Nestled behind the port of Nice, Chez Pipo is a beloved local gem that has been delighting visitors since 1923. This charming eatery exudes a rustic ambiance and specializes in socca, the traditional chickpea pancake that has become synonymous with the region. While many spots in Old Town offer this delicacy, Chez Pipo stands out for its expertly crafted version, cooked to perfection in a wood-fired oven.
Great authentic Nicoise fare here at Chez Pipo! A terrific, tapas style menu, brings you the best portions of delightful local fare. Given the modest prices and fair portion sizes, it's easy to select 3 or 4 dishes to accompany your choice of wine, beer, and spirits without busting your waistline or your wallet. I arrived around 6:30 to a few empty tables, but it filled up fast after that. The staff moved quickly to seat guests but you never feel rushed to finish and leave. This is a terrific spot to taste Nice, located in the old city. A delight to walk to, and just a few streets from the port, which makes for a lovely walk afterwards. Don't miss Chez Pipo!

Wow wow wow this place is amazing I first got recomended this restaurant by a tour-guide when I asked for places that made genuinely good local food. So I went there, got seated. The server noticed that I struggled with french so he switched to english. I said I wanted to practice my French so he not only switched back but even helped me with some words. The first time I was here i ordered the following: Tartinades (Tapenades Verte & Noire) Socca anchois With a aperol spritz as a drink And for desert a lemon marangue pie with a glass of niçois rum as a digestif. This meal was so good, and the staff so nice that despite me saying that I try a new place each night I during my stay, went here twice. So I went again and the meal was just as if not more terrific. This time, and what I'll be showing photos of, I ordered: Tartinades (Thoïonade - Anchoïade) Pissaladière Socca anchois (because i couldn't get enough of it) And a Panaché to drink And for desert I had: Tourte de Blettes And glass of niçois rum as a digestif All of the flavors work so well together, the food was obviously made to order and was super fresh, and the best part is that it really wasn't expensive for what you got. and the staff (once again) was super kind and even remembered me:P When I come back here, I'll visit Chez pipo. When my friends say that they're going to nice, I'll recomend them Chez pipo. I love this Chez pipo🫶🫶 Edit: i unknowingly went a third time because I went on a food tour:) Not complaining, I couldn't have wished for a better end to my trip to nice. Au revoir and see you lovely people next year:))

We’d heard so much about this restaurant and its famous specialty that we were happy to wait in line for a table. Unfortunately, the food didn’t quite live up to the hype. I’m sure socca can be a wonderful traditional dish, but what we tried that night just wasn’t that good — and the classic one we ordered was a bit burned. Service was fine and prices are reasonable, though the menu felt quite limited. Overall, an okay experience but not quite worth the buzz for us.
Georgia P — Google review
Food was really good, we enjoyed it very much. But the wait for food for 40 mins plus was gruelling. We had to remind the waiter twice and even then only one of the items arrived. I guess the waiter completely forgot about our order. The stools in the restaurant is also slightly small which made the wait even more uncomfortable.
Arun S — Google review
A popular place for Socca. Long Q to get a table. Service was not so friendly..I guess bcos it was busy. Overall food was not bad.
Valerie N — Google review
We had an excellent meal the socca was delicious. We tried normal, parmigiano and ansjovis. All were tasty but the ansjovis was our favourite. The whole experience was made even better by the fantastic service provided by our waiter Mario. He was very friendly and we heard him effortlessly switch between several languages with different guests (he speaks 6). Mario gave same good advice on dessert as well. He suggested i try the mystere which was indeed delicious. Highly recommend this place!
Martijn K — Google review
We literally ate here 3 evenings od our 1 week Nice stay. Socca was the best thing I ate during our stay and this is the oldest and best place to eat it. I liked the original one but parmesan and red pepper one was also great. There is always a queue in front to be seated but we never waited more than 15 mins. The lady to show us our places is very kind and friendly. The prices of the dishes are low comparing it to other restaurants in Nice. You won’t be disappointed to try, fully recommended.
Gunsu K — Google review
We came here on our last night of the trip & wished we had come sooner. When you read all the reviews that say this place is a must & a local gem, I couldn't agree more. It was my first time trying something like this & I loved it. Filling yet not too much & delicious flavours. I got the anchovy one & my friend got the parmigiana, really enjoyed the anchovy one personally. We also got the tartinade with the olives & it was good. Total we paid less than 25 euros

