Luna Park Melbourne is a historic amusement park located in St. Kilda, a vibrant beachside suburb in Melbourne. Since its opening in 1912, this enduring attraction has been captivating both locals and tourists with its blend of old-school charm and modern rides. The park's star attraction is the Great Scenic Railway, the world's oldest continually operating roller coaster, offering stunning views of Port Phillip Bay.
Oldest still operating Luna Park in the world! Love it! I really love the classic scentic railway! A roller coaster that run on momentum, with the right level of excitement and stunning scenery along the track! Riding on scentic railway is my most romantic moment in Melbourne!
Isa W — Google review
Overall, the amusement park makes a good impression, offering a variety of interesting attractions. However, in 4-5 hours, we were only able to go on two rides. The queues for each attraction ranged from 1 to 3 hours. Even in the afternoon, the wait for a simple slide for a small child was 40 minutes. I queued for my child, but he wasn't allowed to go ahead. Therefore, queuing for someone else seems impossible. I would rather call this place a zoo than an amusement park. Unfortunately, such a large number of visitors undoubtedly has a negative impact on the experience of this historical site. I understand that even on weekdays it can be crowded, and during school holidays, it’s likely a real nightmare. It would be sensible to consider the option of selling tickets online and to have separate hours for tourists. After all, standing in line for two hours is certainly very exhausting! Moreover, it’s completely impossible to step away to the toilet for fear of losing your spot.

🎡 Luna Park Melbourne is one of the city’s most famous amusement parks, but its design may not appeal to everyone. The entrance features the iconic giant clown face with a wide open mouth, which some find creepy and unsettling rather than fun. Personally, I found the design not so nice and a bit scary, so I decided not to enter. While the park is popular with families and thrill-seekers, the overall look might not be inviting if you’re sensitive to bold or unusual designs.
Min M — Google review
Luna Park Melbourne is fun if you’re looking for a throwback, carnival-style amusement park. The heritage roller coaster is a standout, and the park has a quirky, vintage vibe that families and tourists might enjoy. It’s a great spot for kids or for those wanting a more laid-back experience—not a high-adrenaline thrill park. However, some of the rides feel outdated, and the pricing can feel steep considering the size and condition of the park. Queues get long on weekends, and a few rides are sometimes closed without clear notice. It’s charming in its own way, but don’t expect modern theme park standards. Still worth a visit if you’re in the area, but probably more for the atmosphere and photos than for the rides themselves.

Luna Park Melbourne – A Timeless Experience of Joy and Connection I recently visited Luna Park Melbourne with a group of friends, and the experience was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we arrived, the energy of the park was contagious, vibrant, welcoming, and full of life. The blend of classic rides and modern attractions created a perfect balance of nostalgia and excitement. The staff were friendly and professional, ensuring a smooth experience for every visitor. Beyond the fun and laughter, what stood out most was the sense of community and shared joy that Luna Park inspires. Moments like these are a reminder that great experiences go beyond entertainment; they connect people, spark joy, and create lasting memories.

Loved it for a great value family day out! Took my husband and 2 kids for a whole day for $170, with unlimited rides. Bought our own lunch and snacks along and stayed from opening at 11am to 5pm. All staff very friendly and helpful and we all felt safe and free to choose our adventure!

Spent an incredible Halloween night there. Lits of animations, super cool music, great atmosphere. A great balance between scary and fun that is really worth it.

Just how I always remembered it! Lines can be long but the rides are just as fun. Food not too overpriced.

St Kilda Botanical Gardens, established in 1857, cover 16 acres and offer a more intimate and community-oriented experience compared to the larger Royal Botanic Garden. The gardens feature a variety of attractions including a rosary, flower beds, exotic trees, a pond, a conservatory, a rotunda, playgrounds, and even a giant chessboard with tables.
The botanical gardens is a beautiful place to stop. I love the rose garden and the greenhouse. Open early closed after dark. Public toilets Great for gatherings or kids parties Free parking on the street
Sophie D — Google review
The Gardens was so wide and joyful. The rose garden was beautiful, and so was the conservatory! It was definitely the sunny day that made the visit better.
Cherry J — Google review
Explored the Gardens on an early Spring afternoon on a weekday. Relatively quiet. A handful of other visitors either walking a dog or pushing a kid in a stroller. The conservatory was open and has a nice collection of ferns and two ponds with fish in them. A fenced bee area in the far end of the Gardens. Several flower beds with blooming poppies. The rose garden had just begun growing new leaves but no flowers as yet. There is a glass house open on Saturday afternoons from 3pm to 5pm and plant sales. Dogs are welcome for on lead walking only. No off leash areas and did not come across a water tap with a drinking bowl for dogs. No dog waste bag dispenser too. Walked past the toilet block but did not use. A flat walking terrain with well maintained paths covered in gravel. A large pond with a sculpture of a man holding an umbrella. A nice bamboo mini forest.
Ria — Google review
A nice, well kept Botanical Gardens. Good walking tracks around the gardens. A conservatory is there to look at too. Good to go for a walk through. Peaceful place.
Christine B — Google review
A truly beautiful botanical garden in St Kilda. We love visiting when the weather is good. The gardens feature lovely plants and flowers, a large central water fountain, and a rainforest conservatory, making it a great place to take little ones for a walk and explore nature.
Wanyue F — Google review
Beautiful community botanical garden with many varieties of plants and flowers. The rose garden section is worth the visit. The colourful parakeet can be easily seen eating fruits.
Carrie L — Google review
Not huge in size but good place to stroll around and picnic if you are near this area. Not somewhere you need to travel a distance purposely for.
Pui L — Google review
I visited the St Kilda Botanical Gardens to film a video for my YouTube channel — and honestly, the place blew me away! The environment is just beautiful. When the sun hits, the green grass shines brilliantly, and the central fountain looks magical with the sunlight reflecting off the water. Sometimes when the clouds pass, the fountain almost seems to pause — it’s such a peaceful moment to watch. In the southern part of the garden, there are a few birds that look like parrots. They’re not shy at all and often come quite close. There’s also a lovely big tree inside the garden — I don’t know its name, but it’s absolutely stunning. Every now and then, an elderly man comes by to feed the birds and pigeons. I spoke to him out of curiosity, and he said he’s been feeding them here for years. Watching the pigeons gather and those two parrots fly down to eat is really heart-warming. I’d definitely love to come back again someday — hopefully for my next video shoot. Truly a peaceful and inspiring spot in Melbourne!

St Kilda beach is a popular city beach in Melbourne, known for its boardwalk and the St. Kilda Pier. It offers various water sports activities and is a favorite spot for sunbathing, swimming, windsurfing, and kiteboarding. The beach is easily accessible from Melbourne CBD via public transport and provides safe and calm waters ideal for families with kids.
Nice place to walk, relax, and watch the sunset. Plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby. The pier is great and you might even see penguins at night. Can get busy on weekends but still a good spot to chill.

Beautiful sandy beach with clear water and amazing sunset views. Perfect for walking, taking photos, and picnics. St Kilda Beach is stunning! Definitely coming back 🏖️ #TravelAustralia
Litthideth K — Google review
The beach itself is alright. Not the prettiest but a decent place if you want to cycle or jog along this beach. I would imagine it will be a much better experience if the sky wasn't gloomy :') anyway I came here for the wild penguins and this place is convenient with tram. Easily accessible
Pui L — Google review
🏖️ St Kilda Beach in Melbourne is one of the city’s most popular and beautiful coastal destinations, perfect for a day of relaxation by the sea. On a sunny day, the brilliant blue sky blends seamlessly with the sparkling blue water, creating a breathtaking and serene view. The long sandy stretch is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, or taking a leisurely walk along the shore while enjoying the fresh ocean breeze. The St Kilda Pier offers stunning panoramic views of the bay and is a great spot to catch a magical sunset. Around the area, you’ll find plenty of cafés, restaurants, and ice cream shops, making it the perfect place to grab a snack or drink after a stroll. The lively vibe, paired with the peaceful sound of the waves, makes it a wonderful escape from the city bustle while still being just a short tram ride from Melbourne’s CBD. Whether you want to relax on the sand, take in the scenic views, or explore the vibrant nearby attractions, St Kilda Beach offers the perfect mix of natural beauty and coastal charm. 🌊☀️

