1Monte Grona

Mountain peak
Monte Grona, standing at 1736 meters, offers breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains. The trail to the summit begins from Bregalia near Menaggio and takes less than two hours to reach Rifugio Menaggio at 1400m on the southern slope. Hikers can extend the trip further up to Monte Bregagno at 2107m. Along the way, there are fountains and picnic areas amidst stunning landscapes.
A rocky trail with clear mark all the way, safe and slow grade will keep the trail good for the beginners. Stopby the Menaggio when coming down from the top and enjoy a cup of coffee is a perfect enjoyment.

I did the Monte Grona hike on my birthday with three of my friends, and it was honestly the best birthday present ever! The scenery along the trail was absolutely breathtaking — panoramic views of Lake Como, the surrounding mountains, and the charming villages below. The trail itself is of moderate difficulty — the elevation climbs quickly, but it’s so rewarding once you reach the top. Every step was worth it! If you’re visiting Lake Como and enjoy a good hike with incredible views, I highly recommend adding Monte Grona to your list.

Loved it here , amazing views all around
Dale F — Google review
Wonderful hike, beautiful views, easy to reach, it took us back and forth 4 hours from parcheggio Grona. Some parts you feel like climbing is so nice and worth it 😊
Marcela B — Google review
Breathtaking view. I recommend to stop at the Menaggio refuge which remains in an excellent position to admire the lake and the surrounding mountains. On the other hand, hikers with a fair amount of experience can follow the complete route that offers a more satisfying experience. The trails are in excellent condition, pay attention only in winter to the normal route which in the final stretch is to the north and will often be icy and dangerous considering that the mountain is very steep.

Beautiful peak and hike however difficult and challenging. Take good trekking shoes with you!

Monte Legnone, standing at 8,560 feet, is the highest peak in the Lake Como area and offers stunning panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. This classic climb is one of the most popular in the Orobic Alps and provides a sense of accomplishment along with breathtaking vistas. The hike through rugged terrain includes relatively steep slopes, rocky paths, and some sections where secured ropes are recommended.
2610 meters height and a beautiful panoramic view from the top, little difficult trekking but worth to do it.

beutiful scenery, but hard to climb
Edvardas P — Google review
Great hike. 4 hours up, 2 hours down. For experienced hikers - there's some sections near the top with ropes that definitely leaves your heart in your mouth with sheer drops either side. But very rewarding with breathtaking views of Lake como and the Italian and Swiss alps from the top. Went end of may and still a small amount of slushy snow at the top that was quite slippery so recommend poles. Snow made it even more beautiful though
Rory D — Google review
Beautiful hike! I did it in September. Can imagine it too be quite tiring for people not used to longer/more demanding hikes, however, or for those with lower levels of general fitness. For example, relatively steep slopes, many rocks, and a few parts higher up where it is recommended to use the already-secured ropes. I'm usually a bit scared of parts where you have to use ropes but I think this was very doable for me, so not to worry too much if you're like me! One thing worth mentioning: There is a parking area at the start of the hike but the drive up there could be potentially stressful for inexperienced drivers/those not used to driving in the mountains: narrow roads and many, many u-turns!
Danielle B — Google review
Beautiful mountain with a good trail and some fixed ropes at most precarious sections. The bad part is the drive: the road to the refuge is the most dreadful set of switchbacks.

Hiking Trails
The Sentiero Del Viandante, also known as The Wayfarers Way, is a 45 km historic walking path along the eastern coast of Lake Como. It stretches from Abbadia Lariana to Piantedo and was once the only connection between coastal villages in past centuries. This scenic trail offers beautiful views and surprises along the way. Travelers can enjoy a mix of challenging and gentle terrain while taking in panoramic vistas.
Wonderful walking to arrive in the waterfalls. Not very easy
Steve — Google review
This historic hiking trail that runs along the eastern shore of Lake Como stretches for about 45 km from Abbadia Lariana in the south to Colico in the north. It is typically divided into five stages, making it accessible for both day hikes and multi-day treks: 1. Abbadia Lariana to Lierna: This section is relatively easy, with well-marked paths and gentle ascents. It passes through the charming village of Mandello del Lario, known for its motorbike museum dedicated to Moto Guzzi. 2. Lierna to Varenna: This moderately challenging stage takes you through picturesque landscapes and small hamlets. Varenna is a highlight, with its romantic lakeside setting and attractions like Villa Monastero and Castello di Vezio. 3. Varenna to Dervio: This part of the trail offers more elevation changes and stunning views. Dervio, with its medieval tower and waterfront promenade, is a delightful stop. 4. Dervio to Bellano: This segment is moderately difficult, featuring steep ascents and descents. Bellano is famous for the Orrido di Bellano, a dramatic gorge with cascading waterfalls. 5. Bellano to Colico: The final stage is the most challenging, with rugged terrain and significant elevation gain. Colico, situated at the northern tip of Lake Como, offers a range of amenities and historical sites, including the Forte Montecchio Nord. The trail can be accessed from several points along its route, with train stations in Abbadia Lariana, Varenna, Dervio, and Colico providing convenient starting and ending points. It is well-marked with orange signs and painted waymarkers. However, carrying a detailed map or GPS is advisable, especially for less experienced hikers.
Y. T — Google review
The views are pretty good, but we spent almost 2 hours trying to find the trial and understand the arrows on the signs, and googling every reference we could find online. Once you find it and get going the right direction, it’s well marked, but man is it a struggle to get there. Some very sweet locals tried to help us but the language barrier was tricky. We finally found it, and it was nice, but not spectacular.

