Khon Kaen in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Khon Kaen, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Khon Kaen offers a more relaxed, authentic slice of Thai city life than the major tourist hubs, with easygoing streets, lakeside parks, and a strong university-town atmosphere. Visitors can explore impressive temples such as Wat Nong Wang overlooking Bueng Kaen Nakhon, and learn about the region’s history and culture at the Khon Kaen National Museum. The surrounding province is known for dinosaur fossil sites like Phu Wiang National Park and traditional silk-weaving villages. Add in lively night markets and distinctive Isan cuisine, and Khon Kaen becomes a rewarding base for discovering northeastern Thailand.
With favorites like Quinn's One & Only Indian Restaurant, Blue’s Bar Club & Restaurant Khon Kaen, and Phrathat Kham Kaen, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like ตี๋คอหมูย่าง and Sizzler - Central Khonkaen so you can get the best taste of Khon Kaen while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Central Khon Kaen is a bustling hub of activity, offering a wide range of attractions for visitors. One popular spot is the Central Plaza, a massive shopping center with numerous retail and department stores, as well as cafes, restaurants, and a western-style supermarket. The mall also features a cinema, game area, and bowling alley, making it an ideal destination for families. Additionally, the plaza boasts a large playground for children and offers free parking.
The largest building in Khon Kaen, with several floors for parking. Numerous restaurants, bank branches, and shops of all kinds...like everywhere in these top shopping malls!

I yesterday moved to Base heights next to central and parking guys can’t stop blowing whistlers, they should breathe sometimes and someone’s should sleep in peace. I made 1 year army and i didn’t heard any whistles there. Also guessing about many things about life but first stop them , blow if it’s necessary
Alparslan D — Google review
It's very old and no longer modern. Shopping isn't much fun. It feels sterile, even though it's run down. The food court is at the very end on the fourth floor. You really have to walk 200 meters. It's dirty and outdated, but the food, at least the Pad Thai, is delicious. I'd rather go to Chanthaburi or Pattaya; they're good. This is my first and last visit.
Michael C — Google review
I went to this department store mainly for Starbucks. Normally, I avoid department stores because they’re crowded and noisy, but I didn’t mind this one at all. It wasn’t crowded, had a pleasant atmosphere, and offered a good selection of brands. I’ll definitely be coming back.
Lita S — Google review
It is a department store that is the heart of Khon Kaen province. If you feel that it's hard to find food that suits your taste. Of course, there are all the restaurants you've eaten at in Bangkok. Products can be purchased as if you were in Bangkok. Just

Probably Khon Kaens largest mall in the city. A good range of both lower end prices and brand named goods. Has a cinema and fitness centre. Two eating food halls, as well as, a range of restaurants. Many of which seem to be serving Japanese food. Lots of parking but on busy days can be difficult to find a space. Like Saturday and Sunday or a holiday.

It is good to have Central mall in Khon Kaen. This is the best shopping center in the city.

City Pillar Shrine or San Lak Muang is a significant religious site in Khon Kaen, located near the Central shopping center and the Pullman's hotel. It serves as the spiritual center of the city and is a place where locals come to pray for stability, security, and success within the city. The shrine houses the City Pillar and features elaborate Thai and Chinese temple structures surrounded by beautiful gardens.

An interesting mix of Chinese and Thai Temples. It also has a lot of seats in a small garden, if you would like to take a rest. Not really worth a special visit, but nice to stop by, take a rest in the garden, or walk through it, if you happen to be in the area. It seems to be quite an active temple with a steady stream of people coming to make donations and worship here.
Angie — Google review
This place is 5 minutes walk from central plaza depending on your walking speed. This place is clean and well maintained. The shrine white colour roof is peculiar when watched from Kosa hotel room and it stands out among the rest. A combination of Thai and Chinese temple on the same ground. And there's a beautiful garden beside the shrine where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the town. This garden is adorned by colourful flowers and plant. On the other side of the shrine, there's a small building where you can do prayers and offering to the Buddha. Just donation a 20B and you'll be supplied with the necessities.

A major attraction in Khon Kaen, the city Shrine has delightful gardens, statues and the city pillar itself within the temple. There are worshipers here day and night, but if you are simply a tourist, it is a peaceful place offering great photo opportunities - particularly at night. The buildings, statues and trees are brightly illuminated at night. It is located just a short walk from the central 'farang' area and Pullman hotel. Highly recommended, especially after sunset.

Flea & Street Markets
Khon Kaen walking street is a vibrant market that offers a more relaxed and authentic Thai-style shopping experience compared to other touristy markets. The festive atmosphere is enhanced by Chinese lanterns adorning the entire market, where local sellers offer handmade items like photo frames, t-shirts, handbags, and postcards. The market features separate zones for consumer products and seasonal food, with fair prices and a diverse range of goods.
Shop till you drop, 'Saturday night (market) fever' is here. Heaps and oodles more, food, glorious food!. You will be tempted by tasty local Thai treats, as well as farang style cuisine, dine-in or takeaway, as you please. If you are in Khon Kaen City on a Saturday night, then may I suggest that this is a fantastic spot for you to explore. Bring your walking shoes and enjoy the vibe ...

The famous street market of Khonkaen prefecture. All of shop are local, basic and naturally. The zoning is separate by consumers product and food products, you can find the seasonal food in this street food. The price is very fair. Good vibes. If you are the traveller, I recommended to come.

Kk walking street now having event from 1-12 Dec. Admission and parking is free. Highly recommended for evening walk, as there's many streetfood and go for photos as night there's light as well.
Ohla R — Google review
Maybe the Covid scare & restrictions have made this Saturday night event dismal and not special. No place to sit and eat your food from the vendors and lacks a happy atmosphere. Maybe a live band would help.
William H — Google review
A lot of booths or stores in this walking street. You also can buy puppies here. For Muslim, you can find halal food store that selling yellow rice and chicken. Don't worry about car park because a lot of space around there.

