Museum
The Okutama Water and Green Friendship Hall is a science museum located in Tokyo, Japan. The facility showcases various exhibits that highlight the importance of water conservation and environmental sustainability. Visitors can learn about the history of water management in Tokyo and participate in interactive activities that demonstrate the impact of human behavior on the environment. Additionally, there are displays showcasing animal life native to the region as well as information on renewable energy sources such as solar power.
A wonderful museum near the Okutama Dam with a great view! It’s an excellent spot for sightseeing and even offers a virtual hiking experience using the museum’s facilities. You can also learn about the region and its culture in an engaging way. The cafeteria serves delicious food at reasonable prices. I had the curry udon, it was flavorful, the broth rich, and the noodles perfectly chewy. If you sit by the window, you can enjoy breathtaking scenery while eating. Best of all, admission to the museum is free! Highly recommended as a stop if you’re planning to go hiking or simply strolling around the Okutama Dam. They also have omiyage store, good for buying souvenirs or snacks.

Nice to visit in Autumn. Beautiful red orenge and green leaves. Don't forget to try the products form Wasabi from the souvenir shop.

The museum and building was nice to visit and have lunch. The view from the cafe was beautiful. We took a nice stroll across the dam also. Good spot for a family outing and it was free.

Free and great to visit when you need a reason to get out the house. Walking the dam was great for the dog. Will do it again since I live nearby.

Very beautiful greenery place must visit to enjoy natural view also approach camping. Vegetarians carry your own food there is no restaurant. You will get some groceries like rice, spices, beer and bread etc
Sanket C — Google review
Excellent place for nature lovers. You can enjoy trailing through the small mountains, you can see the Okutama dam that is controlling water flow to the river. Okutama lake itself is very beautiful. You can do rafting to the near Mitsuke station. But need booking in advance. There are not much convenient store and restaurant. So it's better to carry some food.

It's non typical Tokyo's crowd, awesome montain range. For me as a tourist it's better go in winter. To find eternal serenity during winter and maybe hike the peak of Okutama's mountain range. The dam is quite awesome, there's observatory building near dam, to know more information about the area and history.
Silvano H — Google review
It is the driving to this place as well as the views from walking around the dam that makes the visit worthwhile. Should not visit here for much else. Very peaceful and great views. You won't find visible discharges of water.

Lake Okutama is a picturesque man-made reservoir nestled amidst the stunning mountains and verdant forests of Chichibu Tama National Park, making it a popular day trip destination from Tokyo. The area offers various activities such as hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and an information center known as 'Yama-no-Furusato Mura.' Visitors can enjoy camping facilities, log cabins, BBQs, guided hiking tours, and workshops for crafting activities.
We went car camping to stargaze and then woke up early to wait the sunrise, then enjoyed some swan boating on the lake. It was a great way to enjoy the beautiful weather with family.

Nice dam lake with the beautiful views surrounding the lake with the bridges.
Jeck L — Google review
I visited this place on 29 Nov 2024. There were very few tourists. Traveling here is quite limited if you don’t drive, as the area is quite vast. However, there are buses available. I love this place; it’s more beautiful than I could have imagined. But it takes quite a long time to get here and requires several transfers. If you have time, finding accommodation nearby would make the trip less tiring.
Gingger — Google review
Oct. 14, 2024 2nd monday of October. Sports day. From the parking with the toilet head to the dam Cross to the other side, and in the middle of the bridge, there's observatory. Don't miss it! It's worth going to see the dam structure and miniature.
Miyuu — Google review
It is a beautiful lake accessible by train and bus from central Tokyo in about 2.5h. The lake has a serene atmosphere which is very soothing after experiencing busy Tokyo.
Warre Y — Google review
I came here by bus from Okutama JR station. I stopped at Lake Okutama “奥多摩湖”. Firstly, I surprised about the big lake and it’s beautiful deep blue color. Then I climbed the observatory to see the whole scene of the Lake, the Ogouchi dam, the mountains. It was a bit scary to look down from the window but it was a great view. There is a good atmosphere and a beautiful nature here. I was healed so much from my busy days.
Flymt2moon — Google review
Definitely an must visit place if you are Japan. One of the beautiful places I visited. Prefered time to visit is autumn. You can get busses from Okutama station to Lake Okutama. The journey with mountains valleys and autumn colours will be amazing to see. Get down at the dam and spend sometime there. But the real view comes later take the bus from the dam again and get down at Ideno bus stop. This place seems like no where but if you walk a little 100m from the bus stop you can find a opening that will lead you down hill and directly to the bank of the lake. You can get the best view of Lake and the surrounding mountains from here. It was stony and dangerous but also exciting and thrilling.
VINEETH A — Google review
I hiked up to the lake from Okutama station, took about 3 hours, then had lunch and a beer on the other side of the dam. The views were absolutely stunning! I then ventured around the lake. My target was the pontoon bridge, which I reached after about 3 hours of walking. All flat, so not challenging, but I was already tired from the hike. I ran out of water about halfway through, and there was no opportunity to get some more, all of the taps along the way weren't fit for drinking. I think taking a 2 litre bottle should be enough for a hot day. Last bus from near the temple is about 5:30 I think, so I was in a bit of a rush at the end, and unfortunately, I didn't get to explore the temple. Still, keep an eye out for monkeys, the newborns can be spotted in late spring/early summer!

Second time my family stayed at log cabin here. Both times we totally enjoyed. Highly recommend going. Only issue we had, my two boys and I are tall so the bunk beds were not long enough for us tall people to sleep well. Next time we go, we will put the futons on the floor so we can sleep well. Service staff are totally amazing!

This is a good place for learn about forests in Japan. We came with a group. There are restrooms and a restaurant here. This restaurant provide wide range of foods which made out of local products such as vegetable, orange, cabbage, raddish, mushroom etc. Soba and Udon dishes are quite popular among both local and international tourists. There is a small Musium and a workshop to kids/ young children. They show which kind of animal live in the forest, different type of local plants, edible berries etc.

It's such a nice forest not too far from the city centre of tokyo. I saw a snake but hesitated to pick it up, and it escaped(luckily so, as it turned out to be venomous). Very few people on the trail during weekdays, mostly seniors picking herbs or just taking a relaxing walk in the forests.

This is a bit far out but it was worth the trip. And even during golden week it wasn’t too crowded. Get there early for a good parking spot. The main lot fills up early but they do have another parking area nearby. They do provide free shuttle service between the venue and the parking area. As far as the forest itself there are plenty of trails to choose from and interesting things to see. You can see a beautiful view of Mount Fuji quite a ways up the mountain but you go even further up you can view more things. I stopped at the Fuji viewpoint cause I was tired. If you’re not used to it, this can be a challenge. They also have a shop for food and souvenirs. But check this place out if you have a chance. You don’t have to go too high to enjoy this place. They also have a bike rack if you want to ride here.

Alex J — Google review
A beautiful and interesting forest of mixed trees including old beech trees, which are rare for the Kanto area. Accessibility is a factor in how appealing it will be for foreign visitors. There's a special rapid train on the Chuo Line that runs directly to Musashi-Itsukaichi station on weekends and holidays. Otherwise, transfer is required. From there, there is limited bus service to the forest -- only three buses in the a.m. But they run multiple buses to accommodate all the hikers April to November, so you're generally able to sit for the rather long and winding -- though scenic -- one-hour and about 900 yen ride. All those hikers seem to disappear somehow, though -- the trails are only moderately busy on big holidays and autumn leaf season. There are easy one-hour hikes and longer 4-5 hour moderately strenuous ones requiring proper footwear. At 1500 meters, it's also cooler and more prone to rain than Tokyo proper. There is a visitor center and two places to get food -- mostly typical noodles and curry. With a waterfall, various wildflowers and birds, a few good views, and fresh air, it's a nice place to experience nature if you're willing to put in the effort.
Aaron M — Google review
Located near the end of twisty Okutama road, the place serves as a rest area. They have a few shops, bus stops so that you can take a bus home if you wreck your car or bike :-) There're a couple of other parking along the way, and they would give you much more beautiful mountain and lake views, but they're much smaller and not paved.

