Seafood market
Market
Karato Fish Market is a bustling hub with numerous vendors offering sashimi, sushi, and other prepared foods. What sets it apart from other fish markets in Japan is its abundance of fugu, also known as pufferfish. The market is heavily regulated for the preparation of fugu, requiring chefs to undergo extensive training before serving it. Located along Route 9, visitors can explore a wide variety of seafood at the market, including whale meat in nearby restaurants.
Nice place to opt for sashimi and other seafood meal. All freshly prepared. Very busy place and prices are reasonable i guess. After you bought your food, benches are available outside the fish market for you to.sit and enjoy your seafood meal. There are shops and convenience store nearby too. Ice cream vendors are available too.

An unexpected lunch date to this fish market. If you love sushi, this is a place to go. So many stalls offering fresh sushi of different types. Some offer treys to let you pick and choose, while other do it for you and some specialize in a specific fish. We waited in one queue for about 10 minutes or so for the tuna specials. Mmmmm sooooo good! So hard to decide and it’s all in your face…LOVE IT! And if you’re worried that this market has the “fishy smell” don’t even. I was fine being in there and didn’t have that stink that many other markets in other Asian countries have. This is a more local touristy spot, which is great because you don’t have those big city crowds. I’d go back if I can! YUM!🍣🍱🐟🐠🍤🐡🎏

If you’re visiting Shimonoseki, Karato Market is definitely a must-see spot.
Fresh and delicious sushi is waiting for you inside. For those arriving by ferry, you can easily hop on a bus or taxi (or even walk, since it’s not too far). But if you’re driving, be prepared—parking can be a bit of a hassle, especially on sunny days when the wait time tends to get long. Most people enjoy their food in the open area right next to the market, but recently they’ve opened a dining space on the second floor. There’s a small fee (I believe it was about 300 yen per person), but on a hot day with nowhere to sit, it’s a very welcome option. Grab some tasty sushi, relax, and take in the view of the peaceful blue sea—you’ll really feel the charm of Shimonoseki!

Karato Fish Market in Shimonoseki is a lively waterfront market famous for super-fresh seafood, especially blowfish (fugu). On weekends and holidays, stalls sell sushi, sashimi, and seafood bowls at affordable prices, making it popular with both locals and visitors. You can buy your food, then enjoy it outside while overlooking the Kanmon Strait. It’s a great spot to taste fresh Japanese seafood in a casual atmosphere.

🐟 Karato Fish Market (Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi) Review Karato Fish Market is one of the liveliest and most enjoyable seafood markets in western Japan. Located right by the sea in Shimonoseki, it offers visitors a vibrant atmosphere filled with the sights, sounds, and smells of fresh seafood. Every morning, local fishermen and vendors display an incredible variety of freshly caught fish and shellfish. The highlight for most visitors is the weekend sushi market, where dozens of stalls sell beautifully prepared sushi, sashimi, and seafood rice bowls at very reasonable prices. You can walk along the pier with a tray of fresh sushi while enjoying the sea breeze and view of the Kanmon Strait — a truly local experience. The market staff are friendly and energetic, happy to explain the different types of fish and preparation styles. There are also souvenir shops and small restaurants nearby where you can try blowfish (fugu), the specialty of Shimonoseki. The area around the market is clean, lively, and easy to explore. It’s best to visit in the morning (around 8–10 a.m.) when the selection is at its peak. Overall, Karato Fish Market is a must-visit for seafood lovers — a place where you can enjoy delicious, affordable sushi, learn about Japan’s fishing culture, and feel the authentic spirit of a coastal city.