Nestled conveniently near the city center, this lively market transforms a section of Ruen Rom Road into a food lover's paradise. Here, you'll find an array of street vendors offering delicious Isaan specialties like sai grok (fermented sausage), fried chicken with sticky rice, and mouthwatering pork satay.
Food, glorious food. Great selection of street food, anything you want is here. Trying to leaving with just one serve is impossible. Some clothes etc... are available and a 7/11 at the entrance is convenient.

Buddhist temple
Pilgrimage place
Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon, also known as Wat Nong Wang, is a stunning pagoda-style Buddhist temple located in Khon Kaen, Thailand. This impressive structure features 9 receding levels culminating in a soaring golden spire. Situated just 10 minutes from the local bus station, the temple is renowned for its association with the city's dinosaur fossils.
Calm & inviting , Life stories/ lessons in art and carved reliefs on every floor. 162 steps to arrive at # 9 level // fresh air, nice breeze , birdseye view of Bueng Kaen Nakorn & beyond to most of Khon Kaen City.
Greg A — Google review
I was not able to go to the top due to the maintenance work. The temple is beautiful and palm trees around it and it shows the history and culture of Khon Kaen. As a tamil I can see a lot of cultural similarities Saiva Tamils and ancient Khon Kaen people.
Live M — Google review
Normally, you can got to the top (8th floor) and have a view over city and nature. But due to construction, at the moment you can only access the lower four floors. The view is still nice and the building itself is also worth a visit (beautiful carvings ind doors and windows as well as animal mosaics). If it is wet, be careful on the tiled floor, it might be slippery.
Viki S — Google review
Beautiful, well kept temple with a lot of activities inside. Also a nice place to buy souvenirs related to local religion. Definitely go upstairs to the 4th floor. You have 360° view over the city.
Yannick P — Google review
Strange mix of religions going on here. Not very Bhuddist at all but interesting. The main goal here is giving away as much of your money as you can to bring you luck and wealth.....yes, I know, its silly but entertaining. Sadly only the first 3 levels of the temple were open due to renovations, so we didnt get the views of Knon Kean.
Gerry H — Google review
Amazing temple once again. This is very big compared to many others and the roof is build in 9 layers which makes the building pretty unique. Extremely beautiful murals inside the temple and many golden statues in all sizes. A top 10 temple in Thailand for me personally
Kasper H — Google review
Most beautiful temple in Khon Kaen my 1st visit will not be last since will be moving here from Chiang Mai in September. There is some work going on currently so was unable to go higher than 4th floor but still fantastic views.

If you're venturing into the Isan region of Thailand, you absolutely must try "ตี๋คอหมูย่าง," or grilled pork neck. This dish is a weekend specialty at Gai Yang Rabeab Khao Suan Kwang, where I had the pleasure of indulging in its rich flavors. The meat is delightfully fatty and tender, perfectly complemented by their zesty nam jim chili dipping sauce.
Great pork dishes close to the big hotels. Loved the grilled pork neck in particular 😋

Great value food. Every menu has grilled pork neck as a main ingredient. Tom yum is the best as larbmoo.

I stayed in Khon Kaen for 2 nights, came twice in the evening (7PM for example), but this shop is closed, twice. The second time I finally got a chance to talk to the staffs (non English speakers), saying that it was all sold out for the day. In addition to that, they are closed on Saturdays as well. I’d really love to taste their food but unfortunately couldn’t. The reason why I choose to leave a 3-star review, not about the food, but the inconvenience.
Rosie H — Google review
Taste is good for the price, sometimes superbly done, especially on-the-rice menus. Humomgous amount of food for a plate, easily one dish belly fill-up. Free side veggie for everyone. Overall a great joint for E-Sarn style food.

the place is good and easy to find, the food is good but the tomyum i give 7/10 because not salty and not spicy :(

Steak house
Sizzler is a well-established casual eatery renowned for its selection of steak, burgers, and seafood. It offers an extensive salad bar that is highly recommended. While the prices can be on the higher side, particularly for steaks, there is great value in ordering the unlimited salad option. This includes a wide variety of vegetables, mixed salads, soups, spaghetti, fruits, and desserts.
fantastic experience and fantastic food with good service and good prices. i will deffently come back til this place for a good steak and a good time.
Jonn M — Google review
As is usual for and our trips back home to Khon Kaen. We always have to make a trip to Sizzler. It is not just in Thai communities but Korean as well. Go to LA and will find this to be true in Koreatown. They have changed the menu somewhat and now offer chicken and Italian dishes as well. I always enjoy it, and of course, I love the salad bar and the mushroom soup. The variety of drinks, especially the mango smoothie, is great. I had the new steak pieces with hot grilling iron, and my husband had a new item with steak and grilled chicken. Both were very good. Cannot wait for the next visit.
AM T — Google review
I have given 4 stars across the board. I have been a few time and on time was very good another time i waited long time for service. No plates at the salad bar for 20 minutes. When asked got the comment they are coming. I ordernside dishes with my main course which were never served. Thw refill soda took more than 30 minutes to refill after empty, the beef was over cooked. I mentioned to the manager the issues and no real response, maybe a language barrier or the staff juat having a bad day. Will try again and see if better or the same
Grant C — Google review
Good food, great salad bar. You can go on weekday and it will be cheaper
李再龙 — Google review
Very good as well as the meal itself, you also get a slice of buttered bread. Plus unlimited use of the salad bar which is very well stacked with a variety of vegetables and fruit with sauces.
Scott W — Google review
Always predictable with its cleanliness, menu selection, and great trained efficient staff and salad bar. —But I always find the prepared food from the kitchen a hit or miss, depending on the kitchen cooks in all of Sizzlers chain restaurants. My fried shrimp was almost burnt & the Au Gratin shrimp was horrible. ( Of course it didn’t match the photo in the menu 555)
William H — Google review
I miss their Caesar salad and their chicken, apricot mixed green salad so I had to make do and choose from what they had. The salads, soup and spaghetti are good. Wish they would offer a marinara sauce fof the spaghetti.Glad they have grated parmessan cheese...that's a plus. Love their cheese toast as one slice comes w/ your salad and I ordered a side of 2 slices xtra for I believe 60 baht ? They have mini desserts which are normally chocolate mousse and jello . Easy to eat here as there are so many reasons to come to Central Khon Kaen so a stop on the 4th floor at Sizzler is welcomed ! / Update , such a relaxing and comfortable space. Many health conscious food choices. I enjoyed a bacon cheeseburger with fries and a salad bar, delicious ! I return every 2 months or so. Clean environment. Attentive staff, they do a wonderful job !

