The Museum of Somerset, situated in the Great Hall and inner ward of Taunton Castle, offers a captivating journey through the history of the county. The castle itself dates back to the 12th century and has undergone various architectural transformations over time. Visitors can explore exhibits that delve into Somerset's rich heritage, including the renowned Frome Hoard of Roman coins discovered in 2010.
This was a surprise stop on a simple Saturday free time. The outside lures you in, a castle but a humble, clean, inviting one. The courtyard was charming and the gift shop was nice. It was fascinating to learn the history of the area I had explored for a while now. The staff were prideful and enthusiastic, helpful, and there was way more to see than expected - the history was rich, rebellious, tragic, charming. I do hope to return during special events and seasons.

It's hard to find anything that's free these days, and it's really hard to find something free that is this good! It was suggested to us by a local when we found ourselves in the area on a wet day. It's a genuinely well thought-out, structured and filled museum with a great balance of information, story, activity and exhibits. Excellent place to spend a few hours, and please be sure to donate a few quid each as you leave.
Aptaim — Google review
A good museum in the castle. Plenty of exhibits. Well designed galleries and a friendly face on arrival. Nice cafe with tables in & out. One of the best attractions in Taunton, and: it's free! ( Donations welcomed )
Ted D — Google review
We went in with low expectations of this museum after we'd be told by someone it was just a hotel. The layout of the museum is very well thought about and we'll put together. With an almost minimalist style throughout style wise it gives you a chance to fully embrace the stocked displays. The staff were really friendly, there was no push for sales or donations (obviously we did a donation anyway). There was a kids walkthrough which kept them full emersed throughout which cost £1. It took about an hour and 20 minutes I think to get around, looking at everything but stopping to read about the things that we found particularly interesting. I'm sure you could spend more time if you truly wanted to but this was good for us. I would say if you are visiting Taunton for the day, it's definitely worth a walk around. Particular highlights for me were the revolution section as I was completely unaware of this and the heart box and the very large shoes.
Danny K — Google review
A wonderful museum with its own history. Nice staff. Entrance is free, but you can donate from £5. You can also drink coffee and have a snack on the museum grounds.
Olha A — Google review
We went into the museum simply to get out of the rain and ended up staying about three hours. The displays were extremely interesting and very professional and informative in presentation. Entrance price was by donation. I would highly recommend this hidden gem if you are in the Taunton area.

Very interesting and informative of the Somerset area with lots of interesting fossils and artifacts. Well worth a visit and they do not charge for entry although do suggest donation which we were more than happy to pay.

Found myself in Taunton with a few hours to spare, so thought I would visit. Really glad I did. A fantastic museum rich in content, and full of surprises. Staff were friendly and helpful and the cafe offered good food at reasonable prices. Even if you have lived in Somerset all your life you will discover something new.

St Mary Magdalene Church is a 16th-century Anglican church located in Somerset, boasting an impressive 50-meter-tall spire. This grand Perpendicular Gothic monument was funded by the local wool trade and features elements dating back to the 12th century. The church underwent reconstruction in the 1860s, with many of its windows and statues reflecting Victorian influence. Visitors can admire the tallest church tower in Somerset and explore its ornate interior.
The church has a warm welcome. Visitors feel inner peace as they walk around whether lighting a candle, for prayer at the altar, shopping for paraphernalia or just enjoying the lovely light meals in the coffee shop

I love it here. Beautiful Medieval Church. Close on 1000 years old. Very peaceful with a lovely cafe. Volunteers run the cafe and the array of homemade cake are to die for. All too tempting as it’s part of The Church. Free entry. But cafe has hours of opening and closing. It’s also a nesting place for Peregrine Falcons. There is a webcam so you can watch them. There’s a clutch of 4 eggs now. And the parents taking it in turns. Do visit.

Two lovely ladies standing guard inside. It's late, I'm tired. Please refer to previous houses of the holy reviews. Now look at the pictures. Glory be to him/her on high.

Wow what a Church. The history is fantastic the touching of the pinkish pillars date from 1308 was very moving for me. What those stone pillars have seen over the the 700 odd year is quite incredible. If only they could talk. Everything within the Church is mind-blowing. This is English History at it's best. If you get a chance to see it for yourself you will not be disappointed. Wow, totally amazing. A must see.

