Distillery
Food & Drink
Oban Distillery, established in the 18th century, is a must-visit for whisky enthusiasts. Situated at the heart of Oban town, it offers guided tours and tastings led by knowledgeable staff. The distillery's rich history and production process make it an ideal spot for couples seeking a memorable experience. With its two pot stills, Oban Distillery stands out as one of Scotland's most accessible whisky distilleries.
I already knew Oban was a well-crafted whisky. What I learned on the platinum tour was just how impressive their artistry is. From how they treat their natural maturation, their sustainability efforts (seriously, this was something that should be spoken more from them!), to how cask strength shows up on the glass, it was brilliant. Big, big shout out to Mike, our guide. You can tell he is a passionate individual about Oban, and you can't not get excited with him. He brings a good sense of humour alongside his knowledge, and again the care he has for the whisky is evident. I would recommend this tour for beginners to vets, as the appreciate for this liquid gold applies to us all.

I'm not really a drinker, and definitely not of whisky if I do, but my husband wanted to do the tour on our day trip to Oban, so I got dragged along. Marty, our guide, was funny, informative, friendly and made the tour enjoyable (even for me who was clueless about the whole whisky making process). My husband enjoyed the 3 whisky samples along the way, Marty offered me mine to take home but I wasn't fussed. We did all get an Oban whisky glass to take home though. Interesting tour and enjoyed learning the process, there is a bar area inside to wait in for your tour to start and a shop.
Sophie T — Google review
A lovely and interesting tour. Our guide, Gavin, spoke very engagingly and passionately about the distillery and the whisky. He was also incredibly knowledgeable and conveyed this knowledge in a captivating way, with a touch of humor. It was also particularly nice that there was a special tasting package for those who still had to drive.
Ron S — Google review
We had a great time on our tour with Kevin! He kept us laughing and kept the whisky and history of Oban flowing! Very nice facility in a quaint seaside village. Great value for price paid.

Having visited numerous distilleries across Scotland, Oban Distillery stands out as one of the an exceptional experience that shouldn’t be missed. This historic distillery, nestled in the heart of the port town, offers an intimate tour showcasing their remarkable two-still operation and sustainable practices. What truly sets Oban apart is their passionate, knowledgeable staff who bring infectious enthusiasm to every aspect of the whisky-making process. The tour cleverly incorporates tastings throughout, allowing you to appreciate their craftsmanship firsthand. Whether you’re a whisky novice or seasoned enthusiast, Oban’s authentic atmosphere, expert guidance, and impressive artistry make it a standout destination that perfectly balances education with genuine Scottish hospitality.
Antony T — Google review
Had a nice tour of the distillery and learnt how whisky is made. Our guide Ross was very knowledgeable and friendly. And we got to taste three very good whiskies :-) highly recommended if you're interested in whisky.
B P — Google review
One of the best Distillery visits I have done. The Oban Distillery is one of the oldest (legal) distilleries in Scotland and it's size is somewhat constrained by its position right I'm the centre of Oban. Instead of six or even eight stills you might find in some of the massive Speyside distilleries Oban has only two so production is limited. The Distillery visit is well animated by the Distillery staff and, unlike other visits, wee drams are distributed throughout the visit. On a rainy day in Oban this a great way to spend a couple of hours.
Bernard S — Google review
One of the best distilleries I’ve ever been to. The staff knows a great knowledge, also very passionate about their scotch whiskey making. The staff were friendly, very nice and just good all around beautiful people!!! I recommend this to anybody who is going to Scotland. You need to put this on your list of things to do.!!!!!!!!

