Bar & grill
The Fossgate Social is a trendy and cozy hangout located in the vibrant area of York. The interior boasts an industrial-chic style with exposed piping, brick walls, and a bar made from reclaimed timber. This two-story coffee bar offers a variety of craft beers, classic cocktails, and excellent coffee served with pastries throughout the day. Run by siblings Mike and Sarah Lakin, it's nestled among other independent establishments on Fossgate, known as York's foodie quarter.
Friendly staff and a great atmosphere in the evening and during the day too. The honey margarita is one of the best cocktails I've ever had! Revisited multiple times during our visit just for the margaritas. Would highly recommend!
Emily S — Google review
It is not big but is popular with groups and couples. They have an upstairs but it's too popular so try the patio outside past the loos. Room to sit and chat without being crowded . They stock a variety of beers. The cocktail menu is a wide choice with all staff able to create them. You can see the care being used to create them.
Keith D — Google review
A thoroughly enjoyable evening at Fossgate Social. Had splendid drinks and the atmosphere was quite perfect. Only note would be more ‘naners, didn’t see a lot of ‘naners in here 🍌.
Zander D — Google review
Absolutely love this place the cocktails are just divine. All the staff are fab but a special shout out to Albert for making the most delicious Bramble I've had in years! Husband had the Banana man and felt the same!
Samantha M — Google review
Lovely little place. Combines doing good coffee and tea, with craft beer on tap and cocktails. Add in delicious toasties including a decent vegan one and we were happy here. Nice friendly team, they checked a beer for me to make sure was vegan ( it was) . I know where I'm returning too next time in York
Jp R — Google review
Lovely Daiquiri cocktail and a nice beer selection too. Nice atmosphere and service.
ShaunBond — Google review
Deiced to visit for a nice craft beer and the menu was reasonable, not too much local stuff but that is fine. The staff were were indifferent and clearly not interested in beer. I was disappointed when I requested a half pint but they said that they only served 2/3rds. I understand this with regards to high percentage, normally craft beer, where pints are ill advised, but not the otherway around. Cynically it feels like a cash grab, but maybe they just don't have the glasses. I was not a fan of the seating, it was uncomfortable especially where I was with a pillar wedged into my back with no wiggle room around the table. I didn't enjoy the vibe, it felt like a place where dates flounder, indecisive over what the place wanted to be. Coffee shop and craft beer don't mix and I found the pairing uncomfortable. However, I did enjoy my beer and maybe I am not the target audience.
James B — Google review
My partner popped in here the previous evening to get out of the rain. We nipped in the following day as they have craft beer. I was shocked to see cakes for sale on the bar uncovered! I found this place to be cold, miserable and very dirty. I couldn't wait to get out, the staff were underwhelming too.

Charcuterie
Sotano Charcuterie & Bar in York is a cozy, low-lit spot offering classic tapas dishes and a variety of cocktails, beer, and wine. The rustic wooden interiors create a warm ambiance perfect for indulging in their exquisite selection of charcuterie. Since its establishment in 2012, this underground speakeasy has relied on word of mouth to attract guests who appreciate the artful mixology and the carefully curated menu.
We was visiting york from sheffield. We wanted to try a backstreet restaurant. And stumbled on this. Absolutely brilliant place. Indoor and outdoor roof top. But the food was amazing. Would highly recommend. And the service spot on.