Family restaurant
The western restaurant, "Yamasemi," is highly regarded for its delectable cuisine. Situated in Okutama, it offers an array of dishes to satisfy different tastes. One of their notable specialties is the Yamame Fish Burger, made from a sizable yamame trout resembling salmon. This burger pairs perfectly with their tangy wasabi tartar sauce, creating a delightful combination of flavors. Moreover, patrons rave about the deliciously prepared potatoes served alongside the burger.
(Translated by Google) We visited with our family, including our 1-year-old and 3-year-old. The restaurant is very child-friendly, with high chairs and cutlery, a space for toys and books, and a children's menu. The staff were also very kind and we had a relaxing time. The adults ordered a set of fried oysters and keema curry, which was also delicious and a very happy time. We would like to visit again. (Translated by Google) I bothered you while touring. I had fried oysters and keema curry. The fried oysters were very delicious. The tartar sauce that came with it was also homemade and delicious. The curry was at a gentle temperature, so I wish it had been a little hotter. It's safe and easy to park your bike. The atmosphere was also good. Styles to order first. It's in the middle of the Okutama tour road, so you have to keep your spirits up 😊💦 There are no souvenir shops etc. At the visitor center, we were given a very detailed explanation about the festival. You can also touch stuffed raccoons and martens. It seems like it would be fun to go here just for the sake of it, as you can get in touch with nature at a leisurely pace. I'll bother you again. It was a Sunday, but it was relatively empty, and since I had made a reservation, I was able to sit down immediately. You order first and then sit down, but all the menu items look delicious, so it's hard to decide. This time I ordered the Secret Staff Forbidden Burger (1,320 yen). The thick patty is topped with a large piece of cheese, which is very filling. If you add a single croquette to this, it becomes even more voluminous. The curry took a surprisingly long time to be served, but it looked very delicious, so I would like to try it next time. The cheese hamburger set meal was also quite luxurious. Basically, you can't go wrong with any order! I ordered an additional drink, but since I had already eaten, I was able to have it as a lunch drink. I think it would be a good place for lunch when heading to Okutama on a tour or drive.

I’m glad I believed the reviews 😁 The cheese hamburger is delicious, and the small side dishes are handmade and have a nostalgic taste. I thought it was miso soup, but it turned out to be a delicious soup. The shop is located in the hometown village of the mountains, and the large windows offer a nice view of nature. I still don't understand how Japanese establishments are rated on Google Maps and why some excellent places receive low ratings. Nonkiya, a local restaurant with delightful decor and delectable cuisine, offers an enjoyable dining experience for all. Despite the lack of an English menu, the friendly staff and delicious food make it a worthwhile visit. Located along a scenic highway, this charming eatery is nestled in nature's embrace.
I still don't get how Japanese rate their places in Google Maps, and why do great places are rated like a junky street food booth under a bridge 🤦🏻‍♂️. This restaurant is a purely local one, nicely decorated and with delicious food! Me and my friends all enjoyed all ordered meals, and the bill was surprisingly low.

Tange-do is a highly rated restaurant that offers delicious Okasan home cooking with fresh mountain ingredients. The food is exceptional, particularly the venison set menu. However, the overall ambiance is lacking as the old cafe appears cluttered and there is a loud TV playing in the corner. It's unfortunate that you can't enjoy the nice view outside and there are limited parking spaces available.
Small, but great place for a nice meal. The menu is on the wall and only in Japanese, so get your hiragana booklet out if you can’t read it. Be adventurous and order whatever, you won’t be disappointed.

4 Star food for this style of Okasan home cooking with fresh mountain ingredients so tastes good - I had the venison set menu. 3 Star feeling as old cafe looks cluttered and loud tv playing in corner spoils scene and you cannot sit outside which is sad given such a nice view, no English menu and no pictures so I could only order what I had read in reviews and pronounce in Japanese and parking only for two cars?

(Translated by Google) Visited on a Saturday in June 2020. I received the meat set meal for 1,500 yen. If it gets sluggish, turn it over yourself. I was told that there is no problem even if the redness remains. The rice and the small bowl of bamboo shoots in a shape I had never seen before were both very delicious. The venison, whose odor was removed with ginger, was tender and delicious. It was said that it would be over once the venison ran out, so by 12:50 on that day, preparations were underway. However, if you want to eat a meat set meal, be careful that it is sold out. Explore the Nippara Limestone Caves, the largest cave in the Kanto area, for a mesmerizing 40-minute, 800-meter journey through an enigmatic maze. Admire impressive stalagmites and discover scattered Buddha statues within the tunnels. The colorful LED lights add to the magical atmosphere of this underground wonderland. Escape the summer heat as you delve 800 meters underground into a refreshing 11°C environment and marvel at centuries-old limestone formations.
Very interesting! Never been in a place like this before, and I loved it! It was very cool inside- almost cold!! (11 degrees Celsius?!?) It’s very damp inside and water does drip on you, but I found it pleasant. It takes about 30 to 60 minutes to really enjoy the inside, and maybe another 20-30 minutes outside. Highly recommended for people of all ages- especially children and families, and anyone looking for a unique and natural experience. There are a lot of stairs and places where you have to duck down, so it might not be appropriate for people who have mobility issues.

This expansive, beautifully winding limestone cave seems popular with young Japanese couples and friend groups for dates and outings. The cave itself is impressively deep with stunning geological formations and refreshingly cool air that provides relief from outside heat. However, getting there is genuinely terrifying. The access road is single-lane both ways, forcing cars to back toward cliff edges when meeting oncoming traffic. Most incredibly, regular buses navigate this route multiple times daily - I cannot fathom how drivers manage this, especially during rain or fog when visibility drops to zero due to mist. The bus drivers deserve serious respect for their skill and courage. If you can handle the nerve-wracking journey and brief moments wondering if the cave might collapse, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular natural wonder. Just be prepared for white-knuckle driving and quick cave visits due to the challenging access.

Really enjoyed exploring the Nippara Limestone Caves with my guide, Ayumu. It was one of the highlights of my trip. Be warned! The temperature within the caves drop down to 10 degrees (this was during Summer time and I was looking at the thermometer inside the caves drop down). It’s best to bring a jacket. The cave inside has lots of twist and turns with some small openings, so be careful when walking up the stairs (you might bump your head). Inside, it’s quite a sight to behold and very tranquil.
Lok F — Google review
A cool cave system to explore. It’s quite cold (around 5-10 Celsius) so bring a jacket. Though you might build up a sweat since there are SO MANY stairs to climb around the cave. And these stairs are very steep and slippery, so you have to tread carefully. Make sure to bring a jacket and a pair of non-slip shoes. As for things to see around the cave - there are a few shrines, large caverns, and stalactites and stalagmites to view. I’m not particularly interested in these things, but it was an experience to visit once. My boyfriend who really loves nature loved this though. Regarding facilities, they are well-developed. There are restrooms, a small store/restaurant, and even a smoking area. Once we bought tickets, they also gave us some themed bookmarks. If you’re in the Okutama area, I think this would be worthwhile to see. I don’t think it’d be worth it to come to the area just for this spot though. It is quite difficult to get here (45min bus ride from Okutama station that only has a few runs per day)
Elizabeth T — Google review
This was a fun and unique experience on my trip to Japan. The drive here was scenic and exciting- full of winding, narrow mountain roads and amazing views. The entire cave system is lit, but I recommend bringing your own headlamp so that you can peek around unlit crevices. My friend once found an old 1960s Fanta can. He brought it home but later thought that it had bad energy as he was having nightmares and night sickness which ended as soon as he got rid of the can. I believe him because this place is quite eerie. There is a shrine in the back full of small piles of stones that were assembled by grieving parents and which allegedly hold the souls of their lost babies and fetuses. The legend says that these souls are here as punishment for the pain that they caused their parents. There is also a deep section of the cave called "Hell's crevice," and there was a miniature shrine building labeled "the black gate" down in that section. If you don't know any of this, then you can just stroll through the caves with the only impediment being the many stairs and the bats - some of the bats are lurking in tight spaces where they could be close to your head. But if you do know all of this information, then there's an extra layer of eeriness about the caves and you find yourself imagining what you would do if the power went out. Thankfully I had the headlamp lol. Price was very affordable, you will probably spend more on gas getting here if you drive than you do on the admission. The cave only took 1 hour to explore, so we also visited some local hiking trails, the local gorge and canyon, and a local onsen.
Oliver W — Google review
It's extremely lovely. Please highly recommended to visit, especially for the people who love old caves. 7000 years old. Moreover, it's kind of cold inside 11 degrees, and good pictures can be taken inside and along the way to the caves.