Lou Pilha Leva, a beloved establishment in Nice, is renowned for its delicious socca and mouthwatering moules frites. Nestled at Place Centrale, this casual eatery invites you to savor a generous bowl of fresh mussels served in a delightful saffron cream sauce while enjoying the sunny ambiance at outdoor picnic benches. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, making it easy to mingle with locals as you indulge in your meal.
I went here in March 2023. I love their salade niçoise, but the portion is kinda big for one person. It is more suitable for 2 people. The seating is limited, but still a good experience for me.
Adriana A — Google review
Good spot in the Old Town to try socca with a drink. Lively atmosphere, especially in the evenings. It is loud, a bit chaotic, and exactly where you want to be if you’re in the mood for socca with a side of people-watching. Order it hot, sprinkle some pepper— and suddenly life feels simple and good. Recommended 👌
Lida P — Google review
A corner eatery in the Garibaldi - Old Town area that offers quick and efficient service by offering plated (literally plated) dishes. Offers cash and card. So ideal for a quick bite and move on with your travels. It has limited yet open-air bench seating and is generally moderately crowded. The cashier-cum-server was mildly rude when asked for a fork and knife for my Socca. Maybe it's a cultural thing or that I don't speak the same language, but that's okay. The food was warm and tasty.
Debajyoti A — Google review
**Lou Pilha Leva – Nice** I really loved this place. The **staff is friendly and welcoming**, which is impressive given how busy and touristy the area can get. The **socca with a cold beer** is a perfect match — simple, authentic, and delicious. As a Uruguayan, I couldn’t help but notice how similar socca is to our **fainá**, a chickpea flour flatbread brought by Italian immigrants to Uruguay. That connection made the experience even more special. A great spot to stop for lunch before continuing your walk or heading back to the beach. Highly recommend for a true taste of Nice!
Gustavo I — Google review
Great spot! I really liked the concept of having all the classic local dishes under one roof (more restaurants should follow the example). I tried the Socca and Pissaladière—both delicious. The Socca reminded me of fainá back home in Argentina, the perfect pizza companion. Staff were super friendly and fast, and the prices are very fair. The outdoor seating was quite convenient (there’s indoor seating too). Cash and card accepted. I’ll definitely be back to try more!
Lucas K — Google review
Went here twice for lunch over my 4 days in Nice. Very tasty food, everything was great! Had the tarte du blette salee, the fried zuccini flowers and also the mussels. All yum. Would have liked a spoon for the mussels so could get more of the sauce. Nice enough staff, long line but always moving.
Sarah W — Google review
I was walking by here and saw a sign for Socca for 3 Euros so I decided to give it a try. First time trying it and not sure if im the biggest fan yet. It was a bit dry but I’ve never had other Socca yet to compare. Overall the vibe of the restaurant was awesome, the service was very quick, and the experience felt very authentic. If you’re interested in trying Socca this is a cool place to try it out
Waleed M — Google review
Nice, quiet, and authentic spot. We tried the traditional socca. I wasn’t the biggest fan, but it’s definitely something worth trying at least once, especially if it’s your first time here.

