Nestled within a serene forest, the Kumano Taisha Shrine is an iconic shrine complex that captivates visitors with its stunning wood carvings and rich spiritual ambiance. Often referred to as the "department store of shrines," it houses numerous deities under its impressive thatched roof. The shrine features a large temple bell and even has a museum showcasing its cultural heritage.
A fairly unique shrine with traditional straw roof, walk-through chime tunnels with mist, super intricate wood carvings, and a cool staircase leading up to it. If you can find all 3 rabbits in the wood carving, you'll be lucky. Definitely recommended to visit if you're in the area.

This shrine is surrounded by huge cedar trees, which are absolutely gorgeous. We were lucky English to visit when the bells were surrounding the shrine, which was an amazing experience. There were so many bells you could hear them from afar!
Mary — Google review
A very interesting shrine with a wealth of wooden sculpture. If you take the tour to the back, you can try to find the three rabbits hidden among the woodwork -- I could only find two! Also a modern and relaxing cafe at the entrance to the shrine. There is a famous moon ceremony at certain times of the year that requires reservations.

It was a very nice shrine! Worth seeing!

Visit in Summer to hear the cicadas, or in Autumn to see the beautiful colours. Dont forget to marvel at the beautiful carvings at the back of the site, if you can spot all three rabbits, then you have a good eye. The shrine boasts a shop if you want a charm. At the bottom of the stairs is a wonderful cafe.

Yonezawa Castle Ruins, located in a historical city center, was once home to the Nagai clan and later governed by the Uesugi clan. The castle grounds are now identifiable by surrounding moats and connecting bridges leading to Matsugasaki Park. The park features statues of military commanders and politicians from the Sengoku period to the Edo period, providing an opportunity to learn about Japan's history.

(Translated by Google) Built by the Nagai clan during the Muromachi period, the castle later became the residence of the Date clan. The current Yonezawa Castle was founded on the layout of Uesugi Kagekatsu, who was transferred from Echigo. It is said that there are few castle ruins or remains at Yonezawa Castle, but this is probably because it is reminiscent of a castle from the late Sengoku period. Yonezawa Castle did not have a castle tower, and instead the lord's residence was built in the center of the main citadel. In place of a tower, there were two three-story corner towers to the northeast and northwest, as well as several other two-story towers. The castle's simple yet sturdy construction, with earthen ramparts rather than extensive use of stone walls, follows the same layout as Kamisashi Castle, which Uesugi Kagekatsu built in Aizu, and continues the tradition of the Uesugi clan from the Echigo period.

Park
Matsugasaki Park, situated on the former grounds of Yonezawa Castle, offers a serene atmosphere with its water-filled moats and historical sites related to the influential Uesugi clan. It's a great spot for families to take a leisurely stroll and appreciate the park's beauty while also appealing to history enthusiasts interested in Japan's feudal history. The park hosts events like the Uesugi Lantern Festival, creating a magical ambiance with illuminated sakura trees and a picturesque red bridge.
A beautiful historic location, great not only for families to stroll and admire the beauty of the park, but also for those fascinated by Japan's feudal history, particularly of the Uesugi Clan. I went during the Uesugi Lantern Festival and the atmosphere was fantastic. I first went on the night the lanterns were first lit, which was pretty magical, especially seeing the (then bare) sakura trees lit up alongside the moat leading the eye to a beautiful red bridge also lit up. The next day the festival was in full swing, with food carts out selling classing Japanese festival food fare as well as souvenirs. The energy was fantastic, watching kids have snowball fights and couples taking pictures with the lanterns it was truly picturesque. I wuold love to return when the cherry blossom are in full bloom and to learn more of the Uesugi Shrine!

Museum
Toko Sake Museum, established in 1597 and managed by Kojima Sohoten, is a prominent sake museum in Tohoku. It offers an extensive display of the brewery's history and allows visitors to taste various sake varieties, including the renowned 'Toko' brand and award-winning umeshu. Housed in a historic building that was once a sake brewery, the museum features old merchant equipment exhibits, traditional room reconstructions, and a serene garden.
This sake museum is housed in a wonderful old building which was itself a sake brewery before Toko took on the responsibility for renovating it. So glad that they preserved it! It's worth checking if a guide is available to get the most out of your visit but you can also follow along with the English explanations. The exhibition of old merchant equipment and reconstructions of traditional rooms are really interesting and don't miss out on the lonely garden. It's best not to drive if visiting here so that you can do some sake sampling. Toko's sake is very high quality and, with a variety of types to choose from, you are sure to find one that you like.
Paul W — Google review
Totally worth the money. Excellent sake making displays as well as the rooms and the garden. Interesting history on the Wagu beef cattle raised locally. Sake tasting was fun, but of course I would like bigger portions, and who wouldn't? LOL. The young woman at the tasting room made a excellent recommendation to a upscale beef restaurant that was totally a great experience and reasonable priced lunch.

As a sake lover, if you are traveling Yamagata and stopping by Yonezawa, give Toko Sake Museum a visit. Toko, as one of the oldest sake breweries in Japan, produces some of the nicest sake in the market. Here, not only can you visit the museum to learn about part of the history of sake, you can also taste different sakes by Kojima Sohonten: from the brewery execlusive bottles, to the very premium top-of-the-line execellence. It is a must-visit for sake enthusiasts visit Yonezawa.

Tengendai Kogen is a magnificent resort hotel with three lift stops. The snow on the upper two stops is more cushioned, providing an optimal skiing experience. However, the resort may not be ideal for beginners as the slopes following the lifts are suited for intermediate level skiers and above. Renting full wear and equipment at Tengendai Kogen costs 5,600 units of currency, while a one-day lift pass is available for 4,990 units of currency.
I visited this hotel in March, 2023 to use its bathing facility to freshen up after a day of skiing. While the bathing facility was simple and was not a hot spring (as we were informed), it was perfect for a quick post-ski refresh and was very affordable at only 400 yen. We were perfectly refreshed for our journey back to Tokyo. Highly recommended to stop by after skiing at Tengendai!