One of the highlights of the Okutama area, the Nippara Limestone cave is huge and fascinating except that there are no signs or descriptions in English so you do not know what you are looking at. We went on a weekday so it is not crowded at all. (although there is a huge 200 lot car park nearby so I would assume it gets very crowded in the weekends)

Hikawa International Trout Fishing Area is a managed fishing spot located near Moegi-no-Yu, downstream of the Nippara River. It's about a five-minute walk from Okutama Station and offers recreational fishing on a flat riverbank. Visitors can rent equipment on-site and enjoy an outdoor BBQ area to grill their catch. The area provides opportunities for trout fishing using various methods such as rod, speed, or even hands-on techniques.
Had a great time coming here to experience fishing for the first time! Staff and the other locals were kind enough to show me how to fish and unhook the fish. Spent a few hours learning, catching, eating and just enjoying the scenery of the site. The caught fish tasted fantastic fresh off the grill. Not too crowded in the morning, but the day pass will be higher price, if you come in the afternoon I believe you will be paying almost half price for day pass. I also rented rod and bought some bait, fee for your fish being cooked is pretty low from memory(100-300 yen per fish?) so I ate my money's worth.
Stanley L — Google review
Got there around 11 am. Available parking even though there were tons of people. We were able to catch 5 trouts and had them grill them for us. Slightly pricey for what it is as they’re not wild but more thrown into a pond. You can bbq and picnic freely. We had fun.
Roy M — Google review
Great place to visit near tokyo in about 2 hours distance to the location. Locates 10 minutes walk from okutama station . Good environment with not so costly price . You can lend fishing goods there and can take home all the fishes you caught as well.
Itsme A — Google review
Really nice fishing area, you can rent all the stuff here and BBQ here as well. Feels colder because of the river so dress appropriately. On the website they mention that you can get fish cleaned professionally, but I didn't see that service, I had to clean by myself. The prices are a bit on the high side, I feel the afternoon only pass is more worth it
Dash — Google review
Literally a walk from the end of the rail line. Here you can walk from the station and for a few catch your meal. The fish are stocked, the choice is live or artificial bait. The hidden gem is the restaurant, great curry, great view, relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended even if you don't fish.
Ted D — Google review
The restaurant in the place is idyllic with ok food. The fishing area feels like a scam - they charge you 1,700 yen for basic rods and then charge for each person separately as well as for the bait. The fishery organizer was quite rude - he refused to sell rods and tickets separately to us as we were two families. Also, the fish are about 15cm long (6 inches) and released only when you pay. Many do not catch fish at all. Nice for kids but not a good experience overall except for the restaurant. There are also a lot better fisheries.
Lari H — Google review
Fantastic trout fishing experience. They refill the area with trout to make sure that people have something to catch. It's a nice surprise if you are able to catch the mountain trout that are naturally there - not the ones they release into the water. It's better to focus on fishing earlier in the morning when the fish bite more so you can have more catch, and start grilling them early afternoon. They only accept cash and paypay so make sure you have either ready.
Ram T — Google review
Great experience for first time fishing. The staff were very helpful as well. They easily spot the noobs(us) and were eager to assist from unhooking the fish to cleaning the guts out from the fish. As we arrived 30 mins before closing and only caught 2 fishes, they also gave us 2 extra fish to take back to our campsite. That was very kind of them. Would definitely comeback at an earlier time so we don’t feel too rushed.

Ogouchi Dam, located in Tokyo, offers a stunning panoramic view especially during the early autumn season. It's a great place to visit with children to teach them about the source of water. The area is popular for autumn foliage hiking and short mountain climbing, making it quite busy during peak seasons. Although there are limited facilities such as a restaurant and small souvenir shop at Fureai-kan, the breathtaking views make it worth a visit.
One of my most favorite spots for quick motorbike trips. There's a lot of lovely places around to have some rest, vending machines and toilets. There's also a lovely walk path, mostly flat, around the lake, which I recommend to anyone, who is not able to hike or do a physically demanding walks in the mountains. Very quiet (despite loads of bikers and their loud machines) and excellent for photography lovers.

A Peaceful Escape from Tokyo Just a two-hour trip from central Tokyo, Ogochi Dam in Okutama is the perfect getaway for nature lovers. Surrounded by the beautiful Lake Okutama, the dam offers stunning views and great hiking trails. Whether you visit during autumn for the vibrant foliage or in spring for cherry blossoms, the scenery is breathtaking year-round.
Md R — Google review
On a slightly cloudy day, this dam offers one of the most amazing views of nature, water, mountains and the dam itself. This dramatic scene looks almost too perfect to be real, like an artifical background for a movie scene or a painting. It is beautiful to observe and walk around the dam/lake at a time like this and just witness this marvel of nature. There is also an observatory, but it's basically just a 3 floors tall tower that doesn't provide a whole lot of extra view since the lake and dam are just so vast to begin with. However, it offers a slightly different perspective, there is an exposition about the dam and the entrance is free, so you might as well check it out if you visit at the right time. Regardless, this dam is always worth checking out for its absolutely stunning scenery.

Moegi no Yu Onsen is a natural hot spring located just a short walk from Okutama Station. The hot spring offers both indoor and outdoor baths, allowing visitors to relax while enjoying picturesque views of the surrounding mountains and the Tamagawa River. The water, sourced from one of Japan's oldest rock strata, is known for its healing properties, containing metaboric acid and fluorine which are said to soothe various ailments such as neuralgia, muscle and joint pain.
We just had our dinner here. Everything we tried was perfectly delicious. The cafeteria is nice and clean. And you can just go there to dine without having to go to the spa just like we did.
Jocelyn D — Google review
After two days of climbing Mt. Kumotori without a shower, this Onsen feels like pure heaven. Just a short drive from Kamosawa, it’s clean, modern, and newly built. Towels aren’t available for rent, so either bring your own or be prepared to buy one on-site. The food is also surprisingly delicious—a perfect way to end the hike. There is a small footbath area for 100Yen next to the onsen.
Kee H — Google review
This was a very relaxing, cozy, clean establishment. You should bring your own towels, they do not rent towels here. They do sell them, but that doubles the cost. The tubs are very small, but it was not too busy when I was here so it was fine. They do not seem to have a problem with tattoos here. I enjoyed the cafe and gift shop upstairs.

Very scenic and easily accessible. The facility is nice, clean and well kept. It has both an indoor and an open outdoor hot spring. The place has nice views and offers a relaxing opportunity after hiking or and the end of a camping expedition.
TAHIR C — Google review
Onsen just next to the Hikawa Camp Site ⛺. For ¥1,250 / person, you can try the onsen with tree views for both indoor with jacuzzi style and outdoor bath (there are only 2 baths). Heading to the restaurant upstairs or try the chair massage for more relaxation.
M P — Google review
Nice location, lovely staff, and large gift shop/dining area. Only three stars, because overall it’s not worth the price. There are only two large baths: one inside and one outside. They are peaceful and refreshing, but feel crowded. No individual tubs like other onsens, and limited counter space to get ready after. It’ll do if you’re in the area, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to check it out.

VERTERE Taproom, also known as Beer Cafe VERTERE, is a laid-back and unpretentious beer cafe located in Okutama, a popular hiking destination in Japan. The tap room features light-wood counters, a leafy terrace, and a bar menu offering salads and hot dogs. It is highly regarded as one of the favorite microbreweries in Japan, with an incredible selection of craft beers that are a must-try for any beer enthusiast.
got the fried chicken and chips and some tortilla chips with salsa. in total it came to about 1,700 and the food was amazing in taste and (as pictured) quantity. staff were super nice and understanding given my limited Japanese and the food was quick to arrive. could not recommend enough and will absolutely be returning.
Jon G — Google review
One of my favourite Japanese breweries so I was very pleased to visit the taproom for a few beers after a whole day cycling in Okutama. Nice setting, good staff, great beers. Unfortunately, the fish & fries had the saltiest fries I've possibly ever tasted and kinda ruined the whole dish. We couldn't eat them and saw other customers unable to finish them as well. Please adjust this! Everything else was great.
JP — Google review
Very nice craft beer restaurant. Only open on weekends and National Holidays. 10 beers to choose from. A pint is a little expensive but good quality. Staff friendly and English is OK. Indoor and outdoor seating options. Very close to the train station and they have a shop for buying cans of beer across from the train station. Give it a try.
Daniel S — Google review
I don't drink but my husband absolutely loved their beer. As for the food, it is pity that they make karaage in their special beer batter but they don't use it for the fish and chips. Also, the fries were a bit too salty for my liking. The atmosphere was nice, especially at the outdoor seating.

few vegan options reduced to snacks...DOG FRIENDLY, to order you go to the cashier, and they hand you your beverage. beer is a plenty, the atmosphere is super up beat and really friendly, if you don't have a pint here you are missing out...bit confusing, it's down an alley across from the trail station.