St Kilda Beach in Melbourne is an amazing area to visit! The beach is beautiful and clean, with soft, spotless sand. You can even spot penguins there—such a lovely experience. It’s also the best place for running, with fresh air and a relaxing atmosphere all around.
Andri S — Google review
Bit cold during winter but beautiful calm beach with a few dining places close by on the esplanade. Gorgeous on a summers day, and there’s usually a bit more ‘atmosphere’ at the local eateries and bars. Recommend visiting in the warmer months to get the best experience!
Genevieve M — Google review
I came to St Kilda Beach around 2 PM with a friend from uni — and even though it was my second time here, it felt like the first. There’s something about this place that instantly slows you down. The cold winter air, the quiet beach, the open view of the ocean — it makes you stop and breathe. Unlike when I visited in December (when it was packed and full of wild energy), this time it was calm. Peaceful. Almost therapeutic. We walked slowly, clicked some photos, had deep chats, and just existed for a while. I noticed people walking alone with their headphones in, some listening to audiobooks, others jogging or just watching the waves. It made me realize — everyone here was doing something to reconnect with themselves. To relax. To think. That’s what I love about this place: it’s more than just a beach. It’s a reminder to pause. A place where you can let go of the pressure, the deadlines, the overthinking. Even in silence, it feels like the sea is talking to you. Whether you’re with a friend or alone, St Kilda Beach is the perfect spot to reflect, reset, and feel human again. Highly recommend coming here in winter if you want peace — no crowd, no noise, just the sound of the waves and your thoughts.

If you're looking for a unique souvenir or handmade artwork, the St Kilda Esplanade Market is the place to be. With over 140 stalls, this well-known Sunday market offers a diverse selection of items created by local artisans, including paintings, jewelry, designs, and candles. Located along The Esplanade in St Kilda, the market provides a picturesque setting with views of St Kilda Beach and Port Phillip Bay.
Located on The Upper Esplanade, St Kilda, Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺 I have been about 3 or 4 times to these markets. I love them 😍. Every time I come to Melbourne, I never fail to come here. I always love the great range of handcrafted souvenirs, gifts, arts, clothing and other items. The market is held every Sunday from 10.00am. There’s always something new to look at. The markets has been running since 1970 . There’s some food trucks to grab something to eat and drink. It’s not really a large market but it’s still nice to come have a look if you’re coming to St Kilda. There’s a direct tram ride (No 16 or 96 tram) from Melbourne CBD to get to the market. It takes about 15 -20 minutes. Very easy. The views over the ocean are amazing. You can also walk around to the shops where there’s some really nice shops and if you want a nice meal, there’s plenty of places to pick from. If you wanted, you could take a walk along the beach and to the wharf. It’s a really cool walk. Overall, I really like these markets, always makes for a great day in St Kilda. A big Thumbs up!!! 👍👍👍
Nerine C — Google review
The hustle and bustle is heavily dependent on the weather. And i guess it also dictates the better vendors. The nicer days (around 18-25 degrees) is where it's at. Good, chilled vibes with Stkilda beach as it's backdrop.
Sam S — Google review
EDIT: More stalls open as weather improves. Go on Sundays. Opens 10am. EDIT 2025: Now with Skywheel. Only half open probably due to Covid-19. Day was pleasant. Plenty jewellery stalls.
Tony W — Google review
the market has a nice variety of stalls which include homewares, food, art etc. We got Breaky and had a nice walk. The market is pet friendly with plenty of dogs on leash and spots for the dogs to have a drink. Lisa bakes had great cookies 🍪
Taylah C — Google review
Ok small see side stalls but very touristy and they start closing. An hour earlier than advertised hours on google maps so do go earlier. Still a worthy weekend stroll on nice sunny day only for visual appeal.
C Y — Google review
We took a morning walk at St Kilda beach on the 9th day of our Melbourne vacation and noticed that the iconic St Kilda Pier is closed for renovation and upgrading. After that we visited the weekend market. The scale of the market seems to have gotten smaller than I used to know with more food stalls and lesser artwork and handcrafted items stalls. Nevertheless, it is still a fun place to visit during the weekend.
Eric T — Google review
Though the market has some interesting items overall its a bunch of overpriced artisan goods. Yes I can see how could be good for tourists but just leaves me a little bit cold, maybe i'm misremembering but don't think it was always like this and such a shame to see so many empty stall spaces.
Sam K — Google review
It's a fairly lovely market, they have a couple of special stalls like gluten free food and Colombian and Brazilian BBQ. Easy go get to via tram and open at a good time.

Playground
Fun & Games
The St Kilda Adventure Playground is a whimsical and imaginative park where kids can let loose and have fun. It features an array of play structures such as a large castle with slides, a bouncy boomerang, a pirate ship, treehouses, trampolines, climbing frames, and even a giant elephant. The playground is staffed for safety and offers BBQ facilities and toilets for convenience.
This place is so cool. As soon as you enter, it feels like you've entered into a different world, with an abundance of mulch covering the entire flooring and an abundance of mature trees providing atmosphere and natural shade. There's different types of slides, ramps, steps, a large trampoline, a basketball court, a covered picnic area, a community garden, just to name a few. It has limited opening hours. The website says it's staffed during opening hours which I think is true as there seemed to be someone in charge amongst the crowd having a birthday event that was on when we visited. 2 hour free parking available nearby. Toilets available on site.
Sventek — Google review
Do not go here in 2025. Everything is boarded up except for the trampoline (which there are long wait times for) and a sandpit. It’s apparently getting fixed up later in the year but it’s useless until that is finished which is a shame that there’s going to be a year ++ downtime.
Emma R — Google review
Most areas boarded up and did not help that 2 boys kept hogging the trampoline. The lady who was helping lock up was with them so probably that’s why the boys din take turns with other kids
Wendy L — Google review
The location is great, although in the current state it's a little limited until much needed upgrades are done. Perhaps drop by if close by, although I travelled to check it out with my kids and was a little surprised to see everything outside was boarded up. Despite this, kids still had fun and the atmosphere was relaxing and quiet. Trampoline still open along with indoor activities.
Zane R — Google review
As someone that spent years going to St Kilda Adventure Playground as a child, it was fantastic to go full circle and take my own son there, and see the joy it also brought him! Thank you to the staff and the council for supplying this fantastic service to the community still.

AMAZING community space. Absolutely blown away!!! The playground is mostly under renovation presumably due to some safety concerns but the space is simply wonderful and such a great place for children.

Our girls loved this place. The flying fox and trampoline was a hit. Lots of space for them to run around. Just be sure to check their website re opening hours as we arrived another day and it was closed.
Ames C — Google review
Nearly everything is boarded up closed off. Such a disappointment as this place could be amazing and we drove 45 minutes to get there. May as well close it down as the only thing open is one sandpit and a trampoline which you can't get a turn on. Sad disappointment.

Went to watch the Tiny penguins come home for the night from the pier. Very good viewing platform newly opened. Arrive before sunset, but don't be surprised if your phone camera doesn't do what you see justice. Bring something warm to wear after summer. It gets chilly. Great views over the Melbourne city skyline.

St Kilda Sea Baths is the best. I particularly like the steam room, get nice and hot, then straight out into the Bay for a cool off. Very invigorating, especially in winter. The stand up spa is also great with the ability to direct the strong jets to anywhere on your body that needs it.

Lovely pool. Both me and my partner lost suits there and couldn’t recover them the next day. Turns out the cleaning staff just throw them out. Be careful not to leave anything behind!
Laura N — Google review
Warm pool, good location, adjacent car park, not cheap. Closed for 3 months for renovation and clean but the multi pass swims was not extended so one loses out on unused visits. Low stars as the visit price is more than double the beautiful facilities at the heated outdoor 25 metre and 50 metre pools in Noosa, which also have spa and children's pools. All that can be expected from a Victorian conversion. Nearby MSAC better value for money

Its a one star really because it say’s open but when i arrived at 8:00 pm sunday i see its closed. Please update your hours of operation. Cause it really tickked me off considering i drove from sunshine. Waste of time. Also could be cleaner and parking is a scam. Otherwise not a bad atmosphere.