Uesugi Hakushakutei, also known as Earl's Residence, is a must-visit in the castle town area. This nationally designated cultural tangible property is located within the Uesugi-kinenkan Memorial Hall and boasts a stunning interior alongside an exquisite Japanese garden. The architecture features sheet copper tiles for the roofs and Kisohinoki cypress for pillars and beams.
Enjoy the tastes and culture of Yonezawa at the historical preserved Japanese architecture I had a wonderful experience at Uesugi Hakushakutei for my first visit in Yonezawa and yet it is still a must-go to place whenever I'm in Yonezawa. It is a perfect place to have proper lunch or dinner as they offer you a variety of dishes that inherit the traditions of the Uesugi family and use local cuisine as well as that famous Yonezawa A5 rank bee. Everything they serve is absolutely beautiful and the staff would kindly give you the food presentation:) Also, I recently discovered that this place has developed the vegan menu (advanced reservations recommended) and it looks so good too! It is always nice to have more vegan options especially places like rural area in Japan which we can not often expect for those options..) After a lovely meals, walking in their garden would be also one of your highlight too! I went there last summer but I bet they offer you beautiful Japanese garden in every season:)

Ramen restaurant
Nestled conveniently near Uesugi Shrine, Ohoribata Sapporo is a charming ramen shop that captures the essence of traditional Japanese dining. The cozy atmosphere invites you to enjoy a unique culinary experience, especially with their signature Yonezawa ramen. This dish features handmade medium-thin curly noodles that perfectly complement the light soy sauce broth, which boasts a rich flavor profile thanks to its double soup made from dried sardines and animal stock.
(Translated by Google) I received the ramen set. The noodles are hand-made medium-thin curly noodles, and the soup is chewy and has a deep flavor. Although the soup has some back fat floating in it, it has a refreshing taste, and the overall soup is light but rich. The topping is meaty char siu. Menma, seaweed, and green onions have a good texture. The fried sliced pork garnish is crunchy and seasoned, so it's delicious as is. Thank you for the meal. This parking lot can park 2 cars in front of the store (forward parking, no backing up), and 4 cars in the contracted parking lot 4 doors away, but it's a little far away, so if you come to the store on a rainy day, bring an umbrella. I recommend that.

I'm grateful to be able to enjoy their ramen noodles again. The atmosphere of the shop is Japanese style, and it's a little small. It's about the same size. They also had miso ramen, but I was curious about the chilled ramen so I ordered it. As the name suggests, the ramen was not hot, but rather cold. However, it wasn't just chilled normally, the noodles were more like Chinese noodles, and the soup tasted better than usual. (Maybe the signature menu is soy sauce?) Instead of chashu, it had plenty of stir-fried vegetables and pork. The miso soup was light, but the flavor of the ingredients blended in well, making it especially delicious during the chilly weather. The noodles were a little thick and curly, and there was plenty of it. There was also 2/3 ramen, so this might be a good choice for women. Soba noodle shop
If you're on the hunt for a unique dining experience, look no further than そば工房 蓼. Nestled in a charming setting, this restaurant offers an inviting atmosphere that feels both rustic and clean. The owner takes pride in crafting delicious soba noodles from homemade raw flour, ensuring each bowl is fresh and flavorful. During my visit, I enjoyed the regular plate of soba paired with delightful tempura that had an irresistible crunch—definitely a highlight!

(Translated by Google) I visited you during the holidays. The gate is very nice The garden that can be seen from the tatami room is also a wonderful shop. It must be nice to see a snow scene. For the soba, I had the board soba. When it comes to soba, I thought that in Yamagata, the dark-colored country soba was the norm, but the one here has a clarity and texture similar to Sarashina. The soba noodles were fragrant and delicious. The small bowl of soaked wild vegetables was also delicious with a strong aroma of kosiabura and kogomi❗️ (Original)

The soba noodles went down smoothly and had a fresh flavor. It was a good soba that was not pure white, but had a transparent feel and felt smooth down the throat. Tempura is especially recommended. The crunchiness when you bite into it is by far the best. The vegetables have a strong taste, and even if you add salt or soba soup, it's still delicious. The tempura is absolutely delicious, so you should go there just for that. This time I was guided to the second floor of the warehouse, and it was a wonderfully clean warehouse. The tempura is mainly made of vegetables and is light and crispy, making it a good match with the soba noodles. The restaurant is a renovated home and has a nice atmosphere, so you can enjoy a relaxing meal. Parking is available for about 3 cars on the road side and at the front gate. The owner is the only one handling the customer service, cooking, serving food, and taking care of the bill, so it may take some time, so it's best to take your time when you come to the restaurant. Day 2

Northeast side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Mount Azuma-kofuji, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Mausoleum of Uesugi family. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Mount Azuma-kofuji is a popular 1,705-meter-high mountain in Fukushima known for its central crater and stunning panoramic views. Every spring, as the snow melts, it leaves behind the shape of a giant white rabbit on the mountainside, signaling the start of the farming season. The mountain's appealing symmetry and soft conical shape earned it the name Kofuji, meaning 'little Fuji'.
Check the best time for autumn leaves, and you may want to visit around noon where the fog and clouds clear up. The trek up to and around the volcano is a bit difficult, assess your physical ability before attempting the hike.

While in Fukushima, I was recommended to head up mount Azuma-kofuji to enjoy the view. So come the morning, I begin my ascent and instantly was met with fantastic views as I Drove up. Each 300 meters was another great photo spot and view of the area below. Once I reached the resting area at the top, I was greeted with more great views and a fun souvenir shop that second as an educational building. It was a great experience visiting but next time I will need to prepare as the sulfur smell from the active funnels was everywhere below the summit.

