Nestled amidst the charming cobblestone streets of Ljubljana, the National and University Library stands as a testament to architectural brilliance, designed by the renowned Joze Plecnik. Completed in 1941, this striking building draws inspiration from Italian palazzos and echoes the grandeur of the former Auersperg Palace that once occupied its site. With its impressive orange and white façade, adorned with symbolic windows resembling open books, visitors are greeted by a monumental dark marble staircase upon entering.
I use it as a Study place, so I'm reviewing it as such. The atmosphere is chill and classy, really motivating. You have plenty of tables to choose from, all provided with outlets; Free WiFi, and vending machines for coffee and snacks. You often find other people studying and working there. To reach it you need to enter the building and go left downstairs.
Riccardo O — Google review
Home to both the National Library and the University of Ljubljana Library, this is Slovenia’s most important library and one of Jože Plečnik’s architectural masterpieces, carrying profound architectural and cultural symbolism. Constructed between 1930 and 1941, it combines Modernism, Classicism, and Slovenian folk motifs. The entire structure was conceived as a sanctuary of knowledge, designed to express a spiritual ascent toward enlightenment. Its striking façade—made of red brick and grey stone—evokes a sense of solidity and the weight of knowledge, while the windows resemble open books, symbolizing the act of learning.
Seokjin H — Google review
Worth a visit, it's a unique place, the architecture is stunning. It's free during weekdays but the main hall is closed as there are people studying inside. On Saturday the entrance is 5€ and the main hall is open for visits. Honestly I would recommend a free visit cause the rest of the library is still impressive.
Francesca A — Google review
This is a beautiful place, the National Library should have such a magnificent building, as well as a wealth of books, so that a society to progress.
Anna — Google review
Definitely a curious place to see as it houses both National and University Libraries.Ironically the only book in the main hall was the travel guide brought by me. 5 EUR admission is a little overpriced considering the scale of exibition and hall, but still work taking a peek if you are cusrious about local history.
V I — Google review
Are you sure I have to pay €5 for entry? There’s really nothing to see there. And rude staff
Shakh B — Google review
This library is a very important cultural and architectural item of Slovenian history and it's an actual library that still works and I used it today cause I needed quiet time for reading today.

Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
Dragon Bridge, also known as Zmajski Most, is a pedestrian-friendly art nouveau bridge in Ljubljana, built in 1900. It is famous for its series of dragon statues that guard either side of the bridge and smaller griffins adorning its lamp posts. The bridge spans the Ljublanica river and is a popular spot for tourists to take photos due to its remarkable dragon sculptures modeled after the city's coat of arms.
We loved visiting Ljubljana and seeing the Dragon Bridge. Such a wide variety of things to do and see. Highly recommend the City Hotel and we enjoyed dining at Most restaurant.
Steve F — Google review
Ljubljana's Dragon Bridge in Slovenia is an iconic representation of Art Nouveau architecture, drawing visitors from far and wide. The bridge's four imposing dragon statues, one at each corner, command attention. Strategically located in Ljubljana's historic center, the bridge crosses the Ljubljanica River, facilitating social exchange. Fascinating local myths surround the bridge and its dragons, such as the story that the dragons acknowledge a virgin's crossing with a subtle movement. The concrete bridge has earned the colloquial nickname 'mother-in-law' from some locals, who find the dragons' fiery demeanor both captivating and intimidating. The Dragon Bridge, a masterpiece designed by Slovenian Jurij Zaninovic, stands as a testament to the city's resilience. This stunning Art Nouveau bridge was dedicated to the 40th anniversary of Hapsburg Emperor Franz Josef's reign, with the dates 1848-1888 elegantly inscribed on its side. A symbol of hope and renewal, the bridge honors the emperor's contributions to the city's revitalization after the devastating 1895 earthquake. Conveniently located, the bridge is within walking distance of iconic landmarks like Ljubljana Cathedral, Ljubljana Castle, and the vibrant Ljubljana Central Market.
C K — Google review
The Dragon Bridge in Ljubljana is one of the city's most iconic landmarks, symbolizing Ljubljana's identity. It is located in Ljubljana's city center over the Ljubljanica River. The bridge is famous for its four large bronze dragon statues—two at each end—and sixteen smaller dragons decorating the bridge's span.
Kevin A — Google review
Nothing too special on its own, but the dragon statues are iconic and symbolic to Ljubljana. Definitely worth a quick stop and a photo if you’re exploring the city.
J — Google review
Impressive dragons decorate this Art Nouveau bridge that was built between 1900 and 1901 and the first with a reinforced concrete structure in town. The story goes that the dragons are tied to the Greek myth of Jason and the Argonauts, who are said to have founded Ljubljana and slain a dragon nearby.
Seimen B — Google review
It's a bridge with Dragons on it. We counted at least 20. Good place for a photo. Some people may say its crowded but I'd say it has atmosphere with people stopping to take photographs or passing by as they head to the nearby cafes and restaurants.
Bhoy 6 — Google review
It’s one of the iconic landmark of the city of Ljubljana, you’ll see many souvenir shops selling dragon theme fridge magnets based on the dragon statues on all 4 corners of this bridge.
Subhash S — Google review
Nice bridge for short walk to other side of river in the Old Town of Ljubljana. Can also be seen from the river on a boat excursion. The internet can tell you about how the dragon came to be seen as protector of the city