Blue's Bar Club & Restaurant in Khon Kaen offers an outstanding morning meal at a fantastic price with a friendly server and internet access. The total cost, including gratuity, is 350 baht. Customers can order à la carte for a customized experience; my spouse enjoyed the omelette. Although there is no air conditioning indoors, there are fans available outside with a roof overhead.
Love this place to eat. Menu is excellent and food is always hot and cooked to order. The big breakfast (my favourite) is outstanding! My wife and I eat here at least 3 times a week.....and i have yet to have a better Sunday lunch (English style) anywhere in Khon Khon. And a word for the lovely ladies who work so hard. They are attentive without being overwhelming and the expats clearly respect this.

A good sized bar-restaurant, with tables both inside and outside in the entrance area. A full menu is available, with both Western and Thai food, along with plenty of good drinks. The food was tasty, and was served by friendly staff. Parking is available in the street past the place, or in the surrounding area.

A pleasant place for breakfast, good food, good service and plenty of room. Not very busy at 9:00am but to be expected here. Prices have gone up since I was last in Khon Kaen but that was about 3 years ago so pretty standard. I ordered the English breakfast (hold the mushrooms and tomato)

5 stars for the excellent Sunday lunch I had yesterday, big portion of roast pork, Yorkshire puds and various veggies. Only just managed to finish it but the meat was really good.

Had a great breakfast here - including Cumberland sausages! Whilst not exactly Cumberland sausages, they were certainly very good English style sausages! Price was 145 baht for 2 Cumberland sausages, 2 pieces of bacon, fried egg and toast. There are similar priced ones that also include a free coffee or tea. And many different choices from around 100 - 200 baht. Unfortunately the coffee machine was not working when I went, so had to go elsewhere for coffee, but overall it was a good breakfast and the service was good too. Point to improve - would be nice if they gave you a glass of water. And fix the coffee machine and/or get filter coffee in the meantime.

Wish we had this in Bangkok. Excellent breakfast, excellent price, excellent waitress, and wifi. 350 baht including tip. I ordered ala carte so got exactly what I wanted and wife ordered omelette. No AC at breakfast but fans outside and had roof. Food was absolutely great. Inside of the restaurant looks clean and modern. Pool table. Highly recommended. Had breakfast twice, great both times. Had Thai dinners our first night and also great. Had a beef burger on second night......can't recommend the burger. Go with that Thai garlic chicken...out of this world.

Local style breakfast in the middle of the downtown. I love their "Khai Krata" which is a sunny-side fried eggs served in a little pan with chinese sausage and local style sausage. Sprinkle a pinch of pepper and soy sauce makes it taste perfect (to me personally)!! Locals may say there're other choices for breakfast, but this one is my cup of tea where I try to have breakfast everytime ai visit Khon Kaen.
Siwapon L — Google review
Amazing breakfast, possibly the best Thai breakfast I’ve had (since I’m not a fan of having rice & curry for breakfast). If you are in Khon Kaen then you must visit Aim Oat at least once. The bread and sausage with spicy sauce is particular good.

If you are looking for breakfast in khon kaen I do recommend this restaurant. I have been here since I was child! Very good one!

Tasty local place for breakfast. We ordered fried egg with local sausages, Chinese soup with meats (it does come with coagulated pig blood, so if that's not your thing you may not wanna order that), sausage buns and Vietnamese noodles - they were all tasty. Coffee is instant coffee though Verdict: good place for early morning breakfast if you want something local

Wanted to visit this place for a long time but quite disappointed when had breakfast here for the first time. The vietnamese noodle was ok but not great in anyways. The steamed noodle rolls are ready-made and not even hot.

Day 2

West side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the west side side of town. Start the day off with Ton Tann Market, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Dino Water Park. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

It stands out from conventional night markets with its upscale vibe featuring small fashion stores alongside a diverse range of food vendors. The market boasts a vibrant atmosphere with live bands and performances, making it an ideal spot for a night out.
Ton Tann Market is the central food hub of Khon Kaen, featuring a variety of delicious restaurants with a great atmosphere. It also has a shopping zone for household items and clothing, as well as a street food area offering diverse culinary options. There is also a dedicated zone for watching sports and listening to music. I really love it and had a great experience—I will definitely come back again! #tontannmarket #hilightkhonkaen #nightmarket #shopping

This market is divided into different sections for food and shopping, and even has a beer garden. The seating areas are well-maintained, with staff frequently cleaning to keep everything tidy. There's ample parking and clean restrooms, making it a good spot for families or groups of friends. Located right on Mittraphap Road, it's a convenient stop before reaching Khon Kaen city. With dishes starting at just 50 baht, it’s a great place to hang out and unwind with friends or family.

I used to live in KKC and visited Ton Tann frequently before Covid. This was my first time back since Covid. Ton Tann has developed so much. It’s brilliant! This is a must visit in Khon Kaen. I recommend the Jim Jum shop! Really delicious.

Great Place to have a good time. Small stalls to eat all kinds of food. Open market to buy. Sometimes live music 🎶👍

Haps night market in Khon Kaen for food. Shopping not that recommended. Spacious eating area with so many stalls spoilt for choices. Had a Grilled pork neck with rice and a papaya salad. There were a few spots with different live bands to chill. And beautiful beer ladies to buy beer from while watching soccer matches.