If your looking for a Family tour place, you got the right place. Drink and eat 1-2dollar sushi! You can buy cold sake at the sake shop in the right corner.eat the sushi at the bench out side. Abalone sashimi is Great too.
Norifumi S — Google review
If you’re visiting Mojiko, take the ferry across to Shimonoseki on Honshu, where you’ll find the famous Karato Fish Market—a popular spot among tourists. The market is especially known for selling sushi and is only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. You can buy sushi inside and then enjoy it outside at the many seating areas while taking in the ocean view. The market’s signature specialty is fugu (pufferfish), served as both sushi and sashimi. In fact, the pufferfish is even the symbol of the market. The sushi here is quite affordable, with plenty of vendors to choose from. The taste is pretty good too—not bad at all. The fugu, in particular, has a unique texture: it leaves a slight numbness on your tongue, but it’s delicious.
Busher P — Google review
We went crazy in this market. Great fresh sushi and sashimi with great value. This market is famous for puffer fish and whale. My first experience with whale sushi, it was wild. 22 pieces of sushi with toro, hamachi, eel, sardine, whale with a place of toro and a puffer fish sashimi for below ¥10,000. You can sit and eat by the sea.

Mojiko Retro is a charming destination in Kita Kyushu, known for its historic architecture along the harbor. Visitors can explore shops, eateries, and enjoy various events in this area. The Mojiko Retro Tourist Center is a one-stop shop offering a variety of items including sweets and signature crafts like Japanese wooden dolls. Additionally, Mojiko Kaikyo Plaza features shops selling traditional music boxes and other trinkets.
It's a port where you can overlook to honshu lsland from kyushu island, to of the 5 islands in Japan. The scenary and fantastic with good sunlight. A place to relax, but not much happening. Just some beautiful old style buildings there and a bridge connecting 2 islands

Visited Mojiko Retro District on September 12, 2025. Even in mid-September it was still hot and humid, but the retro-style buildings, old port atmosphere, and relaxed vibe made it a very enjoyable stroll. That day there were several pop-up shops selling dog goods and many visitors with their pets—possibly a special “Dog Day”—which gave the town a cheerful and lively feel. We also enjoyed the shopping area, where visitors can eat local dishes, relax in cafés, and shop for souvenirs. The retro setting makes it a pleasant place to wander and take breaks. In the early evening, we went up to the 31st-floor Observation Room near the waterfront. For just ¥300, we got a stunning 270° panoramic view of the port, the Kanmon Strait, and Shimonoseki across the water. Seeing the scenery shift from daylight to dusk, as the town lights began to glow, was unforgettable. I recommend visiting in the afternoon through the evening so you can enjoy both the daytime stroll and the magical night view from above. Mojiko Retro is compact, walkable, and offers the perfect mix of history, culture, food, and scenery.

Not recommend if you do not have free time. Nothing to do much. The view is amazing and beautiful but that's it. The banana soft cream is wonderful. However, overall is so so.

If you want to see one of the greatest examples of how western influence made its way in Japan, visit Mojiko Retro. It’s a beautiful dock with many European buildings and tons of dining options, shops, museums, view points and water features. The train station itself is already a great attraction.
Hank R — Google review
Assuming this is the geotag of the wharf area, this is the most lively location where tourists and local partake in souvenir buying and eating, if not for the yaki curry to the east of the station. Made in Japan products and handicrafts line the bay area and many take shelter from the rain indoors. Since you are here, just get the banana products like cakes and tarts. I managed to buy a stack of Tirolian for my students back home. Feedback was that it was delicious, as is all snacks.

Nice little town with historical buildings, shops, restaurants, and lots of places to watch the ocean activities in the strait. Catch a bus or tram to the pedestrian walkway that takes you under tge strait to Honshu Island. Visit the fish market and enjoy the wharf. Then catch the ferry back to Mojiko.

Kaikyo Plaza is a charming waterfront destination that captures the essence of a bustling market with a touch of nostalgia. It offers an array of local eateries serving delectable dishes like baked curry and kawara soba, as well as an assortment of shops selling handicrafts, clothing, and artisanal goods. Visitors can easily lose themselves in the variety of stores including general shops, seafood markets, and gift boutiques.
If you walk along the road from the old Moji Mitsui Club toward the seaside promenade, you will come across the Mojiko Retro Kaikyo Plaza, which has shops and restaurants. This is the first place where bananas were imported to Japan, so there are many banana-related products. If you visit Mojiko Retro, this is the place where you must take a commemorative photo. There are two banana-shaped Banana Man figures on both sides with funny expressions and poses, which are signs that this is the first place where bananas were imported to Japan. Walking through the plaza along the Mojiko Retro Kaikyo Strait feels like you are in Eastern Europe. The Mojiko Retro Cruise runs around Mojiko Port, and it is a cruise ship that tours the area around Mojiko Port.

