Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple, is a contemporary Buddhist temple located in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Designed by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, it features a unique white exterior with intricate designs and unconventional architecture. Inside, visitors can explore unusual murals and decorations along with odd sculptures. The temple aims to provide a space for learning and meditation to promote the teachings of Buddhism.
This was my first time to visit this temple. Make sure you are wearing skirts down to the knee if you go there. The entry was 100B and it is worth it. It is truly unique. It focuses on death a lot in the beginning but changes throughout. The level of artistry is at a great level. Everything is very manicured and beautiful. It has on the temple grounds the most beautiful bathrooms you have ever seen. I recommend checking this temple out.

Absolutely stunning temple, it’s a shame tourists can’t respect the culture though. During our time at the temple we heard the man over the speaker repeatedly tell the same people to cover themselves. They kept removing their coverings to take their insta shots. Honestly, wake up to yourself. If you can’t come to a country and respect the culture, go home. No one wants you here. Obviously there’s going to be people everywhere at tourist attractions. So fine. But don’t be rude and act like you’re the only one there. To get into the temple you have to cross a narrow bridge / walkway. There is a recording telling people not to block this. Sure enough there was a couple on the walkway taking selfies completely blocking the way with total disregard for the 20 - 30 people trying to get across. Until I walked in front of their camera that is. If you’re going to come here, respect the culture and other people or don’t bother because you honestly just look like an absolute flog. P.s. don’t forget there’s more to see here than just the white temple itself.

The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) in Chiang Rai is one of Thailand’s most surreal sights — pure white, shimmering with mirrored glass under the sun. The details feel almost otherworldly, blending Buddhist symbolism with modern art. Photos are allowed outside but not inside, where the murals surprise you with unexpected imagery. Visit early morning to avoid glare and crowds. It’s both art and reflection in one unforgettable stop.
Noel M — Google review
Milling crowds of tourists. Que up for 25 minutes or so. But here is the catch a National Artist from Chiang Rai decided with his own money to create the crystal white of Buddha's Metta: Compassion in his artistic imagination. The Chinese style architecture with embedded glass work give the place a dazzling aura. It is not the temples that he conceived he conceived the whole landscaping. Sky, water, earth, mountains, shrubs and trees! But what surprised me that I did not see too many birds. May be the cacophony of milling crowds daunted them! It's a vast area through which you can leisurely amble enjoying gurgling water, fountains spraying cool comfort, and children really feeling joyous.I saw a senior monk walk out of the monastery building. Besides the use of bridge as a symbol of transiting from mundane materialism to spirituality of loving compassion is very well utilized by the savant artist. The Golden bridge that connects you to a hall where hundreds of Ganesha are created by another artist. The piece de resistance is the white temple that has a full wall Buddha painting. The painting in terms of artistic creation is in line with traditional iconography of Buddha. It is not the interior but the exterior of this building that is stunning with white purity against blue sky, surrounded by liquidity of water and as I said a symbolic bridge connecting the temple to higher realms. When you come out of the main temple and view it from different viewing points that you realise that it is an ethereal ship surrounded by water and changing by changing sun light. For sure sun rise and sun down must be the best time to connect with ethereal glory. Lastly macabre art is also hanging by tree branches.
Vijay K — Google review
Its a beautiful temple for pictures taking. The white colour with chrome trimmed scriptures and building design really stands out especially during the sun light. Was really impressed with the toilet too which was painted in gold. Its gets crowded with Tourists and buses. There were quite a numbers of eateries here hence can dropby for meals too.

Wat Rong Khun (The White Temple) in Chiang Rai feels like stepping into a dream — pure white, mirror details catching the light, and architecture unlike anywhere else. It’s art, spirituality, and imagination blended into one surreal experience. Every corner has symbolism, from the path of life and karma to the bridge toward enlightenment. It’s peaceful, meaningful, and visually stunning — a place that inspires you to slow down and reflect. ✅ Unique modern Buddhist architecture ✅ Stunning details & symbolic design ✅ Beautiful photo spots
Vilaijit T — Google review
The temple itself is very beautiful, with its white surface and embedded mirrors that reflect the sunlight and make the temple shine in the sun. The beautiful atmosphere is a bit disturbed by its popularity and the constant announcements repeated over loudspeaker, telling people to continue walking and not to take pictures within the temple. You can find tons of references to modern pop-culture across the temple grounds. The biggest attraction is probably the entrance, where you can walk over a bridge that is surrounded by a lake of hands reaching out to you.
HikeForHappiness — Google review
The most beautiful and breathtaking temple we visited during our trip to Thailand. The intricate details and shimmering white design are truly mesmerizing — photos don’t do it justice! Try to visit early in the morning or close to closing time to avoid the large crowds and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Art museum
Museums
Baan Dam Museum, also known as the Black House, is a unique collection of wood buildings showcasing the artworks of Thawan Duchanee and other contemporary Thai artists. Situated in Chiang Rai, it is part of a day tour that includes visits to prominent temples such as the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Sueur Ten). The museum offers an intriguing experience with its dark-themed architecture and displays.
Great place for people looking for something different! I first came here ten plus years ago and the artist's work made a deep impression on me. His paintings exude strong strokes, and seeing paintings was worth the trip alone. Original paintings can be seen in the galleries next to the parking lot. The main structure on the museum grounds contains prints. One thing that stands out is the artist's prolific collection of things. Some interesting buildings on the grounds, one of which is reminiscent of a traditional house in Sulawesi (also some statues that looked Balinese in origin). Everything is visually engaging, definitely not a typical Thai attraction. There are artisans in the back building wood working, which was great to see as well. One staff said before COVID the museum would receive two to three thousand guests per day, but now visitors number around 500 per day. There are plenty of tourists here but it doesn't feel overcrowded. Well worth the visit.
Brian J — Google review
Another must do. Very unique contemporary art museum. This place will keep you entertained and interested for quite a while, there are lots of very unique and different displays both housed in indoor and outdoor areas over quite a large complex. Lots to see and quite memorable.

