Located on the northern side of Mowbray Park, Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens is a diverse venue that houses exhibits on industrial and social history, geology, glass and pottery, art, and archaeology. The museum incorporates the striking Crystal Palace interpretation of the Winter Gardens filled with exotic plants. Following wartime damage, extensive rebuilding took place with lottery funds enabling many improvements in 2001.
We had such a wonderful day at the Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens! I was genuinely impressed by how much there was to see and do – and the best part is, it’s all free to enter! It’s a fantastic place for families. There are so many interactive activities for children, from hands-on exhibits to creative corners where they can draw, build, and explore. My kids were absolutely fascinated by the live aquarium – watching the fish up close was such a magical moment for them. The Winter Gardens were beautiful, like stepping into a tropical paradise. The variety of plants, the warmth, and the peaceful atmosphere made it a perfect break from the busy museum areas. It felt like a hidden gem right in the middle of the city. The museum itself was full of interesting displays about Sunderland’s history, art, and natural science – something for every age and interest. The staff were friendly and helpful, and everything was clean and well-maintained. Overall, it was a five-star experience for the whole family. We left with happy kids, great memories, and we’ll definitely be visiting again. Highly recommended!

Lovely museum. It was free to enter, which was great. There were quite a few missing exhibits while walking round, and really annoyingly, the penny machine was out of order. I've been collecting these from different places for years, so it's always disappointing if the machines are not working or just not plugged in. In the museum there's quite a few floors, and the winter gardens. The scenic lift wasn't working, which, although didn't affect me, probably disappointed others. The winter gardens were stunning and had dinosaurs hidden throughout. Great view over the park too. There's also a few art galleries which frequently change. The museum had lots of different parts to it and was interesting to visit. There's plenty of toilets throughout, a lift to the different floors, gift shop, library and cafe.
Donna W — Google review
The garden area is lovely but quite small. There is a very nice goldfish area and beautiful plant life. The museum was lacking in proper boards to explain the exhibits. A lot of it looked like it had been there a long time, but the museum was in good condition and well maintained. I felt a bit bored tbh. The ship collection was probably the best part, the quartz and other crystals were also very nice. As it is free i probably can't complain, but if they charged £5 for entry they could probably refresh some things and make it more interesting. There is no parking there.
Leon K — Google review
Absolute gorgeous little gem we came across in Sunderland city centre. Decided to nip inside for the gift shop to get a few souvenirs, they have magnets, postcards, soft toys and more!! Was then told the museum was free and the gardens which are wonderful. We spent about an hour in here which took plenty of our free time up and it was a lovely experience from gardens to boats and trains to sunderlands history. 100% recommend to stop by had an amazing time!!
Abbie — Google review
Spent a lovely couple of hours here with my husband and grown up sons. Loads of things to see. I now feel I understand Sunderlands and the local area a little better. Free entry was a bonus. Enjoyed the winter gardens, koi carp are lovely. Cafe staff really friendly and attentive. Would definitely recommend a visit if you find yourself with a spare hour or two in Sunderland.
Germaine C — Google review
Great museum with loads to look at. Very friendly and helpful staff, children absolutely loved it went during 6 weeks holidays and had free treasure hunt and activities on. Disabled parking outside and pushchair friendly inside. Dinosaur area is brilliant and the local area history is fab, was nice to see the children interested in history definitely recommend. (Children aged 1, 4 and 10)

Great museum to visit, its all free to see. The garden is gorgeous especially the koi's, the smell of the garden just make you feel at peace. There is seating area in the garden to relax in. The museum is random stuff about Sunderland. There is a coffee shop inside to take a break and you have the park to walk around in.

First visit here and wanted to see the gardens. They didn't disappoint. I could have listened to the water all day! Visited the cafe and the coal mining exhibit too. Will definitely be back.

