The Breakers is a grand summer home built by Cornelius Vanderbilt and his wife during the Gilded Age in Newport, Rhode Island. Designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, this 70-room 'cottage' served as a showpiece for the Vanderbilts. The mansion boasts ornate artwork, gardens, and guided tours that showcase its overwhelming grandeur and fine decorative details. As a National Historic monument, it offers visitors an audio guide to explore its history and daily operations.
Visited June 2025 | Spent ~3.5 hours The Breakers is a breathtaking mansion and a true masterpiece of the Gilded Age. We spent about 3 to 4 hours here, and every minute was worth it. The audio tour was incredibly informative and easy to follow, blending history with personal stories that brought the Vanderbilt legacy to life. The architecture is grand and luxurious, with intricate details in every room—from marble fireplaces and gilded ceilings to hand-painted murals and imported furnishings. The Grand Hall is just jaw-dropping! The ocean views from the rear lawn are stunning, and you can imagine the opulent parties that must’ve taken place here. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and there are plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the ocean breeze. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the whole experience felt well-organized and peaceful despite a moderate crowd. Pro tips: • Definitely get the audio guide—it enhances the experience immensely. • Wear comfortable shoes as there’s quite a bit of walking (both indoors and outdoors). • Allow at least 2.5–4 hours if you want to explore at a relaxed pace and soak it all in. • Photography is allowed indoors (no flash), and there are so many photo-worthy spots. Would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Newport—whether you’re into history, architecture, or just want to enjoy a beautiful day by the sea.
Anish S — Google review
An impressive summer mansion with beautiful surroundings. The interiors are grand, but what I enjoyed most was the area around it. You can walk around, explore, and even do a small hike along the shore near the property. A lovely spot to experience both history and scenic views.
Jishnu N — Google review
The Breakers is a jaw-dropping blend of Gilded Age opulence and ocean-spray drama, where every room feels like a scene change in a grand opera. The craftsmanship—marble, gilding, carved wood, and soaring ceilings—is so meticulous you find new details each time you look. The self-guided audio tour is outstanding: clear, engaging, and rich with stories that bring the Vanderbilt world to life. Strolling the grounds with the Atlantic as a backdrop adds a cinematic finish that photos never quite capture. If you visit Newport, this is the one landmark that absolutely earns the time, the ticket, and the superlatives.

The Breakers – A Dream for Gilded Age Fans For anyone who loves the Gilded Age or is fascinated by that era’s elegance and grandeur, The Breakers is an absolute must-see. The moment you walk through the gates, you feel like you’ve stepped straight into another world — one filled with history, beauty, and unapologetic luxury. Everything here is so well-organized: from the thoughtful visitor flow to the detailed explanations and perfectly preserved interiors. The house itself is simply magnificent — every room tells a story. The grand staircase takes your breath away, the ocean-view terrace is pure magic, and the bedrooms are both opulent and full of charm. And oh, the kitchen! It’s enormous, full of fascinating details, and somehow feels alive, as if it’s still ready to host a grand dinner for the Vanderbilt family. You can spend hours here, admiring the craftsmanship, imagining the parties, and feeling the spirit of the age. The views of the Atlantic are spectacular, and the whole place carries this wonderful mix of nostalgia and splendor. If you’re even a little curious about the Gilded Age, make sure to plan a visit — it’s an unforgettable experience that truly brings history to life.

Gorgeous mansion for visiting! We bought the tickets online before the visit, arrived late but they allowed us to get in anyway. Remember to download the app per the instructions posted there and bring your own headphones/earbuds so that you can listen to the descriptions and interesting stories as you step into each room. I was mesmerized by the decorative details. The place is perfect for visiting in the fall when the weather is cooler. You could sit in the back yard enjoying the vast sky and sea and grass field. It was a delightful experience!
Nhan T — Google review
Be sure you bring your headphones and get the Newport Mansions app so you can listen to the tour while you visit. This mansion is an awesome place to visit and learn some of the history of some of the Rockefeller family during the gilded age. The craftsmanship is spectacular and a bit over the top, but it really is an amazing place to witness. Highly recommend a visit!! As an added note, we visited during a day in port off the cruise ship. It's definitely an easy self guided excursion you can do, just a couple miles of the port. We saved a lot of money, saw multiple properties, did the tour on our own timeframe. It's an easy Uber ride or a nice walk to the property from the ship!
Joe B — Google review
Went on a Sunday at 9am, walked from the port from my cruise, really enjoyed the walk. The Breakers was beautiful in October. Nice cool breeze from the ocean outside. The Breakers showed a lot of rooms on display. The gift shop had a little bit for everyone with decent prices as well. Took me about two hours by myself to walk through the self guided audio tour, visit the shop, and walk around outside. I did not try the cafe. There was one restroom by the front ticketing area.

Hands down the most beautiful Mansion in Newport. Inside and out it is truly stunning!! 🤩 You must visit it if you’re in Newport. Would recommend becoming a member of the preservation society for easier and cheaper access to all the Mansions in Newport.

Fort Adams State Park is a historic site located in a strategic position overlooking Narragansett Bay. It served as a coastal defense system from pre-Revolutionary War times up to World War II. The park offers guided tours of the fort's interior, underground tunnels, and scenic overlook posts with stunning 360-degree views of Aquidneck Island and Narragansett Bay. Additionally, it hosts the renowned Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals during the summer months.
We had a beautiful family picnic at Fort Adams State Park and absolutely loved it! The open green space was perfect for the kids to run around and fly kites, and the ocean views made the whole experience feel so peaceful and refreshing. It’s a great mix of natural beauty and open space, and everything felt clean and safe. The fresh air, calm surroundings, and family-friendly vibe made it a memorable outing. Parking was easy, and the walking paths are well-maintained. Definitely a must, visit if you’re in Newport!
Malika H — Google review
Really enjoyed the coastal breeze around the fort. Entry to the fort is $16/adult if you prefer a self guided tour. You can use the brochure they give you and can also download the app to get significant historical info about the fort. As a history buff myself, I thoroughly enjoyed this experience visiting the fort. Enjoyed walking in the tunnels and a lot of room for imagining those military scenes of soldiers fighting to defend the fort.
Sai P — Google review
Fort Adams State Park is a perfect blend of sweeping coastal views and rich American history. The massive granite fort is fascinating to tour, and the surrounding lawns are ideal for picnics, kite flying, and lazy afternoons by the water. You get postcard-worthy vistas of Newport Harbor, sailboats gliding by, and unforgettable sunsets. Parking is easy, restrooms are clean, and there’s plenty of space to spread out—even on busy weekends. Whether you’re here for a quiet stroll, a family day, or one of the big music festivals, this park delivers every time.

Take the private golf cart tour. Mike was our tour guide & did a terrific job. The fort & surrounding area has a very unique history. It was a great way to start our vacation. 🪖🇺🇸

Take the guided tour! Wow. We took the 330pm tour and had Tony as our tour guide. It was so worth it. Tony was funny, knowledgeable, engaging, and entertaining! My son and I lead ghost tours in the OBX and we love taking tours when we travel. Tony was by far one of the best guides we have had. The guided tour was great cause you get to go into the buildings, up on the casements and Into the tunnels!!! And you get all the history and insider knowledge. 15/10 recommend.
Stephanie H — Google review
You can feel the history here. The revolution! I've been inside the fort on Halloween and you can imagine firing cannons at British ships. This Memorial Day, to honor our troops, they had boots on the ground for fallen soldiers. Very moving! The wall of the fort has been off limits for years but was open this day and was even better than down below, in the tunnels. This is also the home of the Newport Jazz and Folk festival every summer which I highly recommend!
Patrick — Google review
Fort Adams is a great place to spend a few hours connecting with history and nature. There is a large walking area, great views, tours, and other stunning sights. They just had a sobering display of Boots on the Ground for Memorial Day.

Touro Synagogue National Historic Site, built in 1763, is the oldest synagogue building still standing in the United States. It was designed by Peter Harrison and features a two-story Palladian style. The synagogue has a rich history, with George Washington writing a famous letter to the congregation pledging religious freedom. The interior boasts twelve Ionic columns representing the twelve tribes of ancient Israel.
Touro Synagogue is an awesome place to visit! I went in for the tour and the history here is really awesome! The tour guide was very knowledgeable. It was an awesome fact to learn that both Dwight Eisenhower and John Kennedy visited this synagogue. There is a small fee of $14 for the tour but it is well worth it!
George F — Google review
This is a really nice synagogue and museum. We loved learning more about Rhode Island's rich history of religious freedom. The tour guide was knowledgeable and thorough.
Ashley B — Google review
The synagogue is magnificent, and its history is so deep. The presenter guide was very knowledgeable, as he has been a member of the community his entire life. The museum down the street was also very informative even though they were not run by the same organization, which is a shame.
Jayne S — Google review
Absolutely wonderful! The history talk and walking tour were top notch. The synagogue isn’t open for tours as the congregation hashes out some legal battle, but it is still worth the trip!
Rachel P — Google review
The tourguide was fantastic; explaining the shul and it's history in great detail, making the experience very interesting. It was a real eye opener on jewish history. Definitely worth a visit!
Aliza G — Google review
I've known about Touro Synagogue for years, but this is the first chance I've had to visit. It did not disappoint. The sanctuary is beautiful, and the docents provide a fascinating overview of the history of Jews in Newport. The visitor center has some interesting exhibits, and you can walk up the street to look in at the old Jewish cemetery. Be sure to check the schedule because you can only tour with a docent.
Heidi S — Google review
The Touro synagogue is the oldest in the United States and has been visited by people such as George Washington. We met the Rabbi and he brought us into the temple to speak about the history of this synagogue. Interesting story and history of this place. There are no tickets require to enter, but you must signup online to reserve your time.
Andrew — Google review
Touro Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in the United States, is a living testament to both history and continuity. Its storied past is beautifully curated, and the presence of an ancient Torah scroll on display adds a profound layer to the experience. Remarkably, this historical landmark remains a vibrant center of worship, hosting active services that connect the past with the present. Touro's enduring legacy, coupled with its commitment to spiritual vitality, makes it an exceptional destination deserving of a resolute five-star rating.