Amazing church to look inside. Lots of military remembrances in the soldiers corner. Sir Robert Gray , Peregrine Falcons nest to see , and the St Mary Magdalen. Plus a very good coffee shop and staff very welcoming. Thank you 🙏

Visited here today during a trip to Taunton. Extremely welcoming without being overbearing lady greeted us and gave us a brief overview of the building. No pressure to donated upon entry. Coffee area and small gift shop inside the church. Stunning stained glass windows with wonderful detail. The wooden ceiling with angels each holding a different shield was a beautiful piece of art work in its own right. We were then invited to view via remote video link peregrine’s who were sitting on four eggs in a nest on top of the tower!..overall well worth a visit. Disability access throughout and disabled toilets / gender neutral toilet available. Parking could be in a public car park close to the church but this is quite small so I expect would fill up quickly so other public car park/s might need to be used. Pleasing grounds which are well kept around the building

This is a lovely old church, that has been at the heart of the town for a millennium. Recently given the title of Minster to reflect its importance. I've been before for a number of musical events, but on this occasion, it was to see the Gaia exhibition. I had missed the Moon exhibition previously, so was really keen not to miss this one. It didn't disappoint! The appearance of the globe in the middle of the church is quite stunning. You easily imagine how the astronauts felt as they looked down upon the "good Earth" from so far away. I actually found it a bit surprising that so many people didn't recognise the land masses. The cloud formations obscure quite a few coastlines, but even so, I thought that there was sufficient to allow people to identify continents, if not countries. I was particularly pleased to see some young children at the exhibition. This is their world too. As part of the event, they have a small display to promote local conservation efforts. It's worth checking out, as different groups are working hard with little publicity and they deserve a bit more credit. It's also worth pointing out that there is a Peregrine Falcon nest on the roof of the church, and the eggs hatched in the last few days. A live camera feed to a screen in the corner of the church allows you to watch without disturbing them. It's very popular!

Hestercombe House & Gardens is a historical gem located just outside Taunton, boasting three centuries of world-class garden design. The collaboration between renowned garden designer Gertrude Jekyll and architect Edwin Lutyens has resulted in an exquisite landscape featuring temples, lakes, and formal beds. The 16th-century manor house served as the headquarters of the British 8 Corps during World War II and now houses a contemporary art gallery.
Our first visit to Hestercombe. It's been on our list to visit for ages. Very lovely staff at the entrance. Explained everything we needed to know. The gardens were lovely. Unfortunately it's been so dry that they are looking a bit parched. It didn't spoil our enjoyment though. Map is easy to read. Be aware that a lot of the trails are quite hilly and rough under foot so not suitable if you have mobility issues. There are however trails that are suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs etc. We didnt use the café as we brought our own food. The café is independently run. All in all a lovely few hours wander.

Beautiful spot, a really lovely garden to walk around. Would definitely go back. 5 stars for the garden, 3.5 for the food. We went to the cafe, only a few vegan options, I have a very nice pea soup, the bread though was very dry. Husband had beetroot falafel salad and he was sure they were cauldron (brand) ones, not freshly made. Overall though, nice spot for lunch, good service and fairly priced

Our visit to the Hestercombe House and Gardens was a good morning visit just off M5. Currently being renovated it still offers an insight into the past of the house and previous uses, ground floor and couple rooms upstairs available, outside a good garden and walk through woods. Grounds a little parched after heatwave ( End of August) and need of TLC. Good restaurant on site with nice meals.

Hestercombe House and Gardens is a beautiful place to visit. The gardens are stunning, with small houses, lakes, and hidden paths through the woods. It was lovely to wander with friends before heading to the café for delicious food. The staff were very friendly, and I would highly recommend visiting.