Restaurant
Fast food restaurant
Chez Thérésa is a renowned establishment in Nice, France, with a rich history dating back to 1925. The venue is famous for its traditional socca, cooked in a wood-fired oven from 1867. Visitors can experience the authentic preparation of this local staple at the no-frills restaurant on rue Droite or by visiting their stall at the Cours Saleya markets.
Socca, socca, socca, one of the most sought after treats of Nice France. Chez Theresa did not disappoint. The picture does this tasty treat, no justice. It was indeed delightful and packed full of favor. Socca is basically a pancake or crepe made of out chick pea flour. Let me be the first to tell you that if you are ever in Nice, France, you have to at least try Socca. It is a nice snack for walking around or sitting and having a drink with it. It was a well seasoned, non-sweet treat that will easily par well with an aperol spiritz of espresso martini. Ever bite was flavorful. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this dish actually was. The line at the actual restaurant was a lot shorter than their food stand at the marketplace. The restaurant Chez Theresa was about a 3 minute walk from the marketplace food stand. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Whenever I visit Nice again, I will definitely be grabbing some more Socca.
Fred S — Google review
I tried the Socca and Trouchia at Chez Thérésa and loved both. I actually just ran into this stand when I walked around the old town, so it was a surprise for my trip today. The socca was freshly made. warm, crispy on the edges and very soft inside – simple yet so satisfying, especially with a dash of black pepper. It’s my first time having it and I was amazed! The portion is large. €3 The trouchia (Swiss chard omelet) was flavorful, moist, and full of herbs – very traditional and comforting. I hope I can get a freshly made one though, but serving as cold also good. €3.5
Xiyun L — Google review
Amazing food. Their pizza and socca was amazing and price was very reasonable. It was a big lineup to order but it was worth the wait. If you are in the area, check them out.
Shabbir K — Google review
We saw a line, so we intuitively joined it... you know, it was a clear sign that the food was worth waiting for. So we ordered two socca and a trouchia. I wish we could buy more of this!! The flavor was so soft and healthy. The socca was a bit too salty at first, then we fully enjoyed it. We absolutely loved it. You can use the toilet in their restaurant (in front of the little window where you order - watch out, the toilet door has no lock), but the seats are reserved for clients who buy drinks. So, to avoid eating while standing, we walked until ‘Square Abbe Isnardi’ :)
Teresa G — Google review
The socca from Chez Thérésa is a piece of living Nice. Freshly baked in a wood oven, arriving at the market by cargo bike — it’s all part of the charm. The lady serving was kind and warm, clearly proud of what she does, and the guy on the bike handled the oven like a pro. The socca itself? Thin, crispy, full of flavour and sunshine. Simple, authentic, perfect.
Massimo P — Google review
I wanted to visit the old town and wanted to find somewhere cheap to eat, and seeing the prices in the photos (The Socca now is 3.50 EUR, but nevertheless) I decided to check it out. I arrived to see a large queue and thought 'oh man, is it really good enough to wait for?' the queue was about 20 minutes but it moved relatively quickly so the wait didn't feel too bad. The food itself - I had never heard of socca before, and I was completely blown away. I wish I had tried it earlier in my trip so I could've gone for another round. I also had a slice of the pizza which was also quite good. The socca, I swear, I'm going to dream about it. Hopefully I visit Nice again soon and if so I'd definitely be back for more. If you're a person who isn't massively adventurous with food, I'd heartily recommend trying it.
Destructiox — Google review
We got Socca and Pan Bagnat. Both were absolutely delicious ♥️ Highly recommend if you would like to have something that belongs to the region
Jaee S — Google review
Reasonably priced Nicoise street food. The Socca is the star of the show here, with its mix of crispy, soft, and salty bits. There was a bit of a queue, but it goes quickly, and there's shade to keep you sheltered from the sun. There's also a dine-in area a few steps from the shop, but make sure to buy a drink. I walked past their market location but would recommend coming here instead as the Socca is freshly baked on-site.

