Santuario Madonna di Capocolonna is a charming religious site located in Calabria, Italy. It is perched on a promontory overlooking the stunning Ionian Sea, offering breathtaking panoramic views. The sanctuary is steeped in history and is believed to have been built on the ruins of an ancient Greek temple. Visitors can explore the sacred grounds, adorned with beautiful frescoes and religious artifacts, and take in the tranquil atmosphere.
(Translated by Google) The small church of Santa Maria di Capo Colonna was built by Basil monks between the 11th and 13th centuries. Its current shape is the result of several renovations, most recently in 1897. The church originally housed a valuable Madonna icon from 1519, now on display in Crotone Cathedral. This icon can be seen here during the annual procession for the feast of the Madonna di Capocolonna. Anyone visiting this area should definitely visit the well-restored church.

(Translated by Google) The current small sanctuary on the promontory of Capo Colonna does not have great artistic or architectural merits, however it has enormous devotional importance for the people of Crotone, who every year in May hold a great celebration (with solemn procession) that lasts several days in honor of the Black Madonna of Capo Colonna. In practice the sacred area has been confirmed over the millennia, passing from the pagan Lacinian Era to the Catholic Virgin Mary. The visit to the church lasts a few minutes, the archaeological area around it is much more interesting.

(Translated by Google) The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Capocolonna is undoubtedly one of the most evocative and spiritual places in the area. Overlooking the sea, it offers a breathtaking view and a peaceful atmosphere that invites reflection and meditation. The structure is well maintained and the site conveys all its historical and religious importance. A sore point: despite the presence of numerous visitors, the adjacent bar was closed, a significant shortcoming in a fairly isolated area, where a refreshment point would certainly have been appreciated. Overall, a place that is absolutely worth a visit, but which could offer a more complete service to those who come from far away.

(Translated by Google) The church was built in 1554 on the remains of a sacred building two centuries older. On 22 June 1777 the church was consecrated with a solemn rite by the then bishop Giuseppe Capocchiani. The facade is divided into two levels consisting of columns and portal, the lower one, and columns and niches, the upper one. Near the building you can see the remains of the ancient city walls that stand next to the church. Inside it is characterized by wall decorations and frescoes with a Neapolitan baroque flavor and linked to the pictorial style of the 19th century. Among the various works of art preserved, of particular interest is a seventeenth-century wooden crucifix, transported here from the nearby church of San Giuseppe which contains one of the few crucifixes in the world, the "Crucified Christ" representing Jesus with his eyes open, a moment before dying and not with his eyes closed, as we are used to seeing. The apse, behind the altar, is made up of three niches which house the statues of Saint Lucia (every 13th December, the saint's anniversary, it is exhibited to the public), the Immaculate Virgin Mary and Saint Francis. The lower level of the sacred building houses the crypt which preserves some wooden statues, paintings and a small altar where, in the past, persecuted Christians gathered to pray. The room is partly frescoed with characters and stories from the Gospels. In a small window hundreds of skulls of the faithful are kept surmounted by a wooden statue of the Risen Christ. Churches & Cathedrals
Nestled in the heart of Crotone, the Church of St. Joseph is a charming little gem that reflects the city's rich history. Originally constructed in the early 18th century to serve as a home for the Confraternity of Maria Addolorata, this quaint church underwent significant reconstruction in 1719 under the guidance of Onofrio De Sanda and local carpenters, funded by generous donations from devoted parishioners.
(Translated by Google) Going up from via Risorgimento, your gaze crosses the Church of San Giuseppe, built in the eighteenth century, and consecrated by the Bishop of Strongoli Domenico Morelli (in ancient times Strongoli was the seat of a bishop). The Church is well maintained, with a wooden door, and on the sides it is possible to see the domes, in Byzantine style, which are located on the side chapels. The facade is in late Baroque style, and the beauty of the Church is told by the reconstruction carried out in the early 1800s, by will of the deacon Onofrio De Sanda and, right on the architrave, the phrase "D.O.M./ AD DIVO JOSEPHO 1719/ CURA" is carved HONUPHRII DE SANDA/ TEMPLUM PIORUM AELEMOSINIS ERECTUM. Dedicated to Saint Joseph, patron saint of families and carpenters, by the will of a group of "shipwrights or carpenters" who, in the spring of the same year, asked the Bishop for authorization to build a church dedicated to their protector Saint Joseph . the sacred building preserves its ancient charm, with a white marble altar that shines in the silence of the ancient church of San Giuseppe di Crotone. There are four side chapels, containing the statues of San Gregorio and San Nicolò of Bari above the marble altars, and the statue of San Giuseppe is located in the central nave. In one of the chapels there is the fresco of San Michele Arcangelo, where next to it there is a modern painting depicting the patron saint of Crotone, San Dionigi. While in the Gallucci-Zurlo chapel, there is a particular wooden crucifix, which was carved in the 18th century. This is what the Historical Archive of Crotone writes: The four noble chapels belong to four patrician families from Crotone: Ayerbis Aragona della Grotteria, extinct, Lucifero, Galluccio, Sculco. In the Sculco chapel, two marbles with Latin inscriptions are embedded in the wall laterally. The history of the Church of San Giuseppe in Crotone: In 1807 the church of San Giuseppe became the seat of the congregation of nobles called Santa Maria dei Sette Dolori or dell'Addolorata. The brothers brought the painting depicting Our Lady of Sorrows to the new location, placing it above the high altar. Also in these years, a new chapel with an altar dedicated to San Francesco di Paola was built by the Galluccio family. Around the end of the nineteenth century, the Soda family built a small altar in the Gallucci chapel, where the beautiful wooden Crucifix was placed, now kept in the church of the Immaculate Conception. Along the walls of the central nave there are eighteenth-century paintings worth mentioning, respectively on the one on the right there is "The Adoration of the Magi" and on the one on the left the "Circumcision". The walls of the presbytery are also adorned with 18th century paintings depicting "The Adoration of the Shepherds" and "The Presentation of Mary in the Temple". Leaving the church, the façade has a slightly raised pediment and underlying decorations, the sandstone portal is framed by finely decorated pilasters and capitals surmounted by a projecting architrave. The front is completed by a large window with a stucco frame. On the sides, two of the four "broken-in" chapels are visible, characterized by covered domes and decorated with four concentric circles of tiles. On the long left elevation, at the back, the cylindrical bell tower is barely visible.

