garage with each of their history. we can also go inside the museum which shows many old things related to trains. kids also can play train simulator by paying 100 yen only, but you need to get ticket reservation because most children would like to play this.
Lenny L — Google review
Boring, nothing to see here but a few trains that you cannot enter. Bunch of Japanese kids running around and shouting. Perhaps this is what hell looks like. Everything that seems fun is paywar. Save the 300 yen for a menchi katsu instead
Ting H — Google review
As a train fan this is the place I’ve been owing to go while in Kitakyushu. Adjacent to Mojiko Station there are old train carriages outdoors on display with three of them you can enter inside, as the interior is well preserved. The main building hosts a small 1900 carriage and an exhibition room upstairs with railway artifacts, station and destination signs and old photos. Though not as big as the one near Omiya it is great that there is one.

Fukunoseki is a delightful dining establishment that offers delectable cuisine. It boasts of a pleasant ambiance where you can relish a satisfying meal with your companions. The menu includes unique delicacies such as sea urchin and puffer fish, both of which are exceptionally flavorsome. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh ingredients, ensuring the quality of every dish. Additionally, the prices are reasonable, making it an accessible choice for everyone.
We went on a daytrip to Shimonoseki to visit Karato Fish Market. We opted to eat in an airconditioned restaurant because it was almost noon and the weather was already hot outside. And we found this small restaurant at the Kamon Wharf Shopping mall where we ate lunch. It had the view of the Kanmon strait outside. Their sushi were fresh and they also serve Fugu in different ways- sushi, soup, teriyaki and tempura. The service was also good and fast despite the language barrier. Our server was patient as we pointed at the menu to select our orders.

TAKADA COFFEEカモンワーフ店 is a historic coffee shop that has been serving great coffee and sweets since 1987. The main store is situated in the Chofu area and offers a cozy atmosphere with a friendly staff. Visitors rave about the family cheesecake and fluffy shaved ice, as well as the wide selection of coffee options. The owner is praised for her kindness and for roasting high-quality beans from around the world.
Great drink and dessert. Definitely come back next time 😊 their cheesecake is a must and if you eat-in, please order at least one drink per person.

This is the worst and most trashy Japanese store I've ever been to. The arrogant and rude cashier, who doesn't say a word from start to finish. After ordering, she goes to greet the Japanese, completely ignoring foreign tourists. We went first and she was the last to go. Tell her she would look at you with innocent eyes and still not apologize or say anything. The cheesecake can't form, nor can I give a wet wipe, nor do I voluntarily give water, crap! Please stay out of the light at the store where 40 minutes will be until all the other Japanese have finished eating.

Very good selections of coffee , cozy place offers set A & B , please go for set and don’t bother the staff with only one set for 2 people. Soft serve flavors are super tasty. Came back with my girlfriend twice !! The owner super pretty and nice lady , roasting good beans from around the world. Hope can meet her again 💚

Great little coffee shop . Very nice coffee choices & the best cheesecake I have ever had in my life. The staff were nice & friendly. One cool thing is they play lots of Beatles music! I love that!

It had no service at all. The coffee was very pricy (3160 yen for four coffee) and the way of filtering coffee wasn’t good: at the end of drinking the coffee, the fine grain coffee powder would be on the tongue. This is not pleasant at all.

It is not often that I come across a restaurant that has both excellent sweets and coffee, Best coffee, Best Cheesecake, parfait!!

Nestled on a picturesque hill, Hiyorian offers an exquisite dining experience that beautifully marries Japanese and French culinary traditions. As you navigate the narrow, winding road to reach this gem, prepare to be rewarded with breathtaking views of Shimonoseki city and the Kanmon Strait. The restaurant exudes a charming retro ambiance reminiscent of the Taisho era, creating a luxurious yet cozy atmosphere for your meal.
We had a business dinner at this restaurant which all enjoyed. The environment and view was amazing as well as the food while the service was perfect.

