Churches & Cathedrals
Viborg Cathedral, a Romanesque-style religious structure, has been around since the 12th century and boasts two towers as well as noteworthy frescoes. It is a breathtakingly beautiful edifice that can easily rival Notre Dame in Paris. As an iconic landmark of Viborg, one of Denmark's oldest towns, it allows visitors to climb its towers for a small fee.
This cathedral is just plain magnificent. We visited it in start of June and was amazed. For a modest price (10 DKK) for an adult (children are free) you can go inside and even walk up the tower and have a great view over Viborg. I very highly recommend a visit. Wether you are religious, interested in architecture or just on an adventure you will have a great time here.

Lots of access, easy to explore, obviously beautiful, limited educational value. Didn't expect an entrance fee. For our family of 6, the value wasn't exceptional. Had more fun and learned more exploring the grounds and surrounding area using the map/guide.

A must visit if you're in Viborg. They have two crypts underground which you shouldn't miss. The art work is quite lovely but the highlights of the place are the beautiful lamps. The giant candelabra is beautiful as well

Viborg Cathedral is the cathedral of Viborg Diocese and at the same time the parish church for Viborg Cathedral Parish, which includes the northern part of central Viborg. The church was originally dedicated to Our Lady, i.e. Virgin Mary . From the beginning until 1440, a chapter of Augustinian choirmasters, i.e. a group of priests of the Augustinian Order , was attached to the church, who were tasked with carrying out the various services at the cathedral. - Wikipedia

A very nice and historical place to visit on a weekday. Peaceful and beautiful.

Quite possibly the most visually stunning cathedral I've had the pleasure of entering. Absolutely beautiful and rich in history and spiritual inspiration. Be sure to also enter their bell tower and small museum.
David D — Google review
Beautiful place. Doesn't have much less than Notre Dame in Paris. The icon of Viborg, one the oldest towns in Denmark. It's nice that they let you climb the towers. There's a 10 Dkk fee to enter, I would prefer not to pay entry for sacred and holy places.

The Skovgaard Museum in Viborg offers a glimpse into the Golden age of Danish art, featuring paintings from the 19th century. Housed in the old town hall next to Viborg Cathedral, this baroque building from 1728 is also home to frescoes by artist Joakim Skovgaard. Aivis N — Google review
The hiking around Hals Sø and Dollerup Bakker offers a truly unique and captivating experience in the heart of Denmark. The landscape feels surprisingly dramatic, with rolling hills and varied terrain that make you forget you're in such a relatively flat country. The views, especially from Dollerup Bakker overlooking Hals Sø, are simply stunning and provide fantastic photo opportunities. The trails themselves offer a good mix, with some more challenging and others more leisurely, ensuring there's something for various fitness levels. Be prepared for potentially muddy sections, especially on the eastern side of Hals Sø. The area is rich in natural beauty and feels quite untouched, offering a peaceful escape. You might encounter grazing animals, adding to the rural charm. Don't miss the ice cream shop at Dollerup for a refreshing treat with an incredible view! Overall, it's a highly recommended area for a memorable hike.