Nestled in the historic Carlton area just north of Melbourne's CBD, the expansive 70,000-square-meter Melbourne Museum offers a deep dive into the city's rich history and diverse culture. With eight galleries spread across six floors, visitors can explore Aboriginal artifacts at the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre, encounter Australia's unique wildlife including a massive blue whale skeleton and legendary racehorse Phar Lap's preserved body, and take guided tours to uncover hidden stories of Melbourne.
We booked our tickets online which helped us skip the queue. Reached around 10 am when it was still quiet, though it did get busier as the day went on. My son is very curious, and he thoroughly enjoyed every bit of the museum. The Dinosaur section was definitely a major highlight for him. The Rainforest section was another favourite - walking among real flora and trees inside a museum felt amazing! Other sections like bugs & insects, soils, and the Ice Age were equally fascinating. We spent about 4–5 hours exploring everything at a relaxed pace. We had lunch at the Market Café inside the museum, which was quite convenient. Afterward, we enjoyed some time at the beautiful Carlton Gardens just outside - a perfect way to wrap up the visit. Overall, a fantastic experience for both kids and adults. Highly recommend spending half a day here!

Melbourne Museum is an absolute gem! We visited after lunch with my son, and even in just a few hours, we had an incredible time. This is a place where kids (and adults!) can learn so much in a fun and engaging way — you could easily spend a full day exploring. The dinosaur exhibition was a highlight for us, packed with fascinating displays and information that really capture children’s curiosity. We also loved the insect area, which was both educational and surprisingly fun to explore. Everything is well-presented, interactive, and perfect for sparking young minds. Adults tickets are $15, and kids go free, making it fantastic value for families. I recommend booking online to avoid the queues. We’ll definitely be back for a full-day visit next time!

Fantastic Paking under the building is yhe way to go, cheaper parking on the weekends, pricier during the week. Entrance fee free for Kids and consession card holders, $18 for Adults which was very Reasonable. If you wish to attend other exhibitions like Star wars Legos, Max,etc that's an additional cost on top of the initial entry fee. Well worth it, Great 👍 for Families. Highly Recommended

Pretty cool place tbh. The Melbourne Museum is huge — like, you could easily get lost in there. Loved the dinosaur section and the First Peoples exhibit, super interesting and well done. There’s also a kids area that looked fun even if you’re not a kid lol. Some parts felt a bit dated though, and a few displays could use more interactive stuff or better lighting. But overall, it’s a chill spot to spend a few hours and learn a bunch of random cool things. Would def recommend if you’ve got some free time in Melbourne.

We had the best experience at the museum. We went there when there was the Lego Exhibition on Star Wars - the creation were insanely good! There was also a rainforest in the museum - we went in to have a look. We saw the T-Rex show at the iMax theatre too. We had so, so much fun. Absolutely recommend a visit - more than worth the day and money.

Melbourne Museum – Where Curiosity and Culture Come Together Visiting the Melbourne Museum was an inspiring experience. As someone who truly enjoys museums, I found this one exceptional; beautifully curated, thoughtfully designed, and rich in both history and innovation. Each exhibit tells a story, blending science, culture, and art in a way that keeps you engaged from start to finish. The space itself is welcoming and modern, creating an environment where learning feels natural and exploration is encouraged. Whether you visit alone or with family, there’s something to spark curiosity in everyone. Experiences like this remind me that knowledge is not only found in books, it’s also discovered through moments of wonder and reflection.

The Palais Theatre, a classic 1920s picture house turned live entertainment venue, is an iconic landmark on the St Kilda foreshore in Melbourne. This beautifully restored art deco building has hosted a wide range of events over its 90-plus-year history, from mainstream musical acts to ballet and comedy shows. With its rich history and stunning architecture, the theatre attracts both local talent and international superstars.
Such a beautiful old classic theatre with stunning architectural designs, love the atmosphere there. We went to Palais Theatre a multiple times, the seats on the ground level are very uncomfortable, in my memories, the seats on level 1 in Lounge area have the same style of seats as the ground level, they are very uncomfortable but had the best views, the seats on level 1 in Dress Circle are more comfortable, the view was good but very far from the stage and also there are lot of stairs to climb, so be prepared.

My first time going here and I went to see Billy Ocean with my mum. Was such an enjoyable night. The architecture of this building is beautiful. Easy to find. Parking not so much... I suggest getting there a decent bit early before your event starts (an hour or so) to get good parking.

A wonderful concert hall and venue to see a show at located in the heart of St Kilda and close to the beach and famous restaurants, even though parking can be a smaller challenge! Sound is good and seats well placed along with super friendly staff. There are plenty of bars for those wanting a few bubbles to start the evening with. Enjoy

Fantastic theatre, easy to navigate, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Plenty of clean toilets too. One suggestion is to consider installing screens on the sides of the lounge and circle area to ensure people can see clearly.

I went to see Billy Ocean here, good location, it is a great venue, was a great night, staff were friendly, parking was easy, however we did get there a couple of hours before the show was due to start, we had a short walk to Ackland Street enjoyed dinner and got back in time for the show.

I have most recently been to the ballet and the seats in the lounge were fabulous. Love the heated footrests on a chilly day. Lots of places to eat nearby. The interior of the Palais is beautiful

Visitors can enjoy monuments such as the Sali Cleve Drinking Fountain, Captain Cook Monument, and the Cenotaph within the garden grounds.
We had a wonderful family evening at this beautiful spot! The atmosphere was lively and full of good vibes, with stunning views of both the city skyline and the harbour. Everything was clean, well-maintained, and perfect for a family outing. There's plenty of space for a picnic, and you can even hop on an e-bike for a fun ride. Parking is easily available, too. We loved strolling down to the pier, and the highlight was spotting penguins around sunset — a magical experience for everyone! Highly recommend it for a relaxing and memorable family day out.

Large grassy park located at the north-western end of St Kilda, which is a short walk away from the main shopping area and beaches. Plenty of room for kids to run around and make noise, and there are a number of level walking paths to exercise on. No food or drink options in the park itself but less than 5 minutes walk to food/coffee/ alcohol as takes your fancy.

Not very clean, lots of litter. It’s green, but not much to see unless just going for a walk. It’s near the beach and not far of Acland street, so you might as well go there

An underrated and sometimes forgotten when visiting St.Kilda beach, but worth coming if you’re nearby if you want some quiet space. As you can see it’s pretty well lit up during night. Plenty of benches, there’s a public toilet, some drinking fountain, a lovely rotunda in the middle and its very well maintained. Nice place to chill or have a picnic.

There today, 10.9.23 for charity walk/run. Of course have been there before, over the years, but first time taking photos! Lots of lovely palm trees and open space. Popular with families, walkers (with and without dogs), tourists, and locals. Part of the fabric of St. Kilda.

Beautiful gardens closed to the beach and very well laid out. Well maintained and close to the station, shopping and city centre. A few attractions (pier, big wheel, playground and cafes) nearby, and public toilets are located within the park too. There's a central rotunda and lots of connecting paths. Part of the gardens was blocked off for some recent construction work. Dogs are allowed on leash within the park.

Queen Victoria Market, also known as Queen Vic or the Vic Market, is a historic landmark in Melbourne spanning 2 city blocks. It's a paradise for retail enthusiasts, offering everything from food to clothing and hand-crafted jewelry. With over 600 vendors, the market features fresh food, specialty restaurants, grocers, cafes, and ice cream shops. Additionally, it hosts other markets such as the Summer Night Market and the Melbourne Book Market on specific days.
This looks a such a must see when in Melbourne… the fresh food market is fabulous. Heaps of eateries but have a walk around before choosing as there’s a big difference in price… a humble pie could cost you $17, or if you look around you’ll find a better deal for as little as $7. It’s a great spot with loads of souvenirs and a few copies as well. The tram stops directly out the front so it’s a convenient place to get to.

We visited Queen Victoria Market and had a great experience. It’s a fantastic place to buy fresh food, from fruits and vegetables to seafood and meats, with so many options to choose from. We also enjoyed shopping around the market — there are plenty of stalls selling clothes, souvenirs, and local products. The atmosphere is lively and vibrant, making it a fun spot to explore for both tourists and locals. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Melbourne!

