Churches & Cathedrals
St. Mary's Church, situated on Grand Street in Negombo, is a stunning Roman Catholic cathedral with a columned blue-and-white facade and vibrant paintings adorning its interior. Constructed between 1874 and 1922, the church showcases neoclassical architecture adorned with alabaster images of saints on the roof and religious sculptures on the walls.
Simply the most beautiful church I have ever been to, you have to visit to believe in the aura and beauty that lies within the glorified walls that illustrate the struggle of Jesus, gorgeous roof paintings of Mother Mary and a peacefully static benches. On the outside the fresh colors on the walls give it a very colonial feel and a treat to sore eyes.

We visited St. Mary’s Church in Negombo for the first time in May 2025, and it was such a peaceful and memorable experience. The church is absolutely beautiful, with stunning architecture, detailed paintings, and a calming atmosphere that invites quiet reflection. Even as first-time visitors, we felt truly welcome. It’s not only a place of worship but also a wonderful spot to appreciate Negombo’s history and culture. If you’re visiting the area, we definitely recommend stopping by,whether for prayer, reflection, or simply to admire the beauty of this spiritual and historical landmark.
Shanuka R — Google review
The 151st yearly church feast of St. Mary's Church in Negombo was a truly magnificent and memorable event, a testament to the enduring faith and rich cultural heritage of the community. As one of Sri Lanka's oldest and most revered churches, the venue itself is a masterpiece, with its awe-inspiring interior. The detailed, intricate paintings adorning the roof and the beautifully crafted statues create a serene and majestic atmosphere, adding a profound sense of history to the celebrations. The feast day was a vibrant display of devotion and communal spirit. A highlight was the grand parade, where the faithful gathered in a beautiful procession. It was a colorful and moving spectacle that showcased the deep reverence held for St. Mary, bringing together generations in a shared expression of faith. Beyond its religious significance, the event served as a powerful reminder of the church's role as a cornerstone of the Negombo community. The feast was a perfect blend of tradition, artistry, and communal joy, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
Vinothan B — Google review
St. Mary’s Church in Negombo is one of the city’s most iconic and easily accessible landmarks. Located right in the heart of town, it’s very easy to reach by foot, car, or tuk-tuk, with plenty of parking and small shops around. The church itself is truly majestic, with a grand façade, high ceilings, and beautifully painted interiors that immediately catch the eye. Its artwork, stained glass, and statues create a serene and uplifting atmosphere perfect for reflection or prayer. Facilities for visitors are well maintained. The grounds are clean and orderly, and there’s enough space to sit, rest, or take photos respectfully. Washrooms and small refreshment spots nearby make it convenient for those traveling with families. Despite being a popular stop for tourists, the church retains its religious significance, and services are held regularly. Whether you’re visiting for spiritual reasons or simply to appreciate its architecture, St. Mary’s Church offers a peaceful escape in the middle of bustling Negombo. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in Sri Lanka’s Catholic heritage, and it stands out as one of the cleanest and most impressive places of worship in the area.

More than a year after my first visit, I went to St Mary's this morning. A fresh paint job has managed to give the church a very different look. The colors are brighter and the church looks wonderful on the outside. The inside is little changed. It's worth going back to this church, even if you've seen it before. See the new pictures and the new colors to appreciate the difference. St Mary's church was built in the 19th century. Keeping in mind that this church was built in a country where Christianity is a small minority, the church is an impressive structure. Visit it with an open mind and don't compare it to the churches in Europe or Latin America. If you do, you will fail to enjoy your visit.
Georges Y — Google review
The church is in good shape and frequented by foreigners. Interior is impressive and well Maintained. Entrance is free. In front the church there is a nice parking lot. It is an active church so observe all the requirements.

Anglican church
St. Stephen's Church in Negombo is an Anglican church with a rich history dating back to the British colonial era. The church, consecrated in 1880, stands on the grounds of the former Dutch Fort and features Gothic Revival architecture with numerous arched windows that fill its interior with natural light.
Very well attended Sinhalese service at 8am. English service starts at 10am but not so well attended. There were only 6 people minus the folks serving in the service. 2 are foreigners and 4 locals who came very late for the service. Check out the service times in the picture for more info. Church is just beside the Dutch Fort.