Food excellent with portion size generally good we went out using a offer of bottle of wine and 5 tapas for £40 as it was Feb it was a little quieter , maybe in summer it will be even better will go again
Kev R — Google review
Visited York for one night and found this very nice and cozy bar with friendly staff. There was an open mic happening which was also very cool. Drinks were tasty and sophisticated. Definitely recommend.
Karolin R — Google review
Myself and my girlfriend had our first experience eating at Sotano of york Saturday night. What an amazing time we had. The service was excellent, we were well looked after a great big thank you to you all. The food was absolutely perfect we love tapas and that was the best we have had. Atmosphere was electric lots of people enjoying the whole Sotano experience with music playing. I highly recommend Sotano for an experience you will never forget. We will be back soon. Keep up the fantastic work. 👏
Robert D — Google review
Gorgeous little Tapas - food was amazing- lovely staff, great atmosphere- outside tera e was really comfy and we loved the Sangria!
Rebecca P — Google review
This underground tapas restaurant and cocktail bar is well worth a visit. The atmosphere is probably the best thing here. Dark with above lighting creates a nice space to dine or meet with a partner. Drinks were very good - wine and cocktails. Service was excellent 👌. Really attentive service to the table and was there for several hours. Food was very good and went for the different tapas plates. Tapas bravas with both the garlic and tomatoe sauces was a winner. Also enjoyed the padron peppers which are crucial to any tapas. Tuna salad was good but maybe some seasoning in here would have boosted it. The deep fried items were of a good standard as were the sauces. Thanks very much for a nice evening here.
Hywel M — Google review
Located in a basement with confused wait staff - tapas served without flare. Made a reservation based upon the reviews but were disappointed when we were greeted by a bouncer on a Friday evening, demanding to know if we had a reservation before we could set foot inside. Once we passed the front door, we descended into an underground venue, and noticed that most of the chairs were backless stools. Our pate came straight from a jar, which it was served in, and the wait staff had absolutely no idea what was going on with any of the tables. Tapas were good, but nothing that would set the world on fire. Truthfully, I’m not sure we’d visit again as the club from next door was so loud all we could hear was thumping mixed with the ambient Light FM of the restaurant. Overall, distinctly average with nothing to make it stand out.
Michelle M — Google review
Popped in here and we were not disappointed. We fancied a glass of wine each and a small dish or two. Sure enough they had a brilliant small plates and wine offer. Superb value. I’d recommend the Anchovies and the chicken and Chorizo.

Cafe
The Habit Cafe Bar is a popular spot in York, known for its relaxed atmosphere and delicious charbroiled burgers, deli sandwiches, salads, and fries. It's not just a drinking establishment; it's a warm haven where locals, music lovers, and lifelong patrons gather to unwind and enjoy live music ranging from open-mic nights to jazzy tunes.
Fantastic place. Guinness served is of high quality. Wonderful place and staff super friendly, especially the chap with the American/south African accent whose name I didn't catch . Don't hesitate to visit ! We will be back
Runcorn W — Google review
Walking round York and looking for somewhere to get food and saw the reviews of this place. The man serving was really nice and friendly. However, the food was pretty average. I had the beef burger and chips. The patty was clearly frozen. Very 'cardboardy' and not tasty. Been years since I've had a burger this bad I'm afraid. My wife had the halloumi vegetable sandwich. The halloumi was cooked nicely and there was a few pieces of cooked courgette and a few pieces of pepper that was cut big and chunky (which doesn't really work in a sandwich!) And the bread was standard supermarket cheap thin sliced bread. I've never seen a sandwich in a cafe or restaurant served on supermarket sliced bread! On the plus side, the chips that came with both meals were nice. And my latte was also nice. Unfortunately we paid more than average for below average food! This might be a nice place for a drink in the evening but I couldn't recommend it for the food.
Sam S — Google review
Came here because the.place we were looking for was closed. I am happy to say it was a much better choice. The staff were really friendly and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing, perfect for a sunny day 😎 👌
Imane M — Google review
Called here for a drink as had been told of the roof top seating area. It was nice. I wasn’t blown away as it though as could have done with a clean/ spruce up! You could see the Minster over the wall. Bar staff very friendly. Overall nice to sit out and up.
Jo — Google review
Great spot, open mic night is especially good. Chilled crowd and amazing staff. Place was hopping and one bar staff on their own excelled in circumstances where I have seen a crew of several fail. If downstairs seems jammed, push on through to upstairs. Plenty of seating and you come still hear the music, maybe even better!
Gerard C — Google review
Love coming here on a sunny day in their sun trap terrace. Been a while since we've been and noticed the view of the minster is slightly covered by a new structure but still a fabulous place to enjoy a beer in York! Friendly staff and great selection of drinks. Need to come back and try the food.
Rebecca B — Google review
Always love the habit! Brilliant pub with a great atmosphere, staff are brill and i appreciate having somewhere to get a coffee later in the day. Only docked 1 star 🌟 to mention that they need to get fans in here for the staff. Was absolutely roasting yesterday and I couldn't believe there was nothing to help the staff keep cool, reflects badly on owners when they don't take more care of staff in simple ways like this. I've worked in the industry for 15yrs and just wanted to go behind the bar and help them, was pretty busy with the warm weather and the poor lass looked sweltered!
Helon M — Google review
One of the best bars/pubs in York! I was only in town for a night, and this place made it unforgettable. The live music and karaoke brought such a fun vibe, and the beer and food options were super affordable. Great spot for a fun night out if you’re in the area!

