Nokor BaChey temple

4.4
(518)
Buddhist temple
Tour operator
Nokor Bachey Pagoda is situated about 2.2 kilometers from Kampong Cham provincial town along National Road 7, approximately 122 kilometers northeast of Phnom Penh. The temple complex is a blend of old and new architecture and features numerous Apsara carvings. It is believed to have been the headquarters of King Jayavarman VII during the Khmer Empire in the 11th century.
Nokor Bachey Temple is a hidden Khmer gem in Kampong Cham, offering a charming blend of ancient 11th-century structures and a modern Buddhist pagoda nestled within. Its peaceful atmosphere, rich carvings, and relatively untouched vibe make it appealing to history lovers, photographers, and those seeking a quieter spiritual site. However, be aware of variability in entrance fee practices and bring essentials like water—they’re not widely available on-site. For the best experience, aim for early arrival, dress respectfully, and consider pairing your visit with Phnom Pros and Phnom Srei if you're paying for entry.
Em R — Google review
I was informed that the entrance fee was $10, which included access to three additional temples. However, to visit the other temples, we had to drive there, which seemed a bit unusual. The ticket I saw had four pictures on it. Since I was with my Khmer friend, I only had to pay $2.5 for entry to this temple. Is it worth considering the distance from Phnom Penh, which exceeds two hours? Although suitable for a brief walkaround and ideal for photography, there are limited additional offerings. I encourage you to review the accompanying photos and form your own judgment.
Steven W — Google review
Worth a visit in the area to see this temple that is older than Angkor Wat. We were asked to purchase tickets when we arrived with our guide.
Natalie B — Google review
Somewhere to visit in Kampong Cham. Nokor Bachey is an ancient temple with a pagoda built within this temple. I was there with my foreign friend and the police asked foreigners needed to pay 10$ to enter. The ticket is too expensive for a small temple. That's 1/3 of the price to visit Angkor temples in Siem Reap which you can visit many temples. So, he didn't enter.
NIN K — Google review
Beautiful place with the same architecture with Angkor (because they were built at the same time) but we didn't get inside because ticket price is 10$ for foreigner, it's seem doesn't worth it when compare with Angkor ticket. Our next destination is Angkor so we just walk away.
Tùng P — Google review
Very nice location. Our guide told us you need to pay 2,50$ p.P. or 10$ for 4 temples (no discount for all 4?). BUT our hotel and the staff we asked in a restaurant said it's free. There are no official signs whatsoever. And honestly a "tourist police"? Make up your own mind, but I think it's a scam. In the end no one asked us to pay the "entrance fee". Another argument for a scam. Or has the tourist police all together a day off on a regular Monday? Locals, if you read this. Don't try to scam us this way. Put up a donation box and tell us western tourists, a 2$ donation would be welcome for keeping the place clean. Add water and a rented head with it and you can easily get 3-4$ donations. You will see, most people will gladly put more money in.
Fin J — Google review
Historical site without fee. It's not far from Phnom Penh and worth to visit if you don't have any chance to visit Ankor Wat. I visited on my way to go Mondulkiri
J L — Google review
My first time here, even a lot of time visiting Kampong Cham, this catch my eyes to stay on a calm place with olding statue and temple, feel so relax. Come here to see the pagoda and temple if you visit KC.