Kumar N — Google review
Very well maintained church. Worth a visit!
Luke W — Google review
This beautiful and quaint old church lies adjacent to the Negombo lagoon and the ruined rampart of the ancient Dutch Fort and carries an equally unique history in itself. It's an Anglican church completed in 1877 when Sri Lanka was under British rule and consecrated on 31st July 1880. The church is indeed a beautiful example of the Gothic revival architectural style. A stone cross of small size is fixed on each tiled ridge at the top and the north transcept has a vestry and a bellfry added later. This church is perfectly preserved and is active upto date since it's consecration. The calm and peaceful location steeped in history adds grace and beauty to the city of Negombo.

The Angurukaramulla Temple, also known as Bodhirajaramaya, is a vibrant and historic Buddhist temple located in Negombo. It is one of the oldest temples in the area and is renowned for its colorful artistry and rich history. The entrance, designed to resemble a lion's mouth, leads to a striking 6-meter long Buddha statue surrounded by ornate sculptures and ancient murals.
The Argurukaramulla Temple, located in Negombo, Sri Lanka, is a prominent Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Situated near the coast, it is an important place of worship for the Tamil Hindu community in the region. The temple features traditional South Indian Dravidian architecture, with intricate carvings and vibrant sculptures depicting various Hindu deities. Devotees visit the temple to seek blessings for prosperity, health, and success. The temple also plays a key role in local festivals, particularly during Tamil religious celebrations. Its tranquil atmosphere and cultural significance make it a key landmark in Negombo.
Prabhakar T — Google review
Beautiful and roomy place. Many incidents from the life of Lord Buddha are illustrated through paintings and statues. You can also see vivid depictions of how evil people are punished in hell (අපාය). Additionally, there are statues and printed details of ancient Sri Lankan kings, including their birth years and reign periods.
Little C — Google review
This is a very large Buddhist temple located in a predominantly Catholic area. Its main attraction is the large Buddha Statue. Its placement is unique and attractive. The other buildings are just ordinary.
Sydney R — Google review
I've been to Angurukaramulla Temple when I was a child with my parents. They illustrate how the hell looks like. When I went to the temple as a grown up last week, I noticed the way how a list of all the ancient kings and queens of Ceylon were illustrated up to the recent British colonial time indicating the period they ruled and kingdom they belonged to. I was really fascinated by this building. The other interesting fact was the way the buduras of some Buddha status were illustrated in 3D form. It looks like tourists are brought in to this temple by a few three wheel drivers.
Kumudu S — Google review
Probably the nicest temple to visit in Negombo. It's got a lot of impressive art and statues, is well kept too. Also has a section about hell which was unique to say the least. Only downside is that you require to purchase a brochure and will be guided along throughout the grounds. Entrance fee is about 1000 rupees per person if I remember correctly. The guide will rush you a bit, as was in our case which is not that great..but it was still worth seeing.
Florian K — Google review
A beautiful temple with a large Buddha statue and a peaceful atmosphere. The people here are very kind and respectful. A lovely place to visit and feel calm.

The temple is very nice and colorful. The guide explained me many things and through a donation you can get a small book that tells you about the Buddha’s life.

Largest and most beautiful Buddhist temple in Negombo town. There are many beautiful Buddhist statues and artworks inside the temple. It situated a bit away from the urban area but walking distance from the town. It's worth visiting this place since there were not many landmarks around the negomb to travel with.

