Bistro
Mannion & Co is a charming rustic-chic cafe and deli with multiple locations in North Yorkshire, including one on Blake Street in York. The cafe offers a pleasant garden area, making it perfect for large groups during the summer. Their on-site deli inspires the menu's charcuterie boards and cheese slates, as well as provides an array of fresh bread. The establishment prides itself on great coffee, a wide selection of sandwiches, and being dog-friendly.
Went in on Wednesday morning around 10am there was a few tables in already, we were met with a warm welcome and given a choice of tables to sit. We were regularly checked on, the service was quick and the food was hot and fresh. I got the full English minus mushrooms and black pudding. Eggs could have been a bit runnier but you can’t be perfect every time. Cappuccino was excellent and I’ve never tried that biscuit before but it was nice! Testament to its reputation for good food all the tables were full by the time we left!

1) Food was amazing. We got the pork belly sandwich which was delicious. the pork belly was so soft and tender. the pork crackling was so good! Crisp and crunchy. The truffle fries were crispy and you can taste the hints of truffle. Delicious. 2) staff were lovely. They were just so friendly and one noticed I had used up my napkin to wrestle with the sandwich so she brought me another one, it’s just little things like that. I would totally come back again if I’m in York. Just a cute little shop with delicious food and good people.

Superb breakfast. Covered terrace area so we could have our dog with us there. Service friendly and very knowledgeable about allergies and menu choice. I'm gluten intolerant and almost all the menu could be adapted. Delicious.
Jemima W — Google review
Really nice locally owned cafe! We had the chicken tikka sandwich on their homemade bread! Menu is small and quite unique so fussier eaters might struggle though there is a note that they are happy to make things off menu if they can! Prices are slightly higher than normal for sandwiches but likely similar to the area. A little cramped inside hence the 4 star for atmosphere. Really worth a visit if you like a unique and different menu as I do!

Lovely food , friendly staff , good beer Music a bit too loud as we were under the speaker , but an amazing experience so far
Matteo S — Google review
Wide variety on the menu. Everything was fresh and easily the best meal of our visit. The bread is rustic and delicious. The staff are attentive, excellent service. Highly recommend!
Rosemarie S — Google review
Got their sausage and cheese mamik and plain croissant which had a sugar glaze on top (would of preferred it plain without this) both were good. Sausage roll was meaty and the pastry flaky.
CL V — Google review
Went in for lunch which was delicious. Managed to get seated straight away. Menu on a blackboard on the wall, The Yorkshire Welsh rarebit was amazing as was the fruit scone. Staff were very attentive, friendly and polite. Although the restaurant was busy we didn’t feel rushed. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back when I visit York again.

Bistro
Breakfast restaurant
Cafe No.8 Bistro is a stylish restaurant with an intimate atmosphere and a charming walled garden, offering creative and traditional dishes from fixed-price set menus. The bistro has earned a strong reputation for its simple yet perfectly prepared cuisine, with an Italian trattoria influence. Guests can enjoy the inviting ambiance and warm welcome by the friendly front-of-house manager and co-owner, Martin Gore.
Been here a few times for Sunday lunch and it has never let me down. Today I had beautifully cooked beef with a bucket load of gravy, a glass of red and all the trimmings. Personal, small and independent and the staff are very friendly. I would advise you to book in advance.
Ewan T — Google review
Food was fantastic. Good attention to detail to flavours and presentation, very tasty vegetarian options too. Came quickly. Customer service was also very good - all staff were friendly and attentive. General atmosphere could use some work - it seems very understated but maybe that's the appeal. I think some extra colours and photographable features may help bring attention to the place. Overall enjoyed the experience and would come again.
Sun P — Google review
We both had a lovely meal to celebrate our anniversary. A "proper restaurant" that strikes exactly the right balance of doing excellent food, without feeling too formal. They also have vegetarian and gluten-free options which is good on a small menu. Excellent wine, starters, mains and desserts.

Fantastic restaurant. Really interesting and varied menu. Food is beautifully presented and tastes amazing. Staff are very friendly. So pleased to have found Bistrot no. 8 and will definitely be back.
Deb S — Google review
I visited Cafe No 8 before Covid and really loved the food. They shorten their operation hours after Covid and we finally made it for Sunday lunch today. We had a starter, mains and dessert. The food was just as good as I remembered. Service was good too. This place just celebrated their 20 years' anniversary in York which tells you that they got to be good to last that long given the ultra competitive food scene here. The food was of top quality, refined and cooked with care. We had beef and pork tenderloin and they were so tender. The potatoes were roasted perfectly. And we had a selection of vegetables (Broccolini, Parsnip, Carrots, Spring Onions etc) not over cooked like many places. And I was so glad to try the Dark Belgian Chocolate Truffle with Black Sesame Ice Cream. I love black sesame ice cream but is a rarity to find them in York. I wish I could buy a tub of their black sesame ice cream and bring it home. If you are looking for a place with a relaxed atmosphere, serving non-pretentious and delicious food, I recommend Cafe No 8 Bistro.
Gwendelene F — Google review
We enjoyed a lovely early evening meal here and would highly recommend. A small but interesting menu, high quality ingredients, beautifully cooked and presented. Add the welcoming atmosphere and great service and you really can't go wrong. House wine is outstanding too! Will definitely return on our next visit to York.

Just passed on the off chance and popped in when visiting York for the first time and so glad we did! Food absolutely delicious, my husband and I wolfed ours down and thoroughly enjoyed! Service excellent and friendly and prices reasonable. If we visit York again we would pop in again.

Art cafe
Breakfast restaurant
Partisan is a charming and trendy cafe located in York's historic Micklegate area. During the day, it operates as a cozy coffee shop with a rustic ambiance, offering an all-day breakfast and lunch menu featuring diverse and seasonal dishes. In the evening, it transforms into a restaurant with carefully curated menus that change weekly. The cafe also hosts art exhibitions and prides itself on providing an indulgent dining experience while valuing seasonality and quality ingredients.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely delightful experience! Patisian in York is a hidden gem. The brunch and pastries are not only delicious but truly exceptional, crafted with evident care and creativity. I had the Sobrasada toast, and let me tell you, it was an astronomical experience. Yes, it's "just" toast, but it was bursting with flavour and soul. You can really taste the love and dedication in every bite. The place itself is adorable: cute, artistic, and full of charm. The staff are incredibly kind, mainly women, profeaaional and welcoming atmosphere. Service was top-notch from start to finish. Highly recommend for anyone looking to indulge in a memorable brunch in York.