Neboticnik - Skyscraper is a historic high-rise building in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Constructed in 1933, it was one of the tallest buildings in Europe at that time and boasts architectural significance from the interwar period. The building houses shops, offices, private flats, and a renowned restaurant with a roof terrace called Neboticnik Cafe. This cafe offers stunning panoramic views of Ljubljana from its vantage point atop the skyscraper.
Great place for cozy drinks with a view you won’t forget. From the terrace you can see the whole old city and the Ljubljana Castle right in front of you. Perfect spot to sip a drink during sunset or at night when the city lights up. The atmosphere is calm and elegant, and the staff are super friendly and welcoming. A must-visit when in Ljubljana.
Despina L — Google review
Views upon sunset are worth it. Service is fast and amicable. The building has important history. BUT the 12th floor could be in much better condition. Glasses are stained, smell (inside) is disgusting and furniture could be better. Still, recommendable.
Mauricio M — Google review
The view could be great but at this moment there will be a huge crane in the middle of your photograph of the castle with below the old city. On the bright side service of my wine was fast and wine was very drinkable At the elevator at the ground floor there is now a sign “no free pictures only when you order drinks or food”.
Annelie H — Google review
Nice rooftop bar to watch the sunset, with great views of the city. Staff were nice and helpful. Service was a little slow when we visited, but this was most likely due to the time of day, as it was very busy. We were lucky to get a table, a party was departing as we arrived. My first choice of drink was unavailable as a key ingredient was missing, but there were plenty of other delicious drinks to choose from.😋 My only suggestion to the owners/staff would be to clean the glass/Perspex surrounding the perimeter walls of the roof terrace as they are dirty, and spoil photos if you are unable to rise/hold camera above it to take great photos. It's definitely worth a visit!
A B — Google review
From the outside the building is just a square block. But the spiral staircase inside is very interesting. You can only walk up to the 10th floor. To go to restaurant and terrace on 10, 11, 12th floor, can only take the elevator. View from the terrace certainly is gorgeous.
Connie W — Google review
The view was good, if you want to visit the skyscraper and take pictures is ok if you order from the bar in the last floor from what we understand. The drink i ordered was nothing special but i recommend to go for the view 🏙

1 | Nebotičnik is a historic 70-metre-tall high-rise in the heart of Ljubljana, completed in 1933 and once one of the tallest buildings in Europe. Its top-floor café and viewing terrace offer panoramic views over the city, the rooftops, and the nearby hills, accessible via its original Art Deco elevator. 2 | I was surprised that the "skyscraper" wasn’t as tall as I expected. It’s actually pretty easy to miss from the street — for reference, it’s located right next to the Cyanometer attraction. 3 | On the rooftop, there’s a café with a stunning view of the entire area. The tables are set on an outdoor terrace that offers a full 360° panorama. You can visit without paying an entrance fee — you just need to order something at the café. 4 | Prices at the café were surprisingly reasonable (as of July 2025). An espresso costs 2.70 euros, a cappuccino is 3.10 euros, and a Union beer is 4.70 euros. They also serve toast and sandwiches. 5 | Card payment is accepted. What disappointed me was the very slow service — we were ignored for several minutes. 6 | The interior of the skyscraper reflects the era it was built in, with no major renovations. Worth noting are the vintage elevator and the spiral staircase located on the ground floor right next to it. 7 | I recommend visiting the rooftop café at sunset. It can get crowded, but the view is unforgettable. On a clear day, you can see the mountains beyond the city from Nebotičnik.
Petr N — Google review
An ok location but with some problems: -Dirty windows blocking the view, sitting in this restaurant doesnt matter becouse you cant see the view anyway becouse of the dirtyness. -Prices are high. -Customer service just stands in a group and talks, doesnt really look like they wanna help you at all. -But the worst of all, our drink had alot of Ice, it was almost no drink at all. Will not return here...

Ljubljana Castle, a medieval fortress towering over the townhouses below, offers a captivating journey through history and culture. Visitors can ascend to the castle via a glass cube and explore its first-rate museums, including the Virtual Castle showcasing its development, an exhibition on Slovene history with insights into socialist Yugoslavia and the Ten-Day War, and the Museum of Puppetry. The stocky Clock Tower provides unparalleled views of the old town and distant Kamniske Alps.
Go as easily as possible to skip the crowds. We bought tickets at the entrance and arrive at 9:30am to no queues or crowds. Great views of the city. The history is castle is available in multiple languages across the various rooms. Definitely a good place to visit.
Petra P — Google review
Great castle experience! The funicular ride up is convenient and fun. Lots to explore once you’re there, with something for everyone. The puppet museum was a fantastic surprise - definitely don’t miss it. Highly recommended! The view from the clock tower is amazing.
Giacomo B — Google review
I'm disappointed. It's not worth the 15 euros. The only thing you have to pay for is to climb the flag tower. All the exhibition halls contain mostly textual information that can be found on Wikipedia. So, essentially, you can come here for free, stroll around the castle square without a ticket, and enjoy the tour. The castle grounds are also beautiful. I recommend walking up the hill instead of taking the funicular. It's a good workout! And be prepared to pay for the restrooms, even if you have a ticket. Overall, it's worth a visit, but without buying a ticket.
Roman B — Google review
The history of a fortess on this site go back to the 11th century but the castle that stands here today was built under Frederick III of Habsburg as a stronghold against the Ottoman Empire. The beautiful decorated St George's Chapel dates from this time. It was extensively renovated over decades using lots of concrete as you can see all around. There is not much to be seen of the old csstle. Left and right were some interesting details like the old prison and the small armoury. When you climb the tower via the double red winding stairs you get a nice view over the city. Entry to the castle is easiest with the funicular which is included in the ticket price.
Seimen B — Google review
Easy to get to ...funicular is a 1 minute ride. Castle is now theater. galleries, museum, restaurant plus the castle itself with nice viewing tower. Area of improvement is the signage. As the signs were not clear I just couldn't find the puppet museum which was the main reason of my visit.
John C — Google review
there’s a great view from the top and walking up there doesn’t take a lot of time and it’s not that hard. the place could be pretty crowded but you can always take a walk around the surroundings and enjoy the nature. be careful if you walk down though! it’s very steep
Hamy N — Google review
Nice castle and grounds. The views from the tower are phenomenal! I highly recommend buying ticket online so you can get a 10% discount instead of buying at the castle. There's no timed entry so you can buy the tickets just before you go. We walked up hill, didn't use the funicular going up or down. I got the basic ticket that included the museum of puppetry, art exhibition, video mapping (immersion impressionist art), and the 3D movie about the castle. The only part I disliked that they charge to use the toilets, which was a bit much. You already pay for the ticket so why should you pay to use the restroom, just include the price in the ticket.
Amy P — Google review
A visit to Ljubljana isn't complete without a visit to the castle overlooking the city. We chose to walk up the hill from the South side, a path that takes you through some lovely viewing points and charming, narrow alleys. We'd highly recommend this scenic route, but if the walk is challenging, there's also a funicular that whisks you up the hill. The castle itself, with the exception of the tower, wasn't quite what I expected. Much of it has been renovated in a modern style, and the central courtyard felt rather busy and hectic. However, the panoramic views from the castle over the city are absolutely worth the climb! You can descend back into the city via a path to the North, which brings you out near the puppet theatre, or simply take the funicular back down.