The National Glass Centre, built in 1998 at a cost of approximately 17 million, is a stylish and modern facility that celebrates the history of glass making. It features five galleries with ever-changing exhibitions showcasing stunning glass sculptures. Visitors can witness live demonstrations of glass making and blowing in the dedicated studio and purchase the results at the onsite souvenir shop. Sunderland's rich glass-making heritage is highlighted through its global companies like Pyrex and Hartley Woods, making it an ideal location for this center.
Our first visit here and was pleasantly surprised at the glassware and other exhibitions to look at.Its free to visit and it had a good glass blowing demonstration worth seeing. The cafe was not busy so we ordered two cheese toasties and pots of tea. The tea arrived within minutes, but we waited 40 minutes for the food which we had to rush eating it to get to the glass demonstration. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
Carolyn B — Google review
We took an unplanned trip to the National glass Centre, which didn't go down well initially with my son... but actually we all came away enjoying it more than some of us thought we would! On arrival, we parked just outside in the main car park, parking cost was not overly expensive (£3 all day or you could pay hourly as well). Entrance to the Centre is also free, my daughter wanted to look at the animal exhibition so we headed straight there first. We had a good wonder round and watched the glass blowing and glass flame work session. The centre also has some little activities for kids to do, and you can borrow an activity backpack to keep them busy which is a great idea.
Andrew C — Google review
This was a fascinating venue to explore, delving into Sunderland's history as a glass-making hub! The procedures of how the glass was made is detailed along with exhibits of the old material, photographs give a glimpse of these pieces being worked on too. Staff even provided a demonstration of how to make the glass now using the tools and burning furnaces, different objects such as glass plates and bowls are displayed too!
K. P — Google review
Recommend to check it out if your around the area. The gallery is a bit small to me and the contemporary art place was shut for change of galleries during my visit. Clean toilets
Kin O — Google review
We stopped by for an unplanned trip on a rainy day. Lots has been added since I last visited in the early 2000s. The demonstrations were very good and the glass artists very informative

Exceptionally friendly and welcoming staff. Both demonstration were fascinating both of which were kind enough to answer questions from my children. Cafe was good value with lovely views of the docks, highly recommend.

Excellent place to visit. My little boy (Age 5) was asking how you curve glass so brought him to here & watched the demo on making a glass vase. He loved it and there was lots of other things for him to do here like jigsaws, drawing, playing with blocks. Great place for learning and having fun

Hylton Castle is a 14th-century medieval fortress located in Sunderland, surrounded by lush greenery and offering a glimpse into the city's rich history. The castle features a distinctive gatehouse-tower built by Sir William Hylton, displaying royal and family heraldry including Richard II's white hart badge.
Amazing. Did Saturday morning tour of castle with Colin - he shared a wealth of information. He was so enthusiastic it was a pleasure. The Castle restored to an incredible degree. If this us your 'thing' then you dont want to miss a visit. View from rooftop was amazing. Shame spiral steps were just too much for our 93yr old Mam. Hopefully English Heritage will agree to a lift right to the top. Cafe - coffee was delicious as were the homemade scones. EVERYONE was helpful and friendly. Made it a great visit. DON'T MISS IT. Didn't get to St Catherine's Chapel - so good reason for another visit. Cafe open even just to call in for a cuppa.

Free to enter, but need to pay to go on a tour. Lovely cafe and the best toilets. Picnic benches and kids games on the lawn in the summer. Free car park.

Awesome day out. Pleasant grounds with plenty of picnic tables. Castle gatehouse and chapel are interesting and dog friendly. Make sure to check out the back of the gatehouse.

As a local, I’m delighted that the castle now has a purpose. The tours are really good, telling the history of the castle and the families. The grounds are great and there’s regular events on. The coffee shop is a welcome addition

Just been on a tour of the castle held by Colin and Dawn, absolutely fascinating! They were so knowledgeable and friendly and happy to help. The castle has been restored beautifully and was so interesting to learn about it! Will be back to try the famous afternoon Tea! Thank you for a great experience!

TL;DR: Hylton Castle in Sunderland is a beautifully restored historic site offering informative tours, a cozy tea room, and nearby cathedral ruins. Also available as an events venue! Hylton Castle is a fantastic historic site to visit in Sunderland. Dating back to the late 14th century, the castle was originally built as a fortified manor house and has since undergone restoration to serve as a cultural and community space. I pre-booked a tour on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and was thoroughly impressed by our guides, Colin and Dawn, who shared so much history and insight. The interior of the castle has been restored and repurposed for modern use, blending its medieval past with present-day functionality. On the first floor, there’s a charming tea room where you can relax after exploring. I also took a short walk up the hill to visit the ruins of a nearby cathedral, which added even more to the experience. The castle also serves as an events venue, so it’s worth keeping in mind for special occasions. Highly recommend a visit if you’re in the area!