Colorful soup is very thick, taste strong and salty . The bread is too hard to bite. Scramble egg is ok but the same problem (bread is too hard to bite).I am really disappointed the food. Staff are very nice. Entrance is a bit narrow. Hard for wheelchair to go through. Would recommend just buy some cakes and takeaway. Some fresh flowers sell in front of the main door which is nice. I would not recommend to dinning in.

Everything about this cafe was great. Me and a friend had some time to kill before heading off to a wedding and it was a great introduction to York. Food was delicious with decent portion sizes and reasonable price. The garden area out back is lovely and so were all the staff. Picked up a pastry to go too which was great.
Alistair S — Google review
Came here for lunch with some colleagues as we were in a meeting room nearby. We sat out the back in their covered marquee area which was nice. All the staff we interacted with were really friendly. I had the Ham and cheese toastie which was really good. Loads of cheese, loads of ham, in lovely thick crispy bread which I think had been fried so was all lovely and greasy from the cheese. Said it was served with 'home fries' but was really small potatoes that were fried so were lovely and soft, however there really wasn't many of them. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food. Although the food was really good, I'd say that £17 for a ham and cheese toastie is a bit much. Luckily work was paying, but I'm not sure I could justify that if I was paying myself, when you can get a proper meal in a restaurant for the same price.

Really cute and unique cafe in York near the railway station! Some of the chefs are Mexican and Argentinian and you can really tell the influence in the food. It’s such a fun menu with decent portion sizes and really fast service. The bakery counter is also lush! We tried: Spanish eggs 10/10! Pistachio Victoria sponge 10/10! Spanakopita 10/10! Kimchi sausage roll 8/10! Can not wait to come back and try the rest of the menu on my next visit up!!

Discovering Partisan Cafe: A Culinary Gem Worth the Wait! If you’re looking for a delightful dining experience that combines indulgent flavors with top-notch service, look no further than Partisan Cafe. Nestled just a 10-minute walk from the station, this charming eatery has quickly become a favorite among locals and visitors alike. **A Taste of Excellence** From the moment you step inside, the inviting atmosphere sets the stage for a culinary adventure. The menu is a treasure trove of delectable options, with an impressive selection for both vegetarian and vegan diners. Whether you're craving a hearty meal or a light snack, Partisan Cafe delivers big portions that will satisfy any appetite. One of the highlights of my visit was the French toast. It was nothing short of amazing! Perfectly golden-brown and fluffy, it was topped with delicious fruits and a drizzle of maple syrup that made each bite heavenly. It’s a must-try that will leave you dreaming of your next visit. **Service That Shines** The service at Partisan Cafe truly stands out. The staff is attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, ensuring that every guest feels welcomed and well taken care of. Even with the long queue outside, the team manages to keep the atmosphere lively and pleasant, making the wait worthwhile. **A Space to Enjoy** The ambiance is cozy and inviting, with a great space at the back that’s perfect for relaxing with friends or family. However, given its popularity, the lack of a waiting area can be a bit challenging during peak times. An expansion next door would be a fantastic addition, allowing more guests to enjoy this culinary haven without the wait. **Final Thoughts** In conclusion, Partisan Cafe is a definite must-visit for anyone in the area. With its indulgent food, excellent service, and vibrant atmosphere, it’s easy to see why patrons are willing to wait in line for a table. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, make sure to stop by and experience the magic for yourself. You won’t be disappointed!

I was really looking forward to trying a classic English breakfast, but unfortunately, this experience fell short. For the price, I expected much better quality. The bread was tough and nearly inedible, the chorizo was overwhelmingly salty, and the eggs were sadly overcooked. Overall, it was a disappointing meal that didn’t live up to the promise, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Lovely spot for brunch with great flavours and a cosy vibe. The menu is creative, though it can get quite busy, so expect a bit of a wait.

Located in a picturesque spot by the River Ouse, The Star Inn The City is a popular restaurant offering modern British cuisine. With a diverse all-day menu that changes weekly to highlight seasonal ingredients, this brasserie-style eatery aims to bring the countryside's taste to the city. Inspired by Andrew Pern of the Michelin-starred Star Inn at Harome, it prides itself on using locally-sourced ingredients to create delectable dishes.
We tried our very first Yorkshire Pudding here and it absolutely lived up to the hype! Crisp on the outside, soft and satisfyingly chewy on the inside, and soaked in a rich, flavorful gravy that was generously ladled on. My daughter and I shared one, a decision we soon regretted — some delights are simply not meant to be split! For mains, the lamb was the clear standout — tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. The portion was on the smaller side, so don’t come expecting to be stuffed, but it was truly delightful. The beef was also very good, soft and tasty, though the lamb still stole the show. All in all, this was easily one of our best meals in York. We’d come back in a heartbeat.

Been here several times and have never been disappointed. Latest visit was a Sunday evening for a family celebration. The place has a lovely interior and has views to the river and park and there's a great outside terrace overlooking the river. The menu is varied and has some really interesting dishes. Everything we ate was delicious and the venison was outstanding. Prices aren't cheap but good value for the quality/location. Highly recommended

Wow. This was our first visit and won't be our last! The restaurant is beautiful, the staff are amazing and the food was perfect. We visited as two adults and two kids and the staff were fantastic with the kids, making them laugh and including them in the ordering process. The portions were extremely generous and every bring was fresh, hot and full of flavour. There honestly isn't a bad thing to say about this place, even the toilets are pretty!!
Sarah J — Google review
We have been waiting for a long time to have a meal at The Star sinn The City, so excited, but we did a high expectation, and end up with disappointment. The food is very average not impressive or very tasty. The porter is more like small but OK. The service is very very slow. Be honest, we don’t like the service but they still put 20% service charge on the bill, can’t believe it. There are so many restaurants in York, and this is the one I will not go back again. The price is expensive, I think we paid for Michelin not the experience. Really disappointed.