Wonderful brewery in a gorgeous location. We loved all the beers, the laid back vibe of the garden and adorable out Japanese house. Plus the food is wonderful! The beer battered fried chicken is our favorite, but I also loved the duck ceasar salad.
Kelly N — Google review
Favorite micro brewery in Japan! Everything they make is incredible. If you're a craft beer lover, then this place is a must-visit. The brewery gets really crowded, especially on sunny days as there is outdoor seating in their garden/terrace. You can also purchase their cans to go at their can shop near the station. In terms of food, they mostly have meat and fried options, not a lot to choose from for vegetarians. The staff is very friendly and a few of them are English speakers. Great lunch spot for relaxing and hanging out with friends or after a long hike.
Alexis B — Google review
Really nice place with good food and locally produced craft beer. Unfortunately, we could not sample the beer because of the emergency situation (they are not serving alcohol) but you can take away canned beer from their near by brewery. The food was good and came in large portions. The minus one star was because of the slightly expensive price for food and no great options for families with kids seating-wise.

During the tour, I made a spontaneous visit to Okutama Lake Rest Area and engaged in a vibrant conversation with the proprietor, who specializes in selling various types of insects. To satisfy my taste buds, I ordered the Sansai Kamameshi Yamame Salt-grilled Set, which was priced slightly higher compared to other options available. The establishment offered an array of small bowls filled with traditional country-style dishes that evoked feelings of nostalgia.
Amazing Kamameshi, first time for me, was delicious!! Just enough to recharge my cycling "batteries".

A rest area that goes by very fast if you're heading by car or motorcycle toward Yamanashi on Route 411. I stopped on the way back toward Tokyo. Parking is available but guessing it would be crowded during warmer days and weekend/holidays. Toilets are clean; there are some shops for essentials but more for souvenirs. View of Lake Tama isn't anything special, but this is a nice place to rest if you need a break from riding.
CuppyRider — Google review
Excellent scenic rest spot and parking area with ample wide parking spaces for you to stay as long as you like. This is a public parking area that is own by Local Government, not the shops that line the parking area in front. You are not obligated to patronage these shops and restaurants and you can park anywhere you please, even right in front of the shops. Unfortunately, the shops directly facing the parking area get offended and can be rude if you park your cars, bikes in front of their shop but do not buy anything or eat in there, pay no attention. I highly recommend eating at the restaurant across the street instead, the service is hospitable and the food is fresh and prepared only on order, entirely different to the shops facing the parking area which are pre-prepped and serve heated on order.

(Translated by Google) It was lunchtime on a Saturday and I thought it would be busy, but there was only one other group of customers. There is no indoor air conditioning, just the windows open, so it is a little muggy. The temperature in Okutama today is about 28 degrees, and it's hot in direct sunlight but cool in the shade, so I guess people here don't need air conditioning, but to be honest it's tough. As the hot weather comes, it may be hard to eat, so it's a good idea to bring a hand fan. The kamameshi has lots of ingredients and just the right amount of rice. It's good value for 1000 yen. The rice is a little light in flavor and feels hard. If it was cooked over an open flame instead of just being arranged with the ingredients on top, the bottom of the duck should be charred, but it looks nice. It seems like it was cooked using a different method rather than over a fire. The set with yamame trout is 100 yen off, at 1700 yen. Freshly grilled, Yamame trout is a small fish, but it is relatively large and filling, and is delicious when eaten with salt on the skin. The mountain vegetable ramen is 700 yen and has a simple soy sauce flavor, but the saltiness is just right and you can drink up the soup to the last drop. The quantity is a little on the small side, but it's not bad. I didn't ask, but I'm not sure if they offer large portions. By the time we finished eating, customers had started to trickle in and the restaurant was nearly full. If only they could do something about the air conditioning lastly, I wouldn't have to eat drenched in sweat!

A very beautiful shrine. Unfortunately it’s only open until 16:00 / 4PM. But you still can visit it after the hours. You just can’t go inside. The way to the shrine is also very beautiful with the lanterns.

Magical mountain shrine with breathtaking views and a sacred wolf guardian 🐺 If you’re looking for a spiritual escape just outside of Tokyo, Musashi Mitake Shrine is a hidden gem. Located at the summit of Mt. Mitake, this ancient Shinto shrine is known for its guardian deity — the wolf, revered as a protector against evil and disasters. It’s a rare and powerful symbol in Japanese mythology. The shrine is reachable by the Mitake Cable Car, which boasts the steepest incline in the Tokyo area — a fun and scenic ride up the mountain. From the cable car station, there’s a moderate hike of about 30–40 minutes, with some steep paths, but it’s a great workout surrounded by lush forest and fresh mountain air. The atmosphere at the top is peaceful, energizing, and spiritually refreshing. Whether you’re into hiking, history, or nature, this place offers a bit of everything. You’ll also find some beautiful torii gates, stone lanterns, and panoramic views along the way. Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and try to go on a clear day to enjoy the views! Highly recommended for a day trip that connects culture, nature, and spiritual calm.

The cable car is 1200 yen round trip then a short hike to the shrine. The shrine is pretty big and there are stores and restaurants that are close to it on the mountain. Provides a beautiful view on a clear day. The path is nice and well maintained but be prepared for a steep hike.

Amazing hike. I started at the Mitake train station #10 bus stop. It runs 7 days per week about every 30 minutes. The #10 bus takes you to the JR cable car. You will need to walk up a rather steep paved road for about 5 minutes from the cable car bus stop to the actual cable car. I did not total up every dollar but it's about $8-$10 per person round trip. The local village stores including a small convience store don't open until 9am. I started my trip at 8am which was about perfect. Bring water and a few snacks. I walked the entire loop from the temple to the rock garden and falls in about 4hrs. Enjoyed the best soba lunch ever with saitake tempura at the end. It was an amazing day and well worth the trip from Tokyo

This place is worth visiting. Really beautiful temple in top of the mountain. You can also experience the Cable car service on the ways. Allocate at least half of your days.

Musashi Mitake Shrine, where a mythological wolf guided legendary warrior turned emperor Yamato Takeru to safety. Believe it or not, the air at 929 meters above sea level is fresh and climbing all these stairs is good for your blood pressure and calorie burn. In regular, non COVID times I saw some gift offering rituals in the back, more sacred area, but I’m not sure all of them are held today. It was also sad to see a lot of the shops and hotels struggling and either close permanently or temporarily. So if you’re a dog-person (or any pet) do yourself a favor, support small businesses, get your pet an omamori and stay healthy by visiting this amazing place.
Omri R — Google review
Perfect hike with your furry friend. Pets are welcome on the cable car going up to the shrine and may even be blessed at the temple.
Stephanie N — Google review
Get off at the Mitake train station. You can take the bus and cable car to get to the shrine. Or you can hike up the mountain. The shrine is pretty nice but there are lots of steps. It is not disabled friendly so be aware . There are many walking paths and photo opportunity spots all around. It's a great way to experience something just outside of Tokyo.

Mountains
Mount Mitake is a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers, located just a 1-2 hour drive or train ride from central Tokyo. The area offers stunning views of lush greenery and surrounding mountains. Visitors can take a funicular or hike to the peak, where they'll find the Musashi Mitake Shrine dedicated to a white wolf deity. The mountain is part of the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, featuring walking trails, waterfalls, and scenic landscapes.
Very nice hike suitable for beginners! You can drive all the way up to the cable car because there’s a convenient parking lot. Kei cars might have some trouble driving to the top because it’s very steep lol be careful on icy days there’s lots of signs warning of slipping!

