Buddhist temple

Sacred & Religious Sites
Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple, is a contemporary Buddhist temple located in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Designed by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, it features a unique white exterior with intricate designs and unconventional architecture. Inside, visitors can explore unusual murals and decorations along with odd sculptures. The temple aims to provide a space for learning and meditation to promote the teachings of Buddhism.
This was my first time to visit this temple. Make sure you are wearing skirts down to the knee if you go there. The entry was 100B and it is worth it. It is truly unique. It focuses on death a lot in the beginning but changes throughout. The level of artistry is at a great level. Everything is very manicured and beautiful. It has on the temple grounds the most beautiful bathrooms you have ever seen. I recommend checking this temple out.

Absolutely stunning temple, it’s a shame tourists can’t respect the culture though. During our time at the temple we heard the man over the speaker repeatedly tell the same people to cover themselves. They kept removing their coverings to take their insta shots. Honestly, wake up to yourself. If you can’t come to a country and respect the culture, go home. No one wants you here. Obviously there’s going to be people everywhere at tourist attractions. So fine. But don’t be rude and act like you’re the only one there. To get into the temple you have to cross a narrow bridge / walkway. There is a recording telling people not to block this. Sure enough there was a couple on the walkway taking selfies completely blocking the way with total disregard for the 20 - 30 people trying to get across. Until I walked in front of their camera that is. If you’re going to come here, respect the culture and other people or don’t bother because you honestly just look like an absolute flog. P.s. don’t forget there’s more to see here than just the white temple itself.
Julz P — Google review
The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) in Chiang Rai is one of Thailand’s most surreal sights — pure white, shimmering with mirrored glass under the sun. The details feel almost otherworldly, blending Buddhist symbolism with modern art. Photos are allowed outside but not inside, where the murals surprise you with unexpected imagery. Visit early morning to avoid glare and crowds. It’s both art and reflection in one unforgettable stop.
Noel M — Google review
Milling crowds of tourists. Que up for 25 minutes or so. But here is the catch a National Artist from Chiang Rai decided with his own money to create the crystal white of Buddha's Metta: Compassion in his artistic imagination. The Chinese style architecture with embedded glass work give the place a dazzling aura. It is not the temples that he conceived he conceived the whole landscaping. Sky, water, earth, mountains, shrubs and trees! But what surprised me that I did not see too many birds. May be the cacophony of milling crowds daunted them! It's a vast area through which you can leisurely amble enjoying gurgling water, fountains spraying cool comfort, and children really feeling joyous.I saw a senior monk walk out of the monastery building. Besides the use of bridge as a symbol of transiting from mundane materialism to spirituality of loving compassion is very well utilized by the savant artist. The Golden bridge that connects you to a hall where hundreds of Ganesha are created by another artist. The piece de resistance is the white temple that has a full wall Buddha painting. The painting in terms of artistic creation is in line with traditional iconography of Buddha. It is not the interior but the exterior of this building that is stunning with white purity against blue sky, surrounded by liquidity of water and as I said a symbolic bridge connecting the temple to higher realms. When you come out of the main temple and view it from different viewing points that you realise that it is an ethereal ship surrounded by water and changing by changing sun light. For sure sun rise and sun down must be the best time to connect with ethereal glory. Lastly macabre art is also hanging by tree branches.
Vijay K — Google review
Its a beautiful temple for pictures taking. The white colour with chrome trimmed scriptures and building design really stands out especially during the sun light. Was really impressed with the toilet too which was painted in gold. Its gets crowded with Tourists and buses. There were quite a numbers of eateries here hence can dropby for meals too.

Wat Rong Khun (The White Temple) in Chiang Rai feels like stepping into a dream — pure white, mirror details catching the light, and architecture unlike anywhere else. It’s art, spirituality, and imagination blended into one surreal experience. Every corner has symbolism, from the path of life and karma to the bridge toward enlightenment. It’s peaceful, meaningful, and visually stunning — a place that inspires you to slow down and reflect. ✅ Unique modern Buddhist architecture ✅ Stunning details & symbolic design ✅ Beautiful photo spots
Vilaijit T — Google review
The temple itself is very beautiful, with its white surface and embedded mirrors that reflect the sunlight and make the temple shine in the sun. The beautiful atmosphere is a bit disturbed by its popularity and the constant announcements repeated over loudspeaker, telling people to continue walking and not to take pictures within the temple. You can find tons of references to modern pop-culture across the temple grounds. The biggest attraction is probably the entrance, where you can walk over a bridge that is surrounded by a lake of hands reaching out to you.
HikeForHappiness — Google review
The most beautiful and breathtaking temple we visited during our trip to Thailand. The intricate details and shimmering white design are truly mesmerizing — photos don’t do it justice! Try to visit early in the morning or close to closing time to avoid the large crowds and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Art museum
Museums
Baan Dam Museum, also known as the Black House, is a unique collection of wood buildings showcasing the artworks of Thawan Duchanee and other contemporary Thai artists. Situated in Chiang Rai, it is part of a day tour that includes visits to prominent temples such as the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Sueur Ten). The museum offers an intriguing experience with its dark-themed architecture and displays.
Great place for people looking for something different! I first came here ten plus years ago and the artist's work made a deep impression on me. His paintings exude strong strokes, and seeing paintings was worth the trip alone. Original paintings can be seen in the galleries next to the parking lot. The main structure on the museum grounds contains prints. One thing that stands out is the artist's prolific collection of things. Some interesting buildings on the grounds, one of which is reminiscent of a traditional house in Sulawesi (also some statues that looked Balinese in origin). Everything is visually engaging, definitely not a typical Thai attraction. There are artisans in the back building wood working, which was great to see as well. One staff said before COVID the museum would receive two to three thousand guests per day, but now visitors number around 500 per day. There are plenty of tourists here but it doesn't feel overcrowded. Well worth the visit.
Brian J — Google review
Another must do. Very unique contemporary art museum. This place will keep you entertained and interested for quite a while, there are lots of very unique and different displays both housed in indoor and outdoor areas over quite a large complex. Lots to see and quite memorable.

I like Thai traditional painting and wood carving art. So this place is amazing for me. Peace but deliver to strong message about real life and greedy in human spirit. Love this place.
Tanadchai A — Google review
The Black House (Baan Dam Museum) in Chiang Rai is haunting and unforgettable — a mix of art, philosophy, and raw symbolism. Created by national artist Thawan Duchanee over 30 years, the complex features more than 40 black teak buildings filled with animal bones, horns, and surreal sculptures. Each structure reflects themes of life, death, and rebirth drawn from Buddhist and animist beliefs. It’s not a temple but an artist’s dark reflection on human nature. Come early for a quieter visit — the stillness makes it even more powerful.
Noel M — Google review
Not particularly my cup of tea but might prove fascinating to some. Not really a museum as much as an art gallery/instillation. Quirky enough to be worth a quick stop for 80 bhat and a large garden with many extra small buildings to walk around and into too. Our favourite part was banging on the very large gong and TomTom drum ;)
Gillian H — Google review
Baan Dam Museum aka Black Museum was created by Thai artist Thawan Duchanee. It is basically a private art museum/gallery made up of around 40 various sizes and designes buildings almost are of them are painted in black. Building materials are dark wood, terracotta, glass, black coloured brick etc. The inside displays are mostly made of animal bones, animal structures, animal skins and horns etc. Sometimes it gives a very eery feel. Entrance fee is 80 Thai Baht per person.
Rajib B — Google review
I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but this place was disappointing and quite sad. It costs 80 baht to get in, and while they say there are 40 houses, several of them are just toilets. The space feels random — lots of touristy shops that don’t really fit the theme. The art is made almost entirely from dead animals, which is honestly overwhelming and disturbing. There’s a dead crocodile in nearly every room and horns everywhere. It just felt more macabre than meaningful. They also have what they call a “cat rescue,” but the cats are kept in small cages and clearly distressed. A few were pacing in circles like zoo animals. If they really want to help, they should let them roam free and actually care for them properly — it was hard to watch. Additionally the water buffalo and cows are tied up on small ropes. There’s no information about the art or the artist anywhere, except for one pamphlet that’s only in Thai. Overall, it felt uninformative, exploitative, and not worth the visit. I wouldn’t recommend it or go back.

Flea & Street Markets
Chiang Rai Night Bazaar is a bustling and compact night market that offers a variety of experiences. Visitors can explore street food stalls, shop for apparel, jewelry, and gifts, and enjoy live entertainment. The market is located near the ancient temple in Mueang Chiang Rai district, which holds historical significance in the province. It features the prominent Emerald Buddha and other magnificent Buddha statues. Additionally, the area around Jedyod road offers backpacker bars and affordable dining options.
Nice and big bazaar. Basically similar to other night market in Thailand, but this one has more vendor, from housewares, toys, accessories, collectibles, veggies, fruits, juices, and mostly food. People walk one way, and turn to the other side of the road for the opposite direction. Hundreds of varieties of food, but mostly satay/grilled and fried food. I love especially Thai traditional snacks that has coconut milk in it. Very tasty and must try. There's also a few local musicians/talents that show their skills. And you can also dance or sit with locals in the huge area where people gather to dance, sit, and eat. If you're in Chiang Rai on a Saturday night, this market is a must visit.
Irene S — Google review
The food centre at the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar has a wide variety of local Thai food stalls. There’s a stage for live music, which usually adds a lively vibe—but during our visit, it was raining and the low season, so there were plenty of empty seats. Still, we had a great time! We ordered a hotpot that came with a generous basket of vegetables and a large plate of meat, prawns, and cuttlefish—all for just 200 baht. It sounded too good to be true, so we asked three times to confirm the price—and yes, it really was that affordable! We also got vegetarian gyoza from another stall and finished our meal with a tasty box of mango sticky rice for 50 baht. There are many stalls offering a good range of local dishes, so it’s easy to find something you’ll enjoy. Highly recommend this place for a casual and budget-friendly dinner. By the way, we had a fabulous massage just a 3-minute walk away at Chiang Rai Nice Massage. Definitely worth checking out while you're in the area!

The Saturday Night Market in Chiang Rai is one of the most impressive and lively markets I’ve ever visited. Stretching for what feels like kilometers, the walk through the market is long and seemingly endless, filled with a vibrant mix of food, culture, and shopping. It’s a true sensory experience that captures the spirit of northern Thailand. The food selection is absolutely massive. You’ll find everything from Lanna-style rice dishes, fried pork and chicken, pad Thai, braised pork rice, to sweet treats like Thai pancakes, fruit desserts, and colorful cakes. I personally tried the fried omelette rice and fried pork—both were cooked perfectly, full of flavor and very satisfying. The tom yum soup I had was also rich and delightfully spicy, a perfect example of authentic Thai cuisine. Beyond food, the market offers rows of clothing stalls, handmade souvenirs, and traditional crafts. While most items are reasonably priced, it's good to stay aware of tourist mark-ups. A little bargaining goes a long way here. Adding to the festive atmosphere is live cultural entertainment, including traditional Thai dance performances right in the middle of the street. Locals and tourists alike are encouraged to join in and enjoy the rhythm, adding a wholesome community feel to the market. Whether you're there to shop, eat, or just soak in the atmosphere, the Saturday Night Market in Chiang Rai is an unforgettable experience. It's a must-visit for anyone looking to explore the local culture in an authentic and exciting way.
Alex C — Google review
Must do in Chiang Rai, this little Thailand town is most alive at night. Most of the vendors are sweet and no pressure. But some of the best deals we found on zipperless luggage, and clothes souvenirs were at this market. For example, I purchased a brand new crocodile skin wallet (2 tone), high quality for 950 TB ($29 USD). Crazy! The Thai food is always amazing and please interact with the Thai people, they are the best. Tip - take the Tuk Tuk taxi’s every you can, they are unforgettable! We got the “wild ride of Mr. Toad” more than once! Highly recommend the night bazaar!
Steven N — Google review
Very different from the night markets in the South. Quiet and spread over a couple of streets, it has 2 central venues with a stage, one offering western music and another Thai music, both live. There are eateries surrounding the stage and has a party atmosphere about it. Kids running around and and parents doing their own things. Did so clothes shopping. The bust stand is the landmark if you have to Google maps it.
Christopher P — Google review
The Chiang Rai Night Bazaar is one of the highlights of visiting this laid-back northern city. Unlike the larger and more touristy markets in Chiang Mai, the bazaar here feels cozy, relaxed, and very local in atmosphere. The market is not overwhelming in size, but it has everything you’d want: rows of stalls selling handmade crafts, clothing, and souvenirs at very fair prices. You’ll find unique hill-tribe textiles, wooden carvings, and locally designed jewelry, making it a great spot to pick up gifts. Bargaining is possible, but most prices are already reasonable. One of the best parts is the food court area, where you can sample an amazing variety of northern Thai street food—from grilled meats and noodle soups to sweet treats and fresh fruit smoothies. There’s often live music or cultural performances on stage, which adds to the warm, festive vibe while you eat. What makes this night bazaar stand out is its friendly, unhurried energy. It doesn’t feel like a tourist trap, but more like a community gathering where visitors are simply welcome. Tip: Arrive a bit early (around 6–7 PM) to beat the crowds and get a good seat near the stage if you want to enjoy the performances with your dinner.