Called in for a coffee stop down by the river. It was so nice we went back later for Sunday Roast. The best roast dinner I've had. Absolutely delicious, but of course we are in Yorkshire.
Deb S — Google review
Been here so many times over the years and never been disappointed! Had the yorkie pud starter and ox cheek main… both amazing. Honestly most amazing thing about this place is the service. It’s clear the management really care about good customer service as nothing is ever too big of an ask for any service staff. This time we had Lumi and she was no different, amazing service and went completely out of her way to make sure our drinks and food were exactly how we liked.
Hannah S — Google review
I read the reviews and thought we would give it a go as we were in York for a short break. Saturday lunchtime at 1pm in early November, it wasn't very busy. Service good and in good time so nothing to complain about there. Food was good, not amazing and for the price I was certainly expecting better. I had the burger which was on the specials, nice burger but I would expect for the price home made chips not the French fries served up.

Pairings Wine Bar, located in York near Cliffords Tower, is a cozy and stylish spot offering a wide selection of fine wines, cocktails, whisky, gin, and beer. Run by sisters Kelly and Kate, this award-winning wine bar provides a relaxed table service experience with an emphasis on pairing drinks with locally sourced cheese, charcuterie, and small plates.
We came to celebrate my mums birthday and she absolutely loved it! Our server was lovely and gave us helpful advice on which flights to choose based on the food we’d picked, we ended up going with everything he recommended! We got the deli platter, olives and a chicken apple salad to share between three and it was the perfect amount! The wines were lovely and the selection was great. They even gave my mum a birthday card, and we’d asked them to bring out a macaroon I had bought and given to them beforehand and they presented it so well it was a really lovely touch. Definitely recommend!

Just Wow…. What a find. We were recommended to come here by a friend and we were not disappointed. Fish sharing board amazing and plenty of food for two. The wine recommendation from the lovely lady who served us was spot on. We also had a chicken salad and a trio of desserts with the dessert wine pairing and again cannot fault presentation. Portion sizes spot on. Produce great. Wine perfect and the whole atmosphere fantastic. Every member of staff we spoke to was really friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. We cannot wait to try again and recommend a visit.

Absolutely amazing lunch at Pairings. We sat at the bar and everything about our time there was perfect. Our server, Connor, was personable, friendly and gave us great recommendations. We enjoyed the mackerel pate, followed by the Mediterranean board…all accompanied with delicious wine. Can’t wait for our next visit!

Returned to Pairings after visiting last 3y ago. It was worth the wait. Food and wine was fantastic. We had a Deli sharing platter and a wine flight. What I love is how unfussy this place is. Great quality food and drink but really accessible. Staff are really friendly and welcome questions to help you find what you’d like and unpick the menu. Very reasonably priced for the quality.

Simply sensational, was recommended Pairings by a friend and it didn’t disappoint. We went for a late lunch on my wife’s birthday and had a fantastic time. The food comes as a variety of charcuterie boards with choices of meat, fish, cheese or various mixes. Everything we ordered was delicious and of the highest quality. We simply couldn’t find fault with anything.

The Rattle Owl is a charming restaurant located in a historic 17th-century Grade building, offering a unique dining experience with its modern New York loft ambiance. The establishment, led by Clarrie O'Callaghan and Jamie Hall, sources locally to create creatively inspired dishes. The menu features international flavors and American ingredients, resulting in interesting and delicious options like the Georgia shrimp roll or pesto gnocchi.
A perfect Sunday Lunch. Beautiful food, great service and generous portions. The photos show it all but have to add that the flavours were great and loved the way staff explained dishes to you. Also liked the way they offered more "well done" versions of the meat (not an issue for us but table next to us appreciated it)

Absolutely loved our experience!!!! As it was for a special occasion we decided to try the 8 course taster menu and we were so glad we did !!!!! Each and every course was thoughtfully constructed and cooked superbly, they have some seriously talented chefs in the kitchen and lovely front of house staff who were knowledgeable and provided excellent service! They treated us better than our supposed 5* hotel did! Seriously impressed with this place and as we visit York often I would love to go again! For foodies who like to be surprised and don't mind trying things out of their comfort zone I would absolutely recommend!!! Thanks to all at The Rattle Owl ... you were all ace!!!!! :)

Had the tasting 'menu', which was very nice. The drinks pairings (only a few are red/white wines) are excellent and work very well with the food, making this a distinctive experience. Ridiculously, they don't tell you what you actually get to eat other than the announcement when they bring it to the table, just the drinks pairings and a suppliers list are printed (you might think you're missing something on the website, you're not).

I have been here twice The first time I never got around to writing a review. The second visit was as good as the first and there was great food excellent service and a fantastic experience all round. Excellent Sunday dinner both times and fantastic value. Next time though really want to try doing the evening tasting menu sometime.

A warm welcome and fast & friendly service at this award winning restaurant. Small menu but very good selection and every dish we ordered was wonderfully presented and delicious. The restaurant was quiet and lacked atmosphere but we were grateful to secure a reservation and thank you to Alex & team. Prices are high but well worth it. We’ll be back

This restaurant deserves to be on the Michelin Guide immediately, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they received their first star in the coming year or two. Stunning 8 course tasting menu with wine pairing, full of creativity and locally sourced ingredients. The service quality, local source and creativity, and flavour pallets compares to all the Michelin starred restaurants I’ve been to in the UK. We had minor dietary restrictions and the servers and chefs took great care of us. The highlight of our stunning weekend to York. Thank you!

The evening didn't start well, I must admin, since the restaurant isn't exactly spacious. It's one long corridor, and we got seated at the very end of it, by the fire exit, in a somewhat claustrophobic space. But we quickly forgot about it once the food arrive. On Sundays they have Sunday roast until the evening, and it was something special. The food was absolutely amazing, tender, and full of flavour. So I would fullheartedly recommend this restaurant.

Goji Cafe Vegetarian Cafe & Deli, located on Goodramgate, is a charming spot offering organic and mostly vegan fare from breakfast to dinner. The cafe takes pride in using locally sourced and organic produce, ensuring the quality of their dishes. With a predominantly vegan menu, they cater to vegetarians and vegans with an extensive range of gluten-free options. No trip to York is complete without a visit to Goji. Huge selection of cakes, it’s difficult to make a decision when you know everything will be amazing! And in addition, I’m not used to having to make a choice when (in most places I visit) there is often little to no selection of vegan cakes They also do the BEST coffee and the interior is lovely, with a gorgeous little outdoor seating area

Really nice food, super clean and the vegan cake is probably the best I've had in a while - not dry and not greasy either. The garlic dip was super tasty too. It was quite busy, which isn't too bad, but the close-knit tables mean you might overhear a loud talker, but that's not on the café. A little spenny, but where isn't these days, and I'd much rather give my money to small business like this where you can tell they care about what they provide The staff were really helpful and accomodating too, especially the younger waitress. I'd definitely go back.

