Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea is a non-profit aquarium situated on Sidney's waterfront that showcases a diverse range of over 160 marine species. The exhibits also feature artifacts related to marine mammals and an art collection showcasing Coast Salish culture. Visitors can participate in educational programs like workshops, lectures, and kids' activities designed to increase awareness about Salish Sea's ecosystem, including keystone species such as orca whales and Pacific salmon.
It was our family’s first visit here and we had a lovely time. The submarine entrance was a nice added touch for the kids. We spent our time looking at everything, enjoying the touch pool and learning from the educators about the Salish Sea. We felt very welcomed, especially with the humour and kindness from the education staff. It really shows how much fun they are, too. The octopus had finished lunch when we arrived so she was very active, moving from one side to the other. Compared to other aquariums we’ve been to, she’s a standout! We came on a weekday, which is typically less busy, and it gave us the chance to take our time to really look at everything. The wolf eel even made an appearance, which an educator pointed out and it gave our visit a more interactive approach that we appreciated. Jamie, one of the educators at the centre was stellar. He was warm, welcoming and patient with my kids’ questions and comments. At one point during our visit, he walked through the centre to invite guests to a pollinator trivia activity. My kids really enjoyed learning from him. Thank you Jamie! Yes, it is a smaller centre, features a more locally focused cast of marine life, yet it offers a much more chill and interactive experience that our family really enjoyed.

Educational and fun. The staff are eager to help you learn more about the Salish Sea. The touch tank is really neat! The "submarine" entrance is super cute. You walk all the way through and then turn around and come back the way you came. Nice little giftshop.
Sarah G — Google review
Great place for children and adults alike. Very interesting and educational. Especially at feeding time. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. The gift store supports local artists and the aquarium is non profit so its a great local business to support. Highly recommend visiting!
Mark S — Google review
The Salish sea aquarium at Sidney is awesome. The exhibits are designed thoughtfully and are engaging to look at, for both young and old visitors. The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable. There are numerous interactive exhibits and activities. The new pollinators exhibition is very interesting and has some beautiful photography. You will definitely learn something new after visiting the Salish sea aquarium.
Blake C — Google review
This place was fun for my little girl… what I didn’t like or agree with was the 2 all gender bathrooms and the one men’s bathroom … where’s the women’s washroom ??!! Why 2 all gender and 1 male ? Why not 1 of each !? Needless to say I waited to pee and I changed my little GIRL in the car .
Lyndsay H — Google review
I had a spectacular experience learning about the rich maritime life beneath the Salish Sea here. The museum is small yet there is a lot to see. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and my tour was quirky and fun. I especially liked the octopus, whom I was told was really in a mood to show off. The touch pool was amazing as well. All in all, I had a sensational tour and this museum is a great place to visit while in Sidney.
Kevin L — Google review
Visiting the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea was truly one of the highlights of our trip. The staff in the front was informative. Entrance is designed to make you feel like you are descending to the bottom of the sea. It was so fun. The jellyfish and octopus were very active and fun to watch. It seems like this is a place that is designed for children, but we (adults) loved it too!
K G — Google review
This small yet charming aquarium is a must-see on vancouver island, and it was a delightful experience! The entrance elevator is very cool, and also makes it all very accessible. Despite its modest size, the variety of marine life was impressive, especially the mesmerizing jellyfish and the playful octopus. The touch pool was a highlight, allowing for a hands-on encounter with some fascinating sea creatures. The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, always eager to share interesting facts about the exhibits. The gift shop was a cool addition, offering unique souvenirs that are perfect for marine life enthusiasts. The only downside was that it felt a tad overpriced for the size of the aquarium, and for most of their merchandise but the experience and the joy it brought made it worth it. Overall, a lovely visit that I highly recommend!

