The National Memorial Chorten, a prominent Buddhist stupa in Thimphu, Bhutan, is a must-visit attraction. This iconic monument features a gilded spire and ornate portals, following Tibetan architectural style. It serves as a memorial to the third Bhutanese King and is dedicated to world peace. An iconic landmark of Thimpu, the National Memorial Chorten is a stupa constructed in memory of the Third King of Bhutan. Surrounded by prayer wheels, it’s place of worship and meditation for many Bhutanese people. It’s serene and a must visit when you’re in the city.

Beautiful garden with wisteria covering all the walls and the sound of tinkling bells coming from very large spinning bells. Built for world peace. Has a special feel to the whole place, and a lovely butter lamp temple in the grounds.
Rebecca M — Google review
When I visited the National Memorial Chorten in Thimphu, I immediately felt the deep sense of peace that everyone talks about. Located right in the heart of the city, this white stupa with its golden spire isn’t just a monument — it’s a living symbol of Bhutan’s devotion, faith, and love for its late Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, known as the Father of Modern Bhutan. Built in 1974 by his mother, Queen Phuntsho Choden Wangchuck, it was her way of fulfilling his wish to build a chorten representing the “mind of the Buddha.” As I walked around the stupa, I joined locals — elderly people, monks, and families — who were circumambulating clockwise, spinning large red prayer wheels and softly chanting mantras. The air was filled with the sound of fluttering prayer flags and the gentle ringing of bells, which gave the whole place an incredible sense of calm. It felt like time slowed down here; even in the center of busy Thimphu, this spot was pure serenity. Architecturally, the chorten is stunning. Its Tibetan-style design flares outward like a vase and gleams under the sunlight. Inside, each floor is filled with intricate paintings and statues — from fierce protector deities to serene Buddhas — all meant to guide the mind toward peace and enlightenment. Though photography isn’t allowed inside, the art and atmosphere stay with you long after you leave. What really touched me most was watching how deeply this place is woven into daily life. Locals come every morning and evening to pray, meditate, or just sit quietly — and as a visitor, you can’t help but feel moved by their devotion. The best time to visit, I found, is early morning or late afternoon when the light hits the golden spire and the energy feels especially spiritual. In the end, the National Memorial Chorten isn’t just something to see — it’s something to feel. It’s a place where Bhutan’s spirituality, culture, and history come together beautifully, and it left me with a lasting sense of peace and gratitude.
Weaning P — Google review
This memorial was built to honor Bhutan's third king. Very awesome and magnificent. Looks really majestic at night. Lots of local people visiting the place doing all sorts of activities - Turing the prayer wheel, going round and round the stupa while chanting at the same time, making prostrations in front of the stupa, taking photos, people watching.
GAN Y — Google review
Visiting Memorial Stupa often evokes a profound sense of reflection, peace, and connection. This place provides a serene atmosphere that encourages contemplation and spiritual growth. The architecture, art, and rituals associated with this stupa also offer a deep sense of history and tradition. For many, their visit to here is a way to connect with their faith, seek solace, or simply experience the spiritual and cultural significance of the place.

The National Memorial Chorten is a Stupa located in Thimphu and is said to be built in 1974 by Her Majesty Gyalyum Ashi Phuntsho Choden Wangchuck in memory of His Majesty, the Third Druk Gyalpo Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. With its golden spires and bells, this stupa is a sight to behold and is an important landmark in Thimphu city. Must visit if you are in Bhutan
Amenla L — Google review
We visited mid morning and there were already many locals either walking clockwise around the brilliant white building or sitting silently in a shady spot meditating. It was constructed in 1974 to honour the third king of Bhutan by the king’s mother. Well worth a visit when in Thimpu.

Interesting history behind building this place. It's got 3 levels inside that we can climb up inside the main sanctum and see although photos aren't allowed.

Sitting high on a hill overlooking the city, this magnificent golden statue is one of the largest Buddhas in the world and truly a sight to behold. The serene atmosphere surrounding the monument makes it a perfect place for quiet reflection, prayer, or simply taking in the incredible views of Thimphu Valley. The Buddha Dordenma statue is truly a sight to behold! Towering over Thimphu, it offers a sense of serenity and spiritual calm. The views of the city from here are absolutely stunning, especially during sunrise or sunset. The statue itself is majestic and beautifully crafted — one of the largest sitting Buddhas in the world. Inside the base, you’ll find thousands of smaller Buddha statues and peaceful meditation halls. The atmosphere is calm and respectful, with locals and tourists alike offering prayers. A must-visit when in Bhutan — not just for the views, but for the spiritual experience as well.