Nature & Parks
Negombo Beach in Sri Lanka has a rich history shaped by foreign visitors, including the Portuguese and Dutch. The town's cosmopolitan past is evident in its imposing churches and Catholic shrines. The Dutch established it as a commercial center, with a canal for transporting valuable spices like cinnamon to the coast. Today, Negombo Beach offers picturesque views of sailing boats under the sunset glow and opportunities to experience local fishing traditions.
Negombo Beach is a beautiful and peaceful spot, perfect for watching stunning sunsets and taking long morning walks. When conditions allow, swimming in the Indian Ocean is a real pleasure. Watching the local fishermen at work adds to the authentic atmosphere. A must-do experience is taking a catamaran trip to catch shrimp – truly unique and unforgettable.
Kasia Z — Google review
Beach in Negombo is pretty straight and popular for both tourists and locals, offering a number of activities such as kite surfing, sailing, windsurfing and jet skiing. Lots of fishermen are hunting the foreshore area for prawns and small fish in their pretty boats. A number of hotels and restaurants are along the beachfront. Lots of walking along beach, need hat and sunscreen. Careful of traders selling wares that can be bought cheaper elsewhere.
S V — Google review
Negombo Beach is very beautiful and stretches across a large area. However, plastic can be seen in many places. Today, a lot of jellyfish were seen washed up on the beach . Vehicles can go right onto the beach. It’s not suitable for swimming. During the daytime, the sun is very strong. You can see many boats in the sea, and there are also fishermen drying fish on the beach.

Relaxing Beach with Beautiful Sunset.... Negombo Beach is calm, clean, and perfect for a peaceful walk. The golden sand, gentle waves, and stunning sunset views make it a great spot to relax. Plenty of local cafes and seafood restaurants nearby add to the charm.

A spot where the local youth, families and tourists come together to watch the sunset, when we visited. It was a Poya Monday, so everyone was in festive spirits, and still dressed up from their holiday festivities it seemed. Attention to all: take your trash home!
Paula — Google review
Negombo Beach is a stunning stretch of golden sand on Sri Lanka’s west coast and one of the most enjoyable spots to relax by the sea. The beach has a lively yet laid-back vibe, perfect for swimming, walking along the shore, or simply soaking up the sun. You’ll often see colorful fishing boats nearby, adding to its coastal charm and giving a glimpse into local life. The sunsets here are absolutely breathtaking, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes along the beachfront serving delicious seafood. A visit to Negombo Beach is always refreshing as it's a great place to unwind and experience the vibrant seaside spirit of Sri Lanka!

Fortress
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Negombo Dutch Fort is a historical site that reflects the colonial influence of the Portuguese and Dutch in the 17th and 18th centuries. The fort's ancient ruins, including a fine gateway with an inscription dating back to 1978, offer visitors a glimpse into Sri Lanka's colonial era. The area also features old Dutch houses, Portuguese churches, and the Hamilton Dutch Canal, which was developed by the Dutch and covers approximately 130 kilometers from Puttalam to Colombo.
Negombo Dutch Fort is a site with historical significance, but there isn’t much to see beyond the remnants of the old gate and walls. While it holds some colonial history, the fort itself is quite small and now serves as part of a prison, limiting access for visitors. That said, if you’re in the area, it’s worth a quick stop to appreciate the architecture and the past it represents. However, if you’re expecting a grand fort with lots to explore, you might be disappointed. A brief visit combined with a walk along the nearby lagoon would make for a more fulfilling experience.
Dhanuka P — Google review
Negombo Dutch Fort is a interesting historical site. The old walls and ramparts give a glimpse of the past. It's a peaceful place for a walk and some photos. A good spot enjoy the outdoor atmosphere. The fort is well-preserved and worth visiting for history lovers.
Melanie W — Google review
It was captured by Dutch forces commanded by Philip Lucasz, in February 1640.[1] The Portuguese made several attempts to retake it before they were successful in December 1643. They then strengthened the fortifications and managed to defend the fort until it was recaptured by the Dutch under the command of François Caron, in January 1644. The original bastions were destroyed by the Dutch cannons during the siege of the fort. The Dutch subsequently rebuilt it in 1672 however not on the usual square pattern, but on a pentagonal one, though it had only four bulwarks, the fifth was never constructed (possibly due to the cost).[3] The fort was located on a narrow strip of land between a lagoon and an inlet of the sea. It was surrounded by a dry moat, and the gate was accessed via a drawbridge. In February 1796 it was occupied by the British without opposition.[1] In the late 1800s the British authorities decided to demolish the fort and build a prison in its place, constructed from the stones of the fort.[1] Today all that remains is a section of the eastern rampart with mounds at its northern and Southern ends, where the previous bastions existed, and a recessed arched gateway. Above the gateway is a slab of granite, with the date 1678 inscribed, surmounted by a high decorative gable.[1] The site is still used as a prison by the Department of Prisons
Sameera S — Google review
Portuguese built this small but important fort m in Negombo to defend Colombo which now serve as prison for ur Srilanka on the bank of sea. There is not much to see there at the moment so if you are going out to see the for specially then I suggest don’t go.
Abdul M — Google review
Located literally next to Negombo Prison. With no doubt back in the days, it used to be a big thing, unfortunately it hasn’t been kept in the same condition as it was ages ago. Fun fact, there was a guy in the fort selling ices cream, everyone who was buying ice cream from him, were coming from seeing their family members/friends/close relatives from the prison. It’s definitely a positive departure.
Mike T — Google review
The Dutch Fort in Negombo is a fascinating piece of Sri Lanka's colonial history. Originally built during the Dutch ruling period, this small but significant fort stands as a reminder of the European influence on the island. While not as large as some other forts in Sri Lanka, it still holds great historical value and is worth a visit for anyone interested in the country’s past. The surrounding area near the lagoon adds a peaceful atmosphere, and you can even explore the nearby Dutch-era buildings, including the old prison and the beautiful St. Mary's Church. Although part of the fort is now used by the local authorities and not fully open to the public, you can still walk around the exterior and appreciate its old stone walls and architectural design. Highly recommended for history lovers, photographers, or anyone exploring the cultural heritage of Negombo.
Pubudu J — Google review
All the above is true, it’s filthy and rundown and Tuk Tuk drivers might come around seeking a fare. There is lots of garbage stuck against fences. But hey it’s so Lanka with an interesting fish smelling port. It’s free!

