Where to eat: the 30 best restaurants in Carentan-les-Marais

We had a great experience here today. We opted for pizzas for a change and both were superb (a Chevre and a Carentanaise) as were the desserts (a Dame Blanche and a café gourmand). This is the best food I've had in a good while. The waiting staff were efficient, courteous and friendly. Thank you very much for a lovely experience at your restaurant.

We arrived just before 2pm but they fitted my party of 4 in and served us delicious pizzas washed down with some lovely Belgian beer. The owner was very chatty and gave my grandson a 101st Airborne badge. He was rightly very proud of his restaurant and that D-Day veterans have always eaten for free there.

I was honestly surprised good solid pizzas. The waitresses don't understand English well but smiling and nodding goes a long way :)

On way back home to England, so called in again. Just as good as last time. Can definitely recommend the fish St Pierre and the Cafe Gourmand. Hope to dine here again.

It was packed at lunch time with locals out for food and workers popping in. The food was brilliant and they could not have been more helpful when eight English lads on a battlefield tour descended without booking.

The Diablo is a ground beef and pepperoni pizza thats set on fire at your table. Its really delicious. Has a slight bite to it especially if you add more spicy oil. The drinks were delicious and perfectly made. Can't knock the place. Authentic food with an English enough explanation in the menu 🤗

Food was ok. Sea bass was decent. Charges were messed up. Charged for water. Gave us extra cheese we didnt want and charged for it. Asked for take away and he threw it away. The bus boy guy didn't seem to understand anything. Cheese selection has bugs in it so the guy picked it out with his fingers. Middle Eastern not very sanitary.

WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND though we didn't stay here. We were stranded at the train station and were needing to go to Ste-Mere-Eglise. All the taxi numbers we called said they were closed (Ferme!) and hung up on us. In desperation we walked to the Logis Auberge to ask if we could stay for the night. The manager said no when we only wanted 1 night, and then sent us on a wild goose chase to an associate's hotel with our huge luggage ("turn right, then right again, it's on your left") but it was nowhere to be found. As I thanked him (before we trekked away), he gave me an odd, condescending smile.... probably because he got rid of the people clogging his hotel lobby. Rude man, and completely unforgivable behavior!

We only went for food. It was a bit like Fawlty Towers but more expensive. Very chewy steak. Food generally not great. Service was very slow, or unhurried, depending on how you look at it. Staff friendly enough, but I really can't recommend this place. You'd be better off at Contoir des Morais by the dock.

Very nice people. Our room was plain but nice, the bathroom was new & lovely. A few essentials missing, a bit annoying when you are only staying one night. We had high hopes for dinner in their fabulous dining room, but sadly, my food was overcooked and served on a cold plate. Why would a chef do that.

First, the positive; the restaurant is in an attractive building with a courtyard, and the interior is equally pleasant. The food was ok but nothing special. However the service was a shambles. Having ordered five beers and a G&T we were told there was no beer and no gin. Having just cycled fifty miles that day you can imagine how welcome that was. The bottle of wine ordered from the menu was not available. We settled for cider until we were told there were no more chilled bottles. Each course took an age to come and when it did there was a further delay between the first and last of us to be served. The crowning glory was when our dessert was brought before the main course had been served. Overall a shame as it could have been so much better.

Very disappointed by the place : 1. The room was small, not enough equiped and the bathroom was not allowing any movement. A lot of work has to be done on this place. 2. The staff is awful. We waited for 10 min to get our keys for the room. The staff was even not satisfied and not aware of our booking. 3. No standard equipment in the hotel. We needed an iron but even one available at the reception is not an option. Very disappointing experience. I will definitely not come back.