We basically went there every night for a week. Always nice vibes live music and good food for everyone. There are so many shops where you can find anything you want. My daughter had spectacles made in 30 minutes at reasonable prices. There is a resident artist who will do your portrait in charcoal starting at 200 baht. This is in August 2024. I had a great time there and will go there every time I visit Khonkaen.

Tontan Market has always been, and will always be, a cherished memory for me. It offers a wide range of food choices, from street snacks to delicious Isan cuisine.

Along the stalls where you can shop for clothes, what is a must try is the delicious food from the central food court. There is plenty of selection along with live music and giant screen for football fans. It maybe be a bit noisy but it is worth a visit.

Buddhist temple
Wat Nong Waeng is an impressive Buddhist temple located in Khon Kaen, Thailand. The temple features gilded statues, intricate mosaics, and offers panoramic views from its nine-tiered balconies. Situated just 10 minutes from the local bus station, this iconic landmark is known for its unique architecture and cultural significance in the region. Visitors can also explore the city's fossil attractions as Khon Kaen is renowned for its fossils in Thailand.
Wat Nong Waeng is a very unique temple, unlike any I've seen before. The surrounding area is also quite nice, with a lake and a park where you can stroll around or escape the city's heat. They often prepare food for visitors, so donations are always welcome. This is a must-see if you are in Khon Kaen.
UEM — Google review
Beautiful smaller temple located in between some of the main temples in Khon Kaen. The temple ground were under renovation when I visited but the temples itself are still a beauty to behold. Worth paying a visit and spending 10-15 minutes here
Kasper H — Google review
Wat Nong Waeng Phra Aram Luang is a famous temple in Khon Kaen province and is recognized as a royal temple. It’s a large temple with many parking lot available for visitors. Tourists are expected to dress modestly and respectfully, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered. Women are not allowed to wear short skirts above the knee or sleeveless tops. Before entering the pagoda, which houses sacred relics, all visitors are required to remove their shoes. The temple provides cloth bags for carrying shoes inside, as theft has occurred in the past. Visitors are advised to place their shoes in the provided bags and carry them while exploring the pagoda. The ground floor of the pagoda serves as a space for making merit and features several donation boxes. The interior is intricately decorated and visually stunning. Tourists can also climb to the top of the pagoda, which has nine floors in total. The stairs are steep, so caution is advised. From the ninth floor, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Khon Kaen city.
Donlawat C — Google review
This is my 2nd time here and it is one of the most beautiful temples in Khon Kaen. There is a stair access to the 9 levels of pagoda but it might be too steep for some people. It was very crowded when we visited.

Wat Nong Wang (วัดหนองแวง) is Khon Kaen city’s biggest, most important temple, and also its one must-see tourist attraction. It was founded in 1789, the same year the city was settled, though there are no old buildings left. It became a royal temple in 1984. About 55 monks and 225 novices live here. It’s ordinary in most regards, except for the stunning nine-story Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon, a stupa unlike any other in Thailand. Many of the links below take you to other articles explaining the art in detail. Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon The ground floor is open 6am-5pm and floors 2-9 are open 8am-4.30pm. Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon stupa was built to celebrate both the king’s golden jubilee (celebration of 50 years on the throne) and the two hundredth birthday of Khon Kaen city. It is 50m long on the side and 80m tall and has nine floors because he was King Rama 9. Construction was started in 1990 and it was inaugurated in 1996. The idea for the stupa came from the highly respected Luang Paw Koon Kantigo, the then abbot. The design was inspired by the Eiffel Tower and the Shwedagon Pagoda, both of which he saw while travelling. The most important of the abbot’s ideas, however, is the stupa’s curved shape, chosen to be that made by a hanging fishing net – called a catenary curve in physics. People’s ashes are kept in the stupas at each of the four corners and the naga-topped wall around the stupa. Before construction, when this area was still rice field, a naga came to tell a high-ranking monk in a dream that there was a naga breathing hole where the stupa was going to be built. So, the stupa was built about 10m from the original intended location and these naga were incorporated into the design. The shape of the top part of the stupa was inspired by Phra That Kham Kaen stupa (notice the redented corners) north of the city and has a golden-colored vine pattern similar to that on the very important Phra That Phanom stupa in Nakhon Phanom province. Ground Floor The temple’s center of activity is the stupa’s ground floor, which has a Buddha relic inside a chamber with a nine-spired roof. Next to it is a life-like resin statue of Luang Paw Koon Kantigo, the previous abbot (Unusual, because these are normally made after an abbot has died, but this one was put here many years before.), and in the back is a copy of the Chinnarat Buddha (from Phitsanulok); two copies of Phra Kaew (the Emerald Buddha), one green and one orange; and a baby Buddha. They are facing west, rather than the usual east, because the original Chinnarat Buddha also faces west. Along the northern wall is a table with 108 alms bowls (for donating 108 coins) and another full of daily Buddhas. The number 108 was important in ancient India and so it is found in many Buddhist stories, most importantly the 108 signs of perfection to show that he was the Buddha – this is also why there are often 108 symbols on the soles of many large Buddha footprints.

The main Temple of Khonkaen called Wat - Nong - Wang (in Thai). There is 9 floor with closely pyramid shape. All decoration is very Thai, which beautiful, charming and richy by the golden colour of gold. The activity is walk around the floor then step up to the top of temple. The location is beside of kaennakorn swamp that very massive impress by the top view from the top of Nongwang temple.
Wantana P — Google review
As a non believer I can review just the multi storey building. Once you get the last floor you will see an amazing 360 degrees view. The stairs are not easy to climb because the steps are high and narrow.
Giuseppe G — Google review
One of my favourite Temples in Thailand and definitely in the city of Khon Kaen. This Temple is a Khon Kaen land mark and tourist destination. It hosts 9 levels each with artworks, artefacts, shrines, and information much like a museum. Each level represents the ascension to enlightenment and there is a 360 degree view of the surrounding city on every level. The ground floor is the main floor where locals come to greet the monks and pray. I really like this Temple because of its beautiful architecture and surrounding grounds, the view of the city from each level, the artworks, artefacts and information scattered all around. Artworks include paintings that depict traditional every day Thai life, correct behaviour as taught by the scriptures as well as the story of the life of the The Buddha carved into the doors and window shutters. It is easy to spend a whole day here getting lost wandering around discovering new area's while viewing the surrounding city from one of the best vantage points in Khon Kaen.