Cozy place to spend the evening at. You’ll find stands for food and local entertainment, which includes local music and dancing. Almost felt part of the Chiang Rai community thanks to the lovely vibes that this place has at night. Strongly recommended
Luca L — Google review
Highly recommend stopping by this Bazaar if you are spending the night in Chiang Rai. It is a must! The food, clothes, and souvenirs are MUCH cheaper here than in Bangkok and Ayutthama. The live music is great and the food at Chiang Mai Night Bay is amazing.

Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple, is a unique and spectacular attraction in North Thailand. It serves as both a temple and an art gallery, featuring contemporary murals that offer thought-provoking scenes related to life, death, and human suffering. While the entrance fee is 100 baht, many visitors find it worth the price for the amazing experience. The temple's appearance surpasses its pictures and is considered a must-visit tourist spot.

The Chiang Rai Clock Tower is a stunning architectural masterpiece located in the heart of a traffic circle. Designed by renowned artist and architect Chalermchai Kositpipat, it bears resemblance to the iconic White Temple with its distinctive style. At night, the tower comes alive with colorful lights, creating a surreal environment.
It’s a golden clock that has a light show every hour on the hour starting at 8pm. No tickets, it’s just in the middle of the street. The birds make the experience more dramatic. They are like paid actors moving to the rhythm. However, it’s nothing crazy and can be missed if no time.
Rasha M — Google review
Best time to view the light show is 8pm, where it is dark enough. It runs for approximately 10-15 minutes. Only thing that ruins it is the constant flow of traffic on the round about. But still worth viewing.
Shane H — Google review
The Chiang Rai Clock Tower is one of the city’s most photogenic landmarks, designed by the same artist behind the White Temple. Its golden structure gleams by day, but the real highlight is the evening light show, when it glows in shifting colors set to gentle music (around 7, 8, and 9 p.m.). Located in the city center, it’s easy to stop by after dinner or while exploring nearby cafés. A short but memorable sight that perfectly captures Chiang Rai’s artistic flair.
Noel M — Google review
Located at the cross road of the town. Very nice. Must wait for the clock to chime at the hour. The lights changes colours.

The light show, coupled with the music, will stop you in your tracks. There are many, many birds - can be a bit unsettling. The poop on the streets and vehicles around give you a sense of how many birds there are.

Oub Kham Museum is a unique destination that showcases the rich tribal history of Northern Thailand. While it may not be as well-known as other cultural sites, this museum provides an in-depth look at the thousand-year history of the Tai people and Lanna culture. The private collections on display include ancient artifacts, textiles, Buddha images, and everyday items from Julasak Suriyachai's family, who has royal lineage in Lanna.
This is such a beautifull historical museum with so many cultural object about former Kingdoms in Thailand, especially the Lanna Kingdom. It is a little bit expensive (300 baht adult), but holidays costs more so I think it is worth visiting it. We, 3 people, were the only ones so we got a private tour. When you visit Chiang Rai, this museum must be on your bucket list! And afterwards you should drink a perfect cup of Akha coffee, out of the museum left, cross the streets and then 20 mtrs.
Martin D — Google review
The museum is interesting, but the way it’s presented needs to be improved. I was alone there, and the guide didn’t seem very happy to show me around. She even complained to me that she was tired from climbing the stairs up and down, as she had just filled in for someone. If you don’t want to say the same thing over and over again hundreds of times, put up signs or provide audio guides so visitors can learn about each item and enjoy their time. I spent two hours there—mostly waiting for guides—and they kept trying to rush through the tour. In the end, I regretted spending 200 Baht here. I could have gotten a massage instead.

This place is a must. Not only is the exhibition full of interesting stuff, some of which you will not see anywhere else, but they offer an English-speaking guide who is very nice and knowledgeable. There are many places to appreciate the craft of Thai people, but this visit really helps to understand the meaning of the objects. The entrance is 300 baht for adults, but keep in mind that this includes the guide. And it is very well worth it!

Absolutely great museum of Mekong region, especially Burmese cultural heritage, all fruits of lifelong efforts of a true enthusiast, who hassprciguvally studied history and museum management just to organize this enormous and precious collection, some of exhibits of which are as old as 1400 years! Thank you very much for preserving this priceless heritage and for letting our and future generations to get good look at it.

Perhaps not as large or stately as any of the other museums we all know elsewhere in the world.. but this museum certainly offers a breathtaking view of the past... some artifacts dating back 3000 years, others 1250 years... and the costumes on display could even rival that of the Ziegfield follies. Expect to pay 300THB per adult..(this is a private museum and most of this goes to upkeep and maintenance) Not all artifacts may be photographed and your guide will advise when and where possible or permitted and several rooms are shoes off.. Once the formal tour is completed offer a tip as gratuity, it will be very well received. The tour ends with some green tea in the reception room. Worth the stop and if you are a devotee of the Buddhist faith, some halls also offer places of worship and relics to view. On a lighter note, some rooms are simply claustrophobic with all the items displayed as you get a glimpse of how royalty from previous kingdoms could perhaps have lived. Come and see!

It's got an interesting collection. Very packed, and lots to see... though the arrangement is a bit weird and reminds me a bit of Ripley museums but not as tacky. Very informative tour of about 5 chambers included in the 300 bhat fee. You will need about an hour an a half there, about 1 hour for the tour and 30min to stroll around outside and take some photos. This is to be included if you want something out of ordinary, and if you are spending a few days at Chiang Rai.

Really nice museum, with a wonderful collection of historical items from old Norther kingdom, Chinese kingdoms, Shan and Chin kingdoms. It’s a luxurious collection that shows well the past and the culture of different ethnic groups ! Totally worth the visit ! And we had an really nice lady as a guide from the museum. She did explain everything really well. We had such a nice time and at the end, they do serve you some green tea. 100% recommended !

(Translated by Google) We stayed two nights at the Golden Triangle Palace Hotel and were very happy with this choice. The beds were hard and perfect for a good night's sleep, we slept really well. In the morning there was the possibility of drinking instant coffee and eating delicious bananas from the hotel owner's field. The girl at the reception was very nice to us and friendly. Through the hotel we were able to rent scooters, excellent service as they brought the scooters to the hotel and also picked them up. The staff are so helpful, kind and attentive. We arrived in the afternoon for a short visit and they arranged transport to the attractions within half an hour. If you are looking for a more traditional place, rather than a chain, then I would recommend this place. There's a veranda where you can sit and chill. The room had everything you needed, including both A/C and a ceiling fan (my preference). Excellent value for money. In the evening there were food stalls in the courtyard where food was cooked fresh.

I stayed here for 5 nights and it was perfect for me. Very close to the restaurants, bars and Walking Street but was very quiet at night. Good A/C in the room. Hard bed but I loved that. The owners were so welcoming and helped with tour booking and any other advice that was needed. Free bananas all day and a great cooked breakfast in the morning. For the money it really was fantastic. If I'm back in Chiang Rai, I'll stay here. Thanks!

Wat Rong Suea Ten, also known as the Blue Temple, is a modern Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai. It stands out with its striking sapphire blue exterior and intricate golden detailing. Visitors can explore this monumental temple as part of a day tour that includes other prominent temples such as the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and the Black House (Baandam Museum).
We visited this temple are were impressed with the blue colour scheme. The art work is very detailed with mythical creatures and the main shrine hall is a burst of blue. Entrance is free and we spent some time exploring the temple. We enjoyed our visit very much.
S C — Google review
Wat Rong Suea Ten, also known as the Blue Temple, is one of Chiang Rai’s most stunning and modern temples. Designed by a student of Chalermchai Kositpipat, the creator of the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), it beautifully combines traditional Thai Buddhist architecture with striking contemporary design. The temple’s vivid blue and gold tones immediately catch your eye, creating an atmosphere that feels both mystical and serene. Once you enter the main hall, you’ll be amazed by the enormous white Buddha statue sitting gracefully in the center. The surrounding interior glows with intricate paintings in deep shades of blue and turquoise, symbolizing wisdom and purity. Every corner of the temple showcases fine craftsmanship — from the naga serpents at the entrance to the detailed wall murals that tell Buddhist stories. Wat Rong Suea Ten is not only a visual masterpiece but also a place of peaceful energy. The temple isn’t as crowded as the White Temple, making it easier to enjoy quietly and reflect spiritually. Outside, small vendors sell souvenirs, snacks, and local desserts, adding a lively touch without disturbing the temple’s calmness. The service from the local caretakers and housekeeping team deserves praise. The area is kept spotless, the walkways are well-maintained, and even during busy hours, the atmosphere remains clean and inviting. They are friendly and polite, always greeting visitors with a smile and offering help when needed. Overall, Wat Rong Suea Ten is a must-visit destination in Chiang Rai — a perfect blend of creativity, spirituality, and Thai artistry that leaves every visitor in awe.