Perched on Battery Hill, McCaig’s Tower is a striking stone structure built in 1897, featuring an inner garden and offering breathtaking views of Oban Bay. This landmark was commissioned by John Stuart McCaig as both a family monument and a source of employment for local stonemasons. Despite its incomplete state, the tower stands as an iconic feature overlooking the charming town of Oban.
A local historical attraction with great views of Oban, a short walk from the harbour, but it is up a steep hill. A moderate level of fitness is needed, but there is a car park and it's accessible by car. Lots of things to see from here and it is a truly beautiful part of this town. A must see on visiting Oban.
Mark C — Google review
Had a walk to this impressive monument and gardens. Steep climb from Oban Town. We were not blessed with blue skies, but, probably more appropriately very low cloud and drizzle which didn't give us those views which I'm sure would be stunning. Having seen pictures. Undaunted we still enjoyed the experience. I would encourage folk to pay a visit and research how it came to be?
Michael B — Google review
Rather a steep uphill slope but well worth it for the views from the top. Very well maintained garden are within the tower with commanding views across Oban Town and out to sea. Well lit at night too. Small free car park nearby should you wish to drive to visit. No toilets at site. Very pleased we finally made the effort to get to the tower.
John T — Google review
With an easy uphill hike or drive from Oban's town centre, (free parking) with steps or walkway to the entrance) you are presented with Scotland's McCaigs tower on the hill, no lions I am afraid, maybe a pussy cat now and again and no seats, so no lounging around. But do take in the amazingly masterful stone masonry and awe inspiring scenery. You will not be disappointed.
Clint W — Google review
I think this gets sadly missed by some, as they walk the lovely streets and sea front of Oban, but we spotted this from below and took the steep walk up to it, and it was really quite lovey, and worth the walk up to it, if you are in Oban, it’s worth a visit
Darryl O — Google review
Great views of Oban from here. Built in the late 1890s as a means of keeping local masons employed during the winter months. Funded by a local wealthy businessman, John McCaig.
Nick M — Google review
Fantastic viewpoint and historical landmark. On a clear day you can see out past Lismore lighthouse and all across that beautiful area out to Mull. We'll worth the visit plus it costs nothing.

Military Museums
The Oban War & Peace Museum is a small, donation-based museum that offers a fascinating collection of artifacts and photographs depicting the cultural history of the bustling port town. It provides insights into various aspects such as the fishing and maritime industries, railway and road transport, local sports, and the construction of McCaigs Tower. The museum also highlights Oban's strategic significance during wartime, serving as home to Australian, Canadian forces and RAF Flying Boats.
A must visit when in Oban. Museum with free entry which contains a lot of WW2 items, memorabilia and local history. Interesting snap shot of times gone by. Volunteers are welcoming and have a scavenger hunt for children. Please give generously as donations are essential. Lest we forget.
Craig P — Google review
Been wanting to visit since our last trip to Oban a few years ago, and managed to do it today. Very interesting and varied exhibits, most if not all donated to them! Amazing info boards that go with the exhibition. Historical facts and a movie about the local area and history in the back room. The volunteers and staff are very knowledgeable and happy to explain or help in any way. Donations are welcome and encouraged as they don't have other types of funding, and they keep it as free entry.
Alexandra — Google review
Amazing piece of history set in beautiful scenery. Lots of information into the site. Staff in the museum were very friendly and keen to share their knowledge. We had a great time there

Great little museum to visit to learn about war history in Oban and Scotland.
Matt C — Google review
So much history here! Definitely worth a visit for a wee donation. The man on duty was very knowledgable and friendly. A lot to see
Vicky D — Google review
This was a lovely little museum. I’m not really into war stories or war memorabilia I just I’m not into that. However, this was a very nice exhibit, I would love to see more history but the local area apart from the wars which would span other areas and might make more interesting for people like myself who don’t have an interest in wartime items. However, this really gives you an insight into the people of the area and who served and who died in the conflicts in recent times. The staff were excellent and very friendly definitely worth a visit.

This Museum is free, so was not expecting a lot, wow it was full to the brim with 1st and 2nd WW memorabilia, photo's, models and a lot more.. see pics. It's all on one floor so easy to get around, helpful gents on entrance to send you in the right direction 👌

Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds is a must-visit destination located in the picturesque port of Oban Gateway to the Isles. The site offers a rich historical experience with its castle ruins, woodlands, and museum showcasing the heritage of Clan MacDougall. Visitors can explore the beautiful Dunollie Castle overlooking the bay and also enjoy a visit to the world-famous Oban Whisky distillery nearby.
Great value- pay once, come all year round! Museum is interesting- shows some medical marvels of their time on the top floor and some old living quarters downstairs. A steep uphill climb brings you to the ruins of the castle- you can climb up to the first floor if you’re brave- not for me. But the views from the lookout benches are amazing anyway! Theres also a cafe, a play area for kids, a faerie garden with a hammock and mud kitchen and a lovely gift shop too.
Lynsey H — Google review
Very good film about the history of the place and the castle. Nice museum in the old part (1745) of the home of the MacDougall clan chief. A short moderately steep walk up to the castle ruins and lovely panoramic views. Lots of places for kids to play outside and a lovely tea area.
Linda M — Google review
Loved this destination - we explored the castle with a hot beverage (oat chai which was delightful), meandered through gardens, chatted with volunteers, loved the tiny gift shop, and really enjoyed lunch! Worth the stop and could easily spend and enjoy an afternoon here.
Christy J — Google review
Dunollie Castle, the MacDougall ancestral home and museum, is situated on a high point overlooking Loch Linnhe in Oban. The castle is a ruin however, the museum is located in an 18th century building within the grounds. There is also a coffee shop. It was interesting to learn about the MacDougall Clan history, medical background, their enlightened views and charitable works. Well worth a visit. 👍👍👍
D F — Google review
One of my favorite castle I've seen. The person at the stand was sooooo welcoming, so sweet, I adored her. It's nice to know that there's is still a chief of the clan living there and that the way of living of clan's stayed traditional. Very inspiring. The garden was also very beautiful, zen and smelled very good. What I've love is also the history about the little building around, about the maid too, for me Scotland is about the little thing more than the castle and you did point out everything, thank you for being so humble and generous with historical facts.
Audrey M — Google review
We really enjoyed our visit to Dunollie Museum and Castle. I was particularly interested in the MacDougall connection since I have an ancestor who was a MacDougal; she was a very capable, interesting person by all accounts. We appreciate all the friendly, informative conversations we had with the Dunollie staff and were very impressed with the excellent movie about the history of Dunollie. We bought a number of books and copies of the movie for our relatives who will be fascinated with the history and clan information. The view from the castle ruins was spectacular!

Interesting museum, ruins and local history well worth a visit. Absolutely perfect location for a small wedding, or if a couple just want to marry by themselves, no stress, no drama, relaxed at your own pace, which makes it more personal. If you do get married, it's always after the general public leave, so you have the whole place to yourselves.

St. Columba’s Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Oban, Scotland. Built between 1878-1888 and recently renovated, it showcases exquisite stained glass windows designed by leading European artists. The Gothic Revival style building offers stunning views of the bay and features a crypt dating back 1000 years. Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the cathedral replaced an earlier corrugated iron construction known as the 'tin cathedral.'
three Ukrainians were brought to Scotland by boat. We have been getting to know the community of this amazing St. Columba Cathedral for the second day. The biggest answer of our trip to Scotland is above the front door in the form of a picture of Jesus in a storm and the biggest question of daily life - If Jesus is in your boat, why is your faith weak?

A beautiful old cathedral. Went to a mass there. People were very nice and friendly. Definitely a nice place to see if you are in Oban

Large cathedral on the promenade. Has decent historical informal about the place but lacked current information for tourist especially regarding services. Daily mass advertised for 10am but no mass on 2 of the 3 days I was there

Felix D — Google review
A beautiful cathedral with a detailed wood carved stations of the cross. 7 minute walk from the train station.
Norlee F — Google review
It's a strange looking cathedral with a turreted tower rather than traditional spire which gives it a charm all of its own, inside is beautiful, spacious with some gorgeous stained glass and ornamental font and fittings. I'm not a religious guy but I do like the architecture of churchs, cathedrals, mosques, temples, etc
Wullie R — Google review
We went in Cathedral for have a look round after staying at hotel next door. Beautiful building and big. They do a mass.
Jac F — Google review
A very solid looking building is the best I can come up with after seeing St Columbas while walking past , it's very functional and lacks the style that a lot of other cathedrals have but it faces the Atlantic storms head on and sums up the character of the locals very well.