I like Thai traditional painting and wood carving art. So this place is amazing for me. Peace but deliver to strong message about real life and greedy in human spirit. Love this place.
Tanadchai A — Google review
The Black House (Baan Dam Museum) in Chiang Rai is haunting and unforgettable — a mix of art, philosophy, and raw symbolism. Created by national artist Thawan Duchanee over 30 years, the complex features more than 40 black teak buildings filled with animal bones, horns, and surreal sculptures. Each structure reflects themes of life, death, and rebirth drawn from Buddhist and animist beliefs. It’s not a temple but an artist’s dark reflection on human nature. Come early for a quieter visit — the stillness makes it even more powerful.
Noel M — Google review
Not particularly my cup of tea but might prove fascinating to some. Not really a museum as much as an art gallery/instillation. Quirky enough to be worth a quick stop for 80 bhat and a large garden with many extra small buildings to walk around and into too. Our favourite part was banging on the very large gong and TomTom drum ;)
Gillian H — Google review
Baan Dam Museum aka Black Museum was created by Thai artist Thawan Duchanee. It is basically a private art museum/gallery made up of around 40 various sizes and designes buildings almost are of them are painted in black. Building materials are dark wood, terracotta, glass, black coloured brick etc. The inside displays are mostly made of animal bones, animal structures, animal skins and horns etc. Sometimes it gives a very eery feel. Entrance fee is 80 Thai Baht per person.
Rajib B — Google review
I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but this place was disappointing and quite sad. It costs 80 baht to get in, and while they say there are 40 houses, several of them are just toilets. The space feels random — lots of touristy shops that don’t really fit the theme. The art is made almost entirely from dead animals, which is honestly overwhelming and disturbing. There’s a dead crocodile in nearly every room and horns everywhere. It just felt more macabre than meaningful. They also have what they call a “cat rescue,” but the cats are kept in small cages and clearly distressed. A few were pacing in circles like zoo animals. If they really want to help, they should let them roam free and actually care for them properly — it was hard to watch. Additionally the water buffalo and cows are tied up on small ropes. There’s no information about the art or the artist anywhere, except for one pamphlet that’s only in Thai. Overall, it felt uninformative, exploitative, and not worth the visit. I wouldn’t recommend it or go back.

Flea & Street Markets
Chiang Rai Night Bazaar is a bustling and compact night market that offers a variety of experiences. Visitors can explore street food stalls, shop for apparel, jewelry, and gifts, and enjoy live entertainment. The market is located near the ancient temple in Mueang Chiang Rai district, which holds historical significance in the province. It features the prominent Emerald Buddha and other magnificent Buddha statues. Additionally, the area around Jedyod road offers backpacker bars and affordable dining options.
Nice and big bazaar. Basically similar to other night market in Thailand, but this one has more vendor, from housewares, toys, accessories, collectibles, veggies, fruits, juices, and mostly food. People walk one way, and turn to the other side of the road for the opposite direction. Hundreds of varieties of food, but mostly satay/grilled and fried food. I love especially Thai traditional snacks that has coconut milk in it. Very tasty and must try. There's also a few local musicians/talents that show their skills. And you can also dance or sit with locals in the huge area where people gather to dance, sit, and eat. If you're in Chiang Rai on a Saturday night, this market is a must visit.
Irene S — Google review
The food centre at the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar has a wide variety of local Thai food stalls. There’s a stage for live music, which usually adds a lively vibe—but during our visit, it was raining and the low season, so there were plenty of empty seats. Still, we had a great time! We ordered a hotpot that came with a generous basket of vegetables and a large plate of meat, prawns, and cuttlefish—all for just 200 baht. It sounded too good to be true, so we asked three times to confirm the price—and yes, it really was that affordable! We also got vegetarian gyoza from another stall and finished our meal with a tasty box of mango sticky rice for 50 baht. There are many stalls offering a good range of local dishes, so it’s easy to find something you’ll enjoy. Highly recommend this place for a casual and budget-friendly dinner. By the way, we had a fabulous massage just a 3-minute walk away at Chiang Rai Nice Massage. Definitely worth checking out while you're in the area!