Wat Nokor

4.2
(34)
Pagoda
Nestled on the outskirts of the city, Wat Nokor is a captivating gem within the ancient Banteay Prey Nokor temple complex. This remarkable site dates back to the late 12th century and showcases stunning Angkorian architecture, distinguished by its unique black sandstone construction—a departure from the more common brick or red sandstone found in other Cambodian temples. Historically significant, it served as a headquarters for King Jayavarman VII during his reign.
The most striking aspect of Wat Nokor is its juxtaposition of past and present. Unlike other ancient sites, it is not merely a relic but a living space—a modern monastery inhabits its hallowed grounds. Orange-robed monks stroll past crumbling arches, their presence a reminder that life persists even amid decay. This convergence of eras calls to mind Tolstoy’s belief in the cyclical nature of existence, where the struggles and triumphs of one generation inevitably give way to those of the next. The atmosphere of Wat Nokor is at once serene and somber. The crickets' song mingles with the distant hum of life beyond the temple walls, creating a melody that seems to echo the very rhythm of the universe. Here, one feels the deep paradox of human existence: the striving for permanence in a transient world. The carvings and spires speak of a people who sought to immortalize their faith, yet their creation now stands as a testament to impermanence, a metaphor for the futility and beauty of human effort.
Dan S — Google review
Beautiful temple! Nokorbachey temple in Kampong Cham province, Wat Nokor is a modern Theravada Buddhist pagoda squeezed into the walls of a 12th-century Mahayana Buddhist shrine of sandstone and laterite.
Private E — Google review
Very peaceful ruins on the outskirts of Kampong Cham. I've been here 3 times now and never seen another tourist there. It's an easy bicycle ride from any downtown hotel and if you come at sunset it's nice and cool and you'll see the bats leaving the temple in a swarm. There are some unique features here that might be worth reading up on. The temple is also surrounded by many stupas that are certainly worth wandering around among.
Banteay P — Google review
We decided to come here instead of other temples because we thought it might be free (reviews didn't suggest otherwise). Instead, after walking through the first entrance, a security guard came over and asked for our tickets. We could have decided to walk away but we paid for the tickets which were very expensive at $10 each. It wasn't worth it. Also it was quite frustrating as it was very clear that locals weren't paying anything (there were lots of people just sitting around and even chilling on their phones in the temple). Apparently tickets used to be $2 at some point according to our TukTuk driver. The tickets also give access to other temples but two of them are miles away and totally impractical to get to within the same journey. We stopped by at the Phnom Srey temples as well but there wasn't much to see there (and you also would have had to pay the $10 fee there as well). Overall would recommend just going straight to the Cheung Kok Ecotourism Village (after organising a tour with Aline who is resident there) and spending the money there on handcrafted products or through a donation. That was a much more enjoyable part of the day.
Simon C — Google review
Would not recommend going to this temple at all. The pictures looked nice but in reality there was rubbish everywhere and it was really small. We had to pay $10 for an official ticket (locals don't pay), which is way too expensive considering the condition of the place.

Restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Kampong Cham, Hao An Restaurant is a delightful culinary gem that beckons travelers and locals alike. This charming eatery offers an inviting atmosphere where you can savor authentic Cambodian dishes alongside a variety of international flavors. Whether you're looking to indulge in local specialties or enjoy a comforting meal after exploring the area, Hao An provides a perfect pit stop on your journey between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
I wanted to eat a yellow noodle with duck meat, but we were too late.(We were there at around 10am) We were overwhelmed by so many menus on the tablet, so we just ordered coffees, bakeries and eggs with minced beef. They all were great!
Danbi J — Google review
Overcrowded and underwhelming during peak season Visited as a tourist during Khmer New Year—it was my first time in Kompong Cham province. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The place was extremely crowded, and the staff couldn’t manage the orders properly. My family waited for a long time, only to be told later that many menu items were already sold out. The prices were quite high compared to the quality and quantity of the food we received. Overall, not a good experience. I wouldn’t recommend visiting during busy holidays or peak seasons.

All dishes we've ordered are quite tasty and their prices are reasonable. Location is quite central and parking not not an issue. If you are happened to be in kampong cham, try this restaurant.
Ken L — Google review
The amount of cars parked outside of the restaurant last night here was an assurance for us that this restaurant must be good so we went ahead and ordered a big round of food items as we were famished after a drive from Phnom Penh. Food was okay I guess for Kompong Chan, but not really something that would warrant me to come back to.
Loven R — Google review
My Khyna, my tuk tuk driver, recommended Hao Ann Restaurant for dinner. While it is primarily a hot pot restaurant with MANY choices, they also offer A BUNCH of prepared dishes each in three sizes—as eating family style is VERY common in Cambodia. My choices for dinner (please keep in mind, I napped through lunch today): Small Fried Tofu (14000 riel—$3.50) Small Beef with Yellow Noodles (12000 riel—$3.00) Soda (? $1.00) Mango Smoothie (? $2.00) TOTAL $10.00-ish The meal was good. The mango smoothie was out of this world. Since I arrived before sunset, you get to see the al fresco dining without lights and with lights. Nice dusk ambiance. Just inside — across from me—staff were chatting and peeling LOTS of garlic.