Bar
Chez Rene Socca is an old-school cafe located in Old Town that specializes in flat-breads made of chickpea flour, known as socca. The place is always bustling with locals and French speakers lining up to grab a plate of this local street food. Despite the chaos, the service is quick and the prices are affordable. You can enjoy your socca at sidewalk seats or take it for a late-night snack while strolling around the city.
Two of us had all these! And they are amazing! The socca, fish, chicken, they are all very tasty. They have a policy where you have to order a drink if you want to have a seat. We were standing eating and it was not bad at all. Strongly recommended.
Hooi ( — Google review
Decent place for affordable food. I liked the socca, but the pan bagnat was rather bland (it’s really big, however). The service was very friendly even when the place got super busy. Card payments are accepted for purchases of €10 or more. Must order drinks to dine in.
Eki R — Google review
Stopped by for drinks and had a great, relaxed time. The place wasn’t too busy, which made it easy to get served and enjoy the atmosphere. The drinks were affordable, and overall it’s a nice spot to unwind, especially if you’re looking for something low-key.
Ruben A — Google review
We went to this place to eat the most hyped French snack socca And we realised that’s similar like our own “Indian cheela” It was just made with chickpea flour, water and oil. No added salt or vegetables how we have in India. Overall a great place to visit and enjoy.
Ankur V — Google review
joined a long queue at saturday 1pm and had to wait over 30 minutes for food. slightly overhyped, food was very oily. we really liked the aubergine and the stuffed vegetables. the sardine was quite fishy, and socca tasted burnt.
Aly — Google review
Sadly, we didn’t have a good experience here. The food was nothing special and tasted overly oily, without much flavor. The service was awful—a man came around to take drink orders, but he only reached our table near the end of our meal. The atmosphere was also unpleasant, with pigeons flying overhead and landing on tables. We had much better experiences at other restaurants in Nice.
André J — Google review
Great place to try Socca when in Nice. You have to queue up at the counters to order. The queue goes round the corner past two counters. If you sit inside you have to order a drink (table service). A bit confusing for the first time visitor, but still worth a visit.
Ryan W — Google review
I have been going there since I was a little kid. It’ll never get boring and the waiting line will be longer each time! What started as a little hole in a wall takes now a full corner. Enjoy Socca in situ or take away, if you decide to eat it there please accompany it with a glass of local wine preferably rosé and don’t forget to add lots of pepper, and brag you ate Socca like a local! How to know it was good?? Cooked on the edges and olive oil moist in the center. Bon appétit!!

Socca is a traditional specialty from Nice, a hot and peppery flatbread made of chickpea flour and olive oil. It can be enjoyed plain or with a sprinkle of pepper. One popular spot to savor authentic socca is at Chez Pipo, a restaurant near the port of Nice that has been serving this dish since the 1920s.
Portions are very large and the food is amazing. Service is top notch, customer oriented, polite and friendly. The waitress Vivian explained the different dishes to us in perfect English. Next time we come to Nice we will eat here again for sure. Thank you very much.
Daniel A — Google review
Budget place to eat. Very reasonable prices versus size of portions. Be aware - portions are really big. I mean it. One portion easy could feed 2 persons. Like that - it is cheap place to eat. Food quality is average, but good enough. Don’t be picky and level expectations to whatever you pay for.
Dimo D — Google review
A Fun Local Experience, But Not Our Taste We were excited to try Socca while in Nice since it’s such a popular local dish—and clearly, many people love it, as the place stayed busy all day. That said, it just wasn’t for us. The chickpea pancake (socca) was dry and didn’t have much flavor, and the zucchini fritters were so greasy that we couldn’t finish them. Still, we’re glad we gave it a shot—it’s always fun to experience the local buzz and try regional specialties. While we didn’t love the food, we can see why it’s a hit with others. If you’re in Nice and curious, it’s worth trying at least once… just maybe not something we’d go back for.

I just ate at this place in spite of the fact that there were no reviews and an more than happy to give them their first review. The socca sold here is around the standard price for a portion - €3. I've had socca here, in Carrefour and in Chez Pipo and this was actually the tastiest one I've found. I know there are many places here that sell Socca, so there may be some places that make it better, but I was pleasantly surprised. I had Le Menu Breton (The Brittany Menu), which gave a portion of Socca, a Galette (gluten free, savoury pancake made from buckwheat) and a glass of rosé wine/cider for €14. It also came with some pretzels and small savoury biscuit-type nibbles, which weren't advertised. I was surprised at how full I was by the time I was half way through the galette. I actually had to get my wife, who didn't intend to eat, to help me finish! To top it all off, the staff were really helpful, spoke good English and were aware of the ingredients in their food - something that isn't as common as you would think in French restaurants/cafés. I'll definitely find this place to eat again!
Matthew S — Google review
Horrible, horrible place! The restaurant itself looks bad, the food is awful. When we were there the manager was shouting on the new waitress all the time even though she was doing everything correctly. Because of the manager we were given wrong, more expensive thing (didn't want to say anything because of the poor girl). At the end the manager charged us twice for one thing and when we told her it's a mistake, she said WA ARE LYING!!! Places like this shouldn't exist!
Anna P — Google review
Food was totally OK and reasonably priced. We had no problems with the service, quite the opposite actually.

