The Musée Arthur Rimbaud in Charleville-Mézières, France, pays homage to the renowned poet who was born in the town in 1854. Housed in a converted mill on the banks of the Meuse River, this museum has recently reopened after a two-year renovation. It features an extensive collection of Rimbaud's works, letters, and memorabilia from his travels through Africa.
Interesting museum of this famous man. I missed out on the fine works with not speaking French.
Ewan B — Google review
Interesting and unexpected take on the concept of a 'museum'. It's more a series of experiences (of whispered poetry in the blue room at the top) and impressions. Certainly worth a visit, even if you are not particularly an Arthur Rimbaud fan.
Alastair M — Google review
Very welcoming staff. The museum is interestingly organised However, the floor where there are voices reciting famous Rimbaud writings is only of interest if you have read the works.

Parc du Mont-Olympe is a charming destination located near Musee Arthur Rimbaud, offering a picturesque view of the river Maas and the surrounding forest. Families with children can enjoy the playground while taking in the serene atmosphere. The area also holds historical significance, as it was once home to a fortress that stood until the late 17th century.
Great aire well positioned for access to the town and parkland. Lovely view of the marina and the swimming pool is 4 minutes walk away highly recommended

Adequate pitch. Good location for the town. Facilities OK but 'tired' and unloved...had clearly seen better days. No Internet. No seating eg picnic tables for basic campers ( walkers and cyclists).

I'm in love! Ghent is great! Manchester is cool! Reims is ok. I could go on...this os a great park just outside of Charleville Mézières...so cross the parc and dive in the city centre...
Pieter M — Google review
Lovely public park. Cycle paths & lots of play areas.
Sue M — Google review
Perfect location. Next to the river. Full facilities and a laundry to boot. Plenty of trees for shade Can get a bit noisy from locals leaving the bar down the road, but if your a heavy sleeper you won't hear them.
Lesley J — Google review
Nice shady pitches. Welcoming receptionist and shops not too far. Nice ablutions.
Jose D — Google review
Location seems great, though I arrived at 17:50 and reception was long since closed when it specifies on the door itself and website ..18:00. I just walked in and camped regardless. Upkeep was visibly lacking with trash and overgrown pitches, and no security either when there are groups of migrants wandering in the periphery. Strange vibes indeed, and accompanied by lots of evening mosquitos. Maybe it was an unlucky day, though....no 24 hour staff for a campsite this large is really not good, and no security either...

Entry to this museum is included in the ticket to the Rimbaud museum in the old mill Rimbaud museum on the Meuse and the Ardennes museum in place ducale. This historic house is transformer into multiple galleries of various art and artists. Some galleries are modern and others are traditional. It is a great way to preserve an historic house, which would become a restaurant or an inn to survive.

(Translated by Google) Oddly enough, there's nothing but empty, slightly dilapidated rooms and a few photos each accompanied by a short text. And yet it's very evocative of this elsewhere that Rimbaud sought all his life. Emptiness and dreams. We were alone during our visit. Charm guaranteed. (Translated by Google) A must-see The Maison des Ailleurs is a place dedicated to the poet Arthur Rimbaud, in his hometown of Charleville-Mézières. It is located on the same quay and a few meters from the Arthur-Rimbaud Museum. The link between these two complementary establishments is embodied by the poem-chairs by Quebec artist Michel Goulet, entitled L'Alchimie des Ailleurs. The Maison des Ailleurs was created in a building where one of the apartments was inhabited by the Rimbaud family in the 19th century. Arthur Rimbaud's mother, Vitalie Rimbaud (née Cuif), and her children lived there from 1869 to 1875. The Rimbaud family lived on the first floor, in a 120-square-meter apartment. Arthur Rimbaud was aged between 15 and 21 at the time. This was the most creative period of his life in terms of his literary work, but it was also the one in which he ran away from home on numerous occasions. It was a period of adolescence, of rejection of family life and the social constraints that his mother wanted him to respect, of disgust with the town of Charleville and of dreams of other horizons.