Bueng Kaen Nakhon Public Park, located southeast of the center of Khon Kaen, is a serene and picturesque area that offers a perfect escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The 2.5-mile path around the lake provides an enjoyable opportunity for walking or running amidst beautiful natural surroundings, including trees and temples. Exploring the shrines, temples, and nearby Hall of Culture and Heritage can easily extend your visit beyond half an hour.
Really enjoyed strolling around the lake. The night market is something you have to explore with mostly Korean food on offer. The basketball courts are all busy as well as the other sporting codes. Fantastic vibes and ideal for families or for a couple enjoying a late stroll. The market closes at 8pm so go early

Water & Amusement Parks
Dino Water Park in Khon Kaen, Thailand is a dinosaur-themed aquatic park suitable for all ages. It features a wave pool, giant slides, and rafting activities. The park is the largest water park in northeastern Thailand and boasts huge and exciting water attractions assembled and maintained by professional staff members.
Excellent place to come and hang with kiddos!!! The kids slide area (pictured here) is fantastic, and really feels newly updated! The wave pool is huge, and super fun, too!! Right now you can pay only ฿200 for the wave pool and the giant kids play zone pictured here for the day. Then, it’s only an extra 200 baht for three big slides, but we had so much fun at the two previously mentioned spots, we didn’t even need to do that. Yes, as others mentioned in previous reviews, there are a lot of slides closed, probably a COVID season casualty, but the stuff that’s open is great, and a really great value! We’ll be back, Dino Water Park!

All coasters are out of function, except the ones in the kids water land and the wave pool is operating (maybe because of the season?) I'm sure the kids gonna have a blast of fun, but that would also be the only reason for going here (to drain your kids energy), not much for adult when all the coasters is closed. Food and drink options limited, but okay. You are not allowed to bring food and drinks. Current price: 200 adult (foreign and Thai) kids under 90cm get in for free. If no swimming half price.
Flemming S — Google review
The place is closed 5 days per week! The Google site says it is open every day! Lady at ticket counter said no! Place only open Saturday and Sunday! My daughter was so sad! What a was of my time and of my taxi money. Avoid this place so that you avoid disappointment. Please change your opening times.
David B — Google review
Have given this place one star purely because unable to put zero stars. A total rip off, 602 baht entrance for 2persons, no slides open, the water is so dirty as is all the tiles in the pool. The water in your local village lake will be cleaner. Also at midday the music is pumping out at god knows what level, we are not at some rave club. In all my wife were in and out of the place within 10minutes, what a dump, should not be open.Avoid
Rob C — Google review
Very bad experiencee My mom went there last year and had a good experience but now the water has algae in it and its not cleann only kids section is open and wave pool is also open and it is also dirty. The had many good slides and rides but most of them are closed. Especially no lockers, the lockers are broken and rusted.
Rudrajith Y — Google review
Horrible with zero maintenance, seemingly just a last ditch money-grab. Only two areas were half operational and those had crusty old birdshit on the slides, dead geckos, green water and algae moss growing in the pool bottoms. Drove 90km, paid for 5 tickets and left after 15 minutes. This place shouldn't be kept open in this state.
JJ M — Google review
As opposed to some of the other reviewers here, I fully understand why this park does not have many visitors - it is a straightforward scam! We paid full price at the entrance, to find out many of the attractions are not in operation any more. Entrance fee is already quite expensive (THB 500 for us per person) while the park has certainly seen better times. On top of that, you get this feeling they are taking any chance to rip you off after you have already entered the park. Of course a place to sit for a family is not included in the entrance fee! The so-called 'cabana', a few wooden benches with a table and roof will cost you THB 400 and another THB 200 deposit (no idea why), wood splinters in your hands and feet included. You basically have no other choice but to rent this thing anyways, I mean who wants to sit in the sun for several hours at 33 degrees! Some of the waterslides are a safety risk to me, at least I got my back injured on one of them. Food and water are unnecessarily expensive, and of course you cannot bring your own inside. They are charging THB 20 for a small bottle of water. I hope some people will read this review before going, so I can save you the money, time and help you avoid exposing your children to this unsafe place.

An old place that is famous in Khonkaen. Next generation tried to start it again but nope nope nope. What a let down. This have a lot of potential but crashing down on all aspect of restaurant starting from the service. They are short staffed (or their staff is just lazy I don't know) but from the start we had to walk in to theur huge space with empty table and chairs to their deepest dining zone. Even when there's staffing booth before the zone no one come to greeted us. I have to walk to them to get their attention. They saw us from the front but I don't know why they don't walk to us to show us their available zone. After I told them I reserved some table already they seemed surprised and walked us to the table. Guess what, the table that they put it together to accommodate us but another party already sat down in them. What the heck is going on about reservation. Am I mistaken about the dedinition or what? Anyway the staff seemed upset that she had to make new connecting table. Anyway, their seats are old and uncomfortable. The food is okay and some of them tasted good but mostly just normal Chinese cuisine. A lot of potential. Could be the new landmark if they really renovate all of them and have good system amd staffing. They haven't even repainted the old restaurant sign

Stylish and colourful bar and restaurant in the city centre of Khon Kaen's which offers live music and free parking lots in the backyard. The cuisine is Thai with a touch of fusion and the food is excellent. The service is kind, friendly and fast. The terrace/garden could be a bit more colourful as it lacks both plants and lights, though. Overall, a good place for spending a beautiful evening.