Typical French reception from staff stood waiting to be seated 3 members of staff walking around with dishes cutlery not a word from anyone. By the time we were seated (about 5 minutes of standing there being ignored) there was a que of another 3 groups behind us. Service didn't really get much better had to ask several times for more drinks never asked if we wanted anything else when we were served food. Seemed each server had a job. 1 to give us cutlery 1 to bring us food 1 to take our order not very efficient and caused delays throughout the night. The food on the other hand was outstanding. Foie gras was amazing served with a nut ice cream which is still blowing my mind. Steak was great seafood nice and fresh good sized potion's. A little on the expensive side but well worth it for the quality of the food. Service has a lot to be desired but I wouldn't let it put me off returning.

This restaurant was a rare find coming out of Saint-Mere-Eglise. We found it on a Google search when we couldn't find an open restaurant that would fit us. The place was easy to get to just a couple of kilometers off the freeway. The staff was friendly and very accommodating to us, the lady that was helping us but good enough English to help us figure out what we wanted to eat and drink. I had the steak with french fries, it also came with salad carrots in a baked potato. My wife had the spaghetti bolognese. It was all delicious, we're coming back next year and this restaurant is on our to-do list

The perfect place to stop for lunch after our visit to the D day experience. There was a suitable menu for our fussy children at a reasonable price and various different menu options to suit every taste. The car park was totally full when we visited on a Monday lunchtime in May. Service was quick despite being busy and we were very glad we had chosen it as our lunch stop. 🙂

Great food at good prices, excellent service. We had a 4pm ferry to catch from Cherbourg and only an hour away this was the perfect place to stop for our last lunch in France this trip. We'd go back again next time too.

Me and my family wanted to try this restaurant but we were really disappointed. The waitress is unfriendly and unsmiling, her short dress was not adequate for her job. Our plats on the table, the flank steak that I ordered was undercooked and the salad was simply horrible. At first, I wanted to take the Normandy burger but the waitress told me, they didn't have received their steaks yet so they didn't have burgers anymore. I have learned that the burgers were only for those who are in the hotel. They also use poor quality products for their salads. My mom went to pay the bills and she said that there were ants on the counter, we even saw a water leak from the outside on the terrace. Their establishment is deplorable in addition to not being hygienic. I personally think it's too expensive for what they do. The positive point is the terrace and Camembert sauce for the flank steak. Really I don't recommend this restaurant, I don't even dare to imagine how it is in the kitchen or in the hotel's rooms. I won't come back, that's for sure.

As a dessert I had a mouthwatering lemon pastry with creme legere. All three courses were among the best food I had during my holiday in France, which has been going on for 10 days so far. The bad reviews for the "Escapade" on Google are mainly concerned with the hotel. They should not discourage you from trying out the restaurant. You would miss out on an excellent dinner.

The"bathroom"was so small and dirty, you couldn't close the door while sitting on the loo. The food was not good, the house wine worse, only redeemed at breakfast with the fresh bread. All on all The worst hotel I've stayed in outside of Asia.

Had dinner here once on D-day week. The restaurant was out of most things on the menu. All they could offer was fried meat with pepper sauce and fries. Some of us got a decent piece of meat. Others a less than decent piece... During the “frye up” the whole restaurant got a bit foggy due to lack of kitchen fans. I suppose they did what they could on a busy week but the overall experience could have been better.

This restaurant offers good local cuisine, a lovely tap beer selection, super friendly family staff, and lovely views of the canal and the Carentan cathedral.

Came for evening meal with kids. Were a little sceptical at first as it looked a bit run down, but food was superb and service very good. Frog decorations adorn every surface! We shared a fish and chips and a smoked salmon salad. Had some nice blonde beer by La Chouffe which was on tap. The battered fish was excellent and well seasoned. The salad came with way more salmon than I think we would get in the UK. The kids’ meals (gammon and chips, burger and chips) were absolutely massive and as they let us try, were also very tasty. All very reasonably priced. Would visit again. 👍🏼

Really busy lunchtime, but were able to accommodate us. Pizza was a bit meh. Not enough tomato sauce covering the pizza base. There were large areas of plain dough all around the outside. Not the best pizza I've ever had.