Government Buildings
Located in the heart of Ljubljana's Old Town, the Town Hall is a grand building with a rich history dating back to 1484. The Late Gothic structure underwent significant changes and was restored to its Venetian Baroque design in the 1960s. Visitors can admire the art exhibition space and explore the courtyard featuring a charming fountain. Adjacent to the Robba Fountain on Town Square, this historic monument offers guided tours for an immersive experience.
An ancient governmental building with the ground floor open to the public revieling many historical moments. There are also 3 exhibitions spaces that are always occupied by various artists and projects. And at the entrance to the right you can see all the prizes Ljubljana received for various achievements

The Rathaus (Town Hall) in Ljubljana is a stunning building, and we had the chance to visit it during our city tour. Our guide gave us a fascinating rundown of its history, which made the experience much more meaningful. Located in the Old Town, the Renaissance-style facade with touches of Gothic and Baroque design really stands out. The surrounding town square adds to the charm, making it a perfect spot to take in the local atmosphere. Inside, there are some exhibits that offer a glimpse into the city's past, though the real highlight was learning about the history from our guide. The building itself is beautiful and rich in stories, making it a great stop to really connect with Ljubljana’s heritage.
K E — Google review
Originally built in the 15th century, the building was later remodeled in the 18th century in a Baroque-Renaissance style. It still serves as the seat of the Mayor of Ljubljana and houses the city's administrative offices. Inside, you'll also find a small exhibition gallery and a wedding hall open to the public.
Seokjin H — Google review
The town hall is a beautiful building you'll access by taking the pedestrian street right after the triple bridge coming from Preseren Square. When you'll get inside you'll se this beautiful indoor court. There was also an exhibition when we were there.
Dan M — Google review
Its main government building of the city. Beautiful walking around to see the heart of the old town.

1 | Mestna hiša (Ljubljana Town Hall) was originally built in the late 15th century and received its Baroque makeover between 1717–1719 under the direction of Gregor Maček Sr. based on designs by the Italian architect Carlo Martinuzzi. 2 | The building houses municipal offices and several spaces dedicated to art exhibitions. The exhibits change regularly. During our visit in July 2025, there was an exhibition focused on summer vacations, visually styled to resemble Instagram. 3 | The building is also architecturally interesting, with Robba’s Narcissus fountain located in its courtyard, surrounded by arcaded walkways.
Petr N — Google review
Not many town halls in the world allow you to go in without searching your bags. I felt like visiting a museum instead. Using painted water bottles instead of baubles is such a powerful recycling message. Well done.

Ljubljana's outdoor market, also known as the Central Market, is a vibrant and historic marketplace located in the heart of the city. It's a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Ljubljana, offering a wide variety of fresh produce, local specialties, and artisanal goods.

A Lively Market – Perfect for a Morning Stroll Ljubljana’s Central Market is a vibrant and colorful spot, ideal for a morning walk. You’ll find a lovely selection of fresh produce, mainly fruits and vegetables, along with clothing and accessories, as you’d expect from a traditional open-air market. Beautifully located at the foot of the castle, the market makes for a very pleasant stroll. It’s easy to combine your visit with a stop at the Dragon Bridge, or even to leave a love lock on the Butcher’s Bridge, a romantic local tradition. Beyond the usual stalls, the market also features artisan and tourist products, such as magnets, t-shirts, and handmade souvenirs. There’s also a wide range of food stalls, ideal for tasting Slovenian dishes or grabbing a quick bite. 👉 A must-see spot to soak up the local atmosphere in a charming setting full of flavors, culture, and life.
Axelle C — Google review
It is biggest old market in old center of Ljubljana. It is also historical landmark, work of famous architect Jože Plečnik in years between 1931 and 1939. This place has long and rich history. Anyway, people meet here every day for buying vegetables, fruits, meat, fish and other food, for lunch and other public events. You can buy fresh vegetables and fruit from local farmers in Slovenia. What is special about this place is that it didn't change so much in all this time and it stays legendary as it always was. It is Slovenian culture monunent and still serves for everyday market. During the summer there is also opportunity for free dance events with course. If you are here today, you have luck because you see old legendary market. The mayor wants to renovate it and consequently some legendary things will be lost...

The Central Market in Ljubljana is a must-visit for anyone interested in experiencing the local culture and cuisine. This vibrant market is located in the heart of the city, and it is open every day from morning to evening. The market is divided into two main areas: the covered market and the open-air market. The covered market is home to a variety of stalls selling fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and other produce. The open-air market is a bit more eclectic, and you can find everything from souvenirs to flowers to street food here. One of the best things about the Central Market is the friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The vendors are always happy to chat with customers, and they are always willing to give recommendations. You can also find some great bargains at the market, especially if you are willing to haggle. In addition to fresh produce, the Central Market is also a great place to find traditional Slovenian food. There are several stalls selling sausages, cured meats, and other delicacies. You can also find freshly baked bread, pastries, and cakes. If you are looking for a unique and authentic experience in Ljubljana, then the Central Market is a must-visit. It is a great place to wander around, people-watch, and sample some of the local food. Here are some specific things that I liked about the Central Market: * The fresh produce was of excellent quality and very reasonably priced. * The vendors were friendly and helpful. * There was a wide variety of products to choose from, including fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, cheeses, breads, pastries, and souvenirs. * The market was clean and well-organized. * It was a great place to people-watch and experience the local culture. Overall, I had a very positive experience at the Central Market in Ljubljana. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city.

This is a place where time stands still. Local farmer’s market blended with a flee market and a regular shopping mall. Ljubljana does not disappoint with their market square. From new shoes to cabbage, you will probably find it here. I stopped by on a lazy winter Friday after exploring the nearby Ljubljana Castle.