You would literally be in awe with the grandeur. Beautiful place with an amazing 360° view. Every corner is picturesque. Not allowed to click pictures inside the temple but you can click as many from the outside. The entire story of Gautam Buddha is narrated with the help of paintings and you would enjoy your time there.

I have Visited several times and every time found the place very peaceful with stunning views over Thimphu Valley. The site is well-maintained and offers a calm environment to walk around and enjoy the scenery. Definitely one of the best spots to see the city from above.

I came here for the Global Peace Prayer Festival. It is a tremendous event for the world peace and thousands of people aggregated here for peace blessing. I hope every sentient beings are all blessed and the Buddha light stay with you all.
Mars C — Google review
Very lucky to visit on the days of Global Prayer Festival. There was several hours long line for local pilgrims lining up to make offerings, however tourists like myself were allowed to enter from a side door without the wait. The event is very colorful with many temporary colorful towers erected in front of Buddha. There was also a large tent inside which monks were chanting, perhaps around 100 or more monks. Buddha itself is also quite interesting The base contains exposition of hubdrents of small Buddha's, wall paints. The base have few stories and I suggest to go up as there are some quite scarry and erotic looking sculptures on levels 3 and 4. I did enjoy offering to the dieties, walking around in th crowd, and visiting inside the Buddha base. My guide tried to explain me all the stories painted on the walls, but I fot quite confused with all th versions of dieties and Buddha's.

Folk Heritage Museum Kawajangsa, also known as Phelchey Toenkhyim, is a cultural treasure in Bhutan. Established in 2001 by the Queen Mother of Bhutan, it aims to preserve and showcase the country's folk culture. Housed in a restored 18th-century building, the museum offers educational programs and demonstrations to connect visitors with Bhutanese rural traditions. Visitors can explore antique exhibits and learn about traditional practices.
Nice place to visit. It will remind you the heritage of Bhutan. We enjoyed our visit. There is shop near the entrance. You can buy many stuffs from there. In the museum compound they made and sell corn burned wine. That was good.
Taimur T — Google review
We spent a few hours at the Folk Heritage Museum after enjoying a banquet lunch at the restaurant. We observed outdoor activities as our own tour guide showed us how mud brick dwellings were made by compaction. We then tried a dart game and then tried our hand at archery - which is the national sport of Bhutan. We then made our way inside the grounds of a traditional dwelling. We saw a woman weaving using a traditional loom. I bought a stunning wool piece from her that is now proudly a table runner in my home. It takes her 1 day to make each one and she sells direct to visitors which is fantastic as she gets all the earnings. Be careful of buying woven products downtown as they can be machine mass produced and imported from Nepal or China. Inside the dwelling we went up narrow ladders to the different floors, saw how grains were kept, the kitchen area and open fire for cooking and how all the family would live and sleep in the same room. There was also an impressive display of weaponry and agricultural equipment. On the way out we saw a man traditionally carving wooden face masks that are sold inside the artisans shop. It is wonderful to see these skilled craftspeople keeping up Bhutanese traditions.

The National Folk Heritage Museum (Phelchey Toenkhyim) in Thimphu, Bhutan, offers a living glimpse into the traditional rural life and culture of the Bhutanese people. Located in a restored 19th-century mud-and-timber farmhouse, the museum features exhibits, demonstrations, and educational programs. The restaurant located inside museum is an amazing place to taste local Bhutan food.
Sagar R — Google review
A good display of Bhutan's heritage. There is a restaurant inside the museum area which is nicely decorated and offers their traditional food. It's very expensive though. but it's a good experience. They even show you how traditional Bhutanese people eat with their utensils.
Bhavin K — Google review
A peaceful place that brings Bhutan’s rural past to life. Walking through the traditional courtyard, you get a real sense of how Bhutanese families once lived — mud floors, wood stoves, and homemade Ara on the shelf. The exhibits are simple but authentic, from traditional tools to local textiles and attire. The weaving display and regional patterns map are especially worth a look. You can even try the local wine, Ara — a homemade spirit most similar to sake, but with a Bhutanese twist.