The Saturday Night Market in Chiang Rai is one of the most impressive and lively markets I’ve ever visited. Stretching for what feels like kilometers, the walk through the market is long and seemingly endless, filled with a vibrant mix of food, culture, and shopping. It’s a true sensory experience that captures the spirit of northern Thailand. The food selection is absolutely massive. You’ll find everything from Lanna-style rice dishes, fried pork and chicken, pad Thai, braised pork rice, to sweet treats like Thai pancakes, fruit desserts, and colorful cakes. I personally tried the fried omelette rice and fried pork—both were cooked perfectly, full of flavor and very satisfying. The tom yum soup I had was also rich and delightfully spicy, a perfect example of authentic Thai cuisine. Beyond food, the market offers rows of clothing stalls, handmade souvenirs, and traditional crafts. While most items are reasonably priced, it's good to stay aware of tourist mark-ups. A little bargaining goes a long way here. Adding to the festive atmosphere is live cultural entertainment, including traditional Thai dance performances right in the middle of the street. Locals and tourists alike are encouraged to join in and enjoy the rhythm, adding a wholesome community feel to the market. Whether you're there to shop, eat, or just soak in the atmosphere, the Saturday Night Market in Chiang Rai is an unforgettable experience. It's a must-visit for anyone looking to explore the local culture in an authentic and exciting way.
Alex C — Google review
Must do in Chiang Rai, this little Thailand town is most alive at night. Most of the vendors are sweet and no pressure. But some of the best deals we found on zipperless luggage, and clothes souvenirs were at this market. For example, I purchased a brand new crocodile skin wallet (2 tone), high quality for 950 TB ($29 USD). Crazy! The Thai food is always amazing and please interact with the Thai people, they are the best. Tip - take the Tuk Tuk taxi’s every you can, they are unforgettable! We got the “wild ride of Mr. Toad” more than once! Highly recommend the night bazaar!
Steven N — Google review
Very different from the night markets in the South. Quiet and spread over a couple of streets, it has 2 central venues with a stage, one offering western music and another Thai music, both live. There are eateries surrounding the stage and has a party atmosphere about it. Kids running around and and parents doing their own things. Did so clothes shopping. The bust stand is the landmark if you have to Google maps it.
Christopher P — Google review
The Chiang Rai Night Bazaar is one of the highlights of visiting this laid-back northern city. Unlike the larger and more touristy markets in Chiang Mai, the bazaar here feels cozy, relaxed, and very local in atmosphere. The market is not overwhelming in size, but it has everything you’d want: rows of stalls selling handmade crafts, clothing, and souvenirs at very fair prices. You’ll find unique hill-tribe textiles, wooden carvings, and locally designed jewelry, making it a great spot to pick up gifts. Bargaining is possible, but most prices are already reasonable. One of the best parts is the food court area, where you can sample an amazing variety of northern Thai street food—from grilled meats and noodle soups to sweet treats and fresh fruit smoothies. There’s often live music or cultural performances on stage, which adds to the warm, festive vibe while you eat. What makes this night bazaar stand out is its friendly, unhurried energy. It doesn’t feel like a tourist trap, but more like a community gathering where visitors are simply welcome. Tip: Arrive a bit early (around 6–7 PM) to beat the crowds and get a good seat near the stage if you want to enjoy the performances with your dinner.
Rutya W — Google review
Cozy place to spend the evening at. You’ll find stands for food and local entertainment, which includes local music and dancing. Almost felt part of the Chiang Rai community thanks to the lovely vibes that this place has at night. Strongly recommended
Luca L — Google review
Highly recommend stopping by this Bazaar if you are spending the night in Chiang Rai. It is a must! The food, clothes, and souvenirs are MUCH cheaper here than in Bangkok and Ayutthama. The live music is great and the food at Chiang Mai Night Bay is amazing.

Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple, is a unique and spectacular attraction in North Thailand. It serves as both a temple and an art gallery, featuring contemporary murals that offer thought-provoking scenes related to life, death, and human suffering. While the entrance fee is 100 baht, many visitors find it worth the price for the amazing experience. The temple's appearance surpasses its pictures and is considered a must-visit tourist spot.

Specialty Museums
Oub Kham Museum is a unique destination that showcases the rich tribal history of Northern Thailand. While it may not be as well-known as other cultural sites, this museum provides an in-depth look at the thousand-year history of the Tai people and Lanna culture. The private collections on display include ancient artifacts, textiles, Buddha images, and everyday items from Julasak Suriyachai's family, who has royal lineage in Lanna.
This is such a beautifull historical museum with so many cultural object about former Kingdoms in Thailand, especially the Lanna Kingdom. It is a little bit expensive (300 baht adult), but holidays costs more so I think it is worth visiting it. We, 3 people, were the only ones so we got a private tour. When you visit Chiang Rai, this museum must be on your bucket list! And afterwards you should drink a perfect cup of Akha coffee, out of the museum left, cross the streets and then 20 mtrs.
Martin D — Google review
The museum is interesting, but the way it’s presented needs to be improved. I was alone there, and the guide didn’t seem very happy to show me around. She even complained to me that she was tired from climbing the stairs up and down, as she had just filled in for someone. If you don’t want to say the same thing over and over again hundreds of times, put up signs or provide audio guides so visitors can learn about each item and enjoy their time. I spent two hours there—mostly waiting for guides—and they kept trying to rush through the tour. In the end, I regretted spending 200 Baht here. I could have gotten a massage instead.

This place is a must. Not only is the exhibition full of interesting stuff, some of which you will not see anywhere else, but they offer an English-speaking guide who is very nice and knowledgeable. There are many places to appreciate the craft of Thai people, but this visit really helps to understand the meaning of the objects. The entrance is 300 baht for adults, but keep in mind that this includes the guide. And it is very well worth it!

Absolutely great museum of Mekong region, especially Burmese cultural heritage, all fruits of lifelong efforts of a true enthusiast, who hassprciguvally studied history and museum management just to organize this enormous and precious collection, some of exhibits of which are as old as 1400 years! Thank you very much for preserving this priceless heritage and for letting our and future generations to get good look at it.