Ivan D — Google review
(Translated by Google) Given the almost 2 hour drive to reach Varenna, we opted for the third stage of this path, the most panoramic apparently and from the information found online it is "only" 12km and an average difference in altitude. This stretch is truly panoramic, the only thing is that we covered 19 km. Luckily we return by train!

Greenway del Lago di Como is a picturesque 10 km trail along the western shore of Lake Como, perfect for leisurely walks and family outings. The route starts in Colonno and ends in Griante, passing through charming villages like Sala Comacina and Ossuccio. Along the way, hikers can admire baroque churches, traditional Italian architecture, and beautiful lakeside gardens.
Great experience, the views are incredible and the towns are just brilliant, definitely worth it. I started the way around (from Tremezzo) and I was a little bit confused with the signs around the path and got lost, I imagine doing the right way is also better. Google maps doesn't have the entire trail here, worth doing some web searching through other pages that do have it. I also add a photo of the signs all around the path that will guide you. Don't expect a sign per meter, they are really a few but just to remind you you are on the right path, they are fine. During the trekking you will find places to bathe in the lake, really really important if it is summer. If you give up at any part of the trip, try to find a bus or a ferry near where you are. For example there is a bus working all weekend that leaves you in Como city.
Carolina B — Google review
Nice walking trail which includes parts to see above or right next to the lake. Beautiful view, historical buildings, drinking water possiblies, restaurants, swimming possibilities are included.
L4C! — Google review
This is a great hike on mostly paved walkways BUT my husband and I are fit, completed this entire walk in 2ish hours. It definitely has hills with some more strenuous parts. Plenty of viewpoints for rest though! If you want to make this more of a stroll, it will take 3-4 hours. You can begin at different points if you do not want to do all 7ish miles! Be warned haha
Integrate I — Google review
Great Hike !! Day 1 we started in Lenno after getting off the Ferry. Stepped onto the Greenway Trail, followed the signs heading North and hiked to Griante or the end of the trail. You can go further and sidewalk tour the Old Villas towards Menaggio but roadwork prevents you from getting through to Menaggio. Day 2 was a longer day, hiking to the start of the trail from the Lenno Ferry and back. This part of the trail is better marked, but a bit more challenging as you climb higher into the villages and enjoy Grand Vistas. A tasty Panini and Gelato is well deserved on the return leg. Va Bene
P. ( — Google review
The perfect stroll for the day when you forget your hiking shoes for more serious trail :) Amazing views especially when the path climbs up away from the lake, Griante to Colonno with pizza/beer lunch break takes easy 5 hours
ThePolishTraveller — Google review
Beautiful place, and the walk. You can really enjoy places, views and the atmosphere. Path is quite easy, but I think without a children’s trolley.
Maciej C — Google review
Day one we started in Cadenabbia and walked to Lenno, returning to Cadenabbia. Day two we took the ferry to Lenno and walked to Colonno before returning. The way is well-marked with metal medallions in the path or signs at turns. We enjoyed seeing staid mansions, bustling commercial corners, statuesque churches, quaint villages and lively playgrounds- with the grand Lake Como in the background. Walking proved to be a great way to see the range of how people occupy this gorgeous part of Italy. Near Colono the trail medallions are more scarce.

