Donkin Reserve, Pyramid and Lighthouse is a must-visit park in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The reserve offers stunning harbor views and is home to a stone pyramid and an 1860s lighthouse. It holds historical significance as it was named after Elizabeth and features the Donkin Heritage Trail, which showcases mid-1800s buildings like Grey's School Institute, the Main Library, City Hall, and the Feather Market Centre.
The Donkin Reserve and Pyramid is a must-visit for anyone interested in the rich history of Port Elizabeth. The site offers breathtaking views of the harbor and ocean, making it a perfect spot for photography and relaxation. A highlight of the visit is the Tourist Information Desk located on the premises. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, providing valuable insights into the area's history and ensuring a memorable experience. The reserve also offers safe on-site parking, making it convenient for visitors. Overall, this is a well-maintained and iconic landmark that beautifully combines history, stunning views, and excellent service. Highly recommended!
Beatrix B — Google review
Could be amazing with a bit more care. The grass was really overgrown, the pathways were broken, and the place was quite dirty. The lighthouse exterior could definitely use a fresh coat of paint, and the windows at the top were pretty grimy. That said, climbing the narrow steep stairs was actually kind of fun and gave the visit a little adventure
Angelo L — Google review
This is a historic landmark and is has been sorely neglected. It is such an important place in terms of tourism, and at one point around 2010 it was immaculate. It is being neglected by whoever is supposed to be taking care of it. Visit it anyway before it fades away completely. Something drastic needs to be done, the tourism department that is running it needs to do more here.
Norman V — Google review
Well I’ve been here twice now, once on a date and another time my mom and I went there. Honestly I enjoyed every time. There is parking right there, and the view from up at the top of the lighthouse is pretty cool. The stairs leading up are quite narrow so be prepared. It’s clean but you can tell it’s old but still cool. You can go right up to the top and even out. I hav eno complaints.
Caleb N — Google review
Tourism guides/managers are very knowledgeable about the monument and the area. Sad that a few of the plaques have been removed. Would be nice if the vegetation around the Garden of Remembrance was a little more taken care of. View from the top of the lighthouse is good; a good workout for the legs as well. There is parking right next to the buildings and lighthouse, entrance to parking can be missed. Felt quite safe, though you always need to be mindful no matter where you are.
Andrea L — Google review
Definitely a must visit when in Gqeberha. The view from the top was good but the view from the tower was even better. There is ample parking at the place itself. The streets around the place did not seem very safe to me and this was also confirmed by the person working there at the time. The climb to the top is not easy and requires some effort but the view asses this effort.
Dieter G — Google review
Wow! What a beautiful sight and must see tourists attraction in Gqeberha. Just look out for the big flag post hoisting the flag of South Africa🇿🇦 visible from the N2 passing through Gqeberha. What a symmetrical Pyramid. An expression of love like the Taj Mahal. The whole history on how Port Elizabeth got its name
Makhoso K — Google review
Such incredible potential but left to go to ruin. No Cafe, No Flag, Gardens are unkept. Tourist office is good. Lighthouse needs maintenance. Probably no 1 spot for tourists and the most neglected by the municipality.

Kragga Kamma Game Park is a nature preserve located just a short drive from the city, offering a sanctuary for various rare animal species such as white rhinos, buffalos, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, nyalas, bonteboks, and lechwes. Visitors can opt for self-drives or moderately priced guided game drives to observe these animals in their natural habitat.
I loved it! It’s beautiful, secluded and has the best views of the sunset and sunrise. Staff was amazing and friendly, morning game driver super lekker. Food was okay, overall, stunning place for a retreat.
NOTHANDO S — Google review
I was hoping to see rhinos or giraffes on my own and therefore chose the self-drive option in the park. According to the description, the roads were supposed to be well-maintained and suitable for regular vehicles. However, this does not reflect the reality at all. The tracks are in such condition that driving without an SUV or 4x4 is problematic – especially due to the low ground clearance of standard cars. If it rains, some parts could even become dangerous. In my opinion, the phrase “well-maintained roads” is highly exaggerated and misleading, especially for rental car drivers. I immediately aborted the drive and exited the park again – I didn’t see any animals, but I didn’t mind. My car is more important to me. Overall, it was a disappointing experience, and I would only recommend the self-drive if you have a proper off-road vehicle. That said, I want to mention that the young man at the gate was very kind, friendly, and helpful.

Amazing game reserve on our doorstep! Informative and knowledgeable guides. Lovely forest walk. Childrens Play facilities and braai area. Plan your own drive if you like but highly recommend the tour.
Rathi B — Google review
Yhoo the pace is amazing, it's so quiet and peaceful. The kids they love it so much, the space for them to run around is plenty. I'll definitely come for a full day next time, not for business, but for relaxation
Unathi K — Google review
Came to the Kragga Kamma Game Park for a self drive viewing. I sure wish I was told to bring a car with a high suspension as the trails do get a bit tricky as you drive, but seeing the different animals and at your own pace is definitely something I recommend. Some of the animals actually come closer to the cars so you can stop and view or take pictures of them. Definitely a great experience and it's R150 a person which is quite affordable 😊
Viwe K — Google review
We had a great experience with our game drive. Our tour guide Terry told us so many interesting facts about the animals she even had the childrens attention all the time. This game drive was worth every cent.
Nadia B — Google review
Don't get me wrong, absolutely stunning place, don't know why but I was expecting more. Play area, top for kids, shop a bit pricey but overall a good experience. My motto happy kids = happy parents, in that regard 5 stars. Me personally just disappointed.