The Stadium of Light, located in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England, is a purpose-built stadium primarily used for hosting Sunderland AFC home matches, occasional international games, and concerts. With a seating capacity of nearly 50,000 spectators, it is the fifth-largest stadium in England. The venue was constructed in 1997 and expanded in 2002. It serves as the home ground for Sunderland AFC and has hosted various football matches including those featuring the England national team.
Had a great evening out at the stadium for the opening match of the women's rugby world cup England v Sunderland. It's a nice stadium, great seats and a good amount of toilets.
Suzanne — Google review
Great local team ground but the stadium has seen better days. Pretty run down, would not recommend for hospitality or functions unless you’re a die hard Sunderland fan.
Ali G — Google review
The venue itself is perfect. Unfortunately, the stewards inside helping you find your seats were absolutely useless. Guiding us to the wrong area, being told we had gone in through the wrong turnstiles, directing us back outside and telling us to go in the wrong turnstile which would have taken us even further away from our seats. Eventually, someone took is to roughly the correct area and finally a very nice English gent who was extremely pleasant and helpful pointed out our seats. Most of the stewards need to learn where they are and some customer service skills.
Alan M — Google review
Iconic stadium, great atmosphere. The stairs up to the away section have humorous comments on each flight which are needed to supplement your oxygen dept when ascending. Don't attempt if you have a heart condition use lifts!Food ok but beer poor.
G T — Google review
A world class modern stadium. Lots of work invested this summer into improvements, such as a Michelin star chef hospitality option, new art work all around the turnstiles and a seven figure transformation of the upper concourses. A must visit for fans of English football and the Premier League.

The Sunderland Empire Theatre is a grand Edwardian theater that hosts a variety of shows including musicals, comedy, pantomime, music, and dance performances. It stands as an iconic cultural beacon in Sunderland with over a century of history and has seen famous names like Charlie Chaplin and The Beatles grace its stage. With a capacity of 2,200, it is considered one of the best theaters in the UK and has hosted major productions including musicals and operas.
Saw Hamilton here. The theatre was beautiful and all the staff really friendly and helpful. Ability to order drinks and snacks from your seat using QR code was a nice feature. The show was amazing as was the venue!
Gary H — Google review
Really nice theatre, smaller than the ones I am used to going to. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Prices for drinks and snacks were high but this is as expected when visiting a theatre, you can order for drinks to come to your seat but we didn't bother on this occasion.
Vikki F — Google review
First visit. Beautiful exterior. All the staff from behind the bar to management were lovely, helpful and polite. Seats were comfortable (especially in comparison to the Theatre Royal in Newcastle). There's a good range drinks and snacks, with seat service available. Production was great. Inside also appears to be well maintained. A great evening.
BROON B — Google review
Very ornate old building. Toilets were fine. A queue as usual for the ladies as you'd expect anywhere there's a show. We had a whole row to ourselves so could spread our legs out but if we'd been limited to our seats, the legroom would have been a little uncomfortable for us. We were in the upper circle in the lower numbers. We had an ok view though many parts were on the right side of the stage, which we couldn't see because of the boxes, so thankfully, they videoed it and it was up on two large screens above the actors. Some people did move further back as their seats were on the front row of the upper circle which had a safety bar in front of them which obstructed their view.
R P — Google review
Just been to watch the friends musical and I adored it. The musical itself was amazing and I had no issues with the theatre at all. One thing that isn’t the greatest is the prices of food and drink but that’s a usual with things now so it didn’t bother us. The seats were amazing in the upper circle and it wasn’t even expensive to sit where we did. £15 each for our seats for that show. The staff were amazing as I lost my phone and they managed to phone my parents through my medical id on my phone and kept it until I found it. My program booklet got ruined from someone’s drink and the woman happily gave me a fresh one after I showed her and I was over the moon. The program was £4 but I wasn’t bothered. Highly recommend here as I haven’t been in years and wasn’t let down at all.
Lily W — Google review
What can I say. What a breath of Magic from Start to Finish. we were swept away into Berts Chalk pictures on a wild and breezy adventure. What a performance. First time we have been to the Empire theatre. We will most certainly be back.
Christopher M — Google review
It's a classic 'theatre' comfy seats, small and intimate. The interval 'sustenance' app is a great idea, and worked well for some folk around us. My techno-incompetence meant I couldn't load and master it, and because everyone else was using it, there was no queue for the (very expensive) ices. Also some folks interval snacks arrived 10 minutes into the second half. We to see Hamilton with our daughter and granddaughter's who know the show well. It was a great performance lots of energy and engagement. All in all a great night out. Another possible negative the bag check was perfunctory. The theatre emptied at the end of the show in under 10 minutes, and we were in the front of the stalls. Lengthy queue for the merchandise, but that's not why we went!
Conrad C — Google review
What a beautiful theatre with a very spooky history. An excellent place to see Inside No. 9 Live which was fantastic. Parking is very convenient at the local shopping centre although the lack of pay stations caused a massive hold-up before getting away. (Not the theatre's fault!).