Soba noodle shop
Kawara Soba Mojiko Retro Shop offers a unique local dish called kawara soba, which has its roots dating back to the 1870s. Inspired by the story of soldiers from the Satsuma Domain using hot kawara (baked clay roof tiles) to cook their meals during the samurai revolts, this dish has a rich historical background.
Have you heard of Kawara Soba? The noodles are grilled. The broth is a little sweet. You can see the ocean from this restaurant. Highly recommended! 瓦蕎麦
RENA玲 — Google review
Soba on a tile-roofed plate. The problem is that the tile-roofed plate is too hot, so the soba gets burnt. It tastes pretty good. I wish the tile-roofed plate was not so cold. Rather, ochazuke, which is warm tea poured over rice, is incredibly delicious.
Platinum G — Google review
I liked the atmosphere and odd style (for people from out of prefecture like me) to cook soba , their soba is Cha-Soba the green tea in buckwheat noodles, pan fried at Kawara the material which is usually using to the roof of the house. Fugu the blowfish is one of the feature of this sea area around. Taking (the skin thin cut and marinated) it with Ponzu citrus sauce is golden.
Futoshi C — Google review
It was on Sunday and sunny ☀️ very busy restaurant, but very efficient. I probably waited 30 mins ish. Nice Kawara soba, I did enjoy it 😋

Everything was horrible. Avoid at any cost. Staff are trying to collide you and unbelievably rude. They cannot speak polite Japanese language. Soba noodle tasted bad, pork was like cheap yakiniku. Unameshi tasted nothing.

BEAR FRUITS 門司港本店 is a popular and modern venue known for its specialty baked curries, including options like beef and cheese served with rice. Visitors highly recommend trying the baked curry, which is a must-try when in Mojiko. The beef curry is served in a hot ceramic dish with nicely browned cheese on top. Despite being busy, the wait time is short, and even families with strollers are accommodated well.
I went to Mojiko again at night to eat yaki curry. It was delicious. It was worth the effort to go twice. They were friendly. The salad was also delicious.

Great atmosphere. I feel like baked curry is very similar to bake rice in Hong Kong except in Mojiko its using Japanese style curry. Nevertheless a very yummy meal if you like richer taste and cheese. One of nice thing at Bear Fruits is that if Curry is not your thing they also have some pasta options

Had a good food after a long drive. Came in about 6.30pm. There wasn't many people. The pretty lady that serve us is kind and helpful. Even though limited English. Food wad great. Chef came out for the bill too. Had a good meal.

Great experience trying baked curry for the first time. Apparently the thing to try when you visit Mojiko. I tried the one with beef. Served in a hot ceramic dish. The cheese was nicely browned. I recommend it. (Not spicy so don't worry about that) Quite busy so we had to write our names in the waiting list book outside but we only had to wait a short time. We had our baby in a stroller but that wasn't a problem, they even brought a kiddies cup with water and a straw when we sat down. Highly recommended.