A little cautious at first as there weren’t many people in but we were early and it’s Thursday. We were not disappointed. Thursday offer of £40 for a steak dinner and wine for 2 and it was really good. Great cut of steak, cooked perfectly, amazing sauce, chips to die for (crisp doesn’t cover it) and really good wine. Superb music too. If we lived in York we would be here every Thursday. Shannon our server was friendly and welcoming. HIGHLY recommend
Sam D — Google review
A nice cosy pub with really friendly personable service. The roast dinners looked amazing, but I found my halloumi burger to be quite dry. Would return for a veggie roast if back in York but skip the burger!
Aili S — Google review
Lovely rooftop terrace which is great on a sunny day. Staff are friendly and attentive. Food was small plates tapas style and sharing boards. Not the best tapas we have ever had, didn't blow me away but was tasty and nicely presented. We enjoyed the vibe.

We came for steak night (2 steaks and a bottle of wine £39.95). The quality of food, service and atmosphere was fab!

Absolutely beautiful meal. Was shocked to find places empty but stayed anyway and was so glad we did. Food was first rate and staff amazing. Highly recommend it you want good value meal in York.

I hired the upstairs room and outside terrace for a private birthday party. The food was excellent and many guests commented on how good it was (chose entirely vegetarian but there are other options). The atmosphere was lovely with fairy lights and candles. Bar staff were great. All round an excellent venue. Several people tried to get in from downstairs, where it was very lively, but we politely turned them away and that worked.!

Came this Wednesday, October 22nd, myself and my boyfriend . We noticed Kennedys on our way to the york minster, buy one get one free on burgers on a Wednesday 🍔 BARGIN! And popped in on our way back about 3.30pm It was about 1/4 full and staff served us quickly and with a smile ( which is rare nowadays) 2 burgers 2 fries and 1 drink ( under £20 ) We were given water and lemon in a jug when we arrived . Love that touch ! Will be back. Filled me up nicely for a late lunch x

Guests have praised the cozy atmosphere and efficient service, along with the delicious bar snacks and cocktails. The venue is known for its luxurious bottomless brunch option where guests can enjoy tailored-to-you brunch boards accompanied by 90 minutes of bottomless drinks at an additional cost.
Very nice place, really cool botany aesthetic. The ultimate chicken burger was so incredibly good, the cocktails are really interesting and they taste great. The staff are also all very nice, especially Molly who served us.

Came here with a party of 12 for a pre booked table. The service was spot on. Bar staff and waitress were helpful, polite and also had took the time to have a conversation with us. The food was absolutely amazing. I had the chicken wings for starters and the shared kebab for mains. No complaints with the food at all. Price.... Ever so slightly higher than what I expected, however this didn't take anything away from the overall experience. Would happily come back here again.
Paul B — Google review
For mine the highlight of my visit to The Botanist York is the service. What a great group of young people! Happy, smiling, attentive and helpful. Ohh and don’t forget the menus a quality of the food on offer. A1….
Darran L — Google review
I was really shocked whilst our starters were very nice, they were luke warm. The service was so slow and we were pretty much ignored. Our previous experience wasn't like this at all. Our starters arrived before our drinks and my main meal was inedible. My husband ate some of his hanging kebab as he was starving but it wasn't as good as our previous visit. I have never sent a meal back before. It did make us laugh when the waitress suggested we order dessert. In replacement of a main meal. Unfortunately I wouldn't go again based on this.
Nadine E — Google review
What can I say about such a wonderful place. The food is great, service from Ben tonight was great, he even up sold a pudding with just 2 words "Cookie Dough" and he wasn't wrong. We went here for an evening bite but will be going back for lunch and a hanging kebab as I had food envy of others dinning there tonight.
Luke M — Google review
It was fine - food and drinks nice, no draft beer because of the heat. Bar service only where we could sit hence the lower stars as that wasn’t what we went for. Prices have increased a bit with the new menu though I understand this (general cost of everything!). Key reason for my review is to highlight that it is no longer dog friendly in the restaurant- you can sit in the bar which was fine on a quieter Sunday afternoon but realistically it’s no longer somewhere you can go out to eat and bring a dog, most of the time. Good news for some I am sure, but it was a bit disappointing for me and I expect will be for others who have been before!
Mairead K — Google review
We weren't sure if we wanted food or just drinks. We settled on just drinks, the bartender was friendly, and the drinks were nice. Pubs aren't really my scene, but once I'd settled in, I found the atmosphere nice and relaxing. I think coming in on a weekday helped. I can imagine it being a nice place to come in the evening, though.