(Translated by Google) I had a wonderful lunch. 💖 I had seen this place in a magazine before, and a close friend invited me here. We had a relaxing meal in a room with a view of the ocean. The food was as beautiful as a painting. It was so delicious I wanted to shout "Bravo!" 😘 We chose a drink called a degustation to pair with our meal, and thoroughly enjoyed each and every dish. The staff were incredibly attentive and fluently explained the dishes. ✌️ I can't remember them all, lol. We had sparkling wine, Argentine Chardonnay white wine, and Pinot Noir red wine. It had been a while since I'd had steak with Chaliapin sauce, and it was so satisfying! 😚 I didn't feel bloated, and it soothed both my body and mind. I'd definitely return to Hiyori-an. 😊☺️ They also offer a convenient shuttle service from Shimonoseki Station. 🤗 Please make a reservation if you plan on visiting. The photos are arranged upside down, so it's Kei-san again today. 😉

It was a restaurant where you could enjoy a special time with great food and service while watching the ships passing through the Kanmon Strait. I wouldn't go there often, but I think it would be a great place for anniversaries and celebrations. All of the dishes were elaborately prepared and included things I wouldn't normally eat. As many people have written, the road to the parking lot is quite narrow, but if you proceed carefully and slowly you'll be fine. We had an 8-year-old child with us, but he was so focused on eating that he finished it in no time. It was a good memory. However, the narrow slopes on the way were more than we expected, so I think it would be easier to drive a small car. Motonosumi Inari Shrine is a remote and picturesque shrine in Japan, featuring 123 vibrant red torii gates along a winding clifftop path. It stands out from other Inari shrines as it uses unique characters for its name. Established in 1955, the shrine is believed to grant various blessings such as prosperity in business, maritime safety, luck in love and marriage, and protection from misfortune.
Highly recommend to rent a car as this is in a very remote location. Our drive through google map took us through very skinny roads but that’s part of the adventure. This shrine has been around since 1987 with 123 Tori gates. If you are a photographer, it’s definitely a fun to photograph these gates. You want to double check on the weather to get the best view. It’s a very beautiful shrine! I believe this shrine is in the ‘Top 30 Shrines & Temples I’m glad to have visited’ list from the TripAdvisor. It definitely is worth the hype. Don’t forget to walk through all of the gates as it is supposed to bring luck. At the top, there is an offertory box where you throw in a coin for a good luck.

Motonosumi Inari Shrine was the final stop on our Klook tour, and to be honest, I was starting to get a bit impatient on the way there—the ride from Karato Market took about 1.5 hours. Since we were on a smaller coaster bus navigating narrow roads, it felt more prone to motion sickness. But once we arrived—especially when we reached the actual shrine—it was absolutely worth it. The walk through the rows of torii gates, with the sound of waves crashing nearby and the view of the sea, was nothing short of mesmerizing. There’s something really calming and powerful about the place that photos just can’t fully capture. The area itself is quite simple: a small souvenir shop, a little ice cream stand, and a public restroom with limited cubicles—so don’t expect a lot of amenities. There’s a shortcut going back up: once you reach the shrine at the bottom, look for a small path with a few steps leading to a viewing deck. From there, it's mostly flat terrain back to the area near the shops—no need to climb back up the original stairs. The return trip to the city took around 3.5 hours, as Japan requires rest stops on long drives (there's a mandatory break every 2 hours or so), so factor that into your schedule. If you have the time, I highly recommend visiting via a Klook tour or similar option like hiring a private vehicle - the area is remote, and there’s no direct public transportation

Beautiful place. There are many other things to do other than the Torii shrine. When you get to the end of the walk through the gates there is a lot of beautiful spots to take photos with the Sea of Japan in the background. You do have to pay for parking with yen, there are also lots of places to make wishes so bring your coins!
Nevaeh T — Google review
When the weather is nice, the color of sea surface is a vibrant blue, and paired with brightly colored red birdhouses, it's beautiful! But since there are many stairs, older visitors should pay attention to the safety of their feet when visiting here.