A wonderful hike up Mt. Mitake to visit the temple at the summit. Start by taking the ropeway up, then head to the tourist information counter to pick up maps and details about the trail. Be sure to visit the Rock Garden—it's a highlight of the hike. There's also a large rock you can climb for a bit of fun. The round trip takes about two hours.
Kee H — Google review
It's a pretty awesome place to hike. Easy for beginners. You can take a bus right outside Mitake station, turn left, cross the road, and turn left. Or just ask the visitor centre and ask for a map.The bus is scheduled, so do take note of the time. Once you board the bus, it will take you all the way to near the cable car. You will need to walk uphill for 5 mins to reach the cable car station. Once there, I suggest you take note of the cable car timing to prepare the time to descent. After exiting the cable car station, you will need to walk for abt 10 min on a stretch of road to reach the town. To even reach the start of the walk to the shrine, you will need to cont uphill inside the town. Those who are planning for the Nanayo waterfall, you will need to go to near the shrine, and turn left, follow the sign board. Overall, you can walk 1 loop to the nanayo waterfall> rock garden> ayahiro fall> cedar trees> shrine. Spent a total of 2.5 hr or less for the route. Its steep initially will downhills and slopes then slippery rocks and icey pathways w snow, followed by gentle path back to the shrine.

I can really recommend Mount Mitake as a day trip from Tokyo. Breathtaking views. Just remember that if you take the last cable car down from the mountain you will miss the last bus to Mitake train station :)

Great hiking and shrines to visit Cable car is ¥600 one way saves 1 hour on foot, but the beautiful forest is worth the walk with all their sacred old trees
Jordan D — Google review
Anyone can easily reach the summit by taking the mountain train. The streets near the summit were old-fashioned and interesting. It is not that crowded, so you can take your time to explore the nature.
Rintaro — Google review
I climbed here by using Senzoku trail to first summit Odake and after Odake, Mitake felt like heaven by how easy it was to get on top and go back down.
Mert K — Google review
Easily accessible by train. Good for a day trip outing. Can take the Cable cart too. Need to walk a bit to reach the Nanayo waterfall. There is a place mentioned as Rock Garden but actually there is no specific Garden such as instead the route to Ayahiro waterfall is surrounded by rocks and the water stream in between that is the Rock Garden.

Waterfalls
Nanayo Falls is a stunning natural wonder with a 50-meter drop, featuring seven steps of varying sizes. Accessible to the public, this waterfall offers a breathtaking sight as it cascades through massive rocks. The area surrounding the falls presents some challenges, including steep descents and slippery terrain, so sturdy footwear is essential. Despite the obstacles, visitors find the journey to be rewarding as they are greeted by an impressive view at the end.
A few steep descents but well worth the trip. Come with a hiking stick helps
Kong H — Google review
The falls are beautiful, with a stronger current than the close-by Ayahiro falls. However, the descent is very steep, and at several points there are tall steps to go down or roots and rocks making the terrain tricky without good shoes. The area right by the falls is very slippery, so be careful there!
Jean M — Google review
There is a quite a descent to get there as there are many, tall steps required to get to the falls but in the end the view is quite amazing, also watch your feet as the place is quite slippery
Ushan D — Google review
Nothing great about the falls. The hike to and from the place is the only good bit.
Pallab P — Google review
Small waterfall but the water is amazingly clear. The way it has cut through the rockside is fascinating. Climbing too it from Mount Mitake requires quite a bit of strength as the way is very steep and is mostly made up of stairs.

Mt. Odake is a 4,154-foot summit in Okutama, the western edge of Tokyo, offering panoramic views of Mount Fuji and Tokyo. It can be reached by trails or a cable car. Combined with a hike to Mt. Mitake and the Ootake Limestone Caves, it makes for an all-round weekend experience with a campground on-site.
Great challenging yet rewarding trail, I enjoyed it a lot. The hike took around 5 hours to finish including a lunch break on top We saw Fuji but for best views of it better to reach the top in the morning (before noon)
Avital F — Google review
Great hike, 4hr 20mins in total. Certainly has some challenging parts where you are physically climbing/on all fours.
Alistair M — Google review
Definitely a tough trek for beginners, but should be no problem for experienced hikers and people who are otherwise active. Assume the standard route to the top, in either direction, will take anywhere from 3-5 hours depending on your pace and frequency of stops. Be cognizant of when the sun sets as portions of the hike are deep in the forest. It gets rather dim earlier than you might expect.
D. S — Google review
We started hiking from Okutama station and hopped on Mt. Nokogiri, Mt. Otake san and Mt. Mitake. It was quite an adventurous trek but beautiful views at Otake summit was worth taking some pains during the rough hiking areas. Some patches between Atago shrine to Nokogiri summit are specially challenging. Make sure you carry sufficient food and liquids are there is almost nothing until you reach Mitake.. Definitely a must try route!
Prachi P — Google review
The hike was scenic, not very difficult even now in February, but of course do not underestimate it especially when going down, it might be very slippery on the wet snow. There are passages with only a narrow path and a steep slope on the side but there are chains. I wasn t lucky with the weather, the view from the top was just milk all around:)...
Andrea L — Google review
Really good hike, and the beauty of Odake-san is that you can do a long or a short hike since there are a lot of trails. The terrain gets rocky and treacherous close to the top, so don't forget your hiking shoes.
Katerina T — Google review
Windy and rainy conditions when we went so couldn’t see much. It was super foggy when we were hiking too. We decided to take the shortest route to Odake which was rather steep but had to turn back due to it being closed off basically half way. We went via the rock garden route. There’s a few sections with chains too.
Valerie X — Google review
Nice hike to the peak of Mt Otake from Mt Mitake. But do take note that it gets very foggy closer to the peak (specifically from the Otake Shrine to peak) on a rainy day. Due to the typhoon hagibis, some parts of the trail has been damaged/closed (Nanayonotaki Waterfall)

Hatonosu Canyon is a rugged gorge formed by the Tama River cutting through Chichibu Paleozoic strata. The canyon features walking trails, bridges, Shinto shrines, and hot spring hotels. Visitors can explore the Kori area before the suspension bridge or cross to the Shiromaru area, passing by the Shiromaru Dam.
A perfect summer escape... I came in mid-September (35°) on a Friday, and it wasn't busy at all. A few other people were scattered across the river, but it was easy to find a quiet spot to enjoy. The water is absolutely freezing, which I failed to anticipate, but don't let that stop you from swimming as letting the currents take you downstream is a fun experience. If you want to find the spot I went to all you have to do is cross the bridge and take a right, then after taking some steps down keep your eyes open to the righthand side for an opening that gives you a really nice view, from there scale down some rocks which was fairly easy and it should take you right down to a sandy part where you can relax😊
Therz — Google review
It’s a bit of a hike to reach the bottom of the canyon and explore the Tama River, but well worth the effort. We took the staircase next to Kikori Café to make our way down. The canyon is stunning—peaceful, scenic, and full of natural beauty.

As you ride the train to Okutama, you'll see many people heading for hikes, even elderly folks, which is pretty impressive. There are different hiking spots to explore. We started at Hatonosu Station and walked to Okutama Station, around 10km, but it was totally worth it. The track is pretty easy and beginner-friendly. The path is calm and green, with lots of trees. The river water is clear, and some folks are fishing for rainbow trout. You can also try canoeing with a reservation, I think. Late November would be a great time to visit, when the trees turn a beautiful red.

Really, such a lovely place. It’s an easy hike from Hatonosu to Okutama with places to stop on the rocks along the way. Some easier to get to than others. Bring your own food because there aren’t a lot of spots to eat but really, a picnic with these views, is kind of what it’s all about!

Shiromaru Dam Control Lake is a picturesque site with a concrete dam and a small, turquoise lake. The dam controls the water flow, making the lake ideal for trout to swim through the fish ladder connected to it. This spot marks the end of a scenic river walk where visitors can explore the fish ladder building and witness its workings up close. The area offers an idyllic setting for an afternoon stroll or drive along winding roads with refreshing breezes and ample sunshine.
Small lake since it’s for dam control, but surely it’s beautiful and refreshing. Connected to fish ladder building. This place is the end of walking along the river course. Then you can go to the fish ladder bunker to see what’s inside

(Translated by Google) I visited this dam on a drive during the long weekend. It's not a big dam, so I was able to look around like it was a light stroll. The parking lot is located high up, and the entrance to the fishway observation passage is right next to it, and the exit is at the same height as the dam, so it's more efficient to start by observing the fishway, as you'll have to go up and down fewer stairs. The fishway observation passage is free. The dam itself is easy to walk on, so you can enjoy seeing the sluice gates up close, and you can see the fishway from the dam. The fishway was quite fun, so I'd like to go again at a different time of year.