So beautiful!!!! There’s paid parking that cost 500 yen for the day. The drive up was gorgeous and once you get there, make sure you climb the steps up to the crater and walk all around the rim. It’s a spectacular view and a once in a lifetime experience that shouldn’t be missed. There is a restaurant and gift shop inside the main building along with toilets both inside and out. We found it easier to go up the left side of the crater and come down the right side and the slope on the right is milder.

Great place for hiking and viewing. The road as well as the parking place can get really crowded in high season. Came back for moon-lit night photography due to the popularity of this spot.

Great intermediate hike. I don’t recommend for first time hikers to solo but you’ll be fine in a group with experienced hikers. You don’t need expensive gear to make it to the top but nice boots and crampons wouldn’t hurt. The views from the top are worth the sweat.

(Translated by Google) This was the only place I requested to go on our family trip. lol Kenshin's armor was incredibly stylish. You can't really appreciate the engraving details unless you see it in person. Maeda Keijiro's armor was lightweight and had a ninja-like appearance. It was also incredibly rare to see the armor of Uesugi Norimasa, who bestowed the Uesugi surname on young Kenshin, still known as Nagao. Honest samurai protect honest nobles, and honest nobles back honest samurai. The complementary relationship between Kenshin and Norimasa is deeply moving. The stone lantern, reminiscent of the Mannento Pagoda, seems to boast the military readiness and obedience of the Yonezawa Uesugi clan, even in the Reiwa era. I had the impression that it was a museum run by an individual, but when I looked into it later, I discovered that it started out as a private museum that displays the materials that the first director, Zensuke Miyasaka, spent his life collecting. There are many armors on display, including those of Uesugi Kenshin, Kagekatsu, and Naoe Kanetsugu, but the chief among them is the armor of Maeda Keiji. The bright red armor is really cool. When I visited, a special exhibition called ``The Uesugi Vassals' Armor Exhibition'' was being held, and the armor of famous vassals such as Onikojima Yataro was also on display. There are also exhibits such as folding screens and matchlock guns. At first, I didn't include it in my travel plans as I didn't even know about the museum's existence, but I happened to see a poster of it at Yonezawa Station and decided to visit it. As a result, it was a very correct answer. I am humbled by the enthusiasm of the first director, who personally amassed so many items. Rinsenji Temple, also known as Kasugayama Rinsenji, serves as the ancestral temple for the Uesugi family. This Buddhist temple houses various tombs, including those of Sentoin, the older sister of Uesugi Kenshin; Otoyo no Kata, Uesugi Yozan's concubine; and Naoe Kanetsugu. These individuals have gained prominence through their depiction in NHK's Taiga drama "Tenchijin".
(Translated by Google) This Soto Zen temple was originally located in Takada, Echigo. The temple was founded by the 11th Soto Zen master, the Imperially-given Soyu Daiko Zen master Don'ei Eo, descended from the founder of the Soto sect, Dogen, who invited his original master, the Great Abbot Isshu Shoi, to be a monk. The temple's name, "Rinsenji," comes from Lord Nagao Shigekage's posthumous Buddhist name, "Rinsenjidono Jitsukei Shoshin Daikoji." When Lord Uesugi Kenshin inherited the Uesugi clan, he invited the Uesugi clan's patron deity, Kasuga Myojin of Nara, to be enshrined there, and the mountain name was given the name "Kasugayama." Here, from the age of 7 to 14, Lord Kenshin underwent the strict teachings of the renowned monk Tenshitsu Koiku. During the reign of the second lord, Lord Kagekatsu, the Uesugi clan was transferred to Yonezawa via Aizu. It then moved to its current location in Yonezawa in 1617. It was founded by Nagao Yoshikage (deputy governor of Echigo), grandfather of Nagao Kagetora (later Uesugi Kenshin), on the 17th anniversary of his father, Shigekage, as a family temple for generations of the Nagao clan. After the Uesugi clan took power, Rinsen-ji Temple was moved to Yonezawa during the reign of the second Uesugi, Kagekatsu. Since then, it has remained highly revered by the Nagao and Uesugi families to this day. The temple grounds are home to the graves of generations of Uesugi wives and children, as well as the tombs of Naoe Kanetsugu and his wife (prefecturally designated), Takeda Nobumasa (the sixth son of Shingen, prefecturally designated), and other notable figures, including senior Uesugi vassals, gunsmiths, and scholars. The garden, known as one of Yonezawa's three most famous gardens, and the temple gate associated with the famous chief retainer Takemata Totsuna, all speak volumes of the temple's history. Within the temple, numerous calligraphy works, including the original writings of the founder Zen master, as well as handwritings by Kenshin, Kagekatsu, Yozan, and Naoe Kanetsugu, as well as numerous temple treasures, are carefully preserved and passed down. The Mausoleum of the Uesugi family is a burial ground located in Japan. It is the final resting place for members of the influential Uesugi family, who played a significant role in Japanese history during the Edo period. The mausoleum consists of several tombs and monuments built in traditional Japanese architectural style with intricate details, surrounded by beautiful gardens and ponds.
(Translated by Google) This mausoleum enshrines the 15 generations of the Uesugi family since Kenshin Uesugi. When I visited over 20 years ago, I missed the 5pm mark and could only view it from the outside, but my wish finally came true. Silence enveloped the mausoleum, and as I walked through the main street flanked by large cedar trees, I found Kenshin's mausoleum directly in front of me, with the mausoleums of past heads of the family on either side. The wooden mausoleum has a simple feel, but its construction exudes the majesty of the Uesugi family. What I felt when I visited this place was how proud the people of Yonezawa are of the Uesugi. Although the mausoleum is a national historic site, it is managed by the city, and the people working at the reception desk and other areas were local volunteers. It was a place that made me realize how much the Uesugi family has always put the people first in their governance, and that this spirit is still carried on today. There were many warlords during the Sengoku period, but I don't think there is any other warlord who is as beloved and revered by the local people as this one. It's a place I recommend visiting, along with Kasugayama in the distant Joetsu region.