Its always a pleasure to understand how our Culture have evolved to this present stage. When we see such Museums we understand what we were and what we are now. This Folk Heritage Museum of Bhutan is another good example of of preserving the old memories. The also make here the Traditional Wine here. The wine and some handicrafts etc. are sold here. There is also a restaurant here who serve Bhutan Dishes. I liked it and was amused also.

It’s a must-visit for anyone wanting to understand Bhutan’s roots and appreciate its timeless traditions. Fee: For Bhutanese 🇧🇹 Nu.100 per person For tourist Nu.300 per person Enjoy the culture 🙌🔥

We thoroughly enjoyed this experience. We went on a self guided tour of the traditional Bhutanese home. We were able to see everything at a leisurely pace in a little over one hour. It felt very authentic and we even tried our hand at archery. There is also a weaver who makes beautiful scarves and a woodworker. There is a restaurant for those that want a traditional dining experience. This museum is a gem in Thimphu and I would highly reccomend it.

The Royal Takin Preserve, situated in the Motithang district of Thimphu, is a wildlife reserve that offers trails for visitors to explore. This area is home to the takin, which holds significant religious importance in Bhutanese culture. According to local mythology, this unique creature was created by a Tibetan saint known as The Divine Madman.
The Royal Takin Preserve, officially known as the Motithang Takin Preserve, is a small yet significant wildlife reserve in Thimphu, Bhutan, dedicated to protecting the country’s national animal—the Takin. Spanning 3.4 hectares, the preserve was originally a mini-zoo but was transformed into a natural habitat in the early 1990s by royal decree, reflecting Bhutan’s values of compassion and conservation. Visitors to the preserve can enjoy close-up views of the Takins in their spacious enclosure, stroll along elevated walkways that offer great vantage points of both the animals and the scenic Thimphu valley, and spot other local species like sambar deer, muntjac, goral, serow, and yaks. The peaceful, forested surroundings make it a refreshing nature retreat within the city. Good job in preserving unique wildlife, serene environment, and conservation mission. Takin is a “must-see” symbol of Bhutan’s heritage. Overall, the Motithang Takin Preserve stands as a symbol of Bhutan’s harmony between nature, wildlife, and tradition, offering a tranquil and meaningful experience for nature lovers and cultural travelers alike.
Weaning P — Google review
This place is a preserved area. This was initially built as a small zoo but later it was converted into an animal preserve centre. This preserve is home to Takin, the national animal of Bhutan We had some good time walking around the trail in the park. There are some good climbs and slopes. It was like hiking. There is a Café on the trail. We had some nice coffee and pastries/cookies. It’s a peaceful place. We spent around one hour here.
Arun K — Google review
A unique and serene experience! The Royal Takin Preserve is a peaceful escape in the heart of nature. Seeing Bhutan’s national animal up close is truly special. The forest trail is quiet and refreshing. A must-visit in Thimphu!
Sidharth A — Google review
This reserve in itself felt like a mini trail. You need to cover the entire reserve on foot and I recommend to do that before the trek to tiger nest so it acts as a warm up. You see Takin and other animals and birds which you don't see otherwise. There is a cafe at the top, and you get plenty of options there. Overall a good experience.
Jhankruti B — Google review
This is a very enjoyable and efficient way to see much of the wildlife of Bhutan. The elevated walkway gives you great views of at least a dozen species. Try to get there early because the crowds quickly grow.
Jerry F — Google review
Nice and relaxing place to walk around and see some animals, including takin, deers yaks, mountain/blue goats, and some pheasants. It has a cafe after the entrance and another cafe at the end of the path. Public toilets also available.