200 hectares, so excellent size for someone to see lots of wild animals, if your time is short. (2 hour game ride...) Excellent and knowledgeable guide (Sam); she was friendly, engaging and had lots of excellent titbits of info about the animals etc...nice coffee shop too!

Bayworld is a long-standing museum that offers a family-friendly experience with exhibits showcasing maritime and historical artifacts, as well as engaging animal shows and handling sessions. Visitors can explore the natural and cultural history of the area while observing marine life in the oceanarium and encountering indigenous snake species. Adjacent to Bayworld is the Port Elizabeth Museum, which features diverse exhibitions ranging from dinosaurs to maritime history. Daily presentations include seal and penguin showcases, along with interactive sessions with snakes.
I came here a few times already. This place must have looked amazing in its prime and when it was well kept. Now the place looks and feels old. Dirty and just dead. Still pretty cool though. They have a nice museum to go through, some tortoises, plenty of snakes, from small to could eat two whole people kind of snakes, the museum is pretty cool. It’s what I went there for. My only complaint is that I wish I could see this place in its prime.
Caleb N — Google review
Went to bayworld the place is not too expensive but the ocean part was closed and we could only visit the dinosourus, meuseam and the reptiles. The gift shop was closed and years later it is still saying coming soon . Some of the specimens was dry or broken. Some of the displays was of or lights do not work. Some displayed objects was full of dust The place really needs a revamp or maintenance as you will see the place is not getting maintenance on a regular basis. Some people who work there is bias against some of the visitors as they will tell you no food and or drink allowed but when you walk up the stairs not only will you see the staff member munch on a burger you will also see other visitors eating and drinking. There was also a meuseam tour but we were not given the opportunity to join the tour with the guide
Mrs.B — Google review
Bayworld was once a treasured destination in Port Elizabeth. It held a special place in the hearts of locals and tourists, known for its engaging exhibits, vibrant marine life, and educational experiences. Families would visit with excitement, children wide-eyed as they watched dolphins leap through the air, or wandered through the museum filled with displays that brought the natural world to life. It was a place that inspired curiosity and created lasting memories. But those days feel like a distant dream. Today, Bayworld is a heartbreaking sight. What once stood as a symbol of pride and learning has been reduced to a decaying, neglected space. The animal enclosures are in a dreadful state. Trash is scattered in and around them, with no effort made to keep the areas clean or safe. In some cases, there are even dead animals left in the enclosures, a truly disturbing sign of how far standards have fallen. It is difficult to understand how such a lack of care has been allowed to continue. The entire facility feels forgotten. Dust clings to every surface, and windows are so dirty they block out the light. Once vibrant and informative displays have remained unchanged for over a decade, making the museum feel more like a time capsule than a living, educational space. Nothing has been updated, improved, or even maintained. The signs of decay are everywhere, from broken fixtures to faded posters and empty exhibit rooms. Visitors who remember Bayworld in its prime can only feel dismay at the contrast. There is no sense of progress or rejuvenation. Instead, the space feels abandoned, not just physically but in spirit. The energy that once made Bayworld a place of joy and discovery has been completely lost. The sadness is made worse by the knowledge of what it used to be. It was a place that held potential to educate and inspire, a place that could have evolved and remained relevant. But that opportunity has been squandered. Bayworld now serves as a grim reminder of what happens when a place is left to deteriorate without vision or care. The community deserves better. The animals deserve better. And the memories of what Bayworld used to be deserve more than this slow and painful decline. Until serious changes are made, it will remain not only a disappointment but a disgrace.

Best time to visit this place is during school days. The place seems a bit old inside but there is soo much great things to learn about the Eastern Cape here.
Itumeleng M — Google review
We were welcomed by the friendly staff, they informed us that the aquarium is closed due to construction. The museum is big, has a variety of things to look for. It was the first time I see fashion section in a museum. What was more interesting was a section that contains a list and things that happened first in PE. The snake section is something else, saw the biggest python. It was a nice experience, hope after the constructions the place will be maintained to standard.
Fredah T — Google review
The museum is good, reptile park was ok. Unfortunately the aquarium was under maintenance and couldn't go there. A lot of the museum things could have been kept more cleaner, it has accumulated a bit of dust over the years especially the ones sealed inside a case.
Thilipan S — Google review
It was lovely seeing the penguins and seals and was very educational but the place needs work. Part of the aquarium has been closed down. I really hope that the necessary renovations can be done soon to return the aquarium to its former glory. The animals are in good condition but they deserve better. The museum was very interesting and much bigger than I expected, I actually ran out of time and didn't get through everything. It's seen better days but all in all Bayworld was still a really fun experience!
Michaela — Google review
The animals are not being kept well after. Even plastic in the cages. It honestly so sad. You can see how depressed those poor babies are. The crocodile doesn’t even have water. They. Need. To. Be. Taken. Care. Of. It feels like walking into a graveyard.