The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, a 17th-century landmark in Ljubljana, is known for its striking pink facade and ornate interior adorned with ceiling frescoes. Situated on Preseren Square near the Ljubljanica river, this grand Baroque church stands out with its salmon-pink exterior and two bell towers. It competes for attention with other iconic sights like Zmajski Most and the Triple Bridge.
It is a beautiful church, the color so vibrant, making a statement at the center on Ljubljana, any house of worship is always highly recommended!

The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation in Ljubljana is a stunning pink landmark in Prešeren Square. Its Baroque interior features beautiful frescoes, a grand altar, and a peaceful atmosphere. The church’s library, with rare books, is accessible after buying a ticket. It’s a quick visit, about 15-30 minutes, perfect for soaking in history and art.
Ramdas P — Google review
One of the two most remarkable churces in the capital. The church is entered through the monastery to the left of it. You need to pay for a visit. Nice baroque interior with not so nice post baroque frescoes. You can buy the combined ticket also for a small museum which is a bit hard to find. You need to go through the courtyard, ring the bell and go to the first floor - not a good navigation! This museum is very small but you can see some remarkable paintings and renovated francsican library.

Beautiful and iconic church in the very heart of Ljubljana. The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation with its striking red façade is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. The interior is peaceful and elegant, with beautiful frescoes and a serene atmosphere. Located right on Prešeren Square, it’s easy to visit while exploring the old town. A must-see spot for anyone visiting Ljubljana — perfect for photos and a quiet moment of reflection.

The beautiful, Baroque salmon-colored Church of the Annunciation is the Franciscan church in Ljubljana, built in 1646. Located on Central Prešeren Square, it is attached to a 13th century monastery.

Beautiful pink church which is an outcome of the fading of the originally red paint, interesting. There’s an entrance fee and the to enter you have to go to the left side of the main entrance, there’s a door.
J — Google review
I was here on Christmas Eve and it has a wonderful Nativity scene inside at the altar. It is so detailed and sophisticated, it has so many little figures! The scene even has a little fountain and a bonfire in it. I loved that the church was so welcoming, there were a lot of children around the scene with parents teaching them on the meaning of it. That's what the Christmas is all about! To compare: another church in the nearby - the Saint Nicholas church - at the same Christmas Eve was so unfriendly, there was a festive service with the organ but the church was empty because the doors were closed and they put a sign for tourists to stay away. This Franciscan church was not like that and I'm grateful for their warm hospitality!
Oksana A — Google review
The Franciscan Church is hard to miss, with its stunning pink façade that stands out from various angles across Prešeren Square. It’s one of the most iconic buildings in Ljubljana and offers a beautiful mix of Baroque architecture and a peaceful atmosphere. Even if you’re not religious, the interior is worth stepping into, with its impressive artwork and serene vibe. I found it to be a great spot to pause during my day of exploring. It's not overly crowded, and the soft light coming through the stained glass windows gives it a calming feel. There's also a small shop where you can purchase religious items, adding a little extra to the experience. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful moment or just admiring the building’s beauty, it’s a lovely place to visit.

Plečnik House, located in the southern part of Ljubljana, is a complex of two neighboring houses and an adjacent garden that once belonged to the renowned architect Jože Plečnik. The house now hosts the Plečnik Collection, showcasing the architect's original furniture, library, drawing tools, personal belongings, and a vast archive of sketches, plans, photographs, and models.
I love the way the guide explained his major life points. Very peaceful atmosphere specially the garden. We waited there more than an hour during a hot day. There were letter reading , they served delicious drinks and snacks for the people who were around. Worth to visit place. Staff is very friendly and helpful

This was such A great experience. We were very lucky to arrive at a good time. We had a wonderful tour guide, which now I forget his name, but he was so sympathetic, very knowledgeable, and great insights and story telling. I highly recommend doing the house tour. :)

The tour guides are excellent and provide an interesting 45 min tour of this great Slovian’s house as he left it when he died in the 1950’s. As he worked with those in power (except the facists) his living quarters remained in tact during communism. Cheap price for the tour overall. Well worth it for the man who left the biggest architectural imprint on Ljubljana.
Dany G — Google review
A really interesting guided tour about Plečnik and the home that he built up. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and really gave a sense of what inspired Plečnik and how he lived. Much of the house has been preserved with the furniture, items and fittings that they possessed when Plečnik died in 1957. There’s lots of fascinating period details to see and examine and the house itself is very interesting architecturally as well with a huge garden (with even more classical artefacts) to explore. Well worth 9 Euros!

Would highly recommend booking the tour online in advance if, like me, you admire his architecture but don't actually know a lot about him. The house and guide was very informative and much better than if you only went into the free exhibits (although they were very detailed). We went on a rainy day. Really enjoyed how the guide left us to explore in each room and take photos (without flash). Learnt a lot and appreciated the architecture of the city even more after visiting.

It is such a pleasure to share my experience about this great place and people who run it. The museum is full of original and well kept things having belonged to Jože Plečnik, and all of that provides a wonderful insight into a way of life and personal philosophy of the most important Slovenian and one of the most appreciated Europian architects. A visitor is able to choose between regular visit and a guided tour with just a few euros price difference. I chose the guided tour and I have to say all the best about Tea, our guide. She is approachable, full of information and she knows very well how to present them in an interesting way. The tour is guided both in Slovenian and English successively. You don’t need to have a previous knowledge either about architecture, or about Plečnik personally, but in my opinion, it is recommendable to gain at least few basic information, which is quite easy in the era of google. The regular price of guided tour is 9 euros, and I know there is a discount for students and elderly people. I highly recommend visiting this wonderful little world of the great artist and exceptional human being.

I recommend a visit with a guide, during the tour she introduced you to Plečnik's life and many interesting facts. Pleasant visit, the museum environment is nice. The guide spoke clear English, she responded promptly to all our questions.

This museum is really interesting to see, especially if you have somehow interest into architecture. It was definitely eye opening to learn about the life of Plecnik and how he contributed to the architectural structure of the city of Ljubjana. It was also great that you can see the house via a hourly guided tour that is done max with 7 people. When you consider this, the price for the museum was really fair.