Historical landmark
Independence Monument, located in Kampong Cham, is a significant landmark that symbolizes Cambodia's national pride. Situated at the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard, this monument was constructed in 1958 to commemorate the country's independence from France in 1953. Its design draws inspiration from the Khmer architecture seen in Angkor Wat. The construction of a similar monument began in December 2021 and is expected to be completed by November 2022.

Great experience there. quiet and good service. Dog friendly with 5$ fee for a dog per night.

I stayed at this hotel recently and overall had a decent experience. However, I was surprised to find that I was personally charged for cleaning the tower, even though the hotel staff confirmed that it could be cleaned and the clients had agreed to pay for any mess caused. While I appreciate that the facilities are well-maintained and the staff are responsive, I believe such charges should not fall on individual staff if the clients have already taken responsibility. I hope the management can review this policy to ensure fair and transparent billing in the future.

Paid $13 I think a few weeks ago for an AC double bed room. Clean, spacious, TV, kettle and coffee. The hotel has a lift/elevator, welcome after several hours cycling from Phnom Penh. We had a western breakfast in the hotel's coffee bar. The staff are very helpful and friendly, and the riverside is only a 5 mins walk away.

room is clean but small which is ok ... bathroom is small too... bed and pillows are hard ... water pressure is low ... sometimes no water until you call the receptionist by going down to the lobby or making call from your mobile phone since there's no landline in the room ... 2.5 stars
Sethyk P — Google review
We booked a superior room on agoda ($80 for two nights). On arrival the receptionist had no idea about our booking and instead of looking it up, asked us to prove our booking. As my phone had no charge, we had to first charge our phone. After a 6 hour drive on our moto, this was not the reception we were hoping for. In the end the receptionist gave a room without checking our booking. We were given a standard "deluxe" room. Small room, the ceiling above the shower was leaking, and the TV did not work. They also did not clean the room the entire time we were there. We felt ripped off.
Adolfo P — Google review
What a welcome, booked it at the last minute on the Internet. Certainty not disappointed, Receptionist only two happy to provide local map and give suitable itinaty for bike tour next day. Booked twin room but when we arrived as a couple we were upgraded to a superior twin with patio and outside bath on terrace.

Sights & Landmarks
One of the standout attractions in Kampong Cham is the Kaoh Pan Island Bamboo Bridge, a remarkable structure that spans the Mekong River. This pedestrian footbridge, stretching approximately 1,800 meters, is crafted entirely from bamboo and serves as a vital link to Koh Pen Island during the dry season. Each year, it’s rebuilt after being washed away by seasonal rains, showcasing local craftsmanship and resilience.
It was fun and different experience for sure ! The bamboo bridge is about 1 kilometers away and it is built a cores the entire river it was cool and scary in the same time because the bamboo kind of warm out . I love the kompong Chan proving beside the bridge you can drive around and enjoy the province .

This is a beautiful island for local and foreign visitors alike. I arrived there at lunch time, it a little bit hot. Recommend time to visit from 3 or 4 pm or in the morning but in the morning maybe food stalls not yet open. There are many restaurants on the island, we can eat and enjoy the view a long the river.
Raksmey C — Google review
One of the main tourist attraction place of Kampong Cham. The Bamboo Bridge made each year during dry season when low water level & it gets damage during rainy season. Only 2000 KHR entry ticket. Magnificent Sunset view across the river while walking through this long Bamboo Bridge is an amazing experience. Other-side of the river has nice facility with bamboo huts, foods, nice decorations where you can spend the whole afternoon peacefully while exploring the river itself with swimming & have fun! Worth to visit
Rajib D — Google review
Amazing bridge built annually. The locals collect a small fee for usage, it's a huge amount of work and resources to construct such a thing.
Ian T — Google review
Interesting bit of history. We took the chance to stop at the “Bamboo Bridge” - which was the original bridge that linked the island to the mainland. It is a pedestrian footbridge, about 1,800 metres long and made entirely of bamboo. This was the only way for the Island inhabitants to get to / from the township (other than by boat). Nowadays it has been replaced by a concrete bridge that allows for the bikes etc.
Norm P — Google review
Bridge is still open as of writing this (April 15 2025) they say it will be closed during rainy season. But rebuilt again once dry season is back
Oak N — Google review
A very long (1km) bamboo bridge connecting the mainland to Koh Pen. During rain season it is washed away by the river and is rebuilt after rainy season each year. Amazing sunset and great spot to explore. The sandy island has a number of restaurants with Cambodian style cabanas. It’s worthwhile the trip. Something different.
Gavin T — Google review
Amazing that the bamboo bridge is built and taken down every six months due to seasonal water level changes. Maybe thats why they charge 2.5$ for a car.