You can also walk from Nishi-Yonezawa on the Yonesaka Line. There is a parking lot. Previously, mausoleums were built alternately on both sides, with the second lord, Kagekatsu, at the center. Later, when Kenshin's remains, which had been enshrined in the main keep of Yonezawa Castle, were moved to the Uesugi family mausoleum in 1876, the current landscape of mausoleums lined up in an orderly fashion with Kenshin at the center was born. Walking along the quiet, solemn approach surrounded by cedar trees, you will feel a dignified atmosphere as you come across flags bearing "Bi," symbolizing the Uesugi family, and "Ryu," representing Kenshin. In the noiseless silence, the chirps of birds and the guide's message echo. Beginning with Lord Takayama, burials were conducted in the ground, and it is interesting to note that the mausoleums of subsequent lords are different from those before. (Translated by Google) This was my first time here, but I've become a big fan of Yoshitsune Yaki❗️ There really isn't any lamb smell, and the appetite-boosting flavor can be enjoyed with or without the special spicy miso. The smoked daikon potato salad also makes a great snack, and my wife praised it highly, and it was great to be able to compare the taste of Juyondai. If I go to Yamagata, this is a restaurant I'd like to visit again😊 A reservation is essential♪ (I called back when the restaurant had calmed down a bit) (Original)

An additional serving is 1200 yen, which is good value for money😍 The fried lamb side dish was also delicious! After finishing the shabu-shabu, I wanted to eat just one serving of yakiniku shoulder, and although I felt bad about it, I asked, and they kindly prepared it for me! The shoulder is also soft and delicious - don't overcook it! This time, I had 3 servings of shabu-shabu, fried lamb, smoked daikon potato salad, choregi salad, Genghis Khan shoulder, grapefruit juice, cola float It was about 9000 yen for two people♪ I recommend the shabu-shabu😋 Thank you to the staff for listening to my whim🙏 (Original)

Nestled in the charming Onogawa Onsen area of Yonezawa City, Ryuge Diner offers a unique dining experience that combines delicious ramen with the enchanting winter scenery. The highlight of this eatery is its proximity to impressive kamakura—traditional snow huts—where visitors can enjoy their meals inside these cozy structures during the colder months. Guests rave about dishes like bean sprout ramen and nameko miso ramen, both featuring rich flavors that warm you up from within.

I wanted to eat somewhere warm, so I decided to eat inside the cafeteria. I ordered the bean sprout ramen, which most of the customers around me were eating. delicious! Light soy sauce soup with curly thin noodles! It was my favorite. Next time I'd like to wear a little more clothes and eat at Kamakura Inn. Thank you for the meal. (Translated by Google) This restaurant is located in Onogawa Onsen, Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture. During the winter, we also serve as a delivery service to the Kamakura village of Onogawa Onsen. ◼️Menu I received ・Mame bean sprout ramen ・Yonezawa Ramen 2025.2 In Onogawa Onsen, during the winter months, kamakura are set up throughout the town, and events are held where you can enjoy delivered ramen inside. Today, it is finally decided. When we arrived at Onogawa Onsen, we found three kamakura huts set up in the plaza, and they were full of people enjoying the delivered ramen. The shop across the road from where the kamakura is located is Ryuka. When I asked the staff about using the kamakura, they told me that once the kamakura was empty, I would go inside and use my phone to order food by following the delivery ordering instructions provided. At that time, tell them your kamakura number and menu. By the way, when using Kamakura, 500 yen per adult will be added to the ramen price. If there is one child and two adults, an additional 1,000 yen will be added to the ramen price. Payment will be made in cash when the food arrives. We also secured a kamakura, went inside, and started delivering food using our mobile phones. It's strange to order food over the phone even though there's a restaurant right in front of you. I ordered as above. The kamakura has a solid and thick structure, and due to the recent heavy snowfall, it has a circular shape, and even more snow has piled up on top of it. Perhaps due to the warm weather today, some of the snow has melted and water droplets are falling in some places. Inside the Kamakura, there is a smell of ramen left by previous customers, but it's not that dirty, but the tables and chairs are sticky, probably due to water droplets and juices left behind. There seemed to be a shortage of supplies such as table wipes, and I wish there were more. I treated it with my own wet tissue. After waiting about 20 minutes after placing my order, a person from the shop in front of me delivered the food. They will go inside the kamakura and deliver it to you, and you will pay on the spot. The food is served wrapped in plastic wrap, as if it were for delivery, and carefully removed to prevent the juices from spilling out. [Bean sprout ramen] This ramen is unique to Onogawa and is topped with bean sprouts grown using Onogawa Onsen's special hot spring water. It is a long bean sprout with beans, and its unusual appearance and crunchy texture are interesting, and it tastes great when mixed with noodles. It comes with 2 slices of roast pork, crunchy menma, and a hot spring egg unique to hot springs. The choice of ingredients that can only be found in Onogawa Onsen is great. The noodles are of course the thin curly noodles that are typical of Yonezawa ramen, and the soup is a gentle, sweet soup made from chicken bones. It seems that pepper is sprinkled from the beginning, and the food progresses, but it seems that children need a little consideration. My child didn't pay any attention to it and ate it. When the hot spring egg is cracked, a thick, thick yolk oozes out, which is then scooped out and given to the child along with the lotus flower. The situation of eating ramen inside a kamakura probably lifted your spirits, and it was really delicious. The preservation of the kamakura depends on the weather and is expected to end around the second half of February. There is also a light installed inside the kamakura, and there is a switch behind the light at the entrance. If you don't know about this, you won't know, so the restaurant delivering the food will add it to you if they notice. I was happy because I was able to fulfill one of my long-held dreams of eating ramen at Kamakura in Onogawa Onsen. Maintaining the cleanliness inside the kamakura is up to the customers who use it, so I guess it's left up to the manners of the customers. After eating, the garbage and utensils are brought down to the rack outside the kamakura. If they were going to charge a fee to use the kamakura, I thought they should have provided more table cleaning services. I may be busy, but I would like to ask you a favor. Thank you for the meal.