Changangkha Lhakhang, a historic Buddhist temple in Thimphu, Bhutan, is a serene and culturally rich spiritual site. Built in the 12th century, it overlooks the city and is dedicated to Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Locals frequent the temple to seek blessings for their newborns and it also serves as a center for Buddhist education.
The temple is one of the oldest ones in bhutan and has massive following. The entry fees are 500..ample parking is available..toilets are a level below. A heritage temple not to be missed
Dr.Mohina K — Google review
Buddhist temple located at an upper valley of Thimphu overlooking Thimphu valley. It was built in the 12th century on a place chosen by Lam Phajo Drugom Zhipo. The temple is popular among tourists as well as locals. Bhutanese parents go there to get blessings and names for their newborn babies. Tourists seem to love it due to its hilltop location offering beautiful views of Thimphu. They get to turn prayer wheels, observe spitlritual devotion of Bhutanese, and also experience the feelings of being in a sacred place. Changangkha - Buddha Point Nature Trail also starts from its car park. It has the central worship figures of Avalokitesvara, its deity, and also Buddha.
Sherab T — Google review
I found visiting Changangkha Lhakhang in Thimphu to be quite underwhelming as a tourist. The entrance fee feels unnecessarily high and the temple doesn’t offer anything particularly unique compared to other temples in the area. The religious stories and scenic views are fairly ordinary, so it doesn’t stand out in any way. Unless you are trying to visit every temple in Thimphu, this one can easily be skipped.
Ganesh V — Google review
Changangkha Lhakhang is a compact temple complex located on the tip of a ridge that juts towards central Thimphu from the hills to the east. Founded in the 13th or 14th centuries, it is probably the oldest surviving temple in Thimphu. The main components and foundations of the monastery are extremely old, long predating the unification of Bhutan in the 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The temple is often frequented by parents with small children seeking to obtain blessings from the protective deity of the temple, Genyen Domtsangpa, who is considered to be the birth deity and protector of children born in JDWNRH national referral hospital in Thimphu.
WANG C — Google review
Changangkha Lhakhang, nestled in the heart of Thimphu, Bhutan, is a spiritual haven that encapsulates the essence of Bhutanese culture and Buddhism. My visit to this serene temple was nothing short of transformative, leaving an indelible mark on my soul. As I entered the temple premises, the aura of tranquility immediately enveloped me. The traditional Bhutanese architecture, adorned with intricate woodwork and colorful frescoes, transported me to a different era. The panoramic views of the city of Thimphu from the temple's vantage point were simply breathtaking, making it a perfect place for introspection and meditation. The highlight of my visit was the spiritual experience offered by the temple. As I circled the main prayer hall, the resonating chants of monks created an atmosphere of serenity. The inner sanctum, housing a magnificent statue of Chenrezig, exuded an aura of divinity that was both humbling and awe-inspiring. Participating in a puja with the local devotees allowed me to immerse myself in the profound Bhutanese Buddhist rituals, offering a unique glimpse into their way of life. What truly sets Changangkha Lhakhang apart is its deep-rooted connection with the local community. The temple serves as a spiritual anchor for Bhutanese families, with a traditional practice of bringing newborns here to receive blessings. Witnessing this heartwarming tradition, passed down through generations, was a testament to the temple's significance in the lives of the people. The friendly and welcoming demeanor of the monks added to the warmth of the experience. Engaging in conversations with them provided insights into their daily routines, spiritual pursuits, and the wisdom they've gathered over the years. Their willingness to share their knowledge and engage in discussions about Buddhism and life further enriched my visit. Changangkha Lhakhang's serene surroundings also make it a wonderful place for contemplation and meditation. The well-maintained garden areas and peaceful courtyards offer visitors a chance to connect with nature while seeking solace within the temple's sacred confines. The absence of the usual tourist crowds contributes to an undisturbed atmosphere that fosters reflection and inner peace. As I left Changangkha Lhakhang, I carried with me a sense of calm and a deeper understanding of Bhutanese spirituality. The temple's blend of architectural beauty, cultural significance, and spiritual resonance made it an unforgettable experience. Whether you're a devout follower of Buddhism or simply seeking a peaceful retreat in the heart of Thimphu, Changangkha Lhakhang is a must-visit destination that promises to nourish your soul and enrich your journey. In conclusion, Changangkha Lhakhang stands as a living testament to Bhutan's rich cultural heritage and profound spiritual legacy. Its captivating beauty, spiritual depth, and connection with the local community make it a place of profound significance. A visit to this temple is not just a touristic endeavor, but a transformative journey that leaves an imprint on your heart and soul. Marvellous Bhutan

The inside is beautifully decorated with silk lanterns and alters. I received a blessing from the chief abbot and was welcomed with tea and biscuits. It has a very special energy indeed.

Simtokha Dzong is one of the oldest dzongs in Bhutan and full of history. It has beautiful traditional architecture and a calm atmosphere. The views from the top are also lovely. A quiet and meaningful place to visit while in Thimphu!