Mountain peak
Corni di Canzo offers a perfect weekend morning plan for hikers looking for a good workout and a bit of climbing. The highlight of the journey is the close-up view of Grigna, an Ultra prominent mountain in Lombardy. The path from Canzo is quite tiring and becomes very impervious towards the end, but there's also an alternative via ferrata recommended only for expert hikers in excellent shape.
(Translated by Google) A really nice intermediate level trekking route that gives you great satisfaction. First off, unfortunately, on a negative note: we parked at the Gajum fountain but, as the owners of the hotel told us, a few months ago it became a restricted traffic zone so it is no longer possible to access unless you request a pass online. It is still possible to park in the town even if the route takes more than half an hour. Starting from the Gajum spring you can follow various paths to get to the top of the SEV refuge. To go up we took route no. 5 which lasts about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Once we arrive at the SEV it is possible to lie down on the lawn or have lunch at the refuge. From here it is also possible to continue the route up to the Central Horn or the Western Horn (both have a wall which requires climbing so it is best to do so with a bit of experience). On the way back we took path no. 1 and then the geological path which takes us back exactly to the starting point. Bellissima esperienza 🧗🏼🙂

(Translated by Google) The "Lo spirito del bosco" trail from Canzo to the Terz'Alpe Refuge in the direction of Corni di Canzo is a pleasant route. From the Canzo train station, you enter the town and reach, via the asphalt road, the Sorgente Gajum Hotel and Restaurant, the starting point of the trail. Before entering the beautiful forest, you walk along a cobbled path often exposed to the sun, from which you reach the Prim'Alpe Refuge. In a couple of hours, from the Sorgente Gajum, you reach Terz'Alpe, the Refuge offers a refreshment point (very popular especially on weekends) or you can eat a packed lunch on the lawn with shaded spots or, alternatively, lie down in the sun to get a tan. Finally, we returned to the Canzo train station along the other path that runs parallel to the Ravella stream and takes us back to the Gajum Springs. A good solution is to reach Canzo with the Trenord line, in Canzo there are not many parking lots, but they are mostly free. Gita consigliata

From Terz'alpe you can continue on the path of the giants up to the Colma (even here a quiet section) and then you start to climb a little more laboriously up to the forcella dei corni; alternatively from Terz'alpe follow path 1 which arrives under the western horn, a very steep and tiring stretch. If you don't suffer from vertigo you can then do a short "climbing" stretch and climb to the summit of the western horn, I did it without any particular equipment, but with great care (no children). 5 minutes below there is the SEV refuge for refreshment and large meadows for resting in the sun! Monte Bisbino, located near Como, offers a variety of activities such as hiking and biking through its wooded trails. Visitors can drive to a parking area below the summit or start their hike from the Rovenna church. The uphill route provides panoramic views of Lake Como and the surrounding area, with interesting points along the way. At the summit, there is a sanctuary dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and historical fortifications.
A mountain located above Cernobbio. Easy to find and access, a comfortable place for hiking and outdoor fun. There are also several places for lunch.

There are many sculptures made from timbers. You should not miss the chance to cross to switzerland to complete the hiking circle, or take your kids here to enjoy an adventure of cute wood figures along the way. The hiking trail is not so hard and you can learn Italian idioms here, writen on some woods lying on the ground.

(Translated by Google) Monte Legnoncino is a beautiful walk suitable for everyone, even with children. It starts from the Roccoli Lorla refuge where there is a parking lot with a good availability of parking spaces. The most difficult aspect of the walk, in reality, is the climb by car. The road is in fact quite narrow and a little winding, but all asphalted. It is not particularly demanding, but requires a little attention and mutual respect when you meet other cars. The walk along the military road is immersed in a welcoming forest where you do not feel the heat and the climb is really gentle without any sudden changes. The itinerary is not very long, but there are several points where you can observe the panorama, take a few minutes to see the post dating back to the First World War, and just above the Church of San Sfiro, linked to the legend of seven Larian hermits. Once you reach the top, you can enjoy a wonderful panorama.

Nestled between the stunning landscapes of Lake Como and Lake Lugano, Villa Fogazzaro Roi stands as a magnificent testament to 19th-century aristocratic life. This beautifully preserved mansion is not just a feast for the eyes with its exquisite paintings and furnishings; it also offers visitors a glimpse into the historical charm of the era. Surrounded by lush gardens, this villa was once home to writer Antonio Fogazzaro, who found inspiration here for his renowned novel 'Piccolo mondo antico.'
We went there on the special day of FAI which was supposed to be free of charge, but they asked us to donate at least 5€ per person and at the end didnt show us the whole building floors. The building was Beautiful and located on a mesmerizing place.