Ringoen Yonezawa is a delightful dining spot in Yonezawa City, perfect for those looking to indulge in local cuisine without the lunchtime rush. Arriving before noon allows you to enjoy their offerings at a leisurely pace. The highlight here is undoubtedly the Yonezawa beef double lunch, featuring A5 rank meat that showcases exquisite marbling and flavor—definitely a treat for any meat lover!
(Translated by Google) Used for sightseeing in Yonezawa City I came in before 12:00, before it got crowded during lunch time. I ordered Yonezawa beef double lunch (¥1880 excluded) Since it was cheap, I waited for it to be served, wondering if it was a mix of Wagyu beef other than Yonezawa beef, or if the quantity was extremely small... The meat provided is A5 rank meat, which can be seen from the color and marbling, and is definitely Yonezawa beef. And I was surprised by the amount! If you get this much A5 rank meat, wouldn't it normally cost twice as much? And the ribs were extremely delicious. There was also a mega size above the W, but the W was just right (the rice was also a regular size, so it was extra 100 yen for a large size). I'm very satisfied Other lunch menu items are also attractive and value-for-money (photo) During the meal, my family and I started talking about how much cheaper it was than Anrakutei (a chain restaurant in the Kanto area). It's a level you can go to if you're in your hometown. I envy the citizens of Yonezawa. Bekoya is a restaurant that offers high-grade Yonezawa beef prepared in various ways, such as yakiniku, sukiyaki, shabu shabu, and grilled steak. The establishment has a simple yet elegant ambiance with tall windows. Customers have praised the deliciousness of the Yonezawa beef and appreciated the attentive service provided by the staff. Some diners recommend making reservations in advance to secure a semi-private room for an enhanced dining experience.
APRIL 2023 The restaurant serves Yonezawa beef cooked in different methods including yakiniku, sukiyaki, shabu shabu and grilled steak. Reserved in advance for sukiyaki and got a semi private room which was nice, really enjoyed the traditional dining atmosphere. I had the highest grade set meal which was a very good deal, much cheaper compared to eating wagyu in more populated cities such as Tokyo and Osaka. Yonezawa beef was extremely marbled and delicious, it did not feel too fatty, perfect pairing with the sweet sukiyaki sauce and the vegetables. Also the service was great, the staff prepared the pot with the ingredients, explained how Yonezawa sukiyaki is different to Kanto sukiyaki and showed me how to best cook and enjoy the wagyu and vegetables; very friendly and welcoming.

Excellent and delicious Yonezawa Beef. I had the Grilled BBQ Yonezawa Beef. Even though it was pricey, it was worth it. This is charcoal style BBQ and it does taste better when using charcoal rather than gas. The staff here were nice and the restaurant is on the fancier side. The only minor complaint was the small kids in the next booth were being noisy and playing too much but of course, the staff would not say anything. Other than that, it was definitely worth it to come here and enjoy Yonezawa Beef.

Nature & Parks
Naoetsutsumi Park, known for its iconic "love" helmet, was constructed by the renowned Kanetsugu Naoe as part of a hydraulic engineering project under the patronage of feudal lord Ieyasu Tokugawa. In this endeavor, Uesugi Kagekatsu, another influential figure, reduced the seal from 1.2 million stones in Aizu to 300,000 in Yonezawa.
(Translated by Google) The embankment (nozura-zumi) from the time of Lord Naoe Kanetsugu still remains. The riverbed has been turned into a park, and the grass is neatly cut and maintained. There is a parking lot, and it is also a great course for walking dogs. If you want to relax and gaze out at the river, this is a good place to rest. It is moving to think that Lord Naoe Kanetsugu also fought hard in this place. If you are a fan of the Sengoku period, it is worth stopping by here. (Translated by Google) My family has been using it for imoni parties and children's play areas for a long time. It's been a while since I've had an imoni party, BBQ, and petit camp. I love the spacious surroundings of the park, where I can see my favorite Mt. Azuma and feel liberated. Parking lots, promenades, pavilions, water holes, and restrooms are located in three long parks: north, center, and south. In particular, the central parking lot is used as a rest area during work. However, the toilets are old and difficult to use, and there are steps to get down from the park to the embankment site, making it inconvenient. I have no choice. In the past, Naoe Kanetsugu constructed a large-scale embankment to control the flooding of the Mogami River. There are some children's play equipment and vending machines in the center, so it's recommended for a walk. (Translated by Google) We arrived early on a spring equinox Sunday at 11:00 a.m. There were only a few customers, and we were the third group to sit comfortably at a large table. I remember eating at this restaurant once, half a century ago, but the soba noodles were thick, hard, and chunky, and I don't think they were very appetizing for a child's palate. Today, I ordered a plate of soba noodles and a tempura platter, and my wife ordered nameko soba noodles. They arrived in about 18 minutes. The noodles were shiny and grainy, and looked delicious. I tried them without the soba sauce, but they were fragrant, easy to slurp, and very delicious. The condiments available were green onions, wasabi paste, and grated maple leaves, but I ate them with just the green onions, which was also very nice. It was the first delicious soba I'd had in a long time. There was shichimi pepper on the table, so I added some and finished my meal in no time. The noodle sauce had a light dashi flavor and a strong kare (seaweed) flavor, which I liked. The tempura platter was crispy and the shrimp was crispy all the way to the tail. My wife also said the nameko soba was delicious, the best she'd had in Yonezawa. I'm sure tastes vary greatly, but the soba here was to my liking. I'll definitely come back. The portions may be small for big eaters, so ask for a large portion. The tempura had a crispy batter, which is unusual for me personally! It was satisfying to eat ( ´∀`) The parking lot can accommodate about 10 cars. Please note that it tends to be crowded during lunchtime \(^o^)/ (Original)