Ambience: well decorated and well maintained, spacious, we walked here from Pullman so can't comment on ease of parking. Live music outside starts around 20:30. Food: good variation, a mix between Thai and Western cuisines, good quality, well prepared and taste above average, although the order could take a long time. Drinks: good selection of beers (can), there is no wine list one had to walk to a special room to choose the wine. House wine is from a box... haa haa haa. Value for money: definitely 😁 yes.

First impression was from a Facebook group post - the food shown in the post literally made me hungry enough to water at the mouth. Second impression was, wow, great location - centrally located in Khon Kaen City, Thailand. Then I went inside. I'll try to keep this brief. I had good first impressions before I entered the restaurant, and was even more impressed when I went inside. It is a relatively new location for King Kong Restaurant Khon Kaen, and it has been beautifully renovated and furnished. Very comfortable, family style restaurant offering both Thai and "foreign" food - i.e. burgers, lasagna, enchiladas... an impressive menu available here on Google Maps or on Facebook. Then I was greeted by the proprietor, Mr. Jim Kong. A very friendly, cheerful guy. He made me feel welcome. I have no complaints whatsoever as to the place itself, the friendly staff, or the service. To me, good service has always been equally important, if not more important, than the taste of the food itself and the portion size. From this my first experience of the restaurant, I have NO complaints. The food was delicious. The portions were sufficient to fill me up and satisfy my craving for a REAL burger. If I could give this restaurant a 6th star, I would. As I said to Jim as I was leaving, 2 thumbs up, 5 stars, no question. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Happy service and good food. Although we visited close to closing time, there was no hesitation or reluctance in serving us. Although people have personally commented that the pricing seems to o be on the high side, we were presented with good sized portions and in my estimation worthy of a visit.

Hands down the best place in Khon Kaen for western food. The owners are so obliging and I was amazed that they offered a service where if you didn't fancy eating from the menu (it's all great but if you fancied something you missed from home) you can actually give them a few days notice and if they can source the ingredients they will try to cook it for you at no extra charge. Just a fair agreed price and you're good to go. Brilliant brilliant idea. I ate their three times. Ate off menu twice and asked if they could cook me curried Meatballs with creamy mashed potatoes the third time. They did and it was yummy. Fresh ingredients and cooked just for me. They have a great setup for their opening hours too. They open officialy for dine in on Sundays only but offer take out or delivery nearly every day but if you fancy dining in any day just drop them a message or call them and if they are available they will open up for you to have the whole place to yourself. How's that for service. I even got to choose my own music while we chiller out with a few cold beers and our food.

Day 3

Off the beaten path
For day 3, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Phrathat Kham Kaen. Not quite as popular as Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon (Wat Nong Wang), but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 6 hours.

Phrathat Kham Kaen is a sacred and historical site in Khon Kaen, Thailand. It houses the cremated bone of Buddha and is the center of Buddhist religious activities during specific times. The architecture reflects northeastern style, offering visitors a glimpse into the area's history dating back 2,000 years. The temple staff often perform traditional North Eastern songs, adding to the immersive experience.
it's most important pagoda of Khon Kaen city. it's underrenovation for changing gold plates ,lining the top of pagoda.Renovation is planned to be accomplished in early March 2025. there is Pavillion by the pond, where herd of fish swim around.

This is a minor pilgrimage site for Isaan. The main chedi is a handsome structure with a plaster body and a gold finial. Alongside, we have an Isaan sim with mural paintings of turn-of-the-century policemen. There is no entrance charge.

I love this temple, it's great for meditating, especially in the morning. The people there are really nice, and the temple supporters are, too. It's close to the city and easy to get in Khon Kean. The scenery and the sculptures are beautiful.

A good place to recite the history of Buddhism in Khon Kaen. Visitors can see the Chedi with Isan style architecture that is different from Thai other regions. No entrance fee required for visitors. Make sure you take off your shoes while entering the Chedi area.

The temple is a notable historical landmark within the city. A visit is highly recommended for those traveling to Khon Kaen, a province known for its welcoming atmosphere towards all visitors, including international guests. The local populace is particularly known for their gracious hospitality.

Wat Thung Setthi is a popular attraction in Khon Kaen, known for its distinctive gold and blue exterior, unlike the typical gold and red colors of other temples. The temple features beautiful white statues scattered throughout the premises. Located near Route 230, this relatively new Thai Buddhist temple translates to 'Temple Millionaires Field,' hinting that making merit here will bring prosperity.
It is a very beautiful temple with a spacious area. We visited during the day when it was quite sunny, and there were no tourists, allowing us to take stunning photos. Admission is free. Highly recommended for capturing beautiful pictures! However, the temple is quite far from the city. We took a Grab ride, which took quite a while, but it was definitely worth it.

I recently had the chance to visit a temple that turned out to be one of the most peaceful and calming places I’ve been to in a while. The entire atmosphere was so serene, surrounded by lush greenery and open space—it really felt like a peaceful escape from the city. At first, the entrance was a little confusing; it felt like I might have taken a wrong turn because the road leading in wasn’t clearly marked. But once I arrived, I was amazed at how beautiful and well-maintained the temple grounds were. There’s a parking area available, which is really helpful, especially if you’re driving. I visited around midday, and I have to say—it was extremely hot. But even with the heat, the experience was enjoyable because the temple has a lot of trees and shaded areas that help cool things down a bit. They also provide free umbrellas for visitors, which was such a thoughtful touch. I’d still recommend bringing your own if you can, just in case all the shared ones are being used. The temple architecture is stunning. As I walked around the grounds, I couldn’t help but stop to admire all the different statues, shrines, and details in the structures. Each piece of art and sculpture felt meaningful and beautifully designed. There was so much attention to detail, and I found myself spending quite a bit of time just quietly observing everything. It was like being in an outdoor art gallery—but filled with spiritual energy and tradition. One nice surprise was a donation point where you could contribute toward free ice cream for visitors. That small gesture made a big impact, especially on such a hot day! I also appreciated the friendly staff and volunteers helping out with the traditional offerings, like candles and bells. One of them told us we didn’t have to remove our shoes on the hot pavement since the sun had made the ground almost too hot to walk on—but of course, we removed them before entering the sacred area upstairs to show respect. Once I climbed the stairs to the upper level of the temple, the breeze made everything feel cooler. The wind blowing through that high spot made it a perfect place to sit for a moment, take a deep breath, and really enjoy the view and peaceful surroundings. Despite the midday heat, the whole experience felt worthwhile and refreshing for the spirit. Visiting this temple was definitely one of the highlights of my trip. It’s not just about seeing a beautiful place, but also about feeling calm, connected, and inspired. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a meaningful stop on their journey.

