We've lived in Havering for over a decade before we discovered this hidden gem and I honestly regret all the wasted years buying coffee and pastries from the big chain coffee shops where I'm served by teenagers who are dead behind the eyes. But don't let me confuse you. This isn't a coffee shop, it is a patisserie and boulangerie but I would go out of my way to go here just for a coffee alone. My husband and I first came here for breakfast to try it out after a recommendation from a friend, and upon entering we were dazzled by the sheer vastness and quality of their offering. Multiple types of breads, cakes and pastries. All freshly-baked and golden rather than those limp, pale specimens you see elsewhere. Every time we went in we felt compelled to try something new and nothing disappoints. That being said, whatever we buy we will also typically purchase a few mille-feuille to go. Honestly this place is amazing in that every item is of exceptional quality, but also so incredible reasonably-priced. The decor is quaint with cute and interesting artwork dotted around and it feels warm and homely. The owner is a real character, greeting regulars and new customers with the same warm, open, friendly demeanour as if you were a guest at her home. We now take the walk most Saturdays from our home in Harold Wood to Hornchurch so we can get enough steps in to justify treating ourselves to a delicious breakfast (and the walk back for the mille-feuille). If you haven't checked it out before, I implore you to do so. For quality AND price, you won't do better locally, you''ll be supporting a local, independent business AND you can avoid the dead-eyed teens at the local chains. ;)

My daughter doesn't like tea (I'm working on it), so she had a hot chocolate, which was very nice, and I was pleased to get three fill cups of tea from my pot. The interior of the premises was nicely presented and clean, including the toilet, which is accessible. Level access throughout and good layout of tables and chairs, making it a good place to visit for wheelchair users. Staff were friendly and polite. We went on a Sunday and it wasn't too busy, plus you get free parking in the Brewery on Sundays (and there is lots of parking available if you go up into the multi-storey section, upper levels). I did initially think the cost of the afternoon was expensive, but having looked at the cost of afternoon tea at other places, I'd say the Patesserie Valerie Afternoon is actually very good value and definitely something I would do again. I rang up and booked in for the afternoon tea, which I had to pay a £10 deposit for, which gets taken off the bill. I told them that my guest doesn’t eat fish, so could they have chicken instead of salmon, but I would still have the salmon sandwiches and they said that was fine. When we turned up, they first sat us at the wrong table and we had to move. Then when they bought out the afternoon tea, they had bought out the following sandwiches: egg & cress, chicken & Mayo, ham & cucumber. They had given us both chicken sandwiches, when I had told them I wanted salmon when I booked and the chicken was for my guest; so I had to ask for the salmon ones for myself, which they bought over a few minutes later. They got my tea order wrong, I ordered chai tea and they gave me a green tea, which you can see in the picture. I had to go up to the counter and ask for the correct tea, which they bought out a few minutes after but they forgot to bring me milk, so I had to ask for that aswell. Sandwiches were nice and soft. Scones were warm but bone dry. Cakes were also dry/stale; they also only gave 1 of each cake, so we had to cut each one in half ourselves. I wouldn’t come back here again for afternoon tea - the only good thing was the sandwiches. The service was too disorganised. Giving them 2 stars because the decor is very pretty & cosy, and the afternoon tea for 2 was cheap (£30 in total for 2 people).

There weren’t as many dairy-free options to choose from so I settled for the bbq pork, salad and tenderstem broccoli. They let me swap the mash for chips, which were beautifully crunchy, golden and fluffy in the middle. We booked the four poster suite for 4 nights and sadly the hotel does not live up to the looks. Truly disappointing. You can look at my other reviews - I do not go around complaining. However... The bar smelt of vomit and cleaning fluid. The people themselves are lovely, but the hotel is very tired, and there is no oversight on cleaning. A few examples - there was a large stain on the carpet in the room, which was there for 3DAYS until I cleaned it myself. The bedside tables (with some drawers which did not open) were so sticky on top I had to pull the telephone out of the goo to make a call. All the phone buttons were sticky too. The headboard was covered in dust at the top as were all the lamps in the rooms. The windows were dirty, and the curtains had been pulled hard at some point and not put back. The table with tea and coffee was also stained and sticky. The bathroom light on the ceiling had some dead insects in it, and the lights above the sink one had a missing cover and didnt work. A group of us met up and they were really accommodating with trying to get us all as close as possible. Considering the hotel is closing down soon everything seemed to be running smoothly. The lift wasn't working so that tested out our muscles shifting cases for the members who had travelled from the USA/Canada! One of our party had mobility issues so stepping into a bath for a shower was a huge issue. There were 2 double rooms with walk in showers and luckily one was free so we could swap our room so the other person could just come to use our shower. It wasn't needed but the red emergency pull cords in the room weren't long enough. If you fell on the floor there is no way you could reach them. Also the pool area, gym and spa were all down steps. There was no slope. It wasn't a huge issue for us but if you had mobility issues it would have been an issue. I went into the gym and the running machine wasn't working but there was other stuff to use. The pool was lovely. I was in there at 8am one morning when it was drizzling and it was nice and warm. The steps to get out are at the deep end, 7ft so for people who don't like going out their depth they need to jump out the shallow end. Or get helped out. The nature reserve was nice, and peaceful. The car park was huge and no problem parking. The hotel was clean and the rooms were tidy and smelt fresh. The staff were great. We had a group of us eating and all 22x three course meals came out without an issue. I would definitely return for another visit. It's a shame it is closing as it is a lovely hotel. Individual and not part of a chain.

The service was exceptional, constantly smiling and being personable, making sure we were all okay throughout the evening. The atmosphere is great. Lady that served me was welcoming and very attentive without being over the top. If you're looking for a cheap breakfast then I suppose this is the place for you. It's was a lovely setting with a delicious carefully prepared Afternoon Tea. The service was second to none and the staff really took the time to make sure we were looked after and the coffee and tea was also plentiful. We took our little dog too who was welcomed. Just not the same place to meet up as is less seating than before replaced with bar stools which nobody wants to sit at i noticed. The designer obviously doesn't get the demographic of Romford, old people and a lot of parents! Guess Starbucks really don't want people to sit comfortably in their stores and using pandemic as an excuse to move everything to cheap IKEA chairs. Guess we will stick to Costa going forward as that still allows groups to sit together in a comfortable setting or Poppins down the road, which both have cheaper coffee anyhow.

When we arrived a staff member (looks like the owner) was sitting front of the coffee shop. When come in went straight in the kitchen without washing hand. The place is clean all tables, chairs, plates and cutlery but when we arrived at 9am on Sunday and they took our order they continued the cleaning.(walls, menus etc. Should be done before opening) they just finished the cleaning and they went in the kitchen to finish the food serving. Food is mixed quality some ingredients are good but some of them taste very poor but as much as possible looks fresh. Later definitely will give them another chance and eat here. Staff have always been consistently friendly. The place needs a good refurb which is a pity as the coffee tastes wonderful. Prices are high or reasonable depending on what you buy. Roll for example with bacon and sausages was reasonable with a cappacino. But full breakfast seemed expensive compared to simlar places in collier row. I would return for takeaway next time. They make a wonderful cold coffee which is budget friendly but no ice. We are repeat customers for take away breakfast.

Half hour wait while cafe was quite empty. And safe to say the cook can not cook an omelette at all. Was cold and food was missing. If you can't cook an omelette then please don't cook at all. Totally disappointing and won't bother going back. Waste of time and money. Loads of other better cafes to go to.