(Translated by Google) At first glance, I thought it was just an ordinary soba restaurant, but it turned out to be quite delicious. I ordered the popular board soba, and the flavor of the soba spreads throughout my mouth with the thick noodles. I was curious about the other menu items, so I ordered the summer-only chilled chicken soba, which also had a good dashi soup and was very delicious. It was a restaurant I wanted to eat at when I stopped by Yamagata again. The price was reasonable and it was very good. Ramen restaurant
Yamatoya is a well-established local eatery that has limited parking space for approximately five vehicles, making it advisable to avoid bringing large cars. Upon entering the restaurant, guests will notice a slightly elevated area on the left side where they can enjoy their meal at two-seat tables before moving on to larger tables and chairs. The menu primarily consists of homemade crispy noodles, which are highly popular among locals. Each dish's soup boasts unique flavors that diners may be inclined to explore.

I wonder if everyone parks at Uesugi Shrine or somewhere like that. The restaurant is small, with three tables and two raised tatami seats, and it seems they won't let even one customer share a table. It also seemed like there was quite a wait time for a ramen restaurant. I ordered a large bowl of pork ramen. However, the pork was a bit crumbly, and the soup had a hint of dried sardines in the aftertaste, which I didn't really like. The noodles were thin and curly, but delicious. However, I went on a weekday lunchtime, and there were two or three groups waiting outside, so I guess it's popular with locals. (Translated by Google) I think this is a high-quality Yonezawa ramen restaurant. However, I ate here about 4 or 5 years ago, and while the noodles used to be beautiful, translucent, and super thin and curly, I think they've gotten a little thicker (they're now standard Yonezawa ramen noodles). The soup also seems a little richer. Both are very small changes, but the balance between the noodles and soup was divine and perfect before. Still, I recommend this restaurant more than the main branch (which doesn't serve traditional Yonezawa ramen) or Yamadaimae (where the taste changed about 30 years ago).

The noodles are the extremely thin, curly noodles that are unique to Yonezawa, and the soup is flavored with bonito broth, so it's likely to be a matter of personal preference. I found it a little salty with a strong soy sauce flavor, perhaps because they used too much seasoning. The steak house, Organ Steak House, offers a delectable hand-kneaded hamburger made with Yonezawa beef weighing 180g for the price of 1200 yen. Additionally, they serve a mouthwatering stew made from Yonezawa beef sinew priced at 550 yen. The restaurant provides an irresistible dining experience with its rich flavors and affordable prices.

The owner's desire to provide good quality food at low prices really hits home. I still remember my mother always saying that the best steak restaurant in Yonezawa is Organ. (Translated by Google) Mount Nishi-Azuma, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, stands at 2,035 meters. This is the most beautiful of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains I've ever visited. If you choose the right season and weather, you can witness a dazzling display of crimson maple leaves and a vibrant array of colors. Driving from Yamagata City early in the morning, it takes about an hour to reach the Yumoto Cable Car Station at the foot of the mountain. The station opens at 8:00 AM, and the round-trip ticket is 4,500 yen. The large gondola takes about 10 minutes to the Tengendai Plateau station, where you transfer to a small double ski lift. After three transfers, it takes about 40 minutes to reach the trailhead. The trailhead is already 1,800 meters above sea level, and the cable car alone ascends 900 meters. The scenery is breathtaking. The initial path is a narrow forest path, but after about half an hour, you'll reach the mountain ridge, where crimson and yellow maple leaves burst forth, and the expansive view unfolds. The gentle ascent and descent is truly relaxing, reminiscent of a scene from Howl's Moving Castle. There aren't many forks along the way, mostly on wooden plank roads. After about half an hour, you'll reach a spring where water flows out. From there, you'll begin climbing a rocky path, and after about another half-hour, you'll reach Brahma Rock. The scenery here is beautiful, with a sea of giant rocks. After about 10 minutes, you'll reach the fork in the road at the shrine, where you can choose to make an O-shaped path back and forth. After about 20 minutes, you'll reach the summit. There's no triangulation point at the summit, just a signpost and pillars nestled in the forest. The area isn't very large. Further up the mountain, you can make an O-shaped path back and forth, but since we were pressed for time this time, we chose to make the same path back and forth. After descending, we visited the shrine again. Most people took the O-shaped path, so we didn't stay long before descending. The spring water after descending was refreshing, perfect for washing off the dirt from climbing the rocks. After descending, we ended our satisfying journey with a thrilling ride on the ski lift, which felt like a swing in the sky. Excluding the cable car, the round trip takes about 3.5 hours, covering a distance of about 3.5 kilometers and a total of about 400 meters. If the weather is good, it is a very relaxing and pleasant hike to Baimingshan. Ski resort
Tengendaikogen Ski Area, located near Shirabu Onsen in the Yonezawa area, offers a high-altitude skiing experience with excellent snow quality. The wide slopes cater to intermediate skiers and provide comfortable skiing opportunities. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Yamagata, including the Asahi Mountain Range and Mt. Gassan. Even during spring, the quality of snow remains ideal for skiing. However, strong winds may affect operations at the upper lift.
I visited Tengendai Ski Area in early March, 2023. Despite the unusually warm weather for the time of year (15 degrees Celsius in Yonezawa city), we were still able to enjoy a moderate cover of powder snow up at Tengendai. Truly powder paradise! We also had the place mostly to ourselves on a Tuesday. Facilities are simple with three lifts and two restaurants, but the slopes are wide and have enough variation to enjoy a full day of skiing. The ski area is also very easy to access on the ropeway and ski pass + rentals can be purchased easily and quickly without reservation. Staff are also very friendly - the staff in the restaurant left us a welcome note with our food, and one of the ski instructors ended up personally driving us back to Yonezawa station (40min) at the end of the day! Highly recommend!