Nestled on the southwestern edge of Algoa Bay, Cape Recife Nature Reserve stands out as a must-visit destination for those who cherish the great outdoors. Spanning an impressive 366 hectares, this stunning reserve is a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts, showcasing an array of ecosystems from coastal dunes to rugged shorelines and unspoiled beaches. Whether you're looking to explore its diverse habitats or simply soak in the breathtaking scenery, Cape Recife Nature Reserve promises an unforgettable experience amidst nature's beauty.
Security guard at the entrance was friendly. Updated us, we need to purchase tickets inside the lodge. R107, Per car which isn't bad. Helps towards upkeep funds for the reserve. Penguin Centre based inside the reserve was awesome to see. With the most friendly people. The Rather rockey beach feels untouched an just picture perfect. The lighthouse, stand at its doorways felt like being in some scene of a movie just so picture perfect an beautiful. I did the walk up to the top of the lighthouse. Which needed some energy, and fitness. I am glad I did it, was a cool experience. (Cost was R100pp you get a cold beverage when you return to the bottom) The staff at the lighthouse was friendly an helped with much info within their knowledge. Thank you to all, for the friendly welcome it made our experience all that more amazing ❤️🌞📷

Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve, located about 35 kilometers west of Port Elizabeth, is a hiker's paradise spread across 500 hectares. It offers a picturesque setting to see Proteas in their natural habitat, with different flowers blooming throughout the year. The river walk trail provides an opportunity to observe diverse flora and fauna, although shade is limited along the route. Despite some scattered rubble near the water, the reserve is generally well-maintained and ideal for walks and hikes.
We hiked the 7.9km loop on a gorgeous Sunday morning. The scenery was gorgeous and we picnicked at one of the many tables. There are various routes from 600m to 7.9km and suitable for all hikers. Note no dogs allowed
Mari N — Google review
Stunning hiking trails. Recently did the Forest Trail to the Van Stadens Bridge. The walk can get quite steep and difficult if you're not a regular hiker, so it's not as easy as advertised. But the beautiful views, nature, birds and flowers make it all worth it. Would definitely recommend if you're able🌿
Annelu R — Google review
The longest route is about 7km long. Such a beautiful reserve 😍 💕 take a lot of water because the karoo can get very hot. Spectacular views and wild flowers for days 🌼🌺 FREE ENTRY
Nicole H — Google review
It's one of the best hiking trails 👣 I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. The reserve has picnic spots under the shade of trees. Convenient to enjoy before you prefer to take on a trail or after your time spent in nature. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. Love the idea of the tuckshop! Go walk or run, you'll love it! The trail to choose is entirely up to you!
Rochelle S — Google review
We recently visited Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve, and it was absolutely breathtaking! This place offers stunning views and a beautiful, peaceful environment. Best of all, entry is free, making it accessible to everyone. Whether you're a nature lover, a hiker, or just looking for a relaxing day out, this reserve is a must-see. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to enjoy some time in nature and appreciate its beauty!

We attended the Annual Plant Sale this time around - finally! Have been missing it each year for a while. I'd definitely say that one should get there early as the entry and exit times were annoying with one lane of traffic. I have to assume half the plants had already been taken too as the remaining selection at 10h30 wasn't to die for. I did still find some Aloes I didn't have so it was not a wasted trip at all. Perhaps more vendors are necessary too as the queues were far too long. No doubt we will be back although this wasn't the best visit ever.
Aidon L — Google review
The trail is 10 km not 7,5km as per their boards. Its a moderately to difficult trail not easy to moderate as advertised. Beautiful trail! Though really difficult after you go past the bridge. You really need to be fit and I wouldn't advise to go with children for the long trail coz its really something else. Totally loved every bit of it. Amazing views, its clean and loved every minute of it :)
Noludwe N — Google review
Visiting this picturesque location with my colleagues for a project. Such a quiet, beautiful morning in nature. There was, however, a bit of rubble laying around in one specific spot near the water as though people had been there in the week making a fire. Otherwise, it looks generally well kept and perfect for walks and hikes. It is an easy place to locate, following the road signs and there is an open area for parking (park at own risk).

Nestled along the picturesque beachfront of Port Elizabeth, the South End Museum serves as a poignant reminder of the area's tumultuous past during apartheid. This local gem is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of forced removals that affected its former residents. Through an engaging collection of photographs, newspaper clippings, and recreations of living spaces, visitors can immerse themselves in both the heart-wrenching stories and inspiring triumphs from this era.
The staff and volunteers are welcoming and passionate about the heritage they’re preserving, which makes the experience even more meaningful. A visit to the South End Museum is a must for anyone coming to Port Elizabeth. It’s a place that touches the heart, inspires reflection, and reminds us of the strength of community.
Fatum A — Google review
Great reminder of the evils of apartheid, its impact on individuals, families, communities and the religious, cultural and sport groupings of the area. The rich stories of individuals and families on display. Photographs that highlight the destruction of communities. No cost, a request for a donation.
William P — Google review
A tiny museum capturing the nostalgia of a positively integrated diverse society as reflected in old South End; and raising our awareness to the utter social destruction that occurs when governance is soiled with evil policy making.
Feroza S — Google review
Amazing exhibition. Good reflection on the history of a 1946< South Africa. A lot of the time it seems like only Cape Town was affected, but this was a great reminder of the fact that the entire Country was oppressed by a like minded small group individuals.
Bruce B — Google review
"Please look after this bear, thank you" can be seen on the front of a blood stained shirt that once belonged to a little boy killed by the apartheid police. This item and the rest of the museum is a heart wreching reminder of the struggles and injustices that flourished during the apartheid regime. The museum looks back at the once vibrant and bustling community that was South End. Generations of families and businesses were uprooted and displaced under the notorious Group Areas act. All that remains are the photos and paintings preserved in this museum. The museum is pristine and immaculate and a perfect example of a well run institution. Really worth a visit as a reminder of how far our beautiful country has come and how far we still have to go and to remember the trials and tribulations faced by so many of our people.
Nikki M — Google review
We didn't spend any time in the Museum at all, but went on a guided walking tour of the South End Precinct - an area made desolate by forced removals of the multi cultural communities that lived there in harmony prior to 1950. It's a sad story, but part of South Africa's history. We were ably guided by Colin Abrahams from the Museum with a wry sense of humour and really in depth knowledge of this area. I also had the good fortune to meet an elderly gentleman who had in actual fact lived there as a child. The most notable sites were the two mosques in the area, the soldiers' graveyard, Malay graves, the ruins of St Peter's Church and a 150 year old fig tree. The Museum is open daily, from 09:00 and from 10:00 over weekends. A worthwhile visit to get a good idea of life in Port Elizabeth before and after the implementation of apartheid laws.