St Peter's Church, located in the heart of Sunderland, is a historic site with roots dating back to the 7th century. Founded by St Benedict Biscop and later associated with the Venerable Bede, it stands as one of the UK's first stone churches. The church boasts intricate stonework and historical artifacts, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich past.
A lovely and hospitable greeting from George, Denise and Ann the Warden when I visited on Wednesday 27/11/2024. Ann even showed me the Templar graves in the Tower section of this amazing 7th century time capsule. Beautiful and inspiring! Thank you all and God bless! Archbishop Revd. Robert E. Wells

Wow what a hidden gem to visit on my visit with family in Sunderland. Highly recommend a visit, so much history going back to Saxon times. They have guides in the church, who have grown up in the area with some amazing memories and history about St Peter's church since 674. The cafe is worth a visit too, good value for money. Open Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 10.30 am.
Dee T — Google review
I was born in Sunderland and knew very little of the history in St Peter's church. I was treated to a personal tour by Eddie, a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic historian, who volunteers at the church. Very beautiful and interesting to visit. There is also a café which uses food grown in their own garden

Absolutely amazing church. I felt the energy and Holy Spirit there.

Take a pleasant tour of what is possibly the oldest church in England AD674. The venerable Bede trained there as an eight year old. It contains a very detailed and ornate glass window. See photo. The closer you look the more details you can see. The church also has a nice cafe with very cheap prices. All within 5 minutes walk from the National Glass Centre, so could be a combined visit.
Michael W — Google review
Allegedly open until 1500 was kicked out at 1430. Staff had a couldn't care less attitude which I find the usual course in Sunderland. I presume they just wanted to get home and be paid for it. Again a Sunderland trait. I shan't be visiting again and would not advise anybody else to do so.

7th century church. Amazing and beautiful building along a vast yard makes the place perfect for a rest with the family. There is a parking lot at the gates of the church yard.
Vladislav G — Google review
Although the body of the church, founded in the second half of the 7th century by Benedict Biscop and in which the manuscript now known as the Codex Amiatinus was made, has been changed in later centuries, the tower and western archway are just as they were when the Venerable Bede would have been a regular visitor to study in the monastic library around the year 700AD.

The Ryhope Engines Museum, located in the Ryhope suburb of Sunderland, is housed in a Grade II-listed building that was once the operational Ryhope Pumping Station. This Victorian-era water-pumping station operated for over 100 years before being transformed into a museum. The museum showcases two impressive 100-horsepower beam engines from the Victorian era, which are still fully functional and regularly demonstrated to exhibit their power and scale.
Ryhope Engines Museum is a must-visit destination. Visitors are treated to an exceptional combination of Victorian architecture and engineering. I recommend visiting on a 'steaming day' to see the mighty pumps in operation - check the museum website for opening info. The museum is operated and maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers who do an outstanding job. There is free parking available, along with a tea room and comfort facilities. All this, and it's free!

A fantastic little museum, check the website to see when it's running on steam otherwise it's open as a static display. When running, the engine is smooth and quiet, look out for the £1 coin balanced on the beam. There are 3 levels to explore and you can see it all nice and close. It's run by enthusiastic volunteers who are happy to share information on it. There is a guide book available. It's free but donations are welcome to keep it running. There is a blacksmith shop selling a few items and a cafe at the entrance. Parking available onsite. There are a few steps to get up to the top of the engine and a few at the entrance.

Wonderful place, great planes to see, lovely informative friendly people, my nephew and niece, 4 and 1 loved it! The Sea King helicopter arriving for the first time was a unique experience, and the weather was the icing on the cake! Loved it, can't recommend it highly enough! Thank You Graham Giles

We enjoyed this so much we came back again and were not disappointed. Some incredibly friendly, helpful and kind volunteers made this a particular highlight of the holiday. A large number of exhibits well arranged to make maximum use of the space. There are some vehicles that you can sit in and enjoy a photo. Some particularly notable aircraft are the Vulcan bomber, the Tornado, the Hawk, the Harrier and the Seaking helicopter. You really can't appreciate how awesome these are until you're up close and personal.

Excellent Museum for the enthusiast you could spend a fair amount if time here. We came with two kids aged 9/12 . They loved it as there are a fair few exhibits you can climb aboard , trams, planes , jeeps. It had a small shop with creams , soft drinks and sweets and you can get a cup of tea or coffee. Picnic tables outside so you could bring a picnic. There is a very small play area for young children. Definitely recommend this and look out for the special event days . Parking available but fairly small car park.

An interesting museum with a wide selection of planes, army trucks, cars, boats and WW2 apparel. Nice to have a look around, we spent about an hour there. There are drinks available but no food, and there is also a small shop.