(Translated by Google) Viborg Kunsthal is located in beautiful premises. The exhibition changes every few months. We were inside to see the developments Jagten and Dvale. Both hard-to-reach exhibitions. The hunt seemed disjointed and fragmented, which is probably due to the fact that it was the work of several artists. Dvale fit in very well in the premises of Viborg Kunsthal. All in all a nice experience. (Original) Viborg Kunsthal er beliggende i flotte lokaler. Udstillingen skifter med et par måneders mellemrum. Museum
Mønsted Kalkgruber, located just outside Viborg, Denmark, is renowned as the world's largest limestone mine. Visitors can explore a vast labyrinth of underground passages, caves, and narrow tunnels that stretch for 60 km. Guided and self-guided tours offer insights into the mine's history and geology while showcasing impressive hand-made works. The site also features a small history museum and is home to bats in winter.
Here you can spend a nice day with your whole family. You can bring your own food and enjoy the area. The museum is very nice as the mines. Many free guided tours throughout the day. Of course there is a gift shop and an café where you can buy some ice cream food and so on. Bring your flashlight to explore hidden places in the mine.
Mr. P — Google review
No guide available but speaking only Danish. Which makes it a very expensive, un inspiring visit.. No idea what you are looking at our where to go in the mine. Best signage is to show you how far you are from the exit... Wont recommend the dtour to get here and have a Danish focused guide and very limited info only. Whilst is a regular Sunday where one can expect proper !International! tourist guidance.
Vincent V — Google review
This place is a good visit if you would like to see an old lime(stone) (cave) mine and should be the main reason you are checking out this place. There are wheelchair accessible parking lots and so is this place including the caves. Please keep in mind you are *not* able to buy tickets one hour before closing time. You are walking through a massive natural environment filled with (huge) hills, trees, hiking area, picnic table area to rest and eventually see the caves. Please don't bring any (strong) light source with you as it "could" disturb the bats (haven't seen any). The caves are filled with a walking path and it's lit up with little light sources. It could be chilly down here and it's also depending when you are going and there is no network. (I went in springtime). The caves are enormous but you don't gain much knowledge out of things but are still impressive to experience. There are signboards with maps and tons of exit signs but you can't really get lost in here. There are a few other buildings outside the cave but I didn't have enough time to check them out. Definitely worth a visit here! Disclaimer: The video is just for entertainment reasons. I was not lost and you are not able to get lost in here.
Crafo — Google review
Very nice experience! The inside of the limestone mine, is down to 8 degrees, so I recommend pants and longsleeve shirt. Most of the mine is paths with far to the ceiling. There's however some very small and narrow passages, which is exciting and creepy! I recommend to bring a flashlight, so you can really see into the delves! There's an exhibition which shows how they get the limestone and extract it, also very nice
Kim J — Google review
Lovely area, lots of nature and walks, good facilities functional and clean, friendly staff, nice food in the cafe, museum was good but the best part was the caves, definitely allocate more time to those as it goes quick and there is a lot to explore, will definitely return for more adventure 😂
Peter R — Google review
Impressive mines with many parts illuminated, no need to bring your own torch. There’s also information boards and even a wheelchair friendly route, also suitable for anyone else using other mobility aids. There’s also attention to the large bat population that live in the mines. Outside, the limestone plant has been transformed into museum, from which you can access the chimney for a 360 view. Very well maintained and organised! Enjoyable for all ages :)
Annet O — Google review
Nice cave, but it is a bit expensive for only entrance to the cave and a small museum. The movie experience was quite good, it runs on the whole and half hour. The several walking routes are indicated by signs and colours, but are not always clear. However, there is little chance you will get lost. Exit signs are plentiful, and the map you receive at the entrance is sufficient. Especially because the cave is mined systematically, mostly straight corners and everything on the same level. We traveled here in the low season for bats, so there were little restrictions.
Martijn B — Google review
Definitely a visit worthy. Beautiful mines and lots of history. If you can see the old furnace and walk all over the mine. It's ok fair price and the souvenir shop has a thing or two for the once that's not there with you to see it. You can also eat there, the food looks good. But I didn't taste it so I won't tell you about that. The toilets are clean and the surrounding nature is so beautiful. It's a place where you can touch everything with your hands so it's a nice way to experience all of it. Parking is good but it's gravel. And unfortunately it's not wheelchair friendly. That's a bummer. You can however bring your dog. They are allowed in the mines and on the grounds. But as a walking person it all is ready to just take in. I can recommend this place easily. So gather up the dog and family and go see it.

Latinerhaven, or "The Latin Garden," is a beautiful and historic garden nestled in the heart of Viborg, Denmark. It offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city center, inviting visitors to stroll along its peaceful paths and enjoy the vibrant flora. History The garden's history dates back to a devastating fire in 1726 that ravaged much of Viborg. The area where the garden now sits was once a fire site. In 1760, it was transformed into the private garden of the headmaster of the Viborg Latin School. The garden was acquired by the municipality in 1928, after the school had moved. It was designed by a city gardener and still features the original "Rector's Gazebo," a protected landmark. What to See Latinerhaven is a sanctuary of diverse plant life. The garden is divided into different sections, showcasing a variety of flowers, perennials, and rhododendron bushes. A more recent addition is a section dedicated to schnapps herbs. Throughout the garden, you can also find a few historical monuments: * A monument to the great Danish poet St. St. Blicher. * A memorial plaque for the ornithologist H. Chr. C. Mortensen, known as "Fuglemortensen" (Bird Mortensen). * The "Lion Fountain," designed by architect Frederik Jensen. Nearby Attractions Latinerhaven's central location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring other historical and cultural sites in Viborg. Just a short walk away, you can find: * Viborg Cathedral: A stunning Romanesque cathedral with a rich history and beautiful paintings inside. * Skovgaard Museum: Located in the old town hall, this museum features works by the prominent Skovgaard artist family, including Joakim Skovgaard, who created the frescoes inside the cathedral * Viborg Museum: This museum offers a journey through the region's cultural and historical heritage. * The historic town center: Explore the charming, cobbled streets and medieval architecture of Viborg's oldest quarter.

