Pub
The Golden Rule is a beloved pub in Ambleside, known for its traditional atmosphere and excellent selection of ales. Situated on Smithy Brow, it offers a welcoming environment with wooden beams and classic decor. While it doesn't serve food, the pub makes up for it with a wide range of cask beers, draught lagers, ciders, wines, whiskies, gins, and other spirits. It's also dog-friendly and features a charming beer garden.
Fantastic traditional pub with fine selection of well kept ales, lagers & ciders. Bar snacks only which makes this venue perfect for a quiet drink after a day on the fells. Wish there were more places like this to escape to 😉
Peter M — Google review
A great traditional pub nestled in scenic Ambleside. The exterior is colourfully decorated with real flowers, and the interior is covered wall to wall with pieces of intrigue including all sorts of photos, drawings, and maps of the local area (some of which are inset into the tables). The building itself is hundreds of years old and retains a lot of the strange features old buildings often have. An open plan bar contrasts the small single table hideaway just a few metres away. Small steps leading to rooms with only a few tables, wrought iron furniture, and seats set into bay windows really show how untouched by modern standards this place is. A shelf of board games and a TV with some live sports provides entertainment on demand. I'm a huge fan of the Golden Rule and often find myself returning when visiting the Lakes. The toilet facilities are also clean with a disabled toilet available and baby changing only in the ladies. The beer is exclusively Robinson's, but a wide selection of it. Unfortunately you still can't escape the Cumbrian obsession with sparklers on the pumps here, so pints are usually a tad short (there has been no issue with topping pints up if requested). The beer has always been good quality and well kept when I've had it, although I have heard others disagree at times. The staff are very friendly and a touch banterous, greatly appreciated by the tourists and locals alike. Bar snacks are available including the slightly more substantial pork pies for weary hikers. A small outside seating area compliments the generous interior. Overall my number one choice for a pub in Ambleside. The beer is good and you can find yourself getting lost in the maze of small rooms and the history that goes along with it.
Arthur D — Google review
Great little pub. We only had a drink but now I know it’s here will definitely be back to try the food.
Steven N — Google review
Pretty sure they don't do much more than pork pies, crisps and nuts but we didn't try. Having said that the beer, service and atmosphere are excellent.
Howard Y — Google review
Fantastic drinking pub, great selection of ales, really well kept.
John W — Google review
Usually a place we visit in winter, the pub has a lovely outside space for thoss wishing to enjoy a pint. The space is clean and well managed, with ample seating and is dog friendly.
Caroline Y — Google review
It would be no easy task to persuade me that this is not the best pub in Ambleside. The selection of local real ales is both wide and worthy, and the establishment possesses all the aesthetic charms of an English pub that a travelling American might most ardently desire. The pork pie was one of the best I’ve tasted.
B A — Google review
Great, old school pub. If you like real ales, it's a must. Doesn't do food menu, but do offer scotch eggs or pork pie to go with your pint.

The Dog & Gun is a beloved traditional venue in Keswick, known for its dog-friendly atmosphere and fantastic menu. The pub offers a mix of contemporary and classic dishes, along with a selection of cask ales. The cozy setting features timber beams and a welcoming fireplace, creating an inviting ambiance for locals and holidaymakers alike. Visitors can savor the famous Hungarian goulash, as well as other popular dishes like beef & ale pie, fish and chips, and chicken with woodland mushroom pie.
If you ever find yourself in Keswick and you are looking for a fantastic place for food and drink? Then the Dog and Gun is the place to visit. They have a vast selection of real ales and lagers, they are also renowned for their famous goulash. Which I can confirm is the tastiest thing I’ve eaten in a long time 😋 the staff are friendly and dogs are welcome. Ru served us whilst we were here and she made us feel very welcome and relaxed. We shall definitely be returning to the Dog and Gun when we visit Keswick again. 😊

Been to Keswick many times never thought to come to this pub till Wednesday night. Very warm welcome from waitress, she was so lovely finding us a seat and recommending the Goulash. Demonstrating size of dishes. Really lovely lady. Goulash was fabulous. Pub so friendly and cosy. Great place will never avoid again!!!!
Christine H — Google review
Lovely place with a healthy range of vegetarian options. Very atmospheric and delicious food. The veggie goulash was very good.
Jo A — Google review
Nice pub, family and dog friendly. Big portions, a big goulash which I couldn’t finish and a cider cost me 20£. Goulash was tasty, rich flavor, but very filling.
Eliza A — Google review
Wow what a find, there are obviously several pubs in the town, but this caught our eye. Great welcome as soon as we walked in with the dogs. Service at the bar was quick and friendly. Food was tasty and came in good time and Ru was great we had a good chat and she loved the dogs..
Paul G — Google review
Not much to fault here! The prices were extremely reasonable and wait times for food were pretty short. The food itself was also delicious! (Not many peas in my mushy peas) but for the price of this it was brilliant! The only thing you must beware of is just how busy it gets! Particularly around 5.30-6 you can be waiting a long time to get a table and end up quite cramped in even when you find one.
Ben G — Google review
Lovely pub in the centre of Keswick, with traditional style beams and warm welcoming atmosphere. Within minutes of our arrival at 12 noon, the pub filled up, always a good sign. Staff were cheerful, friendly and helpful. Both the bar and food service were efficient. Food was very good, nicely presented and tasted lovely. Good selection of dishes are available from the menu. This pub has a greet selection of local real ales and beers. Dogs are very welcome in this pub, water bowls and treats are available for them. The interior was very cosy and looked nice having just been decorated for the festive season. Everything was immaculate and tidy.
Paul W — Google review
Came here this evening for their signature goulash and wasn’t disappointed . Got the standard size portion and very tasty snd filling. Washed down with a couple of beers. Large selection of craft and tap beers. Dog friendly and excellent service. Well worth a visit whilst in keswick. Total cost for meal and beers was reasonable.

The Masons Arms is a charming pub located on Cartmell Fell, offering stunning views of Winster and Lyth Valleys. The rustic ambiance with ancient beams and old fireplaces creates a dreamy atmosphere for both locals and tourists. The award-winning pub serves excellent food featuring local treats like Lakeland damson and pork sausage, local game, and Cartmel lamb shank.
Lovely warm welcome and really attentive and pleasant service. Food was lovely but the twice fried chips were probably the best I've ever had. The rib eye steak was very thin and I didn't think they'd possibly have been able to cook it rare but they did! Very impressed. Lovely little village pub that's well worth visiting!
Ruth D — Google review
What a fantastic culinary experience! And great food too! Andy’s eat your way round the world meals are always not to be missed. However last night , the meal from Japan was worthy of any high end restaurant but at a price which was excellent value. How lucky are we to have such great food in our tiny village! Superb Andy! And the beer is very good too, Hal! Thank you! And a quick mention for the lovely waiting staff as they were informative and very sociable!

Popped in for food on our final day staying close to Gilcrux. Absolutely fabulous pub. Made to feel at home as soon as we walked in. Lovely warm cosy atmosphere and very dog friendly. Food was excellent and the choice of zero or low alcohol drinks was one of the best I've seen in a pub. If your in the area definitely call in.
Phil C — Google review
We ate here tonight - 3 adults, 2 children and honestly just had the nicest time! The food is absolutely brilliant, highly recommend the sea bass and the kids meals were great too- chicken strips were a hit. The pub is lovely just for a drink too if they are not serving food. We’ll definitely be back!

Lovely wee local pub, super friendly & very accommodating. Great gluten free options too. Make sure to book if you fancy a Sunday lunch (which is absolutely delicious) a wee shout out to the waitress she was really helpful and a pleasant soul.

Pub
Hole in t' Wall is a charming and historic pub located in Bowness, proudly claiming the title of the oldest pub in the area with origins dating back to 1612. The interior exudes an old-world charm with its stone-flagged floors, oak panelling, low beams, and an eclectic array of bric-a-brac adorning every nook. The bar offers a selection of Robinsons ales, gins, and rums.
Quite, away from the main road place. Lovely beer garden. Delicious food. Portions are generous. The prices are lower compared to other places in the area, but the quality is definitely not worse (and probably better). Lovely and very helpful stuff. We weren’t sure what to drink, so they let us try a couple of different beers and ciders to help us decide. Definitely would come again.
Ognjen J — Google review
If your hungry try the ploughman's, or it can be shared, and the fish pie looked very tasty. The pudding was sticky toffee pud and custard was nice and light and hot. All washed down with a couple of pints. A very enjoyable evening. 🤗 Thanks
Graeme H — Google review
A cosy and historic pub with loads of character! It was built in 1612. The oldest pub in the Lake District. The Hole in t’Wall is full of charm, with its low beams, open fire, and friendly atmosphere. The food is hearty and delicious, and the drinks selection is excellent. Staff are welcoming and attentive, making you feel right at home. A perfect place to relax after exploring Windermere – it truly feels like a hidden gem.

Staff were gorgeous with my toddler, we had the best fish pie I’ve ever had and Lamb Henry too. Would go here every day of holiday if we could, we’re considering it!

Always visit when we are in Bowness. Quirky old style pub. Can vouch for the steak and ale pie. Great juke box in back room.. Quiet in front room.. Good selection of beers. Friendly staff, great live music on Friday nights.

Visiting the Lakes this weekend , got in quite late so went here for a quick pint or two. Really nice place, decent beer (mostly Robinson's, I guess they own it?). Quiet on a Thursday, so ideal for a reading a book before bed.

Amazing food , great taste and very generous portions. Plenty of choices for ales and a 400 + year old pub

A very enjoyable experience had, the staff are very friendly and helpful. A good selection of draught beer available to indulge in. The food ordered arrived quickly and was of a lovely quality (fish finger buttie and ploughman’s ) they both were very generous portions for a good price.

The Drunken Duck Inn & Restaurant is a contemporary-country inn located in the heart of bustling Ambleside. The pub has hearty food, good ale, great views, and a friendly atmosphere. It focuses on strong customer relationships and high-end dishes – making it one of the best places to eat in the Lake District. It's ideally situated close to popular attractions like Coniston Water and Hawkshead, as well as one of the best locations in the Lake District.
We stopped here for a coffee break and absolutely loved the experience. The location offers a wonderful countryside vibe with a very peaceful setting. The cappuccinos were delicious, and we were able to enjoy them while looking out at sheep grazing in a nearby meadow. It was a perfect, relaxing backdrop. As a bonus, they were very welcoming to our dog and even provided a water bowl for her.
Mitch H — Google review
The food was exceptional and the pub setting is gorgeous. When we visited last night however we found the dining room waiting staff to be a cold and not very engaging. I can't help but think the bar and kitchen staff's efforts were let down by the front of house staff.
Cat F — Google review
Rather disappointed on this one. We went out of our way to visit along the dark country roads but were met with something we probably shouldn't have bothered with. Price wise the food did not match how much the bill came to. Similarly with the atmosphere & the wine. We dined in the evening and we were surprised to find a somewhat stone cold & quiet dining room, ie. no background music whatsoever and low level lighting. This made for an odd feeling date night when sat so close to other patrons. There was no atmosphere at all which was sad for such a cosy looking place. Food wise the highlight was the scotch egg starter with pickled cucumber, a tasty snack but also nothing majorly exciting about it. I had the duck and my partner had the venison for our mains, presentation was lacking compared to images put forth on website. I asked for a recommendation of a fruity red wine to which the server simply replied that they didn't really have one. No suggestion or offer of anything else, it was left for the couple next to us to say that we might like a particular wine, unfortunately I did not enjoy it. My partner did enjoy the oat stout on offer. Desserts were a let down, no taste of the oat ice cream or whisky chocolate tart, just something you'd happen to find in any old establishment. Petit fours again were nothing special... a dry cookie on a piece of wood. No decaff coffee so had to settle again for a drink I didn't particularly want. In terms of service it was overall fine but I felt our waitress could have been a bit happier or sunnier. It felt like a disinterest to be serving us. £7 side of chips that arrived white and undercooked was the biggest surprise, along with a bill of £158 for something that was just not worth it. I fear the drunken duck is trading on its michelin guide mention with no real substance or joy. I've had better meals for half the price with a much more varied menu offering. Overall we wouldn't return and felt it was a disappointing evening.
C S — Google review
Great place to go for a drink on a sunny afternoon. The benches across from the pub have a spectacular view across the fields towards Ambleside, and you have the chance to meet acquaintance with a few goats. There’s a great local (possibly unique) selection on tap, and I ordered some chips too - not cheap but they were cooked perfectly. The bar area inside looks cosy and is separated from the restaurant.
Marques — Google review
Sharing dinner experience only as we visited the restaurant for a meal. The duck breast is superb and the hosts are super friendly. A worthy visit for visitor to the area though be aware of which road you are taking to this destination, use the “main” road to and from Ambleside as the alternative is a tight single lane (two ways) country road which is challenging for city dwellers like myself.
Alex — Google review
Stunning location with epic views down the valley towards Ambleside. Have stayed here twice now, back in 2014 and just recently and both times didn’t disappoint. Food is delicious and well presented. Some of the beers are brewed on site. Rooms are quaint with high end bathrooms. Couldn’t recommend this place highly enough.
Tom T — Google review
Popped in for a quick bite of lunch. On the bar menu there was soup and a choice of two sandwiches. Decided to try the penelle sandwich, as I'd never had penelle before. Penelle is a chickpea fritter. So I had a chick pea fritter, with some rocket, between two slices of bread and a portion of chips. Very bland, very carb heavy. I left feeling extremely bloated and rued my choice of sandwich! Lovely place, nice staff, great atmosphere and wonderful views. Didn't enjoy the lunch. IMHO, give the penelle sandwich a wide berth! 😁
Gavin W — Google review
A very cute little pub with stunning back drop in the heart of the lakes. We had the Sunday lunch which was nice but the venison wellington was a bit under cooked, a bit soggy and IMO doesn’t belong on a roast dinner. The staff are great and super friendly/dog friendly. They also have a nice beer/wine selection. Desserts looked very pretty but were unfortunately pretty average.