Some parts of this wat remind me of a church, maybe it is because of the big cupola.... And yet on top of the cupola, there is this "shade/umbrella" of the Buddhist temple. For me it is a nice "baroque" design.

Joakim H — Google review
I came here on a bit of a last minute whim when Mama wanted to stop by to pray for a bit. Why not. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and the main temple sitting in what appears as the middle of a small lake is impressive. I really don't have much to tell with respect to the cultural meaning of the place as everything is in Thai only however luckily there are a number of Thai reviews here that give you a bit of background. From my perspective many of the statues were very unusual depicting strange little creatures somewhere between human and NOT, seemingly guarding the shrines on the 4 corners of the main temple. My wife new little about the temple but mentioned that these are children caught between living in the real world and spirit world. In general it is a great place for some photos and the awesome beauty of the entire grounds make for a nice place to check out.

Wat That

4.6
(614)
Buddhist temple
Wat That Khon Kaen is a remarkable temple located at the opposite end of Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake from Wat Nong Wang. The temple features a soaring stupa and ubosot, which are often mistaken for classic Isan/Lao design but are actually in the Central Thai style. The vast and empty interior of the temple is predominantly red, with a large golden Buddha as its centerpiece.
Very big and beautiful pagoda and also a very beautiful temple. Khon Kaens temples are indeed amazing each in their own way. This is again a temple that must not be missed if you are in Khon Kaen. I didn’t really see any temple digs when I was there so I would say it’s safe to go also with kids
Kasper H — Google review
While the design of the temple is the same like elsewhere (seemingly) The main temple is really huge. And it does make one feel very miniscule.
Chin T — Google review
Wat That Khon Kaen While Wat Nong Wang is Khon Kaen’s largest and most interesting temple, and the city’s only must-see attraction, Wat That (วัดธาตุ) at the other end of Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake is also worth visiting. Its soaring stupa and ubosot, which make a beautiful backdrop to views from across the lake, are frequently described by travel writers as classic Isan/Lao design, but both are actually Central Thai style. Wat That was founded in 1789, at the same time as the city, and is sometimes called Wat That Mueang Gao (Mueang Gao = “Old City”) because of its location. Several stupas were built on the grounds, but over time the temple became neglected and they were all so decayed that nobody was certain which was the original one. It was decided to build a large new stupa over one of the ruined ones. Construction was completed in 1981, and in April of that year Thai Buddhism’s supreme patriarch was scheduled to come for the ceremony to install the Buddha relics, but he had to cancel because there was a coup in Bangkok. Chedi Phra That Nakhon Derm (“Holy Stupa of the Old City”) has a height of 45 meters (for the Buddha living as an enlightened being for 45 years) plus a five-meter tall chat “umbrella” on the top. Unlike most stupas, the interior is open for people to visit. Besides some Buddha relics there’s a copy of the temple’s holy Lao-style Luang Paw Phra Lap Buddha image. Its history is unknown, but it may date from the 16th century. A small wihan on the other side of the temple is currently being built to hold the original. The monks we spoke with told us that the real Luang Paw Phra Lap’s current location is a secret, though one of the stupa’s caretakers told us it’s being held in a bank vault. Intentional or not, the mystery about this image seems to be a good bit of marketing to help raise donations for the temple. A five-sided cloister (these are rarely found in Isan) surrounds the stupa and was included in the design after somebody connected with the temple visited Wat Arun in Bangkok and thought it would be a good idea to have one here. Besides the usual Buddha images, it also houses some fairly tacky fiberglass zodiac animals and a log shrine made from a tree that was cut down during construction of the stupa. The doors are open 8am-6pm. The adjacent three-story tall ubosot, opened in 1969, was originally much shorter, but it was heightened in 1996. It’s kept locked, and it’s so plain inside that it’s not worth the effort to find a monk or novice to get the key. And the last time I went inside the floor was so filthy from bird droppings that the monk and I had to keep our shoes on. There are still signs for Maha Chulalongkorn Rajavidyalaya Buddhist University here, but it has moved to a larger campus outside the city.

Wonderful temple with a huge brown color Chedi opposite. The Temple itself is vast, empty and all red color inside with one big Golden Buddha on one hand. Quick visit.

An oasis of peace and tranquility in the middle of Khon Kaen. Beautiful massive hall with a huge golden Buddha. Look for the dinosaurs in the mural on the opposing wall— quite impressive.
Adam R — Google review
Beautiful temple with nicely built structure in Thai style and there are 9 floors so we need to walk up and can see Khon Kaen city view from the top. Free of charge for all visitors but you can also donate some money for maintaining however it depends on you how much you would like to donate. Not too big parking lot and there are souvenir shops on the ground floor and massage shop nearby and the price is cheap.

A grand temple with meticulous architectural detail. Many locals come here to pray. There is a large collection of old things upstairs but it isn't very well-maintained, which is a real pity. Visitors would have learned learn much more about Buddhism and local culture if some simple descriptions are available.