Musée de l'Ardenne is situated in a corner of the Place Ducale and offers a combined ticket with two nearby museums. The museum provides an extensive and well-organized tour route, featuring modern lighting, signage, and explanatory panels that highlight the diverse collection. Visitors can explore archaeological finds from the Ardennes and even observe marionettes in motion on the top floor. While some expected war-related displays were absent, this omission allows for a focus on other intriguing aspects of history.
One good, very good museum. It was a nice surprise to visit it. Totally worth it!

One of the top the museums in Charleville, located on the Southeast corner of Place ducale. The ticket includes entry to two more museums in the city. Interesting objects of art, history, and culture for both children as well as adults. Everything is in balance and well displayed. A visit to the small bookstore is worth the extra time. Also look out for special exhibits in the gallery adjacent to the bookstore.
Srini — Google review
Placed at the southeast corner in Place Ducale. In winter time, reduced opening times, please check attached pictures with details. A saving option is to get a combined ticket for the Musée Rimbaud as well. A good place to park free your vehicle is Place Jacques Félix, at 5 minutes walking distance.
Francisco N — Google review
Had a lovely hour walking through this museum and seeing the archaeological finds of the Ardennes. Was surprised that the marionnettes we wanted to see where housed inside here and that we could watch the clock and see the entire movement of the housing for them on the top floor of the museum. We were surprised that it seems one of the advertisements had a picture of either WWI or WW2, but there were no displays having to do with war time here. That of course leaves room for all the other parts! Was definitely a nice stop.

(Translated by Google) So here you are in something very interesting and truly complete, it's huge and the tour route is well studied, the progression of the themes and exhibition pieces is excellent and well done. It's modern, the lighting, signage and explanatory panels highlight the windows and numerous objects. You can't imagine everything there is to see in this place, it's incredible, such diversity, it's more and more beautiful as you wander around, what wonder and discoveries. In addition, you end up behind the scenes of the machinery and mechanism of the clock of the great puppeteer, which will be on view at the end of your visit outside the museum on the adjoining square, an animated show lasting a few minutes at the right times. The price of the visit is very cheap (here we understand everything about the culture) do not hesitate to take the combined ticket 3 sites (with the Rimbaud museum and the museum of elsewhere) inexpensive!! Well done to the very friendly team. Notre-Dame d'Espérance, a Gothic style church built between 1499-1682, is located about 15 minutes away from statue de Charles de Gonzague. The church is renowned for its stunning stained glass windows, which took 25 years to create, and the artwork of Rene Durrbach. Visitors can admire abstract stained glass windows and light candles at the statue of the black virgin for their hopes to be fulfilled.
The interior of the church is absolutely stunning, if you love architecture I would definitely recommend, because the interior is also really open and truly lets in all the colours. the outside is poorly maintained, but that also has its charm as it is a reminder of the temporary nature of things and also adds to the contrast/suprise between inside and outside one could state; the skin and the inner soul
Juultje L — Google review
It is one of the best churches with stained glass. It is an old church, but the windows are modern 1970. Picasso was asked but suggested another artist with similar views. One of those gems that are outside the places the standard tourists visits.

A peaceful church where one can go to look at abstract stained glass windows. Light a candle at the statue of the black virgin of you want your hopes fulfilled. There are guide pages on how to interpret the art. The history of the church is quite fascinating. It has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over.

This church is a must! The windows are very unique, even though it looks like one more gothic church, the windows glass makes the difference. It was all made by the same artist almost 59 years ago and there is some information about it inside!

What a wonderful surprise in the almost deserted town of Charleville (on a rainy day during August holidays)! Through a quiet passage you enter a friendly welcome area in front of an impressive open kitchen. The restaurant is downstairs in an impressive, yet cozy cellar vault. Very friendly waiters (fluent in french. English and dutch) accomodated us. The menu offered just the right extent of choices, and so did the winelist. We enjoyed Arthurs Cocktail as apéritif, followed by a dry white Cote de Beaune (2021). Entrées were a sublime tarte with zucchini (courgettes) on a bed of curry espuma, topped with coco icecream and aubergine wrapped couscous with oriental flavors. Main courses: Scallops with black rice and the most tender and tasty beef filet with morel sauce. And for a finish: coffee gourmand, of course. We were delighted, filled and totally satisfied!