Nestled in the charming village of Allithwaite, The Pheasant Inn is a delightful family-run establishment that has been serving up comfort food since 2005. This traditional free house prides itself on offering locally sourced dishes, including a rotating selection of vegan options that are highly praised by locals and visitors alike. With its beautifully landscaped garden featuring topiary and a serene stream, it’s an ideal spot to unwind with a drink or enjoy al fresco dining.
My wife and I went to The Pheasant Inn for an evening meal whilst staying in the village. The food was excellent as was the service. It was great to see a country pub with character and great staff with a sense of humour. We then stayed for drinks after our meal in the bar to soak up the atmosphere. Absolutely brilliant evening. I would say if you plan on going to book a table as it gets very busy

Review 14/06/2025 Atmosphere: Busy in all areas, great to see. Staff : All pleasant and efficient taking orders. Drinks arrived quickly. Food : Fish and triple cooked chips. Black garlic Brisket beef burger. Fish and chips: Smaller portion size was just right.Fish was good, chips could have been crispier and hotter,so let down the dish overall. Burger: The burger was dry (overcooked) which was a shame as the meat is obviously quality. Again skin on Fry's could have been hotter. Overall comment: The decor and ambience of the Pheasant was nice, but the food was just good and let it down. Not bad enough to complain about but a quality burger at £17.50 should have been better. Both chips served were not served hot, just warm, maybe have been under a heat lamp as the triple cooked were not crispy enough. Just didn't feel like it was just cooked and sent from the kitchen. Cost with drinks £45

Had an evening meal here prior to the Cartmel Trail race the next day. Staff were very friendly, they took us through the specials on the board and we both plumped for the homemade chicken, leek and bacon pie with colcannon mash and veg. We were offered (and accepted!) a little jug of the pie gravy halfway through the meal. The whole thing was absolutely delicious!! My friend opted for the ginger sticky toffee pudding which she said was lovely, I was unable (alas) to fit a pudding in!

This is personal. Location may seems off for most but I love the quietness. Country side feeling and superb farm field view. Service was super excellent and friendly. This is not a typical 24 hours man hotel or guest house. There is no check in counter - and at first found a little odd that I had to register all the guests and its details one day before arrival. After arrival - then I knew. Regardless- love everything about it. Love all the people. Thank you so much for your kindness. It feels like part of big family

Visited here after doing the Humphrey Head walk. The staff (Mel, Lyn, Paul and Scott) were so kind and welcoming. Helping us with our 6 month old and couldn’t do enough for us. The food was out of this world. Great service thank you very much.

We went for an evening meal. The food was of a high standard. We were seated in the dining area and waited for half an hour before getting up and going to the desk for someone to come and take our order. I had caught the waitress's eye at 15 minutes who said she'd be with us shortly but it didn't happen. Once we ordered our food the service was all right but we didn't stay for dessert.

We were staying locally and had heard great things about this Inn. We have a dog so were pleased we would be able to dine here with her. Booked a table through their website and arrived to a friendly welcome. The staff made a fuss over our little Yorkie which was so lovely! We ordered 3 Full English Breakfasts and they came after 10 or so minutes. Absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. If we're ever on holiday again in the area we'd definitely return! Thankyou!

Nestled at the crossroads of three northern counties, The Black Swan is a charming 18th-century pub that offers an inviting blend of elegance and comfort. Owned by Louise Dinnes and her family for over 16 years, this delightful establishment features beautifully appointed rooms and a lovely beer garden. Guests can indulge in a complimentary cooked breakfast each morning, setting the perfect tone for exploring the stunning landscapes of Yorkshire Dales National Park and Cumbria nearby.
We spent a wonderful couple of nights at The Black Swan for our anniversary. What an amazing find! We received a warm welcome from Ocean who showed us to our beautiful room with its large ensuite. We loved the quirky decor and lighting, particularly in the dining areas. Then there was the fabulous food at breakfast and dinner. Absolutely exquisite and a real treat! A special mention, again, for Ocean and also Katherine for their friendly attentive service. Thank you so much for a very special stay!

We only went for Sunday lunch. What a beautiful place. I think we will have to return and stay a couple of nights. A very warm welcome and Sunday lunch was so so so good. The beef was cooked to perfection (medium), a huge Yorkshire pud, delicious gravy and the vegetables cooked to perfection. Thank you so much to the lady who took us to our seat and served us (sorry didn't get her name) but she was just lovely and friendly. Visit if you can. The decor inside is something to see. A quaint place to stay and eat. *****

Arrived to a free upgrade into a beautifully spacious en suite bedroom providing everything we needed. We had an afternoon drink in the lovely beer garden followed by a stroll through the village and around a charming village golf course. We enjoyed our evening meal and breakfast the following morning in the delightful dining room. The staff were extremely attentive and friendly. Only problem was we only stayed one night!

It’s a beautiful setting but the service and standards are awful. The lady who greeted us had little to no customer service skills. Bar staff were few and far between. Service for breakfast was abysmal, it took forever and we had to clarify the order three times to get it correct. Then it was brought to us missing some of the key components. The shower was unusable as it had no pressure and went from scolding hot to freezing cold.

Just wanted to say that Our stay at The Black Swan was absolutely fantastic. The whole team are a total delight , so very very welcoming. The restaurant is superb absolutely first class , oh and the amaretto desert is the nicest pudding I think i have ever had , and I’m not a pudding person either ! Breakfast was delicious with wonderful organic produce and a great selection of options. We stayed in Room 15 and it was absolutely stunning with an huge bathroom and a log fire for winter nights , oh and it’s and super doggy friendly too ! What a fabulous place The Black Swan is , it’s exceptional, and we can’t wait to come back again

The menu features an array of dishes made from exceptional local ingredients, such as Cartmel Valley venison suet pudding and vanilla creme brulee with lavender shortbread.
Really enjoyed a recent meal here for a birthday celebration. Nice old style pub with amazing food and service. Highly recommend the venison pudding and scallops! Look forward to coming back soon

Quiet village pub with a Michelin star heart. We walked in and felt very welcome. We decided to try the 10 course taster menu. Absolutely blown away by the food. Everything was perfect! The herb fed chicken with mushroom purée and their take on a coronation croquette were worth a mention from the main courses. The poached apricot with peach liquor and apricot iced cream was hands down the nicest dessert ever! 100% worth a visit. Excellent value for money for what you get.

Lovely pub with a great tasting menu. The wine pairing was particularly good, the standout was a Spanish vermouth with the tiramisu. Dog friendly was a real bonus.

We have dined here before when on holiday in the lakes and we were looking forward to returning as everything was amazing last time. However the service tonight was poor, not very friendly, not very attentive. Never checked to see if we wanted more drinks or refilled our water throughout our main and dessert courses. Food was lovely but not quite at the level it had been previously. Would expect more for price point and compared to our previous experience.

My wife and I dined here last night to celebrate both her birthday and the birth of our son. We had the tasting menu which consisted of 10 delicious courses. My wife enjoyed the mocktails on offer while, I had had the wine pairing. Szandra came and explained all about the wines that I would be having throughout the evening and how they paired with each meal. Each one was perfect with the food. I also have a nut allergy which they catered for with no problems. The service was excellent with emails before we even got there, to the explanations of ingredients in each course for me. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Thank you for helping us celebrate.

Wonderful meal to celebrate our pearl anniversary, complimentary glass of fizz to start (thank you). Everything was delicious from start to finish and a box of petit fours to take home. They certainly deserve their Michelin star. Three course meal for £69 very reasonable for the quality of the food. We pre-booked a dog friendly table. We ate souffle and pasta for starters, hogget for main & tart and creme brulee for dessert.

Great restaurant. We had a booking that we moved a few days later. Unfortunately they had no record of the change. Panic. However the staff were accommodating and found us a table. The food was really good, the atmosphere was very cosy and pleasant. The service I would say was a 3 star, as the staff seemed to be over busy, maybe they were a little short on numbers. Would definitely recommend.

My partner and I visited for her birthday recently and were blown away by the quality in both food and service of the staff and the Dog & Gun Inn. The vibe here is a perfect combination of relaxed and high quality food from the surrounding area. Where to start with the food..? My partner convinced me to join her with the tasting menu, as I was concerned there might not be enough to fill me up 😂, thank god I was wrong. Every single dish was amazing with personal highlights of the Lamb Bhuna and the Dover Sole 🤩. Added bonus of being able to bring our dog along with us (Tell me another Michelin star restaurant where you can do that 🥰🤎) who was made to feel welcome by the staff and relaxed the whole evening. Thank you again D&G for making the birthday celebrations very memorable. We will certainly be back to visit again in the future ☺️🙏🏽

One of the best brew beer I ever had just try their “Boats n hose” beer,It’s amazing. They also serve pizza , garlic bread and nachos. We had pizza that was really good, but garlic bread was okay and too salty.Nice ambience and lake view .Highly recommend

Always a lovely place to visit. Pizzas are always amazing. Quiet today as a weekday out of season and a rainy day. One of our favorite places to visit and never disappoints.

Sit back, Relax with great views and atmosphere to match! We have been visiting Bowness for years and have somehow missed out on the Boater Bar until now. What a mistake! This bar and restaurant is a true gem with its stunning views of the lake and various seating options, including a large outdoor sun terrace. The Bar offers a great selection of wines, spirits, and craft beers at very reasonable prices. nd for sports enthusiasts, the bar does not disappoint; numerous large screen TVs are strategically placed so you can catch the action from almost any seat. We was lucky enough to visit on a Tuesday and made the best of the Pizza offer they had on, we would have loved to try a coffee and cake after but our stomachs were so full! But defiantly on our visit. We visited on a Tuesday, which happened to be their pizza offer day, and I must say, the pizza did not disappoint! It was delicious and definitely hit the spot. While we were tempted to indulge in coffee and cake afterward, we were too full to manage another bite – but it’s definitely on our list for our next visit! If your visiting the area area the Bar is easily accessible with multiple parking options nearby. The staff are super friendly, enthusiastic, and contribute to the bar's great atmosphere. We can't wait to return on our next visit to Bowness. thanks Rebecca.

Went for Craftanoon tea that we had been bought as an Xmas pressie. Choice of pizza was brilliant ( you could also upgrade) and great choice of beers to try. Staff were lovely and friendly and food was amazing. Will be back and highly recommend if you are in the area.

One of the best lineups of craft beer available in the Bowness / Windermere area, all at reasonable prices served by friendly staff. TNT sports on the large monitors, loads of charging points and what must be one of the most stunning views of Lake Windermere from the terrace.

Lakefront Perfection at The Boaters Bar The Boaters Bar is an absolute gem tucked right on the edge of Lake Windermere—easily one of the best dining views in the Lake District. We enjoyed the most incredible homemade pizzas, perfectly crisp and full of flavour, all while overlooking the glittering water and a marina full of sleek, high-end boats. It doesn’t get more picturesque than this. The atmosphere strikes a lovely balance between laid-back and luxe, and their house-made gins are a must-try—refreshing, smooth, and the perfect lakeside indulgence. Whether you're popping in for a casual bite or sipping cocktails as the sun sets over the lake, Boaters Bar delivers on all fronts. Great food, stellar drinks, and unbeatable views. Don’t miss it!

We had a prebooked "Crafternoon Tea" which comprised of a flight of six beers and two pizzas of our choice. We were given a welcome by a very friendly and enthusiastic member of staff, Rebecca, who showed us to a reserved lake view table. She clearly explained all our options, the background to the bar and the beer we would be tasting. The beer was good and the pizzas were great. Our experience was so good that returned for breakfast the following day. We served the best bacon and sausage breakfast roll we've ever had!! Highly recommend Boaters Bar!

Nestled in the charming village of High Newton, Heft is a delightful transformation of an old pub into a sophisticated dining experience that opened its doors in the summer of 2021. The brainchild of local couple Kevin and Nicola Tickle, this restaurant showcases their deep-rooted connection to Cumbria's culinary heritage. With Kevin’s impressive background at renowned establishments like L'Enclume and Forest Side, diners can expect a menu that reflects both innovation and tradition.
We went for the £50 set lunch mid-week and very much enjoyed it. It is interesting and well-prepared food and in general the service was very good. The wine list gets a special mention as it has a lot of interesting wines by the glass. My main criticism would be that they do not have a phone so if you have any last minute issues (which we did) there's no quick way to give them a heads up. Would definitely go again.
Alex P — Google review
We went to Heft for Sunday Dinner full of high expectations. This is not our first time at a Michelin starred restaurant and have been to a few in the area that have been fantastic. We received a warm welcome in the bar on arrival and had drinks whilst we waited for our table. We ordered the beef, which can only be ordered for two people, not individually. All the sides were lovely although I think it’s a bit much that you are charged extra for gravy and it wasn’t that flavoursome! Our biggest issue was the beef. I like my beef rare but only when it is a good piece of beef. Ours had a lot of sinew in it and therefore was not easy to eat. We had a few pieces that were ok but not particularly full of flavour. Both the desserts we had were nice- pavlova and sticky toffee pudding but pretty standard. The staff were efficient but not particularly engaging and just seemed to want to put the food down and go. We really wanted this to be a great experience and it’s such a shame it fell short.