PE Hobie Beach parkrun is a popular activity in Port Elizabeth, offering an enjoyable way to start your Saturday morning. The run begins at the Shark Rock Pier and follows the scenic Hobie Beach walkway, passing Something Good Restaurant and the Lollipop Beacon before returning. While erosion and tides may occasionally alter the route, participants appreciate the flat terrain for achieving personal best times. Runners can expect marshals along the path to ensure a well-organized event.
The beach is so clean you can enjoy swimming all day long and it's next to the mall as well. Beautiful view of the ships as well. So peaceful.

Great fun for a Saturday morning. Starting at the large circle pavements by the Shark Rock Pier just outside the Pro Dive surf building. You head east along the path just above the beach, until you reach Something Good Restaurant, then you head onto the beach for about 1km then back up to the path, and back to the start point. Grab a finishing token closer to the KFC section and get scanned out. Lovely morning activity. But a bit crowded for me. As it was a school holiday weekend with over 300 people attending.
Indy F — Google review
I really enjoyed doing the PE Hobie Beach Parkrun which set off from the Shark Rock Pier along the Hobie Beach walkway past Something Good Restaurant and along the way to the Lollipop Beacon and back. It usually incorporates a run along the beach at Pollok Beach, but this didn't happen on my occasion due to beach erosion and spring tide damage. It was also fantastic to run my best time here as i usually run in Johannesburg at altitude and being at sea-level was slightly easier for me. I hope to come back soon.

Visitors can enjoy cricket matches and admire the historical cricket ground with fantastic views of the action. The park offers picturesque surroundings and a bistro and pub for entertainment. While some visitors found the stadium clean and well-maintained, others noted issues with restroom cleanliness and long queues during events. Despite this, many appreciated the overall experience at this majestic venue in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Best cricket atmosphere in South Africa hands down!!! Betway T20 here is absolutely amazing, the atmosphere is electrifying, the brass band is amazing and being from the eastern cape and supporting the home team on home grounds is rewarded with complimentary shirts, bucket hats, flags and all other sorts of goodies apart from entertainment. A visit here is a must!!!

Its unique design mimics a blooming flower with petal-like panels forming an open roof, creating an inviting atmosphere for fans.
I watched a few matches at this stadium. 2010 football world cup. Portugal vs Ivory Cost England vs Slovenia Uruguay vs Germany Rugby 2025 Springboks Vs Italy This stadium is always a vibe!!!! Great atmosphere.....

I had the privilege of watching a game from the presidential suite. The food was really good. Staff were quite friendly, except this one lady who was belligerent on being racist, sending black people away for being under-dressed while she would consider letting others in the same dress-style go in, it was appalling. Otherwise, I really enjoyed watching the game from this vantage point.

The South African Air Force Museum, Port Elizabeth Branch is a repository of vintage planes, helicopters and aviation artefacts that chronicle the history of aviation in South Africa from the 1930s to present. The museum offers free admission but encourages visitors to support its upkeep through donations. Situated along a quiet road, the museum boasts an impressive collection that includes engines, planes, weapons and old uniforms. Visitors can also witness plane restorations at a nearby hanger upon request.

What a hidden gem! Above little museum with super helpful staff that take so much of pride in this museum. Plan to spend at least 3-4 hours exploring all the amazing aircraft and memorabilia. They also have a flight simulator but check when they have someone available to run it before going. Well worth a visit.
Pooben N — Google review
The museum made my day and was a great way to finish off my holiday with one last outing. Everything was mind-blowing - the size of the planes, how complex they are, and all the interesting facts that were displayed next to the planes and parts. I really enjoyed it and found it extremely fascinating. I highly recommend this place. I just wish they would use a real plane hangar to provide more space. Additionally, it would be great if they had something like an R50 to climb into the planes. This would not only help with donations but also boost donations to the place. It's free to enter; they just ask for a small donation to keep the place running.

Some very profound pieces and some extraordinary talent. It is very small though and during my visit there was not much art available to be viewed. Luckily the art on display made up for the lack of quantity. I will visit the museum again next time I am here and am hoping there will be more available to be viewed. Entrance is free so worth a look.

The museum seemed a bit outdated. When we were there, half of the already kind of small museum was closed for renovations, so it was even smaller. But the entry is free, so I think it's okay. And some of the artworks were quite interesting.

Very small. There is quite a few really good artworks but there is also a lot of artworks which in my opinion arent that aesthetically pleasing. And to me one of the big aspects of a work of art is that it should be at least aesthetically pleasing or challenging. But otherwise the gallery was very neat and clean and stereotypical in a good way.