Križanke, a former 13th-century Teutonic monastery in Ljubljana, has been transformed into a major cultural venue by architect Joze Plecnik. The complex features an open-air theater with a capacity for 1,400 spectators and an early 18th-century church designed by Domenico Rossi. It is the key setting for the city's summer festival of music and dance, hosting ballet performances and the International Fine Arts Colony.
The ćevapčići, schnitzel, beef soup, and Shopska salad were very tasty, and the baklava for dessert was absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, my soup was almost forgotten and only brought at the very end, when my friends had already finished eating. However, the kind waitress made sure it was not included in the bill, which we really appreciated, and we thanked her for this thoughtful gesture. Overall, the price and quality are very fair. In the evenings people usually wait in line to get into this wonderful café — but it’s definitely worth it.

You will see nothing unless you come to the concert 1 hour in advance to get the front rows, because the viewing levels are 10 cm high. The concert hall has not been remodeled for modern concerts and drinking in the venue is not allowed. I paid 60 EUR for the ticket and I couldn't see the stage from any part. The Ursuline Church of the Holy Trinity is a stunning Baroque church built in the 1700s, located in Slovenia. Designed by architect Carlo Martinuzzi, it features a unique facade and a magnificent baroque interior with an exquisite high altar crafted from African marble by Francesco Robba. The original bell tower was replaced after an earthquake in 1895. In addition to its architectural beauty, the church is also known for the famous Dance of Death fresco on its south wall.

Nestled in the heart of Ljubljana, the Hauptmann House stands as a remarkable testament to Viennese Art Nouveau architecture. This charming structure, which survived the devastating 1895 earthquake, was transformed in 1904 by its owner Adolf Hauptmann into a stunning example of secession style. With its vibrant green, blue, and red patterns adorning the facade, it draws comparisons to New York's Flat Iron building while maintaining its unique character.

(Translated by Google) Hauptmann House, Ljubljana If you find yourself in the historic center of Ljubljana, on the pedestrianized Prešeren square, you cannot fail to enjoy this special building, which also has an interesting history. Located on the corner of Wolfova ulica and Prešernov trg, it is called "Hauptmann's House" after its owner, Adolf Hauptmann, a local paint merchant. But because of its proportions, the great height compared to the width, it was also given the nickname "the little skyscraper". It was built in 1873 on the site of a former tavern, which had already existed there since 1600. It was one of the few houses in Ljubljana that was not destroyed by the earthquake of 1895, thus confirming the good quality of its construction. In 1904 the building was renovated by the owner Hauptmann, who commissioned the architect Ciril Metod Koch to redesign the facade and roof in the style of the modern Viennese Secession. The Vienna Secession, also known as the Union of Austrian Artists is an art movement, closely related to Art Nouveau, formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian painters, graphic designers, sculptors and architects. The five-storey corner building received an impressive facade decorated with geometric patterns of ceramic tiles in shades of green, blue and red, along with a projecting roof. In addition, captivating curved geometric sculptures were placed at the corners of the building on the first floor. In general, the Hauptmann House converses harmoniously with the other ornate structures on Prešeren Square. The Žale Cemetery, located a short distance outside the city center, features an impressive colonnaded arch and eclectic chapels designed by architect Jože Plečnik. Known for his fusion of classical, Byzantine, and Far Eastern styles, Plečnik's approach is evident in the various headstones and chapels scattered throughout the cemetery. The site also boasts beautiful flora such as topiary, flowerbeds, and slender conifers which add to its grandiosity.
Sorry Rome, another cemetery has stolen my heart and it’s in Ljubljana. Plečnik may very well be my favourite architect of all time but strangely the Plečnik parts of this cemetery are not the most interesting. Sure, the Brandenburg Gate-style entrance piece is fantastic but it was closed off for me so it felt like I missed the ceremony. Section D is done by another Slovene architect Marko Mušič and it’s an impressive homage to Plečnik. Somehow, Mušič makes his section of the cemetery feel like the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and also Ancient Egypt at the same time. The inverted pyramids on stilts semiotically tell you where the car park is, where the entrance to the cemetery areas are. The bins are not visible to the naked teary eye. The height of the walls gives privacy to mourners. On the outskirts, there are some gorgeous structures that are surrounded by greenery, giving Storm King Arts Centre vibes. Marvellous. (Even the benches are memorable!) That’s not to take away from Sections A, B and C which on their own are fairly stunning. Of the ones marked on Google Maps, don’t miss Spomenik internirancem, Spokmenik žrtvam dachauskih procesov, Park zvončkov and Kostnica žrtev. It’s art that feels like it shouldn’t be in a cemetery. Without a doubt, this is the short walk away from the rest of the city.

SNG Opera in balet Ljubljana has a rich history dating back to the 18th century, with its current Neo-Renaissance building being a prominent landmark in Slovenia. Originally a provincial theater, it now hosts a diverse program of classic and modern operas, ballets, and concerts. The opera house expanded in 1918 to include opera and ballet ensembles as well as an orchestra, gaining international recognition post-World War II.

It is strange and weird that the cafeteria where people go to enjoy a drink at the usual break, don't accept cards (bank or credit cards - only cash!! Really? In 2024!! We, foreigners, were not informed about that, and that was the ONLY bad thing about the Opera House of Ljubljana. Recommended to the max.

went to see the nutcracker and was there 45 minutes before and the main entrance wasn't open yet (it opened 40 minutes before the show, entrance to the venue opens 20 minutes before the show, so don't come too early). the lobby is quite small and the whole venue is divided into stalls, boxes/lodges and gallery. the enterior is in parts in a bad condition, so refurbishing is highly needed. the views are good wherever your seat is (I sat in the first row, where you can see the show and the orchestra playing). there are lots of toilets on each floor (most busy ones are in the basement) and croupiers will gladly help you with seating. I didn't like the fact that there is a net between the stage and the audience. the performance itself was nice and at a high level.
Tadej S — Google review
I saw a performance of Werther and it was ok, but there was quite a lot of talking and noise in the audience. I had a seat on the balcony I felt very close and well connected to the scene.