I think we were expecting too much. Four of us walked an hour from where we were staying as this was the nearest place with food. We didn't want the posh dining so went for the bar food. The two things we all wanted were sold out (it wasn't late) so we elected for shepherds pie. This turned out to be a very small pie (almost comedically so tbh), with gravy and red cabbage. There were no other veggies available. Whilst tasty, it was very small, and there were no options to add sides. The gravy was excellent, but I don't consider it to be a side. Pudding was a small bar of chocolate. All in, one of the most disappointing pub meals I've ever had. Beers were good, so no complaints there. Atmosphere quite nice in an old pub that's been updated kind of way. I think this place needs to rethink what it's doing in the bar area - why have a Michelin starred restaurant in one half, and then something so disappointing in the other?

I made this reservation after searching for a nice place to visit to finish our holiday in The Lake District. For us Heft was a 25/30min drive from our accommodation. We were not disappointed, everything from the bread and butter to our desserts was fantastic. We had the Sunday 2 course menu and chose the beef which was melt in the mouth moorish! We ordered additional sides, definitely more than we needed but wanted to try everything that appealed to us. Heft is located in a lovely spot, even if you just wanted to sit outside with a glass of something refreshing. I would definitely visit again and would recommend to anyone in the area to try.

Early evening Sunday dinner was delicious at Heft. We had the hoggett with cauliflower and macaroni cheese; we didn't need the potatoes as portions are generous. Good quality ingredients simply but deliciously done. The absolute stand out of the meal was the sticky toffee pudding which tasted like the hard toffee my grandma used to make - I'd go back just for that. Great wine and friendly service too.
Sarah P — Google review
Lovely country location. The front of the restaurant is rustic, the main dining is done in a modern theme, I preferred the rustic look. The food was not amazing. Some dishes were salty and flavors were either too strong. Nothing was delightful. The food presentation was to a hight standard, but the proof is in the eating. Sadly we did not enjoy the food.
The S — Google review
We went to Heft for their famous Sunday lunch to celebrate a family occasion. And their already amazing reputation came out of this unscathed. The food was fantastic in every respect: presentation, variety, generous portions (yes, we did take a “Heftovers” bag home), and oh-so-delicious taste and flavours. Service, especially from junior serving staff, was great.

The Punch Bowl Inn is a charming Lakeland inn located in Crosthwaite, between Kendal and Windermere. The pub exudes a cozy country feel with its low beams, flagged floors, and cushion-crammed window-seats. The menu offers assured yet unpretentious cooking, featuring dishes like lamb with boulangere potatoes and pan-roasted sea bream with saffron potatoes.
We where staying in Millon for a few nights. Came to the Punch Bowl for Sunday roast. It was delicious. Portion was great. Service was great. Sarah was very chatty. We had 4 drinks 2 Sunday roast and 1 dessert all for under £55. Definitely worth a vist.

A proper village pub serving very good food. Steaks & burgers seem particularly popular. Some South African items on the menu which is rather unique. Friendly and attentive staff.

Went for Sunday lunch with no expectations. We booked a table and arrived on time. The young man sat us st a table and got us drinks, after about 5 minutes he brought us menus, he was very good and explained about the Sunday dinner and the specials board. We both ordered beef with all the trimmings. When it arrived it was a big plateful and was presented beautifully. The food itself would not have been out of place in any restaurant. The beef was laid on a bed of red cabbage, vegetables were just right and not mushy. The Yorkshire pudding were large and held the gravy well. This was the best meal out for a long time and worth more than we paid for. Beautiful food at a very reasonable price. Thank you.

We visited on Sunday (group of 6) and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We had the specials chicken ham and leek pie, leek and potato soup, steak and stout pie and other items off the menu. Fantastic location in the most dramatic and beautiful valley. Friendly service and great food for hungry fell walkers. Lovely wine and great ales too. Yes it can get busy but after taking this place over from the National Trust the team seem to have got it right.

What a great pub to stumble across at the bottom of the path down from Stickle Tarn. After 6 hours walking the Langdales, Lanty Slee's at Stickle Barn was just what we needed. We stayed for the blues singer on the Saturday evening who was great - and returned on the Sunday for an early dinner. The views from the outside seating are unbeatable, as was the epic Sunday roast. It's a really nice place to gather with other walkers - highly recommend stopping by.

It used to be way better. The first time we went, there wasn't much wrong. We went twice in the last visit to the Lakes and the food is very good. The foot long hot Dog and Fries is nice and very filling. The Guinnes chocolate cake was not nice sadly. The service does unfortunately always seems unhappy and clueless.

Really sad reading some of the reviews on here, when pubs are shutting left right and centre across the uk people should really be support these venues! We love craft beer and it was a great stop off on our walk, it brings something different to the area. They serve a variety of different beers both keg and cask from local and also small breweries across the uk and the price reflects this. Yes their keg beers are more expensive than a pint of a crappy chain larger but that’s because it’s coming from a small independent brewery. Don’t get me wrong I love a dainty little old fashion country pub but this brings variety to the area which is very welcomed and we will definitely be back to sample their food! It’s been done to a very high standard inside, there’s a great beer garden and the staff are lovely and very knowledgeable!

Nestled in a historic building dating back to 1755, The Black Bull is a charming establishment that stands out in Lockerbie. Part of the Chef & Brewer chain, it has earned a stellar reputation among locals and visitors alike. After arriving from London for work, I found myself drawn to this inviting pub for a couple of pints before heading to my hotel—far more appealing than the typical sterile hotel bar!
My first time visiting Lockerbie (from London for work), and wanted a beer or two before going to my hotel (because I hate sterile hotel bars). Good selection of beers (one or two off on a late Monday afternoon/evening) but very good Guinness @ £4.50/pint. The staff and locals were brilliant! I stayed far longer than I had intended as everyone was really friendly, with great banter. As there were no taxis, one of the bar staff gave me a lift to my hotel. What unbelievable hospitality! I will definitely return whenever I’m in the area.

Seasonal early meal offers yesterday it was 4pm until 6.30pm 2 course for £16.95 not sure of the cost but you can also have 3 courses.. Good value for money. We got there after 4.30pm by the time we finished our meal the place was full. Recommend going early rather than later. We had pie of the day shown on specials board as chicken, ham & leek.. Was packed full of delicious chunky meat n leek.. Would recommend! Also the chips crispy outside soft in the middle, mushy peas and a jug of gravy.. One of the nicest meals out we have had in a while.. and we are fussy. We opted for dessert I had apple n rhubarb crumble with ginger ice cream ( ice cream was a bit of a small portion) but I wasn't complaining as it was plenty and also delicious. Hubby had sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. He ate the lot. We wouldnt hesitate in returning. Lovely friendly staff very attentive even when under pressure. Service charge added onto your bill.

I recently visited The Flying Pig restaurant in Windermere and tried their pork knuckle menu. The dish was hearty, flavorful, and perfectly cooked—the meat was tender and juicy, with a crisp exterior that gave it just the right texture. The portion size was generous, making it a satisfying choice for anyone with an appetite. The service matched the quality of the food. Staff were attentive, friendly, and made sure everything was served promptly. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, which added to the overall positive dining experience. Overall, The Flying Pig restaurant is a place I would happily recommend, especially for anyone who enjoys classic, well-prepared pork dishes served with a smile.

We ate here twice during our week in Bowness, and popped in for a drink every day. The pub is absolutely exceptional! Food is great, service is excellent and the atmosphere is so friendly. We took our dog with us everytime and we were made to feel so welcome. They have a special dog menu and station for biscuits, water and bowls which is some of the best facilities we’ve ever seen. This pubs website states that the british food is usually described as bland and not good to compared to other countries (which they then said they changed that). however they made perfectly true in the food we were served! took about 5 mins to speak to someone about getting a table and the staff themselves were nice however the food was terrible. we had a roast dinner each (trio meats) and cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets, food took about 20mins to come out which wasn’t terrible timing i suppose, however i would’ve waited longer if that meant i got something hot! the gravy was like water and had no taste and cold, the meats themselves were bland and cold. potatoes were fluffy however not crispy and had no flavour except soil, unsure if you see the theme but they were cold. the veg was good, once again cold. cauli cheese was hot!! and flavourless… yorkshire tasted store bought and not fresh (cold!!!). pigs in blankets were good but not sure how you could mess that up, they were warm! took about 30mins to get a servers attention, i’m not one to complain but it was a disgrace. so i complained lightly to the server ( who was new and was not trained enough to be serving alone, i’ve worked in pubs i know how this should work.) and he was somewhat apologetic, then the manager came over shortly and he was nice about everything and gave us a 10% discount (i did not ask for any discount this was at his own doing) and offered us free deserts for when we next come, which we won’t be.. atmosphere was nice however nice fire and building, cleanliness was good. however does not make up for the disgrace of a roast and service! we left not happy and still hungry. should’ve got ice cream for desert and the running theme was cold through our visit.

I’ve eaten here a fair few times now. The food here is always nice with good portion sizes. This time I had the new pork knuckle which was huge. Had this dish in Prague recently and this was just as tasty. Traditional pub with nice selection of real ales. Recommended.

Absolutely shocking. Ordered the half chicken and the skin on the chicken was burnt. The meat beneath it was dry and over cooked. Didn’t even offer a discount or for it to be taken off the bill. I tried to eat it all but just wasn’t edible! I don’t complain much at ever. Their response was they had a new cook helping the chef. Well that’s not my problem! You can’t serve food like this!!! If they had offered a discount or taken it off the bill I would not be writing this review. They didn’t even try rectifying the situation.

Nestled in the heart of Coniston, The Black Bull is a charming 17th-century coaching inn that has transformed into a welcoming pub-restaurant. With its rustic beams and slate floors, it exudes a traditional ambiance perfect for relaxation. Guests can choose from an array of accommodations, including family rooms, making it ideal for travelers seeking comfort. The Black Bull takes pride in brewing its own ales, such as the beloved Bluebird Bitter, alongside two house-made lagers.
Ventured into the Black Bull for lunch midweek. Large selection of beers, drinks, and ales . More traditional ales rather than craft types which is somewhat typical foe the area. We found one we liked. Food was good pub fare, scampi and fries and a burger which were tasty. Though they also had a very nice menu with lots of other pub food options. Typical traditional pub grub but very much enjoyed. Bit quieter of an atmosphere than other pubs in the area, but it was midweek and out of busy season (and they seemed to be down staff, so a little worn out, but still friendly). Inside and outside seating and we sat outside. It's right on a busy crossroads and on the road, so if you want quieter head inside. If you like to people watch and watch the world go by outside is perfect. Clean and comfy area to sit. Nice place to visit, though, for good pub grub and a pint.

Visited with friends last week. We only drank (time permitted) but wanted to add a review. A very warm welcome from Tracey and the team. Fantastic atmosphere with plenty of laughs and humour. We were a party of 6 with 2 dogs and couldn't of felt more at home. Plenty of room to sit comfortably and not on top of each other. Great selection of ales. Whilst we weren't eating, we could see the food looked good from those who were. Even recommended a fabulous Taxi service (we enjoyed the hospitality a bit too much) Would definitely go back.

Situated at the centre of Coniston. Excellent room. We had a family room over the bank holiday we had 2 large dogs and the space was perfect for us. All the staff, I mean all the staff were friendly and couldn't be more helpful. Good breakfast and had lovely evening meal. My only observation would be all pubs an hotels serve similar menus. Fish and chips, Cumberland sausages with mash, lasagne, burgers, steak. Two fish and chips takeaways as well.Needs to be more imagination or point of difference between the outlets.

Had a really miserable experience here on Saturday evening after a long hike. Visited years ago and it was great but it has really gone downhill. The food was utterly dire and hugely overpriced. I'm not sure how they can make a great old pub this bad. The beer was just ok, the food terrible, the lighting was really bright and intense and it had zero atmosphere. They have complete delusions of grandeur, pushing £20 for a really poor quality burger with cold hard chips. Absolute joke.

Excellent choice of its own (well, next door's) brewery beers, both draught and bottled. It's possible to have a "plank" which is 3 x 1/3 pt of any of the beers. A good way to taste them all. Reasonable menu and food tasty. Pleasant staff. It's really a traditional pub, thank goodness. Seating outside too.

I visited here recently on a travel about the region with my friend, we was met by quite frankly one of the most amazing looking areas, arguably most likely the best pub ive been too, beautiful inside and out, staff are very kind, patient and very informative, i dont understand these bad reviews because we was met with nothing but good vibes, the 'no atmesphere' is only coming from those who go clubbing or think going out to get plastered is what makes a pub a pub, but this gem in the hills is exactly what youd expect a pub to be like when you hear your grandparents stories from their younger days.

Disappointing Food Considering we'd just finished hiking Old Man Coniston I expected to be wolfing down my meal, but we both struggled. No taste whatsoever! I think they use the cheapest ingredients but still charge the same as all the other pubs. At least a friendly waitress offered to replace my undercooked chips (hence the 2nd star). Don't bother eating here!! Plus, a brunette behind the bar, possibly the manager, was quite rude serving. Lots of ale and beer options though.