The Hop York is a Victorian-style drinking den with ornate pendant lights, tiled floors and walls, and a mahogany bar. As you venture further in, the decor transitions to contemporary chic with exposed brickwork, skylights, wooden flooring, and live music on Fridays. The open kitchen serves excellent stone-baked pizzas that pair well with their extensive drinks list. Located on Fossgate, it offers traditional beers and ales alongside craft beers from nearby breweries.
Long and narrow pub with a lot of character. A different selection of tap beers, real ales and craft beers available. Staff were friendly and polite. Camera discount also available. Nice oldy worldy pub with old style coloured tiles on the walls and great chandeliers. Beer was great. Enjoyed my visit.
Paul P — Google review
Great looking pub with loads of real ale on. Lots of Salt Brewery and Ossett Brewery in the main. Music was very rock orientated which I thoroughly approve of. Didn't try the pizza so can't comment on the food. The only downside for me was the gentleman and girl behind the bar both looked really miserable and didn't smile at all. Maybe they had had a busy shift or something, I don't know, but they were bar far the least communicative and happy staff we saw out in York all night. The man even managed to gives us pints instead of halves, but he looked so miserable and unhelpful we didn't bother mentioning it and just drank what he gave us.
Sean H — Google review
Went on a Friday night to see the live music, the band was great and created a really lively atmosphere. Had the pizzas too and they were delicious and really fresh, you could see them being made. Bar staff were quick and helpful during a busy shift. Overall a great spot!

Dusk is a unique and lively establishment in the heart of York, offering a dual experience as a cozy coffeehouse during the day and transforming into a vibrant cocktail bar with live music at night. The venue exudes an eccentric charm reminiscent of Evil Eye, featuring an elusive magician who entertains guests with mesmerizing tricks. The cocktail menu boasts creatively named drinks like the Phil Collins and Graham Norton, adding to the bar's allure.
This was the most chill and insanely interesting spot to drink at, the drinks (we had at happy hour 2 for the price of one cocktails) were phenomenal I recommend the Graham Norton 100% The bar staff were quite lovely and chill, and though I didn’t try the food it looks mind blowingly delicious! Fun names for cocktails is a big highlight though, a bit of a conversation starter. I recorded a moment at the place, to show others the vibes of locations I’ve traveled/visited and this was worth the moment indeed.

This place is a hidden little gem! After a disappointing entry refusal due to having a pram from the eatery next door, dusk welcomed us with open arms to their spacious venue. The staff were SOOO friendly and catered for the children in our party ranging from 3-9 years. It was spacious and welcoming. The drinks were insanely cheap but good quality and the food was SCRUMPTIOUS. we had the sharing platter and I couldn't recommend it more!! Excellent quality for money! It was a lovely place to catch your breath, have a rest and some yummy food during a busy Saturday outing in York. I know where we will be eating during every visit from now on!

Sora is a rooftop bar and restaurant situated on the seventh floor of the Malmaison Hotel in York. It offers stunning panoramic views of the city and provides both indoor and outdoor seating options. The menu features Pan-Asian style small plates, sushi, and a variety of cocktails. While some visitors found the ambiance to be slightly pretentious, many appreciated the friendly staff and enjoyable music.
Superb! Excellent food, served very quickly by friendly, efficient staff who were only too happy to explain everything. Very reasonably priced - we had a beer each and as you can see from the photos, ate our fill, and the whole meal for two was just under £100. We'll definitely re-visit next time we visit York. Highly recommended.
Paul H — Google review
Food was exceptional but service was shockingly bad. Place was not full and yet we waited 20 mins after being sat at a wobbly table for me to then have to ask if we could order a drink. We then were told 2 of the advertised as special drinks were not available. We then moved inside after a while to have our afternoon tea as we told the waitress but after 15 mins I wasn't sure if she had put the order in. I had to catch a waitress attention who was chatting at the bar and the order had not been put in. The food when it came was so amazing and the presentation was something I will always remember. Belly pork and sushi were exceptional. The bill already comes with food service and drink service charges which seems wrong as it is something we would normally add myself. If we were not brought the food they would not have any business, seems a very cheeky way of adding. Matcha scones were tough but the Kumquat jam was amazing. Came away feeling underwhelmed at the experience I had been looking forward to for 5 months.