Called in on our way home from Cornwall as it breaks the journey up. Only 10 minutes from junction 25 of the M5 and fairly straightforward to get here. We arrived around 11am and it was quite busy but still able to get a space.. Headed to cafe and had a nice pot of tea and cheese scone..(scone nice and warm but butter was too hard to spread, needed to soften first).scummy though. We then visited the house and we're greeted by some friendly ladies who gave us some information sheets to read on the brief history of the house. Most of the rooms are empty from furniture but their are display cabinets with items to view and loads of pictures and history facts to read. We walked the gardens at the front of house and then headed round past the orangery and walked all the way to the top of vast rear gardens and back down the other side which is higher up and you can look down from above the water cascade ,which unfortunately this time had no water running down for full impact..quite rough and steep in places but not too bad .
Paul S — Google review
Friends have recently moved to Somerset and found this gem. They have joined so we got half price entry! There are so many delights to find along the well-kept trails and the formal gardens are absolutely stunning. We were very lucky with the weather as it was a beautiful sunny day. There's not an awful lot to see in the house, but it was obviously grand in it's day. The gardens are most certainly the highlight. Stunning views across the county.
Jennifer M — Google review
Hestercombe is magical - I can't think of any other way to describe it. The grounds are wonderful - the gardens designed by Gertrude Jekyll are stunning at the moment. The air is filled with the scent of Wisteria which has the largest and most prolific blooms that I've ever seen. The woodland Estate is full of Bluebells, cow parsley, wood violets, birds singing and so many shades of fresh green of glorious trees. A place of joy and calm 😍😍
Karen F — Google review
We enjoyed our day out at Hestercombe and our dog felt welcome too. The cafe served a good variety of food that well priced. My partner had the falafel salad and I had the first finger open sandwich that were well presented and tasty. We went back after seeing the beautiful gardens for hot drinks and tasty cake. You can go to the cafe without going into the gardens if you wish

Somerset County Cricket Club, established in 1882, is located at the County Ground with a capacity of over 6500 and a dedicated family stand. The club competes in Division One of the County Championship and has been one of the top first-class cricket teams in England for the past decade. In addition to hosting league games, the ground also hosts 20/20 matches and international fixtures for both men's and women's teams.
Beautiful venue to watch cricket. The ground was looking beautiful on sunny spring day. Good price for day ticket but a lack of variety of food outlets limits your choice.

We went to watch the double header women's & mens T20 we picked seats in rear of Trescothick lower stand to keep out of the sun as long as possible. Good view of game nice clear informative scoreboard and good entertainment throughout game and by a band between matches. Only disappointment price of drinks and food with queues needed a longer break between innings.

What a great atmosphere, Been for both men’s and women’s T20 and an England words ODI and everyone were have seen some great cricket. Food and drink very expensive though!

Something was wrong but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I took a picture, walked a few yards..... and stopped to think, trying to determine the problem. Still...... nothing. Next picture, walk on, pondering my apparent dilemma. What on earth was it? Then it occurred to me. I'd travelled all the way to Taunton to watch ⌚️ a game of cricket but there was no game to see. I stood and watched the groundsmen for a few hours instead.
Bill R — Google review
A beautiful day in the West Country, a well attended and great day's cricket, yet most of the catering outlets were closed. Possibly this was because the ground authorities thought it would all be over by lunchtime (this was day three) but no, the game lasted untill stumps on the fourth day. Sedgemoor Services did a roaring trade as Worcester supporters north up the M5. Loved the cricket and the view from high behind the wicket, but this famous old ground could do better.
Nigel B — Google review
Great place to watch cricket small ground lots of seating options. Well versed staff and happy to help, good cricket shop as well. Can be a bit patchy on food options when not a big event. Easy to access by train or road. Lots of interaction on vitality blast days and Metro cup events. Juniors are well catered for and made to feel welcome. Players are all approachable and happy to interact with the crowd. Great atmosphere at all times.

Good viewing. But buy a ticket via web site as you can’t get in except by the main gates where you can pay , other entrances are tickets only ( bar code scanner) and cheaper then turning up on the day. Refreshments are good and easy to find no cash card only. You can bring own snacks etc.

St James' Church in Taunton is believed to be one of the oldest churches in the area, with a history dating back to the early 12th century. The church features remarkable highlights such as a beautifully carved 15th-century pulpit and another from 1633. Visitors can also find the grave of Joseph Whidbey, an engineer and explorer known for his involvement in Captain George Vancouver's expedition.
I've never been inside before. Beautiful stained glass windows. Another magnificent Taunton church building

Beautiful church. But the best part was the organist who took us through to show us how everything worked. He was so proud of everything. Such a lovely man. Didn't get his name but thankyou.