Charming Afternoon tea delight This café offers a beautifully presented and delicious afternoon tea experience. The sweet treats were fresh and flavorful especially the strawberry sponge and blackcurrant tart. The scone was perfectly baked and served with jam and vegan cream. The savory tofu sandwiches were fresh and tasty, providing a lovely balance. Warm, friendly service and a cozy atmosphere made the visit even more enjoyable. Highly recommended!

A lovely cafe, with a great ambience and cute outside area, lovely staff who seen to care. Gorgeous food, with a varied menu, and several plant based options, and beautiful cakes.

I'm not vegan and wouldn't normally choose a Vegetarian cafe. I'm really fussy about vegetables and have a nut allergy. However my partner is Celiac, so finding a lunch venue involves a wider search of options. Goji have a selection of Gluten Free options (not just a salad or baked potato) and clearly labelled menu. (Dairy free, Contains nuts, None Gluten containing ingredients) My partner had the all day breakfast which she polished off in no time. I tried a little and was surprised at the vegan sausage, it was moist and succulent, not dense and dry. The Gluten free bread was fluffy and soaked up the juices perfectly. (GF bread is the ultimate test of an establishment) I had a Mediterranean style quiche, which was bursting with flavour and had a delightfully crunchy crust but softer base. The herbed new potatoes were amazing. I would gladly eat a portion of them on their own. Because I'm fussy about broccoli, they were nice enough to exchange it for some sweet potato wedges, which were nice and firm with good seasoning. The GF beer option was really nice and worth tracking down. There wasn't any room for dessert, so we took a slice of the GF cheesecake home. I didn't get to try this as my partner inhaled it before complaining she should have bought 2 slices. In a city with plenty of dining options, Goji is near the top for a return visit. Im really keen on trying one of their picnic boxes. Oh, and the staff were delightful and communicated well regarding our food requirements.

Vegan reviewer: We love going to Goji as it’s got a proper friendly independent vibe. Incredible portion sides, very good prices and very friendly staff. It’s a very casual (and friendly!) style of service, so if that’s not your thing you may want to try somewhere a bit more formal. Their vegan brunch is lovely (great sausages and amazing potatoes!). They have a really nice hot dog that comes with a small salad that has a wonderful dressing on. Their hummus is lovely but does require a bit of self-seasoning. The flat bread is delicious! Goji has a large variety of salads and desserts too. It is entirely vegetarian with a lot of vegan options, including different burgers and a cashew tart for example. I would love to see a greater variety of hot food there in the future. The perfect place for a relaxed brunch with some really good oat coffee Recently returned for the Xmas Quinoa burger which was delicious :)

We received the warmest of welcomes on a miserable rainy day. We were shown to a table next to the heater to dry out. The staff were all absolutely incredible so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The food was also incredible as well as the gorgeous chocolate & cherry cake. I can't recommend this place enough it's cosy and a real hidden gem in York. Will definitely return the next time I find myself in the area.
Jenni F — Google review
So the food was so good I forgot to take any pictures! There are a wide range of vegetarian and vegan options, I went for the tofu hotdog ( with halloumi cheese) with ketchup mustard etc and boy was it nice! A large serving and well priced. There is a little outside garden at the back with about 3 tables. This isn't obvious but worth asking about if the weather is nice. The staff were friendly and attentive, our food was served in a reasonable time. At a time when most restaurants have gone back to offering the token veg/vegan option (usually with mushrooms (yuk) it felt great to actually have so a wide choice. Would totally recommend

We ordered the chicken burrito and the jackfruit one. They were absolutely magnificent, unbelievable! Excellent portion and service. The lad who served us, called goose was very friendly, and the lady with him too. Will definitely come again.

Visited shambles kitchen as they are very popular on socials and wanting to try the famous can’t even remember what it is called😂 I think Guy something😂😂well I won’t say it was bad but It just ordinary,( we all have different preferences) not out of the world and definitely didn’t hit my taste bud in the slightest as I have had sandwiches way more tastier and less expensive and that’s why I am giving it a 3! Will definitely try other things from shambles kitchen

Tried the Truffle Puff sandwich — pulled pork, truffle mayo, lettuce, and parmesan.🥪🧀 I really liked the smoky flavour of the pulled pork, and the bread was nice and soft.

The sandwich taste is ok. However, the kids all love it.

Honestly, the sandwich’s and food throughout the year and at Christmas are next level, packed with flavour, perfectly balanced, and made with ingredients that actually taste fresh and real. The meat was tender, the sauces were unreal, and the bread? Fluffy with just the right crunch. To die for. Shambles Kitchen never misses. If you haven’t tried it yet…. you’re seriously missing out.

Impeccable service and very nice food. Service was just the right side of attentive. The menu is quite small but varied. Stone bass and daal was eye opening. Venison with whisky sauce was delicious but the highlight was halibut with green peppercorn sauce. 10/10

Absolutely EXCEPTIONAL food, service, ambience… everything! Do not hesitate to come here. Fish dishes were so flavourful, and thoughtful. Bar snacks also incredible. Make time to come here, you won’t regret it.

Really lovely experience here, having done a bit of research. Menu presented on a board by our very knowledgeable and lovely server, Ellie. Stunning presentation. Incredible flavours. Would recommend both the venison and fish options having had both. And the incredibly complex homemade brown sauce if it is an option. Dessert was really impressive in flavour, a take on eton mess, and I've never had strawberries like it. Fabulous service, thank you!
Kate B — Google review
Sadly there have been two poor reviews recently - a worryingly trend. Our experience was no different other than the service was seemingly better during the meal. We knew it was a limited menu but this means each dish needs to be on form. Venison was the only meat available both as a starter and main. Not great so I chose it as a main. The meat was spongy. I'm not going to speculate why as it can be for a number of reasons. Edible but nothing I'd like to repeat. The fish dishes were poor. Neither the fish nor seafood gave any indication that they'd recently seen the sea. The only bright spots were the puddings and the bread. Wine list short but passable. At over £100 a head we won't be back.