Beautiful temple to understand thai architecture mixed with modern and contemporary art. Very detailed work. It is a stunning modern temple known for its vibrant blue and gold design. Built on the site of an old temple once abandoned for a century, it was completed in 2016 by a student of Chalermchai Kositpipat, the artist behind the White Temple. The temple blends traditional Thai art with modern creativity, making it a mesmerizing symbol of spiritual beauty and contemporary artistry. The naga (serpent guardians) at the entrance protect the temple and symbolize power, water, and transformation. You can see these different types of guardians protecting the temples in buddhist culture.
Prabhani L — Google review
You definitely won’t miss this temple. The vibrant blue color is incredibly striking. But what truly caught my attention was the wall art, especially the detailed paintings depicting the life story of Sakyamuni Buddha. The artwork is beautiful and full of meaning. No entrance fee. Proper attire is required to enter, but no worries as they provide sarongs. There’s some ongoing renovation and construction, so hopefully there’ll be even more to see in the future.
Hm L — Google review
In all honesty this beats the white temple hands down for sheer visitability. Same creative flair but more compact and with way less visitors. Also actually in use as a Buddhist temple, just with added Disneyland vibes in the most Thai way imaginable. Just take a taxi and spend 30 minutes here, you won't regret it unless you have an aversion to the color blue or fun

It's simpler more commonly used name is "The Blue Temple" Came on a weekday, lots of crowds but nonetheless a beautiful temple with intricate detailed carvings on the temple and it's surroundings. The Ice Cream is nice!! 👍🏽👍🏽 It's like a treat you need to try once at the Temple. I call it the "Mango Sticky R'ice Cream"

Wat Rong Suea Ten, also known as the Blue Temple, is a contemporary Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand, renowned for its vibrant blue and gold color scheme. Wat Rong Suea Ten literally means House of Dancing Tigers. It stands out with its striking sapphire blue exterior, which is not a common color for Thai temples. The temple is a blend of traditional Thai architectural elements and modern artistic designs, creating a visually stunning and spiritually significant space. 🌀💙🫐🧿 Entrance fee is 100 Thai Baht for foreigners.
Rajib B — Google review
My visit to the Blue Temple, or Wat Rong Suea Ten, in Chiang Rai was absolutely mesmerizing! This temple is a vibrant masterpiece, with its stunning blue facade and intricate gold accents that shimmer under the sun. The moment I stepped inside, I was blown away by the vivid murals depicting Buddhist stories, adorned with rich hues of blue and pops of color that make every corner Instagram-worthy. The giant Buddha statue at the center, surrounded by ornate carvings, radiates a serene yet powerful presence, making it perfect for quiet reflection or simply soaking in the artistry. What sets this temple apart is its modern yet deeply cultural vibe, blending traditional Thai elements with contemporary design. The dragon motifs at the entrance (inspired by the temple’s name, "Dancing Tiger") are jaw-dropping, and the entire place feels alive with creativity. The grounds are clean, well-maintained, and surprisingly tranquil despite its popularity. Entry is free, though donations are appreciated, and there are small stalls nearby for snacks or souvenirs. The local staff were warm and welcoming, adding to the positive experience. I loved how accessible the temple is—located just a short drive from Chiang Rai’s city center, it’s easy to combine with visits to the White Temple or Black House. Whether you’re a culture enthusiast, a photographer, or just looking for a peaceful escape, the Blue Temple is a must-see. Pro tip: Visit in the early morning for fewer crowds and softer light for photos. This gem is a highlight of Chiang Rai and left me in awe of its beauty and spirit!

Pong Phrabat Hot Springs is a perfect destination for those seeking relaxation and natural beauty. The outdoor attraction features hot springs that feed into man-made pools, offering visitors a chance to soak in the warm waters while surrounded by nature. For the more adventurous, there's a nearby waterfall to hike to before indulging in the hot springs. Couples can also find it an ideal getaway, with private rooms available for a more intimate experience. Additionally, add-on treatments such as massages are offered on-site.
Peaceful and Quiet, free outdoor foot soak. I didn't have time to try the private bath. I wish I had time. Very good Thai massage and when ladies are talking to each other softly it's very soothing experience. Hand washing soap in toilet sink would be very good. There's a dazed looking T Rex with Pork trotter as it's hands, funny.
SAIKHAM L — Google review
A large and beautiful outdoor area with warm shallow and small pools for free use by visitors. There are small shops - stalls selling drinks, fruit and simple food in the area. And for those who want a massage, they can have their wish fulfilled. If you are going to use the pools inside there is a cost, mine cost 70B, towel, shampoo and soap 25B, and it was for an hour. It takes time to fill up the pool, but the recommended time in the warm water is 30 minutes, so there should normally be enough time. After the entrance, there are plenty of parking spaces in the area.
John S — Google review
It is well maintained and in very good condition. The foot bath is also very clean. This time I used the outdoor bath ♨️ hot spring pool. The fee is 20 Bt. The water is very good at 38°C. The sulfur smell is a little weak, but the water is slimy and makes your skin smooth.
Mitsu K — Google review
Cool thing to do on a rainy afternoon. There are outside springs that you can either dip your feet in or pay 20 baht for a shared bath. We decided to try an inside one, so for two people for an hour we were 100 baht. Really cool to see, the sulphur smells quite strong though. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Katie C — Google review
This place is pretty cool, the natural springs smell like sulfur but the local and free one isn't very hot. We went to the one in the new building and paid for a 2 person which was 100 baht. It was worth the size up as it was more spacious than the round one. Water got really hot so we had to rinse off with cold water. It was a much needed and relaxing hour we spent going in and out because it got too hot. Overall, give it a 4 out of 5 rating. Would definitely come back if we are in the area.
All O — Google review
A nice place to have a hot spring bath. A bit of Thai Onsen experience. We paid for a “large” room and it was large enough for two. The tub filled quickly and when we were done, drained quickly as well. Very inexpensive and relaxing. Staff was very kind.
Ken T — Google review
A little gem away from the mass tourism. It’s a very local hot springs and that’s seen in the price. They have simple private bathrooms which cost 50 Baht per hour (2025). There is little explanation from the front desk so it must be figured out by yourself how to have your bath. To help a bit: you have one large valve that fills the bath quickly. Water is warm. The smaller valve is where the extremely hot “fresh” spring water comes from. I mean extremely hot so be careful. In the hour you book you can get in and out as often as you feel comfortable with. Full up the bath every now and then, with fresh hot spring water. Cooling down is done by sitting on the small stool provided and emptying buckets of cold water over yourself. Loved it ! Enjoy.
Darren H — Google review
It’s very nice and relaxing, staff really friendly. It’s worth it to do private either big room or small room. The big one is very big and you can really rest of after. It’s around 12 $ worth it. We spend 4 hours there.

Wat Huay Pla Kang is a temple complex located 6 km northwest of Chiang Rai city. It features a 9-floor pagoda with 12 surrounding structures and a giant statue of the bodhisattva Guan Yin, also known as the Goddess of Mercy. Despite being called 'Big Buddha,' it's not actually a Buddha statue. Visitors can climb to the highest level of the pagoda for stunning views over Chiang Rai by either using stairs or paying for an elevator ride.
Beautiful temples to visit,I really appreciated the experience on the statue in particular. With 10 baht you can use the lift and go in the head of the statue where you got a great views of the temple and the surrounding area. The internal of the statue is really well decorated aswell. Another good experience!

We visited this temple with red roofs and the 90m tall Guan Yin statue. The buggy ride up to the big statue is free but there is a donation box. Alternatively, there are stairs to walk up which are flanked by intricate white dragon sculptures. They also have a drinks stall that charges only THB 20 for an iced drink like coffee, chocolate and more. This is a good temple to visit in Chiang Rai.

Wat Huay Pla Kang, often called the "Big Buddha of Chiang Rai," is a striking temple complex located about 6-8 km northwest of Chiang Rai city, Thailand. Known for its unique blend of Chinese and Lanna architectural styles, it’s a relatively new temple, with construction starting in 2001 under the guidance of Phra Ajarn Phob Chok. It’s a serene spot, less crowded than other regional temples, offering stunning sunset views and a peaceful atmosphere.

The temple is renowned for its serenity and picturesque architecture. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Chiang Rai city, with elevator access to the top. It is advisable to visit early in the morning to avoid the heat.
Arpita S — Google review
We hadn’t planned to visit this temple, but on our way from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai, we spotted the magnificent Bodhisattva Guan Yin statue from the road and quickly searched for the route to get there. So glad we made the spontaneous stop! Wat Huay Pla Kang is located on top of a gentle slope, with plenty of easy parking available. We spent about 40 minutes exploring the grounds. It was a quiet and peaceful Wednesday morning, which made it perfect for taking photos of the stunning Guan Yin statue and the surrounding temple structures. A beautiful and serene place—definitely worth a visit if you're in the area or passing by!
Ling S — Google review
The "White Temple," or Wat Rong Khun, in Chiang Rai should be on your list. It's not your typical temple, this place is a vibrant, contemporary art installation that happens to be a Buddhist temple. The first thing that strikes you is its dazzling white color, reflecting the sunlight from thousands of tiny glass pieces embedded in the plaster. It looks like something like taj mahal, incredibly intricate and almost otherworldly. As you approach, you cross a bridge over a pit of reaching hands a powerful, slightly unsettling symbol of human suffering and temptation. Inside, prepare for a surprise. The murals blend traditional Buddhist imagery with unexpected pop culture icons, creating a truly unique commentary on modern society. Even the restrooms are a work of art, housed in a separate, equally elaborate golden building. It's a place that sparks conversation and challenges perceptions, making it an unforgettable experience unlike any other temple in Thailand. Go and see the entire temple.

Chiang Rai Walking Street is a vibrant Saturday night experience where Thanalai Road comes alive with local culture, food, and crafts. It is not like Bangkok or Pattaya but have colors. The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, with a strong local vibe that feels authentic rather than overly touristy. You’ll find a wide variety of stalls selling handmade crafts, hill-tribe items, souvenirs, and delicious northern Thai street food like khao soi and grilled sausages. Live music and traditional dance performances add to the charm and create a festive community feel. Beautiful and calming place. Tranquil gardens and lake. The main building is a fantastic structure that houses Lanna artefacts, only issue is its not easy to understand what the objects are as there is no English description. There is a website you can link to that details the history of the objects, but it's not practical to put into translate every piece. Loved the place, and give it 5 stars, but hopefully they will consider changing this so foreigners can learn more about Lanna culture - which I believe is the objective. We were the only people there on a Saturday afternoon. Clearly an under appreciated place.

There are several structures that home hundreds of Lanna relics that are rarely seen at any other places in the world. The relics are showcased in a massive wooden building that replicates how large Lanna Palaces were built hundreds of years ago. In the center is a Buddha statue that is over 300 hundred years old. It was incredible to see the architecture and incredible craftsmanship of all 9 Northern Thailand kingdoms during ancient times. The grounds have beautiful gardens and pathways that are filled with diverse local plants and fauna.

200 bahts/person. The only thing I truly liked were the very beautiful paintings and the nature. I was thrilled to see Sa-ngiam Yarangsee (born 15 November 1970, Chiang Rai, Thailand) painting there♥️. His artworks are stunning, and I’m surprised he isn’t globally recognized. Truly remarkable work. I captured him in my photos and videos. I didn’t like that I wasn’t allowed to take photos or record videos in Haw Kham No.1, and there was a rather arrogant guide who kept instructing what was allowed and what wasn’t.

Park like grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Plenty of area to wander about for several hours. Lots of shade to keep cool. The main building is a work of art itself but there is a museum and art gallery also. Toilets clean, staff very helpful and had knowledge of the history behind the pieces we were looking at. There is a gift shop which also sells cold drinks. Plenty of parking on-site. The only trouble we had was finding the correct entrance. We drove to 2 locked gates and eventually found our way in. Well worth a visit.

