Nestled in the charming Varikonniemi area of Hämeenlinna, Vanai Bistro & Bastu is a delightful culinary destination that has been serving the community since the 1920s. This bistro beautifully combines history with modern flair, transforming an old garage into a vibrant meeting spot featuring a bar, terrace, and sauna. The menu showcases seasonal dishes crafted from fresh local ingredients, offering both classic Finnish flavors and international influences.
We were served by Abed who is fantastic and incredibly friendly. He made us some cocktails (whiskey sour and bloody mary, the bloody mary especially was delicious), overall great service! The food was good, presentation was pretty, ingredient quality was high, we had salmon ceviche (a Nordic version of the dish), steak and beetroot risotto. The ambiance was great and the restaurant was very well decorated, we didn’t try the sauna but hopefully will try it next time!

Nice & cozy atmosphere and food was pretty decent. But nothing helps when the service is so subpar. Hard to even sum it up.
They were lacking listed items (which is ok, but waiting for a substitute can't take ages), some of our initial orders were missing, waiting for drinks while getting appetizers etc. But the "crown jewel" was our waiter explaining us how the sirloin stake could not be ordered medium rare as it's not good for health 😁

Last werkend we celebrated our wedding at viinti. We we‘re so flashed! The menue was perfect. All the tastes and the textures were so surprising but harmonic. The atmosphere at the restaurant was also very lovely! They really looked after our diets and wishes!
And the service was perfect and very kind! Also the prices were so fair for what we got!
We really enjoyed it and we couldn‘t imagine a better place for our celebration! And next time, when we get to hämeenminna, we will visit again! ❤️

I tried Vintti seven course menu and it was very pleasant experience. Restaurant has a nice industrial decor and helpful staff. Theme of the food seemed to revolve around local ingredients (mostly) which I found nice. What could be improved was wine pairing.
It is a hidden place, but once you find it, you'll get an opportunity to enjoy a lovely atmosphere, fine food and a plesant service. Vegan dishes were perfect 😃 Be sure to check in out.

I really love the new venue. All the details in the interior are well thought. Big plus for the plates. Service was excellent, professional but still relaxed and fun. As a vegan I was really happy with my starter and my main course. Super tasty and full of flavours. So it is a vegan friendly restaurant. Good wine also, so what else can I ask. Definitely a restaurant I will recommend and I will visit again.

A bit disappointed by the food that was less punchy and refined than in summer.

Ambiance was nice although very very dark decor. I prefer lighter specially as already very dark outside with winter coming.
This was a nice lunch experience. Nothing too fancy but still a bit elevated lunch. On the main I had salmon, potatoes and smoked carrots. Carrots worked really well with salmon.

I found this place from a YouTube review and I just had to try it! So we organized a cycling trip to this place. The food was really nice and finally I could find somewhere that you can have proper bbq! 🍗 🍖 We had briskets, pork belly and ribs and some sides. The ribs could be better but the rest were gorgeous. One comment that I have is the portion sizes. It has to be a bit bigger for a bbq place.
I loved the atmosphere, especially the terrace, unfortunately for us it was raining so we sat inside. A fantastic place. I hope they open up a joint in the Helsinki as well.

Me and my brother were welcomed by a very nice host. He had great suggestions and some (very unFinnish) small talk. Very nice location, very nice food and a nice staff. Had an excellent meal and bought some merchandise!
Best BBQ place I've been in Finland. Generous portions and great flavour. The service with post-its is a bit strange and the location itself gives school cafeteria vibes. But in the end, we went there for the food and that did not disappoint! Would go again for sure!
Perfect tastes but really expensive and hidden beef "fee's", drinks and ice cream added to final price which was around 50€......... Eating in restaurant should be cheaper.