Perhaps not as large or stately as any of the other museums we all know elsewhere in the world.. but this museum certainly offers a breathtaking view of the past... some artifacts dating back 3000 years, others 1250 years... and the costumes on display could even rival that of the Ziegfield follies. Expect to pay 300THB per adult..(this is a private museum and most of this goes to upkeep and maintenance) Not all artifacts may be photographed and your guide will advise when and where possible or permitted and several rooms are shoes off.. Once the formal tour is completed offer a tip as gratuity, it will be very well received. The tour ends with some green tea in the reception room. Worth the stop and if you are a devotee of the Buddhist faith, some halls also offer places of worship and relics to view. On a lighter note, some rooms are simply claustrophobic with all the items displayed as you get a glimpse of how royalty from previous kingdoms could perhaps have lived. Come and see!

It's got an interesting collection. Very packed, and lots to see... though the arrangement is a bit weird and reminds me a bit of Ripley museums but not as tacky. Very informative tour of about 5 chambers included in the 300 bhat fee. You will need about an hour an a half there, about 1 hour for the tour and 30min to stroll around outside and take some photos. This is to be included if you want something out of ordinary, and if you are spending a few days at Chiang Rai.

Really nice museum, with a wonderful collection of historical items from old Norther kingdom, Chinese kingdoms, Shan and Chin kingdoms. It’s a luxurious collection that shows well the past and the culture of different ethnic groups ! Totally worth the visit ! And we had an really nice lady as a guide from the museum. She did explain everything really well. We had such a nice time and at the end, they do serve you some green tea. 100% recommended !

Wat Rong Suea Ten, also known as the Blue Temple, is a modern Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai. It stands out with its striking sapphire blue exterior and intricate golden detailing. Visitors can explore this monumental temple as part of a day tour that includes other prominent temples such as the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and the Black House (Baandam Museum).
We visited this temple are were impressed with the blue colour scheme. The art work is very detailed with mythical creatures and the main shrine hall is a burst of blue. Entrance is free and we spent some time exploring the temple. We enjoyed our visit very much.

Wat Rong Suea Ten, also known as the Blue Temple, is one of Chiang Rai’s most stunning and modern temples. Designed by a student of Chalermchai Kositpipat, the creator of the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), it beautifully combines traditional Thai Buddhist architecture with striking contemporary design. The temple’s vivid blue and gold tones immediately catch your eye, creating an atmosphere that feels both mystical and serene. Once you enter the main hall, you’ll be amazed by the enormous white Buddha statue sitting gracefully in the center. The surrounding interior glows with intricate paintings in deep shades of blue and turquoise, symbolizing wisdom and purity. Every corner of the temple showcases fine craftsmanship — from the naga serpents at the entrance to the detailed wall murals that tell Buddhist stories. Wat Rong Suea Ten is not only a visual masterpiece but also a place of peaceful energy. The temple isn’t as crowded as the White Temple, making it easier to enjoy quietly and reflect spiritually. Outside, small vendors sell souvenirs, snacks, and local desserts, adding a lively touch without disturbing the temple’s calmness. The service from the local caretakers and housekeeping team deserves praise. The area is kept spotless, the walkways are well-maintained, and even during busy hours, the atmosphere remains clean and inviting. They are friendly and polite, always greeting visitors with a smile and offering help when needed. Overall, Wat Rong Suea Ten is a must-visit destination in Chiang Rai — a perfect blend of creativity, spirituality, and Thai artistry that leaves every visitor in awe.

Beautiful temple to understand thai architecture mixed with modern and contemporary art. Very detailed work. It is a stunning modern temple known for its vibrant blue and gold design. Built on the site of an old temple once abandoned for a century, it was completed in 2016 by a student of Chalermchai Kositpipat, the artist behind the White Temple. The temple blends traditional Thai art with modern creativity, making it a mesmerizing symbol of spiritual beauty and contemporary artistry. The naga (serpent guardians) at the entrance protect the temple and symbolize power, water, and transformation. You can see these different types of guardians protecting the temples in buddhist culture.

You definitely won’t miss this temple. The vibrant blue color is incredibly striking. But what truly caught my attention was the wall art, especially the detailed paintings depicting the life story of Sakyamuni Buddha. The artwork is beautiful and full of meaning. No entrance fee. Proper attire is required to enter, but no worries as they provide sarongs. There’s some ongoing renovation and construction, so hopefully there’ll be even more to see in the future.
Hm L — Google review
In all honesty this beats the white temple hands down for sheer visitability. Same creative flair but more compact and with way less visitors. Also actually in use as a Buddhist temple, just with added Disneyland vibes in the most Thai way imaginable. Just take a taxi and spend 30 minutes here, you won't regret it unless you have an aversion to the color blue or fun

It's simpler more commonly used name is "The Blue Temple" Came on a weekday, lots of crowds but nonetheless a beautiful temple with intricate detailed carvings on the temple and it's surroundings. The Ice Cream is nice!! 👍🏽👍🏽 It's like a treat you need to try once at the Temple. I call it the "Mango Sticky R'ice Cream"

Wat Rong Suea Ten, also known as the Blue Temple, is a contemporary Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand, renowned for its vibrant blue and gold color scheme. Wat Rong Suea Ten literally means House of Dancing Tigers. It stands out with its striking sapphire blue exterior, which is not a common color for Thai temples. The temple is a blend of traditional Thai architectural elements and modern artistic designs, creating a visually stunning and spiritually significant space. 🌀💙🫐🧿 Entrance fee is 100 Thai Baht for foreigners.