Indulge in the delightful local cuisine at Hatonosu Kamameshi, where you can savor the flavors of the clean surroundings and natural wonders. Treat yourself to their signature dish, a single plate featuring rice and grilled fish seasoned with salt. Although it may be slightly pricey, ranging from 2100-2200Yen, it's worth every penny. Explore their diverse menu options and embark on an authentic culinary journey.
We love the Hatonosu Kamameshi restaurant 鳩の巣釜めし which translates as the “Clay Pot Restaurant the Pigeon Nest”. We recommend to have some salmon trout (cherry trout) sashimi as starter (yamameヤマメ刺身), and then go for the clay pot main dish, either shimeji mushrooms (kinoko kamameshi setきのこ釜めしセットat 1,650 yens) or mountain plants (sansei kamameshi set山菜釜めしセットat 1,750 yens). Both dishes come with a vegetable soup, a tempura, pickles, konnyaku (konjac) and a small dessert (seasonal “youkan”). The koshihikari rice is bought by the restaurant directly from Niigata producers in Aonuma. You may also find a wide variety of one-dish plates, such as grilled fish (“salmon trout yamame”, “rainbow trout niji masu”, ou “ayu”), cold noodles, grilled pork, etc. Don’t leave the place without having a look at the superb photographs of the wild fauna and flora taken by Chef OKABE Masaki, who is really talented. The restaurant offers two parkings. Okutamagawa is a very popular destination for hikers and nature lovers, located one hour and a half of Tokyo downtown. It is still part of Tokyo prefecture and people will joke that you can see bears in Tokyo (black moon circle bear), which is entirely true as this mountainous part of Tokyo has beautiful remote forests, waterfalls, and a lake.

As a girl, I was a little full, but with the soup, I was really full and satisfied. It was super delicious. But the business is very good during holiday meal time, so there may be no seats or you may have to wait a while.

(Translated by Google) I've always been curious about this place because there are so many cars parked there whenever I drive to Okutama. I ordered the set meal that caught my eye without hesitation. Thick konnyaku sashimi with vinegared miso and yuzu, and the tempura was large with outstanding shrimp. The bowl for the soba looked small, but it was deep and I was full. I'm from western Japan, so I don't really know much about soba, but I loved the aroma and the texture. I'll go again if I get the chance. (Translated by Google) My girlfriend said, ``I want to eat soba in Okutama❣️,'' so I visited. It was a little far from the station, but the sidewalk was in good condition, so I held her hand and had a nice conversation as we headed to the store. The shop is small, but clean, and I was able to relax in the quiet interior. I went there for lunch with my girlfriend to enjoy soba, but the soba chef was hospitalized, so we were unable to enjoy the soba. However, the tempura set and tenju I ordered instead turned out to be an unexpected success. The tempura was not greasy, the batter was crispy and light, and you could really taste the flavor of the ingredients. The tempura sauce in particular was exquisite, with a great balance of sweetness and saltiness, and the rich flavor complemented the deliciousness of the tempura and rice. I was very satisfied with the refreshing taste that I couldn't believe it was tempura. When the soba chef returns to work, I would like to visit with my girlfriend again. However, since our relationship is conditional, when I think about our uncertain future, my heart suddenly tightens and I become silent. Still, for now, I want to use the limited time we have on our way home to check on each other's feelings, replenish our minds and bodies, wrap ourselves around each other like the roots of a tree, and deepen our bond. The casual moment when I enjoyed a delicious lunch with my girlfriend at this restaurant became a fond memory.

Restaurant
Cafe & Restaurant Saka, located in Okutama, is a popular dining spot that offers a delightful Western lunch. Situated past the slopes and residential areas, this restaurant may initially cause some unease. However, it boasts a parking lot that can accommodate around 6 to 7 cars. One standout dish is the corn potage soup-flavored mousse garnish, which receives high praise for its exquisite taste.
(Translated by Google) I ride a road bike. This restaurant is not a famous restaurant, but I think it's the best hamburger restaurant in Okutama.I recommend the combo burger. The store is also stylish and nice. Coco is a restaurant located in the mountains that is run by a school for people with disabilities, and the staff are also people with disabilities working hard. The staff are very friendly and this is a store that you will want to visit again and again. And I was surprised that the food was reasonably priced and served at the level of a course meal. However, if you are on a bicycle, you will have to climb a slight washboard-like slope, so please do your best. There are no cycle racks, so you'll have to park at the edge of the parking lot. We were able to get in until the next customer, but the next few customers were turned away because the restaurant was full. If you're planning on having lunch here, it's probably best to make a reservation. The interior is spacious, with plenty of wood. Pets are apparently allowed on the terrace seats. I ordered the Akigawa beef and Okutama shiitake mushroom hamburger (1,500 yen). An appetizer arrived before the main course. The appetizers on my visit included turmeric soda, couscous, and peaches. The main course arrived shortly after. The hamburger was well-cooked and served with onion sauce. Shiitake mushrooms are apparently used as a binder for this hamburger. It's probably a blend of ground beef, so it has a refreshing taste. The shiitake mushroom garnish was delicious. The meal is generously portioned, with salad, soup, and rice. Personally, I prefer the 100% beef hamburger, but considering the selection and price, it's easy to see why this restaurant is so popular. Dried shiitake mushrooms and other items are also available for purchase. Payment is cash only. Nestled in the Tama region, about an hour's journey from Central Tokyo, Akigawa Valley spans 20 kilometers and offers a picturesque escape. The Aki river flows through this valley, providing ample opportunities for camping and fishing. The famous Ishibune bridge is a popular spot for capturing stunning seasonal transformations. Surrounded by rivers, forests, and mountains in Akiruno City, this destination boasts tree-lined temples, campsites, a sky bridge, and gently flowing streams.
Fantastical place to take a dip and get out the city for a while. Definitely a nice introduction to japanese nature too. There is an onsen here as well, and a small quaint village to explore. Highly recommended!

Short Introduction for people who don’t know what it is. It is a stream of river which is long(valley), where you can enter and bath in the river depending on the stream speed(be careful though) It is mostly preferred for camping, barbecue, fishing I used train for the access but actually car will be better The valley is situated inside a dense forest which will make you feel out of Tokyo, no entry or anything You can have all the fun you want, many restaurants are available. Here people visit for hot bath and to Temples and shrines also It has a great scenic view and enjoyed a lot in the river, best location for summer

It's a peaceful place for relaxing your mind, a small local Japanese village. It takes two hours from Tokyo Station by Ome Rapid train. It's worth taking a trip here if you have free time. I just wonder why it's so beautiful, but few people come here. You can get an English map and some suggestions from an information center in front of Okutama Station.

Tucked away just 90 minutes from Tokyo’s bustling heart lies one of Japan’s best-kept secrets — Hikawa Gorge (氷川渓谷) in Okutama. It’s not just a destination — it’s a reset button for your soul. From the moment you step off the train at Okutama Station, you’re greeted by fresh mountain air and the soft roar of the Tama River weaving through ancient stone and moss-covered boulders. The gorge unfolds like a Ghibli backdrop — serene, lush, and wildly photogenic. Think emerald waters, vibrant foliage, and the kind of peace that city life can never offer. The trail along the gorge is an easy, accessible walk, perfect for casual hikers, couples, or even solo travelers needing to disconnect. Every twist in the path offers a new view — a shimmering pool of water, a wooden suspension bridge, or sunlight filtering dreamily through cedar trees. In autumn, it transforms into a kaleidoscope of red, gold, and amber. In summer, the cool river breeze makes it a perfect natural air-con retreat. What sets Hikawa Gorge apart is its unspoiled charm — no crowds, no tourist traps, just nature in its purest form. Want a picnic by the river? Do it. Want that Instagram-perfect bridge shot? It’s there, waiting. Need to clear your mind while listening to the river’s lullaby? You’ll find your zen here. Whether you’re an overworked Tokyoite or a traveler looking to escape the beaten path, Hikawa Gorge is your green antidote to city noise. Bring your camera, your favorite snack, and a quiet heart. You’ll leave with more than just pictures — you’ll leave with peace.