Very nostalgic, especially when the bells 🔔 are doing their thing every hour. The Bruunshaab Gamle Papfabrik is a unique and fascinating museum that showcases a collection of antique machinery used for processing shredded paper and creating cardboard products. Visitors can explore several large rooms filled with these old machines, some of which have been in use for centuries. The museum operates using a hydroelectric generator, adding to its charm and sustainability. While the lack of English information may be a drawback for non-Danish speakers, there is an informative leaflet available.
Thats real industrial heritage and how it should be preserved and presented. All functional and to see in action. Very kind workers and great information. My home town in germany is known for its paper heritage but we only have a very lame theoretical museum. I would love to see an old papermill like this one here. Just amazing.
TheEvdriver — Google review
Quirky old school museum. Approx 50kr entry per person entry. Several large rooms full of machines used to process shredded paper and produce cardboard products which can be purchased in the shop. The card is solid stuff and the products are storage boxes, files etc. sounds much worse than it is - some of the machines we’re running on the day we visited and they have equipment used over the last couple of centuries. There’s a hydroelectric generator that powers the place as well. Would be 5 stars if I spoke danish as a lot of the information is not in English although there’s a pretty informative leaflet. There are picnic benches and a cycle track that’s easy to access from the parking as well.

Bruunshaab Gl. Papfabrik is a fascinating place to experience the art of traditional papermaking. The old machines and techniques give a real sense of history, and it’s impressive to see the craftsmanship involved. The staff were incredibly friendly and went out of their way to explain everything in English, making the visit even more enjoyable. A great spot for anyone interested in history, craftsmanship, or unique industrial heritage!

(Translated by Google) The title lies a bit... it's a nice little miniature village which is nice, nicely made, but there is also the old water mill which is VERY nicely maintained and which is STILL in operation, in addition there is a small museum next to the Café which is also worth a visit. Nestled in the enchanting landscape of Dollerup Bakker, The Manor House of Hald offers a serene escape into nature, complete with stunning glacial hills and verdant meadows. This historical gem is not just a picturesque site; it serves as a haven for writers seeking inspiration amidst its tranquil surroundings. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks through the grounds, which are steeped in history and connected to the nearby city of Viborg.
Although the entire circuit could easily be covered in 30-45 minutes, we spent an entire morning enjoying the calming, peaceful beauty of the day, the water, and the grounds. Some of the halds are slightly oversold (stand on a mound of earth where they once thought about building a castle), but others are full of history that tied in closely with our later self-guided tour of the city of Viborg. Had we not gone in winter, when the museum was closed, there would have been much more to learn. Overall, a wonderful stop on our circuit of Denmark.

Samia A — Google review
My 5 year old LOVES going here. As an adult I have some issues. There is absolutely nothing for adults to do here, but they still charge full admission, which is robbery in my opinion. You do get all you can drink coffee and tea though. They've added a trampoline area that costs extra pr hour to be allowed into, and that annoys me because it's taking up about 50% of the play area, so they removed previous play things/areas to make room, yet the entrance prices stayed the same. I wish they had a combined price, but paying the entrance fee for kids AND adults AND trampoline time just starts to feel a bit overpriced, and therefore we don't go as often as we would like. The food is fine; hot dogs, fries, burgers, etc. Nothing fancy.

Really pleasantly surprised with how fun this museum was. I took my two kids, who are 9 & 11 and they absolutely loved it there! There are so many activities that you don’t have time to get bored. Very interactive and educative. It costs 110dkk to get in but for 130dkk you can get a season pass, so it was a no brainer! My husband and I stayed in the cottage at Ørslevkloster for two days while visiting the Nordfjends villages where my ancestors had lived before emigrating to America in the 1850s. The accommodations are ascetic--although the radiant heaters and Wi-Fi ("a 21st-century manifestation of the spirit," according to the caretaker) work effectively. If you stay in the main building, you will have to share a communal bathroom and kitchen. You also will have to accept responsibility for cleaning up after yourself and preparing your own meals, but the experience will be unforgetable. The estate manager (a native English-speaker) graciously took time to show us around the property and tell us about its history. The grounds include several hectares of woods with defined walking trails, as well as livestock pastures, cropland, orchards, and a vegetable garden. The nearby village of Højslev can supply you with groceries and other services. If you're seeking a place for quiet reflection and inspiration without spending a fortune, this is it.

