History Museums
The Nanaimo Museum is a fascinating place to explore the history and heritage of the city. It features interactive exhibits covering various aspects such as city history, logging, mining, and a sports hall of fame. Visitors can also enjoy a local art gallery and learn about the historical impact of the forest industry. The museum offers hands-on activities for kids, making it an engaging experience for families.
Located in the heart of downtown, this place is 1 min away from the Courtyard by Marriott. The museum is smaller compared to other museums you must have visited, but it definitely packs a punch. It is very well maintained. Staff is friendly too. Entry is by donation only, you are free to pay any amount. Gift shop is also interesting, lots of stuff to choose from. The products I noticed are sold at a dollar or 2 more compared to regular shops. The museum has a lot of historic displays and portrays indigenous culture. There is also a coal mine exhibit, which is pretty much like a real mine. It's great for kids, too. Overall, this museum hosts informative and interactive exhibits that tell the story of Nanaimo's history. Recommended!

An amazing place to learn about Nanaimo, and Vancouver Island. Friendly staff, and there's a gift shop and seating at the lobby area.
Chris Y — Google review
For such a small, unassuming space, the Nanaimo Museum really packs a punch! Each exhibit was presented with detail and care, and had tons of opportunities for hands on participation. The current exhibit on Japanese internment camps in B.C. was very touching and so well designed. The staff are very welcoming and helpful as well.
Tegwyn H — Google review
PEAK museum. I've been to so many museums about the town their in, and it's never particularly notable. But Nanaimo Museum is curated so deliberately, and has a vast array of subjects. It looks very modern and you can tell that the staff really cares. I was surprised at how much they accomplish and how refined it looks. If you need something to do for very cheap definitely go here!!!
Cailyn D — Google review
Very informative and helpful people. Great for kids. While it's a small place lots of history packed in. No charge to get in only donation.
Viki M — Google review
Absolutely amazing. I loved each exhibit. My 10-year-old daughter was blown away by how far we've come as a people. We could see the indigenous peoples' canoes; the early settlers' fun competitions (the bathtub boats), school rooms, stores, and even wedding gowns. We got to see a mine that gave us chills, and so much more. We will definitely be back!
Sonya H — Google review
I was actually at the Serious Coffee. The food was good but I finished my sandwich before I got my soup. They prioritized new coffee orders before getting my soup ready. I really took my time with the sandwich. It was an extraordinarily long time for the soup. Ridiculous actually
Barb S — Google review
Interesting museum, educational and great to know more about Nanaimo. We enjoyed looking at the paintings of different artists during that particular weekend, with one of them being quite talented. Too bad about the crime and some people suffering the effects of drugs around downtown.

Neck Point Park is a 14-hectare oceanfront park in Nanaimo, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Strait of Georgia and nearby islands. The park features a vast hiking trail system with some of the best ocean views in the area. Nearby attractions include Pipers Lagoon, known for its spectacular viewpoints and picturesque shorelines. This rocky beach is conveniently located just a short drive from downtown Nanaimo and offers clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling during warm weather.
Neck Point Park is gorgeous for walks and there are numerous trails to take. It takes you along the ocean and has many views of the inlets and rock formations. It rained today but I managed to get some shots of flowers, beach and the trees. You can walk at your own pace and there are view points throughout where you can admire what nature is all about. The trails are well laid and there are hills that some may require assistance getting up and down. Take it all in and enjoy one of exceptional parks in peaceable tranquility:)
Barb — Google review
There are many parks along the coastline, but Neck Point Park truly stands out and is definitely worth a visit. The trails wind along the waterfront, offering a mix of forest paths and open viewpoints—some with railings, but many that lead you right down to the rocky shoreline. It’s a great spot to explore at your own pace and get close to nature. On a clear day, the ocean views are absolutely stunning. There’s also a lovely picnic area conveniently located right next to the parking lot, making it perfect for a relaxing lunch with a view.
JJ — Google review
A great place to walk around! The views were incredible and the terrain was nice and easy. We saw lots of bunnies, a beaver and even a sea lion in the water. We walked around sunset and the views of the water and mountains were gorgeous! We had no issues with parking however the lot was somewhat on the smaller size.
Kelly B — Google review
Great place for. Quick and easy hike with breathtaking view. The park have several view point and all have stunning water view. There’s also sitting area all over the park. It is accessible via public transit. There is very limited parking spot so come early if you want to get a good place to park. Very windy when exposed close to the water. Perfect to do early morning or late evening for sunset view. 2 hours is enough to hike the area. There is restroom at the parking lot area, there’s no place to buy snack so bring your own. Highly recommend this place for a day trip when visiting Nanaimo, BC Canada.

Neck Point Park is one of the absolute gems of Nanaimo. The trails are easy to walk and take you along rugged coastline, with incredible ocean views at every turn. It’s a fantastic spot to watch for wildlife – I’ve seen sea lions playing just offshore, and on lucky days you might even spot whales passing by. The sunsets here are stunning, with the sky lighting up over the water in ways that make it hard to leave. Whether you’re out for a peaceful stroll, a bit of photography, or just want a quiet place to sit and take in the natural beauty, this park never disappoints. A must-visit in Nanaimo!
Bradley D — Google review
Absolutely a must see! The walk isn’t too long or difficult. It’s stunning along the whole path. So many photo ops. The parking lot of decent size and has washrooms. They even have wheelchair assess-ability to the water !!! We are visiting and so glad we were suggested this stop!!
Ange D — Google review
Park, the pearl of Nanaimo or a romantic's dream. A very romantic place at sunset. In the soft light of the sunset, a great place for a photo shoot. Perfect for romantic dates and family walks at sunset. You can also meet the sunrise in this park, for those who like to get up early.

Neck Point Park is such a hidden gem in Nanaimo! The trails are easy to walk and give you amazing ocean views at every turn. It’s the perfect spot for a peaceful stroll, a bit of wildlife spotting, or just sitting by the water to soak up the scenery. The rocky shoreline and little coves make it extra special and super photogenic. Whether you’re out for a walk, a picnic, or just fresh air, this park is a real treat!

Pipers Lagoon Park is an 8-hectare waterfront park in Nanaimo, offering scenic trails with stunning ocean lookout points and views of historic Shack Island and Neck Point Park. The park is a paradise for bird enthusiasts, with a variety of bird species to observe including seagulls, horned grebes, sandpipers, loons, kingfishers, and great blue herons.
Loved this stop. The trail is short and offers countless views of the water, little coves, and pretty flowers in bloom (mid may). Was windy but as the trail winds there were moments where we were blocked from the wind.

Great spot to stop by during a Nanaimo trip. It’s a short coastal trail right along the beach with beautiful, breezy views—peaceful and scenic for a picnic or an easy walk. The path runs between water on both sides: a calm lagoon on one side and open ocean on the other. There’s a brief rocky uphill section to cross to the opposite side of the park, but it’s manageable and adds a bit of variety. Overall, a relaxing, low‑effort outing with memorable views.

5/5 Stars Pipers Lagoon Park is a hidden gem! This peaceful retreat offers stunning views, scenic trails, and a beautiful beach. The lagoon's calm waters and surrounding greenery create a serene atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and nature walks. The park's trails are well-maintained and offer scenic views of the lagoon and surrounding hills. The beach is picturesque, with interesting rocks and tide pools to explore. It's an ideal spot for picnics, reading, or simply unwinding. What I loved most about Pipers Lagoon Park is its tranquility and natural beauty. It's a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and connect with nature. Highly recommended!
Karan P — Google review
Piper’s Lagoon: where you come for a “quick walk” and end up taking 87 sunset photos, having a deep life reflection, and accidentally following a seagull for 10 minutes. Trails? Peaceful. Views? Instagrammable. Vibes? Immaculate. Just watch out for the tide or you’ll be stranded like a scenic shipwreck. 10/10 would get lost in thought here again.
Bhargav K — Google review
Ideal spot to catch some absolutely spectacular sunsets, and the occasional moonrise! I’m currently using a mobility scooter for a broken ankle and this whole area is very accessible with the flat lightly gravelled path that goes out along the lagoon to the little island area. Plenty of seating along the way on benches or on giant driftwood logs by the water. This will be a regular destination for me for catching evening sunsets without driving too far.
Jonathan R — Google review
Always a favorite area of Nanaimo, and a popular choice for many. Dogs are invited along too. My Chi, Bob, enjoys all the new scents the ocean brings in, along with finding new critters. Great photo spot and an awesome tree fort!

A pretty park with some nice seaside trails and a cool rock that you can climb to the top for a good view. Beautiful place to go for a walk on a sunny day. Does have public washrooms available. Parking is limited and the small parking lot does seem to fill quickly.

Great beach and wonderful trails. Lots of benches, Lagoon is nice to swim in. Some sandy areas. Lots of beach areas and a great hike around a beautiful scenic island. Views of shack island and more. Lots of benches for relaxing and enjoying the views.

The Old City Quarter in Nanaimo, British Columbia is a charming downtown neighborhood that seamlessly blends historic and modern elements. Centered around the iconic Nanaimo Bastion, this area showcases the city's 19th-century origins through its heritage buildings, antique shops, and landmarks like the Nanaimo Courthouse. Visitors can explore classic Victorian homes alongside newer developments while enjoying a mix of shops, cafes, and businesses.
Lots of little shops to visit. First, we went for breakfast at the Breakfast Nook, which really is such a great place and good meal. Then we went into Kitties and Cream to buy cat toys for Fancy and Awesome. They had cats in for adoption, so we played and petted the fur babies there. That was really a gun adventure.

This can be a really cute place after 9AM and on sunny day. I love the vibe but if it’s a bit bigger so that I can have more place to explore as well as take pictures, that would be great.
Flin N — Google review
Old City Quarter is such a charming part of Nanaimo with a unique vibe you don’t find everywhere. The area is filled with little shops, cafés, and restaurants, each offering something special and different from the big chains. Walking around feels relaxed and inviting, with heritage buildings adding to the character. It’s a great spot to browse, grab a coffee, or discover local treasures. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, Old City Quarter is definitely worth exploring and enjoying!
Kenneth L — Google review
I came from Vancouver to explore the Old City Quarter, and when I arrived it was all closed and very quiet because of Thanksgiving. Most shops and cafés were closed, so I didn’t get to see much of the usual local vibe. Still, I loved the heritage-style buildings and cozy streets — it feels like a place full of character. I can imagine it’s much livelier on regular days with the local boutiques and restaurants open. I’ll definitely come back another time to see it in full swing.

Petroglyph Provincial Park, located in Nanaimo, is a small but fascinating park that offers a glimpse into British Columbia's indigenous history. The park features interpretative plaques and over 1000-year-old prehistoric rock carvings depicting animals, mythological sea creatures, and human figures. Visitors can follow a clearly marked trail to view the petroglyphs and learn about the area's history through information boards.
Great little stop. You have to pay close attention for the entrance as it is a hard right on a corner on Hwy1. Perfect for a 10 minute keg stretch with an easy walk in a short uphill section.

We stopped here on our way to the ferry. It was a nice little stop. The trail to the petroglyphs is about 600 mts. No washrooms or wheelchair access.