Negombo Lagoon is a sprawling 13.5-square-mile expanse featuring mangrove and paddy fields, renowned for its diverse bird population as well as fishing and farming activities. The coastal wetland ecosystem, covering an area of 6232 square meters, is situated on the west coast of Sri Lanka and serves as a vital center for marine fisheries.
Flanked by a string of colourful boats on one side and marshy islands on another side which eventually leads to the open sea. It is worth exploring on a boat trip with small strips of land also called as sand spit where you can stop by and soak in the pleasant seas with a sip of your favourite beverage. Don't forget to carry a bunch of bananas for a small island full of mischievous monkeys.

Negombo Lagoon is one of the most productive estuaries in Sri Lanka. It is 12 km in length from south to north and 3.75 km at its widest point (Fig. 1). The mean depth of the lagoon is about 1.2 m. The greatest recorded water depth is 2.6 m but 10% of the lagoon has a water depth of less than 0.5 m (Fig. 2). The lagoon covers an area of approximately 32 km2 and opens to the sea at its northern end. To the south, it is connected to the Muthurajawela marsh which covers an area of approximately 31 km2 and together the lagoon and marsh constitute a conjoined, tidally influenced coastal wetland. The main fresh water input comes from the rivers Dandugam Oya and Ja-ela but the lagoon is characterized by a brackish water flora (seaweeds) and some mangrove forests in the northern part.

Nice place, but the beach was not clean due to garbage like plastics and empty bottles, etc. Parking on this area is difficult. Access road is also narrow. Small private car park, run 100m away from Pitipana side was found. 8 vehicles can be parked in it.

A Serene Hidden Gem in Negombo – Morawala Beach Morawala Beach in Negombo is truly a hidden treasure for sea lovers. I often find myself drawn to this peaceful spot for a refreshing sea bath. What makes this place unique is the natural cliff that stretches across the sea, calming the waves and making the waters safe and gentle near the shore. The water depth is generally around hip level, making it an ideal and secure spot for kids and adults alike to enjoy a relaxed swim. I personally love going early in the morning to witness the sunrise—it’s a divine experience to watch the sun rise while being embraced by the gentle sea. A perfect place to rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul. I highly recommend this spot for solo retreats or family getaways—but kindly urge everyone to help keep this sanctuary clean and beautiful for all who come after.😇❤️🧬

An honest review: the beach is very dirty, brown and smells bad. Has trash all around and the entrance is a bit hidden. I can't get why people enjoyed. Maybe you can have an average sunset nothing compared to south Sri Lanka, the only part that the water was still clean.