Historical landmark
The French Lighthouse, located in Tbong Khmum province just across the bridge from Kampong Cham, offers a stunning panoramic view of the town and the Mekong River. Renovated in recent years, this historical tower features a steep and precarious staircase that leads to the top where visitors can enjoy breathtaking views. Despite its narrow and ladder-like stairs, the lighthouse's charm and picturesque vistas make it a must-visit spot for those seeking an unforgettable experience.
The view from the top of the lighthouse is beautiful. You have to climb 4 flights of ladder-like stairs to get there. (The pictures attached was taken during a big flood so all the streets were covered with water in the village.)

I went there on November 7th 2022. It's a small historical French tower in Tbong Khmum province, just across the bridge from Kampong Cham. The view from the top is amazing. You could see the whole town of Kampong Cham and the river.
NIN K — Google review
The stairs are very steep but the view is definitely worth it definitely worth checking out even if you don’t make it all the way up the stairs.
Charlotte P — Google review
Free to climb up but super sketchy haha
Drew — Google review
If this is supposed to be a tourist attraction it is in poor condition. Ok that it is free but hey. Soo dirry. It is all open, so lots of birds and pigeons living there. Birds poo everywhere. I admit I was not brave enough to go on top since the steps are very high and steep. And i have vertigo. The building is completely empty.
Loris F — Google review
The best view ob Kampong Cham ! But you need to be brave to get at the top. The stair are very steep !

Monday 15 June: French Watch Tower I primarily walked across the Kizuna Bridge to see the French Watch Tower. According to Wander Lush: “Built in the 1920s by Kampong Cham’s colonial rulers, the watchtower served as a protection mechanism for the profitable rubber plantations around town. If bandits were approaching on the Mekong, a fire would be lit in the tower to warn the Governor, who had a direct line of sight to the tower from his house. The tower’s external plasterwork and vertiginous internal staircase (it’s more like a set of ladders) was restored in 2005.” Nope... I didn’t climb the ladders.....
Jessica O — Google review
It's an old tower but still charming. If you are not afraid from the stairs you can enjoy a great view from the top. Just be careful.

If you're looking for a delightful culinary experience in Kampong Cham, look no further than Dary's Lazy Mekong Daze. This charming restaurant is not only known for its warm and welcoming atmosphere but also offers a diverse menu featuring both traditional Khmer dishes and Western favorites. During my stay, I was fortunate enough to witness an inspiring ceremony where 200 veterans received medals for their loyalty to the motherland, adding a unique cultural touch to my visit.
Dary's Lazy Mekong Daze Restaurant is the place to go in Kampong Cham, very friendly owner good Khmer food and western food stayed in Kampong Cham for 2 days we ate there three times had 3 pizzas the best so far in Cambodia had Chicken Amok and Fish&Chips and Coconut Fried Rice we were not disappointed at all enjoyed every bit!! good location right by the Mekong River should be NUMBER ONE ON TRIPADVISOR much better than Smile Restaurant!! would definitely come back when i go travelling again. Keep up the good work :D

Avocado, olives, Baguette available in this place The lady speaks good English and is able to customise your order. Iam told she runs this place like no other in kampong Cham.

Best vego curry I’ve had on this trip so far. 6 months. It was more than a hungry cyclist needed and was full of a good selection of vegetables and not just all sauce. Great menu with lots of choice from Asian to Western. Lovely friendly staff. Although not advertised, there is also a lovely big room there you can rent. Shared bathroom with family. I had 2 really nice nights there. Totally recommend it, restaurant and accomodation.