Wat Klang Wiang is a stunning Buddhist temple located in the heart of Chiang Rai. It is renowned for its intricate and ornate design, featuring both historical and 20th-century sections. The vihara, built in traditional Northern Thai style, underwent partial renovation after sustaining damage in 1903. Despite being less well-known than other temples in the area, Wat Klang Wiang stands out for its rich decorations and beautiful architecture.
Visiting Wat Klang Wiang in Chiang Rai was a delightful experience that offered a deep dive into the city’s rich cultural heritage. Located at the corner of Rattanaket and Uttarakit, right in the heart of Chiang Rai, this temple is a stunning example of contemporary Lanna architecture. We stumbled upon it while exploring the city, and its ornate beauty immediately caught our attention. The temple, originally built in 1432 as Wat Chan Ta Lok, was rebuilt in the 1990s after centuries of decay, and it now stands as a vibrant testament to the region’s history. The complex is surprisingly expansive, with over twenty halls, pillars, wells, and gardens to explore. A large area plan at the entrance was a lifesaver, helping us navigate the viharn, ubosot, and scripture library without feeling lost. The main viharn, guarded by naga snakes and Singha lions, houses a massive golden Buddha statue surrounded by smaller idols, all set against intricate gold and red reliefs. The white chedi, adorned with elephant statues, is a highlight, especially with its three-tiered design and enshrined Buddha idols. The temple was peaceful during our visit, with only a few locals praying, allowing us ample time to soak in the details and snap photos. The grounds are immaculate, with well-tended flowers and shaded benches for resting. While there’s no entrance fee, we left a small donation to support upkeep. The lack of onsite toilets was a minor inconvenience, but nearby cafes like Baan Klang Wiang restaurant were just a short walk away. Visiting took about 30-45 minutes, and pairing it with a stroll to the Clock Tower (25 minutes away) made for a perfect morning. Wat Klang Wiang is a must-visit for its architectural splendor and serene ambiance—a true Chiang Rai gem

Wat Klang Wiang, a serene and historic temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand, stands as a testament to the city's rich cultural heritage. Nestled in the heart of the Old City, this exquisite temple is revered for its architectural splendor and its significance in the local community. The temple's name, "Klang Wiang," translates to "the temple in the middle of the city," reflecting its central location within Chiang Rai's ancient town. Its founding dates back to the reign of King Mengrai, the founder of Chiang Rai, making it one of the city's oldest and most cherished temples. As visitors approach Wat Klang Wiang, they are welcomed by a striking Lanna-style chedi, a traditional Thai stupa adorned with intricate carvings and ornate details. The temple's main prayer hall showcases remarkable Northern Thai architecture, featuring beautiful wooden carvings and vibrant murals that depict scenes from Buddhist scriptures. The serene temple grounds offer a peaceful atmosphere for meditation and contemplation, providing an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The lush gardens and tranquil ponds add to the temple's charm, creating a sense of harmony and tranquility. Wat Klang Wiang's historical significance, architectural beauty, and spiritual ambiance make it a must-visit destination for those seeking a glimpse into Chiang Rai's rich cultural past and the enduring beauty of Thai religious art and architecture.
Daniel Q — Google review
Another one of the smaller temples near the city center, Wat Klang Wiang does not have a great deal to distinguish it from others in Chiang Rai. Much of the architecture, particularly the chedi, are very ornate, but similar to others across Thailand. The primary feature is the very large Buddha statue in the main hall, surrounded by many others of varying styles. It’s a nice stop if you are already walking to other temples in the area, but you needn’t go out of your way to see it.

The Wat Klang Wiang is one of the most ornate temples in Chiang Rai. Every structure in the temple complex is richly decorated. The temple hall is built in a contemporary Lanna style guarded by nagas.

Wat Phra Kaew Chiang Rai, a 14th-century temple located in Mueang Chiang Rai district, is home to the revered Emerald Buddha, discovered on the temple grounds in 1434. Originally known as Wat Pa Ya or Wat Pa Yia, it was renamed in 1977 after the discovery of the Emerald Buddha image. The temple features a multi-faced ubosot built in 2433 and has undergone restoration over time.
A must visit if in Chiang Rai, the temples with their historical value, the museum is very interesting and so well set out. There are Buddhist meetings every Tuesday at 9.30 am where everyone is invited to join, and so interesting

Our visit to Wat Phra Kaew in Chiang Rai was a highlight of our trip, offering a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and stunning architecture! Located in the heart of the city near the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar, this temple is easily accessible yet feels like a serene retreat from the bustling streets. Known as the original home of the Emerald Buddha (now in Bangkok), Wat Phra Kaew holds immense cultural significance, and its peaceful ambiance made our visit unforgettable. The temple complex is beautifully maintained, with lush gardens, intricate statues, and vibrant Lanna-style buildings adorned with red and gold details. The main hall houses a replica of the Emerald Buddha, crafted with exquisite detail, and the surrounding murals depicting Buddhist tales are mesmerizing. We were particularly drawn to the Phra Yok Museum on-site, which displays rare Lanna artifacts, including jade Buddha images and ancient scriptures. a true gem in Chiang Rai that we’d highly recommend to anyone exploring the city!

This is one of the most amazing temples I’ve ever been to - the vibe and atmosphere is uniquely indescribable - the grounds are so green and well-maintained and all the structures on the temple territory are incredibly beautiful. They also have English-language meetings on Buddhism every Tuesday where you can talk with the monks.

This temple offers a complete blend of history, spirituality, and stunning architecture! The place accessible yet feels like a silent place full of solace. The building of this temple is well-maintained, with some gardens, statues, and red-gold ornaments around. Not only that, there is a Phra Yok Museum on-site, which depicting artifacts, and lots of a gems. Also, I enjoy my day dreaming here!

Wat Phra Kaew in Chiang Rai (also known as the Emerald Buddha Temple) is a peaceful, more traditional spot that feels very different from the flashy White and Blue Temples. It’s not touristy at all, which actually makes it a really nice break — quiet, calm, and very well maintained. There is a school for monks and locals come pray here. The temple is famous because the original Emerald Buddha (now in Bangkok’s Grand Palace) was discovered here centuries ago. The one you see now is a beautiful green jade replica, still very impressive and treated with a lot of respect. The whole complex has a very local, authentic vibe — more focused on spirituality than on Instagram posts. There’s no entrance fee. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), especially if you plan to enter the main hall. It’s less strict than the White Temple, but still a sacred place. They also have a small museum on the grounds with historical artifacts and info about the Emerald Buddha. We spent about 15 minutes - more if you take time to read the signs and enjoy the surroundings. It’s located close to the city center, so very easy to combine with the Blue Temple.
Alexander R — Google review
As any real temple, it's always good and peaceful but what tries to destroy it are some evil creatures around it. Such a holy place and some souls that have nothing else to do than gossiping and staring at others when looking on the mirror is so difficult. These men kept playing cards and talking about the farang and looking bad at me, especially the pink shirt one. Good examples to work in a temple!

The Long Neck Karen Village, located in Chiang Mai, is a unique destination where visitors can immerse themselves in the culture and traditions of various tribes. The village is home to different tribes such as the Meo people with their stilt houses, the Palongs known for tea, and the Karen people who are skilled weavers. One of the main attractions is observing the Karen women wearing metal bracelets around their necks, legs, and forearms.
A unique experience that supports 5 refugee hill tribes, who moved here over 30 years ago. It’s a lot like an outdoor ikea for colorful handmade gifts, with photo opportunities along the way. The land is beautiful to walk through. The tribes people are generally happy. The environment was clean. Many I saw had cell phones (which to me is like they are no worse off than anyone else really.). I bought a number of gifts, and I think the expectation is you buy some things, in addition to paying the entrance fee. If you are comfortable with that, then I do recommend the experience. It’s really a great opportunity to get gifts for friends and family.
Tom C — Google review
This place has a few tribes where they are gathered in different villages. As you enter, you need to pay 300 Baht per person. The walkabout covers the different villages and the last being the Karen tribe with the long neck. Each village will have their display and sale of traditional handicrafts. You can take photos with them.
Irene C — Google review
300 bht entry fee. Buy water before you head down, there’s no food or drink until you return to the entry which could take some time. The map sucks. Like really sucks 😂 it’s super confusing and we definitely got lost. If you see red arrows just follow them and eventually you will end up where you’re supposed to be. There are basic toilet facilities. Nothing flash, take toilet paper. The first village we came to had some pushy store vendors but don’t be put off by them. The guy in the first village with the arrow shooting is great fun. Every other village we passed through the people were lovely. The English is quite limited but they were happy to greet us and show us all the wares they were hand making. There is a lady you can pay to take photos with. All the prices are very reasonable and it’s quite a humbling place to visit. Well worth it.

Visiting the Long Neck Karen (Kayan) Village near Chiang Rai was a unique and emotional experience for our family. We had read about it before arriving, but being there in person was a whole different feeling. The women and girls with their traditional brass neck coils were striking to see, and we learned that the rings don’t actually lengthen the neck—they push down the collarbone and compress the rib cage over time. The village is mostly set up like a cultural showcase, with small wooden huts selling souvenirs and handicrafts. We walked through narrow pathways where the residents smiled and waved, occasionally offering their crafts for sale. While no one pressured us to buy anything, it did feel a little bit like a tourist setup. There’s an entry fee, and the whole experience can feel commercialized if you don’t approach it with the right mindset. Still, the women were gracious and warm, especially when we took the time to chat (with the help of a guide). Their lives are shaped by a mix of tradition, necessity, and tourism. We made it a point to buy a few handmade items—not just as souvenirs, but as a small way of giving back. This visit made us think a lot. On one hand, it’s a rare opportunity to witness a unique and ancient tradition. On the other, there’s an uneasy feeling about how much of it is for show, and how much is genuine cultural preservation. If you go, go respectfully. Go with curiosity, not just for photos, but to learn about their stories. It’s a chance to reflect on how culture, livelihood, and tourism intersect.

The Long Neck Karen Village near Chiang Rai offers a glimpse into the traditions of the Padaung (Karen) community, many of whom are refugees from Myanmar. Visitors can see women wearing the iconic brass neck rings and watch traditional weaving and crafts. Entrance is inexpensive, and travelers often bring small gifts like school supplies for the children, which is greatly appreciated. While the cultural display can feel a bit staged, visiting early in the day helps avoid crowds. A brief stop that provides insight into local heritage, approached with respect and curiosity.

Long Neck Village is a fascinating destination! The village is home to the Padaung people, an ethnic group known for their unique cultural practices, particularly the tradition of wearing brass coils around the necks of women. This practice, which is believed to enhance beauty, has become a distinctive feature of the Padaung people. Visitors to the village can experience the rich culture and traditions of this community, learn about their history, and appreciate the intricate craftsmanship of their handmade goods. The village offers a glimpse into a way of life that is both captivating and thought-provoking.

It's a nice place to see hill tribe people. You can rent authentic dresses and hats for photos and talk with the people in the village. There are many women wearing neck rings towards the end and some children are wearing practice rings as well (just for practice, kids won't wear them all day!). There are many souvenirs for sale as well. Entrance fee: 300B for foreigners and 200 for Thai people. Renting a dress will be 50B. Don't forget to be politand give some money when you want to take a photo with one of the villagers.

300 baht each. Step steps down to villages. 7 hilltribe villages and peoples represented. Focused on selling goods -many not made locally. However a few items you could see being made and could purchase. It felt a little commercialised, but a nice way to experience the clothing, housing and a small taste of hilltribe life if you have no time.

The Hilltribe Museum and Education Centre in Chiang Rai is a cultural center dedicated to the six hill tribes of Northern Thailand: Akha, Hmong, Karen, Lahu, Lisu, and Yao. It offers an insightful look into the history and heritage of the region's Lanna culture through its extensive collection of artifacts such as traditional costumes, tools, carvings, and cooking utensils.
Very useful information about where the tribes originated from and a bit about how they live now. Not everyone’s cup of tea but I like learning about other cultures. I watched a short film in an air conditioned room which gave a brief yet detailed description about each of the 6 main tribes. A few days later, I visited the site where the hill tribes live now which although interesting, I wasn’t totally convinced of its authenticity. However, I purchased some gifts from each of the tribespeople as it all went to help school the children I believe.

This little museum was great. Price is 50 THB per person and it includes a free herbal tea. The tour starts with an interesting documentary about all the minority villages in Thailand, their history and traditions. After the movie you can visit the small museum and buy souveniers.

It's a good place to learn about all the tribes of the mountain. However the content is quite boring, just informative.
Tony C — Google review
Been there before and came back in a hope that, with years, the exhibition became more modern, bright and informative. Regretfully, that did not happen. Yes, it's a charity project, but that does nit mean it has to be in such a 1970s' style... In my opinion, there could be way more information, descriptions and original exhibits.

Probably give you insight of the different hill tribe in Thailand. Know the do and don't before you wanted to visit the tribe village and want you will be expecting. The pda inside the museum also offer customise tour which can range from half day to 4 days 3 nights trekking or educational. They are non profit organisation that put the money they earned into good use for the tribe.
Siew L — Google review
The museum got old. It feels like they set it up 20-30 years ago and left it untouched since then. Additionally the airflow is so bad within that building that you get tired quickly because of lack of oxygen inside. However, they had a video presentation available in different languages - nice! So we learned a lot of numbers about the different tribes (easy to forget). The 50₿ are not too expensive for what's offered. It is ok to get an overview about the tribes and might help you to decide wether you want to visit a tribe and if - which one to visit.