⛩️ Motonosumi Shrine (Nagato, Yamaguchi) Review Motonosumi Shrine is one of the most breathtaking and photogenic spots in Japan. Located in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, it’s famous for its 123 bright red torii gates that stretch dramatically along the hillside toward the blue sea. The contrast between the vivid vermilion gates, the lush greenery, and the deep ocean creates an unforgettable view — it’s no surprise this site has been featured in many travel magazines as one of Japan’s most scenic shrines. The path of torii gates leads you down toward the cliffs, where you can feel the ocean wind and hear the sound of waves crashing below. It’s a peaceful yet powerful place that perfectly captures Japan’s harmony between nature and spirituality. One of the fun traditions here is the offering box located high above the main torii gate — visitors try to toss coins into it for good luck. It adds a playful, unique touch to the visit. The surrounding area is also worth exploring: there are small cafés, souvenir stands, and observation points with panoramic views of the coastline. The shrine staff and locals are welcoming, and the whole area is clean and well maintained. Whether you’re interested in photography, Japanese culture, or simply beautiful seaside landscapes, Motonosumi Shrine is an absolute must-visit. It’s a place that leaves you with both serenity and awe — a perfect blend of natural beauty and sacred tradition.

Fukutoku Inari Shrine is a stunning shrine complex known for its striking crimson torii gates and panoramic views of the offshore islands. Referred to as Inunaki-no-Oinarisan by locals, it is located near Toyoura Kawatana Onsen and offers a serene escape from the crowds. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk through the torii gates leading to the seaside views and main hall.
Very nice and long walk through the tori gates to reach the seaside views and an inari shrine. I’m not sure if they’re signing goshuincho books at this time because of COVID, but the shrine maiden does have plenty of charms. Moderate traffic, as expected of such a majestic shrine but wasn’t too crowded when we visited. Plenty of places to snap great shots of these grounds.

Beautiful Inari shrine at an amazing location. It’s unfortunate most of the shrine area prohibits photography. Still, the experience alone is worth 4 stars.

It was a very beautiful shrine, and had 900+ Torii gates! There were many types of charms, and all of them were very reasonably priced. The environment around the shrine feels very magical and sacred. Very impressive, with an amazing view of the ocean and islands! The staff were also very kind to us, even though our Japanese is not very good. This is now our favorite shrine 💕

Mojiko Station, located in the city of Kitakyushu, Fukuoka prefecture, is a historic Neo-Renaissance train station that was originally built in 1891 and later updated in 1914. It stands on a square with a fountain and is one of the few remaining wooden stations in Japan. The station reflects Western influence with its Neo-Renaissance style appearance and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property.
Mojiko Station is a station on the JR Kyushu Kagoshima Main Line in Moji Ward, Kitakyushu. The current station building is a wooden station building that was completed in 1914. It is a Neo-Renaissance style, symmetrical design, and is the first railway station building in Japan to be designated as an important cultural property, and is a representative tourist attraction in Mojiko.

Mojiko Station is beautiful—it really feels like stepping back in time. I actually visited twice in a row. The first time was during the Kanmon Festival, so it was extremely crowded. The second visit was the next day, and it was much quieter, which allowed me to enjoy the station more. I stopped by the information center (the staff there were very welcoming), and also visited the lost and found office next to the tracks—though that older building wasn’t as charming. Overall, I’m glad I came. It was a wonderful experience.
Kevin W — Google review
Mojiko is our first destination using the JR North Kyushu Pass this trip. Located in Kitakyushu, one can overlook Honshu from the port area. It's not a big place and it's not as crowded compared to Yufuin and the urban areas. We come here for the banana cuisines (beverages, snacks and incredibly banana baked curry) and the sea breeze. Many restaurants serving baked curry line up the streets along Mojiko Station. Head to the nearby observation tower for an unobstructed view. Before you reach, you will pass by a souvenir store for more banana goodies. The banana auction site, located a few metres out of the station was where bananas from Taiwan was auctioned off in the early 90s. There is another shopping arcade that encircled the port area, that's where most of the action is. Most of the attractions are located south of the station, making this an easy itinerary for a day trip.