This place was surreal. You are transported to a different world inside the temple. You wonder isn't this what places of worships were supposed to be like, awakening a sense of awe and making you feel humble. There are some beautiful art depecting the teaching of Buddha. Lots of diya's, prestine, sparkling. A giant Buddha sitting in meditation, ozzing pure bliss.

Visited in June 2023. Simtokha Dzong, aka Sangak Zabdhon Phodrang which means "Palace of the Profound Meaning of Secret Mantras", is a small dzong. It was built in 1629 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, who unified Bhutan. It is an important historical monument and former Buddhist monastery. Currently, it is one of the premier Dzongkha language learning institutes.

Although certainly not one of the more visually striking or impressive dzongs in Bhutan, this one happens to be the oldest. There is a lot of history in this place, being built by the first Chief Abbott of Bhutan who unified the country. There are also nice views of the valleys below and the mountains above. I would definitely recommend visiting here as it will give you a lot of historical information and context which will help you with some of the other sites you will visit later in your trip.

Its extensive collection includes manuscripts, books, scriptures, and written documents. Additionally, it preserves hand-carved wooden blocks used for printing traditional religious texts. The library also serves as the repository for national archives of Bhutan and houses a significant number of Tibetan and Bhutanese texts and manuscripts.
Bhutan established the National library in the year of 1967 or so. This beautiful building is situated in the Kawajangsa area of Thimphu, above the Royal Thimphu Golf Course and near to the Folk Heritage Museum and is easily recognisable from the facade. It is one of the most visited places of the country.

A very small library and museum located across the road from the Heritage Folk Museum. There isn't a huge amount of the collection with English signs, a lot of manuscripts and scrolls in Bhutanese language. There is the largest book in the world as recognised by The Guiness Book of Records. We spent about 20 minutes looking around but didn't go upstairs. Outside was a very large Bhutanese National Flag that looked very impressive flapping in the wind.

It’s a small library in Thimphu but earns the honour as a national institution of Bhutan. The collection is predominantly in Bhutanese language with some in English. The flower beds at the entrance are excellent. One has to take out the shoes before entry. However, photography is possible. A significant attraction at this place is an enormous sized published book. It contains only a hundred and forty-four pages. But, a new page is flipped through once in a month. Thus to appreciate the entire volume, a viewer will need twelve years! As expected, the library had a desolate look. Was it a reflection of redundancy of printed material?

Simply Bhutan is a museum in Bhutan that offers a unique experience resembling a traditional Bhutanese village. Visitors can enjoy traditional cuisine, demonstrations, and performances while immersing themselves in the rich cultural and historical heritage of the kingdom. The museum provides an interactive way to explore and understand the traditions, arts, and royal history of Bhutan.
I loved this mini Bhutan tour, it was amazing... especially I loved the part where we witnessed their Traditional dance with their food. And engaging us to dance with them. Wine Tasting was also good... unlimited wine we can take to taste it. Second appreciation for the guide we had, Sonam He was great at his work, he explained all the details properly and was engaging with guests in a fun way which made my guests happy and they enjoyed his company. Next best part was the Archery game and the celebration. Hope to visit Bhutan soon and enjoy simply Bhutan again.!!!!

The experience is beautifully organized — with live demonstrations, cultural performances and displays of traditional utensils and artifacts. Each group is accompanied by a friendly guide who explains the significance and stories behind everything, making the visit truly engaging. The local dance and music performances are soothing and captivating, giving you a glimpse into Bhutan’s cultural soul. The visit concludes with a fun opportunity to try your hand at archery — a perfect way to end this immersive cultural experience. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Bhutan and wanting to understand the country beyond its scenic beauty!

Amazing experience while exploring the live museum which gracefully showed the culture of Bhutan. The guide Gita explained very graciously Tried their butter Tea , Ara , yellow rice ( Meethi bhaat) Amazing dance performance by the locals Definitely a must visit experience Although the ticket price at 1000/- was a bit high in my opinion.