Place Ducale is an extraordinary square, modeled after the Place de Vosges in Paris. It's a great spot to enjoy a drink or meal on a sunny evening, exuding a special charm. The square features sand and a small pool for children, offering games, entertainment, and music for adults. With its Louis XIII style buildings and surrounding bars and restaurants, it provides an opportunity to imagine life 400 years ago.
Even though it seems strange to review a public square, I feel that I must. The place was lively and fun, with lots of nice restaurants and fun for young and old. We booked a stay in on of the houses around the square. If you don't need a lot of sleep, this is very authentic. Be aware, though, the bell of the clock tower goes off every 15 minutes!

Nestled in the heart of Charleville-Mézières, La Papillote is a modern dining gem that offers a delightful culinary experience. With its warm and inviting atmosphere, this restaurant features an array of menu options including à la carte selections, set menus, and tasting experiences. Guests can indulge in seasonal dishes crafted by the talented chef Florian Lejeune, who has honed his skills since he was just 14 years old.
Excellent. Very high standard French cuisine with a modern imagination (pumpkin sorbet!) Incredibly good price/quality we had 2 x 3 course menu and a bottle of wine €110! The cheese board is fantastic. Also Marco the head waiter is attentive, knowledgeable and brave enough to use his English language 👏. Make the effort to visit!

not as expected it's more bed 'n breakfast then hotel the booking website said with parking, but that's just public parking in the street (which is very cheap) breakfast: only bread with sweet topping (no cheese, no eggs) the price is okay for what you get, but I expected a bit more when booking "hotel" there's a big square at 2 min walking distance with lot's of restaurant terraces

The Great Puppeteer is a unique clock that tells a story every hour, featuring the 4 native children. It is located in a beautiful park and is a must-see attraction in Charleville Mezieres. The giant puppet show lasts for a few minutes and takes place at the back of the Ardenne Museum on a small square near Place Ducale. Visitors are advised to catch the spectacle at specific hours, as it may occasionally experience technical issues due to its age.
Very creative place/ puppetery collage. For creative people and serious work artist

Oh dear. We made a special trip back here at 2pm as I insisted we should watch the show. We needn't really have bothered. In honesty I wasn't expecting it to work at all, it looks very tired & there's fencing around the lower level. At 2pm the red doors opened, the mouth went up & down & the two puppets inside moved a bit. I'm glad we went back to see it, but it really wasn't worth the effort. It's a shame, as no doubt with a bit of effort it could be fully restored & wonderful again. PS. the legs don't move!

The prison square which has become a place to eat, a simple market. All the visitors we met were disappointed. I find that the festival has lost its former magic... there are as many food stands and refreshments as there are shows in the streets. However, the program of shows remains varied and numerous but few places. You have to get started early. Inflation must play a major role but with both an edition, we should do better and remedy the creation of atmospheres of the past. PS: the pedestrian street has become the gourmet alley rather than anything else. Nestled in the heart of Charleville-Mézières, the town hall stands as a striking example of neo-gothic architecture. With its impressive belfry and clocktower, along with two elegant towers and a beautifully adorned facade, this building is not just visually captivating but also rich in history. Interestingly, it was constructed after World War I and completed in 1930, making it a relatively modern addition to the city's landscape.

The layout of the stages and the different restaurants/bars is well thought out. Varied program (Will Smith??), there is something for everyone, with a theme per stage, which avoids crazy back and forths. Reasonable prices, varied food but a little disappointing in quality/quantity. On the other hand, it was a genius idea to have implemented a comic book festival in the thing, with authors in large numbers to sign their works (Original) Festival très agréable, à taille humaine, où on peut se déplacer sans bousculade, dans un cadre vraiment très agréable. But it's great!!! So, we arrived super late for the concert, we would have been early if we had walked from the parking lot. Once we got there, it was good, the food was very good (Ardennes burger). (Translated by Google) A very well-organized festival! Everything is designed to make it easy to get there (parking 2 km away, shuttles depending on the year, a partnership with Fluo for the train, etc.). Once there, you'll find plenty of food and drink areas. Everything is designed to encourage local produce (cheese, meat, soft drinks, beer). You won't find that good old Coke or other drinks there, and that's a good thing! There are even water stations! The festival is located on a large site, making it easy to get around and relax between concerts! You can even walk on the Meuse River thanks to one or more floating footbridges! To ensure you have a great time, I recommend several things: carefully check the website for details on how the festival operates (accessibility, cashless, prohibited items, etc.), bring a water bottle to refill your water (not a glass one, as this is prohibited), have the map, your tickets, and the schedule in a format that can be viewed offline (the network doesn't always reach everyone on site), and download the cabaret app. And then, enjoy yourself to the fullest!