The Wateredge Inn in Ambleside offers charming rooms, some with private entrances, within a relaxed lakeside pub featuring a vibrant restaurant. The inn is known for its dog-friendly environment, welcoming furry friends in designated indoor and outdoor areas with stunning views of Lake Windermere. Situated on over an acre of private grounds with a jetty overlooking the lake, it provides direct access to the shore for picturesque walks.
We stayed here for a night, on our first trip to the Lake District. The room was very unique, a much more interesting experience than your standard corporate hotel. I found the balcony and bathtub to be stand out features. We were in the building across the street, so not lake front. But you were able to park right outside your room making luggage easy to deal with. Food at the restaurant was good, and the bar was a nice place to spend time. You are a little bit outside of the town center, so it’s more quiet. It takes about 15 minutes to walk along the lake road to the town. The only real complaint we had was that the couch pull out bed was pretty uncomfortable for adults. So unless you are just putting kids in it, you might be better off just bringing an air mattress I would gladly stay here again.

Lovely stay! Great location to explore Ambleside and surrounding area. Easy to get to, parking sorted at checking, plus you get free parking on the day you check out too! Room clean and comfortable. Ample and cozy decoration. Breakfast was brilliant, really good spread and relaxed setup with delicious cooked breakfast. The pub was a big plus!!! Lovely fish and chips and super fast service! Food arrived perfectly cooked and hot! Of course really good fish and chips, light batter and well cooked. Great stay, highly recommend!

We stayed here just for a night and have a very comfortable stay. They bed was just the right firmness, not too soft, not too hard, so we both managed to get a good nights rest. There are some amenities in the room such as tea and coffee making, although the room could really do with a mini fridge. We brought out plug in cool box to allow us to have cold drinks. The bathroom was small, although the shower pressure was good, and it was nice to see good quality soap and shampoo / shower gel. The breakfast was average. It's a buffet style and the quality of the food wasn't great, e.g. the hash browns were soggy and oily, the eggs were overdone, and whilst I like buttered mushrooms, these were on another scale of butteredness! We also found the staff weren't too attentive with us to begin with. The hotel is ideally located though, right next to the lake. It's really lovely to sit at, especially in the evening having a beer or two. Overall we had a lovely time, and would go back.

Stayed here for a couple of nights. The room was very comfortable, bathroom maybe a little small, very large, comfortable bed though. Breakfast was fine, help yourself buffet style. Lots of dog walkers here, so you have to not mind them. The hotel is ideally situated right next to the lake and there is also free parking for residents. We enjoyed our stay, and would recommend.

Just stayed here with a group of friends and had a lovely time. Really good location on the lake, plenty of guest parking. Rooms were fine with nice touches. Full breakfast included in your stay. We ate in one night too and the food was lovely. Would highly recommend to all.

I just spent two nights here and it was fantastic! The room was spot on – massive bed, spotless, and those toiletries smelled amazing. The food / breakfast was delicious. The staff were lovely, making check-in a breeze and checking in on me during meals. I left feeling truly pampered and can't wait to come back! Amazing location with stunning views of Windermere

The Wateredge Inn is the perfect location for a pint on a sunny afternoon. Nice decor, amazing views. However the staff seem to swan about aimlessly and they desperately need more staff on the bar as it can easily take 20+ minutes waiting for a pint. There is plenty of seating and if it is full good luck. It’s a victim of its own success.

It's a popular stop for hikers on the Dales Way walk and is pet-friendly with a cozy atmosphere, open fire, and outside seating.
Spotlessly clean room with lovely view over the town and surrounding hills. Very comfortable bed and nice to have Yorkshire tea! A really friendly and welcoming service from all staff. The breakfast was truly delicious and of a very high quality. In a perfect location. Incredible value for money and we will definitely be back!

We stopped for a beer and a bit garlic bread on a lovely sunny afternoon. The town was packed and although this is only a couple of minutes off the beaten track it was quiet enough to get a bench outside. Plenty of great beer to choose from and the landlord clearly knows what they're doing and all the ones we tried were crystal clear and delicious. Restaurant area looked nice too

Visited the Royal Oak on the 1st July for a day trip, so we thought we would try the Royal Oak Pub. I have to say it was absolutely lovely, the atmosphere, the young girl (Hannah) was absolutely amazing, if it wasn't for her we wouldn't have even experienced the quality of the venue. The food was brilliant, an hidden gem!! She is an absolute asset to the business. I am a business man and Hannah is someone I would love to have working for me. Having been shown the rooms by Hannah they really are lovely compared to the Angel and the Albert. I will definitely book a room here. Lovely. Thank you Hannah. X

Stumbled across this lovely pub after walking around Boness, found it on a side street away from the main roads and glad we did! We sat outside and had a lovely lunch. The service/grounds/bar is great and the food was just what we wanted! And bonus points for making our dog a sausage for his lunch (we asked when ordering ours). Will be back when visiting the lakes!! 👍🏼

We didn’t stay here but had a lovely Sunday lunch. I had steak and ale pie and my husband had a roast lamb and both were delicious! Really cosy vibe with an open fire, dog friendly and the staff are really nice. Would recommend for sure!

Stayed for a couple of nights in Room 2. The bedroom was spacious, tastefully decorated and the bed was incredibly comfy. The bathroom is a little dated, but it is clean and a good size. There is customer parking at the pub. The spaces are a little small, but we were warned of that in advance and it wasn't a problem. Breakfast in the morning was delicious and just enough on the plate to set us up for the day. We also ate at the pub on our first evening and really enjoyed the home cooked meals, especially the meat and potato pie. Bowness can get quite noisy on a weekend. Being an old building, some of that noise can be heard in the room, but it didn't disturb us.

Nice little food place. The restaurant is cozy downstairs in the pub. The fish and chips is very nice, a large portion. We also had the gammon and caesar salad which were delicious as well. Reasonable prices and friendly service.

Myself and husband have stayed since Tuesday going home this morning. The check in was smooth we were greeted by Luke who is very polite and showed us to our room. The room was spotlessly clean thanks to Carrissa the cleaner with a great bathroom including huge walk in shower but the best bit is the view of the lake I could never get board of that. We stayed in room 8. The bar 🍻 was great as well lovely and cosy again with fantastic service from Luke who by the way does the most amazing cocktails. We were literally just a few steps from the restaurants and eateries but the Angel Inn just down the road 5 mins walk does delicious food and also Mio Mondo 2 mins walk away for the best breakfasts and toasties. The lake is also just at the bottom of the road we recommend you do the boat 🚢 trip. We would most definitely stay here again and recommend to anyone. Thankyou Westmorland Inn you were all fantastic 😊

Ate here several times before lock down and the food was always good. Last night I had the most amazing and best fish pie ever! So tasty and stuffed full of gorgeous fish, topped off with golden cheesey mash. Peas and samphire also cooked to perfection. Husband had the Korean chicken thigh burger which he said was excellent, high praise from him

Don't judge a book by it's covers... Booked Sunday Lunch, feared the worst when we walked through the pub door.. How wrong I could be... Staff very friendly, restaurant downstairs, had the roast beef Sunday lunch, what can I say ... This chef can cook a proper roast, med rare rump of beef, all the trimmings, good gravy, and to finish proper pudding!! Absolutely spot on, eaten at far pricer establishments and had nowhere near the quality of food... A hidden gem....

Nice big room. Decent shower room. Nice tea, coffee and hot chocolate provided. The only thing was we were at the front of the building. Must be a loose manhole cover on the road and it was loud when cars drove over. Not the hotels fault. Nice, helpful check in. Fantastic location.

Avoid this bar! Was in last night (Wed 1st Oct) with my wife sitting at a high table having some drinks. Went to the toilet and when I came back an old female sitting at the bar had taken my seat away and was sitting on it ! Obviously the bar stool she had been already sitting on wasn't big enough for her! There were plenty of free seats but she wanted mine. My wife was still sitting at the table and challenged her . She ignored her and started bitching away with her herd. I told my wife to drink up and l went outside to order a taxi . I was followed by a male in the women's company to see what I was doing. He stayed outside listening in until I went back inside . We grabbed our jackets and waited outside for the taxi. Everywhere else locals have been great such a shame area let down by a few entitled privilidged idiots. Only 1 star as I have to give it some sort of rating.

The Brown Horse Inn, located in Winster just three miles away from Bowness, is a charming 1850s coaching inn offering a range of rooms including family options and self-catering facilities. The inn features a rustic restaurant serving dishes made with produce from the owners' farm. The cozy bar and play area outside make it an ideal spot for families. Renowned for its fantastic service and food, this quaint inn has received praise for its steaks and hearty portions.
We had an absolutely fantastic experience at the Brown Horse Pub. The service was exceptional and the staff were so friendly, efficient, and genuinely welcoming, which really made the visit special. The food was outstanding, cooked to perfection, and truly faultless – every dish was full of flavour and beautifully presented. The facilities were spotless and very well-maintained, which added to the overall comfort and enjoyment. I couldn’t be more satisfied with my visit with the family. This place s highly recommended and I’ll definitely be coming back very soon! Great work to all those working in the pub restaurant.

We had a 3 night stay in the 'pods' run by the owners behind the pub and because the food was so good we ate here all 3 nights, no need to go further. We both had the rib-eye steak first night which was deliciously done, juicy and tasty with a lovely garlic and chive butter which made it indulgent. Nice green bean and chunky chips. Yum. Then 2nd night we both chose the chicken and mushroom pie which had been freshly done. Again delicious, plenty of chicken pieces in a lovely creamy sauce and the pastry was flaky and buttery and not too thick. Smooth mash and flavoursome gravy. Yum. Night 3 we actually chose different dishes 😂 my wife had the fish pie which was also delicious, creamy mash, plenty of fish and prawns, generous portion which was polished off. I chose the fish and chips which again was a generous portion, big piece of fish in good crispy batter nicely cooked. Nice tartare sauce, mushy peas and plenty of fries. Really nice. Oh forgot to mention the desserts we shared, 1 sticky toffee pudding, 1 mess dessert and a few dollops of ice cream, all were yummy. Thanks to the staff who were friendly and smiley and attentive at all times and the kitchen crew for producing really good food. Out of the way and some dishes a little pricey but would definitely recommend.

Extremely professional set up and a great chef I the kitchen! Thanks again

Nestled in the heart of Ambleside, Lake Road Kitchen is an intimate dinner-only restaurant that offers creative locavore tasting menus with optional wine pairings. The modest yet chic space sets the stage for a culinary journey led by chef James Cross, who draws from his experience at Noma in Copenhagen to create radical cuisine.
Did the 5 course meal to dip our toes into our first Michelin locally, definitely plan to do the 12 course. The flavors and dishes were well thought out and beautifully layered. The salmon dish and peas were PHENOMENAL. We even took home some fermented butter, which was insane! Definitely will make our way back and well worth the experience.

This food is unforgettable. This is the first Michelin-starred restaurant my wife and I have been to. My wife is vegan and I ordered the vegetarian menu. They were so accommodating and recreated most of the dishes based on our restrictions, but the food tasted like it was meant to be that way to start. The staff was also great, they were super friendly. Overall I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. The only negative was that it ruined the rest of the food during my stay.
Amanda R — Google review
We had the 8 course tasting menu in the wonderful Lake Road Kitchen. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and very professional. The food was exceptional. This is what a tasting menu is all about. Not everything scored top marks for us but we still recognised the skill and invention that had gone into the dish. The salmon was our favourite and the cheesecake was exquisite. A truly wonderful experience and we would thoroughly recommend.

It was a perfect place to wrap up my holiday. My friend recommended me the LRK and it was worth it! My favourites were iberico with egg yolk, octopus and wagyu and all the rest! Basically I haven’t left anything. I’m not a sweet tooth but both desserts were just right for me. Some sauce was a bit salty for me, but it’ll be okay for most people. Service was great and wine pairing was great too! Thank you!

Great Michelin restaurant, perfect for a date. The intimate setting with few tables makes it feel private and special. The food was delicious, though we expected a bit more “wow” from the menu. Service was superb.
Kwang S — Google review
We chose the 12 course meal with an added course and dessert, and it was worth every penny! Every plate was beautifully plated, and phenomenal. The head chef, James came out to explain several of the dishes in detail, from what makes the ingredient unique, to how it was sourced and prepared. The explanations of every dish made this a fascinating experience that set it apart from other Michelin restaurants since it’s never the chef, and the plates are not always explained in detail. The other servers/chef were all kind and friendly as well. We also loved how certain ingredients were paired with preparations that you would never think of, such as pea miso or barley koji. Being Japanese, I loved how old Japanese methods were used on untypical ingredients. Lastly, James and Darren (sommelier) chose a few wines for us, and they went perfectly with our meal. The wine pairing would be a good choice at this restaurant. The dishes are spaced with enough time that you wouldn’t have to rush drinking every glass, and their wines are incredible. If you are visiting Ambleside, this restaurant is a must! It was the highlight of our time in the UK, and will definitely be back if we’re ever in Ambleside again.

I was surprised with the 8 course tasting menu for my 25th birthday! James, chef patron, was a legend. You can tell he cares so much about his food. The bread was the BEST bread I've ever had. The butter that came with it was dry aged and it tasted meaty with the bread. My favourite dish, although it's hard to choose, was the salmon. I savoured every bite. I crave for pistachio gelato every time I visit a hot country in Europe. To have this at home in the Lakes, and not only this, but the best quality pistachios paired with British cherry jam. Incredible. Also, shout-out to Darren who was an exceptional server. Hats off, the experience really felt once-in-a-lifetime as I'll remember this meal for the rest of my life. They also made me feel very special on my birthday, which I didn't expect at all. Worth every single ££ spent and it was a privilege to be able to go there.