This is Slovenia’s premier opera and ballet theatre, serving as a central hub for classical performing arts in Ljubljana and a symbolic cultural landmark. It is housed in the Deželno gledališče, a Neo-Renaissance building constructed in 1892. In 2011, the theatre underwent a major renovation, which added state-of-the-art stage facilities while preserving its historic charm.

Although it has a slightly strange colour, it is still a beautiful building in the modern part of Ljubljana which is worth seeing

Cukrarna Gallery, located in a renovated old sugar refinery, has a rich history tied to Slovenian cultural heritage. The space aims to be a contemporary cultural hub while honoring the building's past. Once used for refining imported sugar and transporting it via railway, the gallery now stands as an art center. Visitors can explore immersive installations and exhibitions at reasonable prices. Despite its vastness, the gallery offers a pleasant cafe and diverse exhibits that make it worth revisiting.
Thought provoking. Excellent use of space and quietness to allow awareness to expand, to inhabit the artist's intention. It won't be for everyone, but I found it a thought provoking and worthwhile experience.

A brief stroll from the city center along the river. The building is cool, although there aren't many exhibitions inside.
Howie — Google review
Very interesting building, refurbished from an abandoned sugar refinery. I didn't like the exhibitions that were curated for May, but would like to return and see the next ones. Would like to see, for instance, a dialogue with the triple height ceiling, which at the moment seems just an Instagramable whim and a loss of area. There will probably be an extension of the building (in red in the wooden models)which would bring the architectonic dialogue towards the TGH-48 Car Park, by the architect Savin Sever in 1969.

Emporium Gallery is a high-end department store housed in an elegant 1903 building, making it the first of its kind in Ljubljana. The store offers a range of fashion, accessories, and shoes from well-known brands. Visitors can admire the stunning architecture and browse through the neatly organized mall while receiving assistance from friendly staff.
This might be my favourite staircase. It feels slightly small but the curves of the wood are beautiful! Suffice to say I didn’t do any shopping!!
David C — Google review
The department store itself is pretty good, but I've had an issue with the security staff. As I was leaving the building after purchasing a tee-shirt and some pairs of socks, one of the security staff at the entrance vaguely waved at me, but I did not pay attention to him (and I don't speak Slovenian). His female colleague then followed me out of the building and literally grabbed me by my backpack (!) to ask me to come back inside for a routine check (to check that I had indeed a receipt matching my purchases). I understand that theft is a thing, that the security staff of department stores can perform random checks (although some electronic gates would make thefts more easy to detect and would make these checks less necessary), but in no way is the security staff of any store supposed to physically touch or grab customers unless there are any obvious signs of theft or misbehaviour from a customer! This is a breach of the basic rules of hospitality and business. This is absolutely shameful, and a terrible look to what is otherwise a very nice department store. I will never come back to this store, and I hope this staff gets trained to be more considerate with honest customers. This happened today, barely an hour ago, and this is my first review of any place on google maps ever (I'm not one to complain even when service is poor), but physically grabbing customers is absolutely beyond the pale!
Hubert M — Google review
The design of the store is great, the staircase entrance is beautiful. The prices are high because of the luxury brands available, overall a great place to buy luxury clothing.

Petrol stations in the capital city are a surprising sight, with unique designs dating back to the mid-century modernism era in Yugoslavia. Constructed between 1950 and 1970 by Milan Mihelic, these structures represent a pioneering design that combined material sciences and engineering innovations of the time with modernist architectural aesthetics. These petrol stations are an embodiment of Slovene Structuralism, showcasing a distinct regional building design style.

St. Nicholas’ Church in Ghent is really impressive! This old stone church stands tall in the city center, looking strong and beautiful. Inside, the high ceilings and big stained-glass windows are so pretty. The organ is huge and cool to see, even if it’s not playing. It’s free to enter, which is awesome, and it’s not too crowded. The history feels alive with all the old details around you. I loved the calm and peaceful vibe inside. It’s great for a quick visit to soak in some beauty and history. The location makes it easy to stop by while exploring Ghent. Definitely worth checking out!

This iconic square features a bronze statue, shaded by trees and a music pavilion. It is surrounded by monumental buildings such as the University of Ljubljana and the stunning Trinity Church with its remarkable Romanesque facade.
In 1821, it was the site of the Holy Alliance Congress—an international meeting during the era of the Concert of Europe, involving Austria, Russia, and Prussia. In the 20th century, it became a central location for Slovenia’s independence, autonomy, and resistance movements, frequently hosting public gatherings and protests. Today, it serves as a vibrant space for cultural festivals, concerts, open-air film screenings, and other civic events. The grey-toned grid-patterned pavement adds a touch of modern elegance and charm to the square.

The National Gallery of Slovenia, established in 1918, is the main art museum in the country and houses an extensive collection of fine art spanning from the 13th century to the 20th century. Housed in a stunning Neo-Renaissance palace with a modern glass facade, the gallery's permanent exhibition showcases nearly 600 works by Slovenian and European artists.
One of the most important art museums in Slovenia, the museum houses an extensive collection of Slovenian and European artworks from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. Founded in 1918, the gallery is located in a historic neoclassical building, later expanded with a modern glass façade. It is a must-visit for anyone seeking to understand Slovenian art history. The museum also holds the original Robba Fountain, one of Ljubljana’s iconic landmarks—now displayed in front of City Hall as a replica.

The National Gallery in Ljubljana is about a 15-minute walk from the Old Town, situated near Tivoli Park. Housed in a historic building with a modern interior, it offers a pleasant and accessible environment for visitors. The permanent exhibition showcases Slovenian art from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century, providing a clear and well-organized journey through the country’s artistic evolution. Information is available in both Slovenian and English, making it easy to navigate and understand. During our visit, we explored two temporary exhibitions: Baroque in Slovenia: Featuring over 170 artworks from the 17th and 18th centuries, this exhibition offers insight into the Baroque period’s influence on Slovenian art, highlighting the blend of Central European and Mediterranean artistic expressions. While the Baroque style isn‘t our favorite, the exhibition was well set-up. From Shadow into Light: The Sketchbooks of Ivana Kobilca: This exhibition delves into the sketchbooks of Ivana Kobilca, Slovenia’s most prominent female painter, providing a unique glimpse into her creative process and the development of her artworks. We really liked her work, and spent most of our time in this temporary exhibition. Tickets were purchased on-site without any issues. The gallery also includes a small shop and a café, perfect for a short break. We spent approximately 1.5 hours exploring the exhibitions, which felt sufficient to appreciate the collections without feeling rushed. Overall, the National Gallery is a recommended stop for those interested in art and its historical development in Slovenia.