Marble House, a stunning Beaux-Arts-style mansion, was originally the summer residence of the Vanderbilt family and is now open to the public as a museum. Designed by Richard Morris Hunt in 1892, it was a birthday gift from William K. Vanderbilt to his wife Alva. The opulent interior features intricate details such as ceiling murals, chandeliers, carved woodwork, and a grand staircase.
The Marble House is breathtaking. The design and craftsmanship are unreal. You must do the audio tour because it brings the entire experience to life with fascinating stories and history. Every room was more impressive than the last. A true masterpiece in Newport. Definitely worth every minute.
Ted P — Google review
I visited Marble House right after touring The Breakers, and I have to admit that it was a bit overwhelming to take in two such incredible mansions in one day. However, Marble House is absolutely worth seeing on its own, as the interiors are stunning. One of my favorite parts of the visit was the Chinese Tea House on the grounds, which serves as a café. It’s a perfect spot to relax with tea or a snack after exploring the mansion. If you’re visiting Newport, I highly recommend including Marble House in your itinerary. It pairs nicely with The Breakers, while also featuring its own unique character and charm that make it stand out.
Olga N — Google review
Marble House – Newport, RI Visiting Marble House was an absolutely amazing experience! The mansion is breathtaking inside and out — a true glimpse into the Gilded Age with its stunning architecture, opulent interiors, and rich history. My husband and I really enjoyed walking through each room, taking in the detail, and imagining what life must have been like during that era. The grounds are just as beautiful, with peaceful spots to sit and admire the view. The tour was well-organized, informative, and allowed us to move at our own pace, which made the experience even more enjoyable. It’s definitely a must-see when in Newport, and we left feeling like we’d stepped back in time. Highly recommend to anyone who appreciates history, design, and a truly unique cultural experience.
Stacey H — Google review
Exploring Marble House in Newport feels like entering a storybook from a previous era. The glittering marble, the intricate design work, and the majestic halls all speak of an era defined by opulence and ambition. Inspired by the grand palaces of Europe, yet rooted in its own American history, the mansion tells the tale of a family whose wealth and vision helped shape Newport’s legacy. Beyond the lavish interiors, the grounds themselves are a treasure—beautifully landscaped, spacious, and inviting for a leisurely stroll. I only wish I had more time to wander both inside and outside, soaking in the beauty and atmosphere of this remarkable place.
Natalia M — Google review
Lovely stop. Walking through this beautiful house was breathtaking and eye opening. Lots to see and enjoy. Marble tubs for both salt and fresh water is a over the top crazy indulgence in life. Happy to see they also did good in the World with their money and not just have everything to them selves. Enjoy the tour but hope you enjoy what you have too and not envy all their riches.

The mansion is remarkable. The size and decoration is superb. I can feel related to history as this mansion reminded me of the movie ‘downtown abbey’ - if you visit the area, I would recommend to go and spend some time there.

The International Tennis Hall of Fame, located in Newport, is a must-visit for tennis fans and history enthusiasts alike. It's the birthplace of the U.S. championship tennis and offers an array of attractions including interactive exhibits, a holographic theater featuring stars like Roger Federer, displays of iconic tennis attire, video highlights of historic matches, and even Queen Victoria's 1874 patent for lawn tennis.
The new renovated experience was wonderful (priced well for tickets). For those who ask can we play on grass? The answer is Yes, $250 an hour and must be dressed in white tennis gear. I respect the price and formality, however it would also be neat to have a general experience (adults and kids) set up without all the formality -- come as you are with a few hits. Do like that you can in the general area without paying. Well done!
Zach G — Google review
Real Tennis World in Newport — one visit is never enough! Everything about this place is amazing. It’s such a grand and historic spot that makes you feel like you’re traveling back in time. The staff at the museum are the sweetest, especially Liz, who can share so much information about the history of tennis. It was an unforgettable experience that I will always cherish.
Mariam M — Google review
Museum was very nice. Presentation of archived equipment and autographed clothes and racquets was nicely done. Even the arrangement of topics and themes was very good. Video selection at the end of the tour was plentiful and highly interesting to watch. Tennis afficionados will spend a good amount of time here enjoying the artifacts, both old and new.
Rudy R — Google review
I enjoyed it and I am not a tennis fan. However... First, beware of parking! There is a large gated pay lot across the street attached to a strip mall of stores. My party stayed 1.5 hours and the parking was $24!!! MAKE sure you go to one of the list of stores in that mall to get your ticket validated or you may suffer the same fate. There is absolutely zero street parking available since the museum is on a busy commercial road. I found the pricing on par with many similar spaces with a few caveats. There was a cash price and a credit price. THEN there was an ADDITIONAL SERVICE FEE regardless of how you paid or if you were a senior or not. What's that for? Tariffs? The young man who took my folding money did not have a clue either. If EVERYONE HAS TO PAY IT, no matter how old you are or how you pay, just include it in the price. This is off-putting and messy. The museum is housed in the old and beautiful Rhode Island Casino. Spectacular is the word that comes to mind. Clean, spacious, and well-curated. There is something for everyone. If you like stats, interactive kiosks, or memorabilia you will find it here. Note that there are 2 gift shops. Everyone on the staff that we spoke to was pleasant and informative. Sorry for the sparse pictures. I did not know that Google was going to ask for a review. I usually do restaurants. Your mileage may vary.
First P — Google review
Great place for tennis enthusiasts to learn the history of the sport throughout the years. People also play court tennis here. They have a cool shop to buy tennis gear and merchandise. The people at the reception are so much fun.
Praharsha E — Google review
The museum is small but it is pretty well maintained. Not a lot of artifacts but it is a good walk through it. It was a rainy day when we visited hence there’s no tennis match nor practice.

This is a must if you are in Newport, even if you are not a tennis fan. The museum and exhibits are great. And the grounds are fun to walk around. Great gift shop as well.

Rough Point is a late-1800s mansion located at the southern end of Bellevue Avenue in Newport. It was formerly owned by heiress Doris Duke, who furnished the 39,000-square-foot English manorial-style house with family treasures, fine art, and antiques from her world travels.
Beautiful estate grounds. The mansion of course is great but it was not that interesting to me. I think coming off the high of the Chateau Versailles made it a bit underwhelming. The history was interesting to learn as I wanted to know more about Doris Duke who I had never heard of previously and was certainly piqued after learning of her association with Duke University.
Matthew H — Google review
This museum house, the former home of millionaires Doris Duke, is a must-see. Although there are bigger more elaborate houses in Newport Rhode Island this one is very special because you may find its rooms are livable. The museum section of the home features a display of Newport made furniture from the 18th century and onward. The area where it sits near the ocean is spectacular. It was the day we were there because of the storm front moving in, and the ocean was very active against the huge ancient rocks.
Bob B — Google review
When you were visiting Newport Rhode Island this is an absolutely incredible spot to include on your itinerary! The English style architecture complimented by the commanding views of the ocean that make this a spot worth stopping by! I was here on a garden tour and was hammered by the outdoor blossoms and look forward to a return visit where I can explore the interiors of the mansion!
Karl G — Google review
We love rough point! It is one of the coolest homes we've seen here in Newport and the life story of Doris Duke is truly something to learn about. It has such a cool mix of historical details but also a 90s feel it's so interesting. The flower garden is also so beautiful during the spring and summer! Don't miss it!
Lauren S — Google review
Lovely home and antiques. Not much to see at this house, but the information about the foundation and the work Doris Duke did/does for Newport is amazing.
Tammy B — Google review
After seeing the Big Four, (Breakers, Elms, Rosecliff and Marble House), we still had time and wanted to see just one more “cottage.” Doris Duke’s Rough Point came up on our search and we are glad it did. Doris Duke’s home was tastefully done. She traveled around the world and was an avid collector. Consequently, every room was filled with hidden gems. Joan, the docent/greeter was fun, interesting and informative. Upstairs, there is a nice collection of furniture and Ms. Duke’s bedroom. There is also a room with a few pieces of her haute couture. The setting is also wonderful with a gorgeous bay view and a bridge. The formal garden definitely needs some loving care, but there are enough flowers to envision what it may have been like in her day.
John B — Google review
An unforgettable visit to Rough Point! What an absolutely stunning and fascinating place. Rough Point is not just another Newport mansion it feels like stepping into a perfectly preserved piece of history, where every room tells a story. The ocean views from the property are breathtaking, and the combination of architecture, art, and landscape is truly mesmerizing. The tour was incredibly well-organized, and the guides were both knowledgeable and passionate. They shared so many interesting details about Doris Duke’s life, her art collection, and her love for the estate, which made the experience even more special. You can feel her presence in every corner of the house from the exquisite furniture to the personal touches that make it feel more like a lived-in home than a museum. The gardens and the surrounding grounds are just as impressive peaceful, beautifully maintained, and perfect for a quiet walk after the tour. It’s also amazing how well they’ve preserved the authenticity of the property without turning it into something overly commercial. If you’re visiting Newport, Rough Point is an absolute must-see. It perfectly captures the elegance, charm, and hidden stories of the Gilded Age, while offering one of the most scenic views along Bellevue Avenue. I left feeling both inspired and relaxed, I can’t wait to return someday!