My visit to the Blue Temple, or Wat Rong Suea Ten, in Chiang Rai was absolutely mesmerizing! This temple is a vibrant masterpiece, with its stunning blue facade and intricate gold accents that shimmer under the sun. The moment I stepped inside, I was blown away by the vivid murals depicting Buddhist stories, adorned with rich hues of blue and pops of color that make every corner Instagram-worthy. The giant Buddha statue at the center, surrounded by ornate carvings, radiates a serene yet powerful presence, making it perfect for quiet reflection or simply soaking in the artistry. What sets this temple apart is its modern yet deeply cultural vibe, blending traditional Thai elements with contemporary design. The dragon motifs at the entrance (inspired by the temple’s name, "Dancing Tiger") are jaw-dropping, and the entire place feels alive with creativity. The grounds are clean, well-maintained, and surprisingly tranquil despite its popularity. Entry is free, though donations are appreciated, and there are small stalls nearby for snacks or souvenirs. The local staff were warm and welcoming, adding to the positive experience. I loved how accessible the temple is—located just a short drive from Chiang Rai’s city center, it’s easy to combine with visits to the White Temple or Black House. Whether you’re a culture enthusiast, a photographer, or just looking for a peaceful escape, the Blue Temple is a must-see. Pro tip: Visit in the early morning for fewer crowds and softer light for photos. This gem is a highlight of Chiang Rai and left me in awe of its beauty and spirit!

The taxi driver called this place MYANMAR HOTEL. The room is old and the bathroom is moldy. The bed is VERY VERY HARD. I hate to give a poor review but I couldn't stay. I had to leave to a different hotel. The staff is amazing but for the price the room should be MUCH BETTER.

(Translated by Google) We stayed two nights at the Golden Triangle Palace Hotel and were very happy with this choice. The beds were hard and perfect for a good night's sleep, we slept really well. In the morning there was the possibility of drinking instant coffee and eating delicious bananas from the hotel owner's field. The girl at the reception was very nice to us and friendly. Through the hotel we were able to rent scooters, excellent service as they brought the scooters to the hotel and also picked them up. The staff are so helpful, kind and attentive. We arrived in the afternoon for a short visit and they arranged transport to the attractions within half an hour. If you are looking for a more traditional place, rather than a chain, then I would recommend this place. There's a veranda where you can sit and chill. The room had everything you needed, including both A/C and a ceiling fan (my preference). Excellent value for money. In the evening there were food stalls in the courtyard where food was cooked fresh.

I stayed here for 5 nights and it was perfect for me. Very close to the restaurants, bars and Walking Street but was very quiet at night. Good A/C in the room. Hard bed but I loved that. The owners were so welcoming and helped with tour booking and any other advice that was needed. Free bananas all day and a great cooked breakfast in the morning. For the money it really was fantastic. If I'm back in Chiang Rai, I'll stay here. Thanks!

The Chiang Rai Clock Tower is a stunning architectural masterpiece located in the heart of a traffic circle. Designed by renowned artist and architect Chalermchai Kositpipat, it bears resemblance to the iconic White Temple with its distinctive style. At night, the tower comes alive with colorful lights, creating a surreal environment.
It’s a golden clock that has a light show every hour on the hour starting at 8pm. No tickets, it’s just in the middle of the street. The birds make the experience more dramatic. They are like paid actors moving to the rhythm. However, it’s nothing crazy and can be missed if no time.
Rasha M — Google review
Best time to view the light show is 8pm, where it is dark enough. It runs for approximately 10-15 minutes. Only thing that ruins it is the constant flow of traffic on the round about. But still worth viewing.
Shane H — Google review
The Chiang Rai Clock Tower is one of the city’s most photogenic landmarks, designed by the same artist behind the White Temple. Its golden structure gleams by day, but the real highlight is the evening light show, when it glows in shifting colors set to gentle music (around 7, 8, and 9 p.m.). Located in the city center, it’s easy to stop by after dinner or while exploring nearby cafés. A short but memorable sight that perfectly captures Chiang Rai’s artistic flair.
Noel M — Google review
Located at the cross road of the town. Very nice. Must wait for the clock to chime at the hour. The lights changes colours.

beautiful and have bars, good restaurant around. it have sound when time changes like 8 o’clock and it plays music, the lights change but a lot of birds and kinda smell bird poop

The light show, coupled with the music, will stop you in your tracks. There are many, many birds - can be a bit unsettling. The poop on the streets and vehicles around give you a sense of how many birds there are.

Walking Street Chiang Rai is a bustling market offering a wide range of experiences for visitors. From street-food stands to wooden carvings and batik clothing, the market is filled with options. In addition to shopping and dining, the street also features Thai spas, handcrafted products, folk concerts, and Thai dance shows. Local performers entertain on a mini stage while art and craft stalls showcase their wares.
Such a fun thing to do in Chiang Rai 😊 Just make sure you have your transport sorted. I loved the very interesting shops, the food and the vibe. Truly a community set-up. You can even dance to live music out in the open.

Chiang Rai Walking Street is a vibrant Saturday night experience where Thanalai Road comes alive with local culture, food, and crafts. It is not like Bangkok or Pattaya but have colors. The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, with a strong local vibe that feels authentic rather than overly touristy. You’ll find a wide variety of stalls selling handmade crafts, hill-tribe items, souvenirs, and delicious northern Thai street food like khao soi and grilled sausages. Live music and traditional dance performances add to the charm and create a festive community feel. Prices are reasonable, and it’s a great spot to mingle with locals, try regional dishes, and shop for unique gifts. A great place to explore for a few hours, especially in the early evening before it gets too crowded.