The wine pairing was impeccable, enhancing the flavours of each course. The attention to detail and the passion for culinary excellence are evident in every bite. The Blacksmiths Arms in Broughton Mills is a historic pub dating back to 1577, with an unchanged internal structure featuring oak paneling, original range, and oak-beamed ceilings. It's the only pub in the Lake District on the National Inventory of Historic Pubs, offering a nostalgic journey into the past. This was my second visit here, much improved from my previous visit. Although they were obviously short staffed, they looked like they knew what was going on and had everything under control all whilst being friendly and welcoming. The local village event was happening at the time of our visit, so can only imagine how busy they were, but staff handled it well. The hotel itself could do with a little TLC, but the atmosphere was thanks to staff and other guests was spot on An ideal location for visiting some beautiful areas Hotel in a stunning location

Location was stunning, but that's about it. It has the vibe of recently transitioning from a well loved family run business, to just another property run by a chain. They felt understaffed, the rooms were adequate, but not updated (musty ane mismatched). Not what I would expect for the price. Dinner took 80 minutes to come out for the Sunday roast, and the portion was smaller than I'd have hoped for 20+ quid. Tasty though. Breakfast was good value and the service much faster. It just feels like the owners are trying to squeeze the most out based on the Location rather than putting any effort or care into the property.

We popped here on a Friday evening for dinner with our teens, when everything else was super busy. It was great, staff were friendly, food was delicious and the outside seating was perfect. We enjoyed the live music from next door without the crowds. It wasn't cheap, but nowhere is these days. It looks like they have some excellent midweek and lunchtime offers on, so we may return later in the week. Would definitely recommend.

Just spent two nights at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. This is the second time we have stayed. Room was good, service very friendly staff. The New managers are a young friendly couple who could be a real benefit to the hotel. Will defiantly be back. Thanks for a great few days. Mickledon valley walk in photo

We had the most wonderful long weekend here! From the moment we arrived, the setting took our breath away — a beautiful waterfall (gyll) directly from the hotel and sheep dotting every fell around us. It truly felt like a peaceful escape into nature. The staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly — nothing was too much trouble. It’s also a genuinely dog-friendly place, which made our stay even more special. Our mornings started perfectly sat on the terrace. Although the wasps were a bit annoying, but can’t be helped! Yes, the rooms are a little dated, but they were cosy, clean, and absolutely ideal for kicking off our walking boots after a day on the trails. We even spent a lovely evening in the drawing room with a few drinks brought right to us — such a nice touch! Thank you for a brilliant stay. We’re already planning our next visit!

Stayed several times over the years at the NDG, welcome always friendly, rooms functional with views of the Langdale hills. Never been disappointed by the food, especially the breakfasts, just what you need before walking the Langdale fells. Special mention to staff members Diane and Nigel without whom the hotel would not function as well as it does.

Excellent spot in the Langdale valley. Spectacular views and right walking trails from the door step, better still you return straight into the Pub! Adam was very accommodating and welcoming throughout our stay.

The Hare & Hounds Inn, located in the quiet village of Levens, is a 17th-century coaching inn that has been revitalized by its young owners while maintaining its traditional charm. The inn features classic rooms with Wi-Fi and serves food along with real ales. The interior exudes a cozy atmosphere with snugs, slate floors, low-beamed ceilings, and vintage-y chairs.
The pub sits at the top of a beautiful drive up, the staff were absoluely fantastic to fit a table of 8 walk ins on a Saturday night! The staff were really friendly and did not rush us or make us feel like we were a burden unlike other places in the Lakes. The food was absolutely fantastic, the pork was to die for along with the blackpudding mash. The scampi had the biggest prawns I had ever seen and the batter was so flavourful. The fish and chips also looked huge. This place was great for value with fantastic staff and a great atmosphere. Would definitely come back.

Really lovely pub in a beautiful location. The food was fantastic, couldn't recommend enough. The only negative was the lack of vegetarian options, which wasn’t great for my partner. Fortunately I eat meat, so I was well catered for. We had intended to eat at the Mason Arms, fortunately they were booked out, which was great because we found this little gem instead. Book a table, you won’t regret it. Highly recommend.

Absolutely lovely hotel/pub and ideally located when holidaying in the Lakes. It allows easy access to the more populated areas but is nestled in a lovely quiet location with some super local walks. From arrival to departure, the friendly attentive staff were first class and always at hand if you needed anything; it was a pleasure to stay here. The food was fantastic. Great portions, quality produce beautifully prepared; just what was needed after a day on the hills. We will return and I’d thoroughly recommend this hotel. Thank you. ☺️

Writing the review whilst we are sat here as we’ve had the most amazing Sunday roast and exceptional service from the amazing Ellis who has made our afternoon. All the staff have been so welcoming and the food made the experience absolutely perfect, ended up ordering 3 courses!

Really enjoyable meal, liked it so much we cancelled another restaurant and came here twice on our holiday. Every element of the food was exceptional, right down to little details like the tiny wooden spoon for salt and pepper. Service was great and made to feel welcome. Will definitely be back again for another visit soon.

Popped in at 1500 to book a table for dinner. Waited at the bar for 5 minutes and when no-one showed up, walked through to what appeared to be the dining room. Greeted by, who I assumed was the chef. I mentioned I was hoping to speak to someone about booking a table for dinner and another older gentleman just blurted ‘yep’. A lady then escorted me back to the bar telling me they were very busy but ‘what time do I want?’ I requested as late as possible and that wasn’t possible, they only had 6pm. Now this wasn’t my issue, it was more the fact I was made to feel like a complete inconvenience interrupting their conversation.

We visited as a family party of 14 on a quiet Monday night and had the best service and food. The team were so accommodating, and the atmosphere was absolutely lovely. Highly recommend the Hare and Hounds – we’ll definitely be back! We are locals and loved it
Robin B — Google review
Lovely little hotel in a perfect Lake District location, with easy access to the main sights and activities. Rooms are in keeping with a ‘classic’ countryside style, very charming, with a massive bathroom and amazing views. Our room (delux) had a few quirks and needed some maintenance: a loose shower head, a broken window latch (which we had to tie shut with elastic bands). We reported the broken window latch, but staff could only say the owners were away. Not their fault of course. Dinner in the restaurant was great, although the service lacked a bit in warmth and engagement. Advice to management: You might want to rethink the breakfast setup. Asking guests to order the night before, fixing the time at 9 a.m., and then adding ~30-minute wait doesn’t work very well, especially for those planning early activities. Offering a broader (earlier) breakfast service window or quicker turnaround would make the experience better. ** updated** the second day was even worse in terms of breakfast. Completely disorganised and random service with everyone sitting waiting for another 30 min for their food.

Beer garden is an absolute hidden gem! Lovely in the sun! Service was great and bar staff all welcoming! Drinks are a little pricey but with the service and sun in the beer garden I’d happily pay it! Didn’t sample the food but couples round us did and I could hear no complaints, and smelt lovey! Will be back

Had such a wonderful stay at the Temperance Inn. Me, my partner and our dog stayed in one of the rooms in the Temperance cottage and loved the huge comfy bed, plus the shower had excellent heat and water pressure. All of the staff we encountered here were so friendly and warm and provided really excellent service. The food was incredible, we had the best full english breakfast here! The location is really central too, close to shops, restaurants and other pubs, and really close to bus stops making it a great base to explore the Lakes from without a car. We can't wait to come back, thank you everyone :)

Wainwrights' Inn is a charming pub with a cozy atmosphere, featuring flagstone floors and open fires. It offers traditional pub food and hosts regular quiz nights. Situated in Chapel Stile, it boasts a picturesque beer garden surrounded by the Langdale fells and overlooking the Great Langdale Beck. The garden provides a perfect setting for enjoying a summer evening with a pint and meal.
Called here after our 10 walk to the Cathedral cave. Lovely Cheese and onion pie and burger. Will be defernetly calling back to try out the rest of the menu. Staff was friendly and toilets clean. :)

Brilliant pub, brilliant food and great atmosphere. We had been for 2 nights, first night was the chicken burger and the second was the fish and chips. The food tasted fresh and the cheesy garlic bread was to die for. The service was fast and everyone was welcoming and chatty. The outside area was nice with the heat lamps and watching the sheep in the nearby field. I loved this place and would love to return again

A Hartley meal and a Solid Base for Lakeland Adventures The Wainwrights Inn, nestled in the heart of Great Langdale, boasts a prime location for exploring the stunning scenery of the Lake District. Its obvious appeal lies in its namesake – a tribute to the renowned Alfred Wainwright – and its promise of hearty food and comfortable lodging after a day on the fells. The Inn is the epitome of a charming pub that perfectly balances warmth and hospitality. Upon entering, the inviting glow of a real open fireplace immediately envelops you, creating a cosy atmosphere that feels like home. Whether you're looking for a cozy spot to unwind or a lively place to gather with friends, this pub has it all. The outdoor area is particularly appealing, offering a large space for dining and drinking that allows you to soak in the stunning surroundings. On a beautiful sunny day, it’s the ideal setting to enjoy the fresh air while relishing a good meal. Speaking of meals, they have an impressive variety of options that cater to diverse tastes. The food we sampled was absolutely delicious—hot, well-cooked, and bursting with flavour. Prices are reasonable, making it a great value for the quality you receive. It’s clear that the kitchen takes pride in crafting each dish, ensuring that every bite is satisfying. During our visit, the pub was quite busy, likely due to the lovely weather. However, the staff remained calm and courteous even as the crowd grew, which speaks volumes about their professionalism and dedication to customer service. We were impressed by how efficiently they managed the influx of customers while still ensuring every customer felt attended to. One important note for future visitors: Wainwrights Inn is cashless, so be sure to have your credit card handy to avoid any unforeseen inconveniences.

Fab first visit to the Wainwright Inn last week. Lovely friendly bar with a large outdoor area for eating and drinking. Great service with very short wait for food The tuna roll with side salad and extra bowl of chips was lovely as was the Bitter. Would definitely recommend a visit and on the 516 bus route from Ambleside too 😁x
Sue B — Google review
Five stars without hesitation. The staff here was fantastic and the Sunday roast was absolutely incredible. I’ve only had a few Sunday roasts in my life, but this one was by far the best. Perfectly cooked, great flavor, and it paired really well with a cold cider on a warm day in the Lake District. The inn has a great patio out front with picnic tables and a beautiful view of the fell across the road. Very dog friendly, and the drink selection was excellent. I had a cider and my wife had an Aperol Spritz, which she said was perfect. Inside, it’s cozy and warm, so whether you sit indoors or outdoors, the atmosphere is great in completely different ways. The staff was friendly and attentive, and it just felt like a place that cares about doing things well. If you’re hiking through the area or just visiting, it’s definitely worth stopping in for a good meal or even just a drink. We did have one disappointing moment when we came back a second time on a Monday evening. We were staying on property at the Brimstone, and Wainwright’s is supposed to serve food until 9:00. We showed up right at 8:00 and saw a sign saying the kitchen would close early that night at 8:20. We hustled in to order at the bar, only to be told the kitchen had already closed at 8:00. That was a bit frustrating because we had been looking forward to trying more of the menu. That said, the staff was kind and apologetic, and we understand sometimes things happen that are out of your control. We ended up going to Stove at the Langdale instead and had a meal there. Still, none of that takes away from how great our first experience was. We’d absolutely come back next time we’re in the Lake District and hope to try the rest of the menu.

My daughter took us for Sunday lunch and I was suitably impressed. When we arrived, we struggled to get parked, good sign, obviously a good venue if its this popular. Inside it was old & dark & full of character. Filled with the buzz of punters having a lovely time. Fortunately we had a table reserved. Our plates arrived and everyone was impressed. I had the beef cheek roast and it was delicious 😋 Then we retired to the gardens with a beer. What a stunning place to sit and enjoy a drink, soaking in those views. Fabulous evening 👍

We didn't go in to eat unfortunately so the review isn't about the food. We stopped here as we were on an outing and we needed to feed our baby & heat up a bottle as the place we originally wanted to go wasn't open. We stopped here hoping they could help & they were very accommodating and got us a jug of hot water 😊. We absolutely would have also stopped for food but they were very busy & fully booked. It was quite obvious why. The food looked amazing!! It was a lovely little pub style restaurant. Super cosy with superb views. It was a shame we couldn't get a table & we had planned to go back for a meal but unfortunately we ran out of time. However next time we are in the area we will 100% book to eat as it was a lovely place! I would recommend it even without eating there, and appeciate them helping us get our baby fed, especially as they were so busy!

10/10 experience. Location was idyllic, helped by the great weather showing off the stunning scenery out of the bedroom and dining room windows. The food was nothing short of excellent and the local ales on tap at the bar were delicious. All of the staff greeted us with a warm smile and made us feel very welcomed and looked after. Our only small issue was the bedroom being a little too hot overnight. This, however, wouldn't put us off staying here again or recommending it to friends and family.

Six of us came for food here, we had beef cheek, and veg, beef and ale pie, and chips, and there was a side of Cumberland chipolatas, and we finished with chocolate and baileys cheesecake, chocolate brownies, and apple and strawberry crumble and custard. Not one of us found anything to complain about, and we all had to stagger to the cars to leave as we were so full! Brilliants old pub, with a gorgeous beer garden outside with beautiful views over the river and surrounding hills. Will be back!
Matthew T — Google review
Lovely little pub with nice rooms and lovely food. Beer selection was good for me but if you don’t like real ale you’re a bit stuck. Service is good but not perfect, if there’s one thing to improve it’s this. It does get busy in the pub as well so you should book.

Popped in after a walk up Crummock water; fully intending to all along since I researched good local eateries to visit whilst staying in Buttermere. Lovely cosy pub, reassuringly busy lunch service going on whilst there with a tight amiable team ticking things over effortlessly. Had the steak and ale pie which was deelish.