Finally I've found a house of the holy which was doing something wonderful for the community. Rip out the pews and fill the spaces with people taking blood for those who need it. Even had a little place for the kiddies to play at the back. We still had the windows, wood and stone but three cheers for the blood transfusion service.

Due to my child having autism, we couldn’t enjoy our family meal due to unsociable hours of bell ringing. The St James Church clearly have no regards for people with disability. Extremely disappointed.

I have only ever been here to donate blood so I turn up here every 4 months or so and will continue to do so as long as the donations remain there. Its a very nice church. If ever I was to try out the whole religious thing and attend a church.. Don't see why this one wouldn't do!

The school it self isn't so bad but the head is not understanding in anyway.... he is fast to accuse people and put a label on a person ie a bully. Yet he feels it appropriate to throw lines at you like "after all the help we have given your family". The school used to be a wonderful place but now sadly it's not bulling had gone up, there is a really bad headlice problem school wide! And supporting children with extra needs can at times be overlooked by almost 5 years! And 2 years of bulling with physical marks as proof... year 6 is a terrible year the children are made to feel as if there best efforts are not good enough and are always pushed for more and more, the amount of homework is a joke.... if you choose to send your child here I would keep a close check on there emotional state as this is something that the school struggle to support with after they have caused it..

Taunton: The Beige Heart of Somerset Taunton is the sort of town you pass through on the way to somewhere more interesting, then immediately forget — like an unwanted layover in the middle of a conversation. It’s the kind of place that feels like it’s permanently sighing. If towns had personalities, Taunton would be a middle-aged man in a fleece jacket saying, “Well, it’s not much, but it’s home,” while stirring instant coffee in a chipped “World’s Best Dad” mug. To be fair, Taunton tries very hard. It has a castle (sort of), a cricket ground (which people are weirdly passionate about), and a shopping centre that bravely insists on existing despite all available evidence suggesting it shouldn’t. The town is best described as “adequate”. It’s not bad. It’s not good. It’s just there — like a filler episode in a TV series no one asked for. Let’s begin in the town centre, where the architecture swings wildly between medieval remnants, post-war concrete slabs, and a few panicked attempts at modernisation that look like someone let an AI redesign a Wickes catalogue. There’s a pedestrianised high street that looks like it gave up halfway through its own regeneration project. You’ll find all the usual suspects: Greggs, Boots, a suspicious number of vape shops, and at least three charity shops per square foot. It’s the Bermuda Triangle of middling retail. Cricket, of course, is Taunton’s big claim to fame. The County Ground is the town’s pride and joy, and on match days the place hums with the sound of gentle applause and overpriced cider. It’s the kind of sporting event where someone in chinos will discuss spin bowling with the intensity of a hostage negotiator. Whether or not you care about cricket is irrelevant — in Taunton, it’s a lifestyle choice, like owning a Labradoodle or developing an opinion on compost. There’s also the castle, now a museum, where you can marvel at ancient relics, medieval weaponry, and wax figures that look like they’re plotting to murder you in your sleep. It’s oddly charming in a low-budget historical drama sort of way. Outside, you’ll find a quaint little garden and a gift shop that sells jam and anxiety in equal measure. Taunton markets itself as the gateway to Exmoor, which is a bit like being the porch of a very nice house. Yes, it leads to beautiful countryside and windswept moors, but that doesn’t mean you want to hang out on the doormat. You use Taunton as a launchpad, not a destination. It’s Somerset’s departure lounge. Culturally, it’s… well, it exists. There’s an arts centre somewhere, occasionally showing plays written entirely in metaphor and performed to audiences of seven. The library is solid, if you enjoy the smell of beige carpet and the low murmur of pensioners Googling ailments. There are some lovely parks, too — Vivary Park, for example, where you can watch toddlers chase pigeons while teenagers vape ominously in the bushes. And the nightlife? Picture three Wetherspoons, a suspiciously sticky nightclub, and a kebab van called something like “Wrap Me Tender”. It’s not so much a scene as it is a situation. Friday night in Taunton feels like everyone in town simultaneously decided to drink through the pain of their postcode. Still, there’s something endearingly inoffensive about Taunton. It’s the hometown equivalent of a supermarket lasagne: serviceable, familiar, and occasionally a bit soggy around the edges. People are friendly, the countryside’s close, and you can usually get a seat on the train. It’s a fine place to raise children, or slowly become one of those people who owns an allotment and says “ooh, that’s come up nice” about courgettes. So, if you find yourself in Taunton — lost, possibly, or being punished by fate — don’t despair. Buy a sausage roll, nod politely at some cricket, and try not to make eye contact with the seagulls. You won’t remember much about your visit, but you won’t be traumatised either. And in Taunton, that’s about as good as it gets.
PF — Google review
Pleasant clean shopping arcade. Has a few good independent shops here too which is nice to see. Many shopping in smaller towns suffer from long term vacant units. Thankfully Taunton's Orchard isn't one of those. In the only empty one I did see they had implemented a clever idea by covering the front with a full size print of a florist shop.