Is an interactive living museum that gives one an introduction to various aspects of traditional life in Bhutan. A place to experience and see replicas of traditional house building, archery, cooking, dancing. Firstly, visitors are served the traditional rice wine, Ara. I like the demonstration of how butter tea is made. One can try out archery, testing your throwing skills by tossing coins into a wishing well, see traditional musical instruments, cooking utensils and containers in the kitchen.
GAN Y — Google review
As the name placard says, Simply Bhutan is a living museum. It shows life in Bhutanese village - how they build house, cook (utensils used), prepare butter tea, store food, their traditional dance, art, and sports (archery). They serve arra (a sort of rice wine) as welcome drink in a small bowl to taste (not for kids). You can drink more if you like it. This is done in batches when it is crowded and you might to have to wait for some time for your turn to get in after buying the ticket. Simply Bhutan's staff are the guides here. All the staff are dressed in traditional dress of Kira(women) and Go(men). They show how they preserve butter in bamboo boxes for months! (The temperature is pretty low in Thimpu, probably that helps in preserving). You can donate to a disabled artist if you'd like. They then make us seated in sofas and men and women dance to Bhutanese songs. We are served (including kids) butter tea and sweet rice. After couple of dance, we're given opportunity to dance with them (to watch and follow). It was fun! Next, we get chance to try archery. If you manage to hit the target board, they perform a victory dance for you! There's a wishing pond at the exit. You take 5 coins and they spin an empty bowl on top of water. You make a wish and try to throw the coin inside bowl. It's said that if the coin falls and stays inside the bowl, your wish will come true! It was a great way to visualize and experience Bhutanese culture. A lot of people depend on tourism for their livelihood and the cost of living is high(a traditional dress costs 7000inr and upwards!), so I understand the expensive entry fees. Here, I felt it was worth it.

Nestled in the picturesque mountainous landscape of Thimphu, Bhutan, Dechen Phodrang Monastery, also known as the Palace of Great Bliss, is a significant Buddhist complex. This historical site houses centuries-old chapel murals and artifacts dating back to the 12th century. The monastery has evolved into a monastic school with over 450 student monks enrolled in eight-year courses.
A wonderful sacred site in the Northern part of Thimphu with a picturesque panorama over the Dzong of Thimphu. Lopen Tshechu Rinpoche's Kudung was there for while, hence, we went there for a visit. Absolutely worth to go. Do not miss to go around the Lhakhang. Interesting Stupa and stones and new angles of panoramas

Hidden Gem of Tranquility in Thimphu Bechen Phodrang Monastery is a peaceful and lesser-known spiritual retreat tucked away in the hills of Thimphu. The monastery offers stunning panoramic views of the valley and is surrounded by natural beauty, making it a perfect spot for quiet reflection and prayer. The monks here are kind and welcoming, and the atmosphere is calm and meditative. It’s not as crowded as other tourist spots, which makes the experience even more authentic and special. If you’re looking to explore Bhutan beyond the main attractions, this monastery is a must-visit for spiritual and cultural depth.

The Royal Botanical Garden Serbithang, located in Lamperi just 30 kilometers from Thimphu, is a haven for nature enthusiasts and plant lovers. This expansive garden spans 120 square kilometers and serves as a biological corridor between two national parks. It boasts a diverse collection of plants, including native species like rhododendrons, primulas, magnolias, ornamental plants, herbs, and medicinal plants.
Want some refreshment from your busy life, than this is the the place you might want to visit, it is peaceful with beautiful view and refreshing air. Varieties of flowers and if your with child they also have small children parks where child can play while you refresh yourself. Dropped by the botanical garden in Serbithang , hoping for a refreshing nature experience just outside Thimphu. While the setting is peaceful and the space has real potential, it felt like it still has a long way to go. The garden needs more diverse and vibrant plant collections, better signage, and regular maintenance to match what you'd expect from a national-level botanical space. For the entry fee charged, the experience didn’t quite feel worth it—yet. With a little more love and attention, this place could become a truly beautiful spot for locals and tourists alike. Here’s hoping it blossoms in time!