The King Mangrai Monument in Chiang Rai is a revered statue of the city's founder, King Mengrai, standing on a pedestal surrounded by white horses and elephants. Built in 1262, Chiang Rai was the original capital of the Lanna kingdom before being replaced by Chiang Mai. The monument symbolizes reverence for King Mengrai and his significant role in establishing the city. Visitors can learn about free sightseeing tram tours at an information kiosk behind the monument.

Came across this monument tonight by accident and it was stunning. I cannot believe it didnt show up on any of the Chiang Rai tour lists or city guides. It's a quick stop near the city center but seeing the large animal statues all facing in the same direction as King Mangrai was magnificent. They were facing a golden archway across the street and they had more golden pieces behind them. People were lighting incense and candles when I arrived so I didnt read the placards. I didnt want to disturb them. It qas really, really beautiful

Chivit Thamma Da Coffee House, Bistro & Bar is a charming family-owned establishment situated along the picturesque Kok River in Chiang Rai, Thailand. This cozy spot offers a delectable array of dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients, providing a delightful taste of northern Thai cuisine while also supporting the local community. The menu boasts an enticing mix of traditional Thai and European fare, catering to diverse palates. Additionally, visitors can indulge in an assortment of delectable cakes from the bakery.
I visited Chivit Thamma Da Coffee House several times during my stay in Chiang Rai. It’s a beautiful riverside spot with vintage charm and a peaceful ambience, perfect for relaxing with coffee or a meal. The drinks and desserts are well-prepared, and though service can be a bit slow during peak hours, it’s still a wonderful place to unwind and enjoy the view. Truly, it's one of the best cafés l've ever visited.

Very awesome restaurant that has a beautiful setting on the river with a very relaxed welcoming colonial atmosphere. The food and drinks are high standard and reasonably priced. The service is efficient and friendly. This is definitely somewhere you should at least visit once during you stay in Chiangrai

We came here for a relaxed Sunday lunch and sat outside in the garden, which has a lovely, peaceful atmosphere with lots of greenery and a charming old house setting. It felt very chilled and a great spot to linger over a meal. The menu is extensive, with plenty of Thai and Western choices. I went for a burger, which was tasty and well presented with crispy fries, while my friend tried the stew, which was enjoyable but a little on the watery side. The smoothies are also worth trying — there’s a wide selection and mine was refreshing. Service was friendly and unhurried, and it felt like the kind of place you could easily spend a couple of hours. Prices are fair considering the setting and portion sizes. Overall, it’s a beautiful café-restaurant with great ambience, a wide menu, and a nice balance between Western comfort food and local dishes. Would recommend for a laid-back lunch or to simply enjoy the gardens with a drink.

Chivit Thamma Da Coffee House, Bistro & Bar is an absolute gem in Chiang Rai and an essential stop for anyone visiting the area. From the stunning, relaxed riverside setting to the exceptional service, everything about this place is top-notch. The food, in particular, was sensational! We were completely blown away by several dishes. The chicken wings were simply delightful—perfectly cooked and seasoned. The fish salad was an absolute highlight; light, fresh, and bursting with amazing flavour. And let me tell you, the slow cooked beef stew is an absolute must order—rich, tender, and deeply satisfying. I will absolutely and whole-heartedly recommend this place to all my friends. A must if you are in Chiang Rai!

An impressive menu with an extensive range of foods, drinks and desserts. Excellent food, very attentive and efficient service, and a lovely serene and upmarket setting. We had the Australian beef stew, which was outstanding, the beef khao soi, which was absolutely delicious, bangers and mash (simple but delicious) and an egg white omelette with garlic bread (very tasty). Our server asked about allergies and made a spot-on recommendation about our son’s drink. Definitely worth a visit!

Really nice cafe overlooking the river, the No:1 motorway is fully in view but not really much noise, it’s just ugly and wouldn’t be correct not to mention it. Staff were very attentive, the food and drinks are on the expensive side but not stupid. Beer + coffee + two meals 775thb. Nice wee bits of interesting detail in the bar.

Chivit Thamma Da Cafe offers one of Chiang Rai's most beautiful and tranquil settings. Heaven Burger is a relatively new but highly praised restaurant in downtown Chiang Rai, offering a variety of Western classics such as burgers, sandwiches, and beers. The establishment also serves surprisingly good pizzas. The restaurant's proceeds go to the Elephant Nature Park and it promotes vegetarianism through its decor. Additionally, Heaven Burger offers vegan and vegetarian options alongside its delicious burgers. Customers can enjoy their meals inside the air-conditioned restaurant while taking in the street view and relaxing music.
Ate here twice in a row! Best burgers in Thailand ...and the friessss 🤤! They have options for everyone: meat eaters, veggie and vegan. We tried the signature burger (nice and juicy), jalapeno burger (tasty and meaty), plant base cheese burger (solid), and vegan crispy tofu burger (tasty and so crispy). They were great, 10/10 ❤️
Rebecca M — Google review
This is the best burger place in Chiang Rai. There’s a great selection of burgers, pastas and drinks. Each burger you get to choose your bun and side. These are not regular boring plain burgers. I’d definitely recommend eating here. We came back twice in two days.
James K — Google review
Tasty classic cheeseburger on a charcoal bun w/ a side of wedge fries around 179 baht. Couldn't help but to order a Chang too. The burger still has that white peppery seasoning (not exactly the western style) but delicious regardless. Their menu also had some veggie and vegan options. Chicken & pork patties if beef isn't your thing. Wings and pizzas as well!
Jake N — Google review
Food here is awesome, I had the new jalapeño cheese tuna toasted sandwich and it was mind blowing, the French fries were so good too! This small burger place surpassed my expectations by far! Recommended!
Guille M — Google review
The menu offers a wide variety of burgers, including beef, pork, chicken, fish, and vegetarian options, as well as sandwiches. You can also choose the type of burger bun you prefer. The fries are large and delicious, reasonably priced, and tasty. There’s also a great selection of beverages with excellent flavors.
Jintana K — Google review
Really liked this place, the burgers are big - you can actually choose the amount of meat in your burger and the biggest pot is really generous. No onions in the patty, which was a great bonus. But we especially wanted to compliment the service - everyone was super sweet and friendly
Martyn S — Google review
They have a nice cod fish burger and they're other burgers are very delicious (I tried them all). I liked the steak fries and home made onion rings. The homemade burger buns were a taste of home. My wife had the pasta salad and was very satisfied

I recommend it 100% The first time on my world trip I had a patty where I can say that it was good! With the onion bread and extra bacon the burger was just awesome! We went back the very next day and had the Caesar Salad. The chicken was just spot on and the dressing was delicious! The portions are good, the burger just needs a few more fries. Apart from that, the staff were courteous every time and the food was simply good. The prices are also perfectly acceptable.

Wat Phra Sing Chiang Rai is a 14th-century Buddhist temple featuring a purple jade Buddha. It is often confused with another temple of the same name in Chiang Mai due to their shared history. The main attractions include the ubosot, viharn, chapel with a Buddha footprint, and monk residence area. The stunning northern Lanna style architecture and interiors make it a delightful sight to behold. Additionally, there are fascinating Buddha images under sacred Bodhi trees on the temple grounds.
Stunning gold temple.. non-touristy place, I believe I only saw 2 other people. There is a nice little coffee shop close by, I grabbed a cup of cocoa and sat down enjoying the scenery. There's other temples nearby walking distance, can easily see this and the others in one go.
J N — Google review
Wat Phra Singh, located on Tha Luang Road in the heart of Chiang Rai, Thailand, is a 14th-century Buddhist temple renowned for its Lanna-style architecture and historical significance. Known for once housing the revered Phra Buddha Sihing (Phra Singh) statue, this temple offers a serene and culturally rich experience. My visit to Wat Phra Singh was a highlight of my Chiang Rai exploration, blending tranquility, intricate artistry, and a deep connection to Thai heritage. Below is a detailed review of my visit, covering the temple’s ambiance, architectural features, cultural significance, practical tips, and overall experience. Wat Phra Singh’s architecture is a stunning example of Lanna style, characterized by flared roofs, intricate woodwork, and vibrant colors. The main buildings, including the ubosot (ordination hall) and Wihan Kaew (glass vihara), are the focal points of the complex. Wat Phra Singh’s history dates back to 1385, though its exact origins are unclear. According to the Jinakālmālīpakarna, the Phra Buddha Sihing statue, a revered Lanna Buddha image, was brought to Chiang Rai by Thao Maha Brahma and enshrined in the royal vihara, giving the temple its name. The statue was later moved to Chiang Mai’s Wat Phra Singh, but a replica remains in Chiang Rai, maintaining the temple’s spiritual legacy. The temple’s connection to the Phra Buddha Sihing makes it a significant site for Lanna Buddhists. During my visit, I observed locals quietly praying and lighting incense, a reminder of the temple’s role as a community hub. Unlike more tourist-oriented temples, Wat Phra Singh retains a “genuine revered feeling,” as one reviewer aptly described. The presence of monks conducting an evening service around 6 PM added to the authenticity, though I respected their privacy and observed from a distance. Wat Phra Singh in Chiang Rai is a hidden gem that combines architectural beauty, historical depth, and spiritual tranquility. Whether you’re a temple enthusiast or a casual traveler, this site offers a rewarding experience that captures the essence of northern Thailand’s Lanna heritage. Plan your visit for the late afternoon or evening, dress respectfully, and take time to appreciate the intricate details and peaceful surroundings. It’s a perfect addition to any Chiang Rai itinerary, leaving you with a deeper appreciation for Thailand’s rich cultural tapestry.

The golden Chedi on the western side is breathtaking. Both temples offer unique craftsmanship and artwork.. the one wooden temple with ornate carving while the other focuses on Buddha and students. Sunday afternoon appeared a good time to meander through with no other people in sight I had the venue to myself to look, observe and contemplate. No entrance fees needed. Lots of parking available. Also walking distance from most other temples in the area.

Wat Phra Sing, one of Chiang Rai's most revered and historic temples, is an architectural masterpiece that encapsulates the city's spiritual and cultural heritage. Located in the heart of Chiang Rai's old town, this sacred temple, also known as the "Temple of the Lion Buddha," exudes an aura of serenity and reverence. The temple's history dates back to the 14th century, making it one of the city's oldest religious sites. Its significance lies in enshrining the revered Phra Buddha Sihing image, a highly venerated Buddha statue believed to have protective powers. As visitors approach Wat Phra Sing, they are met with a grand and ornate entrance guarded by mythical lion statues, leading to a courtyard adorned with vibrant floral displays and intricate stone carvings. The central prayer hall, a stunning example of Lanna architecture, showcases intricately carved teakwood panels and glistening gold details that add to its opulent beauty. Inside the temple's sacred sanctuary, the revered Phra Buddha Sihing image is enshrined in a resplendent gold and glass case, drawing devotees and visitors seeking blessings and spiritual solace. The temple grounds provide a peaceful oasis, with serene gardens, ancient trees, and serene ponds offering a tranquil space for contemplation and reflection. Wat Phra Sing's cultural significance, architectural elegance, and spiritual ambiance make it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking to delve into Chiang Rai's rich history and immerse themselves in the timeless allure of Thai temple art and devotion.
Daniel Q — Google review
At Wat Phra Sing, you'll find three distinct temples sharing the grounds. Of these, one caught my attention with its unconventional red structure that encased a Buddha figure, adding a dash of intrigue to the visit
Alwin G — Google review
This small temple definitely has less traffic than others in the area, but it has a few unique features that make it worth a visit. All of the halls that are currently accessible have beautiful woodwork, and one also includes historical photos, including King Rama IX’s visit. Beautiful Buddhist paintings and artwork around the grounds, often showing a touch of Hindu influence, are very well preserved.