DON’T MISS this gem. Between the astounding art collection of paintings, tapestries, porcelains, furniture and more, the house and setting is spectacular. My favorite of all the mansions. A must for many reasons, including hearing about Doris’s life, interests and philanthropy. Excellent docents who can answer any question and tell stories. The views and grounds are stunning.

The Elms is a stunning Gilded Age mansion situated on 10 acres of land in Newport. It offers tours of the servants' quarters and Colonial Revival gardens, providing visitors with a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the era. This historic gem was completed in 1901 as a summer retreat for coal magnate Edward Berwin and his wife Herminie, boasting modern amenities that were ahead of their time.
The Elms is truly one of Newport’s shining gems—and my personal favorite mansion. It’s absolutely breathtaking and full of old-world charm. From the moment you arrive, you’re transported back to the Gilded Age, surrounded by elegant French-inspired architecture, grand interiors, and gardens that look like they belong in a fairytale. It’s luxurious but never cold—every room and detail feels thoughtfully and lovingly preserved. You can almost picture the lavish parties and quiet moments that once filled these halls. If you’re exploring Newport, The Elms is a must. It’s simply unforgettable. A heartfelt thank you to the Preservation Society for keeping this jewel so beautifully alive.

The Elms is such a stunning and timeless venue in Newport. I had the opportunity to photograph an engagement session here for one of my couples who is getting married locally, and it was nothing short of magical. The architecture, symmetry, and gardens are absolutely breathtaking—every spot feels like it belongs on the pages of a classic romance novel. From the dramatic staircase to the perfectly manicured grounds, The Elms offers endless opportunities for beautiful, elegant photos. If you’re looking for a venue that combines European charm with Newport grandeur, The Elms is an unforgettable choice. (Sharing a few of my favorite photos here!)

Easily one of our favorite mansions. It is gorgeous inside and out but by far has the most beautiful grounds with beautiful gardens and fountains and sculptures. We enjoyed our time here year after year. We also love the cafe out in back which has really delicious food and ambience. Edit add: The restaurant at Elms review: The Carriage House is one of our favorite places in Newport already! It just opened and we already went twice on our last trip to Newport in one week. We absolutely loved the tasty club sandwiches, salads, drinks (I had lemonade and my wife had iced tea). The service is very good. The ambiance and beauty of place is exceptional- how can you go wrong sitting at Elms after all! Highly recommend you make a trip out and make reservation in advance as it can get busy at times. Dine like the royals for a day!

✨ The Elms – A Grand Tour Worth Experiencing ✨ Taking the audio tour at The Elms was nothing short of amazing. The storytelling brought the Gilded Age to life, guiding us through the grand rooms and exquisite décor that still feels timeless today. What really stood out was seeing the behind-the-scenes details—especially the kitchen. Tucked away and literally “put on the back burner” back in the day, it was fascinating to realize how differently the household ran compared to the opulence shown upstairs. The contrast between servant life and high society was eye-opening. Every corner of the mansion revealed layers of history and artistry. From the intricate furnishings to the architectural flourishes, you can feel the care and vision poured into every detail. Highly recommend the audio tour—it’s engaging, informative, and makes you appreciate not just the grandeur, but also the grit that kept it all running.

It was awesome to walk through and see a piece of Newport history and to catch a glimpse into the lives of a historic, wealthy Newport family and their service staff. The house is beautiful even though a few rooms were under construction. It's amazing even though it's a bit more "simple" than the nearby Breakers and other ultra gilded mansions around. Worth the tour if you have a day to spare. I'd recommend this ( and the other mansions) as part of a self guided tour to save hundreds vs the cost of an on ship cruise excursion. You can see more, do it at your own pace, and save. Easy access from port and a nice 10 minute walk to the other mansions. Just remember to download the app and bring headphones so you can listen to the tour.

Visiting The Elms Mansion was one of the most inspiring and mind-blowing experiences I’ve had in the United States. Having recently started watching The Gilded Age, it felt surreal to walk through the real-life settings and made the visit feel even more personal. The mansion and its gardens are stunning, and everything is beautifully maintained. I purchased the Newport Historical Society membership ($115, includes entry for a guest and access to all the mansions), and I’m already planning future trips to return and explore the rest. There’s also a new café on site that I’ll try next time. One of the highlights was the audio guide — easy to download with your ticket or membership. I didn’t have headphones, but even at low volume it guided me room by room, explaining what I was seeing, which made the experience interactive and exciting.
Karina T — Google review
The Elms was included in the tickets we bought to visit the Breakers. The Elms isn’t as grandiose as the Breakers, but it was pleasant to visit. The French architecture and decor are lighter and elegant. Remember to download the app according to the instructions there and bring your own headphones/ear buds for listening to the audio guide as you step into each room.

Beautiful piece of Newport history. This symbolic château represents the Gilded Age and how this French Victorian château inspired the foundation of this castle. The grounds are stunning and there is even a Café on the outside grounds! Feels like a trip to Europe. Great for families and there are so many parts of the castle to discover! The self-guided audio tour was a great addition to the tour. You download an app and as you guide through the tour, an audio explanation will play depending on the room you are in.

Chateau-sur-Mer is an extravagant Victorian mansion built in 1852 for William S. Wetmore, a merchant in the China Trade. Over the years, it has undergone numerous renovations and now showcases various Victorian architectural and decorative styles. The house offers tours featuring its opulent 3-story great hall and period furnishings. It was once the grandest residence in Newport, hosting lavish events that marked the beginning of the Gilded Age in the city.
Chateau-sur-Mer is one of the most distinctive and quietly majestic mansions in Newport. I first visited back in 2012, when guided tours were the only way to see the interior. While the live tours were informative, they also created access issues—visitors often couldn’t get in unless they were lucky enough to join a scheduled group. Thankfully, the Preservation Society has since introduced a self-guided tour via an app, which has greatly improved the experience. Now, you can explore at your own pace and truly soak in the atmosphere of this remarkable home. This mansion was owned by the Wetmore family, with Governor George Peabody Wetmore being its most prominent resident. One of the things that struck me most during my visit was how intellectually rich the house felt. Unlike some of the other Newport mansions that emphasize opulence and spectacle, Chateau-sur-Mer exudes a more introspective grandeur. The interiors feature extensive wood paneling, built-in bookcases, and carefully curated curios, many of which are thoughtfully displayed behind glass. Compared to a place like Marble House, which is stunning but more focused on presentation, Chateau-sur-Mer feels like the home of people who valued education, culture, and heritage. The architectural style itself is unique. Originally built in the Italianate style, it was later renovated into a Second Empire design, giving it a layered, almost time-traveling quality. The interiors are darker in tone—rich woods, deep colors, and lower lighting—which gives the home a moody elegance that stands out among the more gilded halls of Newport’s other mansions. One practical note: there is no elevator, so if you have mobility concerns, you’ll have to figure out how to take the stairs. That said, I used a cane and found it manageable—just take your time and use the handrails. Also important to know: Chateau-sur-Mer is only open for a few months out of the year, so be sure to check the Preservation Society’s website for seasonal hours before planning your visit. Outside, the grounds are peaceful and stately, with shaded paths and manicured lawns. While it may not be the flashiest or most photographed of the Newport mansions, Chateau-sur-Mer offers a deeper, more reflective experience. It’s a place that invites you to slow down, appreciate craftsmanship, and imagine what life was like in a different kind of Gilded Age home—one shaped by intellect and tradition as much as wealth. If you’re someone who appreciates history, architecture, or simply wants to see beyond the sparkle of the more famous estates, this house is an absolute must. There is plenty of free parking at the property.

A wonderful Mansion less visited. Stained glass and wallpaper abound. Be sure to do the grounds tour. The trees are absolutely breathtaking.

Visited Chateau-Sur-Mer on Saturday, 6/31/25. Arrived a few minutes before it opened, and were the only ones there, besides one other person. This tour was self-guided, which we generally prefer, so that we can proceed at our own pace. At the info desk, they checked our tickets, which we had purchased online and printed out at home. There, we also obtained a printed copy of the tour narrative- we like this better than getting the app and wearing headphones. Each room has sign, so that you can then read the corresponding history and architectural details. It was fascinating to see and to imagine how the occupants lived, and to take in the decor that was popular at the time. If you have any questions, the attendants are are helpful and well informed. We spent about forty five minutes in the house. We then spent an equal amount of time wandering the lovely, well-maintained grounds. Most of the trees are labeled as to type, which I appreciated. If you've never done so, I suggest spending a few moments under one of the weeping beech trees. We also saw the croquet pitch and the moon gate. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable visit.

Great place to visit. Definitely do the app tour (bring your earbuds). This house is much different stylewise than the other mansions available to tour; it's also a lot less busy than the Breakers.

Beautiful old mansion. A piece of the Gilded age, well preserved for everyone to enjoy.

Not as spectacular as some of the other mansions. It is still worth a visit once you see the larger ones first.

This is a great mansion to tour. This one was built in 1855 and significantly understated compared to The Breakers. Still a very impressive place and the woodwork is exceptional. There are several rooms (Library and Dining) that feature fantastic wood carvings from a 19th century Italian woodcarver. According to an employee there, there are only 5 rooms in the U.S. still preserving this woodcarver’s work and 2 of the rooms are in this mansion.
Jeff M — Google review
The house is strongly victorian in style. Its very dark and heavy. At first I thought a gentleman must have decorated it but there was a lady of the house and even her bedroom was dark. Just not my taste when you see the grand opulence and airy lightness of the The Breakers, Elms, and Marble House. Its a nice house, just not in line with the other 3.