My experience here was almost dreamlike, such a beautiful, and serene place. I wanted to visit Okutama, so I hopped on all the trains I needed to get there. A much needed break from the city which was met with such an interesting progression of concrete buildings, to family homes and finally to lush green rolling hills, valleys, mountains dotted with patches of buildings and homes. As I got closer to Okutama I noticed my train cart becoming emptier and emptier as people departed at their stops. At a point it felt like I was the only one on board, an almost spirited away kinda feeling. I got off at Okutama station, step out of the cabin like designed station into a calm mist like drizzle of rain. I was one of 5 passengers leaving the station and the rest went off in their respective directions while I made my way to Hikawa gorge. It was so strange I walked past a shrine at the entrance to the bridge that leads to the paths of the gorge and it felt like I was the only person there, in fact I was. I crossed the wooden bridge and had free rein to go where ever I wanted. I walked all over the place, listening to the rain, feeling the cool atmosphere, and breathing in the crisp mountain air. I wish I had more time here but I arrived a few hours before sundown and felt like I needed to leave soon. I wish I also brought better footwear because I would have hiked up the shrine at the top of the nearby mountain. Anyways please go visit okutama and Hikawa gorge it was great

Mugiyama Floating Bridge is a captivating sight as it winds its way across the serene waters of Lake Okutama, providing pedestrians with access to the base of Mt. Mito. Don't confuse the other Mugiyama Bridge (normal bridge) with this Floating Bridge - there is only one Looks nice, not as impressive as in photos and you definitely cannot walk across it because it's not connected to the ends, you can't walk down the stairs either Right beside a highway Worth it if you're not tight on time and know the bus schedule well But otherwise Lake Okutama itself should be more worth it than this bridge alone 7-9min walk from the nearest bus station, bus 14 from Okutama Station but quite a long distance out

Soba noodle shop
Jinya is a long-standing soba restaurant located in Okutama. The establishment offers a soba set meal featuring firm, thin noodles and refreshing dipping sauce. Guests can also enjoy sashimi konjac topped with yuzu miso that melts in the mouth, along with other delicious accompaniments like grated yam and boiled bamboo shoots. The restaurant provides a picturesque view of two bridges and beautiful yellow ginkgo trees across the river from its front.
For visitors to Japan that like to ride motorcycles, the road from 411 to 139 is a great ride out in good weather. The whole area is picturesque with speed limits that allow you time to look at a few places...but beware! The reason the speeds are often only 30kph is due to the quantity of hairpin bends. Bring a picnic and drinks as convenience stores vanish after a while.

(Translated by Google) I stopped by here briefly while touring Okutama. The seats inside the restaurant are spaced far apart, so it's spacious and you won't bump into anyone. When I entered the restaurant, a staff member came out and said "Welcome." There were no seating arrangements, but I guess it meant you could sit wherever you like. As soon as I sat down, they gave me water. They don't provide wet towels, so I recommend entering the restaurant in a clean state. I ordered mountain vegetable soba. I usually like cold soba, but it was cold so I had it hot. The noodles were neither good nor bad, and the soup was light with a slightly weak broth, which was easy on the stomach. The portion was very large and I was full. Thank you for the meal (Original)

Meat dish restaurant
Earth Garden is a laid-back restaurant located in the lush greenery of Okutama valley, offering a simple yet cozy ambiance with forest views. The venue provides a wood-lined setting and a terrace option, making it suitable for COVID-friendly dining. While the prices may be slightly high due to its remote location, visitors can expect delicious Japanese-style burgers, braised pork, and fried snacks. The restaurant is renowned for its famous Hamburg set dish and offers a variety of menu items.
Great spot in Okutama! Ambience is laid back and cozy - a terrace option makes it very covid friendly (although prepare to bundle in the winter). We didn’t have to wait for a table and arrived around 1:00 PM. We got the famous Hamburg set dish, and it didn’t disappoint! Other items on the menu looked great too - there was a bigger variety than I anticipated. We were hoping to walk the little trail by the river after eating, but it seems it’s closed right now due to weather damage. A reason to pay another visit once it’s repaired!

Be sure to make a LINE account before you visit since that is how you’ll be making a reservation. There are a lot of locals eating there so the line can be quite long. The abalone mushrooms are a must try. The Hamburg steak is good but not incredible. Portions are good! The ambience is amazing. All orders are made through QR code.

This restaurant is VASTLY overpriced. They only serve ONE main course dish - and it is a hamburger patty without the bun. It costs between $20-$30 USD depending on the conversation rate. Want to add a single egg or a piece of cheese? It's $3-$5 USD. This is not prime rib or some rare gourmet meat, it's basically a tiny meatloaf. The views are great and the staff were friendly, but this was my worst dining experience on my trip to Japan.

Really nice place—the views are amazing and peaceful. The hamburgers are a salty, which is a shame but the mushroom fries were delectable.

Laidback restaurant nestled in the greens of Okutama valley. they are famous for their Japanese hamburg, which I can vouch for as it was absolutely delicious. The price is a bit high, but something can expected as it’s out of the way. The views were amazing if you sit on the terrace. It’s a must visit for lunch if you happen to be hiking around the area or after kayaking.

Cafe
Riverside Cafe Awa is a charming spot located by the Tama-gawa River, nestled at the base of Mt. Mitake-san. The cafe offers a delightful selection of game meat cuisine and local beer, with their popular dish being the Volcano - a delectable homemade roast beef rice bowl complemented by an original dipping sauce and wasabi-flavored dressing. Visitors can enjoy the warm hospitality of the staff who are fluent in both Japanese and English.
This place is just amazing. the staff is super friendly, very kind and speaks Japanese and English. very warm and smiling welcome. it offers very well organized water activities. with a location along the river (magnificent). My biggest crush remains the restaurant, a simple and very good food , with the carrot cake as a masterpiece 🤩 (please I can have the recipe seriously). I will be back very soon. I found this cafe coincidentally while I was walking along the river. The ambiance is very relaxing while sitting at the terrace and watch the beatiful scenery of the autumn leaves. There are not many options for foods especially people who don’t like raw meat like me, but there are nice deserts to eat with a coffee. Overall, it’s a nice place to give a break while hiking along the river.

Visited this soot on Saturday for lunch. Waited roughly an hour then got seated to the table. I ordered their #1 recommended menu and it was good but the soup was too salty and the price didn’t match the taste in my opinion. I guess that’s because of the location...? There's lots of equipment. You can relax on the calm terrace seats. It's a bit pricey, but it's perfect for an occasional sightseeing stop. You can occasionally see trains. The parking lot is small, so I had to wait in line. However, the complicated layout of the lot makes lining up difficult. In the end, someone cut in line, which put a damper on my enthusiasm. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, but it's a little hot. Soup and water are self-service. I ordered roast beef and coconut curry. Both looked just as delicious as the photos! I had high hopes! The wasabi sauce for the roast beef is served on a separate plate, so it's perfect for families with children. But...the overall flavor wasn't to my liking. I wonder. Was the roast beef a little overcooked? Was the flavor unbalanced? (The rice would have been better if it had more flavor.) The curry was clearly bland. I asked for salt and ate it. Hmm. The atmosphere is nice, and the ingredients are good. It was a disappointing feeling. Mount Kumotori, standing at 2,017 meters, is a forested mountain that offers breathtaking panoramic views and hiking opportunities. The summit features a hut for visitors to rest and camping options are available as well. Mitsumine Shrine serves as both a famous power spot and the gateway to hiking Mount Kumotori. The park also includes other peaks such as Mount Kinpu and Mount Kobushi in the Oku-Chichibu massif.
I have been there in the winter with my friend. It was a little bit tough in the snow. Be sure to carry aizen, enough food and water. It is necessary in the winter, bring them or you would regret. We climbed from 8AM to 7PM to the lodge near the top, so we could see sunrise in the next morning. The scene is great as you can see. The lodge was reasonable and comfortable. Breakfast is simple but delicious. Always hope to be there again since then!!!

11-Feb-2025 #intothewild At the Top of Tokyo: Mount Kumotori (2017.1m) 🥾🧗‍♀️🏔️ This is highest point of Tokyo and route easy but very long. We started our hike from Mitsumine Shrine around 11AM and arrived at Kumotori sanso at 6PM. For hikers, we suggest to arrive at least before 4PM. We stayed at Kumotori sanso. Next day we started at 6AM and sun was already on horizon. It took 1hr to reach the peak of Mt Kumotori. It was windy and cold in peak so we only stayed couple of minutes there. For about an hour we stayed in emergency shelter near peak. The shelter is well established with toilets too but no water. We enjoyed breakfast in shelter with beautiful view from there. Around 8:30 we descended to Okutama. Always wanted to do winter hike, and on this special occasion of my birthday we embark for this challenge. It was also the birthplace of one my favorite anime Kamado Tanjiro (Demon Slayer)🥷 It was tough and memorable days with my beautiful wife❤️

Standing at 2,017 meters, Mt. Kumotori is the tallest mountain in Tokyo Prefecture—and a 2-day, 1-night climb that's well worth the effort. We hiked on a Monday and had the trail mostly to ourselves (only five guests stayed at the lodge that night, including us). In June, the insects are relentless—no amount of repellent will fully keep them away. A face net is your best defense, along with light-colored clothing. We started our hike at 10:30 AM and reached the lodge around 3:30 PM, including a 40-minute break to take shelter from the rain. Just follow the trail signs and use Google Translate when needed. However some of the signages cannot be read but we were very lucky to bump into climbers coming down which were able to point us the direction (there is just 1 part of the trail midway which is confusing and a wrong turn will lead you back down the mountain on the other side.)
Kee H — Google review
Took me 8.5 hours to get to the top and to get back. If you are a slower hiker, it is better to take the first bus. Otherwise it will be too dark for you to come back....alive.