Such a great value day out! The volunteers are knowledgeable and friendly. My dad manufactured aircraft parts before he retired including several on the aircraft here (Vulcan, Harrier, Tornado and Hawk to name a few) and the staff spent lots of time talking to him. They went out of their way to give him a really special experience listening to his knowledge and talking about his career as well as him being able to see some of the parts he made up close in situ on these incredible machines. To be able to share what was such a memorable part of his life with myself and his grandchildren, as well as the extra mile the volunteers went to make the day a once in a lifetime event for him meant the world to us all and we can't extend enough thanks for the kindness and respect shown.

Shopping
The Bridges Shopping Centre is a modern glass-fronted mall in Sunderland, offering a vibrant mix of high street fashion and lifestyle shops, as well as a department store and cafes. Situated near the picturesque Mowbray Park and overlooking the River Wear, the center is part of Sunderland's urban transformation. The shopping center hosts numerous events throughout the year, catering to families with activities like treasure hunts, storytelling sessions, and themed crafts.
I love the Bridges Shopping centre full of natural light and airy, for me I like it more than Eldon Square and the Metro 🚇 Centre. The Bridges has a variety of shops and is also undercover. However, if it looked more like Sunderland Museum/Winter gardens with plants and trees and a water feature it would be a more favourable and a nicer environment to shop. I remember there was a water feature at Brent cross ❌ shopping centre and Whiteleys Bayswater London. For me it made a difference as a nicer shopping experience. There is also an indoor market which there is few and far between now.

We came on on Sunday 19/10/25 to visit The Entertainer shop specifically as wanted to get winnie the pooh characters . Did not have or not before Christmas. A big clean shopping centre. Had a few independent shops and bother shops like primark, lush... Disabled/ wheelchair friendly I took pictures of some kids toys in The Entertainer Parking states £1 per hour. We were in the shopping centre for 35 minutes. We were charged £3

A good range of shops, Jackie Whites Market is a favourite of mine. The fruit and veg stall is highly popular. Such good prices plus they sell crisps at amazing prices. Plus some other Asian foods. Plus some household products. The butcher has high welfare meats. Looks of other quirky and unique stalls. The Bridges have some independent stalls which are also interesting. So good for a rainy day. They usually have some activities for kids as well.

Jackie White Market is one of the most positive aspects of the Bridges Shopping Centre. Although the Bridges is an immaculately clean and inviting shopping Mall. There are some great shops in here too. Next time I'm in I'll see if we can grab some more photos. Meanwhile see if you can spot Paddington Bear having a short sit down. Waiting for someone to come and share their marmalade sandwiches with him..

As much as I like going 2 the Sunderland bridges when ever I like unfortunately they are still not a dog friendly place 2 go 2 even just 2 walk throw 2 get 2 the other side of the city if they not brake that rule but bent it a bit so that all dog's can go it would help more business that are struggling 2 stay open & profiteer of it later on dring these hard times. But on the ➕️ side nice shop's nice people I hope that however is in charge of the bridges in Sunderland would consider doing a trial run of allowing pet dog in some day.

This mall is perfect for the people living in its area... it has everything the people would need from shopping for clothes, gifts, groceries, holiday, health care such as vitamins plasters or bandages.... and travel insurance for holidays.... there is also a currency exchange quite a few of them and a great space for the public to catch up... have a cup of tea or coffee and cakes and treats .... there is a fresh produce area and market attached to the mall and it has a great selection of smoothies and milkshakes.... what a fantastic mall for the people of the area.

I was a little unsure how this would work as an outside venue, but it really did work and the sound quality was fantastic. Hopefully more band i enjoy will be on there soon.

This venue is unreal!!! Went to see Terrorvision supported by Pet Needs and the sound was amazing, set up was amazing, bands were amazing, all of it was amazing!! The security guys were great, not only do they do their job perfectly they join in and have good banter with everyone, they made my night - shout out to the supervisor that night and his bearded friend (sorry already forgotten names) you guys are awesome.

Had a great night here watching Country Roads. Staff very helpful and drinks not a bad price. Buy a bottle of you're buying more than one glass of wine as it works out cheaper. You get to take the wine into the auditorium in a plastic verse which is really great

A security guard and a lady who worked the bar was so lovely and supportive. Made me smile. The venue itself is impressive and love the history. Toilets were clean and well maintained. Roker Pier and lighthouse, constructed between 1883 and 1903, stand as a popular landmark in Sunderland. The pier features an underground tunnel designed to aid servicemen during inclement weather. Notably, the area is also home to the wreckage of a German U Boat that sank in 1917. Originally built during Sunderland's prominence as a British port, the pier and lighthouse underwent extensive restoration starting in 2012.