Well designed and gorgeous art museum in Ljubljana. The tickets for temporary and permanent exhibitions costs only 9 euro for students. There are toilets and also baggage storage cabinets. The temporary exhibition was fine but that many in quantities. However, the permanent exhibition was a huge thing here! They were displayed in a magnificent hall and include statutes and artworks. Especially, there is a room where you can sit and quietly watch the painting of a few cows with comfortable music, what an enjoyment! In the back side of the museum, where the cafe is, has a spacious location that is more modernized design and wow! Overall, recommend spending 1 to 2 hours here!

Founded in 1821, the National Museum of Slovenia is the oldest national museum in the country, offering a deep and comprehensive look into Slovenian history through artifacts ranging from prehistoric times to antiquity, the medieval period, and modern history. The current building, constructed in the late 19th century, is designed in the Neo-Renaissance style, and it shares its premises with the Slovenian Museum of Natural History (Prirodoslovni muzej). One of the museum’s most famous artifacts is the Neanderthal flute, believed to be one of the oldest musical instruments in the world, dating back 50,000–60,000 years. Other notable items include a prehistoric dugout canoe from Lake Bohinj, artifacts from the Roman city of Emona, and golden jewelry once owned by Slovenian nobility.

Nestled along the riverbank, Plečnik's Arcades stand as a testament to the genius of renowned Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. This stunning series of covered markets not only serves as a vibrant hub for local food stalls and an art gallery but also embodies the spirit of community with its lively cafes and eateries. As you stroll through these arcades, you'll appreciate their elegant design that welcomes visitors into the heart of Ljubljana.
Located on the bank of the river, in our opinion is one of the best structures built by the famous architect, the covered markets, are an impressive design and built for the use of the people, there are many cafes and eateries within its walls, as well as market stalls, the whole area, comes alive with market people of different dat, from, the open kitchen, to the central market.

This arched structure stretches along the banks of the Ljubljanica River and was built between 1939 and 1944 based on a design by Jože Plečnik. Its semi-circular colonnade evokes the restrained elegance of classical arcades, while the vertically opened windows on the river side create a strong visual connection with the water. Reflecting Plečnik’s belief that even a marketplace can be beautiful, the space once served as a venue for selling fish, pastries, and processed foods. Today, it houses small shops, food stalls, gallery spaces, and cafés, blending architecture, daily life, and the charm of the riverside.

The University of Ljubljana, established in 1919, is renowned for its programs in social and natural sciences, technical studies, and sports. Situated along Gosposka ulica is the picturesque Kongresni trg square, featuring the university on its southern side and Kavarna Zvezda to the north. The university's location near Park Zvezda makes it a charming area for visitors to explore.
Classical style, very grand teaching building, I like this university 's work.

The University of Ljubljana is not just a place of learning; it's a stunning piece of history and architecture right in the heart of the city. The campus is spread out with beautiful old buildings that give off a classic European university vibe. Whether you’re walking around the central building or exploring some of the quieter parts of the campus, it’s easy to get lost in the charm of its historic structure. I passed by it while exploring the city and was impressed by how well the university blends in with the rest of Ljubljana’s architectural landscape, yet still stands out. It's a great spot for photos, especially with the sculptures and fountains around the area. If you're into history or architecture, it’s definitely worth checking out. A concert was being held just in front of it as the venue was set up - but unfortunately we did not get to see it.

Founded in 1919, the university is the oldest and largest national university in Slovenia. The grand building adjacent to Kongresni trg serves as the university’s main headquarters. Constructed in 1902 in the Neo-Baroque style, the building originally housed the provincial government of Carniola. Several faculty buildings and campus areas were designed by Jože Plečnik and are now protected as cultural heritage sites. The university is especially renowned for its programs in philosophy, architecture, law, natural sciences, and the arts. It is also the intellectual home of the Ljubljana School of Psychoanalysis, led by Slavoj Žižek, which blends philosophy, psychoanalysis, structuralism, and Marxism—establishing a distinctive voice within contemporary continental thought.

Very nice building which at first sight doesn't seem to be a seat of University. Located on very large square from which you have amazing view on Ljubljana castle. Interesting also the statue in front of the University building. Very strategic position and worth to visit at least for taking few photos.

As a student of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Artificial Intelligence, I’m attending a semester here. The campus is beautiful, with a peaceful and inspiring atmosphere. Opened in 1980, this is Slovenia’s largest cultural and arts centre, serving as a key venue for performing arts, exhibitions, film, literature, academic events, and international conferences. It stands as one of Ljubljana’s foremost hubs of culture and intellectual life. The centre is named after Ivan Cankar, Slovenia’s national writer and prominent public intellectual. Major national ensembles—including the Slovenian National Theatre, the Philharmonic, and the Ballet—frequently perform here. It also hosts high-profile international events such as the Ljubljana International Film Festival (LIFFe), literary festivals, academic symposia, and EU-level political gatherings.

Ljubljana Central Pharmacy, also known as Mayer Palace or Preseren Square 5 Palace, is a prominent Neo-Renaissance building located at the heart of Ljubljana. Designed by Ferdinand Hauser and built by Gustav Tonnies in the late 19th century, it stands out as an architectural gem. Visitors have praised the professional and friendly staff who provide excellent service and advice in fluent English.
Take care of you personally! Nice staff.

They don’t understand anything about your condition, what you really need or even about what they sell. Ridiculous.
Loïc G — Google review
I had online receipt of injections which I needed to take daily due my health condition. I had online receipt because Slovenia does not cure my disease. One pharmacist ordered it for me, the other told me that this is just scan, piece of invalid paper and not real receipt and basically told me to go away. I asked him what should I do? Can I go to emergency to receive medicine or should I die? He told me to stop arguing with him. So, apparently I could get sick from not getting medicine and faint in this pharmacy and nobody would care.