Kokura Castle, a reconstructed 17th-century castle located in Kitakyushu, Japan, is a historical gem with its distinctive architectural features and rich cultural offerings. The castle's keep showcases the unique karazukuri style and the traditional nozura-zumi stone wall. Visitors can explore the eight separate gates and enjoy the beautiful gardens surrounding the castle. Inside, there are various exhibits including a folk museum and the Matsumoto Seicho museum.
Kokura Castle is a fantastic place to spend a few hours exploring history and nature. The castle features a wide range of interactive exhibits that bring the region’s past to life—making learning genuinely fun and engaging for all ages. The surrounding grounds are beautifully maintained, with lush greenery, peaceful walking paths, and a scenic moat that adds to the charm and atmosphere. Whether you're a history enthusiast or just looking for a relaxing and enriching outing, Kokura Castle is well worth the visit.
Darrell H — Google review
I first saw this place while out on my morning run (a short distance from Royal Rihga Hotel). It's in a beautiful urban area next to the river and is contrasted by modern architecture, shopping areas and restaurants. Inside the castle is educational, with many displays. There is a cafe on the top, 5th floor. The highlight for me in the castle were the massive tiger paintings.
Daniel D — Google review
Quite a small castle but fun to visit. Especially for kids. Some interaction games are good for learning which won’t make you bored. Excellent view of the Kokura city from the top floor. Well maintained and arranged inside out.
Huang S — Google review
Kokura Castle is a genuinely lovely stop in Kitakyushu, offering a great mix of historical charm and engaging modern exhibits. While the current main keep is a 1959 reconstruction (the original burned down), the builders did a beautiful job. The castle exterior, surrounded by the moat and the peaceful Katsuyama Park grounds, is very photogenic—especially during cherry blossom season! Inside the castle, you'll find a well-designed, interactive museum. Unlike some older castles, the displays here are fun, with hands-on elements that bring the Edo period and the castle's history (including its famous residents like Miyamoto Musashi) to life. It’s definitely engaging for both adults and kids. The view from the top floor provides a nice panorama of the city, showing the blend of history right next to the modern Riverwalk Kitakyushu complex. Pro-Tip: Make sure to grab the combo ticket that includes the main keep and the adjacent Kokura Castle Garden for a great value and a peaceful break. Overall, it's a very pleasant, worthwhile, and affordable way to spend a few hours in the city.

So beautiful and the story of the castle and shogunate. I really like the place and the history. Everything is near. And there is a festival too. First time we visited here. Kokura Castle is also known as Cherry blossom castle🌸🏯
Rochelle O — Google review
A small but charming castle with a huge parking lot just across the street. You can take the paid elevator up to the castle. There aren’t many interactive activities, but the view from the top floor is lovely and relaxing. The souvenir selection isn’t particularly exciting, yet the overall visit feels easy and pleasant — a nice, laid-back castle experience.
Vien C — Google review
A historic castle. It's very beautiful and you can go inside. It has been burned down and rebuilt many times. It has the history of Japan written inside. It was very moving! You should definitely go!🏯

Tanga Market, also known as Kitakyushu's Kitchen, is a historic covered market with over 100 vendors offering fresh seafood, produce, meat, and prepared foods. Established around 1913 along the Kantakegawa River bank by sardine fishermen, this bustling market has been serving the people of Kitakyushu for over a century.
Great local market with affordable breakfast and lunch options. Ate at a tuna restaurant and the chicken katsudon place. Also had a coffee at Benny's. Wanted to try the oden but long lines for it. If you're a tourist, some vendors don't like you taking pictures. The one who yelled at me was an older fruit vendor. So, be aware that photography may not always be welcome.
Ian G — Google review
Although the official opening hours are 10-17, many shops were closing or had only a few items for sale when I visited the market at around 15:30. There are many shops selling fresh sashimi, as well as some shops selling fresh vegetables, fruits and wagyu. It would be a nice place to visit with friends and family. I did not see any seating space for people to enjoy the food, but it is not far from the park around Kokura Castle so a possible way may be to bring the food from the market to the park instead.

Interesting market to visit with lots of shops. Quite a number of food stalls as well, ranging from Oden to fish cakes to fried food.
Randy N — Google review
The Tanga Market is a traditional market that was formed during the Taisho period from 1912 to 1926. There are about 120 stores selling ingredients along both sides of the market, so it is also called the "Kokura Kitchen." Many tourists visit here to feel the local atmosphere while looking at fresh seafood, meat, fruits, and vegetables. It is also famous for its traditional food that has been passed down from the Edo period. There are stores selling "nukamiso-daki," fish seasoned with Japanese miso, and "nukazuke," rice bran pickles, and there are also restaurants that offer a variety of menus such as fish cakes, udon, and seafood dishes, so it is a good place to have a meal while browsing the market.

Designed by the same team behind Fukuoka's Canal City, it boasts a unique exterior design and features a rooftop garden with stunning views of Kokura Castle.
Good location for travellers. There are a variety of shops and restaurants, so it was a good place to spend an hour or two on a hot summer day. It's right next to Kokura Castle, so it would be a good idea to park here and look around. Parking is quite expensive in Japan. I haven't read it exactly, but according to the explanation, parking is free if you have a purchase receipt after parking. It seemed to be divided into 1 hour and 3 hour sessions depending on the amount. There are also Ropia, Daiso, and Starbucks, so it won't be difficult to get a receipt. If I had known it would be this close to Kokura Castle, I would have parked here.