Wat Pa Thamma Utthayan Located a fair distance from Khon Kaen, just off a major highway, lies a unique destination that is part temple, part theme park, and part zoo. It's a peculiar place that might leave you scratching your head, but its oddity is part of its charm. The journey to this place might cost you around 170bht by taxi, but the entry is free, making it a worthwhile adventure. The 'zoo' element of this place might not be its strongest feature, with its main attractions being chickens and rabbits, and a solitary crocodile. However, the main statues are truly a sight to behold. These beautiful monuments are currently in an area undergoing some serious work, so access might be a bit tricky and you might have to raise your camera a bit to get the perfect shot. But that's not all, there are also Kung Fu Panda statues, Happy Feet ones, and massive gongs that you can have a go at. The temple's atmosphere is serene and peaceful, with several mini man-made waterfalls adding to its tranquility. It's not just one building, but various structures that you can explore. It's like a park, with live animals and enough sights to keep you occupied for several hours. This temple is home to a multitude of Buddhas, scattered all around the area. You can walk around, touch them, and feel a sense of peace and calm. If there are any construction activities going on, you can join in and be a part of the temple's evolution. The place is vast and relaxing. There are many things to do, making it an ideal destination for families with kids. There are beautiful sights to see, like a painted bell and fountains, but the main activity for adults is to simply wander about and enjoy the scenery. You can spend an hour or the whole day here, just let the place capture you. Located just 15 minutes or 12 Km from the city centre, this beautiful and quiet place is perfect for listening to dhumma and praying for Buddha. There are also a lot of activities such as visiting the zoo and enjoying a walk around the green garden. This temple is like no other in Thailand. It has a park-like feel to it, with fountains and waterfalls, baby Buddhas, and a magnificent statue of Kwan Yin who is said to be particularly sensitive and merciful to the prayers of women. There are also other animal figurines and a depiction of the Devil. One of the more unusual sights is a monkey god in a Mickey Mouse suit. There is also an alligator pit. The main area is very pretty and the water features greatly enhance the experience.
Roman M — Google review
This temple is semi outdoor style. Not like the normal temple, which we used to go in other places. There are also lots of Buddha here. The first you will see a giant baby Buddha. Then you can walk through the path, there will be more Buddha you can discover. There are lots of chicken in this area. You can see lovely chickens and chicks walking, finding food together. Since here has lots of trees and really natural, prepare for some bug protection is better. :-)

Very nice place. Worth a visit. Go early and wear a hat. It's very nice to take kids there, take a taxi for 120 to 150 baht from Khon Kaen and enjoy the day there. Have a few restaurants and very very cheap nice coffee places. Live animals, birds and fish feeding.

Khun Jaeng Guay Tiew Pak Mor Kao Wang is a street food restaurant that offers a wide range of unique noodle dishes. The variety of noodles available, such as those with vegetables, corn, and mince pork, make it a standout option for noodle lovers. Despite the long queues during lunchtime and on Grab line, the experience is worth it. The owner is known for being kind and helpful, adding to the enjoyable dining atmosphere.
Simple but good Pak Mor restaurant. The menu is in Thai only, however you can look at the pictures - which are real depictions of what they sell. The owners are very friendly and accommodating to Farang that need a bit longer time to order. The different kinds of Pak Mor are quite interesting: we ordered the veggie sampler platter, which included carrot, corn, cabbage, and morning glory rolls. We also tried the traditional Pak Mor Moo (Pork), which was more to our liking than the vegetable versions. There is free ice and water (self-serve) for customers.

In Halong Bay, there's a charming restaurant located under an old wooden house where you can savor a variety of Vietnamese dishes. The place offers different food stalls and is known for serving the famous Banh Mi sandwich at an affordable price. Visitors have been pleasantly surprised by the reasonable bill and high-quality food, enjoying the upscale ambiance and complimentary desserts.
The food here is really good. I have been here several times but in the the mornings, this time was mid afternoon. Every time has been an enjoyable meal the the layout is very good. One star down mainly due to the senior staff will not assist in serving or assisting a client when the waiter for that particular area is busy. It was a case of looking around for someone else who can help and ends up taking twice a long. Anyway, I certainly recommend the food and drinks and the cost is very reasonable (especially compared to Chiang Mai).

Quinn's One & Only Indian Restaurant in Khon Kaen offers a warm and informative staff who can thoroughly explain the extensive menu. The ambiance is soothing, complemented by soft background music. While the food is satisfying, some dishes could benefit from more herbs and spices for enhanced flavor. Additionally, the spiciness level may not meet expectations. The restaurant boasts appealing decor and ample parking facilities.
Every time I come to Khon Kaen, I have to eat Indian food at this restaurant. The taste is delicious. There are menus to choose from many regions of India. Some menus are very hard to find. The staff are good with service mind. The owner welcomes you in a friendly manner and recommends the menu that you like. For those who have never eaten Indian food before, this restaurant is suitable as a place to start. Then you will love Indian food.

This is a new find for us and what a lovely find it is! The menu is everything we would like to find at a restaurant serving Indian food. The quality and presentation of the food was absolutely exceptional. The chef had certainly paid attention to detail. Quinn, the owner, was attentive and helpful in giving background detail of the ingredients in the dishes we enquired about. Seating was either outside, with abundant fans if required, or inside in the Air-conditioning. All in all a very pleasant relaxed evening. We will definitely make this one the regular places we visit.

Possibly the only Indian restaurant in Khon Kaen. Quinn’s serves a small number of Indian dishes, with most being curries that you can choose between chicken, lamb or vegetarian. These Indian dishes may not be that authentic, but serve the purpose. The surroundings are quiet which is great for weekend dining with family. Staff are not very knowledgeable when it comes to describing the dishes but they are courteous and eager to please. I won’t hesitate to come here again.

The staffs are very welcoming and can thoroughly explain all the menu. The atmosphere is relaxing with soft music playing in background. The foods are satisfying but may need a bit more herbs/spices for taste. Spicy menus may not as spicy as you expect.