Pulpit Hill Viewpoint is a must-visit spot in Oban, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the ocean, and the surrounding mountains. The viewpoint is located at the top of a steep hill, accessible via a short walk from Oban town center. At the summit, visitors can admire an old compass monument that indicates various points of interest and their respective distances. It's an ideal location for both daytime sightseeing and capturing stunning photos on clear days.
It's a great view of the whole of Oban! However for Google maps directions with a car put in for (summit home cottage). You can walk from the waterfront up to the view
Alyssa W — Google review
Beautiful views of the city. You have a 180° view and you'll can see not only the dock area but also the sea and some Isles.
Antonio C — Google review
- Some of the view is obstructed by bushes, but it’s a good “value for effort” viewpoint, i.e. it offers a pretty decent view for the amount of effort you need to put in climbing there. - It’s pretty close to central Oban (10-15min walk). - The view is different to that seen from McCaig tower. - It’s at a public park so it’s free to enter. - Not too many other people there at the time we visited.
Lil T — Google review
Steep walk but nice and quiet with beautiful views. Google Maps showed a trail up the mountainside but staying on the road was much more manageable. Or take the bus up.
Joan C — Google review
Great views across Oban and the islands, and the walk up wasn't too bad at all - a wee bit steep but over quite quick!

This is quite a hike. This is not for the faint heart, even though some of the sign says moderate it is actually quite a steep climb, and some people may take this on that are not capable of it. We are well used to climbing, we found this Tough, not really a struggle, but definitely one that gets the heart pumping. However, it was very well worth it. The views from the top of very stunning. A 360 view in all directions definitely bring a camera, a really good place to come if you feel you can do a climb.

Atlantis Leisure is a must-visit spot in Oban, perfect for families and individuals looking to unwind and have fun. This vibrant leisure center boasts an array of attractions, including a soft play area that delights younger visitors, a rock climbing wall for the adventurous, and swimming pools suitable for all ages. The facilities are well-maintained, ensuring a pleasant experience whether you're splashing around in the baby pool or hitting the gym.
Staying at the nearby holiday park and came here with our 7 month old for aqua tots 'class' which is not teacher led but lots of fun toys added to the pool for play. The small pool is a nice temperature and could stay in it quite comfortably for 30 minutes with our baby. Reasonable prices. Staff friendly. It was like being transported back to the 90s with the decor but the place does look well kept. The only complaint I have is that with the baby changing room, there is actually a security camera that can look right in. It would maybe be beneficial to have a little partition Infront of the changing room so it still covers the corridor outside but the room cannot be looked into.
Louise B — Google review
Friendly staff, facilities quite old but the changing rooms are very clean and tidy. The water in the kids pool is warm. The playground is wonderful!

We were a family visiting the area in the school summer holidays, we came here twice for swimming, so much fun! Loads of floats/balls etc out to play with, fun atmosphere in the pool with lots of smiles and playing. My kids loved it. Fantastic flume! Better than our local 'Scottish town' pool anyday! Friendly staff too.
Emma B — Google review
Have been several times for swimming, the gentle slide is open a fair bit and 1 lane usually has been reserved for people who like to do lengths. There is a small kids pool with a fairly steep slide. Their is also a fantastic multistory soft play area for young kids to enjoy right next to the cafeteria area which sells pizzas 🍕 outdoor wise they have a couple of 5 a side pitches alongside tennis court and another play area. Park in the back carpark where you can get 2 hours free parking 🅿️ rather than the closer parking areas

Historical landmark
The Dog Stone is a remarkable natural formation located near the town center, with a history dating back around 415 million years. Once a massive sea stack, it now appears to emerge from the land with trees growing on its summit. According to myths, this is where Fingal the Giant tied his dog Bran, and the narrow base of the stone was supposedly carved by Bran's attempts to free himself.
Great sights along the walk ! Nice forested trail from Dunollie castle back into Oban. Goes right past the dog stone.
Stephen S — Google review
This particularly massive lump of sedimentary rock appears as though it is an erratic placed here by the ice age but is in fact a natural formation. Mad to think that it was once the beach. It stands alone at about 25m tall and has trees growing at the top. There is a mythical tale of someone tying a dog here which is totally irrelevant. It is an obscure thing to go look at and not worth the trouble unless you happen to be passing by. Also no parking nearby so dont try and stop. Largely uninteresting unless your a geologist.
Andy L — Google review
This is an attraction which is free to watch our lookout. But at the end of the day, they simply a large stone situation in the field. It’s quite large. A lot larger than I thought, but that’s it.
Shane M — Google review
The surrounding scenery is beautiful, however this is literally just a giant stone. It's amazing that there's trees growing out of the top of it actually but other than that, not that interesting. Wouldn't bother with it unless you're heading that way anyway
Vicky D — Google review
A nice short walk from Oban center to the castle along the coast, with beautiful views. Info material explain how the Dog Syone got its name.
Paul G — Google review
Clach a' choin or the Dog's stone.Close by Dunollie point, this large glacial boulder was where the legendary giant Fingal supposedly tied up his dog Bran while throwing boulders across the water to his cousin in the North of Ireland or while hunting or something. Anyway Bran being a restless sort of giant dog wore away the bottom of the stone by straining on his chain while waiting for Fingal to come back. Have a glance if you are visiting nearby Dunollie castle.