Wow this Petroglyph site is amazing ❣️ A roadside rest area along with this Park, it's a nice rest from the highway or if you're passing threw. Located just as you will enter the city. A beautiful walk to the Petroglyph site, real easy not very long and then the return back is a loop, nice trail. The Petroglyphs date back Centuries and are in great shape can still see them as well the knowledge provided for each Petroglyphs. Since Time immemorial First People's have occupied the lands of Turtle Island 💯❤️🔥😎Long before newcomers had arrived. Walking this trail to get to the site is like walking back in time ❤️ the many Generations that had knowledge of this site and how it's still Here❣️ Just like the First People's We Are Still Here 💪🏾✊🏾 Knowledge is wealth. I always strive for knowledge, stopping bye this location it offers just that! And it even shows where there are other Petroglyphs site's are located, I found that awesome 👍🏽 off to the other site's I wanna find 😊

The park wasn't as big as I was led to believe, however it was still beautiful, it's a quick little hike through some beautiful forest in Nanaimo, the Indigenous Petroglyphs were pretty cool & the information on them informative as these particular ones were not just found on Vancouver Island but some of the surrounding ones as well. ❤️
Chrissie K — Google review
This is a very short trip so definitely have more on your itinerary for the day. This place takes about 20 minutes to see, very short walk up a small hill. The petroglyphs need to be preserved and the area taken care of, it would be horrible to lose this piece of history. I think I come down to a lack of respect for the people that built this area as there are signs of vandalism and graffiti in and around the site. Thankful to have seen this place and experience this historic petroglyph in person.
Booyaka ( — Google review
I read some fairly poor reviews before going and can't say I disagree. The parking lot was large. However, the pull off comes up quick as your driving. The short hill up was a bit steep for my bad knees but was not far from the parking lot. They have a main circle of casts to view with a path going further up. I sent my son to take pics of the real petroglyphs but he only found one, after he stepped on it accidentally. The park was a bit overgrown, many rocks were defaced by graffiti and people have used trails as toilets so watch where you walk. I read there was a cave somewhere with homeless people and needles but we didn't find any of that. Ultimately, if we weren't wasting time before a ferry, I would have been annoyed at the wasted effort. It's sad to see it in poor shape and disrespected, otherwise it could have been a cool little place to explore.
SB W — Google review
Short walk to the petroglyphs. This park is not in the best condition. The petroglyphs were covered by grass and dirt. Looks like there’s some vandalism happening. We still enjoyed the visit to the park. It’s good for a 30 min quick stop. Read up on history, look around and imagine what it would be like there during the time when petroglyphs were getting carved out.
Jen S — Google review
We took the 515am Ferry and this place caught us by surprise when we got off. Our family enjoyed the history of this indigenous site but it was really cold first thing in the morning on our trip to Tonino. But it is a site that was beautiful during sunrise.

The Vancouver Island Military Museum in Nanaimo offers a captivating exploration of Canada's military history, featuring exhibits on the navy, army, and air force. Situated atop downtown Nanaimo, this 8-shaped museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts such as weapons, medals, uniforms, and models. With over 25 displays honoring Canada's military history and Merchant Navy, visitors can delve into significant wars and the roles played by the armed forces.
These guys know their history. I brought my dad, husband, and 2 daughters in to experience the museum and it didn't disappoint. The kids donated to every donation bin they could find, it was hilarious. The gentleman walked with us, telling us many detailed stories and my husband had an absolute blast. My dad was whisked away into the past and had a wonderful time. My daughter's had lots of questions. To their delight, he answered them all! When I was a teenager I remember walking around outside and as a kid we took field trips there and ate outside, which is now fenced off to preserve the buildings, but the memories are there still there. I absolutely recommend dropping a donation in their bin! Spend time enjoying some educational conversations. This place is important to our local history. I toldy husband to apply there. He was schooling the scholars🤣😘

I recently visited a wonderful military museum in Nanaimo with my brother, and it turned out to be a truly memorable experience, thanks in large part to Greg D. He was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about history, and he took the time to guide us through the exhibits focused on both the First and Second World Wars. Greg shared fascinating stories about the global events, but what made it extra special was how he connected them to local history. He told us about individuals from Nanaimo who served during the wars, which really brought the exhibits to life. Hearing about the sacrifices and contributions of people from the area gave us a deeper appreciation for the community’s history. The museum itself is well-curated, with artifacts, uniforms, and photographs that help you feel connected to the past. If you’re in Nanaimo and have even a slight interest in history, I highly recommend stopping by—and if you’re lucky, Greg D. might be there to share his stories.

Absolutely amazing curation of Canada’s historical past in regards to all military involvement including peacekeeping and the RCMP. Our guide Brian was extremely knowledgeable and a terrific storyteller. He captivated us the whole time and after almost two hours we needed longer to see and learn all there was offered. We discovered so much of what Vancouver Island and local residents did to affect the outcome of past conflicts. This is must visit

The Bastion, a historic wooden fort built in 1853, stands as a symbol of Nanaimo's rich history. Originally constructed by the Hudson's Bay Company, this three-story structure has been relocated and restored over the years. Today, it serves as a prominent landmark and a testament to the city's past. Visitors can explore its interior, which houses historic artifacts and offers insight into the area's early trading activities.
The most famous historical landmark in Nanaimo. The museum inside is small, three levels, and only open seasonally but entry is free (or by donation) - It's definitely worth a visit when in town during the summer.

A nice tower which it’s worth takes a 5-10min tour inside it. Nothing much btw! Some info if you are interested in: It is an octagonal, three‑story blockhouse built between 1853–1855 by the Hudson’s Bay Company to safeguard coal interests on Vancouver Island! It is the only freestanding wooden bastion built by HBC remaining in North America! It was used as an office, arsenal, storage, and refuge during coal mining era (1853–1862)
Jalal K — Google review
Very cool historical location with very knowledgeable staff! They fire the canon at noon during the summer, with the staff dressed in historical garb, so this is a neat experience as well!
Jonah F — Google review
It's a white tower that was built to commemorate the joining of BC into Canada. It was closed when I went, but it seems to house a cannon.
Chris Y — Google review
This is a real gem in the heart of Nanaimo. It's a great spot to get a picture of the city, and it is super cool to tour inside. The historical interpreter was knowledable and articulate, and there are many interesting artifacts to explore. Over the summer, you might be lucky enough to see the cannon fire or hear a traditional bagpiper play a jig. Free to enter, but a cash donation is encouraged.

Bowen Park, located in Nanaimo, BC, is a popular 36-hectare park with a rich history dating back to 1931. It offers various amenities such as a swimming pool, tennis courts, sports fields, playgrounds, and an outdoor amphitheater for private events. The park's lush forest features interpretive trails perfect for exploration.
We really enjoyed strolling through this park shortly after landing in Nanaimo in the last week of July. We parked near the Frisbee golf and walked a short way down the path adjacent to the creek while looking for the waterfall. The path was closed off due to construction on a foot bridge crossing the creek. We back tracked a bit and crossed the stream in a really shallow dry area thinking maybe the path was on the other side just up the bank in the trees a bit. Someone had attached a rope along a steep part of the bank that helped getting up and down the little footpath. Once we reached a higher look out point we realized we had walked right by a small encampment of about 3 or 4 tents well camouflaged. We decided to cross back to the main side and go up and walk along the road till we found some nice ponds and a waterfall. It was all very lovely nature and we actually did the whole walk twice after I realized I lost my sunglasses somewhere along the way. Thank you very much to the person who found them and hung them on a chain link fence in a visible spot. On that return trip we also noticed some movement in a smaller pond and stopped to watch a group of otters eat and swim around for probably 20 minutes. I will definitely return to this park again when we are in Nanaimo.

Absolutely wonderful park ruined by complete neglect by the city, like many prominent parks in Nanaimo. Wouldn’t recommend it to families with homeless roaming around, especially after dark. The city and Royal Canadian Mounted Police need to do more to protect our parks and public spaces!

I come to use the large hall. It lots of daylight. Nice parquet wood floor Quite a nice space for dancing. Acoustics are good without amplification.

We stopped to have a bite to eat and stretch out the legs and ended up spending time walking around this beautiful gem nestled within the cityscape. Some nice trails to walk and great scenery all around. Kids had fun with the dog checking out the pathways and the waterfalls. Would definitely like to come back and spend more time finding beautiful views of this place.

So much to see at Bowen Park. Lot's of hidden gems along the trail. We love the duck pond but be sure to bring some bird food for the kids enjoy feeding the ducks. I did not see any sign boards feeding the ducks. Correct me I am wrong. Lots of birds and other wildlife to see. It would be fun to do bird watching here. The trail is wide which is good for Social Distancing. The falls is amazing. Instagrammable beauty. We love the fall colors and the moss accent. The trail is mostly flat and easy. We enjoyed our walk and took a lot of fall pictures. I cannot believe that it is situated at the city center.

Volleyball horseshoe and Tennis courts, and a fine disc golf course. Magnificent trees and a scenic creek. Newly paved paths are great for cycling through the forest. Shelters and BBQ stations. Photos show the open south east part of the park. The upper area and the creek itself are even nicer.

Great place for the entire family. From bowling greens, public outdoor pool, tennis, Frisbee golf, to walking trails, duck pond, and picnic tables and wheelchair friendly. You can spend an hour or day having Fun and play.

Went here at 8am for the first time with my laboring wife to walk prior to going to the hospital.... Many people looking like they're tweaking walking out of the park as we went in.. continued on to park and go for a short stroll that quickly ended. Multiple homeless encampments. Didn't feel safe to go any further. Unfortunate. Nice facility and area if it was usable and safe for the general population.

Newcastle Island Marine Park, also known as Saysutshun, is a popular destination accessible by ferry from Nanaimo. The 1,000-acre site offers a campground, scenic trails, and bays for swimming. It has a rich historical background with remnants of ancient Salish villages and is considered a healing place for the Snuneymuxw First Nation.
Saysutshun Provincial Park is located on Newcastle Island, and it feels wonderfully secluded, very peaceful and quiet, with very few people around. There are several long trails to explore, and my favorite is the one along the shore where you get amazing views of downtown Nanaimo from the island. The ferry ride costs $15 for a round trip, and the ferry only takes about 8 minutes to get there, making it a perfect little escape.

Boat access only, any boat you like. Pay for the ferry, use a kayak, or swim from Protection Island 🏊🏼‍♂️There is a cafe open for lunch, walking paths, cliffs and coves, old quarries and settlement sites, and obviously lots of beach. It's beautiful for camping or day trips!

My first visit to Saysutshun, it was breathtaking!! Absolutely beautiful, definitely where I would want to do a camping trip - or just walk the trails like I did with my man. Such a beautiful place!!!

Take a fun, short boat ride and arrive on a beautiful little island perfect for hiking a couple of hours. You can walk all around the island in just a few hours and the views are stunning.

Just 10 minutes by ferry from Nanaimo you will find Saysutshan Island, a place of deep peace and beauty. Right now I am watching a harbor seal bobbing up and down in the passage off shore looking toward Protection Island. You will see Eagles and Heron, plus many shore birds. Sail boats and ferries gliding by. Several First Nations memorial poles. Camping is available. Water, trails, restrooms, kayak and bike rentals, concession stand, and a history installation.
Helen R — Google review
Camped for 2 nights and went for a dip in the ocean. Very peaceful place to camp. Lovely weather for the September season. -1 star due to the concession closing earlier then the camping season 😢 Every campsite has a picnic table/s. There's one full flush washroom with many stalls and a shower. The rest are large size, metal outhouses with cement floors. Dogs are allowed on leash. There's a playground near the kayak/bike rental building. See Jeff about renting a bike or a kayak!

This was my first time camping on an island with trees. I'm from Nunavut and we don't have any trees. The island is beautiful! I saw an eagle flying, I had to cover the little puppy so it doesn't take it for its next meal 😂. Me, coming from Nunavut, I wasn't expecting to go camping to a place with cell phone service, running water, garbage bins, outhouses, let alone a place to take shower (for loonies). This place has all of that! Lol The Concession is a nice little place to get some food, drinks, and merch. The beer is nice Not very many options, but I didn't even think they'd have beer available. It was a nice surprise. I had remembered to bring everything on the face of this Earth to this Island, but coffee. And the Concession had run out of coffee for a couple days, too, so I just had to drink my tea to get caffinated. 🙃 Overall, the food was good, coffee was ... I wouldn't know, view was beautiful, ferry was small and cute, weather was hot, water was cold, the experience was great. I had so much fun! P.S. - I found a sand dollar! It was my first time seeing a sand dollar. Lol

Great Park to spend the day or just an afternoon. There is good trails and rocky beaches to hang out on. Bring your own food and wine or beer on a sunny day. The best place for a picnic is Mckay or Angle Point. The small ferry from Nanaimo harbour is $9 round trip every 30 minutes. The ferry stops at protection island on the way with its pub on the water.

Discover the delectable Nanaimo Bar Trail, a self-guided tour of 39 top spots in Nanaimo that offer their unique take on the iconic Canadian treat. This trail showcases various interpretations of the classic Nanaimo bar, featuring layers of chocolate, coconut, and custard cream. Originally designed as an energy snack for outdoor enthusiasts, this dessert has become a staple in cafes and bakeries across the city.
Small but mighty! Live music, cozy, classic bar. Like dive feels, but better! This is my favorite place in Nanaimo! The workers are FANTASTIC. Jose works hard, is friendly, and makes great drinks. Sit at the bar, or at a table. Place fills up fast and can become a party. Other nights, quieter and very chill. I love the art hanging up that's local, and supporting local musicians. Thanks for everything!
Delise L — Google review
Was in town for a conference and hit the Nanaimo Bar for two nights of fun. Staff was friendly and drinks came out quickly even with a fairly large party (30+ both nights) on top of regular crowd. Missed the musician on the first night but the DJ on Friday was pretty strong and when our group flooded the dance floor he upped his game to 11. One of those small town bars that have been around forever. It's got some wrinkles but she still knows how to have a good time. Did not have food so no rating.