With 44 uniquely designed bedrooms to choose from, including garden rooms, castle rooms, and cozy doubles and twins, there's something for everyone.
Went with my daughter, while she was pregnant, let them know, and they went out of their way to accommodate her. Absolutely first class experience. Yes it is expensive, but well worth it . They even gave us a doggy bag, for things she hadn't managed to eat. Tea was in china cups, and proper leaf tea in the teapot...so dont forget to use the tea strainer...lol.

Two years ago my husband and I had the most delicious afternoon tea at the castle. I now live in Gloucestershire but my friend lives in Minehead and whilst visiting her for her birthday I wanted to surprise her with an afternoon tea. I have to say: the afternoon tea which was served on Tuesday 15th of August, was VERY disappointing ! Although the websites promise "delicious homemade cakes and pastries" there were for each of us 1 dry peach cake, 1 raspberry macaron (which was not fresh), 1 chocolate macaron and 2 massive scones (probably to make up for the lack of other nice things) ... NO selection of cakes , NO pastries. I reached out to the Castle via email with pictures attached and although I received a reply, it was defensive and rather more an aknowledgement than an effort to make it right. I have attached a picture of what we received - this was for the 2 of us. If you look at the stand: massive scones (= fillers) and only 1 cake and no pastries or mousse ... If this picture was on their website, I would NOT have booked. The Afternoon Tea was missing all the finesse of an "indulgent afternoon tea" (as described on the website) and in my opinion this was not worth the £49.90 I paid for it. I was embarrassed towards my friend as this was my treat for her birthday. The service was very good: we were welcomed and the girl who served us was very friendly - based on the food, I would have given a 0 star review but because of the friendly service I made it a 1 star.

Went to Monkton Elm for coffee today and the service was terrible. Went up to the counter to order 3 members of staff stood there 2 young girls looked at me and ignored me I can except that maybe it wasn’t their job but a good morning would of been nice eventually an older lady served me. To top it all this is what we were served.☹️ If this is what you call service I was not impressed. Uh Thank you for your reply but I didn’t mention about having to wait it was about manners and being respectful I would never have worked anywhere and totally ignored a customer just a simple smile or a good morning or to be told someone will be with you in a while would be acceptable not to be totally blanked . Also you never mentioned the state of the coffee we were served did you think that was okay at least bring a napkin to mop it up or replace it. I wish you luck with teaching your new staff how to be polite to the customers I would have thought that would be common sense .

Just popped in for some food. 11:25 at the till to order, having a dog with us my partner went to order but wasn't sure of the table number, was assured we could still order breakfast at that time. By the time she confirmed the table it was 11.32 and was told we couldn't order breakfast. Looking at the menu the next main menu states 12:00 onwards. Can't be bothered with poor politics you have just lost my custom and will ensure I shop elsewhere in the future

Woodlands is so unique and a fantastic wedding venue so many photo opportunities as well as friendly helpful staff with great food and bar you cant go wrong!

We love Woodlands Castle, it is situated on the outskirts of Taunton, Somerset and is the perfect location for a country wedding. We had the privilege of photographing a wedding here recently which is a dream come true for the both of us as it is such a beautiful setting for wedding photographs. Set in private grounds with the prettiest 17th century country house, beautiful parkland for photographs (and the fact we live 10 minutes away!) makes this one of our favourite venues in Somerset! The staff were friendly and very professional and made sure the wedding day ran smoothly, we look forward to returning again soon to photograph another wedding.