It’s a great spot for both locals and tourists to experience a true taste of Melbourne’s culture. Definitely worth spending a few hours wandering around!

I always look forward in visiting this place every time we're in the city! I love the Victoria market for its fresh fruits, seafoods, coffee. They also have different restaurant inside and at the back. I also bought shirts here for my nieces. They have markets for random stuffs. My most favourite area is the seafood place where all fresh seafood is in display. The prices of the oysters here is a bargain and it is very fresh. I highly recommend this place and I look forward to visiting again.

It was my first time in Melbourne, and my husband was keen to take me to the Queen Victoria Market. From 6 in the morning until 12:30, we spent the whole day exploring the market. I was absolutely thrilled by the seafood section and amazed by the incredible variety at the cheese market. The whole experience was simply amazing!

As a tourist, i find this place facinating and unique. The old design in some part of the market is really amazing, not to mention their products too... Cold cuts, cheese, coffee, breads all looks inviting. Their fresh products also amazing. And in the clothing & souvenirs section... Heaven!!! I really enjoy eating fresh oysters, mussel and american doughnuts too. Will visit again next time
Lidia ( — Google review

A massive, sheltered market with a wide variety of offerings. I came mainly for the hot jam doughnuts and mussels, but the market has so much more, fresh produce, seafood, meat, cheeses, souvenirs, clothing, photos, and all sorts of specialty goods. It’s a vibrant place full of sights, smells, and flavors, perfect for wandering, grabbing a bite, and picking up something unique. Whether you’re after food, gifts, or just soaking in the lively atmosphere, there’s plenty to explore! 🛍️🍩🦪

It was good fun. You must visit if you have the time. It takes around 1 hour to complete it. Lovely illusions and trick eye on all the pictures. They have different rates for Individuals and for family packages that work of cheaper. The staff was very helpful and explained us how to take pictures to get a good 3D effect. Kids and adults both will enjoy the place. Follow the instructions given on the floor for each picture to be taken . We went on a weekday and it was practically empty

Fantastic visit. I loved it. We had so much fun there taking loads of photos at so many stations of amazingly crafted designs of Art to include people into the photos. Fabulous variety and awesome experience.
Esther S — Google review
It was a lot of fun. The 3D illusions were impressive. There are suggestions on how to take the photos on the floor and where to stand. But generally hold the camera in a slightly elevated position. Allow at least 1.5 to 2 hours here if you want to take photos at every station and especially if you come with friends. If you come alone you'll need a tripod. Selfies will not work.
Maria N — Google review
ArtVo was an art gallery focused on 3D/optical illusion murals, and it made for a fun, photo-heavy experience. The space was surprisingly large - you’d likely be all snapped out by the end! Some murals looked more convincing than others, and the floor stickers showing where and how to pose were super helpful. While it was not the most interactive exhibit, it was still a fun and entertaining outing overall.

A Creative and Joyful Experience at ArtVo Melbourne I recently visited ArtVo Melbourne with my friends, and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable experiences we’ve shared. From the moment we stepped in, we were surrounded by incredible 3D artwork that invited us to interact, pose, and have fun in the most creative ways. Every corner offered a new opportunity for laughter, imagination, and great photos; turning the visit into a collection of unforgettable memories. The atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming, with staff who were friendly and helpful, ensuring everyone made the most of the experience. It’s a place where art comes to life and where visitors become part of the artwork itself; a concept that feels both playful and inspiring. ArtVo is more than just a gallery; it’s a reminder that creativity thrives when we allow ourselves to have fun and see the world from new perspectives. Sometimes, the best memories are painted with laughter and shared moments of creativity.

St Kilda Pier is a popular spot in Melbourne, offering stunning views of the city skyline and Port Phillip Bay. During the day, visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the pier, bask in the sunshine, and admire the panoramic vistas. The heritage-listed St Kilda Pier Kiosk at the end of the pier provides an opportunity to grab a coffee or snack. As evening falls, it becomes an ideal location for spotting Little Penguins as they make their way back home.
It is a lovely place to visit if you are located close to the city, particularly on a sunny day. The sunset views are to die for, and one can also see a beautiful view of the city skyline. The pier has been recently renovated and is now open from the morning till 5 PM. There are ample places to sit, few cafes nearby to enjoy a cup of hot coffee and has nice walking tracks too. Summers are quite crowded. The best part about this pier is one can see little penguins near the rocks by the pier, particularly during sunset. It is advisable to keep silence near the rocks so as to not disturb the penguins while clicking their photos.
Manini D — Google review
St Kilda Pier is an absolute gem in Melbourne’s vibrant coastal scene, and my visit was nothing short of spectacular! This iconic spot offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, lively atmosphere, and convenient amenities that make it a must-visit destination🙂. The pier itself is a scenic delight, stretching out into Port Phillip Bay with breathtaking views of the city skyline and the shimmering water. Visiting in the evening was a brilliant choice—the sunset paints the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple, creating a magical backdrop for a leisurely stroll. The gentle sea breeze and the sound of waves lapping against the pier add to the serene yet lively vibe. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the resident fairy penguins waddling back to their burrows at dusk—an adorable highlight! One of the standout features is the accessibility and convenience. The parking area near the pier is well-organized, with plenty of spots available even during peak evening hours. While parking isn’t free, the rates are quite reasonable for such a prime location, making it hassle-free to drive in and enjoy the experience without breaking the bank. The pay for amenities and nearby facilities is also very fair. The kiosks and cafes along the foreshore offer a range of delicious food and drinks at decent prices, perfect for grabbing a coffee or fish and chips to enjoy while soaking in the views. The area feels safe and well-maintained, with clean pathways and ample seating to relax and take it all in. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, St Kilda Pier in the evening is an unforgettable experience. The combination of stunning scenery, affordable parking, and a welcoming atmosphere makes it a top-tier destination

Def worth visiting and going for a walk to the end of the jetty. Also lots of seating all the x way along the pier for those that need to take a rest or to sit and see the beautiful city views. I love this pier.

This is such a beautiful addition to St Kilda. The pier is lovely, the beaches are clean, and if you’re lucky enough you’ll see one of the local penguins. This is a free tourist attraction so that’s a great thing. Plenty to see as there are great restaurants from takeaways to fine dining (Donovan’s).

A must-visit when in Melbourne. St Kilda Pier offers stunning views of the city skyline and Port Phillip Bay, especially during sunrise and sunset. Clean, well-maintained, and a perfect place to relax and soak in the fresh sea breeze.

Here's where you can see wild tiny penguin at its natural habitat. Btw note that this is not a penguin parade so you have to patient search and wait for the penguins! Usually they are in between some rocks so look carefully. Don't get your hope up too high if you are expecting a lot of penguins visible in close proximity. This is not your place

The Brighton Bathing Boxes, located about 12km south of Melbourne city center at Brighton Beach, are a collection of 82 brightly colored wooden beach huts dating back to the early 1900s. Originally used for changing into swimwear during the Victorian era, these iconic and much-photographed structures have become a staple of the beachfront. Each hut has its own unique design and character, making them a popular spot for tourists and locals alike to capture memorable photos.
I recently visited the Brighton Bath Box on a day with a beautiful clear blue sky, and it was an amazing experience. The vibrant colors of the beach boxes looked even more striking against the bright sky and sparkling water. Walking along the shoreline, I felt relaxed and inspired by the peaceful atmosphere and the gentle sound of the waves. The area was easy to access, and there was plenty of space to enjoy a stroll or just sit and take in the views. I couldn’t resist taking lots of photos—the combination of the colorful boxes, golden sand, and blue sky made every shot look incredible. Overall, I highly recommend visiting Brighton Bath Box, especially on a sunny day. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing day out, capturing great photos, and enjoying the unique charm of Melbourne’s coastline.

The Brighton Beach bathing boxes were quite interesting and are definitely a popular spot for tourists. They’re also a good option if you enjoy hiking, as you can walk along the coast to places like the Red Bluff Lookout. That said, the bathing boxes themselves weren’t as special as I expected, though maybe the gloomy weather on the day I visited played a part. Still, it was nice to learn about the historical purpose behind them.