This BBQ restaurant, nestled in an old water-powered mill, is an absolute gem for a summer visit. The scenic location is truly captivating and they've done a fantastic job of leveraging the historic setting to create a wonderful atmosphere for the entire family. It's great to see authentic BBQ establishments emerging in Finland, and the concept here is certainly promising.
We visited on a busy day, which unfortunately highlighted a few areas for improvement. While not a huge deal for me personally, I did notice one of the cooks with a rag in their nose due to a nosebleed, and food being handled with bare hands by one hand while gloves were worn on the other. Definitely something to be mindful of in a food service environment.
The high volume also seemed to impact the food quality. The brisket, unfortunately, was on the dry side, and I found the meats and sauces overall to be too salty. However, it wasn't all negatives on the food front! My personal favorites were the chicken and the delicious fried potatoes, served skin-on. A real highlight.
This place has immense potential, especially given its unique and beautiful setting. With some tweaks to food consistency and kitchen hygiene practices, it could truly be a standout destination for BBQ lovers in Finland.

Nice location. Friendly service. The bacon burgers were delicious. They were out of gluten free buns when we arrived so I took the ribs which unfortunately were overdone and quite dry, though still tasty (I was hungry!). Expensive like all food in Finland.
From outside the place looks a bit old and decayed, but from inside it's newly furnished place with great vibes. The food was extremely tasty, I had the smash burger with a side of parmesan fries.
The sesame chicken burger was super crispy and I enjoyed the kimchi inside. However they were out of all the side dishes and just one burger for approx 13-14 euro didn’t make me full and felt it was over priced. The atmosphere was very calming and nice.
Food was mixed up for two orders. Ordered gluten-free but received normal bun. Got a new order on request. One burger was a completely different one than ordered. Staff was not helpful.
I had the lunch menu which consisted of pulled pork, a smoky cheese burger, fries, and an elaborate salad bar including coleslaw amongst other things. It’s a really solid deal for the price you pay, which is the typical price for a lunch buffet. My only criticism is that the fries were excessively salted and to a lesser degree also the burger and pork. That much salt means that the buffet was probably an assault on my health. It’s a shame because otherwise I would give the buffet 5 stars. The service was speedy and super hospitable and the place has a nice DJ setup which crucially is not playing at a high volume.
Best burgers in Finland. We took the double cheese-bbq burger and the halloumi-sweet potato burger and both were amazing. Also the potato bowl surprised us both with how delicious it was.

Delicious, high-quality food and tasty drinks. The portion sizes were perfect and the service was great. Also, one of the nicest restaurant bathrooms I've ever been in :)

The restaurant modernizes traditional dishes for a contemporary palate, especially during lunch hours. With an atmospheric basement setting, the food is served quickly and is highly enjoyable. The staff are professional and pleasant, providing top-notch service with a smile. Despite being popular, the restaurant manages to maintain great service even during busy times.
The food was great and the staff super nice! A rich salad buffet is included also when ordering Á la Carte. The interior of the restaurant is cozy and we really enjoyed our visit! Highly recommended.

Very good pizza if you like thin crust. Good amount of toppings maybe even slightly too much for the crust. I like my crust a little crispy so this was not my favourite in that sense. It is our first time to visit Hämeenlinna. The food was so delicious we took Kuha and pizza wow for the first time so thin and delicious. Recommended must visit to try if you are in Hämeenlinna.
Great service staff, food was really low quality. We never send food back but both of our main foods had to be sent back. Medium steak was well done++ and we asked them to re-do it and after that it was done right.
Another main food had all the vegetables ice cold and had to be sent to kitchen for re-heating, after that the food was missing half of its ingredients.
Servers were great throughout the time and we will definitely go back but this time the food just sucked A LOT.

Good restaurant overall. We ordered Himalayan special where is chicken, shrimp and mutton on a sizzling cast iron bowl. Additionally we ordered a lamb karahi. Lamb karahi was good but it could be a bit more spicy.

The best momo I have ever tried in Finland. Very juicy and savory taste and the sauce was the highlight.

Fresno Bar & Kitchen, located on the second floor without elevator access, has received top ratings in various aspects. Probably the best experience in Hämeenlinna.
We had samples as starters and they were fresh, hot and fried as they should be. Couldn't have done any better. I ate tuna beef and my friend had a burger. They were also just perfect which is rare to say about any restaurant.
Nice sparkling wine and good service so our experience was definitely five stars.
The service is solid, nothing to complain about there. Same goes for the feel, aesthetic, tables and cleanliness.
My issue was with the food. it is quite pricey and the portions aren't massive either. So you expect it to taste great at least.
What I had was the pepper steak. I expected to be able to taste the steak more than the pepper. That was not what I got. The potatoes on the side were simple and tasted great. The vegetables were good without the sauce, but they don't work well with a steak.
The pepper was overpowering and ruined a good cut of meat and an assembly of vegetables.