Stopped in here last night on a whim with two friends and had an excellent evening. The staff, Jason, was professional, warm, welcoming and funny and spoke so highly of both the owners and his fellow staff that I didn't want it to go unnoticed. From the quick service, to the great music and selection to of beers/alcohol it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and we will be back. The other patrons seemed very comfortable, and there was a wide mix of people which is always lovely to see. Thank you so much for such a great evening!
Brianne M — Google review
Last night, I paid a $20 cover to see a DJ. The music was fine, but the experience was ruined by the male bartender’s behavior. My friend and I ordered one drink each. When he later offered us another round, we both clearly said no and asked for the bill. Despite this, he returned with two more drinks. When we reminded him we hadn’t ordered them, he insisted we had and then slammed his fist on our table when we refused them. This was aggressive, unprofessional, and made us feel unsafe. I will not be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend this venue to anyone who expects respectful service.
Kyra C — Google review
So welcoming and chill! It really feels like the neighborhood bar you want. The drinks are great and the bartender is awesome! I love that you can order food from next door (sushi!) and have it brought to you here!

We had a lovely visit to the bar. Jason the bar tender was an exceptional host. He was telling us about the owner Sonia, who according to him is an awesome person who tends bar on the weekends and everyone in the community loves her. Sorry we missed you Sonia. As we were drinking our beer, we enjoyed the background music which was upbeat. Overall a positive experience, alas we won't be in town when a band is playing which is our misfortune. I think we would have enjoyed our visit even more. Check it out of you are in the vicinity.

Lake
Nestled in Nanaimo, Westwood Lake is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The lake offers a lifeguarded freshwater swimming spot during the summer months, along with amenities such as a sandy beach, playground, washrooms, and change rooms. Visitors can explore the well-groomed 5 km trail that encircles the lake, suitable for activities like walking and jogging. Additionally, the area is ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding.
I love the recent renovations at Westwood Lake they’ve really made the area more attractive and enjoyable. The addition of a new playground makes it much more family-friendly, which is great for kids. It’s such a nice place to walk, relax, and unwind. The natural beauty of the lake makes it a perfect spot to spend a peaceful day outdoors.
Edz G — Google review
It’s a big park and good practice before you go on a big hiking trip (5km). I would recommend going with someone because going alone too far in this park is a bit scary if it is your first solo trip. Good places to sit and read, with lots of benches and a beach. The main parking lot is under construction, but there is a parking lot behind that has a lot of parking.
Marla S — Google review
The pros: Great beach and wading for littles to wade and splash in the sandy shoreline. Plenty of shady areas with the trees (set back from the beach). Two separate beach areas. Accessible beach and change rooms - there are some newly renovated change rooms and sitting areas. A water refill station - be sure to bring your reusable water bottles. There is usually a food truck or two here during the summer months. Great 5.5km hike around the Lake. Cons: Swimmers itch - be sure to shower as soon as you can. Parking is a nightmare (this is why my rating isn’t 5 stars). Spots aren’t labeled in the one lot and it basically becomes a free for all with plenty of honking.
Breanna G — Google review
Probably one of the most popular places in Nanaimo. The latest renovations, I hope are many that are needed. It would be nice to have directions for some of the off beat trails.
Thelma M — Google review
Our favorite lake to head to for a local outdoor adventure. Lifeguards on duty during the summer at first beach. There is a wheel chair accessible path along the boat ramps and down to the washroom facilities. Second beach has a dock to swim too as well and there's an outdoor playground for kids. The trail around the beach is over 6 km long so take water with you. There are some cool mountain bike trails behind the lake and around the power line clearing.
Trevor H — Google review
Westwood Lake is great for all kinds of activities - swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding. I've enjoyed the 6 km hike around the lake. It's not challenging, good for long walks or jogging. Fantastic views for photography enthusiasts. There are some special trails for mountain bikes. Dogs are allowed, leashed only. Some areas of the park are close to private residences, just don't be loud outside of normal hours. There are two parking lots, spots for disabled persons. Picnic tables are available. Washrooms need some improvement. I didn't find changing rooms They might have been just closed due to coronavirus, I am not sure. There was no sign available. I struggled changing after swimming in the lake. There were two tiny stalls in the women's washroom, none of them had one single hook for a bag or piece of clothing.
Larisa S — Google review
I grew up a deer trail away from here. Westwood lake is a beautiful place to run, swim, kayak and so much more. There is a 5.51 km trail around the lake. This lake gets over crowded in the summer daytime with families. Parking is free if you can find it. The Canadian geese can be a bother and sometimes the lake gets closed because of a build up of bacteria and pollutants. I prefer the quieter times personally but they’re harder to find too.
Kelly P — Google review
I train here for triathlons. The lake gets somewhat busy at times, but not to the point where you can't swim safely. From the lake, you can ride a really nice road on your bike and back, which is about 30km with 600m of climbing. And there is a very nice path around the lake of approximately 6.5km with just a little bit of climbing.

Great place to relax and hang out in downtown Nanaimo. The park is large with great views and atmosphere. It can get noisy at times due propeller aircraft noise, as the Nanaimo habour serves as an airport for seaplanes. There are a lot of unique statues and a large playground.

You'll love this cute, little, harbourside spot! It features the official Saysutshun ferry landing and the popular NANAIMO sign, offering a great photo op for memories. I enjoyed the unique food trucks right by the water, and my kids always have a blast at the play area!!
Joanny M — Google review
Maffeo Sutton Park is what happens when a city actually tries. Perfectly perched along the waterfront, it offers sweeping harbour views, well-kept paths, and just enough public art to feel cultured without being pretentious. There’s space for everyone. Families with sticky children, joggers with far too much energy, old men feeding ducks, and the occasional seagull mafia planning their next pastry heist. The playground is excellent, and there are enough benches for existential reflection or discreet ice cream consumption. Bonus points for clean washrooms (rare), thoughtful landscaping, and being a five-minute stroll from downtown without feeling like you’re going to be run over by a delivery van. A lovely, well-used public space that feels genuinely civic-minded. Five stars. Bring snacks, but guard them. The gulls are bold.

Gabriola Island is a forested island known for its beaches, waterfront parks, hiking trails, and diving spots. The island has a vibrant artist community and hosts cultural festivals. Visitors can take a car ferry to explore the unique Malaspina Galleries, where the shoreline's sandstone cliffs resemble a cresting wave due to erosion by the ocean.
Gabriola Island is one of the most beautiful islands I have ever visited. The people are all very friendly, helpful and talkative. You always meet nice people with whom you can have a short chat. Apart from that, it also offers a beautiful nature. Beautiful forests as well as wonderful beaches. You can see otters and seals on every beach. Deer can also be seen frequently. The small village in the north of the island offers some restaurants and various stores. There are also two stores where the artworks of various artists who live on the island are sold. This is also definitely worth a visit. All in all I can really recommend this island. A very special spot on earth, for which I think there is no comparison.

Nestled within the enchanting Benson Creek Falls Regional Park, Ammonite Falls is a natural gem waiting to be discovered. The trail leading to the falls winds through a mystical forest, offering glimpses of delicate flowers and ancient moss-covered trees. Named for the abundance of prehistoric fossils along the creek bed, this hidden oasis invites explorers to uncover these remnants of ancient life.
Very peaceful and quite walk through the forest. Lots of stairs to reach the falls, and it will take around 30 minutes to reach ammonite falls. The walk is definitely worth it and you get to see lot of birds as well.

The waterfall wasn't flowing heavy when we came, but the hike is definitely worth it. Lush forests, tall trees, incredible plant life! Very beautiful natural area!
Shayleen M — Google review
The trail is well marked and well groomed. The trail is steep in some places but very manageable. Watch for slugs! There are lots on the trail and they are quite fun to find. It was a beautiful hike very close to the city. We got there around 9 am for the hike and spent quite a bit of time at the falls. By the time we were leaving the trail around 11am there was getting to be quite a bit more foot traffic! I suggest starting this trail in the morning for a more quiet hike.
Seanna A — Google review
Ammonite Falls in Nanaimo is one of the region’s most rewarding short hikes, offering a perfect mix of forest serenity and natural spectacle. The 4.8 km round-trip trail winds through lush, moss-covered woods filled with towering trees and the soothing sound of running water. The path is generally well-maintained, with recent upgrades like a sturdy staircase and viewing platform making the final descent to the waterfall much safer than before. The main highlight, of course, is the stunning cascade itself—especially impressive after rainfall when it roars down into a tranquil canyon pool. True to its name, the area holds ancient ammonite fossils embedded in rock, adding a fascinating touch of history to the experience. While the hike is moderate and suitable for most fitness levels, parts of the trail can become muddy and slippery, particularly after rain, so proper footwear is a must. Summer visitors may find the waterfall less forceful, but it remains picturesque year-round. The walk typically takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, making it ideal for a half-day adventure close to town. Overall, Ammonite Falls delivers a refreshing escape into nature—a blend of peaceful forest, geological wonder, and the soothing charm of Vancouver Island’s wild beauty.
Zia W — Google review
A walk through the woods to falls and fossils. It was the end of summer so the falls were nearly dry. I didn't see any fossils but there are supposed to be many there. A great afternoon out nonetheless.

Nice trail through the bush. There are some steep hills. Decent amount of stairs at the end. But well rewarded.
Austin M — Google review
Lovely hike amongst the old growth forest leading to a majestic waterfall, don’t forget to search for the impressions left in the rocks of fossilized ammonites.
Amanda — Google review
Located within Benson Creek Falls Regional Park near Nanaimo, Ammonite Falls is one of Vancouver Island’s most popular waterfall hikes. The trail winds through lush coastal forest, filled with mossy trunks, ferns, and the sound of flowing water. The route is moderate, with a few steep sections, but recent upgrades—stairs, bridges, and a viewing platform—make access much safer and more comfortable than in years past. The waterfall itself drops in a graceful curtain into a rocky amphitheater, especially impressive after rainfall when the creek is full. In summer, the flow slows to a gentle cascade, revealing layers of sediment and traces of the ancient ammonite fossils that give the falls their name. For photographers, this spot offers excellent opportunities: misty forest light, long-exposure shots of the falls, and rich green textures throughout. Early morning or late afternoon provide the best lighting, while spring and autumn deliver the most atmospheric conditions. Ammonite Falls is a perfect balance of accessibility and adventure—a short, rewarding hike through classic Vancouver Island scenery that ends in one of its most photogenic natural settings.

Colliery Dam Park in Nanaimo is a serene and wooded destination offering a variety of activities. The park features about 2.3km of trails suitable for hiking and jogging, with options to extend or shorten the route. With an easy difficulty level and minimal elevation gain, visitors can enjoy the picturesque views of the lake and discover hidden gems like a waterfall through a tunnel under the highway.
Natural beauty, right inside city limits — with trails winding around two serene dams, shaded by towering trees and alive with birdsong. There’s beach access for wheelchairs and strollers just over the bridge to the left of the Lower Dam — such a thoughtful feature. The Upper Dam is an off-leash zone and usually full of splashy, happy dogs living their best lives. Benches and picnic tables are scattered throughout the trails, making it easy to stop and soak it all in. It’s very clean — I rarely see any garbage. There are bins near the parking areas, though not along the trails themselves. Bathrooms were open at 8:30 a.m. when I visited. Parking is easier at the Lower Dam; the Upper tends to fill quickly. Such a calming, magical space. Highly recommend.

One of our favorite parts was the off-leash dog area — it was so fun to watch the dogs jumping into the water, chasing balls and sticks, and playing together. There are several nice spots to stop and enjoy the view, and the whole place is super easy to walk around. Plus, there’s plenty of shade, which made it really pleasant even on a sunny day.