Sadly disappointing on this occasion The Lamb and stuffing were very tasty. Unfortunately the whole meal was barely warm and we had to wait whilst another table were served their main course until we received our vegetables to accompany the lamb that had been served earlier.

Pub
Nestled across from the village green in Hesket Newmarket, The Old Crown stands as Britain's first co-operatively owned pub, radiating a charmingly rustic vibe. With its cozy clutter of bric-a-brac and mountaineering gear, it invites visitors to unwind by a warm wood-burning stove. This welcoming establishment is not just about ambiance; it boasts an on-site brewery that ensures a steady supply of delightful local brews like the rich Black Sail stout and refreshing Helvellyn Gold.
Stayed in this village whilst completing the Cumbria way, we visited this pub for our tea and it was delightful. The staff couldn't be anymore accommodating (as we didn't book a table, as we didn't know you had to). We was welcomed in and wasn't rushed off our table at all. The atmosphere was great and the food & drinks bill was cheap!!!! 100% worth a visit if your in the area. Cute little pub with friendly staff & people. Thank you for the delicious food & drinks! X

A proper gem of a pub. They serve amazing local beers, all brewed right in the village - and both the pub and the brewery are run as co-operatives, which gives the place a real sense of community and care. Staff are always warm and welcoming, and there’s a great atmosphere - it feels like a true local without ever being unwelcoming to newcomers. Perfect spot when the sun’s out, with outdoor tables that catch the light in the evening. Inside, there’s a pool table and plenty of space to settle in. Food-wise, the burger is spot on and the onion rings might be the best I’ve had anywhere. Highly recommend if you want something genuine, friendly, and rooted in the local area.

Had an excellent evening here after a day hiking on the Cumbria Way. Its a hidden gem and was a highlight of our trip. The food was great (all of our group were impressed, whether they had lamb, burgers or the cannelloni - and the sticky toffee pudding with thunder and lightning ice cream was incredible), the beer was excellent and the staff went out of their way to be helpful (including digging out some aftersun for one of our group). I wish we had more pubs like this down south!

The old crown is a really cosy and interesting pub. What makes it even better is that it is run by a cooperative. The service and beer was excellent. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We stopped at a lovely pub in Grasmere and it turned out to be the perfect choice on a sunny summer’s day. The garden is absolutely beautiful – a gorgeous spot to sit back, relax and soak up the views. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and the service was impressively quick without ever feeling rushed. A disappointing visit. We ordered a flatbread, focaccia board and fish and chips and were very disappointed with the service. The woman with long dark hair (which was not tied up, which should’ve been our first red flag) may as well have threw our food on the table. She did not ask us if we wanted any sauces or anything and walked off, tossing her hair as she went. We did want sauce, but she came nowhere near us while we were eating for us to ask her. This meant I had to have my fish and chips dry. We were also not asked how our meals were. Had we have been, we would’ve been able to voice that we had found a loose, short grey hair in the focaccia board. It is simply not good enough when paying £21 per meal, I would not recommend to anyone wishing to feel welcomed or looked after. Also disappointing was the fact that they had no straws. I will add that the lad behind the bar was absolutely lovely.

My partner, dog and I have just returned from the most perfect stay at Tweedies. The location is perfect, the breakfast was tasty and the hotel is very cosy and very quiet at night. The restaurant/ pub attached to the hotel serves delicious food, the best roast dinner I think i’ve ever had. Dogs are welcome here, though in the pub dogs can only sit in the bar, where food can also be served. We’d love to come back here if we visit the Grasmere again, thanks for having us!

Always loved this bar, been coming for over 10 years. slightly disappointed with most recent visit. food very average for the price being charged and the price for ales has shot up. Modern British restaurant
Fine dining restaurant
The Old Stamp House Restaurant is a charming British eatery that prides itself on using locally sourced rare breed meats and foraged goods. The restaurant offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with a unique touch of personalization as guests are greeted with a letter from the chef explaining the inspiration behind each dish. Run by Cumbrian brothers, Ryan and Craig Blackburn, the restaurant's menu is heavily influenced by Cumbria's heritage, people, and landscape.
10/10, cozy atmosphere, absolutely amazing courses (including the vegetarian tasting menu too), only gripe would be that the pace at the start was good with food trickling out but by the 4th course it got quite slow and we were there got nearly 3hrs which meant my back started to hurt, didn't take away from the lovely evening though. My bf had the wine tasting menu which was a nice touch but the waiter bringing the wine out was very quiet and seemed almost nervous explaining each wine and we didn't really learn anything from it.
Issy B — Google review
Food, wine pairing, staff friendliness and ambiance of the venue is first class. The chef bringing out the main dish and having a chat with every guest was a nice touch. The restaurant is decorated in dark colours and striking art work. Every single dish was an explosion of flavours that worked perfectly. The only disappointment was my boyfriend made a note on our reservation that it was my 40th birthday (actually the day itself) and offered to pay more money to do some sort of treat over dinner to acknowledge this and nothing was done. And the table next to us got a “happy birthday” from their waitress with a dessert that said “happy birthday” and from a sounds of it another complimentary dessert dish so that was sad for us both to witness when he hoped for something similar especially being such a milestone birthday.

Had zero expectations when booking the Old Stamp House for dinner. To say I was pleasently surprised would be an understatement. A truly special experience start to finish. Impeccable service from when you walk in the door, the level of attention to detail and presentation with each dish is impressive. 11 courses on the atumn menu which are all timed well, use the best of the best produce and every element is carefully thought out and elevated. The best meal I've ever had by far. A must visit for a stay in the Lake District.

An amazing restaurant. Well worth booking ahead of time. Staff were friendly, and professional. Ambience was very comfortable. We went for lunch. All the courses were excellent. A unique experience and would highly recommend.

Great service and excellent value. We loved the opening dishes but felt the latter part of the menu was very heavy and a bit overwhelming in terms of the flavours and depths of the dishes which drops it from being a five star for us. Still, an obviously deserved award winning restaurant with plenty of character, honesty, flair and talent leading the kitchen delivering a down to earth experience. The Crafty Baa in Windermere is a cozy and welcoming spot located at the heart of Cumbria's tourist hub. This family-run pub offers a friendly atmosphere, with a quirky and interesting decor made from 80% upcycled and recycled materials. The bar attracts many visitors due to its warm ambiance, efficient staff, and reasonable prices compared to other areas.
This is a characterful bar with very unusual decor. The staff are friendly but need to been approached to be fully appreciated. On arrival, the generally confused first impression soon gives way an appreciation of what the bar really has to offer. The pub IPA at 6% is worth a try but the fridges should be investigated. Overall this is a pub worth seeking out. I've been to a few and can highly recommend this one!

We absolutely loved the place. My partner highly recommended this during or visit to Windermere. We loved the deco. A one off .Thought the staff were friendly and attentive. Great service. We thoroughly enjoyed the food that we ordered ( Fish fingers sandwich). We would highly recommended to anyone visiting this area. We loved the cheeky naughty menu.

Fun place to try different craft beers. Great selection! We returned on a second trip to the LD, we liked it so much. We went on Sunday night and the bartender (didn’t get his name) with the glasses was friendly and helpful. Let us taste a couple and gave some recommendations to help us choose. Quirky spot to have a pint in Windermere

The Crafty Baa was a really unique pub we visited on our trip to the Lakes. We stopped in for a couple of drinks. We were served by Tom who was an absolute gem. He asked what we liked and gave some reccomendations. We didn't have any food, but the menu looked good and we saw others enjoying a bite to each. If we're ever in the Lakes again, we would 100% visit again. Fabulous offering and so many quirky decor elements to discover.

Cracking tardis like pub in Windermere. Eclectic decor, great range of beers and ciders. Good selection of quirkily named, reasonably priced meals. Friendly staff. Well worth a visit.
Giovanni A — Google review
The Crafty Baa in Windermere turned out to be one of the most fun and memorable pubs we visited on our trip. The vibe was superb—warm, cozy, and quirky with lots of character in its interiors. The décor had a unique, almost rustic charm mixed with creative touches, making it feel inviting and different from the usual pubs. We tried the apple cider and a strawberry + kiwi flat cider, both refreshing and packed with flavor, perfect to enjoy while soaking in the atmosphere. Their drinks menu is impressive, especially the large selection of craft beers, which would excite any beer lover. They also offer a wide variety of cocktails and food, making it a great spot whether you want just a drink or a full evening out. Overall, The Crafty Baa is a fantastic stop in Windermere, blending excellent drinks, quirky style, and an unforgettable vibe.

An absolutely superb themed bar. Great atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor seating. The Baa had an excellent range of beers, ciders and ales on tap as well as refrigerated bottled beers, lagers, cider, IPA and ales. Pipped music sets the scene. Ask for Tom to start your next drinking journey.
Darran L — Google review
This place is amazing, I visited Windermere for work as a travelling bridal makeup artist, and as I was staying over, I wanted to check out somewhere local. The Crafty Baa is such a fun quirky pub and you can see all the hard work and dedication the family have put into creating this place. I had no idea about the haunted room so I had to see for myself, there were folks in there so I didn't get a proper look, but I'll bring my husband next time and we will get a table there. It didn't occur to me that the Crafty Baa meant that it was all craft beers, but with help from the staff, I chose the 1664 IPA, I'm not a beer drinker but it was actually quite nice. For food I couldn't decide between Mac and cheese balls or the good cluckin chicken wrap, so I ordered both and boy were they delicious! It looks small on the outside but there are tables on every floor and the place was packed, I sat outside on the porch. They had a coal fire inside which was lovely but too hot for me, however outside had a heater for when the night air got chilly, there was also shelter when it rained a little. I was visiting on my own and overall had a fantastic wander out before retiring back at the hotel. This one is a place to visit and I'll definitely be back

The Masons Arms, located off the beaten track near Windermere, is a charming 16th-century inn offering rustic-chic dining and cozy accommodations. The pub provides sweeping views of the Lyth Valley and offers colorful rooms filled with character. Guests can choose from split-level suites with mezzanine bedrooms and lovely patios or opt for self-catering cottages for more space.
We were two adults, 1 dog and baby. The waitress that served us was absolutely superb, friendly and accommodating. Fantastic dark ale and fresh fish and chips. Despite my little girl making a mess with her meal we were made to feel welcome from start to finish. This is a proper pub, good grub and beautiful views to top it off.

We chose this pub for a visit last night based on the excellent vegetarian selection on the menu. It's a cosy old inn that was quite a drive over a hill in the dark, but that was part of the fun. It seems quite remote, but given the darkness and our approach it's difficult to know how remote. The starters of a selection of breads and butters, plus the vegetarian sausage rolls were excellent. The Cauliflower Steak and salad mains were also very good. Best meal we've had dining out for a very long time. Highly recommend, and great service too.

Just back from a wonderful nights stay . This was a stop off on the way back from Edinburgh and we cannot recommend this place enough. We wish we had booked for longer. Quirky stylish rooms, excellent food, beautiful location. This place is a hidden gem! All the staff were really friendly and nothing too much trouble. We had the breakfast sandwiches, warning ‼️ there are huge and are the equivalent of a normal Full English 😁 we will be back!

We went for a sunday roast after a hike round windermere. Immediately we were impressed by the ambiance- a roaring fire and a cosy setting was perfect on a cold Sunday. The quality of the roast was brilliant, both the lamb and the beef were tender and flavoursome and all the sides were excellent. Dessert was fab too. Staff attentive and pleasant. If we find ourselves in the lakes again we would return. Thank you
Ryan N — Google review
Lovely setting, reasonable and friendly service just disappointed with the food. We have been to the The Masons Arms a number of times over 50+ years and while we had heard mixed reviews from family (because the pub has been taken over by Robinsons), thought we would give it a go. Unfortunately, while my daughter enjoyed her sausage and mash, both my husband and I were extremely disappointed with the lamb hotpot. It was a 'find the lamb' situation (more like a watery soup), and served with a piece of singed sourdough. While the vegetables were generous unfortunately the main let the meal down. Such a shame as we were hoping to book a table for a large family gathering later in the year.

We had such an amazing stay at Masons Arms. Everyone was so friendly and helpful, especially Eugene. Our room was lovely and breakfast was great! We even had Sunday roast today which was yummy- the sticky toffee pudding was soooo good! Thank you for everything, Eugene. You’re a star! Can’t wait to come back!

We were staying in a nearby airBnB so came here for tea one evening and it's was fantastic. There were brilliant views from our table and the staff were all really friendly. Plenty of good food options, I can definitely recommend the pie! We had a great meal here and I would definitely recommend.

We visited as part of a big group and did cocktail making, dinner and then karaoke. A great venue for groups - 3 different floors with lots to offer. Food portions were huge but the food tasted great! Karaoke was in a room on the third floor - you were able to order drinks via a buzzer and they arrived quick. A great venue to come to as a group!

We really enjoyed our meal, we had the steak board, it is a random fusion of dishes but all were really nice quality. All dishes were seasoned really well and the steak was cooked to perfection. There was so much food we couldn't finish it all.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here, the venue is nicely styled and staff are friendly and enthusiastic about the menu. We started with the crispy lamb bites and crispy pork belly bites, followed by the dirty lee burger and a red thai duck curru that was probably one of the best thai curries I've had with amazing layers or flavour. But the star of the show was the damson blossom cheesecake which was a treat for both the tastebuds and the eyes. Next time we're back in the lake district Baha will definitely be on the list for a repeat visit

Booked here as staying locally. We had 1 starter two main and a bottle of wine. Even though the food was very nice we did think a tad expensive. We never had anyone check to see if our food was nice or to see if we needed anything else. The restaurant was not busy. At £28 for a bottle of house wine it would have been nice to have been asked if we wanted it opening/ pouring but just got it left on our table. Tbh the staff didn’t seem jolly or interested. The walls were marked and could have done with a bit of fresh decoration. But couldn’t fault the food we had. Asked for the bill but after waiting a while we put our coats on and had to go to the bar as our bill never turned up. Our bill had a service charge added so check this as you don’t have to pay it! Overall enjoyed our food but won’t be returning.