Morawala Beach in Negombo is a small but stunning spot, perfect for those who enjoy calm and quiet coastal vibes. It’s not as crowded as other beaches in the area, making it ideal for peaceful evening strolls or watching the sunset. The natural rock formation (the "Morawala") acts like a barrier, so the water near the shore stays relatively calm—great for kids and casual swimmers. The views are breathtaking, especially at sunset when the sky lights up with vibrant colors. It’s a favorite among locals, with a relaxed atmosphere and a few food stalls nearby. Not overly commercialized, which adds to its charm. A great place to unwind and enjoy the beauty of Sri Lanka’s coastline.

Hindu temple
Sri Singama Kali Amman Kovil, situated in Negombo, is a Hindu religious site dedicated to the revered Hindu God Ganesh. This temple is known for its beautiful and airy central sanctuary adorned with statues and bas-reliefs of various deities. The temple is a significant place of worship for those seeking blessings before embarking on important endeavors as Ganesh is considered the patron saint of intellectuals, bankers, and writers.
Subject: Dress Code Assistance for Foreign Visitors I am writing to express a suggestion regarding the dress code at the temple, particularly for foreign visitors who may be unfamiliar with the cultural expectations. As you know, proper attire is an important aspect of visiting the temple, and it enhances the experience for everyone. In Bali, many temples provide sarongs and shawls for a minimal charge, which not only helps visitors comply with dress codes but also supports the temple's upkeep. I kindly request that you consider implementing a similar practice at our temple. This would greatly assist foreign visitors in adhering to the dress code and create a more welcoming environment. A simple sign at the entrance may not fully convey the importance of appropriate attire, and providing attire options would certainly enrich their visit and create cherished memories. Thank you for considering this suggestion. I truly appreciate your efforts in maintaining the temple's traditions and enhancing the experience for all visitors. Warm regards,