Came here to celebrate my birthday and had such a nice time. The staff were so friendly, the food thoughtful and delicious, and the views unprecedented.
Kath B — Google review
We had a table booked for the rooftop bar yet they still sat us inside in what appeared to be more of a restaurant than a bar. We were not near any windows so could not see the beautiful views we had paid to see. This felt like any other restaurant at this point. Be warned when booking the rooftop bar you will inevitably be seated in this room as it acted as a holding room for when you table is actually ready. We saw multiple groups of people with bookings be sat in this room and then escorted to the rooftop when their table was ready. Eventually we were taken to our table we had originally booked on the terrace. After this we had a lovely time and the atmosphere was very good. Price is very expensive but you pay for the atmosphere. I did look at the menu and saw some deals that looked pretty good value for money.

We had a lovely lunch at Sora! We had the vegan bento boxes and all the food was lovely. It was definitely enough for lunch but we were itching to try more things off the menu so we left VERY full. View is amazing and the atmosphere makes the food taste even better. All the staff were lovely, especially the main waitress helping us throughout the lunch (16/7/2025).

Food was very disappointing, overcooked meat, to much sauce that covered the taste of the food. makis had been made in advance and left in the fridge, so the rice was hard. This place is not for foodies. I would only recommend for a drink as long as you get a view of the Minster. I was disapointed because it was supposed to be treat for my birthday.

For a small family get together to celebrate our twin girl's 18th, our time at Sora was a near perfect experience. The service was kind, personal, patient, polite and professional from the moment we arrived, to the moment we left. Our choices of tapas style dishes was ideal (3 each, plus a few sides) and the staff team took time to give us very helpful advice to guide our choices. All of the dishes arrived nicely prepared and presented, and the cocktails also proved very popular. A complimentary shot of citronella/vodka for each of our girls was a charming and well received touch too. Many thanks to everyone at Sora York for helping to make an important family moment special. 10/10 from us.

I’ve been here a couple of times before for the set lunch menu, bottomless Prosecco, and cocktails, this time I went with my boyfriend for date night and it was amazing! Service was so attentive even on a fully booked Saturday night, food came out in good time and was delicious. On Saturday evenings they have a violinist and she played beautifully. Food, drinks and service 10/10, we definitely recommend but definitely book at least a week in advance.

What a superb atmosphere ! Located in the Grand Hotel in York, you can feel the history in the walls and the funiture. Service is classy and efficient. An ideal location for meeting or some speakeasy moments...
Ludovic G — Google review
We visited for quiet celebratory drinks and were served by a lovely, friendly waitress who made us feel welcome. However, our experience was unfortunately overshadowed by another staff member—a blonde lady with curly hair—who refused to serve two single vodka shots without ice, claiming the hotel wasn’t licensed to do so. This explanation felt implausible and frankly baffling. If a venue is licensed to sell alcohol, it should not be imposing arbitrary conditions on how it’s served, especially when the request is both reasonable and standard. The inconsistency in service and the dismissive attitude left a poor impression. Hospitality should be rooted in clarity, professionalism, and customer care—sadly, that wasn’t reflected in this interaction.

The Terrace Sports Bar & Kitchen is a spacious sports tavern with a casual atmosphere, offering familiar English dishes, tap brews, and cocktails. It provides various dining options from modern British cuisine to contemporary afternoon tea. Visitors praise the excellent atmosphere and great service despite the pub being packed. Some guests were disappointed by not being able to reserve a table for live sports events. However, many patrons still enjoyed the amazing food, particularly the double burgers which were described as thick, juicy, and perfectly cooked.
Lovely place staff very friendly my daughter got cheese n beans toasty. Chunky chips nice, nice sports bar. Definitely recommend

Nice bar. Reasonable prices for York. Had the large fish finger sandwich, which was basically a small fish in a sub. Nice big chips, but because of the size they wasn't very crispy. If they're gonna serve chips that big, they need to be double fried in beef dripping to get the chips described in the menu. Overall, I wouldn't go back.

Amazing staff! Really welcoming and helpful. I went in to see a specific Olympic event and they searched around and got it for me, thanks guys. Food I had was fine.

It’s the first time I’ve been here since the company moved premises last year! I have to say that the decor is much more refreshed and welcoming! There’s a large bar with a great selection of drinks. Plenty of screens to watch sports including giant screens above the bar and at the back.
Elisa W — Google review
Not very welcoming. We were looking for a place to get some lunch and have a few drinks. But were curtly asked to leave as soon as we sat down by a member of staff because my youngest son had carried in a sealed, unopened bubble tea that he’d bought from round the corner and they took exception. Fine. That’s £120 I went and spent in another of the many welcoming pubs in the city centre. The place was unusually almost empty on a weekday lunchtime during half term, while almost every other pub and restaurant in the vicinity was packed, but having experienced their lack of hospitality first hand and then read some reviews, it’s very easy to understand why. It’s a wonder they’re able to remain in business. Avoid at all costs. There are many better places that will value your custom within under a minute’s walk. EDIT- (in retort to what seems to be the characteristic, dismissive response from the management of this dive bar): The next pub down the road didn’t care about my young boy’s soft drink and welcomed us with great service, great food, live sport and a great range of drinks. So we spent all afternoon spending our money in there. It’s your loss entirely. 🤡

One of the best Sports Bars I've been to and definitely the best in York. Very well run. The team clearly understand what watching football in a pub is all about.