We loved the meal, the staff and the time we spent here. It was my wife's 65th birthday and we needed a slam great meal with elegance, balance, ingenuity and finish to soak up a few hours together with some liquid refreshments. I can recite the menu, but I suspect that it changes regularly. The flavors, balance, infused flavors and bite taste were fabulous. Genuinely amazing. I want to personally thank the chef and staff for what was a delicious special meal for a special occasion.

A truly wonderful experience for our first night in York. Set in a beautiful part of town, great decor inside and smiley, super friendly staff. The chef was really accommodating with our requests and we really felt like any changes were no bother. We went for scallops for starter and halibut for the main- both were 10/10.

The food is superb. However, to be picky we found the quantity of food per person to be lacking compared to other similarly priced high end restaurants in York. Overall a good evening, but just that niggle of a lack of substance. PS: We are not big eaters.

Live Cheese in York is a dream for cheese lovers! We popped in after dinner since we skipped dessert and fancied a cheese board instead. We picked three cheeses and let our server choose the rest every single one was amazing! The quality was top notch, and the whole experience was super relaxed and enjoyable. So glad we stopped by definitely recommend!

Amazing cheese, fabulous service! I agreed to provide a ‘cheese cake’ for my Niece’s wedding celebrations. She is located in North Yorkshire, but a series of celebration events were scheduled to take place in Cornwall. I found Love Cheese via online search and was impressed by their offering and testimonials. The brief was to prioritise Yorkshire/Cornish/English cheeses but the couple had no set ideas beyond this, as their previous experience was primarily supermarket cheese. An exceptional cheese tasting run by Condi not only identified the 7 cheeses for the ‘cake’, but also inspired what I believe will be a lifelong love of artisan cheeses for them both. Cheeses, crackers and chutney were ordered and packaged ready for collection in advance of the long trip to the SW. The wedding celebration events were in a relaxed house party format over a couple of days, the cheeses were presented as a stack and separate displays and formed a central part of a relaxed food offering and complemented the floral and rustic style perfectly. Jordan, Condi and the rest of the Love Cheese team are definitely cheese experts and provided an exceptional level of service. They made everything so easy for me to arrange at distance with coordination via email. I cannot recommend them highly enough and hope to visit the Speak Cheesy the next time I am in York.

We stumbled across this lovely wine bar on our first night in York and popped in for a glass of wine! The service was amazing, some lovely waitresses working, very friendly and attentive. A pleasant evening spot right by York Minster. Diverse choice of food and unusual wines that seem to be specially chosen. The deli board has a great array of item though it is fixed. The price point overall felt a little high overall relative to other offerings around the city.

Presentation of food is immaculate, very aesthetically pleasing dishes and served in modern crockery. We ordered steak, potatoes, carrots, houmous, cabbage which were all very well seasoned and garnished. Waiters/waitresses were lovely and speedy. Whole restaurant has a quiet luxury underground aesthetic and quite posh. Would highly recommend for business meal, family meal out or drinks.

Fantastic, romantic food and wine experience right in the heart of York. Staff are knowledgeable and cater to all needs. Love the champagne ice bucket basins in the bathroom, and the decor throughout is stunning. A must visit!
Jessica B — Google review
Very pleasant wine bar. I was surprised and very gratified to find it empty on early afternoon on a sunny Sunday, I can only assume almost all the passersby were tourists specifically looking for a tourist trap "Yorkshire roast place". Their loss. The Wine selection is good, particularly the changing selection of wines, and the food menu is reasonably priced and everything was pleasant. The hanger steak especially was delicious! Portions on the small side, but if you think of this as a wine bar rather than a restaurant then you'll not be disappointed.

My husband and I spent a few days in lovely York, England. We stopped in for a wine and maybe a meal. The sever was helpful and explained the menu which is small plates. We ordered a nice bottle of wine from the San Marzano region of Italy. Perfect for two . The small plates were good, especially the beef taretar and the hazelnut pesto with ricotta. Small but cozy and with great smelling hand soap in the bathroom. Great place for small bites and wine.

Amazing venue for special celebrations. Staff were all so friendly and kind. The food was fantastic and they cater for gluten free, plus the set menu is great value for money. We were celebrating an anniversary and received a complimentary glass of fizz and desert which is the nicest touch! Will be back and recommend to others

The entrance, tunnel with fairy lights, was what compelled me to eat here with my family. We got seated quickly and the service was fast. We ordered off the set menu. The starters came eight minutes after ordering and our main courses came eight minutes after our starter. The mushroom arancini starter was delicious but the main courses was when it became questionable. The only good dish was the pan roasted beef. The pesto lacked any taste of basil and was far too creamy and the sea bass was unremarkable. The sides did not pair well. This meal was not worth the price.

We went to this restaurant for our 5 year anniversary and it was lovely! Our server sammy couldn’t have done enough for us! When they were told it was our anniversary they gave us free prosecco and a free cake with “happy anniversary” written on. Was a lovely sentiment and couldn’t recommend this place more! Starters we had the soup of the day which was potato and thyme, mains we had the sirloin steak and the pan roasted chicken, puddings we had the cheesecake of the day and passion fruit panna cota.

Came here a few months ago to celebrate my birthday and had a lovely experience. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing. We enjoyed the food — portions were decent and satisfying. The drinks were a bit mediocre, which is why I’ve taken a star off, but everything was reasonably priced. It also wasn’t busy at all, so even without a booking, you should be able to walk in with no problem. A solid spot overall.

Me and my wife stumbled across this restaurant in York and we are so pleased that we did. Staff were lovely, polite and made us feel welcome, even though it was a saturday evening and we had not booked a table. The food was amazing. Looked and tasted great. The gluten free menu had so many options available which is always a nice surprise. I was spoilt for choice. Very reasonable price, we actually expected it to be more as it is such a beautiful restaurant with a great atmosphere. Loved it! Will be visiting again when we are on York! Thank you

Came for lunch on a rainy Friday after a recommendation from a friend. The service was excellent - it's so nice to be waited on properly. I'd been craving soup so my choice of starter was easy, it was a delicious lentil soup served with a huge hunk of bread with lashings of a gorgeous herb butter which I tried to leave as I didnt want to fill up on bread before my main which was the biggest ceasar salad I have ever had! The bacon was perfectly cooked and the chicken was so moist and tender. Unfortunately it beat me but they very kindly packaged up the leftover half of my salad to take away. My husband had the pate and the risotto both of which he pronounced as " the best he's ever eaten" We were seated in a rear dining room with another couple so the atmosphere was rather library like but that was only a small non issue.
Deborah H — Google review
Visited Ate O’Clock while in York. The atmosphere was casual, and service was a little slow — at times, staff seemed a bit confused. I ordered the fish and chips (since we were in the UK), and it was just average at best. My wife had the Sunday roast and the tempura prawns, both of which were unimpressive — the prawns especially, with a heavy batter. Every once in a while, you get steered wrong, and sadly, this was that one time during our 25-day adventure. Even more disappointing, it ended up being our highest bill of the trip.