The Start of Sacramento Trail is a popular 8-kilometer return hike from Schoenmakerskop to Sardinia Bay, offering some of the best coastal views in Port Elizabeth. The trail starts at the Skoenmakerskop cannon on Marine Drive and can be customized to varying lengths, ranging from 5km to 8km per leg. With minimal elevation and an easy rating, it provides opportunities for side paths and circular trail experiences.
Breathtaking views is the name of the game here. Beautiful view of the ocean, and is perfect for sunset watching. Wear some comfortable shoes as it's also great for walking.
Siphelele D — Google review
So we started our hike by the board with the map. It was a beautiful sunny day. Firstly, we decided to keep to the left of the trail along the beach. Please be aware that the trail is not well marked. I really think that this trail can benefit from a few more markers along the way because over the rocks, the path disappears. Anyways, just keep going until you see the towering dunes of Sardinia Bay. It's a really gorgeous beach. 😍 (Not really recommended for swimming though.) We were walking slow and it took us just over an hour to walk just under 4Ks. I noticed that there were a lot of dogs on the trail with their owners especially in the beginning. Unfortunately, I saw some trash (plastic bottles, discarded fishing nets) along the way and on the beach which is really disheartening so please don't litter. 💔😢 Overall the beautiful views of the ocean and sounds of the waves makes this, a must do hike. Would definitely do this again.
Sejal — Google review

Wow, simply wow! This is by far my favourite beach as of today. Beautifully clean (4 lovely people were constantly picking up trash), spectacular views, excellent swimming, a lifeguard which is super helpful and friendly (not there the second time we went), dunes (my poor legs) and dog friendly as well. The only negatives I can think of is that the ice-cream by the parking is ridiculously overpriced and that there aren't toilets facilities available. What a pity that this place can't be enjoyed by families. It is stunning, my family really loved it. Unfortunately, the cost is terribly unreasonable. Hike for an adult R65 and child is about R45. For the three of us was R175. We also planned to have a braai, however they charge R105 PER PERSON even though we use only 1 braai, not three, in addition to that we obviously have to take all our own chairs braaiwood etc...overall it would have cost a family of three R500, . We went there, and not a single person was utilizing the area on a stunning Sunday afternoon.. it's utterly ridiculous, and it deprives hard-working South Africans of enjoying this place. Edit They have made the price R65pp for use of the braai facility and R65pp for hike. Hope they could consider the package deal.

A beautiful historic stone fort built in 1799. It located on a hill with a spectacular view of lower city in Port Elizabeth. It is located at the corner of Fort Street. Open Monday - and Friday 08:30am - 15:30pm. It is closed on Saturdays. It also features a small playground for children and scattered benches.

A true relic of the past. It is well worth a look at, if you have the time. You can also get amazing views of the Port Elizabeth harbour. There is however no information centre at Fort Frederick, so getting a good background information before arriving will help.

Historic site with amazing view of the city. It is very interesting to see the bunkers and little rooms built so many years ago. A must see especially for the local Port Elizabethans. Our city is beautiful Gate closes at 430

It's a brick fort with old cannons. There are no signs telling the history of the place. The view is upon the port and some industrial buildings. In both buildings inside the walls there were people looking like hobos who started yelling when we got nearby. Unpleasant experience.

Historical landmark
The Campanile is a significant historical site and memorial erected to commemorate the arrival of settlers in 1820. Located near Port Elizabeth's Strand Street railway station, it offers stunning perspectives of the Harbor and railway lines via its 204 steps. It holds special areas dedicated to Nelson Mandela, celebrating his remarkable dedication to achieving a democratic South Africa over 67 years. Each level of The Campanile boasts additional points of interest, resembling small art galleries or museums.
Built to commemorate the arrival of the 1820 Settlers, this monument in the heart of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, down near the entrance to the Harbour, is an iconic part of Port Elizabeth's history. It is open to the public and it was beautifully revamped in 2017. Whether you're a tourist or a local, this is worth a visit, it has 204 steps, dyand just over 50 metres tall and is easy to climb. The views from the top are absolutely magical. The information and art within the monument is thought-provoking and very well planned. Don't miss the opportunity to experience this special monument to a very special group of humans who contributed richly to our country's history.

Was a great experience, even though the lift doesn't work and the bells haven't wrung in many years. Beautifull view from the top. Pitty it's not maintained better and we can do better to market such an historic landmark.
Barry L — Google review
The tower is there, surrounded by a fence and a very unsafe area, we were pulled aside by a car of heakers who asked us to get out of the car and pay by card 10 ZAR. It was obviously a way to still the card pin and number. Don't get out of the car under the bridge! They followed us from the piramid parking place.
Mihaela C — Google review
Built to commemorate the landing of the settlers in 1820. 204 steps lead to magnificent views of the Harbour and railway lines. Step 67 contains a silver plaque to honor Nelson Mandela and the 67 years he devoted towards a democratic South Africa. Each landing has areas of additional interest and has a feeling of a mini art gallery or museum. Budget friendly as entrance is free. The staff are very friendly and helpful. A hidden gem.
Nikki M — Google review
Not a safe place. Area looks run down, and sometimes lots of unsavory looking people sitting and sleeping at the parking area. The harbor security didn't want me to park with the other vehicles outside the harbor entrance. Looks like part of the historic train station has been burned down. Lift in the Campanile doesn't work, and the bells also doesn't work. Some of the art pieces have been torn apart insidetheCampanile.