The Sidney Museum and Archives in Sidney, British Columbia, is a treasure trove of history and culture. With over 8,000 artifacts, it offers a glimpse into the early lives of pioneers in the region through photographs and displays. From the stories of settlers to connections with past businesses, the museum provides insight into turn-of-the-century domestic life. In addition to permanent exhibits on local First Nations, industry, transportation, agriculture, and social history, there are changing showcases throughout the year.
This was my third year in a row to visit the museum and also see the Lego exhibit. I’ve enjoyed it every time and have learned new things about both Sidney and Lego on each visit. I especially enjoyed the model of the Hawaii Mars after having seen the video of it landing in Pat Bay! Great work everyone!!
Sheila K — Google review
Went for the annual Lego exhibition, definitely a fun time. They have something for everyone and the plaques were informative too. The scavenger hunt while going through the museum was a nice touch and kept us engaged throughout!
Daniel — Google review
A hidden gem for new comers and visitors. One of the best places to learn more about the local history. Look forward to their LEGO exhibit in December 💖
MY Y — Google review
I visited this museum in middle of January 2025 when it had LEGO exhibition. In short, it was smaller than I thought but I was glad I stopped by during my visit to Sydney. It looked like they rotate around their exhibits from time to time. So make sure to check their website before visiting. No admission fee was required for this particular one but they do ask for donations when you enter it in (and they take cards too).
Jong W — Google review
Fun escape from the rain for the three of us - adults!! There were really engaged staff with a fun scavenger hunt to find tiny Lego creations.
Ashley W — Google review
We visited for the Lego exhibit and it was so much bigger and more detailed than I expected. Lots of interesting displays to enjoy, whether you're into Lego or not. The docent who greeted us was also very friendly and gave us an overview of the museum
Daisies234 — Google review
They boast about their artifacts but there didn't seem to be that many there really. Enjoyed seeing the old map on the wall with the countries from early 1900s on it and also the quilt made by the school children of the early settler land holdings on sandwich Peninsula. Don't know why so much time or space was devoted to the capsizing of that one boat. Thought it was thoughtful to include the LGBTQ2+ section and also about the leper colony.

Nice museum. We were on our way to the ferry and had some spare time. So we visited this place and it was interesting. It took less than an hour for the visit. The entry is by donation.

Food & Drink
Victoria Distillers, located in Sidney, BC, has been crafting top-quality handmade spirits for a decade. In 2016, the distillery moved to a unique waterfront location to expand its operations and engage the local community and visitors in the art of creating artisanal spirits. One of their most renowned products is the award-winning Empress 1908 gin, known for its vibrant indigo color derived from butterfly pea flowers and its exceptional flavor profile.
We enjoyed trying product not available at home. Great location for a walk along the water as well.
Lisa A — Google review
We were lucky enough to be passing by around opening time and we went in and did a tour of the operation. Lovely little location with a great view and an ability to test out the latest distillations.
Graham T — Google review
Went here on a Friday afternoon with a group of 4 and had a $7.00/person tour which takes place every hour. It was interesting, informative and fun. Lasted about 30 minutes. Dave and Jason were very friendly and engaging. The tour includes a tasting at the end of 5 items. The Empress gin is beautiful and delicious. We definitely took a bottle home. The chocolate liquer was amazing. We also enjoyed some gin and tonics. We got some great information on gin and had a great time.
Elsy C — Google review
Great service and tasting. Worth a visit to try new blends of their gins. The bad thing is you might just end up a new bottle for your gin collection. 😉
Sylvain B — Google review
Wow! What a little gem this place is! We came by with some friends, grabbed a gin & tonic and took the factory tour. Our guides were knowledgeable and super friendly! I loved learning about the gin making process. The distillery section is amazing and absolutely spotless clean. These guys obviously take a lot of pride in what they do and it shows in their final products. The tour ended with a 5 gin tasting. All of them were great! We ended up buying a few bottles of the Empress gin which is both excellent in flavour and beautiful in colour! Be sure to drop by for a visit!
Anthony W — Google review
Went on the tour of this place. It's a nice clean place and a new building built a few years ago right on the water front in downtown sidney. The tour took about a half hour and the tasting took about a half hour aswell. We all had a cocktail as we talked around on the tour. The guy doing the tour was very knowledgeable and spent the time to take question from anyone that had any question.

Great decor, fun gins and other liquors. Friendly staff and a good time on the tour. Highly recommend if you’re in the area.

Wonderful playground for children of all ages. Lots of variety and structures, even some musical "instruments ".