It is a large yet quiet terminal station next to the harbour. Its bay platforms are a bit similar to those at Hakodate station, but Mojiko station building looks more traditional and grand.

Mojiko station is a small train station that has a lot of history. The fountains for example are relects from 1914 and are still working. The buildings around it also look like they were built a long time ago. There is a fountain in front of the station. Across the street is the Moji Port. We took a ferry to go to the Karato Fish Market and visit tbe attractions nearby. We used the same route going back to Hakata.

This station faces the Kyushu Railway Museum and is a historical station. (The station building was completed in 1914.) The history of the station dates back to 1891. There were no bridges or tunnels in the Kanmon Strait when it first opened, and this station served as the gateway to the railways of Kyushu. The station building is an important cultural property and is popular among Japanese railway enthusiasts.

A nice little park atop Hinoyama. There is a small gift shop, viewing platform and eating area at the top also. There is a cable car line up to the top, but in all my visits I never used it. The parking is free and offers lots of spots. The view from the top of the mountain is pretty spectacular. You can take in the whole of the Kanmon strait, looking across to Kyushu. You also get great views towards Shimonoseki city and Korea (though obviously Korea isn't visible). There is also what I assume to be an old artillery fort with old bunkers and gun emplacements that you can explore. Quite creepy at night.

Historical landmark
Dannoura Battlefield is a narrow, verdant area adorned with sculptures depicting the ancient conflict between the Heike and Genji clans. This site commemorates the 12th-century battle that took place here, offering visitors a glimpse into this historic clash through its evocative statues.
The signboards in various locations indicate that the "Dannoura Historic Battlefield" is located along the Kanmon Strait. The pavements are well-maintained, and several attractions have been designed to recreate the battlefield experience, featuring cannons and statues of Japanese samurai, which makes it both educational and interesting. As you walk along the "Dannoura Historic Battlefield," you will be captivated by the magnificent view of the "Kanmon Bridge" spanning the Kanmon Strait.
Okawa T — Google review
As a self-professed history geek, this was a must-visit for me when I came to Shimonoseki. The battlefield is a pleasant stroll along the waterfront from the station, though buses also run out towards it. The statues on display were well done, and the views add a sense of scale to what happened here. I would have appreciated more than a one-sentence summary of the events in English, however.
Gareth M — Google review
The Battle of Dannoura was a battle fought between the Heishi and Genji clans on March 25, 1185, in Dannoura, Akamagaseki, Nagato Province, at the end of the Heian period in Japan. From the mid-Heian period onwards, the warrior class grew, and among them, the Heishi and Genji clans were the most powerful. These two clans fought their final battle on March 24, 1185, in Dannoura, Akamagaseki, Nagato Province; present-day Shimonoseki. On this day, the armies of the two clans faced off at sea at Dannoura. The Heike divided their 500 ships into three divisions and fought with Yamaga Hideto and Matsura as generals, but around noon the Heike was defeated. Minamoto no Yoritomo of the Genji clan, who won this battle, established the shogunate in Kamakura in 1192, thus beginning the warrior government that would last for approximately 700 years until the Edo period.

Dannoura Battlefield, or 壇之浦古戦場, is a historic site in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, marking the place of the final battle in the Genpei War. Fought in 1185 between the Taira and Minamoto clans, this decisive naval battle led to the Minamoto's victory and marked the rise of the first shogun. Visitors to the area can explore memorials and landmarks associated with this monumental event. The battleground's serene setting by the sea juxtaposes with the turbulent history it represents, making it a poignant destination for those interested in Japan's rich martial legacy.

A battle that took place on March 24, 1185 (April 25, 1185) at the end of the Heian period at Akama Seki Dannoura in Nagato Province (now Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture). This is the final battle of the Jisho-Juei War, which brought down the prosperous Taira clan. The place where the two major powers in Japan at the time fought and settled here. Various stories were born in the battle between these two, and they are still told by people today.