International airport
Bandaranaike International Airport, located near Colombo, is a modern airport with numerous duty-free shops offering a wide range of products including electronics and appliances. Just 10 km away lies Negombo, a serene coastal town known for its picturesque beaches and commercial significance. It's only a 20-minute drive from the airport, making it a preferred arrival or departure point compared to the hour-long journey to Colombo city.
A lot of changes have occurred. In the immigration area, Sri Lankan Passport holders can now register for e-immigration, where they can first register and then complete the process. So then an officer will only stamp after everything is done by the citizen. Easier for Sri Lankans. Thank you for that move. Plus, a new self-check-in area is made for all flying Sri Lankan Airlines. Once again, a good step so passengers flying Sri Lankan Airlines will have less hassle and can self-check in. The only downside is that the food is kind of expensive. So, for passengers, eat well before coming 🤭. The Airport is very clean and tidy. Seating good. Plus, there is good and enough seating available in the required areas. Which is good. It is said that new constructions are on the way. Let's see how things roll. Good if we can make another runway (which is said to be planned as well), which will help navigate the air traffic better with minimum delays😌✨️. Whatsoever, at the end, my motherland ✨️😌.
A. A — Google review
After all it’s my home country , Thought sharing my honest feedback 😉. generally a smooth and pleasant experience always here. The airport is compact, clean, and well-maintained, with helpful and courteous staff who made navigation through check-in and security quick and simple—sometimes even more efficient than airports in the UK. There’s a good selection of duty-free shops, cafes, and lounges, though prices are a bit steep. Wi-Fi and lighting were hit or miss in some areas, and seating can be limited when it gets busy. Overall, CMB offers a welcoming and reasonably comfortable experience—just be ready for queues, higher-than-average prices, and bring your own snacks or anticipation for rest areas.
Sharanyan S — Google review
I had a pleasant experience at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo. The check-in process was surprisingly efficient and quick, even during a busy morning period, which made navigating the terminal a breeze. The staff were cooperative and helpful, aligning with the warm hospitality I experienced at places like Shangri-La Colombo and One Galle Face Mall during my trip. The airport’s infrastructure is basic but well-designed, with a compact layout that’s easy to navigate, especially for transit passengers. The contemporary design with Sri Lankan cultural motifs adds a nice touch, though it feels a bit outdated in parts. There are various dining options, from fast food like Burger King to local Sri Lankan dishes at places like Palm Strip Restaurant. However, prices are steep, expect to pay ~$12-$15 for a meal, which is high for the region. My main gripe was the limited shopping options. The duty-free zone focuses heavily on electronics, which isn’t ideal for tourists. I was specifically looking for a Lotus Tower souvenir to commemorate my visit to Colombo, but the only option was an expensive glass-covered model that felt overpriced for what it was. Also, I couldn’t find a bookstore, which was disappointing. Overall, CMB is a functional airport with efficient check-in and a decent atmosphere, but the lack of diverse shops and affordable souvenirs holds it back. Fine for a quick transit, but don’t expect a robust shopping experience.
B-raj P — Google review
The main airport in Sri Lanka. Caters almost all international flights to and from country. Situated away from the capital Colombo can travel by highway in around 45 minutes. Airport is having one terminal with multiple gates for boarding and landing. It has basic infrastructure to carter a large number of passengers. Yet, there’s almost always a rush. The staff is good, friendly and efficient but may be workload is high. The airport can be more developed and modernized to avoid the rush. It doesn’t provide strollers for kids but have wheelchairs and special assistance for disabled passengers.
Kalana P — Google review
I am working in Thailand and usually travel from Trichy to Thailand with a transit at Colombo Airport. The transit experience is always very comfortable, and I really appreciate SriLankan Airlines for their excellent service. Mobile charging points are available, but Thailand-type adapters are not supported at the airport. The food and tea shops are good, and there are plenty of shops inside the terminal. Drinking water is also easily available along the way. Overall, it’s a very convenient airport for Indian travelers. I have transited through this airport many times — it offers many flight options to major destinations across India. The facilities are excellent, the service is great, and the staff are always friendly and helpful.
SARAVANAKUMAR J — Google review
Overall, it was a pretty decent. The airport felt organized and easy to get around, and the staff were genuinely friendly and welcoming — that warm Sri Lankan hospitality really shows. From check-in to baggage claim, everyone was polite and helpful, which made the journey smoother. That said, there were a few downsides. Immigration took quite a while since there were very few officers on duty, and the queues were long. The washrooms also need a bit more attention in terms of cleanliness and maintenance. All in all, it’s a nice airport with a great atmosphere — just wish the immigration process and facilities were a bit better managed.
Azmi S — Google review
Sri Lanka’s main international airport is quite a busy place, so it’s best to arrive at least three hours before your flight. There are porters available to help you with your luggage, but please note that it’s a paid service. You can simply carry your own bags if you prefer, although you’ll need to handle your luggage at a few different checkpoints (around 2–3 times) yourself. Only passengers are allowed to enter the airport. If anyone else wants to go inside, they need to buy an entry ticket, which is around 500 LKR. Even then, they can only go a little past the entrance – so it’s really not necessary. Inside the terminal, there are a few shops, food outlets, banks, and even a small supermarket. The toilets are clean, and the general facilities are well maintained. Once you check in and go to the second floor, you’ll find many branded stores, duty-free shops, and several nice cafés. I also noticed that they recently added a special area for monks which is a thoughtful initiative. Overall, the airport is functional, clean, and managed well.
Chaami S — Google review
This airport is quite small, and I had to spend almost 8 hours here during a night transit. Honestly, it was not very comfortable because there aren’t many places where you can really rest or lie down. The seating is limited and not designed for long waits. Food options in the transit area are also very limited, especially late at night, so it’s better to bring something with you if you know you’ll be staying for a while. On a positive note, I noticed that the toilets have improved compared to my last visit about 5 years ago—they are cleaner and better maintained now. There are sleeping pods available, but the price is extremely high, which makes them not really worth it for most travelers. Overall, the airport is fine for short layovers, but for long transits—especially overnight—it’s quite challenging.