The Chiang Rai City Pillar Shrine (San Lak Mueang), nestled beside Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong, is a captivating and sacred site that beautifully encapsulates the spiritual and cultural essence of Chiang Rai. This serene shrine is not only a visual delight but also a place of deep historical and spiritual significance. A quick visit here left me in awe of its elegance and tranquility—a true hidden gem worth exploring! Historical and Cultural Importance The San Lak Mueang, established in 1988 to commemorate King Mengrai’s 700th anniversary and the 60th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, serves as the spiritual heart of Chiang Rai. The city pillar, a traditional Thai symbol, is believed to house the city’s guardian spirit, protecting and bringing prosperity to the region. Designed in a striking Khmer style by national artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, the shrine features 108 intricately carved pillars, each representing Buddhist virtues and Lanna heritage. This sacred site is a focal point for locals seeking blessings for good fortune and safety, especially during festivals when offerings of flowers and incense fill the air. A Serene and Stunning Experience The shrine’s open-air structure, surrounded by lush greenery and overlooking the Kok River, creates a peaceful ambiance perfect for quiet reflection. The golden pillar, adorned with vibrant cloth and offerings, stands as the centerpiece, exuding a sense of reverence. The area is impeccably clean, with well-maintained grounds that enhance the spiritual atmosphere. The intricate details of the pillars and the subtle Lanna motifs make it a photographer’s delight, especially during the golden hour when the light casts a warm glow. Why It’s a Must-Visit Located just a short walk from Chiang Rai’s city center, the shrine is easy to reach and pairs perfectly with a visit to the adjacent Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong. A 5-10 minute stop is enough to soak in its beauty and significance, making it ideal for travelers with limited time. The lack of crowds adds to its charm, offering a moment of calm amidst Chiang Rai’s bustling attractions. Whether you’re a history buff, a culture enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful spot, the San Lak Mueang delivers. This shrine is a testament to Chiang Rai’s rich heritage and spiritual depth. I highly recommend visiting to experience its quiet beauty and pay respects to the city’s guardian spirit. A truly unforgettable stop!

If you have some spare time, don't forget to visit the birthplace of Chiang Rai. It is a bit of a walk up the hill but certainly worth the effort.
Karl M — Google review
This is really important history landmark. You can spend 5 minutes here to claim that you had set foot in the birth place of Chiang Rai. The Stupa here is older than the city. It is more than 1,000 years old while the city was established here around 750 years ago. The city pillar was built just 30 years ago but location is accurate.

UPDATE: thank you all, for the thoughtful and memorable birthday singing and celebration 🥳 🎉 🎂 From the moment I stepped out of the car and onto the premises of The Legend Chiang Rai Boutique River Resort and Spa (เดอะเลเจนด์ เชียงราย บูทิค ริเวอร์ รีสอร์ท แอนด์ สปา) located a short drive from Chiang Rai International Airport, I felt an immediate sense of warmth and welcome. The staff's attention to detail is truly remarkable, making you feel valued from the very start. The completely unexpected room upgrade was such a wonderful bonus for my birthday celebration! It's a fantastic place to stay! The location is perfect – close to the airport and surrounded by beautiful nature, including a lovely river, creating a sense of calm and tranquility that's hard to find. The serene surroundings combined with the delightful morning breakfast made this an experience of a lifetime. A special thanks to Miss Suphin and her amazing team, including the gentleman who gave the vibe that he was the partner / owner of this wonderful place. I think his name is Eric. Lastly, certainly not least, I'm honoured to have met you, brother Stefan, and can see God's hand at work during our meeting. My best birthday gift , is not one that's tangeable here (Hebrews 11: 1-3) A truly exceptional and highly recommended experience!

We have had such a wonderful stay at The Legend. The staff have all been so kind, helpful and smiley. We stayed in one of the One Bedroom Pool Villa and had a complimentary plate of fruit. The room overlooked the Kok River. Our bedroom had an amazing view as we overlooked the garden and Kok river, it was absolutely beautiful. The room had a small kitchen, a sitting room with windows that also overlooked the garden and the river. The pool was lovely and a wonderful place to relax. There are bathrooms with shower facilities. We had breakfast included and the only negative is that it becomes repetitive therefore a few different items each day would be better. The grounds are pretty. We hired a scooter and it's about 10 minutes scooter ride into the main road in town. We'd definitely stay here again

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ After a long 14-hour drive we arrived to a very warm welcome. The room was spotless, well designed, and surrounded by a beautiful Bali-like garden. Breakfast was excellent — homemade yogurt, salad, fruits, and whole wheat bread perfect for vegetarians, with plenty for non-vegetarians too. The manager personally greeted guests at breakfast and in the evening, which made us feel truly cared for. Highly recommended!

Absolutely delightful stay here. Big and clean rooms, good breakfast, amazing hotel cat named "Madame" that seems to have the run of the place. The manager Eric was very helpful and attentive. Can walk into the 'action' in about 25 minutes if that's your thing, or you can opt for a 60-70 baht taxi. We came on our honeymoon and there was a lovely swan arrangement on our bed.
Brian D — Google review
Had to attend to some family matters and stayed here for a couple of days. Located on the river, with lovely beautiful trees all around. The hotel is centrally located so getting into town to go visit walking street, or trying one of the many restaurants is easy and convenient. Rooms at the hotel are well maintained and tastefully decorated, which added to the stay and made hanging around our riverside room even more appealing. If you want to give going out to eat a miss, the dining options at La Casa shouldn’t be missed, we had a very enjoyable and reasonably priced meal there. Cannot fault the service we received during our stay, everyone was super friendly and helpful. It’s not 5 stars but what they do they do very very well!

Mae Fah Luang - Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI) is a small but efficient airport located just 10 minutes from the city center by car. The check-in hall offers various food and coffee stalls, while the departure hall has a few options. The airport provides clean facilities, including toilets, and features a food court on the second floor along with several restaurant chains and local souvenir shops.
Mae Fah Luang – Chiang Rai International Airport offers a pleasant and relaxing travel experience, especially when compared to busier airports like those in Bangkok or Hat Yai. The airport is well-maintained and easy to navigate, with fewer crowds, making the overall atmosphere more laid-back and stress-free. The temperature inside the terminal is cool and comfortable, adding to the calm ambience. There are plenty of shops to explore while waiting for boarding or upon arrival. Travelers can enjoy a hot cup of coffee from well-known outlets such as Doi Chaang Café, Black Canyon, and 168C Tea and Coffee Club. Local souvenir shops also add a unique charm, offering northern Thai specialties like pork fat rings, biscuits, local snacks, and handmade crafts. These stores make it convenient for visitors to grab last-minute gifts or try something authentically local. Clean and well-kept restrooms are another plus point here, reflecting good upkeep and attention to traveler needs. Additionally, ticket counters for local transportation or tour services are available within the airport, making it easier for tourists to plan their next destination right after landing. Overall, Mae Fah Luang Airport provides a smooth and enjoyable start or end to your journey in northern Thailand.

The airport is small, and parking is difficult to find on holidays. The facilities are adequate, including disabled access. It's easy to navigate, with automated check-in kiosks and a modest number of restaurants. - There are airport taxis if you're heading into the city, or you can book a ride through an app, which might be cheaper.

Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 1 is a well-organized and convenient transportation hub located in the heart of the city, close to the night market and main shopping street. The terminal offers comfortable and punctual bus services, including direct routes from Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit) that take around 9-10 hours. Travelers can book their tickets in advance, providing passport details and choosing their seats.
Hands down the most beautiful and neatly organized bus terminal I have been at in Thailand. Covered in big murals made by very talented artist or artists I don’t know. Even though you don’t need to catch a bus you should still go here. Definitely a 5 star review to this terminal. One down side is that there’s no 24 hour service here. So be here before they close in the evening.
Kasper H — Google review
Chiang Rai Bus Terminal No. 1, located in the heart of the city next to the vibrant Night Bazaar, is a shining example of a well-organized, neat, and clean transportation hub. This terminal, often referred to as the "old bus station," has been beautifully renovated and stands out as one of the most impressive bus terminals in Thailand. Its blend of functionality, cleanliness, and cultural charm makes it a 5-star destination for travelers. Here’s why it deserves the highest praise: Exceptional Cleanliness and Maintenance The terminal is impeccably clean, thanks to diligent staff who ensure the facilities remain spotless. The paid toilets (3 THB per entry) are well-maintained, with a unique coin-operated revolving gate adding a quirky touch. The waiting area is airy and open, with plenty of seating (though some benches could use repair). The entire station feels fresh and welcoming, with no litter or clutter in sight. The presence of a minimart and café inside the terminal adds convenience, offering clean spaces to grab snacks or an iced coffee while waiting for your bus. Organized and Traveler-Friendly Navigating the terminal is a breeze, even for first-time visitors. Routes are clearly marked with departure times posted at the bus platforms, and drivers or attendants often call out destinations, especially for popular routes like the White Temple (Platform 4 and 8) or Chiang Mai. The Green Bus counter, located near the toilets, is the go-to for interprovincial routes, offering VIP, 1st, and 2nd-class buses to places like Chiang Mai and Lampang. Tickets for local buses can be purchased onboard, making short trips hassle-free. The terminal also features a baggage storage area (20 THB per bag) near the Green Bus counter, perfect for day trippers exploring Chiang Rai. With ample power outlets in the waiting area, you can keep your devices charged while planning your next move. Reliable and Diverse Transport Options The terminal serves a mix of local and interprovincial routes, making it a versatile hub. Local buses to the White Temple (20 THB) run frequently from 6:15 AM to 5:50 PM, while Green Bus offers 16 daily services to Chiang Mai (3-4 hours, 150-350 THB depending on bus class). Other destinations include Mae Sai, Chiang Khong (for the Laos border), and Nan. The CR Bus shuttle to Chiang Rai Airport (28 THB, every 40 minutes until 11:00 PM) is a budget-friendly option for travelers. While the terminal doesn’t operate 24/7, its hours (roughly 6:00 AM to evening) are sufficient for most travel needs. Booking Green Bus tickets in advance is recommended during high season to secure a spot. Minor Drawbacks, Major Strengths The only minor downside is the lack of 24-hour service, so plan your arrivals and departures accordingly. Some benches are worn, and the open-air waiting area isn’t air-conditioned, but the cleanliness and organization more than make up for these. The terminal’s compact size ensures it never feels overwhelming, and the staff’s helpfulness adds to the positive experience. Why It’s the Best Chiang Rai Bus Terminal No. 1 is a model of efficiency, cleanliness, and cultural charm. Its prime location, spotless facilities, and artistic ambiance make it a standout among Thailand’s bus stations. Whether you’re a budget traveler hopping to the White Temple or a tourist heading to Chiang Mai, this terminal offers a seamless and pleasant experience. I highly recommend starting your Chiang Rai adventure here—it’s a clean, neat, and delightful gateway to Northern Thailand!

Beautiful paintings. Took the bus to Chiang Mai here. You can also buy the bus ticket from any 7-Eleven if you have a Thai number.

Very convenient location next to Night bazaar, restaurants, hotels, Watsons, Boots, 711, massage shops, etc. The facilities are clean and well organized with plenty of staff around to help you. Ticket counter not that busy if you want to get bus tickets to another place. If you have to wait a while for your transportation to arrive you can walk across the street to a cafe and chill.

It's a small and local bus terminal that has services to the nearby cities. The main reason that I like it is beautiful paintings on the walls. You can see portraits of Lana (north of Thailand) girls in traditional dresses.