Didn’t think the staff were very friendly. I’ve been to many fancy restaurants around the world with staff who are very passionate in food and their craft but this was disappointing. Also very expensive about £200 per person. The girl with the glasses was really not friendly, I asked many questions about the wine and her replies were all one liners. Maybe it’s best the restaurant is officially closing in a few months. Doubt they are making money.Restaurant was rather empty. Being WSET 3 educated and soon diploma - I am very passionate about food and wine but this place was bad service and really nonchalant attitude…. Red flag! And way overpriced

Booked a meal for my birthday after being intrigued after Josh's appearance on GBM. The food was amazing, we ate and enjoyed things I'd never dream of ordering myself, the wine pairing was also on point. The whole experience was enjoyable and memorable in a friendly and calm environment.

Very nice food and excellent staff. The price for tasking menu is very good to compare with other restaurants. I paid more in other restaurants and the food was much worse. The tasting menu has eight courses but you get some additional snacks so it’s probably 10-11 courses in total, plus you can get a cheese board, although I was expecting some nice restaurant made crackers not a bread to be served with the cheese board. The wine selection could be slightly bigger. I missed some Malbec in the menu but still they have quite good selection of wines starting from around £19 per bottle and they have a few quite expensive choices as well, so you should find something for yourself. They have quite nice cocktails as well e.g. banana old fashion.

This restaurants has a unique laid back atmosphere, great place to chat and plenty of seats. One of the best Indian restaurants I’ve been too, great food and owner welcoming. The Lamb Thali was very yummy, you can choose spice level on a scale of 10, I went for 8 and for a spice lover that was my limit. Luckily the Thali came with yogurt so I could mix it up. I liked the variety of dishes in the set, lamb curry, dal, potato curry, potato salads, perfectly seasoned, the red sauce was the thing that chocked me up with the spice and I mixed it with yogurt to dip the popadom. You could order nan bread separately to dip in the sauce, there’s definitely enough sauce for nan. Mango lassi was too sweet for me, owner asked if I wanted ice in it and I chose not - maybe it would’ve been better with ice. I had a great experience there, they really tailored the food to my preference.

Sad to see the deli gone. Now it is just a cafe and unlike its neighbours with queuing customers outside, no longer a popular one either. Fantastic cafe in York. I don’t do many reviews as I’m quite difficult to please and often disappointed but this place would get ten out of ten from me. I had their butternut squash soup and a toasted sandwich. The soup was deliciously savoury and the sandwich was made from decent bread and well filled. There were 8 of us and the place is very small but they managed to accommodate us and all of my friends enjoyed the food too. Do try it, to my mind it’s a cut above.
Lee G — Google review
Lovely little place with top quality food. We first came here a few years ago on a trip to York but haven't been able to get a table when we've visited since. This time we had the Yorkshire platter (very nice selection of cheese, ham, pork pie etc), rustic veg soup and scotch egg. All really nice and proper stuff. It's a little small so not great for big groups but that suited the two of us just fine. We had a large wine and a craft beer and the total bill was £44, which we thought was good value, especially as we had plenty to take home.
Mat C — Google review
Could’ve been better. Should have realised when it was empty when we walked in. 2 young lads serving who let’s be honest we’re less than enthusiastic to serve. £2.95 for 1 crumpet is a bit steep to say the least and it does actually say crumpets on the menu. Yes we could’ve said something but it just felt like we were not welcome.
Hilary O — Google review
Absolutely delicious warm goats cheese salad and the house tea was lovely - so much so that we bought a bag to enjoy at home. There is only room for about ten people but it's definitely worth a visit.
Rachel G — Google review
We popped in for our lunch, great homemade food and really friendy staff. Shop & deli next door also sells more of the same food you can choose from the menu. Will return before we go home for sure 😋

My absolute go to shop for treats. Fantastic products, quality, staff are so warm and welcoming. Here's my newly acquired coffee. My kitchen smells lovely. But you have everything from pies, cheese, pasta, jars, it's heaven

Flea & Street Markets
Shambles Market is a well-established outdoor market located in the heart of York, open every day of the week. It offers a wide range of products including fresh produce, crafts, and clothing. The market has been recognized with the Best Outdoor Market award at the Great British Market Awards. Visitors can indulge in a culinary adventure at the dedicated food court where various food stands serve up delicious street food daily.
A tiny but amazing spot in amazing town) with lots of magic shops, treats and lovely old buildings. Can be crowded with visitors but even them are fun to watch ) The food court is a must visit - everything is delicious!
Ksh L — Google review
Is it touristy? Yes, of course it is. Is it crowded? Yes, of course it is. Is it worth the visit? 100% absolutely! A few tips/tricks. (1) go early or go late. The 11am - 3pm window can be crushing. (2) There are better food options in the Shambles Market than there are on the Main Street in The Shambles. (3) Book a tour with The Real Ghost Hunt which meets at the Shambles at 730pm. You walk through many sites in the area, are entertained, and it is not crowded.
David H — Google review
Busy full of tourists taking photos and can't move in most shops. It is very picturesque so I get it but maybe I just went on and extra busy day? Still lots of great sites to see around the Shambles including York Minister.
Kimberley G — Google review
Theshambles’s market features lots of different little stalls run by individual vendors, from witchy themed gifts and merchandise to clothing, bags, alcohol, woodcraft and bookmaking, art, food, cosmetics etc and is located at the back of the famous York Street, surrounded by restaurants and other shops. I found the range of market stores to be very interesting, with lots of different things being sold, all the vendors were very friendly and knowledgeable, The market Square is very clean and tidy, with a few convenient seats nearby, plenty of bins, and areas to stop by.
Grace P — Google review
The Shambles is a must for anyone visiting York. It can get busy at times but just be patient. Lots of old buildings with lots of character. A visit to the York Ghost Merchants is a must. At busy times you will have to que in the street. The staff will keep you amused. Lots to do and see.
Belinda M — Google review
Fantastic market with lots of different stalls at really good prices. Definitely the place to go for some fantastic street food - would absolutely recommend Nana Noodle Bar for some Thai food and the crepe stall too.
John K — Google review
We spent a week in York and visited The Shambles a number of times as it was my favourite part of the City. There was a lovely hustle and bustle around the market and the cobblestone streets. We loved seeing the old buildings and architecture. I was advised not to visit on a Saturday with children or a pram as it gets very busy and the streets are narrow. I found the market stalls had very limited produce which was overpriced and the food vendors were also overpriced.
Melanie B — Google review
The Shambles is a really lovely shopping experience. The houses and buildings are very medieval as most are built in 14th century. There are lots of quirky shops. I visited the Christmas shop, a Harry Potter shop called - “the shop that must not be named”. There are plenty of gift shops, sweet shops and food or pubs. It gets very busy and crowded so best to turn up about 10am.