Famous for its 100% powder snow in the winter. The ski season can last until the end of April, possibly start of May. Lots of Yonezawa locals use this resort so it feels friendly. A very good and well established ski school with friendly teachers. If you get a Level 1 SAJ grading, your name can go on a board at the bottom gondola station.

Great snow and very friendly people! The slope is quite long and has good variety with both steep parts and more beginner parts. You can also ski off-pist some parts of the ski area.

(Translated by Google) Today was my first debut on this slope, and I was extremely lucky to have perfect conditions. As you would expect from a high altitude, the snow quality is excellent, and each barn is spacious and well-maintained! Besides, the group of monsters on the frost-covered trees was a sight to behold🤩 Of course, Zao may be more amazing, but being able to see such a spectacular view with a one-day ticket of ¥4,400 (senior) is just amazing (Zao is inbound price) And I can't reach it anymore 😭). There are a lot of things that can go wrong, such as the parking lot being small and separated at the bottom of the slope, and the lifts being slow for long periods of time in pairs, but if you hit such favorable conditions on your first visit, I don't feel like deducting points at all. No. I would like to check out the ski slope information on Weather News and go again on a day with favorable conditions.

(Translated by Google) The quality of the snow is much better than Nekoma in Fukushima Prefecture, and even though I usually only ride on wet snow, the board runs so smoothly that I feel like I'm getting better at sliding. You can enjoy it all day long by carving in the well-maintained areas, flying around the edges and undulations, and creating style. I think the Yunohira course, which is said to be used for descending the mountain, is a style dojo. I want to skate here in a cool and tasteful way. The problem is the parking lot, and how close to the gondola station can I park my car? The further you move away from the gondola station, the steeper the slope you will have to climb, making it difficult to climb in ski boots and too harsh for families with children.

(Translated by Google) This is a ski resort whose slopes extend north in a straight line to Mt. Nishi-Azuma, the highest peak in the Azuma Mountain Range. Surprisingly, Tengendai Ski Resort is the only ski resort on the southern border between Yamagata and Fukushima prefectures that has a northern slope. Although it is easy to access from Yonezawa city, it has a somewhat local feel as Zao Onsen ski resort is located to the north. It has a simple structure, with a ropeway access from the foot of the mountain and three vertical lifts, and the course is vertically long to follow the lifts. Even if you are skating in a group, it will be difficult to get separated, and even if you do get separated, you will be able to quickly regroup. Although it is not a particularly high ski resort at an altitude of about 1,800m, it is attractive because it is inland, so the temperature is low, and it has one of the highest snowfalls of any ski resort in Japan, with over 750cm of snowfall this season. If you visit on a snowy day during the high season, skis with a center diameter of less than 100mm will be hard to find. You should come prepared with proper equipment and powder running techniques. If you're lucky, you might even see diamond dust. It is also a famous place for snowy mountain climbing, so many mountaineers visit here. Please keep in mind that they will be driving slowly when getting on and off the lift. When encountering a climbing group, the lift will intermittently operate in waves, going from normal to low speed to normal to low speed. If you get motion sickness easily, don't forget to take motion sickness medicine. Shirabu Falls, located near Nishiya and just a brief hike away, is an unmissable natural attraction in the area. The trail leading to the falls can be slippery at times but not overly challenging, so it is advisable to wear sturdy footwear. During September, the path is adorned with vibrant wildflowers while the waterfall itself boasts a strong rush of water. With its picturesque setting still untouched by human intervention, Shirabu Falls attracts only a handful of visitors.
A short walk from the hot spring inns in Shirabu Onsen, this is a must-see if you visit. A new staircase was recently added to make it easier to access.

Went in September and the path was lined with wildflowers and the waterfall had a powerful flow. Located in an unspoiled natural setting with very few other visitors.

If you purchase a parent-child ticket, you can purchase a one-day ticket for the price of a four-hour ticket, which is an exceptional offer. There is only one pair lift. When you get off, you will see a wide single barn. The ups and downs make it enjoyable for intermediate and advanced skiers, and the wide turns are perfect for beginners to practice. The price, course, and accessibility are very good, but the parking lots are so scattered that it's hard to find them. With this, I lost one ☆. The food was delicious and great quality too. The service was good. I recommend the hamburger, it was superb. It's worth the wait if there is a line. This place is not a fast-food joint, if you're looking for a quick bite, there are plenty of fast-food restaurants nearby for you to go eat at. Quality comes with time and patience.

(Translated by Google) Lunch during the trip Since I was in Yonezawa, I had to try Yonezawa beef... Even so, I had already eaten beef skewers and beef bowls a few times, so this time I decided to try hamburger steaks, and after googling, I went to a restaurant that I had seen featured on a TV program called "Taxi Driver." Being a Monday lunch, it wasn't very busy. I ordered a regular portion of hamburger steak and rice with demi-glace sauce, and it arrived in about 15 minutes. It was cooked just right and was delicious. It was a masterpiece that really let you feel the meatiness of Yonezawa beef. I recommend it (^^)/ (Original)

(Translated by Google) I went there on a weekday lunchtime. Since I arrived a little after opening time, there were about four groups of people who hadn't gotten their food yet. I waited about 50 minutes before my food finally arrived. Depending on the timing, it might be best to go there with plenty of time. The hamburger steak is made from 100% Yonezawa beef, yet it's tender and juicy. It's cooked to a fluffy perfection, making it a great choice for rice. ^_^ If you like the flavors of gorgonzola and blue cheese, you'll love this hamburger 🍔. ^_^ The accompanying fries were also crispy and delicious. ^_^ If there hadn't been a long wait, I'd probably give it four stars.