Always love my walks at the off leash section of the dam. It's such a big area that even when the parking lot is packed sometimes you don't run into anyone else on your walk.

Such a wonder to have a Nature Park like Colliery Dam in the heart of Nanaimo. Free parking, loads of space. It's a large park. Trails are well spread out around the reservoir to below the dam and falls. There's much to see and explore with abundant Wildlife. Dogs run free in certain areas, and the views are grand anytime of year. You must check out Granny Falls as well while visiting the Park.

Just a heads up....Coming from Alberta, any park review (from me) on our "Local" Big Island (yes, beautiful Vancouver Island!) is going to be AMAZEBALLS! What I enjoyed about this beautiful natural park are the natural trails with thick lush green fern ground foliage and mature cedars and evergreens 🌲 🏞❤️. There are a couple or more watering holes for swimming (essentially mini lakes) and best of all, are all the amazingly friendly hikers and their dogs! I also LOVE that they have a part of the park that is designated offleash for dogs! 🐾❤️🐶 My girlfriends and I went on the 1.5 hour sultry hike the first week of September on a Sunday midmorning-noon and it wasn't busy; a pretty nice and private hike! P.S. Beware of the static BEAR (as per picture!) 😆😅😂🤭🤭🐻🐻😝 🫶 Beautiful British Columbia

Post Modern Jukebox was terrific. Sat in loge seats and had the best view, with unlimited leg room and no one behind. Side to side room excellent. Not a bad seat anywhere. Easy and ample fairly priced parking

Awesome theater. The stage and viewing area is comprised of multiple floors worth of seating. My school's graduation was held here and it was an amazing experience. Also an amazing place to host plays, movies, musicals, and concerts.

This venue this theatre is an amazing piece of engineering and artistic triumphs. The stage is just perfect. The stage wings are huge. The hall from stage right to stage left is set perfectly for any performer needing such an entrance. My time upon this stage was amazing. I will update if, eventually, I see a show in the theatre itself. Backstage is inspired. The figure is a staging prop for lighting fyi.

Pub
Restaurant
The Dinghy Dock Pub is a one-of-a-kind floating establishment located in Nanaimo Harbour, just off Protection Island. Accessible by ferry, this unique pub offers a nautical-themed experience with pirate flags, fishing floats, and antique diving equipment adorning the walls. Visitors can enjoy cocktails, delicious food, and live music while taking in scenic views of the harbor. Families are welcome to dine here as well.
Caught the ferry to visit this pub. What a really cool place. Ashley was an outstanding server. Checking in on us to let us know when drinks were on our way, food and how everything was tasting. We felt very well looked after.
Kaitlyn D — Google review
Such a cool experience to take in when visiting Nanaimo. You start by taking a short boat, ride over to protection Island and then find your spot at the pub either inside or on the deck. We had fish and chips and I enjoyed a fresh wild salmon burger which was absolutely amazing. They serve local beers which is always appreciated. The music was 10 out of 10 and the environment was exactly what you'd expect of an ocean side pub.
Todd A — Google review
Part of our vacation plans was coming here for lunch. A relaxing ride out on their ferry. Had the halibut and chips (100% yum!!). Our server Ava was amazing. When I come back out, The Dinghy Dock Pub is on my list.
Scott N — Google review
I work Fridays and usually grab dinner here afterward. The staff actually talk to me. They care. That's not something you find everywhere, and when you're dealing with depression and anxiety, it makes a real difference. They know me, they're good to me, and I actually feel comfortable here. This is why islanders love this place. It's about the people working here who give a damn. There's something about sitting on a floating pub, watching the water, having real conversations with staff who remember you. It's one of the few places I can just... be. Now, to be fair – the food isn't going to blow you away. This isn't the Keg or Cactus Club, and yeah, it's on the pricey side. But that's honestly not why I keep coming back. I come back because the Dinghy Dock has become part of my routine in a way that genuinely helps. Sometimes that's worth way more than a better burger somewhere else. If you're just looking for good food at a fair price, this probably isn't your spot. But if you understand what it means to have a place where people actually care, you'll get why this pub matters to the people who live here.

I recently visited the Dinghy Dock Pub and honestly loved everything about it. The atmosphere is super relaxing with beautiful waterfront views, and the whole place has a unique charm you don’t see often. The staff were friendly, quick, and made the experience even better. The food was delicious — fresh, well-seasoned, and served hot. Drinks were great too, and the overall vibe just made it a perfect spot to unwind. Definitely worth the visit! I’ll be coming back for sure. Highly recommended. 🚤🍻🌊

This place is a very unique place to go!! It’s a must however it’s trek with Ferries and everything. Well worth it tho. It’s a fantastic old boat, it’s super neat. The staff were awesome and friendly. I didn’t know about the food, and to my surprise it was delightful. Then a small hike around Protection Island! An excellent way to spend the day. Plus they also have a very reasonable Happy Hour.

Parks
Jack Point and Biggs Park is a picturesque spot located at the Duke Point ferry terminal, making it an ideal place to relax while waiting for your ferry. The park offers stunning views of the ocean and the city, with a trail that leads through tree-covered paths and alongside the estuary. While there are no nearby restaurants or food shops, visitors can bring their own snacks to enjoy during their visit.
First time visiting this trail with our Walking group. The weather wasn’t the most cooperative, luckily only a little bit of rain. I can only imagine how gorgeous would be with sunny blue skies. Although the beginning of the trail is a bit noisy due to the close proximity to the ferry terminal and the mill, once you are past that, it is quiet and peaceful. I would rate it as a medium trail, definitely lots of stairs and in wet weather, some of the trail could be quite slippery. The views of downtown Nanaimo, and at the far end of the trail, you can see Gabriola Island. We were lucky enough to see two ferry boats passing in the channel. I would like to go back in the summer when there’s more leaves on the trees. There is a fair sized parking lot, and also a few intricate carvings on the rocks. Also found a geocache.
W B — Google review
Beautiful trail along a stunning part of Vancouver Island. See views on downtown Nanaimo, the mountains, sea and maybe even a BC ferry. Trail is not stroller or wheelchair accessible as it has multiple sets of stairs. Takes about 1-1.25 hours to complete while walking with minimal stops. There are a few benches, logs or rocks that you could sit on if you need a break or would like to picnic somewhere along the way.
Karlee W — Google review
Cool rock formations at low tide and lots of little crabs in the shallow pool. Nice walk along the ocean with a few places to go down onto the rocks. Great view at the point plus seeing Nanaimo across the channel.

We had a very pleasant walk at Biggs Park, but it’s important to know where to start from to make the most of it. Don’t rely solely on Google Maps, it can lead you to the wrong spot. Instead, check the official website for the correct parking location, which brings you directly to the start of the path. You can’t park along the road (especially if cars are already there), and cannot park there for walking access. Once on the path, the walk is relatively short and easy, with beautiful views throughout. If you go at low tide, it’s even more fun, you can spot unique rock formations and collect shells. Definitely worth the visit, just make sure you start from the right place!

It boasts over 150 stores, making it the largest mall in the area, covering an impressive 724,713 square feet. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of retail chains, clothing stores, and even catch a movie at the cinema. The center also features a spacious food court and clean restrooms for added convenience.
A good size shopping mall in the area with lots of brand name stores and local shops. Food court, coffee places and seating areas. Lots of outside free parking as well. Recommended

Woodgrove Mall is a fantastic place to shop in Nanaimo! It has a great variety of stores, from fashion and home goods to tech and unique local shops, so there’s something for everyone. The layout is easy to navigate, and the mall feels bright and welcoming. It’s also nice to have plenty of food options, whether you want a quick snack or a sit-down meal. Parking is convenient, and the staff around the mall are always friendly. A really enjoyable shopping experience!

I love this place. I live in the states unfortunately and don't get it often. In the past I've been lucky with having a cashier sell me a bag of gravy mix , I wish they would do that more readily. This one didn't here in Nanaimo! Too bad, I still love it
Julie V — Google review
Woodgrove Centre in Nanaimo is a fantastic place for a day out. It's clean, well-maintained, and has everything you need to get things done, whether you're shopping or just looking for a nice place to walk. The mall has a solid variety of stores, and I was pleased to see a Winners right there. The food court is a definite highlight, with plenty of diverse options to choose from—it's not just your typical fast food. The walking areas are spacious and well-lit, making it easy to get some exercise while you browse, and the washrooms are notably clean. For those with electric vehicles, the Tesla chargers in the long parking lot are a huge plus. The only small downside I found was with the parking lot itself. While it's very large and has plenty of space, finding a different exit can be a bit confusing. It seems like most people are funneled out through the same main roads, which can get a little busy. A better-marked or more varied exit strategy would be a helpful improvement. Overall, Woodgrove Centre is a great place to visit. It’s got a clean, modern feel with all the key amenities, and it’s a wonderful spot to spend a few hours. I highly recommend it for both shopping and a relaxing stroll.

The restaurant prides itself on using the freshest ingredients and meticulous attention to detail in every dish, resulting in classic Japanese flavors with impeccable presentation. Visitors rave about the top-notch quality of the dishes, making it a must-visit for those seeking authentic and delicious Japanese cuisine.
Perhaps we got lucky because our experience at Nori was beyond doubt the best! Our server was perfect and never missed a beat.. Watching the Sushi Chefs was most entertaining in itself! The hi’s and bye’s and unexpected banter was fun! I started with Oysters on the half.. Oh ya so good! Rolls presented like art work! A poke bowl that was unmatched from anything had before..And wait for it …Desert of deep fried ice cream! Holy! You have to go ..The experience shall amaze you..We shall return..

The restaurant is very popular and the food is delicious. The service is good, they refill green tea for free. You need to book a table in advance, especially for dinner. Despite the delicious sushi, it was hard to relax, a lot of noise, everyone sits close together. The interior is very simple. In my opinion, it is better to buy online and take away. There is plenty of parking.
Vlad S — Google review
First time visitor here from Vancouver. Will I come back? Most likely yes. Food: really good overall. The negikura roll was unlike anything I've had before. It was heavenly. Transcendent, dare I say, and only because it combines two of my favourite aspects of any sushi: ikura and negitoro. Unfortunately, the yosenabe udon (not pictured) was not flavorful at all and mostly just spicy. The regular spicy tuna roll (not pictured) was very good. The D.A.M. good roll was nice, but the rolls aesthetics were better than the taste. Nothing crazy, just simply good. Service: overall, good. A little inconsistent on the speed, maybe because of a busy lunch hour. Between placing the order and getting three rolls was around 10 minutes, but it felt like 5, it was so fast! But the yosenabe took about 30 minutes which felt like a long time. Each server was friendly and made sure our tea cups were full. Price: decent, maybe a bit on the high side. Two specialty rolls costed $42 before tax. They were, however, filling and delicious. Portion size: good. They don't cheap out on the portions here. Presentation: all the food was presented nicely, especially the specialty rolls. Nothing was sloppy when it comes to presentation. Final verdict: a gem to visit in nanaimo if you're craving good sushi. I would love to try some of their other items next time. The negikura was definitely a game changer for me and I will be ordering that one again for sure. Whoever came up with that idea deserves a raise!
Day V — Google review
Everything was absolutely delicious and fresh! The portions are big, and the service is quick and attentive. The staff are kind and welcoming — you really feel cared for here. They also serve complimentary green tea, which is very tasty and refilled as much as you like during your meal. The atmosphere is cozy, especially if you book a table by the window. It can get quite busy and a bit noisy on weekend evenings, so it’s not the most private place — but if you want truly good sushi, this spot is definitely worth it! 🍣🍵✨

The food was genuinely delicious, with each dish full of flavor and cooked to perfection. The atmosphere added a lot to the warm, lively, and welcoming, making it an ideal spot to relax and enjoy a meal. I’ll definitely be returning because the overall experience was impressive. Just a tip: make sure to book in advance, as the place gets busy and you might end up waiting if you walk in.

The first night, we had a private booth. The second night, we had a table in the middle. Noise was rather loud, and other customers were fairly close. The third night, we sat at the counter and watched the sushi masters ply their trade. The food was excellent all three nights, except the tonkatsu was a little dry. Service was very good. My wife's favorite sushi restaurant.