Maitlands Nature Reserve, situated near Port Elizabeth, offers a diverse coastal forest, stunning views of the Indian Ocean, and expansive sand dunes. The reserve is located on the outskirts of residential areas and is surrounded by farms and smallholdings. It's a great spot for hiking with various trails offering beautiful mountain and ocean vistas. However, some parts of the trails may be challenging to navigate due to unclear markings. Visitors are advised to hike in groups as some areas are secluded.
It is beautiful. Forest is thick and lush, it was humid, the day before rained so it had muddy patches. Paths are marked well.
Charline C — Google review
This use to be such a wonderful and enjoyable hike, but unfortunately the long route is completely overgrown to the point that you have to crawl at some areas. Will update the review once this issue has been addressed. Would love to see it maintained again.
Stefan A — Google review
A beautiful, very wild trail experience. The setting is unique in many ways, as you trek through very dense bush along the coast. Beware the spiders early in the morning as you dodge the webs built overnight. The trails were well signposted and it really feels 'raw' and completely unspoiled.
Norman V — Google review
The longer hike is quite tough if you're not fit! We took a wrong path at one point. The trail markings were not too great. We encountered a hive of bees, very angry bees! They had made their nest in a tree trunk that you needed cross over. Any bump they attacked with vengeance. Got sung 7 times, fortunately I not allergic. However, for those that are, I don't recommend you attempt that longer trail! Beautiful scenery, though.
Tom D — Google review
Great hiking spot. Did the 9km and it was more challenging than expected. It's got great mountain and ocean views although some parts of the trail aren't properly marked or have clear pathways. I'd definitely recommend going in a group or bringing some pepper spray. The area is quite secluded and we saw some indicators that someone might be living there. Overall it was a good experience, great to hear the birds and revel in nature. I'd definitely do the hike again, just in a larger group.
Kamva F — Google review
Beautiful hiking trial in our own backyard! Awesome trials in the woods with ocean views and nature scenes. Take a quick 3km hike before breakfast or take on the longer 9km trial for maximum views. Really a beautiful area to go and be within nature and forget about the city for a bit.
Wessel B — Google review
The hiking trail starts off absolutely beautiful, with stunning scenery and a peaceful atmosphere. However, as you continue further into the 9km route, the trail becomes very dense with trees and overgrowth, making the path hard to see and follow. There are also areas where you need to crawl under low-hanging branches or through tight spaces, which can be quite tricky and uncomfortable — especially if you're not prepared for it. More signage is definitely needed along the trail, as it’s easy to feel unsure whether you’re still on the right path. We ended up getting lost on the way back, and parts of the return route are genuinely dangerous. One wrong step and you could easily slip down the mountain. The trail has great potential, but safety improvements and clearer markings are really necessary. Proceed with caution, especially if you're not an experienced hiker.

Schotia Safaris Private Game Reserve, located near Addo Elephant National Park, offers an unforgettable safari experience. As the oldest private game reserve in South Africa's Eastern Cape, it boasts a diverse range of wildlife including lions, rhinos, and elephants. The stunning landscapes provide a picturesque backdrop for observing over 40 mammal species in their natural habitat.
We had an unforgettable experience at Schotia Private Game Reserve! We saw an incredible number of animals up close — lions, elephants, hippos, giraffes, and many more. Our guide, Fontaine, was fantastic: knowledgeable, passionate, and full of great stories. He made every game drive both exciting and informative. Our lodge far exceeded our expectations. It was spacious, beautifully furnished, and incredibly cozy. It even had a bathtub in addition to a large shower — perfect for relaxing after a day out in the bush. The food was delicious, and the communal meals around the fire created such a warm, welcoming, and social atmosphere. We truly enjoyed chatting with other guests and the guides in the evenings — it made the whole experience even more special. A particular highlight for us was the thoughtful care and attention shown to my husband, who has a mobility impairment. The staff were incredibly supportive and accommodating. Since he couldn’t climb into the open vehicles, they made sure he had a comfortable front seat next to the driver — which allowed him to fully enjoy the safari experience without any stress. We can’t recommend Schotia highly enough — it was one of the most memorable parts of our trip to South Africa!

Passionate and knowledgeable qualified guids who knows the animals and their behavior very well keep you safe and in awe. Wonderful meal at Lapa before returning home. I would highly recommend booking accommodation at Schotia as well as you don't have to drive at night. Children of all ages welcome.

Really well organized, the dinners are fantastic and sleeping in your own mini campground between freely walking animals like rhino's, hippo's, antilopes, wildebeast was a unique and joyfull experience! Great staff and rangers as well! Don't think twice, just book this experience!!!

We had an amazing time with the full day safari that we booked with Schotia Safaris. First part of the day was a visit to Addo Elephanh park, we were literally surrounded by hundreds of elephants, only 1 meter from our van! A truly unforgettable experience which I would highly recommend to anyone. During lunch BBQ was served with cold beers & wine. In the afternoon we visited Schotia Game Reserve with our guide Zane. This was the best guide you could imagine. Very knowledgeable and funny person which made our tour 1000 times better. In the evening there is a lovely dinner served in the park itself. This day was one of the highlights of our trip!
Miguel B — Google review
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip with Schotia Safaris. Our guide (Edward) was knowledgeable and funny - he ensured we had a pleasant stay. The food was delicious and we enjoyed meeting other guests around the campfire at night - songs were sung and sighting-highlights of the day were discussed. Whilst the accommodation we had booked was rustic, we thought the Bush Camp was well equipped, the beds were comfortable and the experience of sleeping inside a gamepark was thrilling! The guided tours were well led by Edward, whose game vehicle was well-prepared for all weather by having both blankets and ponchos available for when it rained. Schotia’s close proximity to Addo allowed us to enter the National Park for a day as well. Our highlights at Schotia included seeing lions eating a waterbuck, laughing around the fire, the bush walk and of course the great food. Would definitely recommend - a huge thanks to Justin for having us, and Edward for guiding us.