Japanese restaurant
Yonezawa Beef Tokiwa is a traditional restaurant known for serving high-quality Yonezawa beef. The restaurant operates its own butcher on the first floor, ensuring top-notch meat quality. Visitors praise the attentive and friendly service staff. The menu features delectable options like Sukiyaki and steak, both highly acclaimed for their amazing flavors. Guests are also impressed by the unique taste of the sukiyaki.
A meat shop with more than 100 years of experience. We eat shabu-shabu style. There are 2 types of dipping sauces. We order 2 styles of meat. The meat is soft and tastes very good. The service staff gave very good advice. We like this restaurant. Must come back to use the service again.
Kritanan S — Google review
This restaurant was an amazing experience. The host Kato cooked at our table and served up delicious sukiyaki from the finest grades of Yonezawa beef. Kato-san spoke to us in English and explained everything we were about to eat. Cooked to perfection, I'd definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone.

Date of enjoyment 12/04/25. Drove all the way to Yonezawa to try their famous beef, there’s not many restaurants that is open before 5pm except Tokiwa. They have a butcher downstairs and restaurant upstairs which is always a good sign. We had no reservation and we instant afforded a Japanese style table where we sit on tatami mats with shoes off. Instantly ordered the sukiyaki and charcoal grill for all things Yonezawa beef. Rhe quality of the sukiyaki was amazing, combined with the egg as a dipping sauce is truly an experience you can never get sick of. Over to the charcoal grill, this is real charcoal they use and the beef cuts are slightly fatty but they less fatty cuts are truly amazing experience itself. Words cannot express the sensation of fulfilment and joy from the first bite of such flavours and textures. This is the peak of beef enjoyment and the Japanese has mastered it in many ways. We also ordered the salad which was essentially a mixture of fruits and leafs that is as fresh as it was just picked from the garden. Finishing the meal with rice and side condiments really made the trip to Yonezawa a worthwhile venture and experience to be remembered and savoured. Tokiwa also has another beach in Yamagata right where Daiwa hotel is, this however does not have the traditional feel to it but also a great way to enjoy their produce.

Yonezawa beef is one of the top three beefs of Japan, it literally melts in your mouth. Here, one can choose from shabu-shabu, sukiyaki, yakiniku, or grilled steak. They also offer side dishes like beef tartar and beef sushi. Service was impeccable.
Eugene W — Google review
We pre-ordered the Yonazawa beef yakiniku set for two online before our visit and were really surprised by its huge portion! It would be an excellent choice for anyone who loves a real meat feast.
Christo A — Google review
When travelling to Yamagata, it is said that you must try Yonezawa Beef. So we had to make a stop at Yonezawa just to try their beef. While searching for a suitable restaurant in google, Tokiwa always seems to come up at the top search. So we decided to just give it a try. Initially we ordered 2 sets of Sukiyaki and 1 set of Yakiniku for our group of 5, just to test as the price was fairly expensive. But we ended up adding 3 more sets of meat, and 2 sets of their Beef Tartare. Their Sukiyaki uses their own recipe where they add miso, and it definitey elevates the taste to make it more umami than the usual sweetness. I would recommend to just go with the Matsu and skip the Take. The Tokusen has not much discernible difference from the Matsu. The Beef Tartare is a must to order. The beef definitely deserves to be there in the top 3 of Japanese Wagyu Beef. Service is good and fast as expected for Japan standards. They can only speak very limited English, but there is always google translate and they were very patient with us. Did not use the toilet.

I highly recommend eating here. The rib eye melted in my mouth and tasted amazing. Now I need to work out how I can cook some steak in the rental kei van camper so I can come back to the butchers on the ground floor.

I was in search of traditional restaurant that serves Yonezawa beef and found this place. They run their own butcher with great quality Yonezawa beef also on the first floor. The service staff there was super nice right when we arrive and very attentive and personal. We ordered both Sukiyaki and steak and both are amazing. Especially my friend was SUPER impressed with the quality of steak. The flavor of sukiyaki was definitely unique and fun too. I got some meat and curry to go as Omiyage. Definitely recommended

Nestled in the charming town of Yonezawa, Nadera is a delightful soba restaurant that exudes an inviting, nostalgic ambiance reminiscent of visiting a beloved grandparent's home. There seems to be a parking lot in front of the building. Well, it was raining and cold that day, so I ordered my first ``Kamo Nabe Soba Ume'' and my usual ``Kaimochi Half''. Kamo Nabe Soba is cooked on fire, so you can enjoy the soba noodles piping hot without getting too hot. Kaimochi appears after a while! Nice exterior of an old folk house. It's like coming to grandma's house and it's very relaxing. I've been here several times, but this time it was my first time to try Naderaoroshi Umemori and half of my favorite ``Kaimochi''. The junior I guided ordered Naderaoroshi and Kaimochi regular. First caressing. The grated radish and natto are very refreshing and go well with country soba and are delicious! My favorite ``Kaimochi'' is really fluffy, and with the salty natto soup and sweet black sesame sauce, I can eat it forever. After eating here, I have eaten soba gaki elsewhere, but this one is by far the best in terms of price and taste. I definitely recommend eating them together. Even my junior, who rarely smiles, was smiling at how delicious it was. I always love pickles too, they are really delicious. This is how much I want them to sell. I'm also thankful that I can buy fresh cucumbers for 10 yen each (*^ー^)ノ♪ I think it's difficult to install an air conditioner because it's an old folk house.