I spent 4 years in New York, and that's got to be one of the toughest pizza towns in the world. I have to say, though, the Ali Special ranks as one of the best pies I have ever eaten, anywhere. No, it's not orthodox - white sauce instead of red, but bear with me. It's topped off with a generous helping of garlic and bacon. Might wreck your breath, but it'll make your day. Absolutely worth a visit.
Brendan S — Google review
In my humble opinion, Dary makes the best pizza in Cambodia. I've been eating at Lazy Mekong Daze since 2009, I've never been disappointed in a meal there. Highly recommended.

A regular stop-off in Kompong Cham; Lazy Mekong Daze is well located with a view to the Kizuna Bridge and the Mighty Mekong River. Decent western and Khmer food is served and the staff are friendly and fun once you get to know them! The french owner has lived in Cambodia for around 12 years and is a good source of local knowledge. They also rent modern, well maintained Moto’s if you want to explore on your own, and can recommend and organise reliable Tuktuk drivers. A worthwhile stop, but remember to SLOW DOWN! You’re in Kampong Cham!

Krong Kampong Cham

Krong Kampong Cham, located in southeastern Cambodia along the Mekong River, is a city renowned for its well-preserved French colonial architecture. Visitors can explore the charming streets lined with classic buildings from the French period. Just outside the city, there are several attractions to discover, such as Koh Pen Island accessible via a bamboo bridge and Wat Nokor Bachey featuring a modern pagoda built on an ancient Angkorian temple site.

Restaurant
Mekong Crossing Guesthouse and Restaurants is a casual pub-style eatery located by the waterfront, offering mainly Western dishes like burgers and pasta. The grilled fish with lime and chips comes highly recommended. While the rooms on the 2nd floor lack AC, the friendly staff makes for a pleasant stay. The restaurant offers $1 draft beers and a variety of drinks including strawberry smoothies and ice coffees.
All the staff is amazing and kind, specially the young NouN. Double room with fan, very confortable, clean, 8$ (was a bit warm at beginning but after OK). Good WiFi. Food is good, price in the average. Bikecycle for rent (1,5$) and motorbike (5$)... I try to negotiate every price but they never care. :-(
Fredo — Google review
Nice place with a very friendly staff. A bit of a backpacker/foreigner hub but the food is good and drinks are cheap so you can't blame them. We stayed 2 nights and had a pleasant stay. Nothing fancy for perfect for a night's rest. If you can check out the "temple on the hill" it is about 20km outside but the drive is nice and its view from up top make it worth it entirely.
Martin M — Google review
Confortable room and excellent coffee otherwise nothing positive. The owner is warm and polite til you pay. After that, they don’t care about you. Bad food, no good quality (they use powder for fruit shakes) and expensive prices. They gonna keep your passport if you want to rent a bike/motorbike. Please don’t allow them to do that and keep your documents with you!!
Diana B — Google review
I would say it is one of the finest backpackers restaurants around. Personally, we didn't have the best experience there. They food took a long time to be served, even though it wasn't busy, one of us found an elastic rubber band in her food. Generally speaking, affordable prices with equivalent quality.
Diego T — Google review
Great place to eat, have been coming here every morning. Staff are very friendly and the food is so good. Outdoor seating has nice views overlooking the river and and is closely surrounding a number of interesting shops.
Fynn S — Google review
Room was clean with comfy bed. Hot shower and free bottle of water. Good value for 7$. Staff was incredible rude, all of them. The worst staff what I ever met in Cambodia. WiFi didn't work well.
Petr S — Google review
US$1 draft beers, the spicy noodles with pork salad, the strawberry smoothie and ice coffees were good. The spring rolls with pork and the french fries were mediocre. The restaurant is on a corner across the street from the river, so a nice breeze blows through, keeping it pretty comfortable on a hot day.
Shane — Google review
Nice place with good food and friendly staff. Our room was situated on the 2nd floor without an AC which we missed to book additionally for 5$. Definitely too hot and not recommandable. They booked us a „VIP“-minivan shuttle to pnohm penh for 5$ per person. Sadly there was nothing „VIP“ about that minivan. The driver stopped every 10 minutes to pick up someone. The van was not safe to ride, our luggage was treated horribly and the driver kept on spitting in the van and throwing his trash out the windows. The worst experience we had so far. Even if it is not the hotels responsibility, I would have liked some more clarification in regards of the service provided. Also they picked us up 45 min late. Leaving kampong Cham at 10:45, we took astonishing 3 1/2 hours to reach Phnom Penh.... this is just for guests that came after us and Plan to take the bus to PP, never use the minivan, you will regret it!