Socca was great. We split one portion and got a Marguerite pizza. Very affordable! Wait staff was friendly and helpful. Note that the restaurant is split in two: a takeout-side and a dine-in side. We came at opening so didn't experience a line but it looked like it was becoming a crowd as we left.
Lambert N — Google review
We came on a Friday night so were half expecting to be turned away without a reservation but thankfully we managed to get a table inside (outside tables were fully booked) The selection of food that we ordered was all great. I’m particularly a fan of the original Socca, which was very fresh and the texture was perfect. I would definitely recommend coming here if you’re in Nice, the prices aren’t bad either.

Tried socca at a number of places in Nice, mainly in Old Town. La Socca d'Or in Riquier was very close to where we were staying and the socca much better than the other socca restaurants we tried. Would highly recommend 👌.

A very popular and enjoyable place. I fell in love with the goat cheese and tuna pizza! I ate "socca" for the first time in my life and it was delicious. Their desserts made with chard are also amazing! Great place to go again and again!
BETÜL E — Google review
Nice socca but very unfriendly waitress. She told me that i had to go to the end of the line but i was there before two other persons. I think because she recognized that i was a tourist. Maybe she thought that i was there after the other two persons but you have to talk friendly to your clients as a service worker.

Lou Pistou, located in the heart of Saint-Tropez, offers traditional Provencal and Nice dishes prepared with elegance. Chef Dominique Dumas sources his ingredients from local and organic producers at the nearby Cours Saleya market. The restaurant is known for its relaxed and homely atmosphere, offering a menu that changes regularly to incorporate fresh ingredients.
I was so happy to go with my friends to this restaurant for lunch. The decor and atmosphere are typically French. The waiter is kind and explained the menu for us in English. The chef cooked his dishes with a smile on his face. We enjoyed the food very much and will come back for sure.

You have to come here if you are in Nice. Reservations recommended for after 8. They speak English here and our waiter was lovely. Come here for some local made Nice specialty food. Small place, 22 seats. One server and one cook do it all. Get a reservation and have some patience. Great place, super friendly, translated the chalkboard menu line by line. Great food, from simple and fresh to regional and complex. Wine just ok but prices very reasonable for the food quality.

The food was amazingly delicious! If you are used to Italian pasta al dente, I guess you have to ask for it. Otherwise, you get it more cooked than al dente. The dessert with figs can be improved. The syrup was too liquid. But overall, the experience was worth it! The personnel was super gentle and nice.

Fantastic Niçoise food and attentive service, cannot fault this restaurant at all. Fresh ingredients and gorgeous flavours, you must visit this place if you're ever in Nice! Not a tourist trap at all!

Brilliant. Firstly the service was perfect, friendly relaxed and informative. The came out fairly quickly, was well presented and very enjoyable. It’s small little establishment, so booking ahead might be a good idea.
Adam S — Google review
What a delight this restaurant is! Tiny with tables crammed together and an even smaller kitchen. The food is a delight. We had sardines pressed with tomatoes, mussels, fish and sausage with lentils.... so seemingly standard Nicoise fair...but as mentioned the food is just lovely. The waiter had just the right amount of snootiness!
Madhu R — Google review
We had dinner here, we would recommend reservations as they were unable to accommodate a few walk ins while we were there, however we were able to make our reservation earlier that same day. The menu varies daily based on what they pick up at the market. We had the lentils and sausage as well as the steak stew, both were very good. The service was good. The chocolate mousse was amazing :)

Socca'Tram is a popular spot known for its high-quality and affordable local cuisine. The socca, a crispy chickpea flour pancake, is a standout dish that attracts both tourists and locals. In addition to the delicious socca, the menu features other must-try items like Farcis Nicois and Tourte de Blettes. Visitors praise the friendly staff and recommend trying out the vegan options along with some beer or wine.
My first time having Socca. It was wonderful. We had a plate of Socca, a Monaco, and a glass of wine just a little over 10 euros. The service was great and the place was full. We had to wait about five minutes for a table to open up. Other dishes that were being served look great.