Rosecliff is a Gilded Age mansion in Newport, designed by renowned architect Stanford White for Theresa Fair Oelrichs. The mansion boasts the largest ballroom in Newport and was known for hosting lavish parties, including one featuring Harry Houdini. It is also famous for its appearance in the film The Great Gatsby. Visitors can enjoy audio tours and visit the gift shop while taking in the grandeur of this historic estate.
Rosecliff is an unforgettable encounter with elegance—like stepping into a romantic daydream. It’s one of those places that truly takes your breath away, the kind of timeless beauty and grace you rarely see anymore. Inspired by the Grand Trianon at Versailles, the mansion is both grand and inviting, with that classic Beaux-Arts charm. The ocean views are absolutely stunning, the gardens are picture-perfect, and there’s a quiet magic to it all that lingers long after you leave.

Rosecliff is truly one of the most breathtaking venues in Newport. As a wedding photographer, I’m always inspired by the elegance of this mansion—the sweeping staircase, ornate ballroom, and manicured gardens make for the most timeless backdrops. Every corner feels like it was designed for a love story, from golden hour portraits on the terrace overlooking the water to romantic first dances under the gilded ceilings. The team here is also wonderful to work with, ensuring every event runs seamlessly. If you’re looking for a venue that’s equal parts iconic and romantic, Rosecliff is a dream come true. (Sharing a few of my favorite photos from a wedding here so future couples can envision the magic!)

Rich or poor it's nice to have money! Loved touring all the gilded age homes. Should have a package deal to see all the homes that are open. Currently you can purchase the Breakers plus 2. Parking was adequate however bathroom facilities were lacking for females. There was ALWAYS a line. I liked being able to have the self guided tour on my phone. Maybe something should be said about bringing personal ear buds. We ended up going to Walmart and buying some because we did not bring them from home. Home was not as furnished as the others but just as beautiful. Enjoyed hearing the stories about the owners and servants.

Although I like the Breakers more, I love that there is an art exhibit in this place and they host events. It was good to learn more about the architect himself and I could see little draft/working pieces of other homes in the exhibit. The "backyard" also has amazing gatsby views.

Went for the 2025 Newport Flower Show. Had never gone before and now understand why there are limited tickets and specific time slots for said tickets. It was cute and fun, but very crowded. As a "younger" horticulturalist who came to the NFS to supplement the loss of the Boston Flower Show, I was slightly disappointed and overall would think twice about doing it again. It felt like most people were there to be pretty around pretty plants and dont get their hands dirty 😂 I expected a slow moving crowd as these events usually attract the older generation, and that is exactly what happened. It wasn't just the elderly's fault though. I have patience for old people who love plants. It was the combination of older people and the younger IG photo snapping crowd was a disaster. The house is big but not THAT big, and I feel like everyone was so posh with their noses in the air they didnt take anyone else's time or space into consideration. There were displays I didnt even see because everyone needed a photo and couldnt get ir right, or would stand and wait til other got out kf their shot to get the perfect shot. The people were not the ephemeral vibe that plants and gardening is. The vendors fell below par, totally catering to the pretty posh people instead of plant people. I did get to touch base with a vendor from the Boston Flower Show, and that was great. Would probably attend solely to purchase from her in the future.

Ask for elevators. There are lots of stairs with no railings. The gardens and back lawn are the best parts.

An interesting “party house” that features a self guided & app supported audio tour of the interior. Upstairs there is an art gallery with historical photographs, paintings and drawings. There is NO ACCESS to the Cliffwalk so plan accordingly.

My husband and I went on a rainy day and it was perfect. It was not overly crowded and there wasn’t any wait. Rosecliff is definitely one of the more “demure” houses but that’s what makes it so beautiful. It was designed tastefully. It’s definitely smaller but still just as interesting as some of the bigger houses. The staff are friendly and informative. Highly recommend bringing headphones if you decide to do the self-guided tour! Overall, really beautiful!

Love the festivals at Bowens wharf. Right in the center of Newport. On the water with bars and food, perfect location. Oyster fest and the Seafood fest are a blast with live bands and seafood. Shout out to Dudemanbro and Timeless, two of our favorite bands. Fourth of July is so nice with the fireworks and celebrations. Love taking the sailboat and rum runner sunsets tours. Great stop on the bike tour! Shout out to the Landing for the great live music and water views. So many places to explore and try out on the wharf. The National Museum of American Illustration is an institution dedicated to showcasing the finest works of American illustration from the mid-19th century to the 1950s. The museum's collection includes pieces by some of the most renowned artists in history, such as Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, and Violet Oakley. The museum offers free guided tours every Friday that shed light on the stories behind the images and how they've shaped American culture.
This museum houses a nice collection of illustration art. The museum itself is in one of the Newport mansions so you feel like you're getting a 2 for the price of 1 outing. The history of the mansion is detailed along with the art. After paying, you watch a brief introductory movie which gives a general overview of the collection. Then each visitor gets a tablet with headphones which serves as a guide as you walk the rooms and look at the art. It's great because you can read or listen while you walk along at your own pace. This is helpful because the mansion is crammed full of artwork and it gives the visitor time to absorb it all. One of the most extraordinary aspects of the experience is how close you are to all of the art and furniture. It's very much honor system based as far as not touching the art. While I respected the no touching, I LOVED that I was able to step up close and get to see all of the details in the majority of the pieces. If you are in Rhode Island, I highly recommend stopping by this amazing museum.

'A Personal Plea to Reconnect with My Uncle' My name is Jake Cutler, and I am the nephew of Laurence Cutler. My uncle Laurence played a significant role in painstakingly renovating this property and building this museum. We have fond memories of visiting Judy and Laurence at their home, attending events, celebrations, and private family gatherings. Since around 2021, I have been unable to contact my Uncle Laurence, and it's been about four years now. No one in the Cutler family has been able to reach him. His name has been removed from the website and all related content. I am reaching out to Judy Cutler, Jennifer Goffman/Greenawalt, and Jon Greenawalt with a heartfelt plea: Please, please let me see my uncle again. You know my number, my email, and we are connected on LinkedIn. I am more than willing to come to RI at your convenience. Please let me see my uncle. Thank you for considering my request. Sincerely, - Jake

Judy and Lawrence Cutler have created a magnificent venue to view a fabulous collection of American illustrators. Everything about this mansion is perfect and the audio tour that took us through the impressive Vernon Court Mansion was delightful. My mom and I took a mother daughter trip and this by far was the highlight of our vacation here in Newport. We were lucky enough to meet Lawrence and Judy and they sure were special. We felt so honored and lucky to pal around with them the remainder of our time there. This was an experience that my mom and I will always remember and treasure. This museum will far exceed your expectations and is a must see!! ❤️

To be honest, the price was kind of steep for the amount you're seeing. There is no seating the entire time you're walking through which I'm inclined to think is a mistake. Not very wheelchair accessible. There are steps everywhere. But the artwork - which is the main reason behind the museum itself - as always was fantastic.

The Redwood Library and Athenaeum is a colonial-era library established in 1747 by Abraham Redwood. The neoclassical building, designed by architect Peter Harrison, houses rare books and a room dedicated to significant American portraiture. It also features a gallery with rotating exhibits and a serene reading room. Throughout the warmer months, the library hosts refined concerts and garden parties.
📚Must-See for History Buffs, Artists, and Bibliophiles📚 It's more than just a library! The Redwood Library contains historical artifacts (rotating displays), artwork (some originals!), sculpture, and, of course, thousands of books (many of which are several hundred years old). It's free to enter and browse (there are bathrooms as well!). The library staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about their work. Please support this invaluable establishment with your patronage and visit!

Kingscote is a historic Gothic Revival mansion in Newport, built in 1839 and later expanded and redesigned by McKim, Mead & White. It was one of the earliest summer cottages commissioned by wealthy southerners to escape the heat before the Civil War. The house features period furnishings and unique architectural elements such as cork ceilings and Tiffany glass windows.
Underated Newport mansion. Beautiful restoration with loads of original period pieces. Written description of each room guides you through. Although not as opulent as The Breakers or other Newport mansions, it is really worth the stop to get transported back in time.

Kingcote is one of the older Mansions that was slated to be knocked down and was rescued from the 1950-1960 (town decision?). Great woodwork and a lot of original artifacts. Grounds have a European Fernleaf Beech Tree thats very rare in US, by my experience. Doesnt seem prone to Beech tree diseases. Part of Newport Mansion Preservation and worth getting 2 person memebership that also allows a guest. No private tours for Kingscote typically (rare).

Love going to museums when im out of town. It's winter time so they were renovating a lot of the room. The front desk only asked for donations, so we didn't have to pay for an entrance fee. Lots of history in these walls and it's just a nice place to check out.

This is such a gem. The current interactive exhibit by Bobby Anspach is like no other — it’s rare to be able to engage with art so freely without long waits or crowds. The setting itself adds so much: a beautiful, calm space that makes the visit feel almost like a retreat. Oh and the kids loved the scavenger hunt!Honestly, the atmosphere alone is worth the trip, and the fact that they offer free parking is just the cherry on top. Highly recommend making this a stop — it’s an underrated gem compared to the usual Newport attractions.

I loved this museum! There is a variety of art, so something for everyone. I went free with a museum pass but would have paid for admission - I'd love to come back.

Nice museum worth the visit. Thoughtful curation and exhibits in a beautiful environment that feels very personal. Perfect location in the heart of Newport shopping and dining.
C. K — Google review
I stopped by this cute little museum because I absolutely love seeing art. If you are a member, the entrance fee is free, but otherwise, it is $15 for adults, which, in my opinion, is quite steep for the amount of exhibits you get to see between the two buildings. You can pay the fee at either location and the staff is friendly and helpful. Both locations, including the grounds, are well organized and maintained. This place is definitely worth checking out while visiting the area.