(Translated by Google) Nice little local history museum Steen Steensen Blicher grew up in Vium, where his father was a priest. West of Vium, west of Thorning lies the heath that became his breathing space – a sanctuary away from financial hardships, obligations, expectations, but which also became the place from which he drew inspiration for his literary production. Here he found the characters of the short stories, the stories, the environment. The area with its sandy soil, the heather, the open expanses helped to form Steen Steensen Blicher's identity - that area, just like Blicher's area, forms the foundation/cornerstone/core of the local population's identity and self-perception today. His texts live in the population - with the population. All over Denmark in fact, but especially here. Right here! What you can experience: - More than 600 m2 exhibition about life in the countryside in the 1800s - The poet, priest and social debater St. St. Bleach - Grathe Hede – the struggle for power - Exciting special exhibitions throughout the year - Promising animal exhibition - the wolf is coming (Original) Fint lille lokalhistorisk museum Steen Steensen Blicher voksede op i Vium, hvor hans far var præst. Her fandt han novellernes karakterer, fortællingerne, miljøet. I hele Danmark i virkeligheden, men i særdeleshed her. Lige her!

Next, especially about the poet and parish priest Steen Steensen Blicher's time in Thorning, where several first editions of several publications are on display. A few years ago, the museum opened "The Struggle for Power", which is about the events of 1157, where the power struggle between the three kings Svend, Knud and Valdemar ended with the death of the former on Grathe Hede. The museum also has a unique collection of birds and mine animals, which the museum took over from the estate of a private collector. I visited Gedhusmuseet (Karup Aviation Museum) on 8 June 2022, having timed my visit for the one day per week when it is open. No problem with parking and the admission charge is modest. In return I had a fascinating visit lasting almost two hours, accompanied by a couple of the museum's excellent and knowledgeable guides. There is a comprehensive series of displays ranging from the time the wartime Luftwaffe constructed Grove airfield - eventually turning it into a major, integrated air defence centre equipped with the He-219 night fighter. After the war the base was expanded and renamed RDAF Karup. In my opinion this is a very understated museum with a lot of interesting artefacts, displays, models, photographs, diagrams, maps, and even a WW2 guard bunker that one can enter. In the hangar buildings there are a variety of aircraft and vehicles which were in use by the RDAF. This museum is well worth a visit.

Digterparken is a delightful green oasis nestled in the heart of a bustling city, offering an unexpected escape into nature. This expansive park features an impressive collection of fruit trees, including 74 apple and pear trees, alongside majestic chestnut and beech trees that provide ample shade. Visitors can also admire a whimsical brick sculpture adorned with various motifs, adding an artistic touch to the serene environment. It's truly a cozy gem where you can unwind and enjoy the beauty of nature amidst urban life.
I visited this park last month via a photoscape taken in winter (2019?) in Virtual Reality Oculus Quest Wander app. The VR Immersive experience allowed me to "feel" the moment that was captured.

(Translated by Google) We went to the Jysk Fire Museum with our son. He is a big fire department fan. A comprehensive collection of fire brigade vehicles and paraphernalia was on display. There are really old exhibits and it was very interesting to see how fires were put out in the past. Of course the building and the grounds are getting old. Nevertheless, you can see the love in the details. Comparing this museum to museums that are fully supported by the state is not fair. We thought it was great that volunteers made this museum what it is...probably they will be former firefighters and lovers of this institution. There was a nice gentleman there who spoke Danish. Unfortunately we don't speak Danish, but we were still able to communicate somewhat. The visit to the museum was very charming and our son in particular was very happy.

Viborg Miniby is an enchanting destination that showcases the incredible craftsmanship of dedicated artisans who pour their heart and soul into creating a miniature version of Viborg. Visitors are encouraged to take a guided tour of the workshop, which offers a fascinating insight into the meticulous process behind constructing this charming mini-city at a scale of 1:10. The attention to detail is astounding, from tiny door handles and street signs to intricately designed windows and roofs.

(Translated by Google) It is a fantastic job that you do, by building the very nice houses from the cathedral quarter in old Viborg in a scale of 1:10. When you used to live in Viborg and know the neighborhood well, it is incredibly exciting to see the small houses. And also see the workshop, where everything for the houses is made, from the small door handles and street signs/house numbers to windows/doors to bricks and tiled roofs. Really exciting. Unfortunately, the cobblestones between the houses are not the easiest to drive on in a wheelchair, but the "street" has been made wider precisely so that you can drive there in a wheelchair. You can see opening hours on their website.
