It's a chain so there are a few others in various parts of London, but by this one in Shoreditch knocks the others out of the park. Entrance is free, which is fantastic given the incredible amount of neon lights and other decorative item that make this its own museum. Half the tables were empty, they all had dirty glasses on them, the lady behind the bar, who looked like she might be the owner, was looking at her phone. The fine weather meant that we could sit outside which was useful as internally the café is pretty compact. Although it does offer toilets which you could probably use even if you're not making a purchase. On arrival there's a decent menu written on the wall which covers everything from sandwiches and baguettes to a full English breakfast. There are also a selection of homemade cakes available which do look rather tempting. Still we decided to try a range of sandwiches and an omelette. Because we were sitting outside we were unfortunately downgraded to wooden cutlery (maybe the youths that we saw performing community service nearby are prone to stealing them otherwise?). Anyway there we sat with our food buzzer and cups of tea waiting for our lunch. In fact we waited long enough to wonder if our buzzer was broken! Still our order did arrive in the fullness of time and really we could live with the delay because the food was clearly freshly made from scratch and that makes all of the difference. The sandwiches themselves were notably good in using quality ingredients and arriving with both salad and some crisps. So they were more than acceptable while my omelette was piping hot and pleasingly cheesy. So The Holly Trail Café hit the mark and I doubt that you'll be disappointed if you stop by.

The staff welcomed us and took us to our table and throughout our visit were polite and attentive. The food was unfortunately a huge let down. The food was exceptional, the service was outstanding, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. But one big disappointment was the check, they charged us for an extra meal. though it was rectified however, the service charge was not adjusted with the bill. The service charge is quite high, if I knew I was paying that amount I would have demanded the service to that level. Please keep an eye out on the bill and the service charge !!!

We saw several staff go back and forth, serve other customers and not once did anyone look at our empty table and question if something was wrong. I then started to think I just needed to flag someone down or go up to the bar again. It was only after another table of 2 moved nearer to us and I asked them how to get drinks. One of them said “we’ve been waiting for a bottle for 40 minutes.” That just spoke volumes of what we were going to expect if we stayed longer. So we left. I had high expectations for this place. I know costs everywhere are rising, though my subscription started out at £8.00 including shipping and had risen to £10.50 when I cancelled, roughly 30%! It’s so peaceful to sit on the tables outside. The food is delicious but I have to be honest and say some of it is expensive for what you get (bacon bap for example was heavy on the bread and not much bacon). Customer service is perfect - the ladies were so welcoming. I had a cappuccino for my caffeine fix. The regular selection of breakfast muffins, coffees and cakes were on the menu. The flat white me and the wife ordered was on point; smooth and flavoursome. The breakfast muffins were ok, could’ve done with some ketchup or mayo on the side. I was very disappointed with the lemon cake, it was stale, dry and falling apart. Service wasn’t exactly on point either, the guy forgot I ordered a slice of cake, I had to walk back and ask for it. Not like my Starbucks, Costa or local délice café experience, where they’ve always been on point. This was my first visit, I was not impressed. If I’m paying the same price, if not more, than what I would at Starbucks or Costa, I’d expect the same level of service and quality.