The whole population, and a large proportion of shops, of Shimonoseki seemed to be in this mall when we went there on a Saturday. The streets were empty but the car park of thos mall was packed to the 6th floor. We ate at the inexpensive but delicious Kineya Udon Noodles chain restaurant in the restaurant section on the 6th floor at 800 yen a bowl. We went next door to the attached Daimaru department store to see the art exhibition, the local produce, and the Toukyuu Hands stationery. The mall has an Edion electronics store where we viewed the latest games, a Daiso 100 yen shop, lots of clothes and shoe shops, and a cinema. There are more eateries on the ground (1st) floor. There are massage chairs next to the restaurants on the 6th floor. The only problem for me was the lack of windows.

Takoyaki restaurant
Kameya is a beloved eatery nestled in the basement of Sea Mall, Shimonoseki, renowned for its delicious Tako Soba. This dish, often referred to as soul food, features a delightful combination of yakisoba and takoyaki topped with flavorful seasonings. The small size may still be quite filling, making it a hearty option even for those with smaller appetites.
(Translated by Google) It seems to be Shimonoseki's soul food. I wonder if it's like our fukiya. I heard that Takoyaki is made with sweet sauce Yakisoba and mustard mayo. Takoyaki has a strong texture and is fluffy. You can eat it like a snack at an affordable price. (Translated by Google) I visited because it's said to be Shimonoseki's soul food. I was asked if I wanted mustard mayonnaise. Personally, I was right to choose mustard mayonnaise. It was very delicious. The menu was small. The drink menu only offered beer or cola, and since I can't drink either, I went for cold water. It's a forbidden carbohydrate menu item, so it's not suitable for people on a diet, but it was very delicious. (Translated by Google) Also, prices have gone up. The takoyaki seem smaller than before, I can't even tell if there's octopus inside, and the portion of yakisoba seems smaller... The taste seems to have gotten worse... So I don't think the price increase is inevitable. Kameya used to be tasty, cheap, and had large portions, and it was known as Shimonoseki's soul food, but aren't those tourist prices? When you enter through the front door and walk to the right, you will see stairs going down to the basement. So that's it Immediately after business hours start after 10:30 on Saturday I took out the most recommended Tako Sobayaki for 580 yen. It was run by people of all ages, including grandmothers, grandfathers, young men, and old men, and I got the impression that they were preserving the flavors loved by the locals. With 6 pieces of takoyaki and yakisoba (there's a lot of yakisoba under the takoyaki), it's very filling, and it's enough for one person, or enough for two. The takoyaki had a flat bottom and a chewy texture, and the yakisoba had thick noodles with a rich sauce and mustard mayonnaise that gave it an unmistakable flavor. You can enjoy it for breakfast at Shimonoseki Station or as a snack on the train 😋 It was so delicious! Heike Chaya is a stylish and moderately upscale restaurant located along the Kanmon Strait, offering a unique dining experience with its delectable fugu dishes. The restaurant provides excellent views of the strait, adding to the romantic ambiance for dinner. Guests can enjoy single dishes such as yakisoba and sashimi for as little as 1500 yen, while set meals start around 2500-3000 yen.
This is my first time visiting Yamaguchi, which is famous for fugu cuisines. The dining experience in this restaurant was very enjoyable. We enjoyed delicious fugu dishes, excellent service and wonderful view of the Kanmon Bridge and Strait at the same time. The price was so reasonable that I would recommend to anyone who wants to try fugu in Shimonoseki.