We recently visited Nanaimo and enjoyed some solid Japanese food. We tried the pineapple tempura, Catch the rainbow roll, and chicken yakisoba. While none of the dishes completely wowed us, they were all tasty and prepared well. The food here is good for Nanaimo standards, but it's not quite on the same level as what you'd find in the Lower Mainland. However, the real highlight of our meal was the service. Our server was exceptionally friendly and attentive, providing a top-notch experience from start to finish. They truly made our visit memorable.

The 5.5km trail, though challenging, takes about 1 hour and 46 minutes to complete and offers opportunities for hiking, snowshoeing, and trail running. The falls are particularly stunning after heavy rain, with a pool at the base that visitors can dip into. The trail begins at Creekside Place parking lot and winds through a tree-covered forest providing ample shade.
Feb 2025 Ammonites Falls / Benson Creek Falls Regional Park *Not an easy winter hiking trail with the melting snow with some ice formation at the bottom. Quite slippery for some slope. I didn't make it to the Falls given time. Follow the signs and you should be able to reach the Falls around 1 hour with careful snowshoeing, i.e. about 2h return trip, or 2.5-3h return with photography. *Wear adequate and appropriate equipment, bring enough food and water, notify your friends/family, and avoid hiking alone *You can reach the spacious Ammonite Falls Trail Parking Lot at the end of Weigles Road (bypass the narrow yellow parking gate before this large lot)

A great hike and an amazing waterfall as a reward. Dipping your toes in the water and listening to the sounds of the waterfall. Makes you glad to be on this planet! :)

Lovely hike to the falls. We went during July and the water flow was very low. We chose a moderate hike and took 40 mins each way. Quite easy. While going to the water be cautious as the stones are very sharp.

We had a morning hike here. Very peaceful place.

Parking is available in the location. The washroom is available in the parking lot only. It will take about 15 to 20 minutes to reach the waterfall if you don’t deviate from the right trail path. The trail is beginner level hike. Swimming under the waterfall after the hike was amazing.
Jain G — Google review
Much more accessible now with the new stairs to the waterfall. It used to have a rope to scale down before. Mind you, now everyone and their dog can visit. It’s about a 35 minute hike from the parking lot but there are some good little hills to climb. Summer is the worst month as the waterfall is low but still an enjoyable hike. We saw some woodpeckers and deer on this latest trip.

Visited in December after heavy rain and the falls were at full force. Beautiful sight and worth the 90 min round trip hike (from the Creekside parking). Surprisingly, the trail was mostly dry. There were some paddles and middy areas, but they could be easily avoided. The trail is clearly marked the whole way. The trail itself is not super scenic, but it’s a nice and somewhat challenging hike, there are some areas where you have to go uphill. The stairs at the fall could be challenging. Once you go down to the falls - prepare to get a little wet.

Ammonite Falls is just magical ✨ Great for families, walk/mini hike with friends and bring your friendly dogs along! Trails are quite safe as there are always people there and the scenery is indescribable. Most photos will not do the falls any justice (some will of course, with professional photographers who know how to evoke emotion through a photo). Definitely worth the visit!

Buttertubs Marsh Park is a popular destination in Nanaimo, offering an easy and accessible loop walk that takes about 30-40 minutes to complete. The park provides opportunities for wildlife sightings and birdwatching, with well-maintained gravel paths that are wheelchair accessible. Visitors can enjoy the peaceful and natural surroundings, observing various wildlife such as birds, beavers, turtles, raccoons, and deer along the roughly 3km trail.
Nice place to walk that is dog and bike free. Very peaceful. Takes about 20 to 30 minutes to do the whole loop. Lots of wildlife to look for, birds, beavers, turtles, and more. Flat trail, easy walk for all abilities.
Kelly N — Google review
Close to where I live and is a beautiful place to walk. Especially during sunrise or set. The marsh is beautiful with its dragonflies, frogs and birds. Would love to encounter one of those turtles but they are usually hidden. See lots of joggers and bird watchers there. Easy loop you can do several times in one go.

Easy little loop walk. If you take your time it's about 30-40 minutes. You can possibly see some wildlife and it is a good spot for birdwatching. Paths are easy to follow and level so it is very accessible for all. There are a few benches and look out points along the path. Parking off the Bowen side can get full so you may have to park up the street when entering from that side. There is a port -a-potty on the Third Street side.
Brandietta — Google review
It’s an easy access, level walk with wonderful views of the wetlands. So many birds clinging to the cattails and reeds add colourful moments. With lots of benches along the trail, it’s a perfect spot for a picnic or a quiet contemplation. I love it

Look what I found today on our walk. Just stood there and stared at us. This beautiful setting for a short tranquil walk with or without a friend is lovely. I enjoy the walk and sights each time I go. Sometimes with family from far away.

Beautiful park. Easy loop that have tons of entry and exit points. I started my walk at the ice skating rink, followed the trail and it led me to Buttertubs. Good place to do bird watching. Lots of birds especially when it's sunny. It is a good idea to bring camera with good lenses or binoculars. Ideal for stroller too. I haven't done duck feeding, but I'm thinking of trying or I'll check out first if it is possible. I saw deer and heron along the trails. I love how quiet the place is.

Beautiful park for observing wildlife, particularly for birdwatching. We have also seen deer, raccoons, squirrels, and beaver. The trail around the marsh is flat so really good for those with mobility issues. It is very family friendly, but do stay on the trail. Bring your camera or binoculars, or relax with a book on one of the many benches. It's a real gem in the middle of the city.

A flat, 2 km loop around a small marsh is a lovely walk! No dogs means the birds are safe, and often, unique birds come to visit. Tonnes of blackberries in August. Small, intermittent sections of shade.

Sugarloaf Mountain Park offers a short climb to a breathtaking panoramic view of Departure Bay and the city of Nanaimo. Despite its unassuming street entrance, the rocky steps lead to a spectacular lookout point, perfect for watching ferries or catching a sunset. The hike is short and provides stunning views, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a quick yet rewarding outdoor experience.
A great viewpoint! You can see all of Departure Bay, faraway islands, and lots of pretty houses. Very amazing!
HIBOU — Google review
The trail head is at the end of Marion Way (which is only accessible off Little John Road) and it consists of a series of stairs that are first carved in the rock face before a set of wooden ones that lead to a flatter rocky knoll. A steep, steady incline but fortunately a short walk up and well worth the effort. An absolutely amazing panoramic view awaits you at the top! An expanse of the Salish Sea, Newcastle Island & channel, Gabriola & Protection Islands in behind, Departure Bay and I expect Mt. Baker (on a clear day) in front of you with a portion of the city, the wasted land that is the Nanaimo golf club, Mt. Benson & neighbouring hills behind you. There are a couple of park benches to rest on while you take it all in but nothing else up there, save for the garbage a handful of lazy and/or disrespectful people have left behind. C'mon people, whatever you take with you needs to also leave with you, including your cigarette butts! The only thing left behind should be your breath the hike and view will undoubtedly take from you. Enjoy and do your part in keeping it enjoyable for all visitors please.

Even though it was raining but we had to check this place out. I’ve been to Nanaimo couple of times before but never got a chance. This place is definitely worth it. Nice little stairs to begin with, it just takes like 5 mins to get all the way to the top. Watch out for slippery grass especially when raining. Need to look for parking too as mountain’s entrance is in middle of residential area. Absolutely love it though..

Park
Living Forest Oceanside Campground & RV Park is a popular and well-equipped campground located near Nanaimo, where the river meets the sea. It offers 300 spacious sites on 53 acres, catering to both RVs and tents/small tent trailers. The extensive site menu includes various options such as oceanfront, riverfront, and forested sites with amenities like 30-amp and 50-amp electrical hookups, sewer, water, showers, and Wi-Fi.
We stayed for four nights in one of the waterfront spots. All the hook ups I needed were conveniently placed and it was peaceful and quiet. The facilities were dated, but work. The office staff and Cafe staff were fantastic. I also loved that they are pet friendly. If you're lucky, you can watch the seals play in the estuary. We will stay again for sure!
Lauren P — Google review
Stayed here on our road trip to Tofino for two nights. Decent campground. I love there was a private beach. Staff at the front desk were friendly enough. Each spot had great privacy. Washrooms and showers were good too, not AMAZING but good enough. There was a toilet that was plugged and sometimes people left messy toilets, so it would've been nice for more frequent checks of the toilets but I know things can't be perfect.
Martina P — Google review
Travelled across Canada, and this was definitely one of our favourite campgrounds. It had a playground (not huge, but it helped the kids burn off some energy). There were canoes and kayaks for rent. Laundry facilities and showers on site, for a fee. The camping spot we got was near the water (up a hill, but with a waterview), and it was quite nice! We would recommend this campground if you're in the area and looking for a place to park your RV or tent.
Cassandra — Google review
We stayed here in late July, in our motorhome. The staff are lovely, the RV park is well kept, with gorgeous sites and amenities that are well maintained. We were in a spot that was spacious and beautifully treed in on 3 sides. The trails around the park are well maintained and are an absolutely gorgeous, easy walk (walkable by able bodied, not necessarily accessible to wheelchairs, walkers or canes). This is one of our favorite camping spots on the island!
Rhea S — Google review
• Site was fairly level. • Staff were okay. • After guests check out, they come and clean the site, including the picnic tables. • Huge site, plenty of room. • Showers are pay, you need a token, each token is $1.00 for 5 minutes, but you can’t control the temp of the water. • Never tried their WIFI, they charge for it, which is ridiculous for what they charge. • Interior roads are very confusing, more signage would help. • Overall, I liked this campground, but you should be able to control shower temps and they should be free and WIFI should be included in the price. And those are reasons I can’t give it a higher rating. • On my last night, one of my neighbors was having a fire, DURING a fire ban, called the office and they didn’t seem to care…there is a fire ban for almost the entire province of BC • I would stay here again just because size of site, however there are a lot if other choices in the area.
Dale G — Google review
We camp there every single year and we love love it! It's right next to the Nanaimo estuary which is wonderful for swimming and paddle boarding. They also have a cafe and an adult lounge. There is a laundromat as well as a propane fill and in the office they have camping supplies and snacks.
Karen G — Google review
Definitely a great location as it’s near to everything. Lots of trees, great place to go on walks. Sites were clean and spacious. Not much of a beach though. This campground is very shaded which we didn’t mind. The wifi absolutely is awful unless you have a satellite you are not accessing anything which was difficult given we are full time rv’ers in a new province, we need navigation ! Even the front desk person said it was not worth paying the extra wifi fee because it won’t make a difference. They recommended two Falls to go see, we did which were not easy hikes to find there is no current falls. Not enough rain from the summer apparently. That was a huge disappointment. Still a pretty place.
Nanc P — Google review
The campground itself is beautiful. The sites are lovely and the staff were friendly. However, I was really disappointed that I wasn’t informed about the front gate closing at 11pm. I would argue this is something that should absolutely be mentioned at check-in. I arrived on Saturday, got everything set up, and then went out with my team (we were in Nanaimo for a softball tournament), not realizing there was essentially a curfew in place. The only timing mentioned to me was that the office closes at 10pm if I needed firewood. So, it was quite a shock to return and find the gate locked, with all my belongings still inside the campground. Thankfully, some friends let me stay at their hotel overnight, and I returned in the morning to pack up. Again, beautiful property and friendly staff, but I’d strongly recommend that the gate closure policy be clearly communicated at check-in or in booking confirmations to avoid future confusion or stress for guests. Edit after business response: Thank you for your response. I appreciate you taking the time to clarify the procedures, and I’m glad to hear you’ll be reminding the staff to mention the gate closure moving forward. That said, I do feel it’s important to emphasize that relying solely on small signage is not sufficient communication for something as important as restricted access to the property. As a first-time guest, I relied on the check-in process and the website to understand key details, and neither made this information clear. Having this information buried in an FAQ section or on small signage (which I only noticed after I was packed up) isn’t enough, especially when it involves an access code guests wouldn’t even know to ask for without being informed. In my opinion, critical details like gate closure times and after-hours access should be clearly highlighted on the website, mentioned during check-in, and included in booking confirmations...not left to signage that can easily be missed, especially when guests arrive excited, distracted, or in a rush to set up. This isn’t just about avoiding inconvenience, it’s a significant safety and security issue. Thankfully, I had friends nearby, but otherwise I would have been in a much more difficult and unsafe situation as a young woman alone at night, with no where to stay...simply due to a lack of information which is very easy to rectify. I don't understand why this detail is not more clearly outlined on your website. I hope this feedback is taken constructively, because as I mentioned, the campground itself is beautiful, but this was a significant miss. Thank you again for your time.