We did the tooth and claw tour with Zane, started 14:00 and ended at 20:00. What a knowledgeable and passionate guide. The vehicle was comfortable and water and a blanket provided at every seat. We saw a huge number of animals which was amazing and we got super close to get some awesome pics. We stopped for refreshments around 16:00 then headed back into the park. At 18:00 made our way to the lappa, a beautiful camp in the middle of the park where dinner was prepared for us. After dinner we did a night drive back to the main entrance. This tour was such a lovely experience and highly recommend Schotia Safaris. They really offer the most remarkable tour and provide you with all the information about all of the animals. Big thank you to Jenny & Peter and of course our guide Zane. We can’t wait to do it again

Nestled in Gqeberha, Grass Roof Farm Stall and Restaurant has quickly become a beloved dining spot since its establishment in 2013. The unique eatery features a distinctive grass-covered roof designed by architect Dal Venables, making it a standout attraction. Emphasizing farm-to-table dining, the restaurant prides itself on using fresh organic produce from their own farm to create hearty and flavorful country-style meals.
Note: this review is for the trail at Grassroof, not the restaurant. I did the R20 hike today with my dog and was pleasantly surprised by how relaxing and well-thought-out it was. The trail is easy to follow, clearly marked, and ideal for a laid-back Sunday morning stroll. There are distance markers along the way, plus a bench and a bin for poop bags... small touches that make a big difference. Although dogs need to be on a lead (something to keep in mind if you prefer off-lead walks), the trail is safe and scenic, and I felt completely comfortable hiking alone. My dog loved it too, even on a leash! We passed through beautiful paddocks and saw horses, which added an unexpected moment of calm and delight to the morning. Highly recommend for solo hikers, dog lovers, and anyone in need of a peaceful reset. 🌞🐾

Located 26 km from the city center, Holmeleigh Farmyard in Port Elizabeth is a popular animal touch farm for children. It offers various activities such as feeding farm animals, petting bunnies, milking cows, interacting with peacocks, riding ponies and taking tractor rides. The farm provides close-up experiences with a variety of animals including goats, sheep, pigs, alpacas, donkeys and more.
Holmeleigh Farm is more than a petting farm, it's become a landmark in this area. We no longer live in the Eastern Cape, but whenever we're in the area, we still make time to visit with the kids. It's one of the best things to do on weekends or holidays as a fam. Feed the animals, take a tractor ride, put the kids on a horse, have a lunch or book a party. You won't ever be disappointed. The prices are beyond reasonable, everything is clean and tidy, staff are friendly and helpful and the kids love it and don't want to leave. I mean, who doesn't like feeding animals and going for a ride on a tractor? We've had a kids party here too, once. It was fabulous! For little ones' there are few venues that can beat the experience. I've also attended a wedding here some years ago which was equally splendid. The lunch offerings are decent and well priced. Ablutions are clean and easy to find. Parking is ample and signage from the road is clear. There is a short gravel road to the venue but this is easily managed with a small car. I look forward to our next stop at this lovely and memorable place in our hearts.

A must-visit indoor activity for tourists with families/couples with an adventurous streak! Perfect outing for cloudy / rainy days! Kids allowed to climb from 7 years up only. They made an exception for our 4 yr old when it was abit quiet. Entrance fee is +-R160 p/person. Closes at 8.30 pm. Kids really enjoyed it. Would definitely recommend and visit again!

It was my first time climbing, and I didn't even feel it! Everyone was super helpful, and soon enough I had gotten the hang of it. It's a great environment where everyone is offering their support, sharing their wisdom and advice, giving climbing tricks and tips. You never feel out of place or as an outsider. Absolutely loved the experience! Will be visiting more frequently. I also attended the Bubbly tasting Yoga experience with Kez and The wineshed. What an amazing time we had, tasting different bubbly wines whilst immersed in deep relaxing yoga ! This is a combo everyone should experience in their lifetime.

My first time at Valley Crag! I had such a lovely time with my friends here!!! Although, I would recommend that you warm up your wrists if you've never been. My wrists were protesting for days. They have climbing shoes for you and chalk for good grip. You have options as to the difficulty level to which you're exposed. You can climb with or without a harness and there are lockers to store your personal effects. You can purchase water for when you're dying from your workout. The staff are extremely patient and encouraging. I will definitely check it out again. Visit their website to choose the type of climbing experience best for you.

Now this is a great place for anyone who wants to climb indoor, from a rank beginner to a Derek Marshall type climber. There is something for everyone to climb. I find them very friendly and quick to offer a belay or simple guidance on what to do. End it off with a quick coffee and chat before departing.

We want to thank the ValleyCrag team for the most memorable 8th birthday party for our son Liam. Everyone enjoyed it so much, all the kids and the parents watching too. Everything was just perfect. The instructor Sihle deserves a 10star rating, he was awesome with the kids and at how he explained everything and even in Afrikaans at times to accommodate everyone. Both instructors were great. The guy hanging upside down received a big applause from all of us, great skills. Thank you again to everyone involved at ValleyCrag. Kind regards Brendon, Marilize & Liam Pattinson