Nestled just a few kilometers from the heart of Chiang Rai, Mae Fah Luang Art and Cultural Park is a serene oasis that beautifully blends nature with cultural heritage. This picturesque park boasts meticulously landscaped gardens, vibrant flowers, and tranquil ponds, making it an ideal spot for leisurely strolls. Visitors can explore the rich history of the Lanna culture through its impressive collection of artifacts housed in various museums within the park. The site also features traditional Buddhist temples that add to its charm.
Completely underrated!!! Go there it’s beautiful also a long walk and the map a bit confusing when high but wonderful. Also the park closes at 16.30 so don’t be like us and leave after the park closes bc you need to jump a fence!

Beautiful Art & Cultural Park which is easy to go . So impressed with a professional guide who explained not only historical part of Buddha images in the north but she shared very interesting insights about Northern traditions. Overall the park is well maintained but there are more promoting of this park more in Tourism. Saw a few tourists there but hardly seen any Thais visited this beautiful park with a beautiful story behind how it was founded . Shall go back there again if i visit Chiengrai.

A perfect park to admire the nature and learn about art and history of the city. There are two halls, one museum, and one gift shop. The park in the middle is decorated with sculptures.
Missberry M — Google review
Beautiful and calming place. Tranquil gardens and lake. The main building is a fantastic structure that houses Lanna artefacts, only issue is its not easy to understand what the objects are as there is no English description. There is a website you can link to that details the history of the objects, but it's not practical to put into translate every piece. Loved the place, and give it 5 stars, but hopefully they will consider changing this so foreigners can learn more about Lanna culture - which I believe is the objective. We were the only people there on a Saturday afternoon. Clearly an under appreciated place.
Matt T — Google review
There are several structures that home hundreds of Lanna relics that are rarely seen at any other places in the world. The relics are showcased in a massive wooden building that replicates how large Lanna Palaces were built hundreds of years ago. In the center is a Buddha statue that is over 300 hundred years old. It was incredible to see the architecture and incredible craftsmanship of all 9 Northern Thailand kingdoms during ancient times. The grounds have beautiful gardens and pathways that are filled with diverse local plants and fauna.

200 bahts/person. The only thing I truly liked were the very beautiful paintings and the nature. I was thrilled to see Sa-ngiam Yarangsee (born 15 November 1970, Chiang Rai, Thailand) painting there♥️. His artworks are stunning, and I’m surprised he isn’t globally recognized. Truly remarkable work. I captured him in my photos and videos. I didn’t like that I wasn’t allowed to take photos or record videos in Haw Kham No.1, and there was a rather arrogant guide who kept instructing what was allowed and what wasn’t.
Viera F — Google review
Park like grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Plenty of area to wander about for several hours. Lots of shade to keep cool. The main building is a work of art itself but there is a museum and art gallery also. Toilets clean, staff very helpful and had knowledge of the history behind the pieces we were looking at. There is a gift shop which also sells cold drinks. Plenty of parking on-site. The only trouble we had was finding the correct entrance. We drove to 2 locked gates and eventually found our way in. Well worth a visit.

Wat Huay Pla Kang is a temple complex located 6 km northwest of Chiang Rai city. It features a 9-floor pagoda with 12 surrounding structures and a giant statue of the bodhisattva Guan Yin, also known as the Goddess of Mercy. Despite being called 'Big Buddha,' it's not actually a Buddha statue. Visitors can climb to the highest level of the pagoda for stunning views over Chiang Rai by either using stairs or paying for an elevator ride.
Beautiful temples to visit,I really appreciated the experience on the statue in particular. With 10 baht you can use the lift and go in the head of the statue where you got a great views of the temple and the surrounding area. The internal of the statue is really well decorated aswell. Another good experience!

We visited this temple with red roofs and the 90m tall Guan Yin statue. The buggy ride up to the big statue is free but there is a donation box. Alternatively, there are stairs to walk up which are flanked by intricate white dragon sculptures. They also have a drinks stall that charges only THB 20 for an iced drink like coffee, chocolate and more. This is a good temple to visit in Chiang Rai.

Wat Huay Pla Kang, often called the "Big Buddha of Chiang Rai," is a striking temple complex located about 6-8 km northwest of Chiang Rai city, Thailand. Known for its unique blend of Chinese and Lanna architectural styles, it’s a relatively new temple, with construction starting in 2001 under the guidance of Phra Ajarn Phob Chok. It’s a serene spot, less crowded than other regional temples, offering stunning sunset views and a peaceful atmosphere.

It is advisable to visit early in the morning to avoid the heat.

We hadn’t planned to visit this temple, but on our way from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai, we spotted the magnificent Bodhisattva Guan Yin statue from the road and quickly searched for the route to get there. So glad we made the spontaneous stop! Wat Huay Pla Kang is located on top of a gentle slope, with plenty of easy parking available. We spent about 40 minutes exploring the grounds. It was a quiet and peaceful Wednesday morning, which made it perfect for taking photos of the stunning Guan Yin statue and the surrounding temple structures. A beautiful and serene place—definitely worth a visit if you're in the area or passing by!

The "White Temple," or Wat Rong Khun, in Chiang Rai should be on your list. It's not your typical temple, this place is a vibrant, contemporary art installation that happens to be a Buddhist temple. The first thing that strikes you is its dazzling white color, reflecting the sunlight from thousands of tiny glass pieces embedded in the plaster. It looks like something like taj mahal, incredibly intricate and almost otherworldly. As you approach, you cross a bridge over a pit of reaching hands a powerful, slightly unsettling symbol of human suffering and temptation. Inside, prepare for a surprise. The murals blend traditional Buddhist imagery with unexpected pop culture icons, creating a truly unique commentary on modern society. Even the restrooms are a work of art, housed in a separate, equally elaborate golden building. It's a place that sparks conversation and challenges perceptions, making it an unforgettable experience unlike any other temple in Thailand. Go and see the entire temple.