Westwood Lake Park in Nanaimo is a popular year-round destination offering a 5.5 km trail around the scenic lake, perfect for biking, walking, or cycling. The park features wheelchair-accessible fishing floats, swimming areas, and a playground for families to enjoy. With its 106-hectare wilderness terrain, visitors can encounter local wildlife such as geese, ducks, deer, and raccoons.
Beautiful spot for a swimming. Warm and clean water with a sandy beach. It also has a nice trail around the lake in the forest. Good for run or a walk. Definitely worth a visit on hot sunny days.

Westwood Lake is one of the best places to enjoy nature in Nanaimo. The trails are well-maintained, the lake is great for swimming, and it’s a family-friendly spot all year round. Recently, the parking lot, washrooms, and shower facilities were remodeled, which makes the park even more comfortable and welcoming. Whether you come for a quick walk, a long hike, or a summer swim, this park has everything you need. Highly recommended for locals and visitors alike!

Super cute little city park and lake! A very upbeat, family friendly vibe. I did the 5.5/6km hike around the lake first and was done within an hour. Beginner level, as I saw parents and kids. There is a steep area to get to/from the bluffs but so worth the view! I went paddling after and it was calm enough to do yoga on my board, but the wind picked up and brought me to the underwater forest area, where I passed right by a bald eagle! 🦅 The water is warm enough for swimming, but it made me itchy after. You can tell this is a simulated/not naturally occurring beach/lake, given the sandbox feel, and old trees/stumps sticking out of the water even in deeper areas.
Lucy — Google review
In the changing room, on the door, there is a warning for swimmers that this lake has the parasite which cause the ‘swimmer’s itch’. And it takes 2-3 days to get better then there could be rashes. Just fyi if you’re planing to swim. It kinda disappointed us as we planned to swim at first. Other than that it’s a nice place, clean water

One of my favorite places! Has a 6k loop trail around the lake that is a fam fav ! Beautiful scenery, lush green trees/plants! It's pretty easy trail with a rewarding view of Mt Benson at the end. Bit of incline there but my 6 yr does it with pretty minimal whining haha so I'd say easy enough. Worth it either way. The lake is beautiful with clear and warm water , perfect for kayaking and has a decent sized swimming area . 😀 definitely a must in Nanaimo! 👍👌

Hemer Provincial Park, located just outside Nanaimo, is a nature lover's paradise with 11 kilometers of well-maintained walking trails that wind through lush forests filled with Douglas Firs, Maples, and Red Alders. The park features a picturesque lake and marshland that attract various bird species, making it popular for birdwatching. Visitors can enjoy activities such as canoeing, fishing, and horseback riding in this serene natural setting.
This is a lovely park with some great trails. The paths are dog-friendly (and not too muddy) and the views of the water are spectacular. On this particular day, my friend, my dog, and I went to the park for a casual walk. We saw a beautiful cormorant near the start of our little hike and some swans near the end. My only gripe about this park is the tiny parking lot which forces people to park on the side of the road sometimes. Other than this, I highly recommend this park for anything from a family outing to a solitary, pensive walk.

Forested park with many options. Part of it does walk along a lake, which was my favorite part. The lake image is actually upside down and a reflection of the still water.

I really liked this park. 3 stars is because it hasn't seen some maintenance. A lot of branches litter the trails. I was happy to see small maps along 5he way however it could use some arrows to show which direction to take as there are a lot of smaller trails that branch off from main trail. Some people could get confused, like us, who took some wrong turns. It has a beautiful lookout over the lake. It's a lovely place and not a hard walk.

Wow! Awesome find in the woods outside Nanaimo - trails are fairly short and well maintained, also very kid friendly, mostly run around the lake but a few stem off the path. It's a great little walk wherever you're entered either the access point from the church across from Brooks landing or from Beach park trail just up the hill from the lights at departure bay terminal. You can pretty much walk up to a docked BC ferry, the beach access is right next to one. Follow the creek bed up along the path you might see a little water fall, but that's not the main one it's closer to the church entrance.

Beach Estates Park is a lovely little gem of a walk that travels through a lengthy ravine starting on Departure Bay Road across from Brooks Landing and takes you right down to the waterfront. At that point you can veer left or right to get to local neighbourhoods, or at low tide you can also walk along the sea floor to where it reconnects with the walking path at the BC Ferry Terminal. The City of Nanaimo is planning to connect these paths to extend the waterfront boardwalk. The park is made up of a series of paths, walkways, bridges and staircases that winds through a lush, mossy, green forest. It really is quite beautiful and is like a different world down there. There is a lovely waterfall along the path and at the right times during the year it is suitably impressive, especially as one of the more elaborate bridges crosses right in front of it. Do be careful as the steps, walkways and bridges can get quite slippery during rainy and winter weather.

We were there during the Sunday of the VIEX (Vancouver Island Exhibition). The midway was smaller than Calgary's, but with a good number of the rides and games you'd expect. The walking was hard with big rocks, puddles and few manicured pathways. There were vendors selling handmade crafts, a ferret rescue, a crafts competition, and agriculture exhibits. Fine event on grounds that could use some work.

We came for the fun looking playground. My 10 year old found it too simple, because none of the structures connect, which makes it hard to play grounders, lava tag, and other games. The 8 year old mostly enjoyed it. We saw lots of other young children playing while we were here. The walking path is on-leash dog friendly, though dogs are not allowed in the playground itself. The walking path is also bike friendly, but I would only bring bikes for little ones. The big gazebo has 2 picnic tables. The space is fully fenced. The big trees were appreciated. There needs to be more benches for adults. The toilet was relatively clean. The few garbage cans were empty.

Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park in Nanaimo offers a unique blend of adventure and history. Visitors can experience thrilling activities like a 150-foot plunge towards the Nanaimo River, navigating obstacles at 60 feet above ground, and ziplining through the trees. The park also holds significant historical value as it was once an active mine, with well-preserved foundations and informative plaques showcasing its past.
Nice amble down to the river with dog on leash. He enjoys his swims! Historically, you get a flavour how the town of Namiamo set up its commerce.

Nice short walk to the river and around historic sites. The paths are well cleared, but there are a lot of tree roots that make it not as stroller or wheelchair friendly as indicated. There are also two small bridges that have large gaps and are very vertical to get onto. It is doable with a 3 wheel stroller and the ability to lift it. I'm not sure how comfortable someone in a wheelchair would be.

Great walk to the Nanaimo River. Peaceful. Interesting industrial ruins restored recently. Ruined by horses. The trails are too narrow. The equestrians leave waste and take over the trail. Unfortunate. They should not be permitted in this small, narrow trailed park.

A piece of local and national history hidden away! It's surreal to imagine this being an active mine back in the day, but the foundations are all still there for you to see! There's a few information plaques around the site, and they include old pictures of the original mine when it was being built. Short trail (2km round trip) through the woods and over two bridges leads you to the Nanaimo River. We saw four or five eagles, and found old rusty mining cart wheels! Not a very popular spot. No toilets or garbage bins. Please clean up after yourself... And your dogs! 🙂

A unique step back in time to see Vancouver Islands last remaining coal mine standing structure. Nice trails. Currently (March 2021) the structure of the old mine is under construction, which is too bad. Lots of neat things to see, but wish there were more info about what the old broken down structures are.

Nanaimo Art Gallery is a contemporary art space featuring changing exhibits by local and regional artists. It offers an opportunity to delve into the city's cultural scene and gain insight into its artistic fabric. The gallery is located in the arts district, close to Nanaimo Museum and Vancouver Island Military Museum, making it a convenient stop for an educational afternoon. Despite its small size, visitors appreciate the well-curated and thought-provoking exhibits.
The homeschool program is fantastic!! I love listening to the gallery tour. The exhibits are always beautiful, rich with history. The little gift shop is full of local artists.

The Bombhead exhibit was up when I visited - interesting collection to view and read about given the European war currently going on. The gallery itself is small, one large room and a smaller closed-door room to view video. But everything is set up very well and entrance is by donation. It's also centrally located in the arts district within a few minutes of the Nanaimo Museum and Vancouver Island Military Museum - I visited all three and made for a fun/educational afternoon.

I love this place. Although this is one of the smallest art galleries I've ever visited, the exhibits are often well put together, mindful, and rich in substance. I think it is precisely because of the gallery's diminutive size that it has such an impact on its visitors. The gift shop often offers artworks made by local artists. Admission is by donation.

We visited the Nanaimo Art Gallery, they had their permanent pottery collection available for viewing as well as non permanent displays. There were also some pottery available for purchase by a local group. They had a pottery Librarian available for questions regarding the exhibit. Not a large art gallery but it was enjoyable!

City park
Linley Valley Cottle Lake Park in Nanaimo is a hidden gem, offering expansive lakefront views and forested walking trails. The park features picturesque viewpoints, perfect for picnicking and enjoying the serene natural surroundings. With large wooden staircases, charming stone bridges, and abundant wildlife, it's an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. The park provides a peaceful and private atmosphere with few visitors, making it suitable for family walks or solo exploration.
This is a beautiful park with lots of hidden vistas to find, and enough trails to get you lost in natural beauty for hours. It's also placed in the middle of the city, so it feels quite safe and it's easy to access with many entrances to choose from. Trails range from well-maintained and flat to rocky ascents/descents. The main trails are predominantly well-shaded all day long, while some trails have large sunny patches. Unfortunately there isn't a reliable trail map to follow, so you have to pay attention to your path if you're unfamiliar with the park.

🌿 A Wild and Wonderful Urban Escape 🌿 Linley Valley Cottle Lake Park is a true hidden gem tucked right into Nanaimo. The newly maintained pathways around the lake are beautiful and make for a lovely short loop. While it’s not fully accessible due to stairs, uneven terrain, and rooted areas, it’s absolutely worth the effort if you’re able to explore it. The trails are well-shaded, the grass is taller than me in spots, and the variety of flora and wildlife is incredible. One of my favourite moments was spotting a sign for the rough-skinned newt crossing, hands down the cutest sign I’ve ever seen! This magical little pocket of nature will be featured in my upcoming 6th Little Adventurers book exploring South Nanaimo. Add it to your list if you’re looking for something wild, beautiful, and full of surprises. 🦎🌲💚

First time walking this trail, we basically did the loop around Cottle Lake. We lucked out with a gorgeous sunny day, and we accessed it from Rock Star Road trail head. I can imagine that part of the trail would be more treacherous and slippery if it was raining, or after a large rainfall. They are building some metal bridges and boardwalks along one side of the lake, but in between there are rocky portions. Lots of roots, you need to watch your footing for sure. If you want to, take pictures or enjoy the view of the lake, make sure you’re standing still, because when you’re walking, you need to pay attention to the trail. But it was in great shape, and well maintained. Hoping to go back to try some of the smaller trails that branch off. We were with the Walking group that are mostly 65+, and the majority of them had no issue in accessing the trail. Please note there is a steep set of stairs from the trailhead that we started at, they are very sturdy, but there is approximately 50 steps so it’s a bit of a challenge to climb back up again. There is approximately 4 to 5 parking spaces near the signat the beginning of the trailhead and about 4 to 5 parking spots almost directly across the road.

A few trail options, nice area. The new walkway on the south side of the lake is a nice improvement. Couple areas on the south side that are a little hard it you have mobility issues.

Linley Valley Cottle Lake Park is one of Nanaimo's hidden treasures. It is lovely and expansive, with many long walking trails and some lovely vistas of the park itself. There are large wooden staircases and adorable stone bridges. There is abundant wildlife as well. I've seen what I believe were sizable partridges and wild turkeys (see photos... I love doing my photography at this park). In a matter of minutes you can walk from a somewhat busy residential road to the absolute solitude of this wonderful park. The first time I visited this park, I had to remind myself I was basically in the middle of a very large and populated residential area. It also reminded me a bit of the Experimental Farm back in Ottawa, Ontario, in that you can quickly get in touch with nature without having to travel for hours. It is a popular place for hikers and joggers and is often quite busy.
Alicia M — Google review
This is a hidden gem, there are so many great trails to walk, ride or run. There is everything, from easy to difficult. I have been to this park around 15 times and everytime I go I find a new spot, new trails. It connects with lost lake trail. 100% recommended. It has different entrances. Go check it out, maps don't show all the trails here.