Visitors can also enjoy stunning views at Sardinia Bay and observe African game at Kragga Kamma Game Park.
Nature at it’s BEST! And right here on our doorstep 😊 The river flowing, trees, birds and beautiful greenery and flowers.
Pieter M — Google review
This trail walk 🚶‍♀️ would be awesome and certainly appreciated more if the city dedicated themselves to preserving nature's environment. Vagrants use the reserve for "camping," and the river for "bathroom needs," and this is a huge disappointment 😞 the park needs some TLC with regard to how it is being maintained. No ablution facilities anymore 😢 Walking in a large group is definitely recommended for safety reasons as this is a "free-for-all" reserve!
Rochelle S — Google review
The last time my family and I visited this park was in December 2022 for a picnic. We walked through the park still enjoying the beauty of nature but were thoroughly saddened by the complete lack of maintenance. Alien trees have been removed but nothing had been planted to replace them. There used to be a nursery that provided plants for the reserve. That clearly no longer is happening. We found the exhibit building in the main entrance area which used to display specimens of flora from the park has becone a drug den with used needles scattered on the floor. After our walk we decided to picnic near the parking lot. Let's just say that strange things were happening as vehicles came and went. Not to mention the shenanigans behind the 'drug den building'. The security was questionable and didn't make the park safer. In fact I think that they were party to the goings on there. We decided never to return and waved a sad goodbye to a place that we had spent most of our lives visiting. Our Municipality should be ashamed of themselves for neglecting this beautiful asset and treasure to our city.

One of the oldest houses in Port Elizabeth RSA. Now a museum. It was completed about 1830. The museum illustrates domestic life as it may have been enjoyed in the mid-19th Century. Give yourself enough time to browse each room and drink in the life way back when. A genteel life. Thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Children are encouraged to find items throughout the house. Nestled at the intersection of Russell and Cape Road in Port Elizabeth, the Horse Memorial stands as a poignant tribute to the countless horses that served alongside British soldiers during the South African War at the close of the 19th century. This striking sculpture is not only a significant piece of art but also an important historical marker, honoring those noble animals that lost their lives in service. Visitors can appreciate its beauty and significance daily without any admission fee.
This Hose Memorial is a beautiful aesthetic. During protests there was a point when protesters removed the rider giving the horse water and the poor horse was left standing alone. It's good to see that the rider was brought back.

This is not technically about the Horse Memorial, but about a hawker that can be found close by, only occasionally. I am totally fascinated by this woman - Betty - who occasionally sells mealies from her Merc. So I stopped and had a chat to her today. Turns out she's originally from Zim, but drives through from G-Town when she has stock - which is supplied by local farmers in the area. At R11 for a massive mealie, it's worth popping in to support her efforts. You can find her on the corner of Rink Street and the little slip road opposite the Engen garage in Central - just before the Horse Memorial. Previous reviews on this site have mentioned the dodginess of the area. Please be on the lookout for thugs and hooligans and keep valuables hidden.

Splash Waterworld is a water park that offers thrilling rides and attractions suitable for all ages. They have a variety of slides, including a high slide and super tube for the brave older kids, as well as mini slides and splash pools for the little ones and those who are more cautious. The park has plenty of lifeguard supervision to ensure safety, and it is clean and well maintained. It provides an enjoyable day out for children at affordable prices.
Read a recent 5 star review and decided to try out the super tubes again (20 plus years since I last visited as a child). Took our 3 children (4, 6 & 8 years old) and was thoroughly impressed! Place is in excellent condition. Lots of staff (lifeguards) supervising every ride and making sure everyone is safe, but also making sure others aren’t being idiots and ruining it for everyone else. My 6 & 8 year old went on every slide multiple times (both can swim independently though) and our 4 year old enjoyed the less adventurous slides of which there are 4 that anyone can easily ride by themselves with shallow pools at the bottom of those slides. Cannot recommend highly enough - absolute blast for the whole family from young through to grandparents. Lovely shaded bench areas, open grass area, multiple braai’s, clean ablutions and changing area. Food and drinks available to be bought onsite too. Can imagine it would be a perfect birthday party venue too. Will definitely be back when next visiting PE!

This place has been massively improved. This is a PE icon, and much loved for decades, the owners have made this place world-class. The food is great and well-priced. They have great coffee, loads of chips and snacks, burgers, boerie rolls, toasted sandwiches and loads more. The slides and every part of the grounds and facilities have been improved. It's clean, it's well run, it's fun, it's better than it's ever been. Do yourself a massive favour and visit this place. 😁 They cater for braai's and parties, and there are shaded benches and very comfortable spots to relax. Absolutely brilliant time!!

This experience is affordable for all, and on busy days, it's advisable to bring your own picnic blanket and chairs.
What great fun for all ages. These mini-trains are one of the few attractions left that are still going in PE/Gqeberha after all these years. Only open on the first Sunday of every month, it was great to see so many families out and about enjoying a beautiful Sunday morning.

I went there for a church gathering, and i didn't go on the train by choice, but it was such a lovely picnic spot, even if I didn't go on it had such a nostalgic vibe to it where families could go and have a great time without any distractions like traffic or loud noises, the only thing you could hear was kids laughing parents going around with their children. I would highly visit that people come and visit if they have children for a great break from busy life. The only reason 4/5 is due to the lack of benches under cover for the amount of families there but the grounds were perfect if you had brought a picnic blanket.

The best part for the kids was there wasn’t any high pressure sales. Very nice store! Come check it out! You may need to buy a second suitcase to travel home with. 😉💖

George has a customer service ethic that goes above and beyond. My group and I were amazed at his hospitality while we were in his store in 2022. Then I went and forgot something in town when I left to go back to Canada. Not only did my air bnb host help me out by taking it to Wozanni for me but This amazing man held on to it for me and gave it to my friends that went back there March 2025. Thank you so much for being the great person that you are George! Bless you and your team. Sherry and Tim

So pleased this wonderful place is still open! There's a huge range of beautiful art, wooden animals, bowls, and all sorts of items from Africa, at very reasonable prices. And the young lady who helped me was so friendly and helpful! Definitely worth a visit!