Excellent green space to sit and hear the ocean, feel the breeze, enjoy the beams on a sunny day. Beautiful view of Mount Baker and the Cascades on a clear day. Clean and maintain washrooms, mini art gallery, picnic tables, seating and access to gravelly beach to comb and wade...water is very cold! Nice walk north along waterfront past disused Anacortes Ferry Terminal with connection to a "hidden gem" - the Sidney Waterfront Walkway a bit further along; the Walkway will take you to the #SidneyPier and #BeaconPark. #TulistaPark has a real full-size sand volleyball court, a children's play area, skate park, nearby boat launch, and plenty of parking. Take the #72 from downtown Victoria, will drop you off right at the park . Enjoy! Great spot for #planespotting as on the flightpath of #YYJ #Victoria_International_Airport.

Wonderful playpark located in Sidney, BC. Be sure to dress appropriately though as it is located right beside the ocean.
Raymond W — Google review
Gated playground very safe for all children...lots of boats to watch and a plane flies over this park often and when I flew home I could see this playground clearly. Lots of seating and picnic tables and easy walking for strollers and wheelchair...also a beautiful boardwalk along the water and a beach volleyball net with sand beside gated park....lots of playground equipment for all ages.
Laurie L — Google review
Best part about this park, are the airplanes flying overhead! This is a busy, 100% fenced, multi-ages park. It features multiple play structures, swings & benches. There is a park, walking distance, if this one is too crowded. The bathrooms are on the outside of the connected art gallery.
Melody N — Google review
Awesome park by the ocean with 3 playground structures for toddlers to older kids. They also have a few picnic tables beside the playground and a covered sitting area which are great for parents to rest while the kids burn off some energies. Bonus: it's 10 mins away from Swartz Bay terminal so it's a nice stopover before heading to the ferry terminal.

Beacon Park is a picturesque park where one can spend an entire day leisurely strolling on the boardwalk, admiring various works of art and metalwork sculptures along the way towards the pier. The park offers chairs scattered around and a path by the water with wildlife in proximity. It provides a serene view of boats moving through clean ocean waters.
The waterfront is an absolutely unmissable part of Sidney. The view here is phenomenal, especially under the backdrop of Gulf Islands and Mount Baker. The seaside pathway is a great place for a relaxing stroll. Lots of birds here as well, watch out for bird poop.
Kevin L — Google review
If you are already at Sydney, this is a nice stop and look around place. When the weather is nice, clear sky and sunny, you can see Mt. Baker (I think? based on the map) across the sea. Even if you can't see it, the walkway is still very nice. It takes between 30 mins and 1 hour to walk for a round trip if you start from the Beacon Park. I visited here in Janaury and I noticed there were people gathered around at a random Viewpoint and realized they were looking at a seal (sleeping / relaxing) with her nose sticking out of the water. I am not sure if I was just lucky to see one but there it was!

Beautiful park, there are chairs scattered around and a path by the water and rocks. There is wildlife that comes over and the view to watch boats moving through the water is serene. This spot is a moment of tranquility and it’s at the end of the Main Street that have multiple shops and restaurants and bakeries. Parking is difficult but we were able to locate a pay parking lot.

What a beautiful location and view. Stayed for our second time this week and loved it. Easy to find, had no problem getting into our pull thru spot with full hookups. Office staff were just super friendly and helpful. The store had super cute items. Walk to a restaurant just down the road. We also took the Discovery Trail just up the road on our scooters. Now I know why it is so hard to get a reservation...it is a gem!

Get here before the developers do, and enjoy what remains of a bygone era. Self contained cabins literally across the road from the water, in one of the most sheltered and beautiful bays on the peninsula. Spacious cabins, meticulously cleaned and fully equipped, pet-friendly options, and a stones throw from the marina and great Dockside restaurant, you will no doubt want to visit again and again as we have done for three years Ina row.

This was a typical RV parking lot campground with easy access to 101, water access, and some really neat “forest overflow” camping, plus tent camping on a nice grassy area. Very busy, clean, offers coin-operated shower area, “community gathering area,” some swings for kids, plus dump station. We’d recommend checking them out.

We stayed in the rv park, it's ok, great view of the water, sites are a little rough and could use a little upgrading, but have been here before and it's a decent park, close to downtown Sequim.