A visit to the ancien holiday maison of an Italian influential writer, which was lately used by his grandson Marquis Roi - a great collector of cigars, board games, books,….a lover of symmetric decoration,….gives us an insight of of the intellectual and bourgeois class of the 19th and 20th century. That inspires me a lot. The visit was accompanied by a friendly guide just a little regrets of not having enough time to wandering and looking more in detail the books, the furnitures the decorations there.

Even if you know nothing about the author whose villa this originally was, the place is quite beautiful AND the last owner’s insistence that place be kept just as he left it, with all of his possessions in place, means that it is an incredible window into the world of a certain class of people in the latter half of the 19th c. The villa is beautifully kept and the volunteer docents are amazing.... by all means combine a visit here with lunch at the incredible Osteria De Cin in Claino across the lake. Not to be missed!

Very attractive multilevel house with exquisite 19th century upper middle class furnishing and decor. Superb views out across the lake. Guided tours only, with some English translation if necessary. Some road parking on the road up to Castello but in good weather it may be better to park in Albogasio where there is more parking and a pleasant cafe for refreshments, and walk 10 mins along the "old" main road now bypassed by the tunnel. Easier to find than it might appear on a map! Guided tours are necessarily small due to room sizes so you may have an extended wait. Admission a little steep at €17 but free to UK National Trust members. No catering on site, or in the immediate area. Lots of lovely places to sit and wait and shelter available in the adjacent church.

About a 40 minute walk from the Como Camerlata train station. Which is One stop from the Como main station. The weather was not great when we did the walk with thick clouds and rain. Otherwise the views would have great. Most of the walk was steep, but thankfully very little traffic. The castle has been reduced to its keep. The keep can be accessed for 10 Euro per adult. There are four levels excluding the roof level. Each level had some artefacts on this history of the castle from Roman to medieval times. Our guide was knowledgeable and very happy to answer our questions. The roof would normally have fantastic views to Milan. Well worth the walk and visit.

So glad we visited here. Most special church we ever visited. A symbolic and spiritual place for cyclist. In 1949, Pope Pius XII declared Madonna del Ghisallo the patroness of cyclists. Cyclists from around the world make pilgrimages to the chapel to seek protection and blessings. The steep climb to the chapel is a popular challenge among cycling enthusiasts. The chapel houses an extensive collection of cycling memorabilia, including bikes, jerseys, and photos donated by professional cyclists. Some notable items include the bikes of cycling legends such as Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali. Monte San Primo is a stunning mountain located near Lake Como, just a short drive from Bellagio, Italy. It offers breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding area. Hiking to the summit takes about 4-6 hours and provides dramatic panoramic vistas of Lake Como. The trail can be challenging, especially on the steep side with muddy and icy sections, making it potentially dangerous in certain seasons.
Absolutely amazing views during the hike and particularly at the top. We decided to take the difficult and steep approach first, which is difficult due to being steep, slippy and cold at this time of year, especially if you don’t have the correct shoes and clothing. It took us three hours to complete the circular route and was well worth it in the end. Be prepared though if you want to take the difficult route.

Sormano Astronomical Observatory has been welcoming amateur astronomers since 1989, leading to the discovery of minor planets and comets. Situated atop a hill over 1000 meters above sea level, it offers stunning views and is open for night-time visits. The observatory provides an incredible vantage point for stargazing and enjoying the breathtaking landscape. It's recommended to check the schedule before visiting as it's typically open only one Sunday per month.
It's great, the view is stunning, a great place for unforgettable memories.
Stoyan F — Google review
Most of the reviews for this place are for La Colma di Sormano and should be separated to it's own place, IMO. This place, the Astronomical Observatory of Sormano is a very small building at the top of the hill. You should call ahead or check the schedule as I believe it's only open one Sunday per month. The view must be very good from this vantage point 1000+ meters above sea level. We are looking forward to the mid August (11th-13th) shooting stars event, the Perseids, from this location it should be spectacular even if the moon will be waning gibbous.
Christopher M — Google review
Place frequented by cyclists and motorcyclists, it is best not to go on Sunday. In addition to the observatory is the culmination of the famous "Wall of Sormano" uphill known among cycling enthusiasts for its difficulty. From here they also leave easy trails to the south at Mount Palanzone to the north at Mount San Primo.