The building itself is spectacular and what’s more, it’s an excellent place to take pictures of the Kokura Castle.

The architecture is great, location is incredible but the shops sadly lacking. Very plain and basic. Nothing at all fancy...like cake or chocolate! Nothing! Very disappointed!

This mall looks huge but only some shops are interesting. There are 7 shopping levels in this mall with familiar shops such as ABC Mart, Taito, Super Sports Xebio, 3coins+ and CanDo.

Katsuyama Park is a spacious and verdant area in Kitakyushu, featuring a playground, waterfront paths, and a library. The park is known for its seasonal cherry blossoms, making it an ideal spot to visit from March onwards. It also offers breathtaking views of the surroundings throughout the year. The park hosts various events such as the Hyakuman-odori procession and Natsu-matsuri Daishugo festival floats.
Katsuyama park is located next to the Kokura Castle and is a nice place to visit. It has multiple large lawns where locals can relax or play. The flower gardens are well-maintained and add to the park’s beauty. Overall, it’s a very nice park with a relaxing atmosphere.

Udon noodle restaurant
Japanese restaurant
We arrived 5 minutes before the shop opens and already there is a queue that ended up filling up all the seats. The owner was kind enough to let us dine at the table outside knowing we were probably in a rush. We chose almost all types of oden to try, the beancurd-wrapped mochi seemed to be the popular item. We also get a generous amount of yellow wasabi (very spicy) as condiment to our oden. They were all delicious.
Chang J — Google review
Is it rare to see gobo in an udon shop? I ordered the beef + tempura gobo bowl and it's very satisfying. A must visit local place in Kokura. Only ¥650.
Manh N — Google review
Stopped by just before closing, and even late in the day, the oden was on point. The daikon was beautifully flavored — sweet and deeply seasoned, just how it should be. The highlight, though, was the burdock-stuffed fish roll in the center — absolutely delicious and packed with umami.
Helena K — Google review
There was a line right from the opening! What a surprise! A popular restaurant. Located in a shopping arcade. Handmade udon. Delicious broth.

Excellent oden! You can choose your own bowl and customise one for yourself at a cheap price.

(Translated by Google) When it's crowded, you might have to wait a bit, as the indoor seating is quite cramped. The menu is only in Japanese, so we used GPT to translate it ourselves. We ordered the oden directly, and it was very refreshing and delicious. We really liked the chewy texture of the udon noodles. This was the most attractive place we visited after walking through the entire market, and it certainly didn't disappoint! Yakitori restaurant
Gill and Co at Kokura Station is a warm and inviting restaurant where the staff offers English menus and service, making it easy for international visitors to enjoy their experience. The option to stand while dining provides an opportunity to interact with locals, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. The manager's extensive knowledge of Japanese alcohol and the diverse selection available make for a delightful experience. Additionally, their willingness to offer recommendations based on individual preferences adds a personal touch.
Very welcoming restaurant. The staff were able to provide some English service and English menu and were very friendly and patient to communicate with. There were standing and sitting options available but I chose to stand as it gave me a chance to communicate with some of the locals. The manager knows a lot about Japanese alcohol and the store stocks a lot of different varieties. If you do not know which to try just ask him his recommendation based on what kind of flavor you enjoy.

The food here is to accompany the alcohol, hence more salty than usual. Quality is so so as well. The only interesting feature is the 100yen draught beer that is served vending machine style at the bar counter in a small glass.

Sushi restaurant
Tenzushi Kyomachi is a top-notch sushi restaurant that offers an exclusive dining experience with only five seats available. The second-generation owner continues the legacy of using locally sourced seafood to create sushi with intense flavors and umami, setting it apart from traditional Edomae style. Reservations can be challenging to secure, as the restaurant only accommodates six seats per round and does not serve alcohol. Despite its exclusivity, the friendly owner speaks English and serves tea to complement the exceptional dining experience.
Hands down the best sushi meal ever. The chef is very friendly and eve though we didn’t speak the language, the chef explained to us and was very kind which made the whole experience even better. Every bites were just amazing from the special crafted sushi that makes it unique and the well thought through sequence that gives a great flow to the meal. The service was also excellent. The staff would come with a hot towel everytime you go to the toilet in order for you to clean your hand before you sit back down to make sure it’s all hygienic. The attention to detail of the space is also impressive. We love it there.