Sweet quaint cozy cabins close to the John Wayne Marina. Spectacular views and bunnies that visit, which was sweet, reminiscent of my childhood. I would recommend. Thank you

This RV park is just that. Not sure how they call it a resort. No pool but some games and activities. Two bathroom stalls(seems like to few for the amount of people they cram in) and showers are paid by quarters. Odd after you've paid to stay.

Sidney Spit Campground in Gulf Islands National Park Reserve is a special spot that offers a unique camping experience accessible by passenger ferry from Sidney Vancouver Island. The secluded island features lovely sandy beaches, abundant wildlife, and friendly Parks staff who maintain clean outhouses. Visitors should remember to bring their own water and pack out all trash since there are no facilities for these on the island. Additionally, it's important to book the ferry in advance for both arrival and departure as there are limited trips each day.
This is one of our favourite stops when travelling through the GulfIslands. This is a beautiful beach, it is never crowded and is very kid friendly. We always come in by boat, but there is also a ferry available. Parks people are super friendly and helpful and keep the outhouses quite nice and clean. You do need to pack in and pack out all of your trash. There is no water available on the island so make sure you bring lots of refreshments for your picnic if you’re doing a day stop. There are great trails to explore and the beach is beautiful. If you are a boater they have a good dock which is first come first serve.

Beautiful secluded island. Lovely sandy beaches that are not crowded and filled with wildlife. A couple of things to keep in mind: 1-There is no water on the island so you ust bring your water with you. 2-There is no garbage bin on the island so you have to take your trash back with you. 3-Make sure you have booked your ferry for both ways since I have seen people who didn't and had to wait for hours to get on the ferry. 4-Its a kilometer long walk from where the ferry drops you to the campsite. There are wheelbarrows to help you move your stuff. Enjoy this beautiful park and have a great time!

A rustic pristine island with beautiful shoreline, sandy beaches many large timbers, trees, driftwood and small cliffs. I traveled from Sidney BC on the Spit ferry which was reasonably priced. I was only able to spend few hours on the island walking southeast along the east shoreline. It was an easy walk for any person as the hard sand provided as descent footpath. As I carried with me a T mobile (US carrier)phone, I was able to get full 4 bars on this route. I rested on a boulder, phoning ,texting with my rare T Mobile signal 4G. As I finished my 2 hour walk , I never saw another person on the beach. Enjoy!

So close to Sidney, and easily accessible. Sandy beaches on the spit are safe for soft bottom dinghies and bare feet!

The Gulf Islands National Park Reserve is a popular destination for boaters, kayakers, and hikers who are drawn to its stunning natural beauty. This island nature area, teeming with wildlife ranging from seabirds to orcas, offers a picturesque archipelago close to populated areas with convenient services and marinas. While it may not rival the incredible mountains found in Desolation Sound, the park still offers several marine-access camping options and extensive trails for exploration.
Absolutely beautiful, and wonderful dive sites!
Austin V — Google review
Beautiful archipelago close to civilisation and with many town and cities with Marinas and services. However, it cannot compare with Desolation sound which has everything the Gulf islands have but with incredible spectacular mountains...

Several marine-access camping options & vast trails. Some ferry access. I love to explore all 15 destinations. Kayak in! Front Country & back country, reasonable moorage & camping rates. Anchor for free.

My family has been camping at Sidney Spit for a quarter century. This year, our grandson (and his parents) were there. The place is magical and beautiful, and so little changes. The chief complaint would be double edged: since becoming a National Park Reserve, the list of rules just gets longer and more odious. On the other hand, the National Parks people have banned all boats from the lagoon (a terrific important move), and clearly care about keeping the place pristine. Another complaint: the Park reservation website is a nightmare to navigate and god help you if you have to change something. Still, nothing can really diminish the wonder of Sidney Spit.

Beautiful low-tide walks, forest paths, picnicking, camping... just a short ferry boat ride from Sidney. National Parks staff are doing a great job!!