Horrible hospitality. Ordered drinks in the first half of the match and while we waiting for the second half for the other drinks been asked to live. Cocky and not smart security and the possibly I believe he was the owner. Not recommended. Also need to add after owner's answer, ordered carling and guiness plus as explained was waiting for the second half and told that to the owner as well. Can proof with bank statement lol. Nobody has to drink back to back or fast, put a warning on the door as drink fast then :)

Located on the outskirts of York's center in Fulford, The Fulford Arms is not your average pub. This venue has evolved into a vibrant music space that hosts an array of live performances, drawing in both local and national artists as well as international acts. With a capacity for 150 people, it offers an intimate setting to enjoy diverse musical genres and discover new talent. The atmosphere is friendly and inviting, making it a great spot to unwind with a pint while taking in some fresh tunes.
This has been my go to bar for the last two years. Great music, but more importantly amazing staff. If you want a Sunday roast this is not for you, if you want a positively charged music venue, with friendly staff and a myriad of drink choices, get yourself there. Gutted I have to move away, my time at the Fulford Arms has been second to none. I will return!

Fantastic little venue. Out of the way so little chance of trouble from passing idiots and easy to find. The venue is well laid out, clean and looks and sounds excellent! The only issue, if you can call it that, is the stage is floor level so it can be very hard to actually see the bands, especially from the back, but the sound is excellent. I'm looking forward to my next visit!

Wow. Just wow. The candlelight concert of Ed Sheeran and Coldplay was unreal. The atmosphere was great, quiet but you could tell that people were enjoying it. The staff were friendly and the facilities were very clean and up-to-date. I would give it 6 stars if I could. A MUST visit in York

A superb performance by a young classical trained string quartet. They engaged with the audience and played a selection of popular Ed S and Coldplay tracks. About an hour in duration, so no interval. Bar available on arrival at this lovely, intimate venue. The stage area was set dressed with 100s of candles (battery powered) giving a calm, serene quality. We loved the event and would go again.

Absolutely awful experience. Tried to have a good night out on my birthday only to be kicked out with a dead phone at 2am alone in the cold. Paid for entry only to be wrongfully kicked out on a baseless suspicion that I had "thrown up in the toilets" when in reality I was literally just taking a piss in a stall. My visit to the bathroom was interrupted by an overzealous bouncer banging on the door, making assumptions that I had been throwing up in there. I was then escorted out without a second thought for this. Later when I asked to clarify the situation, the manager refused to provide the name of the bouncer responsible, intentionally making the complaint process convoluted. The manager also took zero interest in anything I had to say regarding my situation. They would rather protect their staffs imprudent decisions than ensure fair treatment of paying customers. Avoid this place if you want a decent night out in York. Trust every prior 1 star review as it seems they're intentionally denying themselves business and patrons. Toilets had no locks and the floor was covered in piss with an unbearable smell.
Shay B — Google review
Management is awful here! Was attending this venue for a private wedding party at 7:30pm and they rejected us because we had a minor. Minors we allowed at the venue until 9pm but the manager was rude and up himself so decided to throw a little temper tantrum to seem like the big guy. Honestly a real shame because we wanted to celebrate with our best friends after them getting married but JOBSWORTH so beware x

Unironically heard a bouncer laugh at a girl after denying her entrance and call her "fatty". That was 2 months ago hopefully you've taught ur bouncers basic human manners but I do not think so since a week ago I saw someone in management yell at a young girl to the point she started crying. How pathetic!! Toilets are rank, but bar stuff are good.