Totally recommend warming up by starting from a breakfast spot on the lake level. I dropped 1 stop before Kamosawa and ate my bread on the Tozura floating bridge. The approach to the parking lot was fairly easy to find. At the end of October, this route saw more traffic as my wife said it was some holiday period in Japan. Everyone was friendly on the trail, I lost track of the number of greetings I said up the forest tracks. Interestingly, there were a few water spring spots along the hike in the forest and the approach after the Nanatsuishi hut. I would pretend these had extra minerals and chug them sparingly from my bottle till the end of my hike. This year (2023) also saw more bear sightings according to the news, and my mother in law packed a rusty bear bell for me carry, though the 'ching ching' does sounds like dinner bells to my ears. Once you ascended Nanatsuishi, you can see Kumotori in the distant cloudy tree tops. Tracing the top of the ridge would bring you past a helipad and up rocky zig zags slopes before finally seeing the shelter hut at the top. Foolishly, I chose the dark descent to Sanjo no Yu which was my hut, and the next hour saw a desolated, quiet descent which saw a few huge animals rustling away from the chingaling bells from my hips. I saw glimpses of 2 deers and 1 white animal which I believe to be a goat. Overall I loved the climb despite the complaints from my thighs and feet.
Yitzhak K — Google review
A very long trek to the top from Kamosawa bus stop. Easy to climb except for some steep sections near the top. A very good experience that also included encounters with deer, monkey and a cat at the Mt. Nanatsu cabin. The trek itself is easy but feels difficult due to the long and unending trail to the top. I covered 24 km. in a single day starting at 0758 in the morning and finished at 1845 in the evening. I do not recommend a day trip to this mountain but if you want to make sure to reach the trailhead by 0600 in the morning(only possible by car/taxi), or take the 0534 bus from Okutama station that will drop you near the trailhead at 0608.

Great mountain! A bit snowy during the winter, but still beautiful views. When I had visited, a local had offered to let me stay a night in his home in fear of the mythical oni that roamed at night. I had declined at first, but he insisted. The next morning, I kept venturing up the mountain until a foul smell hit my nose, and from there I decided to turn back. Other than that, great experience!

Mt. Takanosu is a challenging mountain with a steep trail, ravine, and ridge leading to its summit, offering stunning views of Mount Fuji and the surrounding area. The south side provides breathtaking vistas of Okutama mountains, Tokyo peace pagoda at Mt Odera, and iconic Mt. Fuji on clear days. In summer, the peak boasts a variety of wildflowers. Climbing in February still presents significant snow along the ridge, requiring crampons or spikes for the icy path.
Just came back from the top of Mt. Kuratoyama (right before Mt. Takanosu). The trail was awesome and beautiful. It’s super sketch as I did it in middle of February. There was a lot of snow, and I had on regular hiking shoes. I camped at the summit on the snow, and decided to turn back at this point as I was the only person in the area. It was so cold at nite that my hands were sore thru my gloves. Wonderful sunset and hot food made the trip fabulous. Left in the morning amongst the fluttering of birdies. For those going during February, don’t hesitate to turn back after Kurato especially if alone as it only gets colder and snowier the higher u go.

He also explained about the habits of wild animals. Next time, I would like to come back earlier in the day and take it easy. The autumn leaves on the premises were very beautiful. Mountain peak

Mountains
Mt. Mito, located in the quiet Okutama area of Western Tokyo, is a family-friendly hiking destination offering picturesque views and natural beauty. The mountain features hiking trails through beech forests, leading to the summit where hikers can enjoy views of Mt. Fuji. The loop hike around Mt. Mito takes approximately three and a half hours and includes a visit to the impressive 33-meter Mito no Otaki Fall accessible via a suspension bridge.
This is a great mountain with easy access by bus from Musashi-Itsukaichi Station. The loop hike to the top from Tomin no Mori 都民の森 takes between 3-4h and the views of the surroundings, including Fuji-san, are great.

Was a great hike. Did early October 2020. Unfortunately, cloudy, so we couldn't see Mt. Fuji. Maybe for the first hike during a long pause due to coronavirus a bit too much with 900m height increase, but manageable. The Mugiyamauki pontoon Bridge was unfortunately closed at Okutama lake due Tor repairs plus a bear sighting.

Nice place to visit from Tokyo especially for beginner hiking people.

Short little hike, suitable for a half-day trip. You never leave Tokyo limits!

Very arduous but rewarding hike. Lots of areas where the trail is difficult to find and many steep paths. There's a wooden observatory deck built at the peak to see the view above the trees.

Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Japanese restaurant
The eatery Shimakatsu is located in the westernmost region of Tokyo and gained popularity through its appearance in the drama "Zetsu Meshi Road". While their menu features a rare specialty called "Tororo Meshi set meal", it seems that most customers opt for the beloved "Katsudon". The restaurant prioritizes local produce, utilizing their own grown konjac potatoes and locally sourced white miso.
20230715 - a lovely restaurant just located on the way to Tabayama village. What they served Soba noodles and some typical Japanese meals. I had fried pork rice with egg on the top today. It’s very delicious and also the price is fairly reasonable (¥950). This is a small restaurant so the seats are not so many. If you came kind of late, you might need to wait for a seat for a while.

We are so lucky to have been able to visit Shimakatsu. The dishes were so fresh, and the atmosphere was so calming. Yes, we do have to wait for the food, but it is truly worth the wait.

The restaurant bis run by an old grandpa and grandma, I had a seasonal set that has all the seasonal vegetables, it's absolutely tasty !!
Shu-Yuan C — Google review
Simply fantastic food for a great price. It is a huge shame they are closing for good, but the owners are very elderly. Been running the place since the 1950s.
Zsolt V — Google review
Great food, but be ready to wait a little, since it's only the owners, a cute old couple.

(Translated by Google) I visited this place as a lunch spot while sightseeing around Lake Okutama. When I entered the store, I remembered that I had seen the atmosphere somewhere before, and I was surprised to see that it was a place that appeared on Zeppan Road. The store was full and we had to wait for a while before entering. Almost everyone had the popular yammeshi set meal for 1,000 yen, but since I wanted to eat river fish, I ordered the Yamame set meal for 1,500 yen. The set meal includes 8 items including boiled dishes, pickles, and fried eggplant. It also comes with one grated yam, which is colorful. The main dish, the yamame trout, was large in size, plump in texture, and very salty. Also rice and miso soup. I also enjoyed the small bowls with a variety of flavors. Since it was such a large portion, I didn't have to refill the rice. I rated this dish at a ✩5, including cost performance, at a tourist destination deep in the mountains.

(Translated by Google) I went for a drive to the restaurant featured in the 11th episode of TV Tokyo's late-night drama, Zetmeshi Road, and visited for the second time at around 1pm on a weekday. There were no other customers. There is a parking lot across the street that can accommodate several cars. The first time I went, I had a grated yam set meal and red shiso juice, and this time I ordered a katsudon and red shiso juice. The meat in the katsudon was incredibly soft and delicious! It was nice that there was a konjac ball as a side dish, and the hot miso soup was steaming. The red shiso juice was easy to drink but had a slight sour taste, but it was delicious. I finished eating, but I wasn't full, so I also ordered char siu noodles. It was topped with what I think was chrysanthemum, chopped onions, and char siu, and I thought it was Hachioji ramen. The handmade char siu was also well-seasoned and delicious. This time, it was sunny and I sat by the window, so the direct sunlight was extremely bright. It's far away, at the border between Tokyo and Osaka, but it's a restaurant that makes you want to come back to eat again.