Start at the beginning.. I have been following RED art gallery since their modest exhibition space in Oakbay, to their expanded location and even to their personal studio. Marion and Bobb form a delightful, hospitable duo. They bring an optimistic and lively atmosphere to both art and music! Their vibrant artworks adorn my walls, often hand-delivered. Visiting the gallery is always a pleasure when greeted by Marion, Bobb, and their furry companions. Moreover, they actively support various charitable causes.
Where to begin….. We have followed RED art gallery from their small gallery in Oakbay, to the larger one and to their home studio. Marion and Bobb are a wonderful welcoming team. Always positive and upbeat ( art wise and musically)! We have quite a few colourful art pieces hanging, often delivered personally. It is always a treat to visit the gallery and be welcomed by Marion, Bobb and their furry companions. They are great supporters of a number of charities. Happily colourful, Michael and Donna-Lee

I absolutely love Marion's work. Her talents have no boundaries. My cousins and I are collectors of her work. Marion is invested in her art, mentorship, her community and many social causes. I highly recommend you check out her work.

I have loved me! Art at the Red Art Gallery at all three of their locations, since the first day they opened. I am the proud owner of 2 me! pieces of art! The BIG BOLD colour speaks to me! I am inspired by all of Marion’s art, and look forward to feasting on each piece of her art. Fortunately she posts her art on Instagram so I can peruse her new pieces until I can see them at her studio! Thanks for sharing your extraordinary creativity with the world!!! ♥️

I am a big fan of ME! art! My husband and I had the pleasure of visiting artist Marion Evamy in her home gallery this past weekend in beautiful Sidney. Marion's work is vibrant and whimsical, and her colours convey and inspire absolute joy. We have a growing collection of Marion's works in our Oak Bay and Tofino homes. Husband and business partner Bobb Hamilton is a delight to work with as well. Bobb provides exceptional customer service and personally delivers ME! purchases to our home. And - he remembers our birthdays! I highly recommend Red Art Gallery in Sidney.

Marion’s art is magical! Joy, play, life, colour and love are words that come to mind when I think about her art. Not only is her art stunning, Marion is a pleasure to work with. I have commissioned three works from her and each of them were perfect and special. Marion... you rock!
Barbara K — Google review
The Red Art Gallery in Sidney, BC has added a new dimension of accessible, original art to this vibrant seaside community. Marion Evamy’s (me!) art is world and master class, in my opinion. Constantly evolving her creative muse, Marion’s art is truly alive, infused with new inspirations and expressive of her experiences in the world. Whether it be figures, abstracts or commissioned dog portraits, me! art is colourful, bold, full of depth and texture and adds a sense of ‘life lived out loud’ to any space. My home and life has been positively transformed with every unique piece of Marion’s art. Thank you, Marion and Bobb, for all you create and contribute to the world of original art within your gallery and outside in your community.

This charming gallery showcases the works of talented local artists, and its exhibits are refreshed regularly every Friday. With its convenient proximity to other family-friendly attractions and offering splendid views of the ocean, ArtSea Gallery is a must-visit destination for both tourists and locals alike.
What a wonderful gallery space to visit and exhibit in. As an artist, I hosted an exhibit with six other artists. Lots of walk by traffic and the setting beautiful. The exhibits change weekly which keeps the space fresh, inviting and interesting. For artists, whether you are emerging or seasoned, the space is perfect for accommodating all sizes of artwork.

Stunning paintings. Odette is an amazing artist. The paintings and sculptures are absolutely beautiful. The subject matter of the paintings vary, and they are all remarkable. In addition to the gallery, Odette hosts painting classes, which I have had the privilege of taking. She offers wonderful instruction, and clearly guides you through the process. Her students range from beginners to very experienced artists. It is a wonderful setting, and I always leave being amazed at what I have painted, and with guidance for finishing my painting at home.

Located in Sidney, The Village Gallery & Frame Shop is a must-visit for art enthusiasts and those looking for unique framing options. Visitors praise the friendly and helpful staff, particularly mentioning Brooke's assistance in choosing frames and mattes. With quick turnaround times, this gallery is known for its attention to detail when it comes to showcasing artwork by artists like Morgan Warren.
The Village frame shop did the most gorgeous framing on these 2 pieces by Morgan Warren! It’s important to me that my pieces (especially ones my Morgan, my favourite artist!), must have gorgeous framing & this frame shop did just that! The art glass looks fantastic and everything is in proportion. I also appreciated how Brooke helped me with their choices of frames & mattes. They are super friendly & kind there too, which makes me want to go back! I also appreciate the quick turn around time there!