I went to see Cyrano de Bergerac, a modern slovene adaptation by Martin Crimp and directed by Tin Grabnar and I was pleasantly surprised both by ambiance, surroundings and costumes, and by the play adaptation and execution itself. The facility of course is top notch, with great service and cleanliness, with the exception of 2nd floor toilets, which were subpar. Overall a 5 star experience.

After soooo many years visiting our best speaking theatre... although just for a children play... The building urgently need profund renovation... there were lots of critics about that, but now when the left government is on power again they also stop all activities about renovation... and it's even smaller theatre building than for example Josefstadt or some provincial Brno theater, just to focus that area ...

Bridge
The Triple Bridge, also known as Tromostovje, is a 19th-century bridge with two adjacent 20th-century footbridges that span the Ljubljanica River in Ljubljana. Originally built to replace a medieval wooden bridge, it now connects the old city with the modern area.
The famous Triple Bridge is surrounded by all these buildings, restaurants and shops by the river. What a beautiful place to spend a good afternoon there. So relaxing for the tourists.
Kwokman N — Google review
One of the most unique and iconic architectural landmarks in Ljubljana, the bridge consists of three adjacent bridges set side by side. The central stone bridge was built in 1842, replacing an earlier wooden structure and originally intended for vehicular traffic. In 1932, architect Jože Plečnik added two side bridges for pedestrians. Today, all three bridges are pedestrian-only, forming a graceful connection between Prešeren Square and the Old Town. With classical stone railings, elegant street lamps, and Plečnik’s distinctive decorative touches, the bridge is a harmonious blend of function and beauty. It is stunning by day, but becomes even more magical at night, when the lights of the city reflect on the Ljubljanica river below.

Cobblers' Bridge is a charming spot in Ljubljana, offering a picturesque view of the river Ljubljanica and the city's stunning architecture. This bridge serves as a romantic meeting point and often features live music from a saxophone player accompanied by his singing dog. The surrounding area is abundant with greenery, creating a serene atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.
The river Ljubljanica is really nice, it separates the city but both sides are amazing and plenty of bridges on the river. Tourist ships go on the river, you can buy a ticket. The view is amazing. There are cozy restaurants on both sides, prices are medium, not expensive. You can see the castle in the distance.
Pisák T — Google review
This pedestrian-only bridge spans the Ljubljanica River, connecting Cankarjevo nabrežje with Hribarjevo nabrežje. In the Middle Ages, a wooden bridge stood here, but in 1931, Jože Plečnik redesigned it into the current concrete and stone structure. The bridge is notable for its neoclassical simplicity, with thick columns lining both sides that give it a distinctive architectural character. Its name comes from the fact that cobblers once had their workshops on or near the bridge.
Seokjin H — Google review
Looks better in person, the pictures can’t really give it the credit it deserves. The columns look Italian and the view from the bridge is magnificent. If you want a cute video of the boats travelling up and down the river, with a nice background, this is your spot, because the houses around the bridge are very pretty colours

Religious institution
The Ljubljana Mosque is a significant development in the city, reminiscent of historical mosque complexes that served as the foundation for new urban areas. This complex includes a religious school, cultural and office spaces, employee housing, a restaurant, and Slovenia's first mosque. The buildings are arranged around a central square with the mosque at its heart. After fourteen years of struggle, this architectural gem stands as a triumph for the Muslim community in Slovenia.
The Ljubljana Mosque’s exterior is an impressive blend of modern and traditional Islamic architectural elements. The clean, minimalist design features a smooth, light-colored facade that exudes calm and serenity. The elegant dome and slender minaret stand tall, creating a striking silhouette against the city’s skyline. Geometric patterns adorn the building, adding a beautiful touch of intricacy to the overall simplicity of the structure. What I found most captivating was how the mosque’s design complements its surroundings while still standing out as a unique and bold architectural statement. The combination of white tones and subtle detailing makes it a serene yet visually powerful presence in the city. It’s definitely worth admiring from the outside, even if you don’t go inside.

Milica S — Google review
Horrible experience! If you are a woman and go there, you will not be safe! We were all ladies and were kicked out of the mosque! The guard first started screaming at us from the level below, as one of the ladies was fixing her scarf telling her to cover and to get out (he has no right to be looking up to the women section of praying). We couldn't finish the Zikr, Dua and reading of Quran! When we left and had to pass through the women’s section for making ablution, and at that point some women uncovered to fix themself for the journey, he came there where he had no business being and started shouting again. In Bosnian he yelled “Marš Napolje,” which anyone who understands the language knows is the most degrading and disrespectful way to speak. If you are a woman and go there, you will not be safe! This is not Islamic Mosque! It's like someone is paying them to turn people away from Islam and give bad image to Muslims!

Plečnik's Trnovo Bridge is a stunning architectural gem in Ljubljana, offering picturesque views of the river with weeping willows and flowers in summer and a serene, austere beauty in winter. Designed by renowned architect Joze Plecnik, this bridge is adorned with trees, making it a rare and extraordinary sight. It serves as a gateway to the church and provides a peaceful escape from the bustling city center.
A very interesting bridge in a part of town worth strolling through. I recommend seeing this bridge while visiting the Roman Wall and other nearby sites.
Chip V — Google review
Located in the Trnovo district, this bridge spans the Gradaščica River and serves both vehicles and pedestrians. It was designed by Jože Plečnik around 1931 and 1932 as a concrete and stone bridge. What makes it unique is that it's more than just a crossing—it features columns, sculptures, flower pots, and even birch trees planted on the bridge itself, giving it the feeling of a small park. Plečnik envisioned the bridge not simply as infrastructure, but as a space for people to walk, pause, and rest—a place of everyday life, thoughtfully woven into the urban landscape.

One of the most beautiful bridges in Ljubljana and perhaps even in Europe. The trees growing on it make it extraordinary as incorporating trees into a bridge is an architectural rarity, due to the tehnical difficulties associated with it.
