Also saw some folks park out on the 9 on the south east side of the road and they hiked in. Definitely one of my favorite redwood parks in California. Definitely bring money for the trains, there's two and I recommend both. The 4x4 train is steam and super cool the other takes you to the Santa Cruz boardwalk. I figure why spend $28 for 2 hours for parking and 45 minutes waiting for a spot in and leaving when you can park at Henry Cowell for $10 pay 45 for the train get dropped off and take a later return avoiding both the traffic and the really expensive parking. Then, our battery died despite the boat rental telling us it would last 2.5 hours. We didn’t even use the battery the whole hour either. At that point we tried to row back. The current picked up and we started to panic a little. We were losing energy and had no service, no flag, no radio. I tried texting friends to call the rental place for help. We paddled for an hour trying to get back and making little progress. Long beyond the time we intended to be out there so we were dehydrated and ended up with gnarly sunburns because we couldn’t reapply without the boat drifting back. On our way back there were other boats that needed help too, so this was not just an us thing. Did a 9-10 mile loop taking Fall Creek up a long gradual climb along the creek. You barely notice how much elevation youve gained because its gradual and tons of waterscape scenery. Then took Big Ben which is a well maintained trail but certainly a good climb! After seeing the Big Ben Tree, cut down Lost Empire trail back to eventually connect back up to Fall River and back to the parking lot. Lost Empire is a really beautiful trail sans all the waterscapes. Nice change of scenery. Went on a fall morning starting off in the 40s and lots of mist ans drizzle. Got to the low 50s. Wore running shorts and a sweater. Totally fine. Highly recommend this loop. Its is so picturesque. Access to this side is free and there's free parking there too. Carried a 3 liter water bladder and barely use half. Can totally get water from the Fall Creek for the entire first 4 to 5 miles up. I pulled out my water purifier and the creek water was just as good as Evian. I could have carried so much less water knowing the creek was there.