Such a nice little museum in a really cool building! Absolutely loved the surrealism exhibit by Arghavan Khosravi that was there in March 2024. Staff was so welcoming and helpful!

Better than I expected! There are two buildings. The older building has very charming interior details, a gorgeous staircase, nice paintings. I enjoyed it a lot!

Came to this museam by a happy accident just walking by and saw what appeared to be a family festival with food trucks, and tabling vendors. It was the auction, and it was a great time. Free museam entry, interactive exhibitions, free vender give aways, and wonderful live music. We were able to win one of the auctioned paintings, a water color sketch artist sketched and painted us for free (5 mins), and we talked with some beautiful and interesting individuals. This location is inside of what appears to be an old home and is tastefully assembled. The ceiling wood work. And the arranged art make this a gem to the community. Very happy to have come across this place. For those interested in art or not, keep elan eye open for their activities, I'd bet they have them often and I'd bet they are just as fun.

Ocean Drive is a vibrant and iconic street in Miami Beach, lined with colorful Art Deco buildings, trendy restaurants, and lively bars. It's known for its energetic atmosphere, beautiful ocean views, and the perfect spot for people-watching. The palm-lined boulevard is a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike who come to experience the unique blend of history, culture, and entertainment that Ocean Drive has to offer.

I drove the Ocean Drive loop after visiting the Cliff Walk. It’s a peaceful, 25-minute scenic route along the coast with views of the water and historic summer homes. The road is smooth and makes for an easy drive. That said, it didn’t really stand out to me. If you’ve experienced other coastal drives (like in California), this might feel a bit plain in comparison. It’s worth doing if you’re already in Newport and have extra time, but not something I’d go out of my way for.

Just off the coast walk is this short drive around the coast of Newport. There are plenty of places to stop off in your car and go for a swim or gaze at the views. Also the route has views of some amazing houses. Takes about an hour to carefully drive round.

The park features a visitor center with amenities such as restroom facilities, picnic tables, and even kite rentals. Perfect stop on the bike tour! Awesome views and fun climbing on the rocks and going into the water. Perfect day, did the bike tour from Ft Adams to Castle hill, then this park and cliff walk hen back to Ft Adams. So fun! Highly recommend and give yourself time to enjoy all the scenery. Kites fly here often and there are festivals too. Gotta love the wiener truck too. Lol

Beautiful and clean park. The water and views of boats passing are so relaxing. You can also walk close to the water by way of the large rocks. There's picnic tables, public bathrooms, free parking and is dog friendly. There were also a few food trucks and a place to purchase kites to fly on great windy day.

Nice place to hang out with friends and family for cookouts, picnics, and of course flying kites. beautiful sunsets, plenty of parking, lots of room for a crowd.

Took us by surprise, we were just driving around when we spotted kids flying kites- decided to stop, buy and fly one- amazing experience. Kites range from $30 and above- they have a tiny store there, you also do have a food and lemonade truck and all this right across the beach. A quiet, fun place to spend your day with family and friends.

The Audrain Auto Museum, located in the historic Audrain Building on Bellevue Avenue, is a must-visit for car enthusiasts and history lovers in Newport, Rhode Island. The museum boasts an impressive collection of over 350 cars and motorcycles spanning from the pre-War era to the 21st century. With annual thematic exhibits and events like the popular Audrain Newport Concours & Motor Week, visitors can immerse themselves in automotive history, design evolution, and innovation.
My second time visiting. The exhibit traced Porche development from racecar to streetcar. I love Newport and this museum changes it's exhibit so I will always check it out when there. The staff is always willing to talk with you whether you are a car afficionado or a casual admirer. You can peruse at your own pace for a nominal entry fee. Well worth the visit.

Weekday win at Audrain! Took my kid to the Audrain Auto Museum and it was such a vibe. Pro tip: grab your tix on Groffers—it’s way cheaper than the museum site. Student ID? Even more savings. The theme when we went was all about intercooler engines (kinda nerdy, kinda cool). They had this hide-and-seek game with little stuffed animals in the cars—sounds easy, but it’s actually tricky. My kid was obsessed. Also, shoutout to the racing sim—$10 for 10 mins, and totally worth it. Felt like the real deal with the paddle shifters. Weekday visits are the move—zero crowds, super chill. If you’re into cars or just want a fun fam outing, def check it out!

Nice setting in the middle of Newport, and an impressive collection of Porsche vehicles the day we went (they regularly rotate their exhibitions, so be sure to check what's currently on exhibit before you go). For others who are trying to budget their time in the area, my family of four was able to take plenty of pics and get our fill of the cars within about 30-45 minutes.

Porsche exhibit ended today. It was really cool to see all of the different vehicles in the exhibit. Lots of cars, each with a great story and the people there are extremely knowledgeable. There is a rally car exhibit coming next and then a super and hyper car exhibit in early 2026. It’s going to be a great stop if I come back.

Trinity Church, located in Queen Anne Square, has a rich history dating back to 1726. It has been a place of worship for notable figures such as George Washington, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Andrew, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The church has also served as a filming location for several well-known movies. President Theodore Roosevelt even christened his godson there in 1902. The church's traditional New England village appearance and elegant interior make it a must-see attraction in Newport.
This is a very bright, historic church with some interesting details and features! Pew boxes, original flooring, pulpit, altar, and windows all tell an intriguing story. And the church is still used for services to this day. The volunteer/staff on hand was very friendly and knew so much about the history of the church and congregation. Definitely worth a visit! Check out the graveyard outside, too. Also, the steeple is visible from out in the harbor of Newport.

We took the Colonial Newport Walking Tour as a shore excursion on our Silver Shadow Cruise. Ken, our guide, gave us a lot of information on Newport and Rhode Island’s early history. A major stop is Trinity Church. Here we learn about the church’s early roots, designed like the Old North Church in Boston. Inside we see how each family had their own block. We saw this in the old North Church. Each family decorated their section. The church was very plain in the past without Stain Glass windows. Today stained glass windows are used as fundraiser for the church. A lot of history in the church.

⛪✝️Lovely Church & Cemetery⛪✝️ I wasn't able to go inside of the church; however, while touring the Newport area on foot, I passed by Trinity Church and enjoyed strolling through the small cemetery and reading the history and headstones. There is much for photographers, architects, and history buffs to enjoy. The grounds are lush with greenery and shaded by either the trees or the church itself, depending upon the time of day. It's a lovely spot to take a moment to collect yourself, breathe, and reflect before continuing on your way.
Casey — Google review
The sound of the bell pulled me into this church. I was pretty surprised to learn the history it holds. It felt like a journey back in time. The guides here tell you about the culture, the society around 1700-1900. It truly reiterates the importance of being informed by the past.
Praharsha E — Google review
I walk past this church every morning and never went inside until a few days ago. It’s one of the most beautiful churches you will ever visit. George Washington worshiped here in 1781 and his pew is marked. We had an impromptu tour given by a lovely woman who shared so much of the church’s history. This is a MUST when visiting Newport.
Jodi C — Google review
Located in Queen Anne Park, it's a beautiful old church, episcopal, in Newport. Founded 1698. When it is open, there is usually a volunteer there to answer questions you may have. Although it is free, donations are encouraged. I was there in the fall for the pumpkin sale. 🎃. There are lots of other activities, like a strawberry festival in spring.
Anita M — Google review
What an incredible church! The history was so interesting to learn about and we loved walking around during our trip. The woman inside was so knowledgeable and kind to us throughout our visit. I would definitely recommend this to anyone and wish we had attended a service too!
Rachel T — Google review
We attended a service here today to see the church & tour it (as far as I can tell, currently, historic tours are only open on Sundays after service). The immediate vibe was warm and welcoming, much like the city itself. They made this service very tourist friendly with well laid out pamphlets so you didn’t get lost during it. We followed along easily with our respective protestant and catholic backgrounds. It was beautiful, well-preserved, with ushers and individual box pews. There’s historical plaques on the walls and a self-guided tour pamphlet you can grab at the door. It was a very cool experience; definitely worth going. The historic graveyard around the church is also interesting.