For anyone else who tried to book the greenbus online but couldnt. Site seemed sketchy anyway 😮‍💨 We we trying to get to Chiang Mai from Chiang Rai and this was definitely the cheapest option. Id advise to buy the ticket a day before leaving to secure the seats since reserving them waaay in advance might still be subject to schedule changes due to the weather etc. The seats themselves had a lot of leg room and its two per side of a row. Also had free water! They stopped twice for bathroom breaks which was nice too. Overall smooth and comfy ride. ✨️

The Wangcome Hotel offers warmly decorated rooms and suites, providing a relaxed atmosphere for guests. Despite its quiet location, it is conveniently situated within walking distance of various attractions such as bars, restaurants, massage shops, the night market, Saturday market, clock tower and bus station. The hotel's breakfast buffet is considered decent for its price range. The hotel exudes a charming old-world ambiance and provides 5-star service from its staff.
First of all, the location is great. It's right in the middle of downtown Chiang Rai, and there's everything around. To be honest, the room is old and there are small ants. However, it is clean and well-equipped, and it's nice that there is a bathtub. And above all, the service of the reception staff is excellent. When I left my laptop at the airport, they contacted Lost & Found on my behalf, and the staff's English level is extremely high in Thailand. If I were asked if I would stay again, I would. Thank you!

Hotel has an amazing location close to all the bars massages and restaurants. The staff is very nice and welcoming and goes beyond to help you with everything. The downside is the hotel and the rooms itself. Its outdated and definitely need some work in my opinion. The bed is like a stone and the AC don't get really cool. The breakfast is good.

A hotel that seen better days. Its come with good old facilities that were surprisingly still functioning. Room were clean and spacious. Staffs were well dressed and professional. Secured big car park. Hotel located at the Central of the popular Chiang Rai tourism area. Consider more pricey than the nearby hotels.

Older hotel that does many things right. Deluxe room has improvements over superior. Breakfast is so good due to great taste and everything is fresh. Staff are so helpful and nice. Best location in Chiang Rai.

Charming old hotel with 5 star service from the staff. Sunrise and sunset view from the room were beautiful. Complimentary breakfast has a Nescafé espresso machine which about 10 options to choose from including flat white, which I loved. Also lots of restaurants and bars, stores and massage shops are all walking distance. Would definitely comeback.

Considering this is in "downtown" Chiang Rai and in very close proximity to the night bazaar, this hotel was worth the low cost. It is outdated but I didn't bother looking into when it was constructed. We stayed in a double twin bed room. Rooms are spacious enough to store luggage and still have plenty to move around. Beds are comfy enough to sleep in (again not a luxuriously soft bed). Plenty of parking space since we rented a car and drove around Chiang Rai. The highlight of the stay was the included breakfast buffet to get our day started. They offer American and Asian options, plenty of seating. I would go back and stay here again if I'm back in Chiang Rai.

Buddhist temple
Place of worship
Nestled on the banks of the Kok River, Wat Tham Phra (Buddha Cave Temple) offers a serene escape from city life. Visitors can observe wild macaque monkeys playing and swinging from trees, as well as bathing in the turquoise lake alongside catfish. The temple's interior is located within a cave where bats frolic, and lucky visitors may witness monks praying. A steep staircase leads to the cave inside the mountain and a viewpoint offering stunning panoramic views of the area.
This place is definitely cool! You'll be leaving your shoes down below so plan to go barefoot up the staircase and the very high ceilings and even the bats hanging out in segments of the cave. There were Buddhist monks down below tending to the property also and it's right next to the river with another Big Shiny Buddha along the river make sure you walk around the back side to find it! This is free and well worth it
Brian B — Google review
To be honest, there are much better Buddha caves that you can find around all of Thailand. This one might be cool, but since I came during rain season, most of it was blocked off.

Hide Gem. Beautiful temple built in naturally formed cave. If you go male sure you.make your way down towards the river there is a hidden spot in the side of the mountain and a statue on the river that are a must see as well
Damon H — Google review
The temple is located down towards the Kok river, and is spread out over the area. Here you have a temple that is located between the Buddha Cave and the Buddha statue that towers over the river, all located in a natural area. If you are going to experience everything, and you should once you are there, then it is good to calculate some time. Parking is available both inside the temple area, and outside the entrance.
John S — Google review
Nice cave, there was nobody when I was there, only one monk and a cute orange cat in the cave. It smells in there, I think it’s the bats poop. But very impressive when you’re in there
Jana G — Google review
Nice. Small. Off the beaten track. It's just by the river. We were the only people there when we arrived for 10 minutes (besides 1 monk). The side part of the buddha cave is flooded and taped off (rainy season). You can also donate money in a box to help with the electricity bill for the lights.
Rebecca T — Google review
Updates (April 2025) Kok River might be drying up but Wat Tham Phra a cave temple still stands proudly admits the catastrophe of flood, earthquake and the prolong drought in Chiang Rai, a spiritual sanctuary. The temple grounds are hard and dry due to the prolong drought, in addition Wat Tham Phra does not provides visitors with panoramic views but the cultural enrichment and natural beauty is worth your journey. There are no recent significant changes or incidents at Wat Tham Phra that warrants attention. Written in 2017. Small cave located away from the city overlooking the Kok river. Inside the cave you'll find images of Buddha and several other deities. The place is quiet and air is cooling. You definitely won't find it in the city.

Baan Jaru is a charming family-run hotel with clean and spacious rooms, offering a comfortable stay in Thailand. The friendly and helpful staff, including the English-speaking son, provide great local tips and suggestions. The hotel's convenient location near various amenities makes it an ideal choice for travelers. Guests appreciate the delicious breakfast and thoughtful amenities such as mosquito nets on windows. With its welcoming atmosphere and top-notch service, Baan Jaru comes highly recommended for a delightful stay in the area.
The room was comfortable and the breakfast was a nice combination of fruit, toast and jam, "omelette" (eggs), and coffee/tea/juice. But what made our experience special were the staff, all of which made us feel very welcome. In particular, Toddy is a fountain of excellent recommendations of where to eat, what to do and associated logistics--all with great cheer and a fun sense of humour. He's been working at Baan Jaru for 12 years so he's fluent on what tourists might be looking for. He hooked us up with a great day long tour)--this one is similar to the the usual circuit but I appreciated the choices of Karen souvenir market, opium museum, golden triangle over and tea plantation instead of hot springs (which would have taken a lot of time).

Great room, nice and clean. Not sure why this place is rated as two stars, it should be more. They serve some fruits, toasts and eggs for breakfast. Walking distance to markets and food. In the early morning is a bit noisy since it is close to a road, but it is not unbearable.

Quiet location, yet accessible hotel for both the centre and night bazaar. Hotel owner gave us an orientation on arrival using an annotated map which proved very useful for our initial explore of the city. Our room was spacious with plenty of space to open two suitcases. King sized bed was also very comfortable. Clean and fresh towels supplied. Air-conditioning was efficient and quiet. Breakfast was eggs made to order with toast and self serve tea, coffee and selection of fruits. Lovely stay in a homestyle hotel.

The girls who made us breakfast in the morning are so sweet and always smiling at us 🙂😍😍 The owner who checked us in gave us a lot of good information about the area around the hotel and what to do. We hope his toe gets better soon because we did not see him last day to say goodbye to him, very very nice man 🙂 The room was quiet and had both AC and fan. They cleaned our rooms every morning with two bottles of water.

Doy Din Dang Pottery เครื่องปั้นดินเผาดอยดินแดง is a pottery studio and gallery located on the outskirts of Chiang Rai, Thailand. The renowned Thai potter, Somluk Pantiboon, combines his international training with a local touch to create practical and decorative ceramics using natural glazes made from rice, bamboo, ash, and wood.
I loved this place. It was such a peaceful serene place remind me of hiking in the forest in Japan and come across structure that sells things. Also I came during the wettest part of monsoon season and the drizzle makes the place even more airy tale like. Not many places can claim their are being artsy and earthy at the same time and Doy Din Dang Pottery is exactly that. Their coffee shop was super cute. I loved the fact that they serve drinks and a place for the customers to enjoy and soaked in the environment we are in far from the hustle and bustle of the crowds. Since it was a very quiet day, I was fortunate to be able to spend sometime there for a production tour and met the owner whose works were displayed for his customer to enjoy. They do custom work for small batch and big batch productions for hospitality industry yet plenty of the work was one of a kind. Their pottery products range from small tea cup to human size vases. The service was phenomenal. They boxed my stuff with all the padding necessary and secured with industrial packing tape with handle. All ready to be checked in. It was so convenient.
C M — Google review
This was such a quiet and lovely place, love it! If you ask me how it looks like, I can say this was so artsy yet earthy. There are lots of pottery works displays, place beautifully. Therefore, you need to be careful with your stuff and step! There is also a coffee shop, sadly I didnt have the chance to tried their food and beverages. But its good knowing there’s a place who serves art and silence in the crowded surroundings. When I went there, there wasn’t much visitors so I was able to watch how the workers make the pottery.
Zelza A — Google review
I stumbled across this place in an article and decided to stop by. I had to take a grab because it’s a ways out from the main area. It was so worth it because I ended up buying five pieces that I can’t wait to showcase in my home. The lady who was working there also spoke English and was super friendly. The power was out when I visited and they gave me a flashlight to look at all of their things. When you first enter, you need to walk down a little path to get to the main shop - even if they look closed, make sure to look around because when I was visiting, the power was out, but they were still open.
Savannah — Google review
What a quaint studio/shop! I have not heard of Somluk Pantiboon before visiting, but now I understand he is a national-level ceramics artist. Beautiful, interesting pieces, albeit a little dusty. Glazes are from rice stalks, charcoal, etc. Prices are reasonable and they will bubble wrap your purchases for you.
YJ K — Google review
Visitors to Ban Doi Din Daeng can witness the entire process of ceramic creation, including shaping, carving, drying, and glazing. Beautiful ceramic pieces are displayed both indoors and outdoors. In addition to admiring the artistry, the tranquil setting offers a relaxing atmosphere. There’s a small café on-site where you can enjoy a cup of coffee served in handcrafted ceramic ware. Adjacent to the café is a shop selling a wide variety of exquisite handmade ceramics. As these ceramics are meticulously handcrafted, they may be pricier than factory-made pieces, but their quality and craftsmanship are assured
Jintana K — Google review
What an inspiring place, architecturally and the ceramics themselves, went home with both a book on the architecture and ceramic pieces. A must visit for creatives. The master potter has made his vision a reality ⭐️
Aarish N — Google review
A comprehensive venue for ceramics production. There're multiple buildings in the area dedicated for displaying the selling products, cafe, gallery, and pottery production. The place is being expanded to a land on another side of the road. There're also electrically rotating stations for visitors to try to work on shaping the clay. The owner of Doi Din Dang Poterry Somluck Pantiboon received a ceramics training from Japan, so the style leans towards Japanese style. Each pottery here is an art piece, and those in the discount shop are more plain and affordable. This is a school that provides trainings/internships to students with exhibitions and collaborations with a wider artistic community.

On Saturday nights, Chiang Rai comes alive with the vibrant 'Saturday Night Market' on Thanalai Road. This bustling walking street is lined with an array of food stalls offering delicious Thai snacks. The market stretches from Thipanet Road to the ancient gate of Chiang Mai, making it easy to navigate. Mind blowing!! Been to Canada/Vietnam/Korea/Japan/Singapore/Bangkok night markets, but Saturday Night Market in Chiang Rai is incredible. We biked 5 min from our homestay and parked one the road (unlocked). The local was super friendly (they dont speak English well but went above to help you). Plenty of food vendors and local goods. We actually just walked half of the market cuz it is way too big lol. Bought some food and Thai dessert and they were delicious.
Nhi L — Google review
Such a great, classic night market. This is what comes to mind when I think of a night market in Thailand. Right next to it there was live Thai music and people dancing. Very hard to find a table, but there is an area with tables and chairs. We just ate on the grass and it was a vibe. We tried everything from squid egg, skewers, smoothies, dumplings, dessert dumplings, fried oysters, takoyaki, fried pork, and more. There’s also lots of fruit stands and clothing stands. The fried pork, squid eggs, and dumplings were our favourites. Lots of classic Thai foods and desserts to try here for 10-100 baht per piece.
Cassia A — Google review
Definitely worth a visit. This is one of the biggest markets in Chiang Rai. The food and booths offer a variety of options. The street is blocked off for about a block and a half and all the vendors set up on it. Very lively and so much fun.