The Duwa passion play has a full-day programme on Good Friday. It could be the oldest and the best known Catholic pageant in Sri Lanka, coming down from generation to generation with well-preserved traditions. The Duwa passion play, with a history of around 400 years, carries a legend, too. The astonishing miraculous statue of Christ formed the centerpiece of the Passion of Christ in Duwa during the last 150 to 175 years. In the original form, the play was enacted with statues alone and it was based on the script by Fr Jacome Gonzalvez. In 1948 when Kalasoori Fr Merciline Jayakody became the parish priest, Church of Our Lady of Good Voyage, Duwa, he introduced a new script and humans, instead of statues, for most of the cast. At that time the colourful Duwa passion play had over 250 actors, all drawn from the island hamlet of Duwa, and was considered as the greatest Passion shows in Asia.

The Catholic Church St. Sebastian's Church - Sea Street is located in Negombo, Sri Lanka. Built in the neo-Gothic style inspired by France's Reims Cathedral, the church is a popular tourist destination with its beautiful architecture and history. The church is home to a number of miraculous stories, including the story of St. Sebastian who was martyred for his faith. Visitors can visit the church and pray for inspiration and strength.
St Sebastian is the patron of Negombo. Beautiful church No tickets required All visitors should be aware that a church is a place of worship. So please keep quiet when visiting and don’t disturb the worshippers.

One of the most aesthetically pleasing buildings! It really stands out from the road and up close. When we visited, it was St Sebastian’s birthday so the grounds were beautifully decorated with flags and we were told there were 3000 people there the day before to celebrate the occasion! It’s free to enter. A must visit in Negombo!

I visited St. Sebastian’s Church on Sea Street recently and was truly impressed. The church’s striking neo‑Gothic architecture—modeled on France’s Reims Cathedral—is even more breathtaking up close, with its twin spires and graceful arches . Inside, it’s peaceful and reverent, with life-sized Stations of the Cross set among the courtyard gardens—perfect for quiet reflection. the atmosphere was serene and prayerful, though fans provided only occasional relief from the tropical warmth. The grounds were beautifully well-maintained, and there’s genuine warmth from both parishioners and visitors. If you come in January, you might catch the celebrations for the Feast of St. Sebastian, which include colorful flags, a lively procession, and free meals for the community—a true expression of local tradition and generosity . This church is not just a scenic landmark—it’s a central part of Negombo’s identity and spiritual life. It also carries a poignant history from the 2019 Easter attacks, yet today stands as a symbol of resilience and unity .

A beautiful church which is definitely worth visiting. The best one in Negombo in my opinion. I was lucky because on the day of my visit I had an opportunity to see the festival of st. Sebastian and it was such a lovely experience.

Nice Christian church. Didn’t visit inside, only tour bus drove by.

St Sebastian's is a large "neo-Gothic" church on the outskirts of Negombo. The life-sized Stations of the Cross in the garden in front of the church are particularly worth seeing. A must see ?

I visited St. Sebastian’s Church in Negombo during a very difficult time in my life, when I was under immense stress and battling deep depression. Though I belong to a different religion, something drew me toward this beautiful place of worship. The moment I stepped inside the church, I felt an unexplainable sense of peace and divinity. I sat there for a long time, quietly letting my emotions pour out. I cried — not out of weakness, but in release. As the tears flowed, I could feel a weight lifting off my shoulders. It was as if the presence of God was silently speaking to me, comforting me, assuring me that I was not alone. By the time I left, I felt light-headed — not in pain or confusion, but in relief. It was like a burden had been taken off me. My confidence returned, and my heart felt lighter. I truly believe I received a blessing that day. There is something powerful and sacred within the walls of this church that words can’t quite capture. St. Sebastian's Church is not just a beautiful structure; it's a sanctuary where the divine feels close, regardless of your faith. I walked in broken and walked out blessed. For that, I am truly grateful. It was truly a soul healing experience.