The Orchid Vegan Restaurant is a cozy spot with warm decor, serving up Asian-inspired vegan dishes. With a menu entirely free of animal products, it stands out as a haven for ethical vegans and those seeking diverse plant-based options. Customers have raved about the 'amazing' food and attentive staff, making it a top choice for flavorful and non-greasy dishes. The restaurant's commitment to animal welfare adds an extra layer of appeal for conscious diners.
Incredible food, amazing staff and great atmosphere! I'm a Londoner and pretty spoilt with great vegan food but this was by far the best I've ever had! Also a gluten free menu 🙏 My partner who's a meat eater also loved it! Also fantastic wine! 10/10
Sinead L — Google review
This restaurant is like a restaurant should be. Excellent service, lovely atmosphere, and great food. We will definitely return. Unfortunately, I forgot to photograph anything but the soup. The mushroom soup was excellent. I also ate stir fried mushrooms and veggies with tofu, and it was great. Those items are not listed below as items to recommend. My spouse enjoyed the sweet and sour prawns. We were warned that it is quite sweet, and I thought to sweet for my taste, but my spouse loved it. Updated: we ate here a second time, and enjoyed it, trying different dishes, including the lamb skewers, the Mongolian beef.
Debby K — Google review
What a beautiful restaurant! The food was incredible, full of flavour and very fresh and presented expertly! We enjoyed a selection of starters including edamame and seaweed with a choice of incredible mains to choose from! The restaurant itself was very clean and very elegant and food was well priced! The staff were lovely and very welcoming, I took my mum here whilst on holiday in York. By far this was the best restaurant i visited during my stay and has now become my favourite restaurant and I will be travelling from my home town to enjoy the experience and food again! Credit to you all! Well worth a visit if you've never been!

This was an amazing experience. The best vegan food I’ve ever had, hands down. Great food, excellent service and a good location. So blown away by the food. Absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend.

I really get excited by vegan take on Asian cuisine and hence wanted to head to this place as soon as I heard of it in York. We were not disappointed, as the food was pretty good. We liked the soup and tofu curry, and the fried rice was also delicious. Highly recommend this place to anyone visiting York!
Sruthi M — Google review
I loved it at the Orchid! I had the crispy vegan beef in a fruity sauce and it was excellent! So crispy and flavourful. And the waiter was very kind and attentive. Definitely a must-go for vegans and non-vegans. Why killing animals if you can have so good plantbased food 🫶🏽

One of my favorite places to eat Chinese food! The staff are lovely and welcoming and the food is incredibly flavourful. I've had a few dishes from their menu and I love the duck pancakes, croquettes and the vegan chocolate cake is amazing! I'd come here just for the desserts! Flavours are on the sweeter side, but there's a variety to enjoy.

Lovely food and staff (very attentive). We have a friend with loads of allergies and they were great with her and made sure she was happy and comfortable with all the food. Try the crispy chilly beef in OK Sauce, is the best!

Thai restaurant
Zaap Thai Street Food in York is a vibrant and lively restaurant that offers an authentic taste of Bangkok's street food scene. The restaurant's colorful and convivial atmosphere, complete with neon lighting and funky tuk tuks, creates the feeling of being in a bustling Thai market. With over 80 authentic Thai street food dishes on the menu, visitors can experience the true flavors of Thailand.
Genuinely incredible food and amazing staff who are very helpful and kind! We got the tom yum with chicken, roasted duck with rice, bao buns, Thai milk tea and honeydew melon tea. The bao buns (satay and mango) were incredible, it was my first time trying! The tom yum was really balanced, perfectly spicy and sour, the roasted duck was delicious and came with a lovely garlic sauce! Personally, this was the best Thai milk tea I have had from any Thai place. We also got mango sticky rice which had perfectly ripe mango and sweet rice! Will definitely come back again it’s the best Thai food in York!!
Hafsa — Google review
Wonderful staff who gave us lots of information and recommendation about the food. Indeed, there are plenty items on the menu. Great food and you can choose the spicy level according to your own preference. What’s more, kids menu is provided. My son enjoyed the Satay chicken with fried rice. The portion was perfect for a 9-year-old boy.
Ivy H — Google review
Fab food made fresh to order - hot tasting food, and simple fresh ingredients. Service was fun and friendly - sometimes a little slow. The food is authentic and not English style Thai - the menu is a little perplexing at first - but lots of choice and we had a fab meal.
Greg D — Google review
The dishes are absolutely delicious and clean. The restaurant itself is super clean and give the vibe of Thai street food. Staffs are super friendly and helpful. I love this Zaap in York which is second none
Win H — Google review
Pretty disappointing - and it's pretty rare that I say that! The food was mostly good when it eventually arrived: we had been in the restaurant for 45 minutes before 3 of the meals arrived; another 10 for one of them; and the last was roughly another 10 minutes more. Two of us had finished by the time the last meal arrived. A couple of waiters apologised afterwards, but still left a 7.5% service charge on the bill. I paid it as I figured the delay wasn't their fault. Having said that, comments on the dishes included: too dry; and not much flavour. Having said that, my pork belly pad thai was enjoyable. When asked for ratings, usually positive family members rated it as 3-3.5. We probably won't be back.
N S — Google review
Highly recommend! the food was all cooked perfectly and the restaurant as a whole has a great vibe especially with the staff being so helpful and kind! Plus we recieved a free bubble tea❤️ will definitely be returning (Got 2 mains, 2 starters and 3 drinks for around £45)