A famous spot to visit when in Melbourne. We stopped here briefly just to “check-in” and take some photos with the brightly coloured bathing boxes lining the beach. Each one is uniquely painted and looks great in pictures. The area was smaller than I expected, but still worth a short visit. We took a stroll, snapped some photos, and left after a while. There’s also a café if you want to sit and enjoy the beach view.

An iconic Melbourne landmark that’s as colourful in person as it is in photos. The Brighton Bathing Boxes line the beach with unique designs, making it a perfect spot for photography. The beach itself is clean, peaceful, and offers a great view of the city skyline in the distance. Best visited on a sunny day for those postcard-perfect shots. A must-see for visitors and locals alike.

Brighton Bathing Boxes are an iconic Melbourne highlight—rows of brightly painted beach huts along Dendy Street Beach that are perfect for photos at sunrise or sunset. The beach is clean with gentle waves, and there’s a long walking path if you want a scenic stroll. Parking is available nearby (often paid and busy on weekends), and cafés are within a short drive. Remember the huts are privately owned, so admire from outside and be respectful. A must-visit for visitors and locals alike.

Such a cozy winter warm energy and aesthetic. Had an amazing fire place upstairs right next to the tables. The cracking of fire is a vibe. Jess and Nancy were so accomodating. It was cold outside and I was craving a warm tea, and even though there was no tea on the menu, Jess went above and beyond and brought me one over. Both women are a great faces for the brand. They made sure that we felt welcomed and were such kind energy. The food was perfect. The sticky date was amazing on a Sunday winter night. The bread and dip and Mac & cheese is a must do.

Pub had a nice atmosphere and the outdoor rooftop was great. It wasn't huge, but ample seating. There was a great selection of beers etc. The food was disappointing though. The lamb shoulder was extremely fatty and wasn't a huge amount of meat. At $38 I was hoping for a bit better quality. The salad that came with it was really nice though. The fried chicken was slightly overcooked. Overall I'd come back and try something else as maybe it was an off day.

The atmosphere was great and the bartender was lovely. Unfortunately my Oyster Mushroom Fettuccine pasta was undercooked, and some of the fettuccine stuck together, making it a bit hard to chew. Not really what you want from a $30 meal.

Visited in Nov 2025 Stopped by The Local Taphouse one afternoon during my recent trip to MEL. The place is owned by the same folks who operate the Stomping Ground which I had visited before. The Local Taphouse is a nice establishment with a very good collection of tap beers and some nice food dishes to go along with the drinks. I had made a reservation, but would have gotten a table immediately even if I didn’t have one, given I visited late in the afternoon. I tried the tasting paddle (comprising 5 beers which I could choose) first before deciding to order a couple of them I liked separately. My friends and I ended up trying more than half of the beers they had on tap 🙂 All in all, enjoyed my time here and would definitely recommend a visit here if you’re in the St. Kilda area.

What a lovely little gem on a cold wet night. Sunday roast with all the trimming. Yumm.. The bar staff where busy but still very efficient and very little wait for a delicious meal. The fish and chips was very expensive for what it was (and very heavy handed with the Dill). But the roast with the Yorkshire pudding was yum. Rotating roasts as per the website.. will definitely be back ..

Nice chilled place with terrace seating. The staff are friendly and the beer is good. Food was great too. If I was local I'd probably be in here a lot.

We recently had our wedding reception at The Local Taphouse. We booked the bocce room for ~30 people. The food and drinks were excellent, and a lot of people commented on the taramasalata. The staff were lovely and great to deal with. Special shout-out to James, their function manager, who went above and beyond - including organising kids meals and setting up the flowers and cupcakes we had delivered the day before. They took the stress out of our wedding day. Would wholeheartedly recommend hosting your function here.

The Victoria Police Museum is a must-visit for true crime enthusiasts, offering a comprehensive look into Victoria's gritty history. It houses the largest collection of Kelly Gang armor in the world, Squizzy memorabilia, and relics from notorious criminals. From CSI forensics to historical policing practices, this quirky museum provides insight into the state's law enforcement and crime history.
Great place, the museum is a bit small but still has great things able to collect a lot of information. Love the idea of interactive displays and everything. I was like a kid playing with everything. 😄 Love the idea of the Kelly Gang display I was incredible amazed. I got some souvenirs, the plush are really cute. The customer service was very friendly and lovely.

Small but well curated museum showcasing the history of Victoria's police force. You'll need about 20 minutes to walk through - longer if you engage with the interactive installations. Great for both kids and adults. Wheelchair accessible and all on one level floor. Staff very approachable :) Located within the Melbourne West police complex - very close to Southern Cross train station , trams along both Spencer st and Latrobe Street (including the number 35 tourist tram). Free entry.

Brilliant! Sadly, quite a small museum but they have packed a lot in. A must for anyone interested in police/police history. Free to visit and a nice little shop at the front of the museum. Lots of things to look at and facts to read. Multiple interactive ‘games’ to play as well.
Karen — Google review
Showcasing Victoria Police since inception, this small museum is both historical and insightful. Covering all sectors of The Force from the days of police horses, the canine unit, forensics, Ned Kelly (largest display of Kelly memorabilia) and much more it’s well worth a visit. Congratulations to the team who curated this with attention to detail as well as respect for officers who have died in the line of duty. Plenty for kids to do that’s fun and engaging. The whole museum would take around 40 minutes if you read all the displays and played along with some of the activities such as making a photo id from a quick viewing of a person’s face or examining your hand under a high powered microscope. Found the audio / video of the historical events of the Russell St bombing and Walsh Street murders triggering as I remember where I was when each of those events occurred and the emotions it brings up after the fact. Tragic. Staff are lovely and very helpful. Notes: Wheelchair accessible, no food available, tram right out the front, only a few hundred metres from Southern Cross station in the Melbourne West police complex, free entry. #tripadvisor #tripadvisorreview #tripadvisorreviewer #googlelocalguide #googlelocalguides #letsguide #thewanderingreviewer #victoriapolicemuseum @victoriapolicemuseum

Curated professionally and well thought through with highlighting significant moments in police and Victorian history. I was impressed and surprised we didn't have to pay a set admission fare too (donations based). It's not an overally huge exhibition but there is still plenty to see and organised into different sections. Easy to understand. It's very unassuming from the outside. Staff were very friendly and approachable too. There's also some merch if you want a police dog plushy!

I know this isn't really the place to put this review but I had to say something about the sergeant at South Melbourne police station on 31/08/25 at around 4:30pm. I was transferred to him after calling 000 in the middle of a road rage incident. He was calming, friendly and empathic whilst maintaining professionalism. We need more cops like him. Faith in humanity restored. Thank you for caring when it is far easier to not care. I really hope he sees this!

St Kilda Beach, located 6 kilometers south of Melbourne's center, offers a picturesque setting for beach weddings and a variety of recreational activities. Visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, windsurfing, sailing, kitesurfing, rollerblading, beach volleyball, jet skiing, and water skiing. The area is popular among tourists and locals alike for its relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of Bondi Beach without the crowds.
Been to the beach after almost 4 years the pier has been developed and looks fresh and gives a really nice view of the city. The walk around the beach is also great with restaurants and disco at the side. The weather was nice we enjoyed walk at the side of the beach and then at the pier.

Nice, long beach. Good for sunset views and photos. Not the best for swimming as it is crowded with both locals and tourists. The beach is decently clean and along the promenade there are buskers performing, making it a perfect place for a walk with great vibes.

If you're looking for a unique wildlife experience without straying too far from Melbourne's bustling CBD, the St Kilda Penguins are a delightful option. Nestled along the sandy beaches of St Kilda, this charming colony boasts around 1,400 little penguins that come ashore each night. While you can enjoy watching these adorable tuxedoed creatures, it's essential to respect their space—avoid touching or feeding them and refrain from using bright lights.
Multiple penguins came out 1hr after sunset. Low Visibility with naked eye, can capture images with night mode.
Ferdinand W — Google review
The new pier and penguin walkway are very nice. The views of the harbour and Melbourne skyline are fantastic, especially at sunset. Currently, access to the penguin walkway is limited to between 9AM - 5PM and a security guard enforces the hours. Unfortunately, the penguins only return to the rocks after sunset when it gets dark, around 6PM, so don’t expect to see any penguins, just the rocks that they call home. After 6PM, we heard the penguins from a distance in the dark, but never saw them.
Mike M — Google review
Omg this is the cutest thing to do we got to see so many coming and on the rocks highly recommend just rug up.the best time to go is winter you don’t have to wait long before u see them come in
E C — Google review
I live in the area. Sometimes you are lucky and you see lots of them swiming around or coming into or out of the water. Most of the time you can hear them but the low level of light makes them hard to make out. There is no booking needed and no wait time.
Mathew T — Google review
As mentioned by other reviewers the new breakwater is not open after 5pm to allow the penguins to recover following recent construction in the area. As a result your chances of seeing penguins are limited, and the area is quite dark making photography difficult- flash photography is not allowed. Check the St Kilda Penguins website for latest details on whether the pier is fully open before making a special trip.

Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria - Melbourne Gardens, established in 1846, covers 36 hectares and features Australian species as well as non-native gardens. Similar to New York's Central Park, it occupies a significant portion of the city and offers various attractions such as the Melbourne Observatory, Guilfoyles Volcano, and Fern Gully. The gardens are home to diverse wildlife including black swans, kookaburras, and cockatoos.
The Botanical Gardens are very well maintained and set out. Got it split up into different areas. It is well worth a wonder through there to see. Seats are around to sit and enjoy the tranquility. Plenty of bird life. Quite a wide range of plants through out the grounds. A must see. Not too far from the city.

Just a beautiful, peaceful place to be quiet, still the mind and be present. The sounds of nature is a powerful healer. A breathtaking garden in the heart of Melbourne! I visited the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria – Melbourne Gardens in early October, during springtime, and the whole place was bursting with color and life. The air was filled with the scent of flowers, and the lake reflected the blue sky beautifully. There are thousands of plant species from around the world, peaceful walking paths, and plenty of spots to sit and relax. The Japanese Garden area and the blooming cherry blossoms were absolutely stunning. What I loved most was the sense of peace — just a few minutes from the busy city, yet it feels like a different world. Whether you come for a morning walk, photography, or a quiet picnic, this garden is a must-visit in Melbourne.

### Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne: A Moody Spring Gem Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens is a lush urban oasis, especially magical in spring under dramatic cloudy skies—perfect for moody, high-contrast photos. The star? The vast Cacti and Succulent Collection: 3,000+ spiky survivors like towering saguaros and night-blooming Echinopsis, thriving in the redeveloped Arid Garden. Nearby, the new drought-friendly forest of hardy eucalypts and acacias nods to climate resilience with rugged beauty. Spring explodes in color—cherry blossoms, magnolias, tulips, and vibrant perennials—against silvered skies, buzzing with life. A serene, free escape. Five stars.

Our visit to Melbourne Skydeck was a truly memorable experience. It’s one of the best spots in the city to enjoy a panoramic view of Melbourne from high above. The observation deck gives a 360-degree view, allowing you to take in the skyline, river, and iconic landmarks all at once. Watching the sunset from the top was magical — the colors in the sky changed beautifully, making it perfect for photos. Many people also recommend the sunrise view for a peaceful start to the day. The place is very family-friendly, and our kids were excited to spot famous buildings and watch the trams below. The interactive displays made the experience more fun for them. We tried some food and drinks from the café; although the prices were a bit expensive, we really enjoyed the mocktails, which were refreshing and tasty. If you’re visiting Melbourne, this is a must-see attraction — especially for first-time visitors who want to see the city from above. A short visit can give you a great glimpse of the entire city. Overall, it’s a wonderful experience for both kids and adults.

We visited the Melbourne Skydeck and it was absolutely worth it for the views alone—panoramic sights of the city that are especially stunning at sunset. It’s the kind of place that really makes you appreciate Melbourne from a whole new perspective. We grabbed a couple of drinks at the bar, which were definitely on the pricier side—but honestly, that’s expected at a spot like this. Sipping a cocktail while watching the skyline light up was a great way to take it all in. If you’re in Melbourne and want a memorable experience, the Skydeck delivers—a bit touristy, but totally worth it. Nice addition to add. It has the world’s fastest ascending elevator which is a cool touch.

The shrine hosts over 120 ceremonies and commemorative services annually, making it an active venue for honoring heroes. Its location offers stunning views of Melbourne city and the bay area. The solemn atmosphere and architectural design resembling ancient Greece create a poignant experience for visitors.
A beautifully designed and deeply moving memorial that honours those who served. The architecture is striking, with panoramic views of Melbourne from the upper balcony. Inside, the exhibits are thoughtfully curated, offering both history and reflection. The Eternal Flame and the Ray of Light ceremony add a solemn touch. Peaceful gardens surround the shrine, making it a place of both remembrance and quiet contemplation. A must-visit for anyone in Melbourne.

Art Museums
The National Gallery of Victoria, also known as NGV, is a renowned art museum in Melbourne that boasts an extensive and diverse collection of Australian and international art and artifacts. It is divided between two buildings: the Ian Potter Centre in Federation Square and the NGV International on St Kilda Road.
I visited the National Gallery of Victoria on a busy Saturday afternoon with friends. I’ve been a few times before as a local, but this visit stood out because I had the chance to really explore more of what the gallery offers. It’s just a short walk or tram ride from Flinders Street Station if you’re coming by PTV, or plenty of paid parking is available nearby if you’re driving. The building itself is hard to miss, with its large size, striking fountain and man made pond out the front, and of course the iconic water wall at the entrance. Entry is free unless you choose to see one of the rotating paid exhibitions. This time, we skipped the ticketed exhibit and wandered through the many free galleries instead. On the ground floor, there’s a stunning foyer space filled with sculptures and the famous room with the colourful stained glass ceiling, which always feels magical to walk under. From there, you can step outside into the sculpture garden and pond area, which is another highlight. Getting upstairs is easy with both escalators and accessible options. The galleries are currently arranged by region, and it was fascinating to walk through each one and see the differences and similarities across cultures. I especially loved the Japanese and Chinese galleries, the detail and richness of the traditional pieces were incredible. Even though it was busy, the space felt open enough for everyone to explore at their own pace. There were toilets on every level, information points, and staff around to help if you needed directions. The building itself is so large that it almost felt like a maze at times but getting “lost” just meant stumbling upon more artwork to enjoy. We didn’t even manage to get through everything before closing, which only gives me another reason to come back. Everything felt well looked after, and the whole gallery had such a calm, inspiring vibe. I’d absolutely recommend visiting the NGV if you’re in Melbourne and looking for something to do in the CBD. It’s packed with history, culture, and beauty, and it’s the kind of place that makes you want to return again and again.
Ashlee J — Google review
The NGV is definitely a must-visit when you’re in Melbourne. The variety of art on display is incredible — from classic works to contemporary installations, Indigenous pieces, and international exhibitions. Every room offers something unique, and you can easily spend hours exploring without getting bored. What I loved most was how thoughtfully everything was curated. The exhibitions had a clear flow, the descriptions were informative, and the overall vibe was calm and inspiring. The gallery space itself is also stunning — spacious, clean, and easy to access by public transport. That said, it can get very crowded during major exhibitions. Some parts felt rushed or hard to fully enjoy because of the number of people. Also, the layout can be a bit confusing at times, especially when transitioning between different sections or locations. A few visitors seemed frustrated by early room closures or long queues for ticketed exhibits. Still, the positives definitely outweigh the negatives. NGV offers a rich cultural experience and is a gem for both locals and tourists. Just try to visit on a weekday or earlier in the day to avoid the peak rush!

The National Gallery of Victoria is such a gem in Melbourne! ✨ From the moment you walk in, the space feels inspiring and full of creativity. The mix of classic art and modern exhibitions is amazing—you’ll always find something new that surprises you. The building itself is beautiful, and it’s the perfect spot to spend a few hours wandering, reflecting, or just enjoying the vibe. Definitely one of my favorite places in the city! 🎨
James P — Google review
This review is a little bit different in that it is not really about the artistic side of the Gallery. I'm sure many people don't know about the garden area at the back of the Gallery - it is a little gem of a place to get away from the crowds, it has seating, small, low tables, a few outdoor sculptures and is perfect to take the young ones for a respite, eating morning tea or lunch and a specific 3D hexagonal, interlaced cable structure which the kids love to climb on. At this time of the year, October, the table seating is beneath a magnificent purple-mauve Wisteria trellis. The area is free of charge - it is shaded, has a small bridge over a small moat and the water beneath is full of coins that are signs of many, many people's wishes.