When exploring Kampong Cham city, you have the option to stroll or cycle around town. For those wishing to venture beyond the city limits, renting a motorbike or hopping on a motodop or tuk-tuk is an excellent choice, with fares starting at just $2 depending on your destination. Rental shops, hotels, and guesthouses offer bicycles and motorbikes for convenience. The Pizza Company stands out as a reliable chain that consistently delivers quality food and service across its locations.
pretty crazy to find an american deep dish pepperoni pizza this good in a middle of nowhere city with few foreign tourists. exactly the same as you’d get at any other pizza company location
Daniel B — Google review
As a chain, the Pizza Company has managed to maintain its consistency and standards anywhere it is, as proven by our experience here. Staff were also trained well and even the security guard manning the parking area was very efficient and helpful. Our only complaint was the lack of take out cups for drinks, meaning we can have our food to go, but not our drinks. Only thing available to bring with you are warm soda cans. Considering that they also do plenty of deliveries, this is weird.
Loven R — Google review
Just like another typical Pizza company. But the service is a bit slow since there only one chef and two waitresses.
AMRIN — Google review
Bad af! I order extras cheesy crust and I got extreme crust instead without any refund or offer to get something more instead. Do not go there if you talked abt service
Yen V — Google review
Food is kind of bland but Lovely atmosphere and great service. Would recommend getting the pizza with small sausages in the crust for at least one of your future orders. Mainly cause it's fun. Loved the fact the the building also has aircon. So good after a long day.

For a fascinating glimpse into rural life in Kampong Cham, make a trip to Cheung Kok village on the city's outskirts. This village offers guided tours organized by an NGO, providing visitors with insights into local agricultural practices like rice harvesting. Additionally, there is a shop where one can purchase handmade crafts created by the locals.
We stayed one night in the Cheung Kok village. The tour from Ms. Aline was very informative and her English class was fun to attend. It’s beautiful to see what she does and has done for her community. Everyone was really welcoming. Make sure to stop by the lovely shop with handicrafts from the village before leaving!

Lovely people, lovely kids. Peaceful atmosphere. We didn’t find someone who was supposed to explain us around but that’s ok, it’s good to have a walk around by yourself. We bought some stuff from their market for support the local community. Do it, it’s cheap! :)

Authentic experience of village life in Cambodian countryside. The children are welcoming ambassadors. The culture of the country is one of hospitality. Well worth the drive.
Larry R — Google review
The village people were very friendly. It was fun walking around the village with the kids holding your hands and wanting to interact.
Jay B — Google review
Such a fun and different experience. We met the locals and learned from each other, learned how they live and produce foods and goods. And we stayed at a local's house and ate traditional Cambodian food. Whoever likes being a little away from crazy city life should definitely pay this village a visit. Such great and kind people. :))
Sophie B — Google review
Nice little village to walk around, there were many chickens, dogs and cows.
Chris — Google review
It's a great place to visit if you're interested in rural life in Cambodia. Aline is such a lovely person, it's very impressive how she is a tour guide, teaches all the kids in the village and helps to promote sustainable development. She introduced the AMICA program to us and showed us around the village, where we could see how the people weave scarfs, collect the palm juice from which they produce palm sugar and grow all kinds of vegetables and fruit. At the end of the tour there's a little store where you can buy handicrafts made by the villagers. The tour is free, I'd recommend supporting the community by either buying some products or donating some dollars. I'd recommend contacting Aline in advance to make sure she has time to show you around. (We called in the morning and visited the village the same day in the afternoon) We were a little confused about were we should go to, I think the easiest is to wait at the AMICA school building, which is on the right side of the road, if you follow the turquoise sign at the entrance of the village.