The Royal Botanical Garden in Serbithang is a tranquil escape just 15 kilometers from Thimphu. Spanning 28 acres, the garden was established in 1999 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. It's a delightful spot for nature lovers, featuring a diverse array of Bhutan's native plants, including over 600 species of orchids and various rhododendrons. A highlight is the serene Japanese Garden and the charming Rose Garden. The site also offers a small viewpoint where one can enjoy stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape. It's a perfect place for a leisurely walk, a picnic, or simply to relax and soak in the beauty of Bhutanese flora. Accessing the garden is straightforward, with options to rent a car or take a taxi from Thimphu, making it an ideal day trip. The garden is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, and visiting during spring provides a particularly enchanting experience with blooms in full display. Overall, the Royal Botanical Garden at Serbithang is a must-visit for anyone seeking a peaceful retreat amidst nature, away from the hustle and bustle of Thimphu.
Akashdeep D — Google review
It's a peaceful nature walk among a variety of beautiful trees, flowers, and other plants. I don't recommend visiting it during winter as it's mostly dry, cold, and windy. Though the garden authority permits having an open-air picnic with family and friends, again, winter isn't a time for it. The area isn't so huge. There are a few slides, swings, and rides for kids, cafeteria, and canopies. The entry isn't free. The tickets cost different for adults, children, foreigners, SAARC country citizens.
Sherab T — Google review
Royal Botanical Garden is the perfect place for nature lovers. Away from city crowd and noise it is the place to experience peace. The garden is on full bloom in May and June. You can see amazing varieties of flowers and trees in the garden. The entrance of the garden is beautifully decorated. There are many landscapes. Many birds and beautiful butterflies are there. A view point is there from where you can see the the city view and Buddha Point. It is a nice place to enjoy a picnic day with your family and especially with kids. There is a small cafeteria where you can get tea, coffee and snacks.

Nothing great that I found in the botanical garden. They haven't even displayed the names of different plants/trees available there, so it's difficult to identify the flora . Centenary Farmers Market, located in Thimphu, Bhutan, is a bustling two-story building with around 400 stalls where farmers from across the country showcase their fresh produce. The market is at its liveliest from Thursday to Sunday when vendors from the region gather to sell their goods. This vibrant hub near the Wang Chhu River offers an authentic glimpse into Bhutanese daily life and provides an opportunity to interact with locals while discovering traditional ingredients of the Bhutanese diet.
Beautiful and super clean farmers market located in the southern part of Thimpu. I've been to a lot of produce markets around Asia and never seen one this modern and well presented. In fact we dont even have anything like this in Australia. I went at about 4pm in the afternoon and there was still a lot of activity. All the stall holders take a lot of pride in the presentation of their produce. All the fruit and vegetables looked super fresh. If I was a local, this is where I would be doing my daily food shop for dinner.

I was only in Thimpu for a day and didn’t get to visit the market until the morning of my departure. Unfortunately the market only opens at 9am which seems a little late for fresh produce market. At 8am, vendors were unloading their produce and setting up their booths. It’s a bright, spacious and clean market. There were vegetables (a lot of chilies), fruits and dried seafood.
Ling — Google review
I visited the Centenary Farmers Market on a Monday around 3 PM. Most of the vendors were there, and the stalls were beautifully arranged, everything neat and spotless. The produce looked fresh, often pre-packed into bags — something I hadn’t really seen at other markets. But despite the perfect presentation, the market felt strangely empty. There were hardly any shoppers, and it was missing that lively, buzzing vibe I usually associate with local markets. It’s definitely a beautiful place and worth seeing, but don’t expect a bustling atmosphere — at least not on a weekday afternoon.

One of the best experiences to have in Bhutan. It has an exclusive facility of getting your personalised valid Bhutanese postage stamps. We were 11 pax in the group and we all got ourselves 1 personalised postage stamp. We also posted some postcards to our hometown. It was a lifetime experience to have the postage stamp of your own. I love this idea by the Bhutan government..

The Sangaygang View Point, also known as the BBS Tower or Bhutan Broadcasting Service Tower, is situated at an elevation of approximately 9400 feet. It provides a breathtaking vantage point to admire the entire Thimphu Valley from above. Renowned for its stunning panoramic vista, this location attracts numerous tourists and is considered one of the top destinations in Thimphu.
One of the best spots to enjoy the panoramic views and the beauty of Thimphu town and the mountains and valleys in its vicinity. The hilltop is full of colorful Buddhist prayer flags. It's also from here that we can start a hike towards Choekhortse and Wangditse Monasteries. In a few meters, there is a takin zoo where we can get a ticket for Nu.50 to see the national animal of Bhutan and also a few mountain deers. I can only imagine how wonderful the views would be in the evening when the whole Thimphu valley is in light.