MUST VISIT It shouldn't be a question. Such an amazing experience. So authentic but international at the same time. It's 2 long streets shaped as a + and there are many small circles and squares with food places and handicraft places. Just saying so you can plan ahead and don't miss out anything. I recommend trying every pandan sweets. If you are still afraid of tasting pandan, don't be, it taste like coconat and vanilla together and it's like a green jelly. So it is NOT matcha.

One of the most lively night market. You will find everything here from shopping, home decor, clothes, souvenirs, street food, massage. For us 3 hours were not enough to explore entire market. We found this marker cheaper than Bangkok, Krabi and Phuket. We bought clothes and had some amazing fresh juices. We recommend everyone to visit this place.

If you're in Chiang Rai on a Saturday, don't miss this night market. There's so many local vendors selling food, fruits, vegetables, clothes, souvenirs and trinkets. They closed of 2 long intersecting streets so there are so many options, you will definitely get full. We had mini coconut ice cream, mango shake, thin crispy pancakes, takoyaki, mini coconut pancakes, Thai spicy hotdogs and fresh fruits. We also a bought cowhide keychain and had our names stamped on it as souvenirs.

Amazing and cozy place! Not the newest building in town but it doesn't take anything from it - definitely worth a stay! The staff are very helpful, friendly, and always with a smile on their face! The room is spacious. The AC is great, decent hot shower. The bathroom is clean (so is the rest of the room). The balconies of the rooms are nice to hangout at, and at the ground level they have a very nice and lush garden with them japanese fish! All and all, definitely more than worth what you pay for! If I were to ever come back to Chiang Rai I would definitely stay here again!!! One thing they could improve on is to offer more power outlets in the room!

I stayed at Baan Warabordee Hotel in Chiang Rai for one night, and it was a fantastic choice for a budget traveler seeking value for money. This charming guesthouse is a hidden gem, offering a great balance of affordability, comfort, and an unbeatable location. Location: The hotel is perfectly situated just a 3-minute walk from the vibrant Chiang Rai Night Bazaar and about 10 minutes from the iconic Chiang Rai Clock Tower. It’s tucked away on a quiet street, which ensures a peaceful night’s sleep while still being close to the action. Local restaurants, convenience stores, and the bus station are all within a short stroll, making it super convenient for a quick exploration of the city. Room & Amenities: The room was clean, air-conditioned, and equipped with the essentials: a comfy bed, refrigerator, free Wi-Fi, and complimentary bottled water. The decor is a bit dated, with rustic wooden furniture that gives it a traditional Thai vibe, but it’s well-maintained and cozy. For a budget hotel, it exceeded expectations. Breakfast: The complimentary breakfast was simple but sufficient—toast, jam, butter, bananas, and coffee or tea, served in the serene garden area. It’s not a lavish spread, but it’s perfect for a quick start to the day, especially at this price point. Service: The staff were friendly, polite, and eager to help. The receptionist provided useful tips about nearby attractions and even assisted with scooter rental arrangements. Check-in and check-out were quick and hassle-free. Value for Money: You get a clean, comfortable room, free breakfast, and a prime location without breaking the bank. It’s ideal for backpackers or anyone looking for an affordable yet pleasant stay. Overall: For a one-day stay, Baan Warabordee is a great pick. Its excellent location, budget-friendly price, and cozy ambiance make it a standout in Chiang Rai. I’d recommend it to anyone visiting for a short trip, especially if you want to be close to the city’s main attractions without spending much. Just don’t expect luxury, and you’ll be delighted with the experience.

Akha Kitchen Thai Cooking Class offers a unique culinary experience for food enthusiasts. The menu features a fusion of Cantonese, Szechuan, and Akha dishes with a touch of Yunnanese influence from Northern Thailand. Participants can expect deep, balanced, and craveable flavors in their chosen menu. The class begins with a personalized trip to the local market where unique foods are explored and tasted.
Other than comfy shoes and a camera, there’s no need to worry about a thing for this class. Whatever menu you choose, you will get flavors that are deep, balanced, uniquely Thai, and craveable. We started the day with a trip to the market where Jaru personalized the experience for us. She probably does this for each group she takes. We got to learn about unique foods and taste along the way. Back in Jaruwan’s kitchen we arrived to find beautifully presented fruit and tea waiting for us. Then the team moved us through prep and cook stations to dining with such ease, it seemed magical. Every time we entered the next room there was a new stunning presentation. Jaru and her talented team make the whole experience fun, easy, and beautiful at every turn. This was an experience that I will continue to enjoy at home when I make these dishes. Highly recommend.

Did the cooking class with my wife and 3 teenage kids and we all loved it. Loved to go to the market, prepare the food, cook, and the best part: EAT... Jaru, the chef was very knowledgeable, patient and welcoming. Loved the Sapi Tong. A very easy, vegetarian Akha dipping sauce for both steamed and raw vegetables. Like a vegan Anchoïade, but tastier and healthier... Absolutely recommend!

I’ve taken cooking classes before, but this one is a cut above the rest. There was so much finesse in the details, and the 3 Akha girls that work there are absolutely ADORABLE. The Akha dish that you learn to make is so unique and yummy! I thought it was really special because you really aren’t going to learn to make it anywhere else in Thailand. There was SO much food, I was literally stuffed! Jaru bought us Thai coffees this morning during the market tour and then there was a fridge stocked with free drinks, a really appreciated bonus. Our group chose to make Pad See Eww, Tom Yum Goong, Green Curry, and a pumpkin/coconut milk dessert and everything was so delicious! I couldn’t believe how Authentic everything I made tasted.

A very very good experience and class. We really enjoyed learning the recipes and we had a fantastic teacher. Delicious food and a great thing to do in Chiang Rai.

My wife and I really enjoyed learning how to make authentic Thai food! The class was easy to follow. We also enjoyed learning a little about the culture and food markets in Thailand. We highly recommend this cooking class!

Our last day in ching rai, had a great day with sweet akha girls and enjoyable cooking class. We went to a local market for some tasting of local food, then we shop for the ingredients we are gonna use later. Back to the house, we were welcomed with fruits and house made drinks. Only the first salad is from akha, I like it a lot. We get to make our own curry paste, Tom yum gong soup, Pad Thai and mango sticky rice dessert. All very delicious, we exchange to taste other classmates dish, is funny how we follow the one direction and all came out different. Love it how they make it so easy, clean and fun to learn Thai cooking. Their house decoration is nice too, look around and ask about tables, chairs or accessories. The best part of talking to local people or classmates from other countries, is you get to know many stories.

We had so much fun learning how to make Thai food and Akha food. The food was delicious and it was so easy to learn even for an inexperienced cook like me. I’m ready to show off for friends back home. Highly recommend this class.

I've previously been to other cooking classes, where they are large and impersonal and use so many pre-made foods. This one definitely stands out as different. You start with the amazing sights and sounds and smells of a local market with Jaruwan providing a 360 view of what makes up the foundation of Thai cooking. She even suggests things to just get little taste of in the market. She is knowledgeable in knowing what is in season, what to look for when buying certain produce and if in your country, maybe some ingredients are impossible to find, she gave suggestions to use instead. Loved that! The Akha Kitchen itself is the smoothest operation! The set up allows for a more hands-on cooking class where Jaruwan can lend you personal assistance to making some truly yummy dishes. Learn how to make curry paste from scratch, hello! The sous chefs never dropped the ball. They presented perfect plating with beautiful garnishes and had everything set up without us even realizing what was happening in the next room. Everything was so clean too. You can tell they have a passion for what they do. Well, well, WELL worth the time and money spent! And you can go home and impress your friends and family with your new skills 😝

Botanical garden
Nestled within the serene grounds of Mae Fah Luang University, the Mae Fah Luang University Botanical Garden is a hidden gem that beautifully showcases nature's diversity. This expansive garden features an impressive collection of rare flowers from around the globe, with seasonal blooms ensuring there's always something vibrant to admire throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls along well-maintained paths while soaking in the tranquil atmosphere and fresh air.
Not huge, but very picturesque and, more importantly, knowledgeable place, separated into several areas, each of which is really great.

We sought for a lovely garden to see during our Chiang Rai road trip. happened to come across this garden and decided to give it a shot. The view of the university and the driveway's tree lane make for a lovely combination. First impressions are favorable. Nice enviroment includes the woodland. Various themed gardens can be found here. Only the fern garden by the creek, which is actually very attractive, was among the themed gardens truly worth visiting. Simply said, it's more akin to a landscape park and isn't really worth bearing the name botanical garden. We went to the rare plant garden and the climber garden, but they don't appear to be properly maintained, and the plants have a sad appearance.

many gardens don't have anything in them, yet the signs suggest they're fully operational. the place needs better signage to guide guests where to go, and what is opened or not.

Beautiful enough to take a trip out of the way to visit. You can spend under half an hour, or many hours here depending on your purpose. There are small markets, a few cafes and some lovely stores nearby. The staff were all very friendly and the grounds are extremely well-kept. Get a yogurt mulberry popsicle afterward!

Nice garden, we appreciated it a lot but unfortunately, the cows are in really bad conditions. Please take care of them !

Transportation service
To reach Chiang Rai by land, travelers can take a bus from Chiang Mai's Arcade Bus Station, with Greenbus being the most popular choice. The journey duration from Chiang Mai is approximately three hours, and buses depart frequently throughout the day. It should be noted that unlike Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai does not have a railway network connection.
Perfectly choreographed organised chaos, Thai style. Love it.
Paul — Google review
This is a parking lot for the buses, if you want to go to the actual bus station, go to the Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 1 (1 minute walk, just cross the road). Buses to the White Temple, Chiang Mai etc depart from the terminal 1.
Marija M — Google review
Buses depart from here while the other terminal is under construction. Hard to navigate, all dirt and mud, barely anything is labeled, no bathroom. Also filled with tuk-tuk and songthaew drivers that will relentlessly harangue you to ride with them as soon as you are in earshot--par for the course in Thailand yes, but particularly bad here. Hopefully that renovation is done soon.
Andrew B — Google review
Now the buses to chiang kong are leaving from the other bus terminal (2 min walk), same place as those for chiang mai. Don't wait here for nothing ;)
Elisa P — Google review
Central location, within walking distance to Night Bazaar. Songthaew to Bus Terminal 2 at Baht20 but need to wait. Bus to Phayao at Baht66 and to Chiang Klong (for Houay Xai of Laos) at Baht65.

what a mess if it just rained. anyway its not huge, so its ok to find out where you have to go

(Translated by Google) The bus station is clean, right in the Baaza nightlife area, near cheap hostels and delicious restaurants (Original) Bến xe sạch sẽ, ngay khu phố đêm Baaza , gần các hostel giá rẻ gần các quán ăn ngon

(Translated by Google) You can take a bus here to the White Temple, as well as another bus to the Black Temple / The Black Houses / The Black Museum (the Black Temple, a really strange art gallery). It's well organized, even though it's a temporary place (in April 2017 they seemed to be renovating the other main bus station). From memory, the bus to the White Temple cost 20 or 30 bath; same thing for the bus to the Black Temple.