Roker Pier is one of Sunderland’s most iconic landmarks, blending historic engineering with breathtaking coastal views. A walk along the pier has long been a favorite for locals and visitors—whether for spotting dolphins and seals, enjoying the bracing sea air, or soaking up the wide views along the coast. The Roker Pier & Lighthouse Tours are particularly special, offering access through the tunnel beneath the pier and into the lighthouse itself. The surrounding Roker seafront is clean, pet-friendly, and lined with cafés and restaurants, making it ideal for families, dog walkers, and casual strollers alike.

Roker Pier and Lighthouse Tours offer a delightful journey through history and stunning coastal views. Constructed between 1885 and 1903, this engineering marvel by Henry Hay Wake stands as a testament to Sunderland's rich maritime heritage. After undergoing significant restoration funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2012, visitors can now explore its fascinating past, including its role during World War II. The tour begins with a brief safety introduction before embarking on an enjoyable walk along the picturesque pier.
Wow. We had a private tour of four with two volunteers walking us through the tunnel into and up the light house. Amazing views and so interesting learning the history of why the pier was needed and how it was built. A completely different perspective of a popular beach walk. Would highly recommend. Volunteer's were full of knowledge preserving a lot of local history. I can imagine this being good for children although i believe they need to be a minimum of 10 years old.

There is a 15min introduction regarding safety and a brief overview of the tour. There are steep steps in places, as one would expect. Excellent information on the history of the lighthouse and how it was built. Including its use over the years ie during the second World War. Adequate time to ask questions. The team of volunteers were fabulous. Thank you for a great experience detailing the lighthouse history. You have to have a level of fitness to negotiate the steep stairs. Well worth a visit. Whole visit lasted almost 2 hrs (usually 1.5hrs). Small group of 8 people, which was appropriate.

A great family-run pub in a beautiful building. It's probably my favourite pub in Sunderland. The atmosphere is always welcoming. There's usually live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Visited with my Brother and Boyfriend. On my Boyfriend's recommendation. Such a wonderful, fascinating pub with a lot of original and historical features which was fascinating. It's small but perfectly formed (a bit like myself haha) the staff are super friendly and chatty. Very quick and professional service. Good choice of ales and other drinks. Fantastic for pre theatre drinks as it's only a few steps away from the Sunderland Empire. It can get quite busy but you don't wait long. Prices are very reasonable. Been visiting The Dunnie (Australian readers; it's not) for years on and off. I used to look forward to a pint of Cameron's Strong Arm, and that's why i knocked a star off the rating - i couldn't have one today. Loads of craft ales to choose from and a decent pint was enjoyed. Good craic from the bar team as well.

Canny disappointed with this place. Came highly recommended and to be fair it did have a fair selection of beers and ales. The disappointment came with the atmosphere ... There was none. Unlike other pubs we went in in Sunderland there was no friendliness or welcoming vibe. Just served and sat down. It was fairly busy but just had a bit of a pretentious feel to me, maybe I am judging harshly as other places were really friendly but this is how both my wife and I felt during and after our visit. Wouldn't rush back here.

On a rubbish August evening of damp grey skies this lit up the evening. Great selection of real ale. Casta chose an " off the wall" beer...a blue raspberry and coconut milkshake pale ale! I've used this Chinese takeaway for many years, but for some reason, I've never left a review. The food here is very very good indeed, and there's nowhere in town that does it better in my view. Recently ordered a large takeaway when friends came to visit. They were really impressed at the quality. Salt and Pepper crispy squid was a real winner!

Special curry was quite hot and had a flavour of Indian heat/spices. No char su pork in it, also, rice tasted more pillau than egg fried rice. Chips not cooked the Chinese way...
Gregory D — Google review
Lovely food and staff, explains where the nearest cash point was and cooked my food while I was getting cash so I didn't have to wait too long for it. I ordered egg fried rice, curry sauce and mini vegetarian spring rolls. My only complaint is that the curry sauce was a little too thick. You also only get six spring rolls but they're more like a medium spring roll anyway, so so long as you don't eat them in the car without looking at them you won't be momenterally disappointed like I was. 100% would go again.

Friendly staff but food wasn't good I'm afraid. Mushrooms in gravy was far too thick and oily, the rice was cold and the spare ribs were dry. Never again! The Welcome Inn up the rode is 100% better but was closed on that day and we really fancied chinese.... we wished we never bothered.