The Hilltribe Museum and Education Centre in Chiang Rai is a cultural center dedicated to the six hill tribes of Northern Thailand: Akha, Hmong, Karen, Lahu, Lisu, and Yao. It offers an insightful look into the history and heritage of the region's Lanna culture through its extensive collection of artifacts such as traditional costumes, tools, carvings, and cooking utensils.
Very useful information about where the tribes originated from and a bit about how they live now. Not everyone’s cup of tea but I like learning about other cultures. I watched a short film in an air conditioned room which gave a brief yet detailed description about each of the 6 main tribes. A few days later, I visited the site where the hill tribes live now which although interesting, I wasn’t totally convinced of its authenticity. However, I purchased some gifts from each of the tribespeople as it all went to help school the children I believe.

This little museum was great. Price is 50 THB per person and it includes a free herbal tea. The tour starts with an interesting documentary about all the minority villages in Thailand, their history and traditions. After the movie you can visit the small museum and buy souveniers.

It's a good place to learn about all the tribes of the mountain. However the content is quite boring, just informative.
Tony C — Google review
Been there before and came back in a hope that, with years, the exhibition became more modern, bright and informative. Regretfully, that did not happen. Yes, it's a charity project, but that does nit mean it has to be in such a 1970s' style... In my opinion, there could be way more information, descriptions and original exhibits.
V K — Google review
Probably give you insight of the different hill tribe in Thailand. Know the do and don't before you wanted to visit the tribe village and want you will be expecting. The pda inside the museum also offer customise tour which can range from half day to 4 days 3 nights trekking or educational. They are non profit organisation that put the money they earned into good use for the tribe.
Siew L — Google review
The museum got old. It feels like they set it up 20-30 years ago and left it untouched since then. Additionally the airflow is so bad within that building that you get tired quickly because of lack of oxygen inside. However, they had a video presentation available in different languages - nice! So we learned a lot of numbers about the different tribes (easy to forget). The 50₿ are not too expensive for what's offered. It is ok to get an overview about the tribes and might help you to decide wether you want to visit a tribe and if - which one to visit.

Wat Phra Kaew Chiang Rai, a 14th-century temple located in Mueang Chiang Rai district, is home to the revered Emerald Buddha, discovered on the temple grounds in 1434. Originally known as Wat Pa Ya or Wat Pa Yia, it was renamed in 1977 after the discovery of the Emerald Buddha image. The temple features a multi-faced ubosot built in 2433 and has undergone restoration over time.

Our visit to Wat Phra Kaew in Chiang Rai was a highlight of our trip, offering a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and stunning architecture! Located in the heart of the city near the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar, this temple is easily accessible yet feels like a serene retreat from the bustling streets. Known as the original home of the Emerald Buddha (now in Bangkok), Wat Phra Kaew holds immense cultural significance, and its peaceful ambiance made our visit unforgettable. The temple complex is beautifully maintained, with lush gardens, intricate statues, and vibrant Lanna-style buildings adorned with red and gold details. The main hall houses a replica of the Emerald Buddha, crafted with exquisite detail, and the surrounding murals depicting Buddhist tales are mesmerizing. We were particularly drawn to the Phra Yok Museum on-site, which displays rare Lanna artifacts, including jade Buddha images and ancient scriptures. a true gem in Chiang Rai that we’d highly recommend to anyone exploring the city!

Wat Phra Kaew in Chiang Rai (also known as the Emerald Buddha Temple) is a peaceful, more traditional spot that feels very different from the flashy White and Blue Temples. It’s not touristy at all, which actually makes it a really nice break — quiet, calm, and very well maintained. There is a school for monks and locals come pray here. The temple is famous because the original Emerald Buddha (now in Bangkok’s Grand Palace) was discovered here centuries ago. The one you see now is a beautiful green jade replica, still very impressive and treated with a lot of respect. The whole complex has a very local, authentic vibe — more focused on spirituality than on Instagram posts. There’s no entrance fee. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), especially if you plan to enter the main hall. It’s less strict than the White Temple, but still a sacred place. They also have a small museum on the grounds with historical artifacts and info about the Emerald Buddha. We spent about 15 minutes - more if you take time to read the signs and enjoy the surroundings. It’s located close to the city center, so very easy to combine with the Blue Temple.
Alexander R — Google review
As any real temple, it's always good and peaceful but what tries to destroy it are some evil creatures around it. Such a holy place and some souls that have nothing else to do than gossiping and staring at others when looking on the mirror is so difficult. These men kept playing cards and talking about the farang and looking bad at me, especially the pink shirt one. Good examples to work in a temple!

Really nice temple.. plenty of green, air feels very fresh here. Also not many tourists, quite relaxing. Walk up the steps and you will see a magnificent scene, green marble? walls. Recommended , one of the nicest ones in the area

So peaceful and nice view at the sunset

Lovely little temple complex next to the City Pillar monument. The golden stupa is about 500 years old and is said to be built on the remains of an even older temple.
Karl M — Google review
The original Wat was apparently older than the city, however the current buildings are much younger. We found the Wat relatively unspectacular, however its location slightly outside todays city centre on a hill made it worth the trip. Next to it is a monument designating the old centre of town (2nd photo)

Providing a quiet escape, Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong is a temple worth visiting. Its humble appeal and serene environment offer a decent retreat from the everyday hustle.

This is another peaceful Buddha's relic near the city of Chiangrai.. there is also a city pillar in the hill compound.

Awesome small temple packed with history. King Mengrai came here and also there is a city pillar and some great views.