The dj was amazing, its such a clean non sweaty club - very underrated - drinks prices were pretty standard and they did have some decent deals on. Highly recommend for a night out in york 🫶
Tonia R — Google review
I've been to Kuda a few times now and it is definitely one of my least favourite places to go out in York. While the bar staff were friendly the bouncers were rude and seem to have let their position of power go to their heads, watching them scream in the faces of teenagers isn't exactly a nice way to start a night. The toilets were very dirty, although that seems to be the case for most clubs, and in general the place seemed sticky so I tried to avoid touching or leaning on surfaces. I asked a few other people what they thought to hopefully make my review a bit more rounded and they had similar issues to what I have raised so far, on a more positive side there was a lot of praise for the music which I would agree with, the general consensus was most people were only there because their friends were. Similarly, I would not be likely to choose Kuda for a night out again unless I was with a good group of people. Where some clubs are genuinely a positive experience the best part of my night was the people I spent it with, and we could have done that at home for free.

We travelled from Manchester to see wet wet wet, here. What a great venue, not too big and great view! My friend had a broken toe, and was using a stick to walk. Jane looked after us, and moved us to a more accessible seat. She really did go above and beyond to help us, which made it alot easier for my friend. Jane was a lovely lady, chatted to us and made us feel so welcome.. We'll definitely come back again, and will be keeping an eye out for future shows/gigs.

Friendly, helpful and welcoming, really added to the positive experience. Overall, a wonderful visit. I’d definitely come back for another show!

Well second row and the Barbican have put up these screens left and right of stage - why? It’s blocking nearly half of the performers from min and my wife’s view. Went last night to see Urzila Carlson, the sound and show were great, definitely recommend. The downside to this venue is the pricing of the drinks. £8.25 for a pint of beer or cider. I dont pay that in a pub that's tied to a brewery so not sure why they are charging these ridiculous prices. Think you need to relook at your prices and not be so greedy.

This is an Amazing place. One thing spoils it, the music is far too loud, and often an awful choice. Why spoil such a beautiful place, it is not necessary, people are so happy just chatting. We do not need to suffer the horrendous music. Can you turn down the volume, and perhaps something more soothing. Heavy metal blasting out is the last thing the bar eating area needs???

Susan P — Google review
I have had many good experiences at City Screen over the years, but my recent experience there has put me off returning. I visited with my 20 year old daughter and, while she found a seat, I went to the bar to order a prosecco for myself and a wine for her. The server, who said his name was Will (he was early 20s, brown curly hair, and tall) had spotted my daughter and asked me for her ID. She had her university ID available on her phone but not her physical ID, which he said he could not accept. This was fair enough - if that doesn’t meet their policy, I accept that. What was unacceptable, however, was the treatment we received afterwards. I ordered a lemonade for my daughter instead, but the server became unnecessarily aggressive. He told us that he would be “watching us,” and made it very clear, almost threateningly, that if my daughter so much as took so much as a sip of my drink, we’d be kicked out. This went unnecessarily far beyond standard policy. We were under constant surveillance, as he watched us through the window for the rest of our visit, prioritising this over serving customers. As two women, it felt intimidating, harassing, and frankly humiliating. I respect their ID policy entirely, but there is no excuse for staff to make customers feel attacked or uncomfortable. A simple “sorry, we can’t accept that ID” would have sufficed. Unfortunately, because of the way we were treated, I will not be returning. I would advise other women to be wary.

Came upon this cafe by accident as it's a little away outside the main tourist areas of York. Music based cafe with an emphasis on Country Music although the background music was from all types. Great atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. Coffee was average but our toasted sandwiches were great. Would happily visit again.

Stumbled across this gem as we walking into the city centre from the NCP carpark & our accommodation for the night. Love vinyl so it was appealing from the off set. We had a latte which was really good. They had music playing & it gave the place a great atmosphere. So the next morning we called in for a toastie & that did not let us down. Didn't really look at the large selection of vinyl records as it was starting to fill up & we were pressed for time. If I'm every back in York (I will be) then this will definitely (maybe) bet the place for a coffee & a quick bite.

Such a brilliant place for any oasis, blur, stone roses fan you will love it! Atmosphere is unreal! Music blaring pints aren’t bad either
Dan P — Google review
Always have the best best time at stones! The bouncers are lovely! And in particular the bar member Josh he was a massive help and so so lovely! I recommend this bar very highly. Updated us about our friends every step of the way, couldn’t appreciate it more! EVERYONE GO TO STONE ROSES
Hannah D — Google review
Toilets were blocked with vomit and little plastic bags, sunglasses were taken and once I put £5 in the jukebox it was banging 👌 Good bar staff and yes I'd go again to mecca

You can't come to York without visiting this great bar. Popped in for a few drinks late afternoon staff chatty. Drinks a good price and they have made a lovely job of their refurbishment. Still same vibe.