Proper burgers! Open burger for the ladies and bun topped burger for the gents. Kid portions were good and double apple pie hit the spot. Service was very friendly. Next time in Hämeenlinna would definitively go back.

nice 50’s themed rock n roll restaurant. burgers were good, service was great. place is very dog friendly, our lab got a blanket to lay on on the floor and a cup of water & happy greetings from staff :) we were there on saturday afternoon, and there werent too many other customers.
Came by to eat by an accident on a Sunday evening, and was not expecting the food to be so delicious! Best fries I've had so far at a restaurant and the burgers were great.
Plus, whatever the lady who served us is being paid is not enough! She was fantastic. I'd give 6 stars to service if I could. Will be coming by again!

This was some of the best Thai food I’ve had outside of Thailand. The ladies that run the place are very kind, and we’re patient with us as we don’t speak any Finnish. The food was fantastic, and the decor of the interior so cosy and welcoming. We had takeout but I’d have loved to eat in!

Portion is small compared to price. Prices in the English menu is not updated, so we thought we would pay 13.90 but it was 15.90 for tofu. The noodles look very messy for a dish prepared by a restaurant.
Not good Thai food. The noodles were overcooked for 2 meals, covered in a clear sauce. The spices were whole cloves, the basil was a variety that was hard leaves. The portions are very big, but I'd rather the food be more delicious than big. The spring rolls were the best part though.
Excellent Thai classics! I only wish that service and decorations would be on the same level. Will come again for the food!

Wow excellent Thai food! Friendly service, large portions, and rich taste. We ordered the lunch massaman curry and pad thai, and requested no meat or tofu just veggies-it was delicious! Vegetarians will be very happy here with the flexibility offered by the cook. We aren’t vegan but I believe they would serve to order and it would be worth a try. Very thick savory curry with roasted peanuts, just what we were hoping for, not too sweet or bland as some restaurants have changed to fit Finnish taste. You won’t be disappointed if you give Sawaddee a visit! Highly recommend!

The food is tasty and comes in great variety. The space is a bit limited and at times crowded. Service is kind and hospitable. The interior is decorated with plants and paper lamps which adds to the atmosphere. I would prefer a bit more shrimp and salmon rolls and traditional options but the staff have great imagination to offer alternatives. Great selection of desserts although some more gluten free options would add to the balance. I have visited here two times now and it is always a pleasure to find new additions. Thank you!

Pretty much everything that I tried was good. A few dishes were really nice, a few not so much, but in general I would definitely recommend this buffet if you aren't looking for the best of the best sushi. Unexpectedly, this was, I think, the best restaurant experience I've had in many years. The food was great. Service is nice. Atmosphere? Bora is an excellent choice for cosy, casual, Mediterranean food. Lunch is served on the table (usually two options to choose from) and there is also a salad bar, where I have also seen dolmades available. The Greek music playing in the background and the spacious seating area, plus the good food, make it one of my favourite restaurants in Hämeenlinna!

Had dinner at Ravintola Bora last night, and it was fantastic! We ordered the lamb chops with rice and a chili burger. Both dishes were amazing, but the lamb chops were on another level—super tasty and cooked just right.
The service was great too. Our waitress was super friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. The atmosphere was relaxed and spacious, perfect for a nice evening out.
Bonus points for the super clean bathrooms—always a good sign!
Overall, I’d totally recommend Ravintola Bora. I’m definitely coming back next time I’m in Hämeenlinna.