Had the privilege to dine at Tenzushi Kyomachi, the highest rated sushi shop on Tabelog in Kyushu. Tenzushi serves its own unique Kyushu-style sushi. Each bite of sushi here was heavenly. Service was warm and hospitable. Amano-San speaks English. For foreigners, you will need to book via Tableall but it’s well worth the price.
K. L — Google review
1st visit March 2024: Amano san is seriously one of the friendliest Taisho ! He was so accomodating to us foreigners. Needless to say his Kyushu style nigiris are 🔥 only with using natural flavors instead of shoyu. I loved them all, especially his special Zuke marinade, Kuruma Ebi , Ika , Kue, slightly smoked Sawara, and Nodoguro. 2nd visit Jan 2025: Citrus is being used on majority of our nigiris. His netas especially maguro are top notch. Really liked the Shime saba with pickled myoga and konbu , sazae with okra this time. Color and flavor of Katsuo of this season is impressive too.

Hot dog restaurant
Sun Dog is a renowned hot dog spot located in Kokurakita-ku, Kitakyushu. Their premium sun dog features a crispy and fluffy bread that resembles French bread, along with a thick and crispy sausage that's incredibly meaty. The dish is topped with an original anchovy sauce made through a unique manufacturing method, providing an addictive flavor. In addition to their delicious sausages, they also offer tempting chicken options on their menu.
Great bun, great sausage, great toppings. There's nothing to fault really. If you get the fries, don't hesitate to take the Yuzu Mayonnaise. It was exquisite! Friendly service as well!
Adrian B — Google review
Really good baguette with crispy skin sausage. May have to wait for the order since there's only one lady to prepare the hotdogs.
Rainbow L — Google review
Really friendly. Great hot dog (I had the signature 'sun dog'). A meal set gets you a hot dog, side, and drink for 100 yen off. Espresso was okay, fries chunky and crunchy with a soft, fluffy center. 880 yen, felt like good value. Take out only (or two benches just next to the counter).
Ben T — Google review
Good place to grab hot dogs and fries. Sometimes the line is long so make sure you have enough time to wait. The taste is great though. It's worth waiting.
Pirat K — Google review
(Translated by Google) 2025/6/3 I had business at Riverwalk Kitakyushu that day, and had lunch at "Sun Dog" in Muromachi, which I had been interested in for a while. I think it was featured on TV before, and a fan of the restaurant took over the restaurant from the previous owner. The menu is posted on the door before you enter the store, so you can decide what you want to order to some extent before you go in. It's a small thing, but it's very nice. When you enter the store, there is a counter in the middle and benches on both sides, making it a small space. You order and receive your order at the counter. This time I ordered... - Onion sauce (590 yen including tax) + A set - French fries (380 yen including tax) - Iced coffee (350 yen including tax) *If you order the set, you will get a 100 yen discount. The onion sauce hot dog is the most popular item in the store, so I decided to try the No. 1 first. The fries come in a wide variety of flavors, including salt, curry, garlic, spice, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, and yuzu mayo. This time, I chose the salt flavor. After ordering, I waited on a bench next to the counter. The food was served in just under 5 minutes. The onion sauce hot dog also comes with a sauce made from simmered onions in addition to the chopped onions topping. The rest of the seasoning is simple, with just pepper. When you take a bite, the crispy texture of the sausage and the onion sauce that comes out from inside are a perfect match. The sauce is a bit similar to Japonaise sauce, and I think it's a flavor that Japanese people like. The fries were also piping hot and crispy. They weren't too salty, and were filling and delicious. The iced coffee also had a strong bitterness that is unique to iced coffee, and went well with the hot dogs and fries! I would definitely like to come back again. Next time I'd like to try other types of hot dogs. Thanks for the meal!