Live music bar
Wine bar
The Hi Ho Club is a laid-back spot that offers a variety of New York Italian-inspired dishes, including pizzas, sandwiches, and meat boards. The cocktail bar adds to the casual atmosphere and hosts burlesque shows for entertainment. Visitors can enjoy the "speak easy" ambiance with blues music on Thursdays and jazz on Sundays. The venue's decor and secret password contribute to its speakeasy vibe, making it an exciting place to be in the know.
Hi Ho 2 does not offer pizza so please don't get confused folks. What it does offer is an intimate, private-style speakeasy experience. We struggled to find it at first, all part of the fun, and cleverly disguised above other venues and office block style rooms. It is a very small venue, but so cosy and friendly. The staff were friendly and helpful, table service. The drinks were top notch, if you're not used to paying for cocktails, be assured these were good value and great quality. Live music was simple but fabulous, perfect for the venue style and atmosphere. If you do your research you will understand the passion and hard work going into The Hi Ho 2 which just made us appreciate it all the more. Will definitely return.

We did a cocktail masterclass with Charlie (the owner), and it was absolutely fantastic! Charlie was incredibly knowledgeable and explained each cocktail in detail, answering all of our (many!) questions with patience and passion. It was super interactive and hands-on, which made it even more fun. What I loved most was that the cocktails weren’t overly complicated — no hard-to-find ingredients, just things you probably already have at home or can easily pick up in store. I now feel confident making them myself! Highly recommend this experience — it was fun, informative, and such a great way to spend an evening

Every time we come to York we make an effort to stop here at least one evening. Drinks are always good, service is excellent and atmosphere is more than exceptional. Also love that every time we come more and more is added to the decor.

I privately hired hi ho club for a hen do, and Charlie was fantastic in accommodating the group. She was communicative throughout the entire planning process, flexible, and answered the silliest questions from me. The team on the day made the bride and the group feel welcome and really made an effort to ensure we had a great day.

A fantastic find in York. A secret club. Great live music. The decor is themed on an American speak easy. You will have to book your visit, then you will be given a secret password to enter. Just brilliant
Bob R — Google review
Amazing!! Absolutely loved it and the people behind the bar were so welcoming and friendly. We were sad we had a dinner reservation to get to! Could have spent all night there

TikTok for the win again! Someone posted a video about their experience here so we thought we’d try it for a night! How fun! They even had their Halloween drink menus! Highly recommend Salems Curse! It was so yummy! The bartenders were loads of fun and so lovely. What a great place to find…..that is, if you can. ;)

Drinks are very strong but soooooo good. Complementary water is very much welcome. The atmosphere is top notch. Love it here, come all the time. Only point of improvement- larger selection of mocktails please! :)

Live music venue
Bar
Nestled in the heart of York, The York Vaults is a charming traditional pub that doubles as a cozy B&B, offering comfortable rooms for those looking to unwind after enjoying an evening of live music. This independent venue prides itself on being a grassroots music hub, showcasing emerging artists and local talent almost every night of the week. With its intimate atmosphere and wooden paneling, it’s the perfect spot for music lovers seeking something off the beaten path.
Had a brilliant night here watching Cillirion, great venue.

This has become my favourite live music venue. When big bands have a got so expensive an affordable night with a good cover band or two is a great way to get your live band fix! Some of them are seriously good imitations, and the setting is much more intimate. Decent drinks offering including some pleasant surprises on guest cask. Brass Castle’s Bad Kitty was on excellent form on my last visit as was Jack Sabbath!

This place is great for a gig but also just the BEST party venue ever! My 50th party 🥳 was a total ball! Brilliant team and couldn't have asked for more. Thank you Vaults 😊 See you for a little Sunday session soon!

Obviously, they are running down their stock as they prepare for closure. Went there on Friday for a private function and it was very disappointing, which is a shame really. I've been to several live events there and they've always had a good bar.
Frank D — Google review
Great venue , plenty of beer choices, only issue is the time the main act comes on that's only as iv a 10.40 train to catch . However a great place ,great bands ,great beer. Friendly staff.well worth a visit.

Oasis v Kasabian ( except the latter due to illness couldnt play) so it was v Arctic Mankeys. Good effort by the stand ins but Oasis got it for me. 👍 Re visited for The Fu Fighters. Less manic than for the above, which was good. Beavertown Neck Oil along with some cask at the bar.

Great place to listen to live band (started at 8:30pm) and I like how they have ear plugs out for people to use! The crowds are older but I still had a fun time listening the local band playing and stayed for a while 😃 cheers!