Beautiful place. A few stairs, fyi. And if you're walking around the Lower Lake trail there are lots of tree roots. So lovely with lots of fresh running water. Gentle hills. Lots of little trails. My girl dog loved it. Trash bin and poop bags at trail entrance/parking area.

Nice spot for mid-Island entertainment. Plenty of slot options and a few digital table games you can switch between. The live table games seem to only open at certain times—I usually go during the day or midweek, and they’re always closed. Staff are friendly and pleasant, and The Well restaurant serves decent food at a good price. There are some good eat-and-play deals too, so it’s worth grabbing a meal first to score some vouchers (I made the mistake of playing first, ha!).

Nestled within the vibrant Maffeo Sutton Park, the Swy-A-Lana Lagoon Fishing Pier is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Nanaimo. This picturesque spot offers a delightful blend of natural beauty and recreational activities. Even on a grey, windy day, the harbor buzzes with life—sea otters frolic in the water while seals pop up to say hello. The pier is alive with crab fishers eager to share their catches and let visitors snap photos with their crabs.
It was fun crabbing, but the crabs are very small. We spent 3 hours there and none of the catch was big enough. Lots of people go home empty handed. I think I only said one lady with one crab that’s of size. But it’s a very nice pier. Garbage can and benches are along the pier and bathrooms are not too far at the park and very clean.

Awesome place to come for a walk, great views and friendly people. The crab fishers are always letting people check out what they catch and take pics with the crabs. 🦀 we just picked up some nets to start crab fishing here. Can’t wait to try it out! If you come here be sure to check out food truck Fridays in the park by the Nanaimo sign. You can get some bomb mini doughnuts like nothing you’ve ever tasted

It was a Grey windy day with a little rain but the harbour was teaming with activity I saw packs of sea otters chirping at and chasing one another a seal and lots of different birds it's amazing to see what with all the sea planes taking off and landing (which is kinds cool to watch) walking further down you can see all the tug boats and private fishing/pleasure craft . I love walking down the sea wall here summer or anytime of year

I had my third visit to Millstone Estate Winery and I can confidently say that I will definitely continue returning in the future. There are numerous aspects about this winery that I thoroughly enjoy. The ambiance is incredibly calm and has a charming rustic feel to it. The staff, especially "Ted the Attendant," are exceptionally friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. It was quite challenging for me to choose a favorite wine from their impressive selection, so I ended up leaving with six bottles!
I MUST RAVE MILLSTONE WINERY! After researching a few places for a girlfriend’s baby shower, I stumbled across their page and inquired. Dale was soooo accommodating and helpful and the price per person was very reasonable. It was such a beautiful afternoon and this place is truly a hidden gem. They have availability for Christmas Parties. I would say they could fit 30-40 people comfortably. Their wine is delicious and they have such a beautiful property. Check them out!! Millstone Winery

Spent a couple hours this afternoon talking to Ted while we tasted the wines, such nice people, even met the owner. If you're looking for super high-end polished okanogan wine this is not the place. But lovely down to earth funky atmosphere in the jingle pot area of Nanaimo suits me just fine
Scott T — Google review
I waffled about whether to leave a review but ultimately I think if you charge money for something that a customer can’t return (eg, a wine tasting), it’s only fair for customers to give each other an idea of what to expect. This is literally the worst wine we’ve ever tasted at a winery. We were a group of four - two “wine snobs” and two more mass-market consumers and we all ended up pouring out the remainders of our tastings. I’ve visited in the range of 100 wineries and have literally never done this before. The reds were undrinkable. The man giving the tasting was great and I’m sure was doing his best. I wonder if he is aware of how bad they are and is just trying to do his job. He mentioned that they were young and needed to age more…but this was like red wine vinegar. I can’t imagine another 3 months of bottle aging could save those, especially given that the whites were also so acidic. I can’t imagine a wine maker in good conscience charging a tasting fee for wine like this - especially one that isn’t even waived with a bottle purchase or I guess at least give customers warning that the wine is “not done” if that is truly why they were so bad We drove an hour round trip to visit this winery - save yourself the time and go to the ones to the south that are closer together. For us, the benefit is that we now have a fun memory of that one time we tasted the worst wine ever D:

Flight was less than a mouthful of 5 wines for $12. We still bought a $40 bottle of red. A few days later, after we got home, we opened the bottle and it was bad. My husband will normally drink anything but that went down the sink. Total rip-off…..

Hiking area
The Haslam Creek Suspension Bridge, also known as Mindy's Bridge, is a captivating feature along the Trans Canada Trail. Accessible via a relatively short and easy walk from the trailhead, this well-constructed bridge offers a lovely view of the river below. The trail leading to the bridge is surrounded by beautiful scenery and is relatively flat with some rocks and roots to navigate.
As a fan of suspension bridges, I had to check this one out! The Haslam Creek Suspension Bridge offers a short but scenic walk leading up to the bridge itself. Walking across is both thrilling and a little trippy, making for a fun experience. The area also has a small trail to explore, plus additional paths on the other side that are great for horseback riding or quads. If you’re in the area and love a good suspension bridge, this one is definitely worth the visit!
Mayhanna H — Google review
This short and easy hike is just a 10-minute walk. The bridge is quite fascinating, and the views of the creek are beautiful, making it a great spot for a quick outdoor escape.
S L — Google review
Do not follow Google Maps! Use the OTHER map location “Haslam bridge trail” as this way now has a gate. The Haslam bridge trail spot has a gate going up to Mount Hayes that closes at 6pm, but keep going until you see the trans Canada trail sign.
Sarah R — Google review
Approach from the south!! Drive through the construction side, even though it says no trespassing. There are no consequences for visitors. Very impressive place
Kaiser B — Google review
This is a beautiful place for a short easy hike. You can make it into much more then just the suspension bridge as there is a beautiful trail system back there.
Shari S — Google review
The trail was quite nice although difficult to find. It had the right amount of nature, pathway could be a bit steep in some places but overall a short trail, great for tourists. The bridge gave us a great view of the raging river and a thrilling experience.
Harleen — Google review
Nice trail. The way is a littlebit misleading and the Trailhead is difficult to find. Just trust your Google maps even if you have to go through private property and along a dirt bike track. It will lead you to a car parking (around 3 - 4 cars fit there at the same time) from where you have to walk approximately 10 minutes to the actual suspension bridge itself. View is good, and the suspension bridge itself is in a good condition. Definitely worth it!
Lukas T — Google review
This is a remote place not every one knows or goes to hike. As a part of trans Canada trail its little confusing to access because as we drive to access the trail head there is a private property days to No trespassing. This board discourste many people in easy route. Once you go through this area there is a small place to park and hike to this location. It is beautiful we can safely (only if youbare experienced and strong) climb down to creek to enjoy the water and complete views of suspension bridge. Please dont go alone, take a buddy as a safety measure and to give company to each other. We can spend one complete day to explore further on trail. There will be ATVs driving in this area please use caution..

Sunshine Woods Golf Centre & Driving Range is an 18-hole, 3 par golf course suitable for kids, beginners, and those looking to enhance their short game. It offers golf camps and junior programs, making it an ideal starting point for children interested in golf. The facility also provides a putting green and a full-sized driving range for players to practice. Additionally, the center offers golf lessons with skilled instructors like Jason.
Taking my golf lessons here from Jason. Don’t know what to expect/ compare really. The coach is nice and skillful. I know they just finished their clubhouse. You can have functions here, ie weddings or gatherings. With covid lifting, this is a hidden gem that less people knows about. We were going to held event here and their pricing is very reasonable. Their main club house is renovating to be a 9000sqft, very excited to see how it turns out. The driving range is also needs a little upgrade. Overall, it is the cheapest driving range around. Tho I have to mention, that you need to purchase your on tee if you want to practice your wood. Otherwise they charge you for it.
Briany T — Google review
Wow where do I begin. DO NOT PLAY HERE! This course is dilapidated, unkempt and the front desk staff are apparently instructed to enforce a “no refund” policy even if the guest does not end up playing. In the middle of summer, you are hitting off turf mats. The greens are in absolutely ABYSMAL shape, and the fairways (if you want to call them that) are essentially the equivalent of everyone in deltas front lawn that has been recently mowed…by a Ryobi special. The owner (offshore individual) has clearly neglected this asset and does not care for the customer experience or putting in any effort to improve this facility. Lastly, the price of $81 (2x green fees and 2x push carts), is TERRIBLE! If it was $15 per person, I could forgive the conditions, layout, lack of customer service, and general experience. But for $67 (2x green fees/ 2x push carts) you can play a PRISTINE 9 hole course in west Vancouver. This facility is an embarrassment and the owners should be ashamed.
Andrew R — Google review
Disappointing experience/Not beginner friendly. Brought three friends who are new to golf for a fun twilight round after some time on the range. We had a 4pm tee time and the course was nearly empty, with only 2–3 other groups out. We let one group play through and had no issues until a woman, who said she was the owner, approached us aggressively from two holes back. She accused us of playing the course twice and being behind pace, even though we were only about 20 minutes off (with no one waiting behind us). It was confusing and embarrassing, especially for my friends who were just trying to learn the game. If she truly is the owner, it would have been more professional to check with staff before making assumptions. The course itself is poorly maintained—artificial tee mats are falling apart, and overall conditions don’t justify the attitude toward paying customers. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem like a welcoming course for beginners. Management feels disconnected and more focused on confrontation than hospitality. Also way overpriced for a garbage course. Willows, at Surrey golf club is much better bang for your buck.
Harmanjeet S — Google review
Older 18 hole par 3 executive course for beginners and experienced golfers looking to practice shorter shots and finishes. They are working on building a new clubhouse, so the current facilities are limited. The driving range is a simple single level. The first three or four holes are in rough shape, but after that the course is much better, and the greens are well kept. All the tee mats need replacing. Im sure as the club house goes up other improvements will follow, however that will likely mean that the currently decent price to play will also go up.
Adam B — Google review
Great little course for the new and casual golfer. Pricing is fair and staff is nice. Excited for the new clubhouse. Would be greatly improved by some yardage signs on the driving range and a employing a proper greens keeper.
Steve S — Google review
Most dilapidated range I’ve ever been to. It already leaves a bad impression when you see that the pro shop is a literal trailer, and some of the clubs they were selling were so dented it looked like a tractor had ran over them. On top of that, the range was in awful shape, such awful shape that I could not hit a single ball unless it was on a tee. Only good for drivers, good luck using any other club here. Please just go to any other range that is 10,000 times better maintained and is basically the same price or even better value.
Ben D — Google review
This has got to be the worst golf course ever LOL. Very poorly maintained. And it’s crazy that they charging same if not more to courses that are so well kept. Definitely would never come back. Would advise others to go somewhere else save your money. Would rather not golf than come here.

Yellowbird Arts Gallery is a go-to place for art framing and purchasing pre-framed photography. The staff is known for their patience, inventiveness, and expertise in helping customers make the best decisions about mattes, frames, and framing styles. Customers appreciate the professional conduct, personable attitudes, and high-quality work of Yellowbird Arts Gallery. With over 100 options to choose from, the knowledgeable staff takes the time to advise and suggest suitable frames and sizes.
Years ago, we'd picked up a Bobbie Burgers pastel in Edmonton and always disliked how the anemic thin black metal frame it had been sold in did not complement the artwork. We were really happy with the framing selection at this gallery and quality of their workmanship was top notch! The frame now is more in keeping with the piece for our environment.

I presented them with a complex piece of art (a wasp’s nest) and asked them to put it between glass and frame it so it was as much abstract art as it was a wasp’s nest. They hit it out of the park. From start to finish they were open to something completely new, listed the challenges and then took the job on despite the challenges. The result was beautiful. Thank you Yellowbirds, you are awesome. What do you see?
Paul P — Google review
This shop beautifully framed a drawing of mine. The staff were polite and helped me choose the perfect frame. I’m so happy with the result. Would recommend this business and will return soon.

I am very happy with the framing of my mom's portrait, a photo of 1948. I was really leaning on Dave's knowledgeable and expertise and he took the time to advise, suggest and help me find the right frame and size. Which is quite a chore with over a 100's of options. Despite being very busy it was delivered as agreed and timely. Pricing is clear and fair. I was finally able to hang it at the perfect spot today. I also have a few of the Sue Coleman prints he frames and sells. I love them. Thanks so much to Dave and the team!