Nestled in the picturesque countryside, the National Trust's Penshaw Monument stands as a striking 21-meter-high Victorian folly that pays homage to ancient Greek architecture. This impressive structure, also known as the Earl of Durham's Monument, offers breathtaking panoramic views of Sunderland and beyond. Easily spotted from various points in the city and even along major roads like the A1058 Coast Road, it beckons visitors to explore its heights.
Nearly killed me walking up those steps... Don't remember them being as steep... Ain't been in a few years though. The views are stunning once at the top and the monument is standing the test of time. It's always bustling with people, parking is available in Herrington park however, that also gets very busy so you may drive around a while. Those with disabilities may struggle and it's certainly not wheelchair accessible.

A beautiful and atmospheric place with stunning views over the surrounding area. The monument is very impressive up close, and the walk up the hill is enjoyable and surrounded by nature. It is a great spot for a family trip or a peaceful walk, with panoramic views of Sunderland and beyond, especially at sunset. There are no queues or entrance fees, which is another advantage. Comfortable shoes are recommended, as the climb is quite steep, but it is definitely worth the effort. I would highly recommend a visit.

You need to be fit to reach the top. The views were amazing, but more amazing was the amount of rubbish. A young couple had each collected an armful of empty plastic bottles but there were plenty more. I can understand the National Trust not supplying bins ( as they would need emptying). People should be ashamed.

Beautiful climb up to the top with stunning views across the north east and its coastline. The 100+ steps up are exhausting but definitely well worth it 😍

What a lovely walk around Penshaw Monument. Behind there is some steps, and it takes you down into the woods, beautiful walk. If you keep walking it’ll take you all the way down to the river. Definitely a great walk.

Sunderland Marina has undergone significant changes in the past decade, with the historic waterfront dating back to the 1830s being extended to accommodate visitors. The area now includes attractions like The Grey Goose, a popular spot known for its delightful Moka and fresh crab sandwiches. It's recommended to visit early due to its popularity. The marina offers plenty of picturesque spots for walks, whether during the day or at night, and is especially beautiful for capturing sunrise and sunset moments.
If the weather is decent then this place is a great location for a walk. Beautiful and clean with good seating area.

Plenty of things to see and photograph. Perfect for a walk anytime of day or night with or without a dog. Lovely setting for Sunrise and Sunset pictures. People very friendly and chatty. Best to wrap up warm in winter.

Small but lovely to walk round and view the boats there, noticed a couple of places to eat. Some door sculptures to look at too.
Karen D — Google review
Sunderland Marina is a hidden local attraction that's well worth a visit. The walk around the marina has many interesting sculptures to discover and marvel at. There's a wide and open marina promenade that's suitable for wheelchairs, buggies and bikes. Many colourful little boats are moored here and it's a nice place to sit and watch the world go by. It's possible to buy coffee or snacks from the Snow Goose cafe or walk a little further round the bay to the Roker Riviera where there is a wider choice of eateries including the popular Fausto's and Love Lily coffee shops and, of course, the beach.

The Anglican church Sunderland Minster is a beautiful and impressive place to visit. The Town Park and Sunderland Minster is getting a 1.9m make-over, which will be very interesting to see. The church has a strong focus on COVID19 prevention, and communion wafers are delivered to your side plate! Coffee and tea are served afterwards.
Had a wonderful night in a beautiful building. Beautiful homemade food from Ukrainian friends.

The Minster Church of St Michael and All Angels and St Benedict Biscop (commonly known as Sunderland Minster) is the minster church of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. Formerly known as "St Michael & All Angels' Church", it served as the parish church for Bishopwearmouth, but was renamed in January 1998 after Sunderland was granted city status. In May 2007 the Minster ceased to be the parish church of Bishopwearmouth and village is now a suburb of Sunderland. Sunderland Minster is part of the Greater Churches Group.

This church is a very special one due to its community of people that attend it. The Sunday service is always a time where you can feel the peace and the positive energy that is transmitted through the minsters and shared with the group. After the service there is a social time, where people share a hot drink and prepare for the informal service, where mostly people from international communities attend and experience the service in a different way and have the chance to discuss the scripture as well. Furthermore, there are a lot of events happening in the church, such as fairs, music concerts, support events for refugees and asylum seekers, so I highly reccomend this place.