We went to park TERRALTITUDE to go treeclimbing; called the Accrobranche. The staff was very friendly and had a smooth experience getting geared up. The routes were pretty fun and creative, but didn't go very high. I would have enjoyed that personally. One downside was that park oversight seemed to be understaffed. In front of us were a bunch of kids that were too young and too scared to do a difficult route. They didn't dare go further so we ended up stuck there for 30 minutes without anyone coming to help or assist. Hope they get more staff in the future.

From booking online to the Fantasticable zip wire experience, it was all well organised and enjoyable. 5 adults went at 1030am (we are Defender owners, so pleased that the 4x4 which takes you up is a 110 and can take the rough track without going very slowly) and once in the harness we all felt very safe and secure. The thrill-seeker part of me wanted it to be even faster, but the way the land falls away and then you cross the wide Meuse river is great at any speed! Boys wanted to do it again IMMEDIATELY!

Champagne LECLERC BRIANT is a pioneering champagne house that has been certified biodynamic since the 1980s. They blend organic production with innovative techniques, such as aging in metal barrels and storing bottles in the sea covered in barnacles for a unique flavor. Visitors can enjoy modern tasting rooms and admire the stunning view of Epernay, at the heart of the region.
Booked this tour on the advice of some reviews and wasn’t disappointed. Emma was lovely and made us feel really welcome and special. Her tour was very informative and gave us insight into the workings of a real Champagne winery (as opposed to some of the other more superficial ‘mass’ tours). The Champagne was lovely, well made, and the rose very special (my favourite). Would definitely recommend that you add this to your list of places to visit (as a minimum, one large house and one smaller house such as Leclerc).
Philip M — Google review
We had a fantastic tour of a this house which has both a very interesting history and and an admirable present philosophy. Highly recommend to book a tour if you are visiting the champagne region. Opting for the medium level, the so called immersive tour, gave the chance to try something truly unique, a champagne matured on the bottom of the ocean.

Make sure you go to the right place for your tour! It’s not the one on Avenue de Champagne- it’s about a 20 minute walk, so you’re likely to miss some of the tour, which is what we did. The address is on your email confirmation. Tour was pretty good. I’m not sure if we missed it, but I would have appreciated more basic information about how champagne is made. We saw the stainless steel tanks & learned how they are cleaned. We learned something about biodynamics & fermentation in glass. We saw into some cellars and learned about how the Abyss range is matured. And we had a tasting of 2 champagnes, which was interesting .