Wow! Yellowbird went above and beyond to provide excellent service. Exceeded my expectations!
Jennifer C — Google review
I've purchase in the past at this store and it was fine. I still very much like the piece I bought. However, a few weeks ago I went in to look around. The owner (I assume) was extremely snobby and rude to me so I left. I don't recommend supporting someone who treats their customers like this. Especially when there are other small businesses who are kind, appreciative and give common courtesy.
Jenn M — Google review
Amazing job. I've gotten three prints framed and yellow bird and I'm always amazed at how well the final piece looks! Knowledgeable and friendly staff as well.
Heidi S — Google review
I can readily say that I love Yellowbird Art Gallery because over the past four years I've had them frame about fifty pieces of artwork (give or take a couple)—and I'm nowhere near finished! What I really like about Yellowbird is the tremendous patience and inventiveness of the staff whenever it comes to helping me make the best decisions about mattes and frame and framing styles. I do not own a single piece of artwork I do not like because these folks simply do stellar work and, if anything isn't up to snuff, they always work with me to make any adjustments or corrections. It is because of the hard work of the staff of Yellowbird that my home is now filled with beauty and colour and it is for this reason that I strongly recommend Yellowbird to anyone who wishes to preserve an important or beautiful piece of art.

Park
Arbutus Grove Provincial Park is situated between Nanaimo and Parksville near Nanoose Bay, with no road access. It offers a serene natural setting for local hikers to enjoy nature viewing without any facilities. The park provides a recreational opportunity in a tranquil environment, although it requires visitors to walk a distance up and down steep hills to witness the great view of Upper & Lower Falls.
No road access - "The secondary role is to provide a recreational opportunity in a natural setting. Arbutus Grove Park is located midway between Nanaimo and Parksville near Nanoose Bay and is adjacent to the Island Highway, although there is no road access to the park. The park has no facilities and is used by local hikers as a quiet nature viewing area."
Mackenzie S — Google review
Beautiful space if you can find the unmarked trailhead. Park sign about 50’ into the trail.
Lisa L — Google review
No road access without trespassing in private drive. As far as I can tell, they created a provincial park that isn’t accessible to the general public to protect the arbutus trees in that area.
V A — Google review
This was not a developed park AT ALL. It's not marked, and most of the access seems to be private. Not sure why it's called a park other than it must be one of those crown properties changed into a park. Not recommended unless you enjoy bush-wacking up a hill, then back down.
Patricia V — Google review
Beautiful, level hiking trail -- good accessibility, but needs clearer signage, including end-of-trail and distance markers
Darrell B — Google review
Great view of Upper & Lower Falls. Not for those who cannot walk a distance up & down steep hills.

Google maps took me to two private roads. No signage and the BC website would give me directions either.

Winery
By chance, I stumbled upon Chateau Wolff Estate Winery and Vineyard, an organic, family-run establishment that produces limited quantities of wine. The wine tasting experience was delightful, and I particularly enjoyed their unique unfiltered Rose. Having spent the past month exploring the Pacific Northwest and Canada's wine regions, I've come to appreciate the individuality of each winery and the varying regulations in different states.
Visited in June, and was happy with the whole experience. The hostess was polite, and competent when handling many people with different groups coming in. Explaining and adjusting as necessary. She was able to explain the history and the actual wine. The wine itself was great and they use much of their grapes. Will buy again, and take friends to visit.
Juan S — Google review
So disappointed with the wine! I bought Syrah which I tasted for it at the winery. On the first picture which at the end of right hand side. It tasted good and the colour was dark. HOWEVER, I opened the one I bought home tonight, the colour and the taste was TOTALLY DIFFERENT! I guess that were they stuck on the wrong label on it? 😩😩😩😩😭 PS (5 days later) : I sent email to them after I receive their reply on this comment. But 5 days after, they didn’t response anymore. PS (a week later ) : I find that they are just said that they will give me a replacement, but the truth is that, they didn’t answer my email anymore! I hope that no one will be treated by them, so, open the wine you bought before you go, friends.
Miranda W — Google review
We popped in here by chance. It is an organic, family owned winery with small volume output. We really enjoyed the wine tasting and the wine we brought home with us. I have never had a unfiltered Rose before and it was very enjoyable. We have been traveling the PAC NW and Canada for the last month and doing wine tastings all over. Everyone winery is different and every state has different rules. This place allows for you to bring in your own cooler/charcuterie board so if you are looking for something a little more hardier then bring it with you. The board here is a little unremarkable but understandable as they are a small winery.
Julie C — Google review
Enjoyed sampling their wines. They have a nice charcuterie board too that pairs well with their offerings.
Fletcher M — Google review
Great quiet and beautiful stop for a flight of wine. We brought some cheese of our own and enjoyed our time outside.
Oai T — Google review
Enjoying the syrah. Even better than the tester. Nice atmosphere and owner very pleasant. Would have given 5 stars except for the cheese platter was very skimpy for $16....add bread to assist in wine tasting, you will sell more wine😉 Yes i would recommend and return 🙂

Chateau Wolff Estate Winery and Vineyard has undoubtedly secured its place as a haven for wine enthusiasts seeking excellence. Each bottle is a testament to the passion and expertise that goes into creating a truly exceptional wine. Cheers to Chateau Wolff, where greatness is bottled and poured with every ounce of dedication and love for the craft. Thank you for the great wine.

Jumping Jiminy's Playground & Cafe Inc is a fantastic venue for children's birthdays, providing all the necessary elements for a memorable celebration. From food to decorations, cake to entertainment, everything is taken care of in their premium room. Parents are also accommodated with seating options and ample space for everyone. The staff are extremely helpful and enthusiastic about making each child's special day perfect.
Wow! What a fun indoor park place to take the kids when it’s hot during the summer (as that’s when we visited!) We spent just over $30 for admission for two kids. They have AC, and a cafe. We got coffee and the loaded tots with bacon, cheese and onions … it was so delish! You have to wear socks, which adds to how clean they keep their establishment. I’m very impressed and we will definitely stop by again in the future. It also looks like from their advertising inside they throw quite the elaborate birthday parties. Excellent and friendly service. 5 stars all around. To the business owners - you’ve done a great job!
Tasha A — Google review
Had such a great time with the family today. The kids loved playing on the jungle gym and slides. The wife and I hung out on the comfy leather couch and watched them play for 2 hours. The cafe had very reasonable pricing for food and drinks , and on the way out I won 2 stuffies from the claw machine. I would give more stars if I could. Will definitely be back.
Darren O — Google review
We’ve had both our son’s birthday parties here since the new owners (who are fabulous by the way). The detail and care put into the decorations and cakes and the friendliness of the staff is amazing! They take the stress off of the parents’ shoulders and make birthdays amazing for these kids! Not having to worry about decorations or food prep or baking makes it all worth it. Thank you all for everything you do for the families that come through your doors. You rock!

it was our first Time here, We would absolutely come back. We are from Victoria. A long drive, but definitely worth the visit. It’s a super clean, great atmosphere!

Awesome indoor playground for kids. Theres quite a few slides, a Ninja wall, a small rock wall area. Adults are not allowed on the play structures (bonus!!). Theres plenty of seating including some couches as well as a cafe that serves snacks, warm drinks and cold drinks. Theres a handful of coin-op machines like stacker, claw machines and capsule vending machines.
Etch250 — Google review
My daughter had the absolute best birthday! We didn’t need to plan anything. The food, decorations, cake and entertainment were covered! I highly recommend the premium room as parents have a spot to sit and there was ample space for all. All the staff were helpful and just as excited as my daughter for her special day. The manager checked in on our group more than once and made sure her day was perfect. We can’t wait to go back!
Ashley K — Google review
It's closed. And according to the neighbouring business, they didn't bother to tell anyone -- including the birthday parties booked for after they suddenly shut down 😡 Kids have been coming from as far as Campbell River just to find the doors locked. Zero communication. There isn't even an informative sign on the door. This is terrible.
Rebecca J — Google review
Great spot to bring the kids on a rainy day in Nanaimo. It was about $10.00 for my three year old and free for adults. See pictures for the different types of structures and playground equipment that they have, bouncy castle was a huge hit and it has a basketball net inside. They sell snacks and coffee as well and also host birthday parties. I forgot my socks and they sold me a pair for $2.00 (no shoes on the carpet, socks mandatory). They have a section for the babies or young toddlers. Very friendly staff and the place is close to restaurants and other amenities. 4 stars!

Rondalyn, a Parkbridge Camping & RV Resort on Vancouver Island between Nanaimo and Ladysmith, offers luxurious amenities such as a heated pool, hot tub, and clubhouse. The resort is open year-round and provides well-maintained facilities for all seasons. Guests appreciate the accommodating staff who strive to fulfill specific site requests. Families enjoy the pet-friendly environment with amenities like a heated pool and 9-hole golf course.
We stayed in one of the cozy cabins and had a great experience overall! The cabin was clean and comfortable, and the bathrooms on site were spotless. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made the stay even more enjoyable. We loved having access to the pool and the small golf course—great little extras that added to the fun. One of the highlights was definitely the river nearby; it was peaceful and perfect for a quick walk or just relaxing by the water. The only downside was how close the campsites were to each other—it felt quite busy and crowded at times. Also, we were hoping the dog park would be a bit bigger to allow more space for our pup to run around and get some proper exercise. Overall, a lovely spot with great amenities, but would be even better with a bit more space and a larger dog area. If you do visit, be sure to stop in at the Timberland Pub and have a meal—great food and a nice atmosphere!
Lavonne R — Google review
This was our first time staying at this resort and we were very pleased. Super clean and well taken care of, very friendly staff. We had our two grandkids with us and our 10year old quickly made friends. Lots of kids riding bikes and enjoying the pool but it was still very quiet. Lots of people taking advantage of the small golf course. Our site backed onto the golf course but was still very private with a hedge separating. We had a pull through site with full services and only downside is the sites are relatively close but didn’t feel intrusive. We wish we had stayed longer, we will definitely be back.
Robin M — Google review
We had planned to go to Englishman River but had to change plans due to the wildfire smoke. The site itself is decent overall, and the staff were friendly. For the cost (double provincial campsites), however, the tent sites are laughably small with absolutely zero privacy, your tent will likely be a few feet from your neighbors. If you want a shower it's coin operated, and they won't do cash back from card, so you're out of luck if you didn't bring cash. The washrooms were fine, and the golf/pool is good for kids. Where the tent 'sites' are, expect to be woken up by people all around, the golf course, the dog park, and the extremely loud gate that opens and closes all night. If you're in an RV site, you're probably fine, but if you plan to tent, recommend you choose somewhere else.
Scott W — Google review
Beautiful park. Staff work hard to keep the park clean and landscaped. Always a smile or a wave and helpful with questions or concerns. Beautiful scenery every direction. Great walking and hiking trails. The islands best sites and amenities are within an easy drive. About 2 km from the Nanaimo airport, and 15 minutes from the Dull ferry terminal. We are already booked for next year and looking forward to it.
Leigh G — Google review
We had a wonderful experience at Rondalyn RV Campground! The service was absolutely top-notch, especially thanks to Carol and Alexa. My husband tends to ask a lot of questions, and both Carol and Alexa were incredibly friendly, patient, and eager to help with everything. Their warm, welcoming attitude really made our stay more enjoyable. It’s always great to feel genuinely cared for—thank you both for making our visit so pleasant!
Denise D — Google review
Very friendly staff. They made everyone feel welcome. The campsites and grounds everywhere were groomed to perfection. We enjoyed our stay to the fullest

Our rental cabin at Rondalyn Resort was great, as usual. We were down one chair and some bbq tools when first arriving and were given replacements to use during our stay. It was clean and in good repair and the little A/C unit is great especially for up in the loft, it can get very hot up there! It was so quiet during the week days. A very much needed R and R experience.

This is now our 'Go-to' RV Site..... for all the times we have been here, we have no complaints at all. Lovely pool for the kids (which is always well maintained) and the sites are the same.... looking forward to next season. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦⛺🏖💯

Cute little park. Washrooms are always locked and not really any options for shade on a sunny day. It's good for younger kids to crawl around on, though. The large hill beside it is great for sleading in the winter.