Over the centuries the church was expanded and restored until it reached its current form, completed and consecrated in 1774 by the Bishop of Crotone G. Capocchiani. The facade is divided into three registers, divided only by decorative elements. The portal, in classical-baroque style, has two pilasters resting on a high base, with a Doric capital surmounted by an entablature of the same style. In a small aedicule there is the statue of Santa Chiara. Inside there is an altar made of polychrome marble, flanked by marble putti. It is the work of a Calabrian school. (Translated by Google) Very nice One of the oldest churches in Crotone. "Built in the sixteenth century, it was consecrated on 31 October 1774 by the then bishop Giuseppe Capocchiani and restored at the end of the eighteenth century. A convent was part of the monastic complex, of which the bell tower, the cells, the terracotta flooring and the portico of the cloister, made of sandstone; a cistern with a puteale from 1616 was also found. After numerous transformations due to various changes of ownership, in 1889 a memorandum of handover of the monastery was signed to the Municipality of Crotone, which only took concrete possession of it in 1916, when the last three remaining nuns decided to abandon the convent as it was now dilapidated. In 1932, the transfer contract was stipulated between the Municipality of Crotone and the Episcopal Curia, with which the entire monastery returned to the ownership of the Curia monastery, partly used by the Stigmatine Fathers and the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, hosts the headquarters of the Cultural Heritage Office." (fonte: Wikipedia)

Nestled in the charming Pescheria district of Crotone's historic center, the Church of Saint Mary 'Protho-Spataris' is a delightful gem that dates back to the early 1500s. Named after the noble Prothospataris family, who hailed from Greek origins, this small church has served as an active parish since 1525. While it may not always be open to visitors, it welcomes worshippers during religious functions.

Built at the beginning of the sixteenth century, the church took its name from the noble Prothospataris family, which was very ancient in Calabria (long before the year one thousand) of Greek-Byzantine origin and then passed but resided in Crotone, where it was aggregated to the Seat of S Dionigi, and extinct with Elisabetta, Marchioness of Crucoli married in 1641 to Didaco Francesco Amalfitani. It became an active parish from 1525. After having been "disused" for a relatively long period, under Charles III of Bourbon, the parish was able to resume its parish functions again. In 1777 the church had two altars: one dedicated to San Luigi Gonzaga and another to San Gaetano. In 1960 the church was restored, but the two side altars and the paintings depicting the owners were removed. On Friday 2 June the icon of the Blessed Virgin of Help appeared from the door of the Sanctuary at 9.30 pm and it was a moving moment for all those present. Many interminable applause greeted the exit of the precious Painting from the sanctuary, while the sky, a few minutes later, was illuminated by the exceptional effects produced by the full-bodied fire of the company "La Pirotecnica Palermo". We then continued with the procession that accompanies the sacred effigy to the mother church of "San Giovanni Battista", after reaching the Piazza del Popolo and Carrera. On Saturday 3 June, the procession started from the main church and traveled along almost all the streets of the town, returning to the Sanctuary around 2pm. On Sunday 4 June the Holy Mass was celebrated by Don David Fiore, former parish priest of San Mauro, now of Cutro, who thanked and wished the faithful, the celebration committee and above all the parish priest Don Luca Belcastro and the nuns, amidst the applause of all those present. The local musical band of the "Armonia" association was present, directed by Maestro Luigi De Lorenzo, made up of 70 musicians. This year the "Giants of Taurianova" also participated in the party. Nestled in the heart of the town, the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista is a captivating blend of history and architecture. Constructed between 1837 and 1838, this parish church stands on a site that has been sacred since the 17th century. Over time, it has seen numerous renovations that have shaped its current form. The church features a prominent central body flanked by two lower wings, creating an elegant silhouette against the sky.
(Translated by Google) The current church was built between 1837 and 1838, although reports of a sacred building located in this same place date back to the 17th century. The parish church has undergone numerous changes and renovations over time. It has a higher central body placed between two lowered wings. In the sober main facade there are three portals, the central one has a stone arch. The church is flanked by a square-based bell tower with a clock. The interior has three naves and the main altar dates back to the 1970s (renovation). In the centre, in a marble frame surmounted by a broken tympanum, there is a large wooden crucifix brought from Lecce in 1914. In the left nave there is an altar dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari, while in the right nave a wooden statue is visible of San Vincenzo Ferreri. Furthermore, the professional statue of St. John the Baptist and the wooden sculptures of St. Michael the Archangel and St. Francis of Paola are kept, the latter made with the wood of a wild pear tree located in the left nave. Church obviously worth visiting for its well-preserved works.