This is my first business trip to Australia, and I’ve come to the city of Melbourne. Today is Sunday, and I finally found some free time to visit an Australian art gallery. The collection here is very diverse, featuring both Eastern and Western works, including sculptures, art creations, and paintings. I personally prefer viewing paintings, so I took many photos of them. I won’t go into too much detail here, but I highly recommend everyone visit, it’s a truly visually pleasing experience.
CH — Google review
The NGV is always a great place to spend a few hours, even though it was quite packed during my visit, there’s so much to see that it’s worth it. The mix of permanent collections and changing exhibitions keeps things fresh, and I really appreciated that some of the exhibitions are free, which makes it very accessible. A must-visit if you’re in Melbourne.

The Gallery is wonderful! I’ve visited several times and always enjoyed it. But today the security staff refused to let me in with my usual women’s shoulder bag, even though I’ve come with this very bag before without any issue. It was really upsetting and spoiled the mood. Thankfully, the manager stepped in right away, was very polite and resolved everything quickly. I truly hope the security team receive clearer guidance so visitors don’t have their experience ruined like this again.

Went to the French Impressionist Exhibition & Kimono exhibition during my Melbourne holiday recently. Both were simply amazing experiences, not to mention the other 4 floors of amazing artwork, period pieces & exhibits. If you plan on visiting I recommend making this an all day experience in order to get the best possible outcome of art appreciation.

The Old Melbourne Gaol, located in the heart of Melbourne, is a historic tri-level jail that once housed notorious inmates from 1842 until its closure in 1929. Today, it stands as a museum offering self-guided and guided tours to visitors. The gaol shares the stories of some of Australia's most infamous criminals, including Ned Kelly. Visitors can explore original cells, gallows, and hear captivating tales about the prisoners' lives and crimes.
An unforgettable step back in time! Visiting the Old Melbourne Gaol was an incredible experience — eerie, educational, and deeply fascinating. It gives a raw glimpse into Australia’s criminal past and the lives of some of its most notorious figures, including Ned Kelly. The preserved cells, haunting atmosphere, and well-curated exhibits really bring history to life. Highly recommend it to anyone interested in true crime, history, or just looking for something unique to do in Melbourne!

Spent 2 hours wandering around this history filled jail, had goosebumps for the entire time! Did the extra Ned Kelly tour with our tour guide Tom and I highly recommend as it really brings the jail to life. Highly recommend a visit and I can’t wait to return and do one of the night tours!

It's an interesting place with a lot of history. The staff are friendly and seem to enjoy their work. The actress/guide on the night in particular was very good. The Ghosts! What ghosts? Tour wasn't what you'd call scary in any way but it was very interesting.

My partner and I attended the 'Ghosts? What Ghosts?' guided tour, lead by a great storyteller Janette. I loved the experience and stories told, as well as the images we saw along the way. Loved being guided in the dark, added to the atmosphere. Overrall very very happy with our experience, loved it!

The library is beautiful, it's definitely a must see when walking around Melbourne. The dome is one of the main attractions and doesn't disappoint. Obviously it's still a real library so please be respectful as you walk around. There is a museum section as well and just a real pleasure to see.

Visited State Library Victoria, a stunning blend of history and knowledge in the heart of Melbourne. The domed La Trobe Reading Room is breathtaking, and the historic architecture combined with modern galleries makes it a perfect spot to explore or enjoy some quiet time. Fun fact: it’s Australia’s oldest public library, established in 1854.

We made a special trip to this library, which is reputed to be the most beautiful. Sorry, but I didn’t borrow a single book, as I came purely to see this stunning architecture. Looking up at the double-height space, you can feel a sense of spacious, pressure-free openness. Many tourists kept taking photos, even as closing time approached. The staff repeatedly reminded everyone that it was time to leave, yet many were still reluctant to go. This alone speaks volumes about the charm of this place. Perhaps it’s not that no one was borrowing books, but the simple, substantial, and grand spatial beauty is truly unforgettable.

Such a good place to visit and hang out. Full of students doing their assignments as well as tourists checking their collections, but still nice and quiet. Learn more about Ned Kelly here. They also have his real armor on display. My wife use one of their library room to have zoom meeting. You can do this for free by making an appointment.

When we were in Melbourne, we visited State Library Victoria, one of the oldest and most beautiful libraries in the world. The La Trobe Reading Room with its white dome ceiling is absolutely magnificent — peaceful, bright, and full of charm. Many tourists go up to Level 5 and 6 for the best photo spots overlooking the dome. Free entry, open to everyone — definitely a must-visit when you’re in Melbourne!

Visited the State Library Victoria and was completely impressed by its beauty and atmosphere. The main reading room — the La Trobe Reading Room — is breathtaking, with its grand dome ceiling and elegant symmetry. It’s one of those rare places where you instantly feel calm and inspired just by walking in. The mix of history, architecture, and quiet focus makes it a true landmark of Melbourne. The library isn’t just for studying — it also features exhibitions, art displays, and comfortable reading spaces for everyone. The staff were friendly and helpful, and everything was clean and well maintained. Whether you’re a student, traveler, or book lover, it’s the perfect spot to slow down and take in the culture of the city. Definitely one of Melbourne’s must-visit places — peaceful, inspiring, and full of history.

It makes use of 3.2 hectares of space and includes several notable venues for art and cultural events and performances along with museums, galleries and restaurants. You can learn more about current and upcoming events on the Fed Square website. There are a handful of modern buildings with appealing architectural design on the square, making this an interesting place to browse and spend time even if not visiting to attend events. For this purpose you can pass by and spend a few minutes just before crossing Princes Bridge and the Yarra River to spend time at the Gardens or South Bank attractions to the south.

Fed Square, Melbourne Victoria Australia 🌏 Festive and Iconic Melbourne Spot – Federation Square Federation Square, located right across from Flinders Street Station, is one of Melbourne’s most iconic and vibrant public spaces. I visited during the Christmas season, and the atmosphere was absolutely magical. The Christmas decorations were beautifully done, creating a festive mood with sparkling lights, themed displays, and a giant Christmas tree. To top it off, there were live Christmas carol performances, bringing joy to families and passersby alike. The square is incredibly spacious, making it a great spot to relax, meet friends, or enjoy public events. It often hosts cultural performances, exhibitions, and seasonal celebrations that add life to the city. Another highlight is its proximity to ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image)—just a short walk within the square. Fitzroy Gardens, a historic 26-hectare site located in the city center, offers a picturesque setting with its lush lawns, tree-lined walking paths, and charming cafes. The gardens boast a rich history spanning 150 years and feature various attractions such as fountains, sculptures, historic buildings, ornamental follies like the old bandstand and Temple of the Winds Rotunda.
Absolutely beautiful park, perfect spot for a picnic or a stroll. There's lots of mature trees that provide plenty of shade along the majority of the paths and dotted across the lawns. The miniature village is pretty cute - it's a shame you can't actually walk through it anymore, but you can still get a really good view from every angle. The little streams and waterfalls are so peaceful, it's easy to forget you're actually in the CBD while walking through the secluded trails. The sculptures and details on the fountains are lovely, too. We didn't go inside the historic cottage on the grounds, but it looks absolutely charming from the outside and having the tour guides dressed in period clothing and acting the part out in the front garden was a great touch. We'll definitely be doing that tour next time we visit.

Visiting ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) in Melbourne was an immersive and inspiring experience. From the moment I stepped inside, I was struck by how beautifully the museum blends art, technology, and storytelling. The permanent exhibition, The Story of the Moving Image, took me on a journey through the evolution of film, television, video games, and digital culture. Interactive displays encouraged me to engage directly with the material — I could edit a short film, step into iconic movie scenes, and even create my own stop-motion animation. Every section was thoughtfully curated, showcasing how moving images shape the way we see ourselves and the world. Beyond the exhibits, ACMI’s atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming. The staff were knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what they do, happy to share insights or recommend hidden gems within the museum. The design of the space itself — sleek, modern, and filled with light — made it easy to lose track of time wandering through its galleries. I finished my visit with a coffee at the café and a browse through the gift shop, which offered clever film-themed merchandise and local art. Overall, ACMI felt like more than just a museum — it was a celebration of creativity, innovation, and the power of storytelling in all its forms.