My first time, search by google, rated 4.3 having dinner tonight without booking, unfortunately it is full, we are very disappointed. Finally we can as special arrangement made by a manager I guess, it is great!! We have tried 2 sets and medium size of raw squib. Food is above standard, service is intensive & environment (besides the bridge) is attractive, price is really affordable. Really, it is my first time to be here, and surely not the last time, will come back again

This is a stylish and moderately upscale restaurant. I walked in alone and was shown into a very large private room. At first I felt awkward visiting such a nice restaurant alone but it was no problem. You could easily order single dishes for as little as ¥1500 (yakisoba, sashimi, etc.) and set meals start around ¥2500-3000. I ordered a set, fugu sashimi, and a drink for around ¥5000-6000. Overall, not too pricey for the location and quality. The views of the Kanmon Strait are very excellent. I particularly liked the kawara soba. Fugu sashimi was an interesting experience but I would not seek it out again. If you order it, it comes with a spicy garnish and dipping sauce. Shimonoseki is the most famous place in Japan for fugu, so you should try it while you are here.

Shoeiken Toyoura Blue Line is a seafood restaurant that offers an array of freshly prepared and delicious seafood dishes. Their sashimi set meal, served on Saturdays and Sundays, showcases the freshness of the fish with its crunchy texture and absence of any unpleasant odor. (Translated by Google) After reading the reviews on Google Maps, I drove 2 hours yesterday (April 1st, R7) and went to eat the sea urchin bowl. We arrived about 20 minutes earlier than the restaurant's opening time of 10:30. While I was waiting in my car until business hours, a local person drove up, opened the door, and entered the store. Then my wife said, ``Huh? It's already open for business. Apparently there was also a souvenir shop, and I asked them to wait while looking at the souvenirs inside, so the two of us wandered around the store. On the way, a clerk came over and said that the meal would start at 10:30, which I had read online, so I said yes and went to look around at the souvenirs and menus. Then, around 10:25, the cafeteria was about to open, so I went to the table to sit down and wait, but the waitress from earlier came over and told me that I wasn't allowed to come in until 10:30, but she said that was fine, and made me some tea and took my order. I ordered two servings of sea urchin rice bowl and one serving of squid sashimi. Well, I had a stumbling start due to this, but I went ahead and had the sea urchin bowl. As for the taste of the sea urchin bowl, the sea urchin was fresh and not bad, but I felt that the flavor and sweetness of the sea urchin was a little lacking. However, considering the price, the taste is more than enough. Looking at reviews on Google, there are various reviews, such as the sea urchin at conveyor belt sushi being so delicious that it's still better, but after I got home and looked it up online, I found out that the season for landing sea urchin in Yamaguchi Prefecture is June to July for Bafun sea urchin, June to August for red sea urchin, and March to April for purple sea urchin. Naturally, sea urchin also has its own season, so if you want to eat the sweet sea urchin, you should come between June and August. The reason for the mixed reviews is not the restaurant's fault, but I think it's because they ate it when it was in season. Next time, I would like to try the Akauni season.

(Translated by Google) According to the reviews, people were divided into those who said the sea urchin bowl was delicious and those who said it was bad, but the result was "untasty." It looks black and I can see some grains that aren't clearly defined, which gives me a bad feeling. When you eat it, it has a bitter taste and a slight odor, but no sweetness. Is there a hit or miss? ? I had a seafood bowl for ¥1,800, so I was spared a little damage, but I felt sorry for it because it was a sea urchin bowl. My impressions of the seafood bowl were that the rice had lumps and the sashimi had a slight smell, which was not good. Well, I guess it's worth the price. It's a shame because I had high hopes for the word "fish shop".