University
Nestled in the vibrant city of Sunderland, the University of Sunderland has a rich history that dates back to its inception as a technical college in the early 20th century. Achieving university status in 1992, it boasts two main campuses: the Sir Tom Cowie Campus located along the picturesque River Wear and the City Campus on Chester Road. The latter features notable buildings such as the Darwin Building and Murray Library, alongside six halls of residence, with Clanny House being the largest.
I live next to the Sir Tom Cowie campus which offers mainly television, media and IT studies. Some famous Media personalities were once taught here. It's quite famous for the quality of degrees it offers.
William M — Google review
An incredibly poor experience from start to finish, the lack of quality was even clearer after attending different universities for post-grad. Expect poor teaching with even poorer attitudes from some staff and incredibly subjective marking. Course content and lectures in general were not valuable. I could not recommend. In response to your copy paste replies, I have no doubt you would look into any concerns anyway. Look at the wealth of poor reviews with recurring themes. Absolutely unfit to educate. A waste of time and funds.
C — Google review
Urgent refund request… I received a conditional offer from the University of Sunderland (main campus) in May 2025, with the only condition being to pay a £5,750 deposit. After confirming seat availability through their official representative in Bangladesh, I paid the deposit on June 20. Just five days later, I received an email stating that the program had been closed and my offer had been withdrawn due to a high volume of applications. The university promised a refund within 6 weeks — but that never happened. Despite multiple emails to the International Office, Student Casework, Finance, and even involving my aunt (who is in the UK and paid the deposit), no one has properly responded. On August 11 — 7 weeks after my application was withdrawn — I was told that my refund was now approved and I should wait another 6 weeks. So the timeline basically restarted. It’s now almost 10 weeks since the withdrawal, and I’ve received no refund, no proper communication, and no resolution. Because of this delay, I missed the Fall 2025 intake despite having an offer from other universities. This has caused severe stress and financial problems. I’m deeply frustrated and request the University of Sunderland to process my refund immediately and respond to my complaints. This situation is unacceptable for any student, especially international ones.
Mazharul O — Google review
Awful experience with this university, lecturer don’t listen and rarely do their job. The amount they push for attendance is only because Covid proved you don’t have to be on campus to learn

I have not been to the UK before neither have I been to Sunderland before but the amazing and wonderful Admission Team from the University of Sunderland that I met in Nigeria on Wednesday during Get Ahead Seminar in Abuja, infact, I can't wait to join you guys soon. The team were so amazing and friendly. Above all the explained the admission and immigration process to a very understandable level. No question sounds useless to them, the answer all questions till you understand and they also give room to one on one counseling/question and answer section. You guys are great. I wish other Universities in the UK can learn from you. See you soon 🔜🔜🔜

STAY AWAY FROM IT I enrolled for a LLM, couldn’t take part because of technical problem with canvas, the it system. I have tried to contact student success team many times per email and phone. No one answered. I withdraw from the LLM request a refund, weeks have pass, no answer

Poor handling of admission from their Pakistan regional office, the staff is ill trained to handle cases. They have no clue how to talk to someone coming and paying for their services. Altogether they wasted 3 months of my time and the staff is not courteous at all. Poor case handling by immigration (CAS) department. I would not recommend this uni to anyone, and definitely not to someone who is returning to studies after a long gap.

I started attending services regularly some years ago and have been welcomed as part of the family. The services are generally quite traditional, but the sermons are fresh and relevant. There is a genuine desire to serve *all* God's people without expectation of anything in return, borne out in Space4 Community Drop-in Centre based in the library on Newbottle Street, which is also well worth a visit. For those with a historical interest there is plenty of information as you walk around the building. There is in fact plenty of history as this spot has been a place of worship since before Christianity came to these Isles! Parts of the building date back to Medieval times, and a glass section in the floor reveals some archaeological excavations from 2008. Additionally, Houghton was the parish of Bernard Gilpin, "Apostle of the North", who is featured in one of the windows in Durham Cathedral, and the Church houses his tomb. Do look him up on Wikipedia or similar.

Fulwell Mill, a striking feature of the Sunderland skyline since its construction in 1808, stands as the only operational windmill in North East England. Crafted from local magnesium limestone, this historic landmark has undergone meticulous restoration and now boasts a visitor center that offers insights into its fascinating 19th-century mechanics. While public access is limited at present, anticipation builds for future openings where visitors can explore its rich history firsthand.
Although the cafe isn't open, we had a tour round the mill and it's history. Quite a number of steep steps to go to the top, no good with anyone with mobility problems or small children. As you have to ascend backwards. Really interesting 😃

Great atmosphere and an absolutely fantastic building, renovated to an exceptionally high standard. Now converted into a communal space and hosting a jazz club at my visit. The sound quality could be better. That is my only criticism. This place is a must visit and worthy of patronage. There seems to be a good selection of jazz gigs coming up not to mention Shakespeare. I'd recommend a visit.

🕯️ Candlelight: Vivaldi's Four Seasons, by Northern String Quartet. Many will have seen adverts recently about this 1 hour show in our region. Advice: GET TICKETS! We went (13/10/23) to see this show at Trinity Church, Sunderland. It was entirely lit with over 3,000 candles as a backdrop, to listen to these highly skilled musicians, who play throughout the UK and internationally .