So interactive, 10/10, my favourite museum now Went on a Saturday but it wasn’t that crowded It’s even free to enter and they give you this little disc to tap around the museum and add it to the disc. This disc can show your collected favourites at the end. You can bring it home too and check ur collection on their website. I love the game section and played Untitled Goose Game. Everything else was so informative and cool and as a movie/game lover myself it certainly exceeded my expectations of an art museum Ranked as my favourite museum of all the museums I’ve ever visited, wish it was in my homeland coz I’ll go back to it like every single day

Originally serving as the state's treasury, this building has been transformed into an exhibition space featuring collections such as Protest Melbourne and Yarra: Stories of Melbourne's River.
Had a wonderful time here. The staff is lovely and gave me an excellent rundown of the exhibits. The building itself is worth a visit. The interior is beautiful. The exhibits were also great. In the basement, there was a focus on the gold rush and how it impacted the development of Melbourne. The ground floor was focused more generally on the history of Melbourne and its development. There were wonderful displays showing pictures of the city in the past and then pictures from the same point of view in modern times. There were also exhibits that highlighted various social movements related to women’s rights, aboriginal relations, etc. The 1st floor had an exhibit on political cartoons. Overall, a great way to spend a couple of hours to appreciate the history and development of this wonderful city.

🏛️ Old Treasury Building in Melbourne is a stunning heritage landmark located on Spring Street, admired for its elegant 19th-century Renaissance Revival design by renowned architect J.J. Clark. Today, the building serves as a fascinating museum, showcasing Melbourne’s rich history, architecture, and cultural heritage. The Old Treasury Building is one of those Melbourne landmarks that sneaks up on you – right there on Spring Street, looking stately and elegant. The architecture is classic, clean, and full of that “old world” charm that makes it perfect for wedding shoots or just an afternoon of wandering with a camera. The steps, the columns, the symmetry – it all feels made for Instagram, and honestly, you don’t have to try hard to get a good shot. It’s the kind of place where even a casual snap looks polished. Inside, there’s some history on Melbourne’s gold rush era, which is interesting if you’ve got the time, but for me it’s really the outside that shines. The building’s presence against the city backdrop makes it both timeless and photogenic. If you’re in the area, it’s an easy stop, and if you’re planning wedding photos or just looking to pad out your feed with something classy, this is a no-brainer.

Check website for open days to be sure. The kids who were there today looked pretty engaged & entertained. If it had more immersive experiences on offer - definitely attract more patronage. Below the deck cargohold is fascinating but overall not enough labelling to explain what items are. Visit the museum style area upon entry first to be informed before exploring the ship - i did it in reverse. Good mobility is required to get around obviously. A short video presentation on the workings inside the ship, actual navigation & the painstaking restoration would be good given the attention span these days for reading info boards! Spent almost 2 hours but that's my interest in Melb's past & history. One hour shld do. Opens at 10.00 am. There's a guided tour for kids & families at 11.30 am.Toilets onsite & some souvenirs for sale.

We attended the Pirate Day and it was absolutely beyond our expectations. Our 6 years old had the best time of his life and loved every minute of it. There’s a little food kiosks on site with gold coin donation sausage sizzle and barista coffee for tired parents. The event was creative, well thought out and well worth the ticket price. The kids had so much fun while learning little facts about the ship and the life of its crew. 10/10 event!

Took our 5 and 7 year olds to Pirate Day (3rd Sunday of the month). My son is right into ships at the moment so he loved the opportunity to go on a real one. There was a great balance of activities to fill a couple of hours alongside plenty of opportunities to explore the ship either in a group or at the end when some people started leaving. The pirates were great and kept the children nicely entertained. It was a really fun day out (there was an ice cream stand and ferris wheel nearby while we waited). Activities likely too young for an older child (8/9+).

First saw Polly Woodside on a trip to Melbourne with Cubs in 1978..... We spend much of the time in her looking for the cannons! An absolute treasure of an icon..... Would love to see her doing a regular trip out on Port Phillip Bay

You could easily miss this historic vessel as it’s sandwiched between buildings but it’s pretty special moored right in the city.

Being a National Trust member has many advantages and one of them is free entry to most of their properties - the biggest travesty though is the NTV occupying a gorgeous heritage building and there being no access. Here is a thought, move into a normal office building and restore/make available the HQ to the public who support you. Anyway, Polly Woodside IS accessible to members. Primarily of interest to kids and shipping enthusiasts. We were in and out in 15mins.

Polly Woodside was built in 1885 in Belfast as a three masted Iron Barge and covered around 1.5 million kms around the globe. It use to largely carry coal between England and South America but made many trips to Australia & NZ as well. The owner of the ship named it “Polly” after his wife Marian Woodside whose nickname was “Polly” because she talked all the time like a parrot. It’s worth checking out the Captain’s quarters and other crew’s rooms and how they lived and traveled through ships in those days. It is one of the very few ships in the world from that era that have survived and are on display for people to see today. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Melbourne city.

The ANZ Banking Museum is a small but interesting museum with a great history. It is worth visiting for the experience and the architecture is quite beautiful.
Located within the historic ANZ Bank building on Collins Street, this small museum presents a relatively engaging look at Australia’s banking past. The collection is compact but informative, making it a nice stop if you’re nearby. What makes the visit especially pleasant is the atmosphere — quiet, cosy, and calm, with only a few people around. The building’s interior, designed in the grand Victorian Gothic style, is genuinely impressive and adds character to the experience. Best of all, entry is free.

Fun fact: The ANZ Banking Museum is not just a museum, it's housed inside a fully operational ANZ branch, so you can stop in to do real banking and explore its historic exhibits. Located in Melbourne’s iconic “Gothic Bank”, built between 1883 and 1887 as the English, Scottish & Australian Chartered Bank, the building is one of Australia's finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture, designed by William Wardell. After a two‑year restoration completed in 2024, the bank reopened as a specialist hub offering full banking services alongside its Banking Museum. The museum, free and open to both ANZ customers and the general public, is self‑guided and located on the lower ground floor. Inside you’ll discover a rich trove of banking artifacts, manuscripts, early ledgers (including one with the signature of Saint Mary MacKillop), antique calculators, moneyboxes, and gold‑rush era equipment: all drawn from over 170 years of archival materials. So it’s true: it’s the most stunning bank I’ve ever been to: where you can truly bank within a piece of Melbourne’s living architectural and social history.

When you are in Melbourne, do spend some time to visit the ANZ bank Banking Museum at 380 Collins Street. One of the finest Gothic-Rivival building in Australia. It showcases Australia's banking heritage through displays of currency, money boxes, office machines, firearms, gold-mining equipment and uniforms. Opening Hours : 9am to 4pm Monday to Thursday and closes at 5pm on Friday with actual banking and tellers and reception within the exhibition hall. Entry is free and visitors can self-explore any time within opening hours. The friendly ANZ concierge is available to guide you. Tours of the Verdon Chambers (former residence) and Safe Deposit Building are not available at this time.

Fantastic architect and history! ANZ Bank Museum is worth spending time to explore the history of this bank!
Eric W — Google review
The ANZ museum is such a beautiful and grand space. I feel like it was more impressive when there were bank tellers and it was an active branch (only a few years back?) because the few displays aren’t particularly exciting. There were quite a few staff around pretending to be busy and talking amongst themselves but I’m not sure what purpose they served. The newly arrived security guard was talking on hands free the entire time whilst protecting the museum. I wish they’d open the vaults back up to the public as they’re fascinating.

Such a beautiful and epic building in Melbourne CBD, spectacular architecture, stone, floor and everything. Definitely worthwhile to have a look at this free museum.

There are a lot of carefully considered and interesting artefacts from the banking industry. The building itself is well restored and beautiful. The curator Allen was especially impressive in terms of his knowledge and customer friendliness. A very enjoyable experience overall.