Have had nice meals in the past. Today however menu had changed and was dearer alongside a 12.5% gratuity charge My husband's was good but my ploughman's was poor at best. The bread was even stale. Was not asked if our meals were satisfactory. Will not return which is a shame.

We had our first ever drink in KL at The Sun Inn. A lovely Inn set beside the churchyard. Been many times over the years, as has Madge. Flatric's first visit. A good selection of three real ales. Star ratings are meaningless these days. This is a delightful wee country pub with rooms, but right in the middle of the town/village. Couldn't fault the room we were given. Clean, spacious for two, everything you need. The food was varied, plentiful, and faultless. Parking anywhere in town is a problem, but the hotel has an arrangement with the local council, and you get free use of council public car parks. Great place to stop overnight for a break on long journey.

The Wild Boar Estate is a charming and rustic coaching inn that offers classic and upscale rooms, along with a smokehouse and brewery. The establishment provides an alternative afternoon tea experience, featuring delicious mini fish and chips, pork scratchings, pigs in blankets, as well as the traditional scones with jam and cream. Guests can also enjoy a choice of Prosecco or real ale taster alongside tea or coffee. This unique offering has received rave reviews for its array of savory and sweet treats.
Never having been there before, my wife and I recently treated ourselves to two nights at the Wild Boar for our 40th wedding anniversary. What a great choice we made ! As people who rarely find things completely faultless, we met our match with the Wild Boar. The staff were at the top of their game. Naturally friendly and with a ready smile wherever you met them. They are a real credit to this place. Dinner was a real treat, especially the lamb. The all important bed was very comfortable and, coupled with the quiet surroundings allowed us both great nights sleep. Finally, breakfast was very relaxing and served yet again by friendly, talkative staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. So, would I go back ? Yes, in a heartbeat. The Wild Boar is a hotel I can certainly recommend.
Paul S — Google review
Took my daughter her for their alternative afternoon tea as she saw it online and wanted to go. Did not disappoint! The welcome was warm and personal, the staff were extremely friendly, personable and added greatly to the experience. The food was even better than expected, a very welcome twist to the generic bog standard of afternoon teas. Really has to be experienced to understand the difference. Enjoyed it so much I will be returning even if it's not for a special occasion! They also will be doing a Christmas themed afternoon tea at the appropriate time too. Sounds intriguing!

We loved our stay at the wild boar, its cosy, warm and friendly. Food is beautiful, drinks were lovely. For us personally it was expensive but it was worth it for a get away treat. Would recommend and would do again in a heartbeat.

Have only eaten here. Had the savoury afternoon tea previously which I loved. Nice location. I visited again recently and went for the steak. Quite pricey and not the biggest portions. Bought their home-made ale which is made on site as it's lovely. Lovely decor and staff were attentive.

Beautiful hotel with amazing food evening meal and breakfast were both unreal. Service is fantastic. The room we stayed in was lovely. We will definitely be back as we didn't have time to explore the estate grounds and would also like to try the afternoon tea which was recommended to us by our server for the evening meal (not sure of his name although he was South African and was really helpful and friendly, so thank you to him)
L B — Google review
Hotel is quaint, rooms are well equipped and comfortable. There are wellington boots and umbrellas you can borrow to take advantage of the countryside walk. The staff are friendly and attentive. The restaurant offers a good selection of locally sourced ingredients. The food is very good albeit quite rich. The breakfast offers a good selection of pastries, fruit and yogurt, I would highly recommend their fruit loaf. The choice of hot foods is good, the omelette was lovely and the Wild Boar breakfast was plentiful, although the black pudding and bacon were reheated and therefore a bit dry. There are a lot of stairs in this hotel so maybe not so good if you have reduced mobility.
Angela M — Google review
We enjoyed the alternative afternoon tea so much last year that we made a return visit this week. However, this was a totally different experience and very disappointing. The service was poor. The food was overcooked, query re-heated? Can't believe that pork crackling is served as part of it, cheap and nasty. The scone was tiny but very tasty, and the other desserts were very good. On reflection i should have addressed this at the time, but as we were celebrating an occasion it didnt feel appropriate.
Carol G — Google review
We stayed for the for the weekend to celebrate my partners birthday. We usually stay at Low Wood Bay but thought we’d give this a try. The hotel itself is full of character, with its low ceilings, twists and turns and rich history! We were happy to receive a free bottle Prosecco in the room however it was warm and very cheap - not drinkable, and on top of that not even anywhere to set down the glasses! The room was smaller and less equipped / lower spec than we’re used to, the bathroom being extremely small also meant there were very few places to put things other than the floor! The shower was great though! Friday nights meal in the Grill & Smokehouse was a disappointing quality and we both left our steaks unfinished. The service was fabulous though and this needs highlighting. Breakfast however was an all round great experience with plenty of choice from both the buffet and the hot menu. We very much enjoyed the start of the day. The bar is cosy and warm in the evening, maybe would be a little more relaxing with softer lighting, it was very bright! All in all a nice place to stay but it’s pitched as a 5 star which it definitely isn’t. We liked its location but would be unlikely to return as we prefer a more luxurious room.

The Lily Bar is a cozy spot offering British cuisine, cask ales, and live entertainment in a comfortable setting. After reopening post-lockdown, the service, atmosphere, and food have all been top-notch. The menu features classic favorites and even includes celebrity guest cardboard cutouts for added fun. The staff works hard to ensure guests are well taken care of despite the shortage of restaurant workers in town.
Words are inadequate. Gareth gave us friendly and excellent service. He made us feel completely welcome and poured a perfect pint. The chef is a genius, and the atmosphere is lovely. The fish cakes from the bargain early bird menu are perfectly seasoned all fish; no fillers except the perfectly crispy crust. The mussels and caper sauce divine. My husband had the cheeseburger and charcuterie also from the early bird menu and said it was delicious. We've been traveling around the UK for 6 weeks and this is the best meal we have had so far.

We were a party of 4 staying at the National Trust campsite next door. We thought we'd try here for dinner and it was really wonderful. The food was really delicious - an imaginative menu, and all the meals we had were superb. I'm a vegetarian and it's fairly rare that I get something which feels like a treat, but this was exactly that. The meat eaters had lamb or chicken and loved their meals. The staff were friendly and attentive - it was a little busy but they still looked after us well, and the food came in good time, as you would hope when it's freshly cooked to order. I'd highly recommend this for dinner. I haven't left many restaurant reviews, but really thought they deserved this. Would definitely go again if we're anywhere in reach.

Called in for a Sunday roast and it was great. The beef was very tasty (slices of Rib Eye) and the veg was good. The 3 sides for £10 was good value too and decent portion sizes for sides with enough to share between 4 of us. The inn itself is beautifully appointed—elegant yet cosy, with thoughtful touches that made us feel right at home. The highlight, of course, was the Michelin-starred dining experience. Every course was a masterpiece, perfectly balancing creativity and flavour with the finest local ingredients. The wine pairings were expertly chosen and elevated each dish even further. Breakfast the next morning continued to impress, with fresh, high-quality offerings that were absolutely delicious. That granola OMG. We left feeling completely looked after and already planning our next visit. Pentonbridge Inn is a true gem, combining luxury, comfort, and world-class cuisine. Highly recommended!

We came over to Gretna for a family wedding but decided to come up a day early. As we had an extra night we wanted to enjoy some time together and Pentonbridge Inn was only a short drive away! From entry to exit the staff were super attentive, ensuring we were enjoying the experience at every moment. The tasting menu was incredible! Having done a couple at other Michelin star restaurant, I can confirm some of these dishes were just above and beyond! The savoury custard and fresh peas, just not what you'd expect but absolutely delicious! Really pleasant experience and would highly recommend ✨

The Pentonbridge Inn is not short of excellent reviews. why, because it is excellent. From the moment you are greeted at reception to the moment you leave the premises it oozes class. The staff, the service and the rooms are exceptionally good, combine that with wonderful food and you cannot fail to be impressed. Our stay was probably the best hotel stopover I can recall in many years. Well done to all the team at Pentonbridge Inn.

Our dinner was close to perfection - all the staff were kind, professional and knowledgable (made us laugh too, at times) and the cooking was absolutely outstanding. After a few disappointing 'top-end' dining experiences lately, our visit restored our belief in the joy that cooking and food at this level can bring. Just brilliant.

Such a beautiful wee inn! From arrival to departure was excellent! The little snacks on your bedside table and the offer of fresh milk for the room were just the start. The staff had in-depth knowledge of the dishes and wine menu so that helped if you didn’t want to have the wine flight! Breakfast was great also with great views over the rolling hills. Thank you to everyone who was on shift last Saturday! Dean

Fabulous place if you enjoy fine dining. The 8 course tasting menu with wine flight was sensational.

The taster menu is a beautiful and tantalising dining experience. Staff were attentive and informative about the produce and food preparation. A lovely atmosphere. Also, the speed at which the dishes came to the table was perfect. Not rushed, but neither too slow; just right. I didn't stay. Therefore, I can not comment in the rooms.

The Eagles Head is a charming and cozy pub located in Satterthwaite, offering excellent food with a variety of vegetarian options. The atmosphere is welcoming to everyone, including families, dogs, and walkers. The pub features live music at times and has a small car park. Visitors can enjoy delicious pizza, beef lasagne, quality beers, and a great Sunday roast. It's dog-friendly both inside the pub and in the outdoor space.
Found this lovely pub purely by accident. Lovely views from the beer garden they have and a nice pint. The staff were very attentive and courteous. Will definitely give it another visit.

Lovely local pub, nice inside and friendly staff. On the road but with a small car park. Small beer garden also. Food was nice, but room for improvement. Not really worth £18 per main and £10 per child in my opinion. The pub dog is very friendly and likes to roam free. Great if you love dogs but not so much if you don’t.

Delicious pizza and lovely atmosphere - the perfect ending to a long hike in Grizedale Forest! Very grateful the chef rustled up some food after the kitchen had closed for us, I will definitely come back (but a little earlier next time!)

Two great evenings spent in the pub while camping near by. Service was excellent. Very attentive and efficient. Spilt a pint, and another one arrived soon after to replace it. Inside was fully booked, space was made for us outside under an electric heater. Food wise, pizza was okay, burger satisfactory….. but as mentioned in lots of other reviews the steak pie was exceptional! Would definitely recommend it as a venue to spend an evening while staying near by. Top marks!

A lovely place to start / finish a walk. After a long day out in the hills the Eagles Head was the perfect finish to a great day. Great food, lovely location and great choice of beers Plenty of outdoor space and very dog friendly. Staff were great.

We stopped over at this pub after a long walk, and it was a treat. The pub has a very homely atmosphere, nice people around, and the food (I was sceptical at first) was very nice indeed. Had a curry over there with couple of beers and I couldn't be happier. The beer selection is also good if you are in the area, drop by.

Can’t comment on the rooms as we didn’t stay here but it looked popular with others. Food is amazing, all prepared fresh on site, but be warned portions are HUGE!! Good beers, really friendly staff & a great selection of whiskey 👌🏻 Unique motor & aviation memorabilia throughout which is great to look at & they cater for car club meets if that’s your thing ☺️

Needed a halfway stop off and was recommended this pub. Both had lamb and it was amazing, as was all the food we saw coming from the kitchen. Staff are lovely, loved the quirky car memorabilia and yes it's an old fashioned British pub whats not to love?!

Fantastic old county inn. Wonderful location, great food and allergy aware. Staff were brilliant. This one is a great find. About 9 miles from the M6 but you have would never know. Surrounded by fields of sheep and the hills of the Yorkshire dales.

On holiday in area and did a circular walk from Ravenstonedale taking in the Fat lamb Inn as a halfway lunch stop. Real quirky place inside with car related items everywhere but very interesting. Staff all very friendly and well behaved dogs allowed inside. The sandwiches we had for lunch were the best we have ever had, so much filling , really delicious 😋 I had a prawn one and couldn't eat it all so they kindly wrapped it in foil and put in box for us to take with us, so can't recommend this place enough. The other food coming out looked really good also and very sensible prices. Our only complaint was we weren't staying close enough to go and enjoy an evening meal or two. Highly recommend.

Went in for a pint and some food after a walk. The pints of Wainwright Gold were superb and the food was really good (Fish and chips and Scampi and Chips), and the Pickled onion rings were excellent. All helped along by excellent service from the staff. Well worth a visit....

I don't know if the landlord had been sucking on sour lemons or he just acts like that. But certainly not a good welcome. The bar lady redeemed things and added two stars to this review. The pub had a splendid range of beer as it always used to when I used to drink in here ten years ago. Unfortunately it doesn't look or smell as though the toilets have received much attention in the intervening years.

The categories above pretty much cover it. The rooms were spotless. Did take advantage of their free pint if you forgo room cleaning while you stay. Great idea! You can still get clean towels and coffee etc if you need them. Staff in the bar area all very pleasant eager to assist. Sure, this was not the cheapest hotel I've stayed in, bar prices included, but it was perfectly lovely.