Non-profit organization
The Newport Mansions Preservation Society, a non-profit organization established in 1945, is dedicated to conserving and maintaining historic homes in Newport, Rhode Island. The society manages several Gilded Age buildings and offers educational programs, tours, and events highlighting the architectural and cultural significance of these landmark estates. Located at 424 Bellevue Avenue, the society oversees properties such as The Breakers, Marble House, The Elms, and Rosecliff.
Very much worth the visit. The society does a lot to make sure the mansions are easy to access and also provide resources to guide the sightseeing and make the experience worthwhile. I only had time to do the Vanderbilt tour - The Breakers which are the pictures I am attaching here. Will recommend doing all tours over a weekend trip!
Adati T — Google review
Our recent visit to Newport, Rhode Island was truly unforgettable—and the highlight of the day was touring The Breakers, the most iconic of all the Gilded Age mansions. If you only have time for one estate, this is the one to see. Built for Cornelius Vanderbilt II in the 1890s, The Breakers is a jaw-dropping Italian Renaissance-style mansion with 70 rooms, an oceanfront terrace, and interiors that rival European palaces. From marble columns to crystal chandeliers and ornate ceilings, every room is a work of art. Our guide Rob made the experience even more special by weaving in rich historical context and colorful stories about the Vanderbilt family and the era of high society summers in Newport. Also funny trolly car to drive around on! 🎬 Film Location Bonus Fans of HBO’s The Gilded Age will love knowing that The Breakers was actually used as a filming location for Bertha Russell’s New York mansion, including scenes shot in the Great Hall and Music Room. The moment you step inside, you feel like you’re part of a movie set. 🏛️ Other Mansions Worth Exploring While The Breakers was the centerpiece of our tour, Rob also shared stories and insights about several other homes that gave us a full picture of Newport’s luxurious past: • Marble House – Built for Alva and William K. Vanderbilt, this mansion is rich in imported marble and boasts a grand staircase fit for royalty. Alva later became a leader in the women’s suffrage movement, adding political depth to its history. • The Elms – Inspired by a French château, The Elms is best known today for its fascinating Servant Life Tour, which showcases hidden tunnels and the lives of those who worked behind the scenes. There’s even a short film called “Live the Drama” that brings a real-life labor dispute at The Elms to life. Bonus: The Elms was also featured in The Gilded Age series as the Russell family’s summer home. • Rosecliff – With its Versailles-inspired ballroom, this mansion was used in the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby starring Robert Redford. It’s the ultimate party mansion. • Chateau-sur-Mer – One of the earlier mansions, reflecting High Victorian style and showcasing how Newport transformed from a quiet port town into a playground for the ultra-wealthy. 🚗 Celebrity Sightseeing: Jay Leno’s Seafair Mansion As we drove along Ocean Drive, our guide pointed out Jay Leno’s private estate, Seafair. Designed to look like a ship crashing into the Atlantic, this 15,000-square-foot mansion sits right on the cliffs with panoramic ocean views. While it’s not open for tours, you can catch a glimpse from the road—and it’s a fun reminder that Newport’s tradition of wealth and prestige continues into modern times. 📝 Final Thoughts If you’re even remotely interested in architecture, history, or the drama of high society, you’ll be blown away by The Breakers. Add in the nearby mansions, filming locations, and a dash of celebrity trivia, and you’ve got the perfect Newport day. Highly recommend asking for Rob as your tour guide—his passion and storytelling took the experience to another level. He also gives you tips for restaurants to eat at and other local secrets!

I love doing these tours. The houses are so beautiful. Seeing what the rich lived like during the Gilded Age is so amazing. I hope to work there in the future and have the opportunity to share these amazing stories with everyone!
Melissa T — Google review
These mansions really are quite breathtaking. The amount of intricate detail in their design are really quite fascinating. Pictures really don't do it Justice, it's one of those you have to see things. While they don't provide audio devices, you can simply scan the provided barcode before entering the mansion on your phone and be able to walk through each room at your own pace and learn a great deal about how they used to live in those times. To me this is even easier. I do feel like you're missing out on the experience if you don't listen. Overall fun experience. Go ahead and feel like royalty even if for just an hour 👍
Erick M — Google review
These homes were absolutely stunning and is a must see if in Newport Rhode Island. Priced well only $34 to see two of the homes and to be able to take as long as you like touring the homes and the grounds. It’s also a place to see some rooms that they are filming the new show the Gilded Age.

It was a dream come true to finally be able to explore the mansions along the cliff walk. The guided and audio tours were fascinating. I hope to return soon.

The website takes you in circles when attempting to purchase passes. When I select member pricing I am immediately brought back to the home page. Any time I need to purchase passes for a timed event or tour I have to call their offices and play phone tag to reserve a space. As a member this is frustrating and can only imagine what international visitors go through when attempting to navigate the pass purchases. The Isaac Bell House, located on Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island, is a prime example of shingle-style architecture from the late 19th century. Built in 1883 for wealthy cotton broker Isaac Bell, this historic house showcases a blend of Old English and European architectural elements with colonial American and exotic details. Designed by the renowned firm McKim, Mead & White, it features sweeping rooflines and natural materials that contrast with earlier architectural styles.
Nice tour, do not overlook this mansion. Nice having an actor guide. Love the additional architectural discussion. It was very interesting.
Zach T — Google review
The Isaac Bell House is now open for about one month. If you are a Newport Mansions member, you may have to book your free tickets through the member portal. I have been a member for years, and the changes after COVID include restrictive dates and rules to see certain houses. Prior to 2020, visitors didn't have to book a tour for the Isaac Bell House -- they could just show up. Now, the process is cumbersome. I have a member plus individual membership. We got the tour, but were told we couldn't use the bathroom until every single person from the previous tour left the house, and that specific tour had started late because there were late people. Lovely house with minimal furnishings. The tour highlights the architecture and the wood paneling. Can you look at the second and fifth pictures and tell me there is no bulge in the roof? I was told there is no bulge, that there is a sun shadow.
Kelly C — Google review
Although not as grand as the more famous houses in Newport, this was one of our favorites to tour.

The Isaac Bell House is an extraordinary historic house and a major place of interest in Newport Rhode Island. In September of 2018, I brought and treated my wife and myself for a guided tour of the Isaac Bell House when celebrating our honeymoon in Newport, Rhode Island!!! Designed by the renowned architectural firm, Mckim Mead & White during America’s Gilded Age, the house served as a summer residence for Isaac Bell Jr, a successful cotton broker & investor. Today, the Isaac Bell House is a historic house museum, offering guided tours to the public, and due to its rich heritage and well designed architectural features, has been listed on the National Register Of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark. During our guided tour, my wife and I learned much about the history of the Isaac Bell House and were very impressed with the use of the Shingle Style Architecture on its exterior. We also liked the wall-paneling and wooden floor which is featured in the house’s interior. The Isaac Bell House is an outstanding architectural & historic landmark, and my wife and I very much enjoyed our guided tour experience!!!

Great piece of history! We had a lovely time visiting. Be sure to put in ‘Brenton point stare park’ into your gps to get there faster than trying to find it on your own like we attempted :-) it was extremely muddy walking through the field, so maybe bring boots!

We had a tour led by Phillip. He was extremely knowledgeable, and kept the tour very interesting as he shared his knowledge of the house, its unique architecture, and its history of owners. If you are an architecture lover and want to hear great stories, this is the place to go. Up there with the big 4 of the Newport Mansions, even if it is so different and not as "grand."
Emmalynn B — Google review
The Isaac Bell House is a historic house and National Historic Landmark at 70 Perry Street (at its corner with Bellevue Avenue) in Newport, Rhode Island. Also known as Edna Villa, it is one of the outstanding examples of Shingle Style architecture in the United States. It was designed by McKim, Mead, and White, and built during the Gilded Age, when Newport was the summer resort of choice for America's wealthiest families. Isaac Bell Jr. was a successful cotton broker and investor, and the brother-in-law of James Gordon Bennett Jr., publisher of the New York Herald. Bell hired the New York architectural firm of McKim, Mead, and White (Charles Follen McKim, William R. Mead, and Stanford White) to design his summer cottage. Known in Newport for designing Newport Casino, and later in Boston for designing Boston Public Library, they also designed the famous Pennsylvania Station in New York. Construction took place between 1881 and 1883. The Shingle Style was pioneered by Henry Hobson Richardson in his design for the William Watts Sherman House, also in Newport. This style of Victorian architecture was popular in the late nineteenth century and named after the extensive use of wooden shingles on the exterior. The Isaac Bell House exemplifies the style through its unpainted wood shingles, simple window & trim details, and multiple porches. It combines elements of the English Arts and Crafts movement philosophy, colonial American detailing, and features a Japanese-inspired open floor plan and bamboo-style porch columns. Interior features include inglenook fireplaces, natural rattan wall coverings, wall paneling and narrow-band wooden floors. The building's history includes being split up into apartments and serving as a nursing home. With the help of Carol Chiles Ballard, the house was bought in 1994 by the Preservation Society of Newport County, which won awards for its restoration, and which now operates it as a house museum. The Isaac Bell House was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1997.

The Museum of Newport History & Shop, located in the classic 1772 Brick Market building, offers a comprehensive overview of Newport's rich history. Visitors can explore diverse exhibits covering topics such as the city's 17th-century English settlers, religious tolerance, and the subsequent influx of African Americans, Jews, Quakers, Irish, Italians, Greeks, and Portuguese. The museum also provides insights into the Gilded Age through a reproduction 1890 omnibus tour of Bellevue Avenue.
Lots of historical books and souvenirs from newport. We actually only visited the shop, the museum is upstairs and it costs $5. You can also book some walking tours there. We did the rum tour. Learned about how alcohol was treated during the last 300 years and had a rum cocktail at the end at the stoneacre Inn. It was interesting and the guide was very professional. We had a good time even though it rained on the day of the tour.

I visited Newport on a cruise. It was a wet autumn day. Whilst i left my wife to visit the stores I headed to the museum and fund they offer walking tours. I am fascinated with history so for me this was a must. The guide was pleasant but not charming. He was generally knowledgeable. The walk was at a gentle pace and lasted maybe an hour. It was a good introduction to the city centre. But we did not enter any of the public buildings. After the tour ended I took myself off to investigate further.

Nestled in the heart of Newport, Hunter House stands as a remarkable testament to mid-18th-century Georgian architecture. Constructed between 1748 and 1754, this historic mansion showcases period furnishings that transport visitors back in time. Originally built by prosperous merchant Jonathon Nichols, Jr., it later became the Revolutionary War headquarters for French admiral Charles Louis d'Arsac de Ternay after its Loyalist owner departed.
The visit here is of great quality. The dozent really know the house and the details of its furniture and history. The location is great, with a nice view on the bay. Very welcoming staff. Higly recommended. Make sure you book online before your visit.

Our tour guide was really knowledge and detail about the history of this building. How the building was restored as well. However, it’s a small building to see. The interior was left in quite original condition.