Regret booking this. The experience was disappointing from start to finish. They have two locations(with the exact same names) and we accidentally arrived at the wrong one. Instead of handling the situation with some flexibility, the staff immediately blamed us and told us to ‘check our tickets.’ The two locations are only a six-minute drive apart, so we wouldn’t have been significantly late if they had simply let us join the tour. We actually booked our uber on the spot to make our way there asap but they told us to cancel that. When we asked if we could join any of the later tours, we were told it was fully booked – though honestly, would two extra people have made such a difference? This lack of hospitality set the tone. Reluctantly, they offered us a tasting at the location we had come to, despite the fact we had paid €90 for a tour. What we got were four of the tiniest pours we experienced anywhere in Champagne, and worse, the wines were flat and stale (as you can see in the video). It was especially noticeable that many bottles were left uncorked on the counters without stoppers, which likely explained the poor quality of what we were served. To top it off, the waiter who served us made a point of repeating that the ‘correct address was on the tickets.’ The service throughout was curt, unkind, and at times just plain rude. Overall, this was the lowest point of our trip. With so many warm, authentic, and generous champagne houses in the region, I would strongly recommend skipping this one.
Esmée — Google review
The excursion was great, and the guide was passionate and energetic. However, the champagne served was disappointing—stale, flat, and at the wrong temperature. For the price of the tasting, this was a very strange and underwhelming experience. If the wine can’t even be served properly, it raises serious doubts about the rest of the winemaking process. Probably the first time I’ve ever rated a champagne tasting 1 star.
Eugene M — Google review
I visited Champagne Leclerc Briant this past December, and I honestly can’t recommend it enough. The entire experience was exceptional, and a big part of that was thanks to Antonella, our guide. She was incredibly warm, knowledgeable, and passionate, and she really made the visit unforgettable. She explained everything in such an engaging and approachable way- from the biodynamic methods they use to the history of the house and the winemaking process. I learned so much, and it made me appreciate the Champagne even more. The tasting itself was a highlight. Each glass had its own character, and you could really taste the care and philosophy behind the wines. The atmosphere was relaxed yet elegant, and I left feeling inspired and grateful for the experience. If you're anywhere near Champagne, make sure to stop by. It’s truly something special.

(Translated by Google) A wonderful experience at this museum. After a short film introducing various professionals involved in the industry, the children set off to explore the museum using a tablet. Nothing is fragile, and the children can explore independently at their own pace. They can also participate by hammering in vintage nails. The person who manages the museum, Nadia, is exceptionally kind! We were able to discuss a wide range of topics with her, and she even offered us a workshop using 3D pens at the end of the visit. Both children and adults were delighted with this visit.

(Translated by Google) This review primarily concerns the day of our visit. There was no consideration for visitors that day. Construction work, exhibition setup, interruptions to the tour, and part of the room was inaccessible. No discount was offered to compensate for the inconvenience. Closing the site for the day would have been respectful of the holiday visitors who could have visited on a more suitable day. Otherwise, the museum is quite comprehensive; audio guides are available, but not with headphones. This is also why it was unpleasant to visit that day; the loudspeaker didn't cover the noise of the construction. The video at the end of the tour somewhat enhanced the description of the visit.

Museum
Forest Museum Renwez is a well-maintained and peaceful museum that offers insights into the local woodland flora, fauna, and the evolution of wood harvesting practices and mechanization. Visitors can explore at their own pace with an audio guide, discovering intriguing details about an industry often taken for granted. The museum features indoor and outdoor sections showcasing forest professions, including a tribute to Agapit Delmont, a charcoal burner. The outdoor trail provides clear paths with exhibitions on historical forest practices and activities.
Plenty of parking. Good exhibitions with some information in English indoors and an informative film (about 15mins). Outside walk through the forest has a clear path with lots of exhibitions of old forest practices and scences illustrating forest activities. Two indoor exhibitions. Took about 90mins walk outside with a 3 year old. There were some colouring activities for children inside. The small shop had some appropriate items to remember the first, not expensive. Staff were fantastic, very helpful and took time to help. The lady who helped us spoke excellent English and helped with our attempts and French. Particularly kind to our 3 year old which was lovely. Definitely worth a visit if in the area. Cost 20Euros for 3 adults, 1 child and an audio guide ( we just had one )

Nice walk through the woods and inside
George D — Google review
As others have stated this is a quiet and well run museum on the woodland flora, fauna of the area … and mostly about the development of working practices and mechanisation for harvesting wood. You can go at you own pace with an audio guide and you will quickly find many items of interest. Like many things in life, what seems basic at a superficial level quickly becomes a source of wonder and interesting detail as soon as you scratch the surface. An industry that is easy to take for granted. Yet you will be left in awe of the sheer effort and practical ingenuity of those who worked these woods.

(Translated by Google) Small, very friendly museum which raises awareness of the protection of forests and allows you to discover ancient woodworking trades. The children loved it (the parents too), with the added bonus of a little investigation to solve. It was a very pleasant walk in this very mild autumn weather. Of course in wet weather it must be less pleasant but you just have to plan ahead 😉 An outdoor picnic area and a very practical closed one.
