Hitoyoshi in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Hitoyoshi, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Hitoyoshi is a small riverside city known for its hot springs and scenic setting along the clear Kuma River, one of Japan’s three fastest-flowing rivers. You can visit the atmospheric ruins of Hitoyoshi Castle and the nearby samurai residences, which hint at its past as a castle town. Aoi Aso Shrine, with its distinctive vermilion buildings and traditional carvings, is one of the region’s most important historic shrines. The area is also noted for river boating and local specialties such as Kuma shochu, a rice-based distilled spirit produced in the surrounding basin.
With favorites like 鮨の喜多川, Murayama Park, and Izakaya Diner "Shirokiya" Hitoyoshi Station, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like 鮨の喜多川 and Uemura Unagi-ya so you can get the best taste of Hitoyoshi while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Aoi Aso Shrine, located in the charming town of Hitoyoshi in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, is a serene complex of Shinto shrines with traditional thatched roofs and intricate carvings. Dedicated to the ancestral deity of the Aso family, the shrine holds great cultural and spiritual significance in the region as it venerates the god of agriculture and fertility.
A must-visit in Hitoyoshi City. A very beautiful, well-maintained shrine.
Jess L — Google review
Apparently quite a famous and old shrine. We waited about 15 minutes to pray on Jan 5. There's a modern little museum attached for an extra ¥500. There are toilets as well. The thatched roof is interesting.
Douglas A — Google review
Visited on a scorching summer weekend — the heat was intense. There were a few tourists around, most came to pray quickly and left right after. I didn’t stay long either, just enough time to take some photos. The shrine has a beautiful traditional structure, with a unique thatched roof (like woven hay — not something you see every day!) and a striking red torii gate at the entrance. It feels historic and sacred, even in the heat. Would love to come back when it’s cooler to take my time exploring.

Hitoyoshi Railroad Museum MOZOCA Station 868 is a charming attraction located in Hitoyoshi, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. This museum offers a delightful experience for families with young children, featuring a variety of train-related activities and exhibits. Visitors can enjoy the excitement of riding an electric mini-train that travels through the building, as well as engaging in other activities such as operating toy crossing gates and pedaling a trike on rails upstairs.
Super cool little train museum/park aimed at small children. We took the excursion steam train down from Kumamoto. The kids were in train overload :-) They have an awesome little electric mini-train you can pay to ride that drives right through the middle of the building. Our kids kept hanging out waiting for it to come "back to the station" so they could work the toy crossing gates. There are a few activities to keep them occupied including a pedal trike on rails upstairs.

The place is full of SL train history in Hitoyoshi. Kids will enjoy model trains.

When you enter the main hall, there is a ghost hanging scroll on the left. Enter the main hall, go down the passage on the right, go down the stairs, enter the mansion next door, and go to the left to see the ``Pond that seems to be haunted''. I prepared some coins and put them in for charity. Also, the madam of the temple answered the phone calls, the young lady showed us how to get to the pond, and the chief priest was also very kind. In addition, you should definitely watch the information video on the left side of the main hall. After seeing that, I went to donate money again. I stopped by on a whim, but I'm glad I went. Thank you very much 💖 I appreciate it. There are also city buses, so I recommend taking advantage of them. However, there aren't many buses to Kagoshima. Rather than returning to Kagoshima by express bus from Kagoshima, it might be better to go up to Shin-Yatsushiro or somewhere similar. According to the guidebook, you won't be able to catch the Hibiscus bus departing at night. You won't make the 12:00 PM bus. If you've read the "Dan Doon" chapter, I recommend going there. The ghost paintings and the haunted pond are a must-see. The priest's explanation is about 10 minutes long, so I recommend watching it. Rather than rushing around, I recommend sitting in front of the pond or on a tatami mat for even a minute or two in meditation. They also have prayer beads and temple seals. It is also known as the Ghost Temple. ************ The following is an excerpt from the temple's pamphlet. In 1877 (Meiji 10), during the Seinan War, Saigo Takamori was defeated at Tabaruzaka and retreated. He set up his headquarters at this temple and remained there for 33 days. However, due to the advancing Imperial Army, he retreated across Kakuto Pass on May 29th, protected by the troops of sniper commander Ikegami Shiro. The temple was completely burned down during the Hitoyoshi Street Battle on June 1st. The main hall was rebuilt in 1891. Due to its aging, the main hall was rebuilt as it is today in 2017. Murayama Park is a charming hilltop space that offers picturesque views of the now-inoperative Hitoyoshi Station, especially during the cherry blossom season in spring. It's a great spot for relaxation and leisure activities, with an observation deck, playground equipment, and eight tennis courts. The park's elevated plateau provides opportunities for walking or jogging amidst its ups and downs. Visitors can also enjoy a peaceful lunch or consider it as a potential location for day camps.
Beautiful park with an observation deck. If walking, there's an incline to reach the park. I was lucky enough to spot a swallow's nest during my visit - so beautiful! Since the flooding in Hitoyoshi 4 years ago, temporary housing has been built in the park. However, this doesn't take away the appeal.