We visited Hunter house during the week. Reservations are timed and have to make reservations online early. Tours are limited to eight people total. Our tour guide was Lauren Armstrong and she was excellent! She had an enormous amount of information not only about the house and the owners, but also about Newport in the 1700s to current times. She took time to explain each of the owners connection to the house along with their histories. The tour lasted approximately an hour and a half that went by very quickly. We all came away with a much better understanding of Newport’s place during the early days of our nation as well as what life was like back then. Hunter House does not have the size or opulence of the mansions on Bellevue Avenue but what it does have is a wealth of history and information about Newport and it’s people. Our group was very impressed with the quality and information given on the tour. We all gave it a 10 out of 10.

Yes it's another historic house in Newport. And yes it's worth a visit. If you love old houses, taking a step by in time, and soaking up a little local history then the Hunter House is worth your time. It's not a "must see" like the great Gilded Age palaces, but it is worth a visit. Some comment that the $25 pp admission price is steep. I suggest that it costs a fortune to restore and maintain these national treasures of homes. If you love history, it's worth the price.

Great colonial house with a different vibe than the big mansions. Beautiful Newport furniture, tall clocks, and fireplace tiles. Excellent tour guide, knowledgeable about the house and Newport as a colony during the British occupation. Nice walk out on the nearby dock.

Had a very informative tour of the house. Our guide Nancy was great! Engaging and addressed everyone's questions throughout the tour. Definitely would recommend visiting this house while touring Newport!

Nice grounds on the waterfront. Very historical. The tour mostly focused on the furniture craft of the time with some tales about the previous owners of the home. Likely a great tour for those who love antiquing. It's a small house relative to the others on the house tours and would be one of the first to be cut from my itinerary.

The house was wonderful, our tour guide (Owen) had a good sense of humor and did a great job with the tour. The furniture was nice, but hard to see due to a lack of lighting. Overall a wonderful tour. I would highly recommend it.

Nestled at the intersection of Thames Street and America's Cup Avenue, Brick Marketplace offers a delightful array of shopping venues. The area exudes a charming seaside vibe with its outdoor benches, brick walkways, and nautical atmosphere. This pedestrian-friendly space is home to small independent shops offering clothing, souvenirs, and more. Visitors can also enjoy the quaint village-like ambiance with its collection of shops and restaurants.
9.9.23 If you're in the area and love photography, you'll sprint towards this area. It's a tourist trap for sure. It's such a simple concept, a bunch of bright colored umbrella hanging over your head while you walk down a brick covered walkway, surrounded by shops, cafes, and restaurants. But please note that these do get taken down seasonally, especially with fall/winter approaching.

I absolutely loved Umbrella Sky at Brick Marketplace. When we choose a vacation, we are always looking for a colorful street and this began, of course, in Europe. Now, I am finding my homeland doing the same, which makes me very happy. Here's to color and the "Colorful Umbrella Sky."

Very sweet little shopping area. Loved the vibe. Every store we went in, which was most of them, welcomed our dog. Cupcakes at Charlie's Cupcakes were phenomenal, lots of souvenirs in many places, several jewlery places, and close by is the Newport Museum with local art and spices.

Nestled at the end of the historic Ocean Drive in Newport, Castle Hill Lighthouse stands as a beacon of maritime history since its completion in 1890. This stunning granite structure, rising 34 feet above Narragansett Bay, was designed to guide vessels through the East Passage between Aquidneck and Conanicut Islands.
Castle Hill Lighthouse is a hidden gem and a must-see in Newport. It’s a free activity that starts with parking at Castle Hill, followed by a short, unassuming dirt path—easy to miss if you’re not paying attention, but trust me, don’t skip it. The lighthouse itself is incredible—you can actually walk right up to it and touch it! The views of the coastline and ocean are absolutely breathtaking, making it a perfect spot for photos or just taking in the beauty of the area. While you can’t go inside the lighthouse, the experience is still a highlight of any Newport visit. A peaceful, stunning spot that feels like a secret treasure!
Katie A — Google review
Cool little lighthouse with a short, easy trail—about 1/4 mile—from the parking lot by the marina and Coast Guard boat. We got soaked on the way there and back—it really poured during our visit! You can’t go inside, but steps lead right up to it. Great views, even in the rain!

Me and my friends came here for sunset and it was gorgeous! Nice views of the ocean, the bridge, Caste Hills back yard area. You can sit on a bench, you can go down to the rocks, so many options, so many trails. Its such a fun experience to get up close to a light house by the water. I had boats honking their horns at us as we waved to them.
ELOCIN R — Google review
Incredible views. Couldn’t believe parking was free. As one other reviewer suggested, follow the path across the street to get there. We witnessed breathtaking views, a proposal (hope she said yes) and even got face to face with a young buck on our way back to the parking lot.

Cool little lighthouse. You take the trail across from the parking lot next to the little marina where the coast guard boat is. The trail is marked and not too long ( about 1/4 mile). At the end are some large rocks and the lighthouse. Can't go in, but you can take the steps down right up to it. Great view of the bridge and inlet. Nice view.

Castle Hill Lighthouse is absolutely worth the visit. It takes a short walk to get there, and parking can be a bit tricky since it’s near private property, but the views make it completely worthwhile. Was visiting Newport from NY and went to Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Co. on Sunday for our first time. Everything was incredible from the beer and spirits to the service and the space itself was awesome. And we got a great Wallys burger and hot dog to try too. We brought our dog and sat outside on the upper level and saw an amazing sunset overlooking the bridge. It’s also a great place for a football Sunday since they had all of the games playing. Would highly recommend checking it out and getting a beer flight or cocktail and then also getting some beer and a bottle to bring home with you. Shoutout to Sarah and all of the staff for being so great and welcoming with us and our dog!

This was recommended to us by a local, and it was a fun spot. The building is modern and nice and has so many tables, and then when you go outside, you see the water view and we got to see the beautiful sunset. Because it is a brewery and distillery, they have beer on tap and also specialty cocktails. We were glad we got to experience this place while visiting Newport!

Newport Craft is one of my absolute favorite breweries in Rhode Island, and they made our rehearsal dinner and welcome drinks truly unforgettable. The rooftop deck offered immaculate views of Newport, the bar was flowing all night, and their cocktails and beers were 10/10. From start to finish, we felt taken care of and our guests had an amazing experience. Belcourt of Newport is a grand mansion built in 1894 in the Châteauesque style, designed by Richard Morris Hunt for wealthy bachelor Oliver H. P. Belmont. The current owner, Carolyn Rafaelian, has been working on restoring the mansion using eco-friendly methods like solar panels and thermal-heating-and-cooling systems. The estate was even chosen as Jennifer Lawrence's wedding venue in 2019.
Belcourt is by far the most enigmatic of the Newport mansions with a most fascinating history — it was owner occupied until little more than a decade ago. It is a definite must-see; I am biased, of course, as I used to reside there under the previous ownership. The present staff there, led by David, offer a very interesting tour of the house and their offerings include candlelight and ghost tours. The house is still under some restoration so it is also an interesting opportunity to see what goes into keeping up one of these great houses.

This was a fun experience. The candlelit tour is filled with interesting tidbits and stories. Our guide was well-informed and engaging. The house is in very good shape and a joy to walk through. Perhaps to aid the imagination, laminated photos of the house from the Guilded Age could be made available.

I have been to all of the Newport mansions and find Belcourt among the most interesting. Far less regal than the other Gilded Age mansions and more interesting more recent history. The tour guide was phenomenal and made our hour+ tour feel very personalized. Really so much fun. Make sure you sit in the “haunted chair” if given the opportunity!!

Very nice tour. Thoroughly enjoyed learning the history of the house.
Suwanna A — Google review
It was a very interesting tour and history of the Belcourt. The young man giving the tour was enthusiastic and willing to answer any questions. He will explain why there wasn't a lot of period furniture. Due to this I only gave it a 4 star because some of it was distracting like a custom motorcycle right as you walk into one of the beautiful rooms. It and some of the more eclectic pieces would have been better suited for the big room where you enter. Also posters on the walls instead of vintage art. Interesting to see anyway. Plenty of parking on site.

The meeting house offers insights into the history of the Quakers, once a dominant religious group in Newport colony. With its plain interior and wooden benches, it provides a unique setting for events such as concerts.

Saw an Invoke concert here. The acoustics are OK, not great. The structure itself is barn like. This is the oldest Quaker meeting house in the US. The Quakers believed in simplicity, this structure is an illustration of that. It's a big shack, it's surprising that it's been able to survive since 1699.

VERY good food. We walked in on a Saturday around 6pm and had a 35 min wait for a party of 3. There are plenty of stores to walk around nearby while you wait for the text that your table is ready, The Golden BBQ Burger was amazing. We also got machacha nachos and short rib sandwich and they were good too. The service was good, the atmosphere was nice because it was a bit more low key but still great food and lots of decorations.

Newport is a happy place for my wife and I. Brick Alley is a must-visit restaurant when in town. This trip we were a party of four. Absolutely enthralling decor and always excellent service. I put a picture of all that was ordered although I can not name them all. I had the salmon which was delicious but looked a little lonely as served. If there was any shortcoming at all I would say that the menu is a bit limited. Take a look 👀 online and make sure that they have what you like. If you do visit I am sure that you will enjoy the experience. Your mileage may vary.