Stayed here as part of a school trip where we had almost sole use of the hotel, has semi convenient location in the middle of Normandy. Has smallish rooms with limited appliances, but facilities were useful where provided. Staff were friendly and helpful and room service was good quality. Overall would recommend for tourism.

Nice restaurant staff but room was awful. Blood stains on lamp, cigarette burns in bedding, a bath/shower that didn't work properly and a useless receptionist.

The people working there are really nice and very helpful. I couldn't hear road traffic from the room and they have secure bike storage.

One would assume the classiest restaurant in Carentan. We were only there because la wife forgot to bring her thyroid medication and the pharmacies were shut until 2pm. It's Nouvelle Cuisine centred on sea food and it's really, really good. Top tip is that we had no idea it was open even with opened umbrellas so they really need to emphasise that. We were the only shmucks in the open, everyone else (the locals) were inside having their 27 plates over 6 hours. Recommended. Enjoy.

I only have it a star because that's the least I could give it. The food was by far one of the worst meals I've ever had and I eat out quite often. Everything is frozen and just reheated and put on a plate. No flavor and jar toppings added on. Our waitress was excellent and very funny and apologize for the food being horrible but the owner did nothing about the meal. Stay away or just try for yourself and see.

Tonight we went to this restaurant. As starter we took the camambert to share. This one was really nice, great taste. Unfortunately the spareribs we ate as main course weren't that good. The taste was good, but my partners spareribs were ice cold. I started eating mine and those were warm, or as I thought. My partner send his spareribs back, they came back after a couple of minutes but it was obvious they had been put in the microwave. As I ate further I noticed the end of my spareribs was also cold. Because we know the spareribs had been put in the microwave, we really enjoyed our meal less. Portions of meat were also not really big, it's mostly fries you get. Waitress also didn't speak English which made it really difficult to communicate.

We really enjoyed our evening meal at the beginning of Septemeber. The staff were friendly and very polite, the service was good and the staff very attentive. We decided to eat here because we really fancied mussels and having walked around the square in the town centre this was the only restaurant that we could see who had them on their menu. The interior has significantly changed and is no longer like the photos on Google reviews, and it now appears to be aimed at the much younger peoples evening economy, we wish the new owner success in this venture. We shall not return because we're older and more restaurant orientated but don't let that put you youngsters off, give it a go as it may be the best place you've been.

He refused to give the children the desert that was on their menu. He was extremely rude. His staff were beyond incompetent. The meal was well below average. Unclean and unkept. We had a quick dinner, the brasserie looked semi-inviting. The joining restaurant was packed and this restaurant half filled. The wait for ordering took long, and even for the drink to arrive even longer, after more then an hour the food arrived. The restaurant looked disorganised. Some waiters were friendly, others flipped their eyeballs up when asking them a simple question. The food was greasy, cheaply prepared, my wife even had fish and chips that clearly came from a frozen supermarket product. The 'homemade' Fries were soaked in grease and soft. My tartare was pretty much tartare without noticeble other ingredients, I even cut up some onions from the garnish to make it anywhere interesting. Visited for family evening meal with kids as staying in local BnB, and was one of the few places open on that Sunday evening. Food was fantastic. We had a napolitana pizza with capers and anchovies, and a goats cheese and honey. Both were rich in flavour and well seasoned. Dough was lovely and light. Kids had the set menu, and chose the margherita pizza. This came out cleverly shaped like a rabbit which amused them, and then they said the coffee ice cream was the best they’ve ever had! Friendly staff who were patient with our poor French. Service good and not intrusive. Toilet nice and clean and there is a newish extension to the building too. Plenty of parking nearby on the streets. Music played in background for atmosphere but not too loud.

We enjoyed tasty salads, pizza and antipasti. Our daughter’s ‘bambina’ pizza was as large as my own, but came out in a heart shape, which she loved (this may not always be the case; they were not busy when we were there). We definitely recommend this restaurant for a testy, relaxing meal.