(Translated by Google) The sanctuary of S. Miro al Monte was built between 1643 and 1660 along the Val Ravella (click here to learn more) by the people of Canze, in honor of their fellow citizen saint, San Miro Paredi (Canzo, 1306 - Sorico, 1381). Tradition has it that the place where this modest but interesting sanctuary stands today was the hermitage of S. Miro, who lived there in solitude, penance and prayer throughout his life. The small building (with an adjoining convent which is currently uninhabited) stands in a raised position with respect to the stream that flows right below (Ravella torrent), surrounded by steep rocky slopes. To reach it you can drive to the Gajum springs (485 m); leaving the car, take the "Giorgio Achermann" geological path (easy to follow and only slightly uphill at the end) which always flows along the Ravella stream until reaching the sanctuary, near which there are also some small fountains from which it flows particularly good and fresh water. A beautiful and simple walk from the Gajum sources and you reach this isolated and simple sanctuary and right behind the foot of the stream there is a cavity in the rock where the Saint took refuge🏰👍🙏😀. Thank God 🙏. Grazie a Dio 🙏.

It's also very beautiful inside. From here, the trail continues and climbs towards the Cornizzolo. I reached it by mountain bike, and from here, there's no other way back. The riverside trail becomes a geological trail and is off-limits to bikes, while the trail to the Cornizzolo is a trek to be done only on foot.

Located at an altitude of 606 m. above sea level the hermitage stands out against the backdrop of the mountains and next to a stream that produces fresh water for visitors. After about 40 minutes of non-challenging climb which is also suitable for children, some even climb by bicycle, you arrive at the sanctuary. The directions at the car park are clear and exhaustive and the route is easy and intuitive. Other paths then branch off along the road and connect to many sites in the area. It is said that S. Miro was a pilgrim who sought shelter in the Prima Alpe area. He was hosted in the stables and was told that at night, even with a full moon and a clear sky, you could see lightning and hear thunder due to the demons throwing boulders onto the valley (the erratic boulders). That night exactly what was said happened and S. Miro began to curse the demons. The next morning the inhabitants were able to observe the valley shaken by enormous promontories (the horns of Canzo), which they interpreted as devils fallen to the earth and transformed into rock. This story is very evocative, isn't it? Quella notte accadde proprio quanto detto e S. Miro cominciò a maledire i demoni.

A great and wonderfull Golf Course, bit up and down but not so bad, we were impressed of the multiple very small stone houses. Course in good conditions, Teeboxes would be happy about more support, greens and Fairways in good conditions, very great is the view to the mountains and the whole landscape. We got a very warm welcome and were great suported. Clubhouse is very great with an awsome view. We enjoyed a great lunch in the garden, we're very pleased for a great day on a beautifull Golf course.

This is a very memorable golf course with stunning elevation changes. I walked it 4 times during my week in Menaggio and appreciated it more each day. While there are some conditioning issues, the design more than makes up for them. There's great history here dating back to 1907 with many small stone buildings interwoven throughout the property.

La Crocetta offers stunning views of Menaggio, Varenna, and Bellagio. The starting point for the hike is marked with red and white signs, but it's recommended to use Google Maps as locals might direct you to the main road instead. The moderate hike can be a bit secluded and eerie at times, but the breathtaking view of Menaggio from below makes it worth it.
Stunning views of Menaggio, Varenna and Bellagio Lots of different reviews read and we still got lost 🤣 1. Use google maps to get to La Crocetta starting part of the hike. 2 images below show the signs in red/white. This is the starting point. Do not ask locals who might point you in the direction of hiking the main road to Croce. Do not do that. 2. Follow path and look out for the red marks. There are also some with red/white which I believe to be more for wider hiking in area and not specific to La Crocetta. 3. When you go up the path, you find the two signs with long and short route - take long as this was the correct one. Continue looking out for red marks. 4. you are in a forest path with rocks, stones etc. Not for hiking in or just after heavy rain. It is quite steep and high at times. Good shoes & water needed. The path was empty as was the actual summit bit. Highly recommend for off beaten track activity.

Incredibly beautiful, I hiked up from town using AllTrails app and was the only one on the trail. It had rained the night before and visibility was not good dt the fog, but the fog lifted as I came to the cross and was able to take some pictures w neat fog backdrop. A really calm and relaxing way to see Lake Como from above.

The views are amazing! I was surprised that not many people seem to know about this viewpoint. The hike is moderate, I went with my 64 year old mother who struggled at times and I would recommend going with a friend as the dirt track feels pretty secluded and horror movie-esque but once there you will marvel at the view of Menaggio from below