Just had a fantastic 5 night stay at the Coniston Inn. The hotel is situated in lovely grounds right next to Coniston Water, the hotel is absolutely gorgeous, the rooms are to a very high standard, the restaurant serves lovely food and the staff are really friendly and nothing was any trouble for them. The hotel is extremely dog friendly, has good wi-fi access and I thought it was great that the room had a smart TV on which I could access my streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix. I would highly recommend this hotel and will certainly be visiting again.

Just returned from a Walk inn break. A lovely, well managed hotel. The staff were great, nothing too much bother. Stunning location, right next to the lake, and a pleasant, half mile walk into the centre of Coniston. Very well kept grounds and very clean. A large free car park was a bonus for the lakes. The best Inn collection hotel we have stayed at so far. Very dog friendly which is a must for us.

We stayed at The Coniston Inn for 4 nights and overall had a pleasant time, though there were a few things that could’ve been better. The location is lovely and peaceful, with beautiful views from the garden and plenty of places to explore nearby. Parking was never an issue, and the room facilities were generally good. Food wise, it was a bit hit and miss. Some meals were cooked perfectly, while others (especially the veg and chips) were a little underdone. Desserts, however, were absolutely superb, and the breakfast selection and quality were genuinely impressive. That said, the food did feel a little overpriced for what it was. Our room had an extra large double bed, but it was actually two singles pushed together, which made the middle quite uncomfortable especially if you like a morning cuddle! The toilet didn’t flush properly most of the time, and the shower pressure was very weak, which was a shame. WiFi was decent, and the staff ranged from really lovely to just okay depending on who you got. Not a bad stay by any means, but with a few tweaks it could have been much better

We were a booking of 12 adults, a kid of 10 and 7 dogs. The staff were great, friendly and attentive. I've knocked one star off due to my pheasant being overcooked and very dry in places. I'd like to give 4½ stars but only full stars are allowed and it wasn't perfect. Everything else was good.

Went here for a dinner randomly and we had a really good time. Can get busy ,booking a table is recommended ,although we didnt book, but had no problem of finding a table even at quite busy evening. We waited around an hour for our food, which was explained at the order .It was busy so understandable and we happily waited while sipping our drinks. Food can be pricey, but was really delicious. We just had burgers and not sure i would pay this much for a burger again ,but with saying that beef was fresh , very tasty and definitely higher grade produce .No regrets ! Drinks are reasonably priced and we had a good few. Atmosphere was nice despite busy place.Staff was all polite and friendly, especialy our young Asian server who was managing most of the tables alone.Very kind and profesional ,would go beyond to make you satisfied !!! Location is great with good beer garden. Next time we will come over for a breakfast ;) Thank You ☆☆☆☆☆

Stopped at The White Lion Hotel in Ambleside for lunch whilst visiting the town. Specifically wanted somewhere with outside seating due to us having our dog with us. Ordered drinks at the bar and then my partner ordered food from the menu available. My partner opted for the fish goujons sandwich and I opted for the ham and cheese melt sandwich. The first issue was when the waiter approached our table approximately 15 minutes after ordering to advise that they had run out of tartar sauce for the fish and would mayonnaise suffice. We were happy with that. After a further 10 minutes, he appeared again to say that they only had one piece of focaccia bread left and would plain white bread be okay for the ham and cheese melt sandwich. We agreed to this because we were keen to get the food. The order finally arrived after a further 10 minutes and what was put down was poor to say the least. Photos below of the food. The fish was not goujons, they were standard fish fingers. The ham and cheese melt was poor. The cheese was clearly some form of processed cheese slice which had been melted. The bread wasn’t buttered in either sandwich and the overall presentation was poor. Either the chef was off sick or they were having a bad day! Not the standard of pub food you would expect to find in a hotel based in a popular tourist location. We will certainly not be eating here again, considering the large number of other eating places with outdoor seating in Ambleside.
Stuart S — Google review
I came in for a meal with my partner and service was generally awful and his burger was burnt, they also took our starter before we had finished eating. For the prices you’re paying the food is quite bad. We asked for our food to come all together and it didn’t, I asked for the vegan options but was given dairy in my starter so when the main arrived I wanted to check with the sever, which I assume manager (as he was in a blue Hawaiian shirt) that the lasagna I ordered had vegan cheese. He then proceeded to be very patronising back to me stating that I ordered something vegan so it would be vegan and then left to go to the kitchen but shouted loud enough for us both to hear him (as we were sat directly opposite the kitchen) complaining about our table and acting as if we were stupid. This made me feel angry as my partner and I both work in a touristy pub ourselves and this kind of service and behaviour especially from a manager is unacceptable. It makes me angry as I know how difficult customers can be we both always make the effort to be friendly and polite to the staff, but we were treated unreasonably. I wanted to complain but the servers continued to dodge our table even with dirty plates on it, but that seemed to be a general theme of the pub, as there were dirty plates everywhere and it wasn’t busy. I also saw another member of staff drop half the plate of chips he was carrying to a table and proceed to do nothing about it. The whole experience put me off of my meal, though it didn’t seem that appetising anyway. The vibe overall seemed unwelcoming and unpleasant, I got the general impression that nobody really cared. It’s safe to say I wouldn’t be visiting again, and it seems there are plenty of other nicer places to eat out in Ambleside.
Google R — Google review
Phenomenal, most pubs and hotels can only dream of presenting a traveler with such comfort and taste when it comes to evening dining. After being turned away from several other eateries, our final resting place for the eve was The White Lion Hotel, where both myself and my colleagues who had been hiking for charity found ourselves stunned by its inner beauty. Throughout our visit the most lovely server/floor staff Isla helped us through the order taking process and provided opinions and suggestions as to what we should have for dinner, her choice was superb, Isla brought a warmth to our hearts with her sweet, smiley and frankly sensational service. I would not have wanted to be served by anyone else, in the world. We ordered three of their favorite dishes being the maple double bacon burger with some wow factor garlic and striking salt and pepper chicken. A fiery meal with oodles of flavor, better than mum cooked as a kid, If you’re not dining at the white lion hotel, are you dining at all? Must go, don’t skip, you’re missing out otherwise.

Stayed here for a long weekend to do some hiking and loved it. We stayed in a self catering room which was lovely however really quite dated, and we had a problem with some stagnant water in a draw under the oven which the oven trays were stored, however the staff were quick to solve this problem and gave us a free drink each! Views and area is absolutely stunning and perfect for a getaway for hiking!

We've eaten here a few times now and had mixed experiences. In February we had a really nice meal so we returned this week expecting the same. As we were in the area for four days we ended up eating here for three. One meal was good. The other two were not great for the price. The pies lacked seasoning and were not home made. At times the chips appeared to have been sat for a while and then reheated, at other times they were good. 2/3 times the gravy was thin and tasteless. It seems that the food is not made fresh/ on site. It's a shame because the atmosphere and the service were great, the staff were very friendly and the area is beautiful.

We dropped by Wasdale Head Inn just for a few pints, and even with the rain pouring down, it was something special. The grey skies and steady drizzle only made the landscape feel more dramatic — raw, moody, and absolutely stunning. The pub had a warm, welcoming feel, perfect for drying off and relaxing. A proper pint in a place like that hits different. It felt like stepping into a postcard from old England — misty mountains, stone walls, and a pint in hand. We didn’t need sunshine to enjoy it — the rain added to the charm. Would absolutely go again.

We arrived at this beautiful location by mistake. We were not planning on staying in our motorhome in this location but so glad we did for 2 nights. All the staff were wonderful, so helpful and made us fill so welcome. We attempted the walk up scafell pike which we hadn't planned either. British restaurant
Restaurant
Nestled just six miles north of Bedford, The Plough Inn in Bolnhurst is a delightful blend of traditional charm and modern sophistication. Owned by Martin and Jayne Lee, this updated pub features cozy wood-burning stoves and offers a contemporary British menu that puts a creative spin on classic dishes. Guests can indulge in starters like white onion soup with smoked ham hock or savor mains such as roast Devon partridge paired with rosti potatoes and braised savoy cabbage.
Lovely place on the edge of the south lakes area. Really nice comfortable decor and bright open restaurant. Greeted on entry and the hostess was lovely. Service was quick, friendly and we had everything we needed. The drinks were nice and a great range for everyone. Food was delicious, fresh and hot, standard waiting times even though it was busy and we weren't rushed at all. Big car park so plenty of room. Would definitely recommend a visit with the family or for a special meal.

We went here for lunch on Sunday, the food and service was absolutely amazing, it's one of the best roast dinners I have ever had. The service was outstanding, the restaurant was clean, well kept and nicely decorated. The deserts were fantastic as well. We will definitely revisit here if we are up that way again.

Spot on service and a proper warm welcome. Only popped in for a pint and to meet a friend, but was really impressed. The pint was lovely, and the service was absolutely spot on. We were asked to take a seat while it settled, and the barman even asked if we’d like some water for the dog – nice touch. The interior is gorgeous, really nicely done, and there’s a big car park too which makes things easy. Staff were friendly, funny, and made us feel properly welcome. Will definitely be back – great first visit.

A lovely pub, nice staff. Unfortunately I got food poisoning after visiting here on our way home from a weekend away. I would not recommend the loaded fries. The chips were of poor quality and clearly were not prepared correctly for me to walk away unwell! My partner’s meal was fine (sausage and mash) but the portion was small.

Stayed overnight with my partner and 1 year old, to split up a North-South journey. Great family room, and really helpful staff on arrival. Evening meal and beer were delicious, and breakfast the same. Will be staying again in the future as so well located for the M6.

Stayed at the Plough Inn for one night and absolutely loved it. We stayed in the Deluxe Kings Sweet which was gorgeous! We felt like royalty. The room has a record player featuring lots of classics such as Paul Simon’s Graceland (our favorite). Our evening meal was delicious! Staff were very friendly and made us feel really welcome. Although the pub is on a main road we could barely hear any cars and had a lovely nights sleep. Can’t recommend a stay here enough!

We were looking for a lovely pub for a party of 12 to celebrate a special birthday and this place was recommended. Must say, first impression was great, Linda took the call and was so helpful (unlike another pub not far away). The day arrived and the welcome, the service and the food was absolutely excellent. Would happily recommend this place to anybody who would like to experience old fashioned great customer service and excellent food at a more than reasonable price. Well done and thank you ever so much

Went for a meal here and had such an awful experience to the point we left before the food was served. I was spoken to in such a disrespectful manner by the waiter that customers around us also said how unprofessional and uncomfortable it made them. I took a phone call, quietly, off a family member and was told I need to end the phone call as customers weren’t allowed on there phones in the restaurant despite others being on there and children playing loudly around us So disappointed as we have been here before but we will not return to this establishment again

Inn on the Square is a vibrant hotel located in the heart of Keswick, offering a range of amenities for its guests. The Brossen Steakhouse, which has received an AA rosette for its high-quality food, serves a seasonal menu featuring a variety of grill items and an extensive wine selection in a contemporary dining room.
We booked a table for 4 to have Sunday lunch. A friendly welcome, and shown straight to our table. Drinks and wine list arrived within a couple of minutes and having made our lunch decisions, drinks were ordered and delivered in a couple of minutes. Our food (all four plumped for the Cumbrian beef roast) was on the table promptly. The beef was superb, cooked medium rare with lovely roast vegetables and potatoes, all in a really tasty gravy. We followed with a variety of well presented and tasty desserts. Nice ambiance, very polite and efficient staff. We would happily return to the Inn the next time we're in Keswick, great food and nice atmosphere 👌

This is a very well located hotel if you are planning to stay in Keswick. It is a 10-15 minute walk to Derwentwater lake and the Keswick Launch area where you can buy tickets to go to the Catbell hiking trail. The hotel is right in the city area. The Thursday and Saturday market is right outside the entrance of the hotel and is a good place to get souvenirs. Walkable to several stores right outside the hotel which includes boots, cafes, a pizza place and several outdoor hiking stores. The rooms are cozy and clean with a nice shower. Though note the rooms can get a tad bit warm at times. There is no fridge in the rooms. The TVs are also a bit older with no apple play or screen-share options. So bring a HDMI cable if you need to watch anything that needs streaming. The elevators were not working on the day that we came (we did get an email notification about this prior). We did get a room on the 1st/2nd floor that made the stairs bearable! Friendly staff. Paid hotel parking available. Just make sure to book the hotel parking before hand. There are some parking areas right behind the hotel which is another option that can be considered. Would definitely consider this hotel if I am ever visiting Keswick again.

Stumbled across this this evening when looking for somewhere for dinner. 2 adults and a 3 year old. Very friendly staff who couldn't do more to help. Food was delicious and service was fantastic. (Despite apologising that service may be slightly slower due to a large party) but was as quick as, or even quicker than other restaurants in the area. Would highly recommend and will be back again on our next trip

We ate at the restaurant and ordered the Chateaubriand steak for two. It delivered on all levels. Soft tender steak with enough accompaniements to leave very satisfied. Thank you, it hit the spot. Charlotte looked after us and she made it extra special. Thank you, we will come again.

Recently stayed here in room 211. Fantastic location and the views were stunning. Breakfast was spot on too. Would give 5 stars all day, but the rooms were hotter than the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl! It was absolutely roasting, there was a thermostat in the room that was not wired in?!?

What a wonderful suprise to discover this hotel! Best possible location, friendly staff & modern design. A special shout out to the duty manager, Alande, who made our stay so special, who looked after us and made us feel at home. We found it difficult to leave. But we will definitely return!