A takeaway shop with seating outside selling local Artisan products from Nice. Great beer, great food and friendly staff.

They have excellent socca served fresh and warm in a cool neighborhood. The portions are big and the price is right.

I spent 3 days in Nice, and I made sure I had their delicious socca every day. I've been coming here every October since 2022 😋
T S — Google review
first time trying socca and i’m so glad it was here! was offered a fresh new batch to try and the staff even taught me the traditional way of eating it with your hands. truly wonderful experience and food with a great location to people-watch. socca was perfectly crispy on the outside, and soft and warm on the inside. definitely recommend this place for the food and service! :)

Nice little cafe that bakes good food. Tried the socca and Tourte de Blettes, both are great. The owner speaks english and is really nice and friendly. He patiently explains what is each of the food made of. Really nice experience.
Adrian W — Google review
One of the best socca I have had in Nice. They were fresh and had some good balance between crispy bites. Something to keep in mind, the service for the to-go line can take quite some time to be served.
Supraja S — Google review
Tried the sweet taurte de blettes and was not disappointed. Service is good and the coke comes with a glass with ice. There is more consistency in their socca as they uses electric oven and the pan is solid and flat.

(Translated by Google) One of the few restaurants that are really a very rare thing in Nice. I tried the lunch dish and was pleasantly surprised by the dish. This is very unusual for the Côte d'Azur. The menu is small but nice. I will definitely try something from the menu next time. When exploring the culinary delights of the South of France, make sure to indulge in Panisse, a delightful cousin of Socca. These Provencal chickpea fries come in various shapes and textures, typically featuring a crispy exterior that gives way to a soft center. During my recent visit for lunch, I was treated to perfectly cooked fish and vegetables bursting with delicate flavors. The standout dish was undoubtedly the tomatoes paired with creamy burrata—refreshingly cold and ideal for a warm day.
I normally wouldn’t write a review but this is the one i would like to share with everyone. It is lovey to get hosted by the owner for dinner and the food impressed me. Tarbot is well cooked with the sauce. I like the pumpkin soup that was served as starter as well. In Nice, you can get touristy place with even more expensive meal and fair experience, but, i would highly recommend to everyone to visit this restaurant

This hidden gem was one of the highlights of our trip! We accidentally found this place because it was close to our hotel, and we were so glad to have done so. Owner / chef is such a nice man, and the food was simply delicious. It's unfussy food made with care and fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant is only open for lunch. Go visit!
Nenuca S — Google review
We ate lunch today and it was delicious. The fish and vegetables were cooked to perfection with delicate flavours. The Tomatoes and burratawere the best I ve had. The buratta was cold and creamy all very welcome on a hot day. The desserts, chocolate mousse flavoured with coconut and a fromage frais with fruit coulis were so refreshing and indeed mixed well together when we shared ! We were made most welcome by Luc who even refilled our water bottle with filtered water. We will be back when next in Nice. Thank you so much Panisse !!

Great food with local ingredients, kind Chef with smile, such an unforgettable memory.
성동윤 — Google review
Long awaited, Panisse has quickly become our local. On our dog-walking route, we observed with impatience and delight the progress over the weeks prior to its opening. Bare walls and floorboards, a jungle of electricity cables and cement dust in every nook and cranny progressively metamorphosised to reveal impressive stucco, a classy marble bar with matching tables and pretty artwork depicting “la cuisine du soleil”, the restaurant’s tagline. Little green and white rattan chairs and bistro tables on the terrace complete the tasteful décor. The bar may be small but, you ask for it, Luke has got it. Whether it be a Gin 44°N, a Limited Edition Chartreuse or a fine whisky. Not to mention his diverse selection of wines to suit every budget. And now to the food! It is entirely “fait maison”, fresh, balanced, refined, well presented, and simply delicious. The menu – skilfully concocted by Laurent, is small to facilitate the cravings of the season and the serving sizes just right. Luke is a natural host with a mission to ensure that every guest enjoys the best possible dining experience. He deserves to succeed and we look forward to many more meals in his establishment. Vive Panisse ! Vive Panisse !