Think twice or thrice before you go to this 'Ravintola Siddharta' if you are from an Asian background, specially if you are going for buffet.
I visited this restaurant buffet twice, and both times I was left utterly disappointed. The first time, I thought maybe it was just a mistake or a one-time issue, but after my second visit, I realized this is a consistent pattern.
As an Asian customer, I felt completely neglected. It became painfully obvious that this restaurant does not care about its Asian patrons. The staff seems only interested in taking your money and offering the bare minimum in terms of service. The food was not filling at all, with many trays empty for long periods, and some dishes were simply missing altogether. It was frustrating and completely unacceptable.
The most disappointing part was the lack of attention to customers. When we asked for refills or needed assistance, we were met with indifference. This was not just a bad experience – it was clear to me that the treatment was different because of my ethnicity. It felt like they only served Asian customers minimally, as if we weren’t a priority.
For a buffet, I expected better service and food quality. Sadly, I will not be returning to this place, and I do not recommend it to any Asian living in Finland, especially if you value good service and respect as a customer.
If you are on the highway from Helsinki to Tampere, this is nice place to break for lunch/ dinner. Nice and clean place, center of the city. A little difficult to get Parking place. Food was tasty, portions were optimal sized, could be a little bigger. Customize your spice levels when ordering, or else it turns a bit spicy. Good number of options to choose from.
We went couple of times, to be honest the staff is wonderful and kind, the meal is so tasty and the menu is plenty of choices (including vegan options). We do really recommend this ravintola.

Love this Nepalese place in the city centre with ample sitting space. The lunch buffet has a huge variety including a dish of each - chicken, fish/prawn, beef/lamb dish and vegetable curry ( the options/ recipes keep changing daily on the weekdays). Also includes drinks like chilled mango lassi ♡, coffee and milk tea( chai). In addition to rice and noodles/chowmein in the buffet, they serve individual warm naan bread servings on the table. Totally worth the money (10/11 euro per head). Edit: in summers they have aircoditioning too inside. It's quite a comfortable restaurant with amazing variety

During our weekend in the Hämeenlinna area we went to Le Blason as per recommendation from our friends.
Being French I loved the food 👌🏼 with some slight welcome Finnish takes on the traditional French cuisine.
We had the tartare, salmon feuilleté, beef maître d'hôtel, duck salade and tarte Tatin.
Being a big fan of tarte Tatin I was really pleased with the one I ordered.
The service was top, nice, welcoming with a big smile is always appreciated.
The area is also lovely, you have the possibility to dine on the terrace close to the water!
If you are near, you surely should stop by!

The Grill buffet was great, there was a lot of variety, most foods were very tasty. I didn't like the steak that much, it was very dry and the fat in the middle was a bit unpleasant. Atmosphere at the restaurant was very pleasant, staff was nice. For three of us it costed around 100€, which I think is a bit on the pricy side. I would come here again

This is really nice and historical hotel and have lot of different possibilities to relaxing. There are old buildings and therefore it is good to ask if rooms have cooling system in warm weather. In spring all rooms are really okay. I recommend this place.

I'm just not sure why they have to include a poached egg also in the burger. I left it out and I think that was the right thing to do. Parmesan fries were ok, lacked a bit if seasoning maybe.

Chicken salad smothered in three different dressings. The chicken is of poor and salty quality. The customer service is by far the worst I’ve come across around Hämeenlinna in a long time. I really love this cafeteria restaurant with delicate lunch meal, and recently they update boba drinks. Each week they cook a special Vietnamilainen dish, and it is very delicious.
Opening time was updated ? I did be there at lunch time there to check closing time for dinner later, still there : Saturday 11:00 -20:00 . But at 18:00 i came back, restaurant was closed. Sadly for my two kids was hungry. No information even on the front door. Hope it will be better in future.

The pricing was functional. Not a pleasant experience. First, the pizza that we ordered was so spicy that I being an Asian and FOND OF SPICES could not bear it. We ordered the Hunter pizza. Yes it said it would have chilli in it but we did not know the whole thing would be made of more chilli and less dough. LITERALLY. Every bite felt like more chilli, less pizza dough, less toppings. Anyways, since we were already not too hungry, we decided we would get the remaining thing packed and eat it later, maybe with some chocolate or sweet. Upon asking for a packing box, the guy demanded 1 euro for a box. I was shocked because i had not witnessed that in any of the restaurants i have ever visited in Finland. Maybe this was their restaurant policy but still, its quite unfair. I would not recommend this place because of the horrible food.