We stumbled upon The Brick Alley Pub thanks to a great recommendation from our trolley driver, Rob—and what a find! This place is bursting with eclectic charm, packed with fun antique memorabilia on every wall. It’s like walking into a cozy museum-meets-pub—there’s something to admire in every corner. The bar area is separated so perfect if you have small Kids too! Despite being pressed for time (we had a return water taxi scheduled for our cruise), our server was incredibly accommodating. We let her know we had only an hour, and she made sure everything was smooth and efficient without making us feel rushed. We started with their famous beef nachos, which were absolutely delicious—layers of crispy chips, melted cheese, and perfectly seasoned beef. My friends opted for the all-you-can-eat salad bar, which was impressively stocked with a huge variety of fresh toppings, dressings, and sides. A true salad-lover’s dream! I ordered their award-winning Lobster Salad Sandwich, served cold as recommended. It did not disappoint—light, flavorful, and loaded with fresh lobster meat. It came with classic coleslaw and a side of sweet potato fries, which were perfectly crispy and just the right amount of sweet. Before heading out, we also grabbed a few tee-shirts for our husbands—a fun way to support local businesses and take home something memorable. Little souvenirs like that always make vacations last just a bit longer when you’re back home. If you’re in Newport and looking for a spot that’s full of personality, local flavor, fantastic bar area and great food, I highly recommend stopping in at The Brick Alley Pub. It’s now one of my favorite hidden gems from the trip!

White Horse Tavern, dating back to 1673, is the oldest and possibly most haunted tavern in America. It has served as a courthouse, meeting place for various groups, and a private residence. The historic setting features creaky wide-plank floors, original beams, glowing sconces, and multiple hearths that create an atmosphere reminiscent of its early days. Visitors can dine in the main dining room or on the second floor with views worth navigating the narrow staircase for.
Scotch eggs were about as flavorful and perfectly cooked as you can expect. Clam chowder was excellent. We also ordered endive salad blackened sword fish and beef Wellington. Bread pudding and candy bar rounded out the meal. Smokey Old fashioned to start. Everything was impeccably prepared. Best meal we had for this trip. Service was warm and attentive.

We visited here from out of state with high expectations. Every single one of them was exceeded. Good wine selection and great service. Make sure you make a reservation! The dress code is clearly unenforced but perhaps it varies depending on different times of the night or who is hosting. My preference is just to commit to one of them, either drop the dress code or enforce it. Include a note with the reservation, & put up a sign outside so it is harder to claim ignorance regarding the website info. The field greens had an exquisite minty + turmeric taste with candied nuts and it was a perfect appetizer! The lobster ravioli and lobster bisque are similar so make sure you want them both if ordering both. The duck legs were crispy on the outside and they were so good! Would recommend going early so you can park in their free parking lot, I’m sure it gets full. One of the dining rooms is upstairs so be sure to request what you need in advance.

The best dishes were the Brussels sprouts aide dish- must have! Also the dessert mousse was amazing!! The duck chicken and steak were 7/10.

I will just say - when George Washington walked into this tavern, it was already 100 years old! If that isn’t enough to pique your curiosity and your desire to visit this iconic restaurant, then let me tempt you further. The wine selection is impressive; the food (don’t miss the Beef Wellington) is delicious; and the service is impeccable!. Still not convinced? The staff is welcoming and gracious - and the bartender pours the perfect Rusty Nail! Still need more? Our reservations kept changing (our fault - NOT theirs) - but Bill and Ryan were superb and accommodating. We were celebrating a birthday - and the owners of the Golden Steer Las Vegas were in our party (no pressure 🙃). It could not have been a more exciting or grander memory! If you have not dined at the White Horse Tavern, then it’s high time you did. You will not be disappointed - and who knows? … you may just walk in George’s exact footsteps!

Full moon on a Friday and lucky me there was a table near the bar. Beef Wellington was superb, see pics and the wine was outstanding. Great hostess and bartender. Efficient, friendly and scrumptious. So glad I made the walk from my air bnb! Thank you for graciously welcoming me from Nashville!

The food was delicious! We ordered the lobster ravioli, scallops, oysters, and lobster soup. The portions were generous and everything tasted great. The ravioli were especially amazing, served with a rich sauce that included extra lobster and shrimp. My mother-in-law loved the Nespresso martini with Baileys, which we highly recommend as well.

We thoroughly enjoyed our food! Our waiter was also very kind and took good care of us. I really like the atmosphere of the old tavern.

The house/restaurant is super cute. It’s white table, but doesn’t need to be. The food and service do not match the vibe. The scotch egg was delish. The clam chowder was simple but lacked salt and pepper. I had a chicken dish that was rather bland. The veggie plate was nothing to write home about. Very simple and basic. Our waitress was not attentive. She told us the specials and walked away—we were ready to order by that time. She was covering at least 5 tables. Again, doesn’t match the fine(r) dining vibe. We had to ask the food runner for more to drinks because it was completely out. I would not recommend this place.

St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Newport, Rhode Island, holds a significant place in history as the oldest Roman Catholic church in the state. Built in 1848 to accommodate the influx of Irish-Catholic immigrants drawn by job opportunities during the construction of Fort Adams and nearby coal mines, it has witnessed many notable events. During the Civil War, it served as a chapel for the naval academy and gained further prominence as the venue for John F.
Wife wanted to see it because it was where John Kennedy was married but I enjoyed it more for the architecture. Church is immaculately maintained and in beautiful condition for it's age. Free to see but only open 10:00-2:00 on weekdays.

JFK got married here! Pleasant staff/volunteers. They accomodated my simple request of praying inside during my 30th birthday even if they havent opened yet. See images for further reference
Nico S — Google review
Every year on Sept 12 they have a free video of JFK & Jacqueline Kennedy. They also help feed the local community homeless people with offerings you give. Inside the chapel are beautiful stain glass windows.

I attended the service here, it was beautiful. The church can hold 700 - 800 people at a time. Very beautiful and a part of Newport's history.

⛪Beautiful Architecture, Rich History, Welcoming Staff⛪ The oldest Parrish in the Diocese of Providence, St. Mary's was designated a National Historic Shrine on November 24, 1968. It is known among other things as the marriage place of JFK. If you love touring cathedrals and churches, St. Mary's is a must-see. The interior is gorgeous, and I've tried to capture the splendor with my camera. Of course, nothing compares to seeing it in person! The staff onsite are friendly, informative, and welcoming. They answered my questions and provided a place for me to leave my beverage while I went inside. I'd highly recommend the experience to everyone.

One of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. To stand where the future President John F Kennedy stood as his bride Jacqueline walked down the aisle was awesome.
Michael S — Google review
Trivia question: When she remarried, she was Jacqueline Onassis. But before she married JFK, what was her maiden name? JFK and Jackie were married here on September 12, 1953. This Gothic Revival church is Rhode Island's oldest Catholic parish as it was founded in 1828. The ceremony was officiated by Archbishop Richard Cushing of Boston, with a special blessing read from Pope Pius XII. It was built between 1848 and 1852, the church reflects both the aspirations of Newport's growing Catholic community and the stylistic preferences of the era. The building's exterior is defined by its massive, rough-cut brownstone walls, which give it a sense of permanence and gravity. A steeply pitched roof and soaring steeple rise above Spring Street, creating a vertical emphasis typical of Gothic design. The sculptural entrance, with its pointed arch and recessed doorway, reaches out to the street in a gesture both welcoming and monumental.

Beautiful church with very unique history. Some of that history was that a president was married here. John F. Kennedy was married here a long time ago. I would definitely recommend checking this place out.

Mysterious Sites
The Newport Windmill Tower is a fascinating historical site in Newport, shrouded in mystery and debate about its origins. Some believe it was built by Vikings, while others argue it may have been constructed by Portuguese or Chinese settlers. There are even theories about ancient alien involvement. The stone structure dates back to before 1620 and offers a serene spot for contemplation.
When I think of Newport, I think of the Newport Tower and the Mansions. I don’t think it’s possible to appreciate Newport without reflecting upon who built this tower, when, and why? There’s really one one theory that makes sense and it’s “Universe Denting” 😁
Brian — Google review
The Newport Windmill Tower is a hidden gem and definitely worth a visit! Whether you're into history, architecture, or just looking for a unique spot with a view, this place delivers. The tower itself is beautifully preserved, and walking around it gives you a sense of Rhode Island's colonial past. It’s peaceful, scenic, and a great stop if you’re exploring Newport. Take a few minutes to soak in the surroundings — it’s a cool mix of history and charm. A quick but memorable stop on the way through town!
Joseph B — Google review
in 2014 on my way to outside Boston Mass for a project, I made sure to make a detour to stop here and see/photograph this historic structure. I found it very interesting, I just wish I had longer to check it out. Maybe I will go back if up in that part of the country

Beautiful park with great historical landmarks. The Stone Tower is incredible, and so is the statue of Commodore Matthew Perry
Jared C — Google review
If you're walking Touro Park, you can't miss the Newport Tower. Pleasantly symmetrical, it towers tall at one end of the park. It's also known as the Old Stone Mill and used to be part of a 17-century windmill. Thus, it holds interest both to architects and historians. It's free to walk Touro Park, so be sure to check it out during your stroll!
Casey — Google review
It's in a nice park but not all that impressive
John D — Google review
The Newport Tower is a nice little tower in the middle of a nice little park. At first glance it appears to to be a simple tower in a park, some claim that this tower has a much more complex history. There have been TV shows that have made the claim that the tower was built by the Knights Templar. This unsubstantiated, but if you are in Newport stop by and take a look this visit the quaint surrounding town.
Allen T — Google review
Beautiful early settler stone structure. May be older than 1620 based on the construction. Before all the houses were built (1640-1940) there was most likely a clear view to the bay. Placard in park states it’s dedicated to “Channing” the man who established the Unitarian Church, which is located across the street from the stone tower. Other history says it was in Benedict Arnold’s back yard and part of his property, which is now the park. Park and stone tower are beautiful are located in a quiet section of Historic Newport on Pelham Street.