My favourite place for a meeting. Have visited here many times now with my company Lifetime Training, including today ( Jess looked after us very well - thank you). Lovely dining room area suitable for a meeting of 20 or so people, and lots of smaller spaces that can be used for groups/working space. The beautiful environment inspires relaxed, positive, and productive meetings. The lunches offered are simple but enjoyable and much better than the limp sandwiches you find on offer elsewhere. Totally recommend.

My husband and I wanted a church wedding but chose this incredible place to hold our wedding reception. They were magnificent from start to finish! Our personalised wedding planner, Bella, and the team there could never do enough to help us in the lead up to the big day. They tailored everything we wanted to our hopes and our budget and made us feel that we were their only clients because they were so attentive! On the day itself, traffic meant we were running late from the church, this wasn't a problem. The itinerary for the day was orchestrated with smooth ease, the different meals for children, vegetarians etc. were sorted without a second glance. They even catered for my long-term allergies with no extra cost or fuss. You'd imagine that would come with a hefty price tag but another amazing thing about this beautiful place is that it is really a steal compared to the other venues around and there are no hidden charges, everything clearly laid out for you! It was the best day of our lives!!! Thank you Woodlands Castle!

Had our wedding here September 2016 and the amazing but the staff really made sure it was a day to remember. Beautiful location and grounds that all our guests enjoyed and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Especially Roxanne our wedding coordinator, she was fantastic, especially as we had only 13 weeks to plan! Thank you Woodlands for the best day ever!
Romy C — Google review
Nice venue but utterly abysmal with approx 100 diners waiting carried out by only 4 youngsters so the last table was served about an hour after the first! Quality was non existant with my Mushroom risotto consisting of about 3 chopped mushrooms in a good mush of rice with a tasteless paper like attachment. I had to complain three times before anyone came and by that time the pudding of solidly baked tart with a minute scraping of filling with a single raspberry had arrived. My dinner probably cost about £2 and the cost was £40!

Went in to this costa and didn't feel it was at all up to the standards I have experienced with many other Costas. The first issue was the girl serving was joking around with her colleagues rather than paying attention to her customers and dealing with our order. After she put the tea and coffee on the tray we had to remind her about our pastry. I went to the toilet and it was filthy. What is it about the big corporate companies and their inability to provide clean toilets?
Lorraine W — Google review
It’s definitely gone downhill because as you come in, you’ve got Caspers on the right and then an empty shop next to that and then you’ve got like a silver lady which is really good and a Warhammer shop the savers shop a charity shop that Sainsbury’s entrance and then costa at the bottom

I was at a conference at Taunton Racecourse recently and have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Loads of parking, easy to get to, and just a nice change from the usual hotel setup. The rooms were decent – spacious, well kitted out – and everything ran smoothly thanks to the staff, who were genuinely helpful all day. Food and drinks were absolutely fine too, no complaints there. Even though it’s a racecourse, it worked really well as a venue. The views were a nice bonus, and the whole day just felt relaxed and well put together. Would happily go back for another event.

Riverside Church is a charismatic and welcoming place located near the town center with accessible facilities for disabled individuals. It offers various activities throughout the week, including children's groups and a card game club. The church is known for its friendly atmosphere and follows the teachings of Jesus Christ. Visitors can expect warm hospitality and free worship sessions featuring flags and dance. Additionally, it provides a supportive environment for activities like Powerhoop sessions.
this is a very good building. The toilets, while sometimes a bit faulty, are very clean, and there's rarely any mess inside any of the toilets from what I have seen. The Hand Dryers, however, are placed in a very odd spot, meaning if you walk past it, they could set off, and is the only option for drying your hands if you wash them in the bathrooms themselves. However, there is paper towels for drying up hands in the building, so while tedious, is perfectly understandable. Overall, I would rate these toilets an 8/10 for cleanliness and ease of usage. the only reason it's not a 10/10 is because of accessibility. if you're sensitive to loud noises, like I am, hand dryers are awkward at best and painful at worst.