One of Chiang rai's temples. It is located kind of further from the city center and at the top of a hill, so it may take you a while if you walk up there. The place was quite, but unfortunately we did not enjoy much of the view because of the weather.

Chiang Rai River Beach, also known as the Little Pattaya of Chiang Rai, is a hidden gem located along the picturesque Kok River, just a short distance from Chiang Rai city. This 1,200-meter stretch of sandy riverbank offers a tranquil escape and is popular among locals for swimming and relaxation. Surrounded by bamboo huts, visitors can savor traditional Thai cuisine and cold drinks before or after taking a refreshing dip in the river.
I went to this place during flower festival which is really nice atmosphere and landscape. Recommended time is early morning or late noon.
OraWanderlust — Google review
The 2025/2568 Chiang Rai Flower Festival was moved here. About 6 km from the old location making transport an issue. The park is too big for the show diminishing the overall enjoyment. The old location was convenient and close to the city center.
Jim K — Google review
Visited during the flower show in January 2025, all I can say is wow, if you are ever in Chiang Rai you need to visit this place, there were processions, light shows, the trees and plants, food stalls and it’s free entry

We visited this place yesterday during the week. It was desolated but we liked it. Most restaurants are closed but a lady offered us food and we had a tasty lunch. The kids like to play with all the pillows and a cat, we enjoyed the scenery and local vibe. The river was to dangerous to swim in this time off year. Make sure you have a phone number from a taxi driver as they are not around. A friendly local drove us to the citycenter.

Free art gallery that features and sells the work of local artists. The gallery is not big but it's free and really nice. It also has a restaurant within the same facility, which we did not try. But the place seems packed and has a long queue.

Doy Din Dang Pottery เครื่องปั้นดินเผาดอยดินแดง is a pottery studio and gallery located on the outskirts of Chiang Rai, Thailand. The renowned Thai potter, Somluk Pantiboon, combines his international training with a local touch to create practical and decorative ceramics using natural glazes made from rice, bamboo, ash, and wood.
I loved this place. It was such a peaceful serene place remind me of hiking in the forest in Japan and come across structure that sells things. Also I came during the wettest part of monsoon season and the drizzle makes the place even more airy tale like. Not many places can claim their are being artsy and earthy at the same time and Doy Din Dang Pottery is exactly that. Their coffee shop was super cute. I loved the fact that they serve drinks and a place for the customers to enjoy and soaked in the environment we are in far from the hustle and bustle of the crowds. Since it was a very quiet day, I was fortunate to be able to spend sometime there for a production tour and met the owner whose works were displayed for his customer to enjoy. They do custom work for small batch and big batch productions for hospitality industry yet plenty of the work was one of a kind. Their pottery products range from small tea cup to human size vases. The service was phenomenal. They boxed my stuff with all the padding necessary and secured with industrial packing tape with handle. All ready to be checked in. It was so convenient.
C M — Google review
This was such a quiet and lovely place, love it! If you ask me how it looks like, I can say this was so artsy yet earthy. There are lots of pottery works displays, place beautifully. Therefore, you need to be careful with your stuff and step! There is also a coffee shop, sadly I didnt have the chance to tried their food and beverages. But its good knowing there’s a place who serves art and silence in the crowded surroundings. When I went there, there wasn’t much visitors so I was able to watch how the workers make the pottery.
Zelza A — Google review
I stumbled across this place in an article and decided to stop by. I had to take a grab because it’s a ways out from the main area. It was so worth it because I ended up buying five pieces that I can’t wait to showcase in my home. The lady who was working there also spoke English and was super friendly. The power was out when I visited and they gave me a flashlight to look at all of their things. When you first enter, you need to walk down a little path to get to the main shop - even if they look closed, make sure to look around because when I was visiting, the power was out, but they were still open.
Savannah — Google review
What a quaint studio/shop! I have not heard of Somluk Pantiboon before visiting, but now I understand he is a national-level ceramics artist. Beautiful, interesting pieces, albeit a little dusty. Glazes are from rice stalks, charcoal, etc. Prices are reasonable and they will bubble wrap your purchases for you.
YJ K — Google review
Visitors to Ban Doi Din Daeng can witness the entire process of ceramic creation, including shaping, carving, drying, and glazing. Beautiful ceramic pieces are displayed both indoors and outdoors. In addition to admiring the artistry, the tranquil setting offers a relaxing atmosphere. There’s a small café on-site where you can enjoy a cup of coffee served in handcrafted ceramic ware. Adjacent to the café is a shop selling a wide variety of exquisite handmade ceramics. As these ceramics are meticulously handcrafted, they may be pricier than factory-made pieces, but their quality and craftsmanship are assured
Jintana K — Google review
What an inspiring place, architecturally and the ceramics themselves, went home with both a book on the architecture and ceramic pieces. A must visit for creatives. The master potter has made his vision a reality ⭐️
Aarish N — Google review
A comprehensive venue for ceramics production. There're multiple buildings in the area dedicated for displaying the selling products, cafe, gallery, and pottery production. The place is being expanded to a land on another side of the road. There're also electrically rotating stations for visitors to try to work on shaping the clay. The owner of Doi Din Dang Poterry Somluck Pantiboon received a ceramics training from Japan, so the style leans towards Japanese style. Each pottery here is an art piece, and those in the discount shop are more plain and affordable. This is a school that provides trainings/internships to students with exhibitions and collaborations with a wider artistic community.
Missberry M — Google review
Many types of pottery on display. Only people who truly knows and values them will appreciate this.