This is the second Zaap we've been to, the last one was in Nottingham. We loved the decor, zips you into a different world, where you feel like you are actually on the streets of Thailand. The restaurant in Nottingham is much bigger and they've nailed the decor. The food is great and varied as usual, and arrives quite quickly. Would love to see one built in London near where I live as I'd be more than happy to visit over and over again 😊

Today was my first time trying ZAAP as my birthday meal with my family . Have to say was an amazing time lovely service , staff very friendly and paid attention to our table well . The food came in very fast and tastier fresh and hot , the portion says was very big surprisingly they all hit the spot in terms o flavour. Overall it was a very first time experience definitely will be coming here again for future meals and would highly recommend it to my friends and family .

Shi Shang Chinese Restaurant is a laid-back eatery located a bit outside the center of York, offering an authentic Chinese dining experience. It's highly recommended for its delicious dishes such as chow mein, spring rolls, and sweet and sour chicken. The restaurant has earned its place among the best places to eat in York due to its consistently satisfying food.
Solid 10/10! Recently moved to the area so we’re having fun testing out local takeaways. My husband who is picky ate every last bit of his salt and paper chicken and chips. Not one complaint from us. Delivery was super quick too! Definitely be back!

Very delicious food and very friendly staff. We are regular. We always enjoy the hot jasmine tea with meal, and recommend everyone do so rather than any other drinks or alcohol drinks.

Excellent service and food, very lovely staff I couldn't be more satisfied. I was here with a Chinese friend, the atmosphere was cosy and inviting, and it was reassuring to see the cutlery taken straight from the disinfection cabinet. The Traditional Chinese Menu was delightful, bursting with flavour, and truly made my day! I genuinely look forward to returning for another visit!
Coco S — Google review
Fantastic authentic meal at a very reasonable price. Have one of the traditional dishes - plenty to share between two people and full of good quality ingredients and bucket loads of flavour. Service was excellent, very attentive and super friendly but efficient and not intrusive. Best meal we've had all week in York and will definitely be first on our list for our next visit. Five stars all the way 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Thank you 🙏
Catherine C — Google review
Food was absolutely delicious. Loved everything we got. Mixed starter platter was cooked to perfection and was so tasty. The chicken wings were so tasty as were the sauce the ribs came with. We got the fruity pork which I 100% recommend. The salted egg tofu was good too. The Sichuan chicken had nice flavour but was a dry dish (not overcooked or anything) and needs to be paired with a sauce or saucy dish in my opinion. Service was very attentive. My only suggestion is the fragrance they use in the dining area. We would occasionally get a whiff of what smelt like toilets/air freshener. I don’t think it was the toilets because they didn’t smell and we were sat away from them, perhaps there’s a ventilation duct or something near us. That being said, I’d still say this is the best Chinese I’ve had and would come back here again for sure.
Carey G — Google review
We booked at late notice and they were more than happy to accommodate us. The staff were so friendly and couldn't do enough for us, they were great with my son who has issues with food but he had the best night of his life here at his first Chinese restaurant trying out chopsticks! The food was fantastic and possibly one of the best I've had. Thanks for a lovely evening and whenever we are next back in York we'll be coming here!

After seeing the reviews on here we thought we would try it we wasn't disappointed the food and staff were fantastic portion we're very generous next time I think me and my partner will share.

We always go there when the family wants Chinese. They have lovely employees and serve well cooked and spicy meals which are very generous in portions. My son’s birthday dinner was more than excellent when they gave him a fudge ice cream with a candle and my son loved it. We always will recommend Shi Shang for their amazing food services and great value for money.

Located near York Minster, The Block is a cozy eatery known for its handmade pizzas and variety of meat and veggie toppings. The place has a NY dive bar vibe with an enormous photo of The Clash on one wall and offers Roman-style rectangular pizza slices with unique combinations like roasted squash, chilli, thyme, goats cheese and spinach. Customers praise the vegetarian options available as well as the great selection of hot sauces.
We stumbled upon Block Pizza while walking through York city center, and it turned out to be a great find! The pizza was absolutely amazing, with fresh ingredients and a perfect crust. The service was excellent too, friendly and efficient. If you're in York and craving a great pizza, totally recommend this place! 🍕🔥

Top pizza, top customer service. No menu, they personally run you through the options which is a great touch. Hot honey pizza was 👨‍🍳🤌🏻. My girlfriend is vegan and had a tomato garlic pizza which, although no cheese, was really good and fresh. 10/10, will be going again!

One of the best margarita pizza slices I've ever had! Music was a bit loud when we arrived but might have been just that track as it was soon turned down. Overall a fantastic little place for a meal or especially if you're just after a light bite as we were.
Veefource — Google review
Been here a few times for pizza time, great tasting reasonable sized slices. Costs about a fiver, large diverse selection of pizza to choose from. Nice vibe inside, decent staff working here. Perfect casual eating.
James E — Google review
The Block is a great spot for pizza, we popped in for a quick bite and a pint with not much time to spare. You can select which pizzas you want varying from £4-5 and they do you a large rectangular slice cut into 2 (we shared). As a recommendation, it's the perfect spot for a quick bite before doing something else for the evening. Staff were friendly, pizza was nice and they had good music on and a good selection of drinks, including brooklyn lager on draught!
Warrick B — Google review
The Block is great. Amazing Pizza, great atmosphere, fantastic decor and brilliant service. I've walked passed here loads but never been in until today, we'll definitely be back. I love the concept of being able to order different flavoured pizzas rather that just one. They also have a brilliant selection of hot sauces which is rare to find; usually there's a choice or 1 or 2 but there were 10 here (I even got a cheeky sample to take home with me).
James C — Google review
Its such a good place. In Italy we loved these kind of places where you can taste few bits of different pizzas. I would love to have same concept place in our region. Me and my husband ordered each two slices and I was full for all day. Also the staff is so friendly. This place is very popular it was packed with people once we visited.