amazing view from this monument, when you are there, do not go back to Oban, but have a walk round the Kerrera island. Enjoy quiet place, watch otters and seals, meet sheep an #Scottish coo, feel that magic place

Superb views from here, well worth the walk , especially as there was a cruise ship birthed and tenders sailing back and fore!!!
Evelyn U — Google review
It's a monument with great views out into the bay. But nothing more than that. Good as visual waypoint while you walk around the island.

St John's Scottish Episcopal Cathedral in Oban is a captivating blend of old and new architecture, with its original mid-19th century structure partially extended using modern steelwork. The cathedral exudes an elegant Gothic Revival style, showcasing intricate design and craftsmanship. Despite being incomplete for over a century, the cathedral emanates charm and tranquility, offering a spiritual haven for visitors. It also serves as a venue for various events such as choir performances and music festivals.
What a beautiful place to sing in. It was a venue for Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail in Oban. Great acoustics in a stunning Church.

Tea and cakes in Oban, this is the place to go to. Just make a donation for your drinks etc, excellent.

This is an extraordinary building: it is still incomplete after 100 years, but it has charm and atmosphere - and is replete with interesting items. What a unique cathedral!
David B — Google review
Fascinating and very peaceful. A work in progress, but enough is finished to give a vision of the final objective.

The boat trip agency Allan's Boat Trips is a great way to see seals, salmon farms and the coastline of Isle of Mull. The tour is only one hour long, but it is more interesting than the Loch Ness tour.
We were on a coach trip, arrived 10 mn before the boat left and made a quick decision to go on it. We ve not regretted it as it was an amazing day, sunny and flat seas. The guide is very entertaining and we ve seen some seals. The landscape around Oban is very nice. Nothing compares to a sunny day in Scotland. The trip is reasonably priced too. For some really strange reason the review was not published the first time I tried

Booked onto the 12.30 boat for today. Glad we did and recommend to folks visiting to give it a go. Lovely, friendly family business and Allan's daughter made the trip more enjoyable with her knowledge (sometimes witty) of the area and wildlife we saw on the trip. And not to forget Allan's other daughter who was as the pier ready to greet us for the boat coming to pick us up. Thank you again😊

Day trip to Oban, first time. We had booked without seeing the long steps to the boat and the two gentleman could not have been nicer helping her on and getting her back up the stairs. We saw seals, got a history lesson and even saw the Isle of Mull from a distance. Our tour guide was witty and factual. Would absolutely recommend. Note: 35 mins is not enough time to find a free small car park close (if you have difficulty walking).

Had a really nice boat trip the other week. We did the one hour wildlife tour and saw loads of seals, even some babies! Was such a lovely trip and Allan was very knowledgable and friendly. Very reasonable price as well for a full hour!

Lovely tour, very suitable for children as well. We had a great time.

I went on the one hour nature trip and we managed to find a huge number of seals on the various skerries around Kerrera and off Lismore. We also saw a variety of bird life including geese ducks and cormorants. A very enjoyable way to spend an hour.

Experienced the 1 hour tour. Recommended. Was a great and fun journey

We had a very enjoyable hour boat ride around the shores of Oban with Allan’s Tours. The family made it informative and friendly. Great view of the seals. Would highly recommend. Good value for the money.