On our way back from Buddha Dordenma Statue to Thimpu city, we stopped at this designated viewpoint... offering a panoramic birds's view of Thimphu city and its surrounding hills. It was nice spending some time here, and it's a good spot to click pictures. I personally found the view of Thimphu valley better from Tashichho Dzong Viewpoint, which is further down the hill, and where we stopped later.

It is about 20 minutes drive from the capital city. From this viewpoint, we could get a amazing view of entire city of Thimphu and its surrounding mountains. There is even a small open gym and the road to this viewpoint is commonly used in the morning and evening for outdoor exercise. There are colourful prayer flags and pine trees within this area. This place is one of the best spot for photographing the entire city of Thimphu. There is nothing more to do at this place so just having a brief visit sounds good. I visited this place after visiting the Takin zoo as they are close to each other. I really enjoyed the view and the fresh air. Time of travel: July 2018

Kuensel Phodrang View Point, also known as Buddha point, is a must-visit destination in Thimphu. It offers a stunning panoramic view of the entire Thimphu valley and the city below. The highlight of this location is the largest statue in Bhutan, where visitors can offer prayers and admire its grandeur. This spot provides an excellent opportunity to witness the unique blend of traditional and modern culture that defines Thimphu.
One of the popular viewpoints in Buddha Point Nature Park. Is located a 1km or so away from Buddha Point and is below Changangkha - Buddha Point Nature Trail. We can get good bird-eye views of Thimphu Valley. People also hoist prayer flags, and the hill has become beautiful with so many colorful Buddhist prayer flags. There is a picnic table and bench if you want to have a meal or a simple tea-snack session with that view. However, it is windy and cold in the evenings. Young couples or lovers in Thimphu go for dates. There used to be a nice canopy, but now it's no more. Take warm clothes if you go in the afternoons. The trail going to it is wide, short, and well-maintained. We can also take small kids or dogs with us for the walks.

Nestled in the serene Zilukha area of Thimphu, the Thangthong Dewachen Dupthop Nunnery, also known as Anim Dratsang, is a captivating destination for those exploring Bhutan. Established in 1976 by Drubthob Rikey Jadrel, this Buddhist nunnery offers young girls an opportunity to immerse themselves in Buddha's teachings from as early as age ten.
Girls as young as 10, can choose to study the way of life in Buddha's teachings here. After 9 years of rigorous Buddhist training, these girls will become "master" nuns and can then go back to their villages to teach. To become a lama, will require many more years. What I observed during my visit, was that the nuns are very proactive, keeping the site as clean as possible. Cleaning, wiping and sweeping all the time.

Buddha Point, located in Thimphu, is a must-visit destination featuring a large golden statue and intricately decorated interiors. To reach this stunning site, visitors can take a cab to Kuenselphodrang and enjoy the picturesque 25-minute ride from town. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are hiking trails from Changangkha Temple that offer breathtaking views of Thimphu city and lead to the iconic Buddha Statue.
It's a short 7.25km nature trail between Changangkha Lhakhang and Kuenselphodrang Buddha Point. It's well maintained - adequately appropriate for running, biking, and walking. It can be started either from Buddha Point or Changangkha Lhakhang. The trail runs through the spare forest of pine trees overlooking scenic views of major parts of Thimphu. However, I don't hike this trail during winter and also during autumn. Forest fire during winter and sighting of bears make it risky to be hiked, especially alone.

Right after enjoying Buddha Dordenma, my guide took me to this trail, starting very close to Buddha Dordenma. Normally it takes about an hour but because I was a snail and I took too many pictures, I did the trail for about 2-2,5 hours in total 🤣. Visitors can marvel at an impressive collection of textiles that highlight intricate designs and vibrant colors, showcasing both historical artifacts and contemporary creations.
The best place to know more about Bhutan's traditional home-based textile and embroidery industries. We can watch videos on those traditional arts or watch personally a few women weaving highly-priced ghos or Kiras; national dresses of Bhutan. The entrance displays a giant Thongdrel of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel - the founder of Bhutan. We can also see frames of beautiful birds, flowers, royal families, gift shops, and art/craft products from various parts of Bhutan. The visit was short. It was such an experience. There's no need to rush or hurry here - instead, you can take your time, savoring every moment as you explore the peaceful beauty of this incredible valley.