(Translated by Google) My family and I stopped by for lunch. Before going, I looked up whether they serve seafood, but there was a sign in front of the restaurant that said, "Today's Sashimi Set Meals Sold Out." Thinking, Oh well, I wrote my name on the waiting board and decided to wait. We were the third group waiting, but we were shown to a seat after about 10 minutes. While looking at the menu, I took a sip of the water they served and was shocked by how bad it smelled. Feeling a little uneasy about the bad taste of the water, I ordered my food. When the food came, I took a bite and was shocked, "It's bad!" The horse mackerel fries in my horse mackerel fried set meal were semi-raw. I can tell they're frozen horse mackerel fries, but raw is just too much. Trying to resist the unpleasant taste, telling myself, "It can't be helped, it can't be helped," I took a sip of the soup and thought, "It's bad!" While it's understandable that the water might taste bad, this was the first time I'd ever experienced soup that tasted so bad. The only thing that was tasty was the takana pickles, which suited my taste and was delicious. While I was enduring the terrible food, I was surprised to see that the group in front of me and the group before that were also ordering the sashimi set meal. The other dishes were also pretty poor, and the whole family agreed that we wouldn't be going back. The food was bad, but the toilet was even worse. You have to flush the toilet yourself. Since you have to hold the hose by hand to flush, it splashes everywhere and is quite dirty. It's been a while since I've been to a restaurant with such bad food and toilets. Champon noodle restaurant
If you find yourself near the Shimonoseki Grand Hotel, make sure to swing by Ringer Hut Shimonoseki Karato for a delightful dining experience. This popular chain is known for its delicious champon, which features chewy low-carbohydrate noodles brimming with fresh vegetables and flavors. The gyoza here is another must-try—crispy on the outside and juicy within, it's hard to resist ordering more!

Stopped by the Ringer Hut in Shimonoseki for a quick bite and was pleasantly surprised. The food was consistent with the chain's usual standard—tasty, fresh, and served hot. Their champon was flavorful, packed with veggies and noodles, and the gyoza was crisp and juicy. Service was prompt and friendly, with staff making an effort despite the language barrier. The atmosphere, while clean and functional, felt a bit dated and lacked warmth. It's more of a quick-stop, no-frills setting, which is fine if you're just grabbing a casual meal but don’t expect much in terms of ambiance. Overall, great value and a solid option if you're in the area looking for a satisfying meal.

(Translated by Google) Draft beer with gyoza🍺 Super delicious!! ️!! ️ The gyoza that I must have ordered in large quantities If you share it, it will disappear immediately💦 You can eat at least 10 pieces per person🔥🔥 A chain restaurant famous for Champon and Sara-udon. Set menu with fried rice and gyoza etc. I’m also happy that there are various combinations☺️ (Original)

(Translated by Google) Great when you're concerned about calories Champon low-carbohydrate noodles, It's chewy and delicious. You can now choose gyoza with or without garlic. I'm glad it happened. Above all, this store The customer service is amazing no matter when I visit. I feel good every time I eat ☺️ on the tablet installed on the table Now you can order Take-out as well as eat-in Now you can easily ask for it. The first time, I was a little confused about the operation, so I have nothing to say if you just look at that part.

(Translated by Google) In Yamaguchi Prefecture, there are Nagasaki Chanmen and Ringer Hut. The ringer hat is simpler. Nagasaki Chanmen originated in Sanyo Ono City in 1971. After opening Omelet Rice Tei in Dunhuang, affiliated companies merged and disappeared. Ringer Hut originated in Nagasaki City in 1974. Tonkatsu Hamakatsu. Nationwide chain. In the 1970s, two companies were doing business under the name Nagasaki Chanmen, although they were completely unrelated. I like both Hamakatsu and Ringer Hut because the vegetables and other ingredients are so good that you wouldn't think they are chain stores. The noodles are also chewier than the cheap noodles on the market. I would like to support Nagasaki Chanmen as it is authentic and uses a hot pot. The deficit of 5 billion in 2020 is the result of a struggle even before the impact of the coronavirus. It's something I want to support. ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー “Hokkaido Corn Miso Champon” is on sale for a limited time! Karato store has the best customer service no matter when you come. Although it has a touch panel, the bright customer service remains the same. I love the selection of songs with piano in this cheerful, family-like atmosphere. You can enjoy your meal in peace. It is different from the food court.

(Translated by Google) I went there for the first time in a while. I ordered hard yakisoba and fried rice, but it was disappointing... The fried rice seemed to have been fried in oxidized oil (lard)? It was light and fluffy, but I wish they had paid more attention to it. I couldn't finish it. Even with the yakisoba, the vegetables were crunchy, but they didn't feel cooked through. They were too raw. I was hungry, so I ate it, but... I wish they would think about it a bit.