All the food was delicious and the atmosphere was nice. The menu is reasonably priced and I would like to go there for lunch next time. Thank you for the meal😊 (Original)

(Translated by Google) I stopped by for dinner as I was staying at a nearby hotel for work.As for customer service, I was first shown to a tatami room, but I have a chronic illness or should I say lower back pain...I had to travel by car for a long time, so if I could, I would use a sunken kotatsu. When I asked him about it, he didn't look very kind...Even when I saw the staff checking on him, he gave me a sour look...I guess it can't be helped since you can't tell from his appearance that he has back pain. When I saw it, it was almost empty, so I was hoping that I could do it, but rather than being guided to the counter with a smile, I was able to spend my time reluctantly! As for the prices, I guess the fish is expensive at this time of year due to the typhoon, and there were several items at market prices! When it comes to customer service and food...Personally, I felt it was rather expensive this time. I'm glad that the storefront and interior are spacious☆... As for the food, the sashimi was fresh and delicious 😋 Because it's made directly from the fish tank ❣️ The tempura platter is average. When it comes to tuna sushi, there are tendons and it comes in just one piece. . As for the miso soup, it was red, but Mitsuba was dry. . As for the alcohol, I ordered a dry sake, but personally, the lineup was sweet. I only come to Hitoyoshi a few times a year for work, so finding a place to eat is something I look forward to 🥰, so this was my first non-chain restaurant, and it was a bittersweet debut lol.

Unagi restaurant
Uemura Unagi-ya is a long-standing restaurant known for its charcoal-grilled eel and rice bowls served in a traditional setting. Despite its popularity, the spacious eatery can accommodate up to 60-80 people. Visitors praise the classical ambiance and generous portions of food, making it a worthwhile dining destination. Guests have raved about the perfectly grilled eel with delicious sauce over steamed rice, as well as the crunchy deep-fried eel bones high in calcium.
Has been around for 110 years, just that alone is worth going. The restaurant is very considerate and set up seats for customers to wait. The inside is quite traditional Japanese and interesting. Very friendly service. The eels tasted very fresh, nicely grilled. Sauce was provided separately which means you can personalize the flavor. Enjoyed it.

Really delicious unagi restaurant serving up different styles & dishes. First time trying the pickled unagi & liver and would say that they are an acquired taste not for all, liver has a strong bitter aftertaste which should be a good sake-pairing dish. Do try it if you dare! Definitely recommend the unagi rice sets!

On my way to Kirishima, I stopped by Uemura Unagi-ya (上村うなぎ屋) for lunch as I’ve read so many good reviews about this old Japanese restaurant and it definitely did not disappoint! I ordered an unagi set which was filled with perfectly charcoal-grilled eel, glazed with delicious sauce over hot steamed rice. I also tried their deep-fried eel bones. They were extremely crunchy and high in calcium! Be warned that if you have to wait in line outside of the restaurant, they’ll make you stand in an area which is right next to their kitchen’s exhaust fans. Which can be very smoky!!

Best eel I had. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Natural nice charcoal taste on the eel, with just enough sauce. (Different from other type of unagi I had) I ordered the Unaju set with the liver soup 😋

I came here for dinner, and the wait for a table wasn't long at all. The restaurant is deceptively large. I ordered the small unagidon for 1900 yen, and that was the perfect amount for me. There was a bit of a wait for the food to arrive after ordering, but considering the restaurant is so large and popular that's not so surprising. The food was worth the wait!

It's an incredible place, obviously a superstar for the local people. We came at about 1030 and it's already half full. By the time we left it's full house. This doesn't mean it's a small place. In fact it's among the largest eel restaurant I have ever seen that can house like close to a 60-80 people. The mood is very classical and the quantity is solid. Absolutely a place to visit for all the money worth!

Unagi restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Hitoyoshi, Matsuda Unagi-ya is a must-visit for eel enthusiasts. While many flock to the popular Kamimura Unagi, often facing long waits, Matsuda offers a more relaxed dining experience. On my recent weekend visit during lunch hours, I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of crowds and found ample parking space. The restaurant's spacious and clean interior exudes an old-fashioned charm that adds to its appeal.
probably the best unagi rice ive ever had in my life CASH ONLY honestly we wanted to go to Uemura but they only open for lunch, and we coulnt make it so we came here instead got unagi-don, normal size took about 20-30 minutes for the food to come out and we DEVOURED n finished the meal in 10 minutes super spacious parking lot

(Translated by Google) I had the eel bowl (regular) for 2,300 yen. It came with soup and pickles. When you come to Hitoyoshi, you definitely want to eat eel! It was a regular, so it was just two pieces of eel, but it was very filling and delicious! The outside was crispy and the inside was soft and fluffy, just perfect! The rice was delicious! The grains were well-defined. To survive the heatwave, you need the nutritional benefits of eel 😋 (Original)

(Translated by Google) I visited this long-established eel restaurant, which has been in business for over 100 years. I ordered the unaju and shirayaki, and the unaju was delicious with the savory sauce and the eel cooked to perfection. I dipped the shirayaki in ginger soy sauce, and it was very elegant, and I could really taste the high quality of the eel itself. I've eaten eel many times at famous restaurants in Fukuoka, Yanagawa, and Hitoyoshi, but this was the most delicious I've ever had. I'll definitely be back. If you're looking for a delightful dining experience, Izakaya Diner "Shirokiya" at Hitoyoshi Station is a must-visit. After several years away, I was pleasantly surprised by the exceptional quality of their food menu. Each dish was a treat, with the standout being the limited-time shrimp marinated in soy sauce—an absolute delight! The simple cucumber and cabbage snacks were also perfectly seasoned and added to my overall satisfaction.

Since women tend to get cold easily, I thought it would be best to refrain from going to that place. When my daughter got up from her seat and stood in the hallway, From a young female clerk I was told that there were a lot of customers and they were busy so please don't block the road as it would be a nuisance. Who are you? It was the first time I saw someone say something like that to a customer, and I thought I would never go to a store like this again. There were about 2 or 3 young staff members, but they were all unfriendly. A store is only as good as its customers, so is it okay for the manager and other people to hire such people? I don't think you should say something like that to your daughter, who is only one year old and can't calm down. In that case, wouldn't it be nice if you could give me a private room?
