Matsumoto-jō Castle, located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, is a 16th-century national treasure with striking black walls. Visitors can explore historical weapons exhibits and climb to the top for panoramic views of the city and snow-capped mountains. The castle grounds are adorned with maple and cherry trees, making it a popular spot for viewing red leaves and cherry blossoms in early November. The castle offers evening lighting events until 22:00.
Gorgeous castle both in the day and at night. Suggested buying timed tickets in advance else you'll need to line up (it was 100 minutes on the day we were there), but we just walked through, scanned and were in the castle within a few minutes. Once inside its a museum of sorts with displays of weapons the castle was designed to protect against (flint lock etc) and although it was busy if you wanted to read the displays simply allow people to go ahead of you and enjoy your own pace. We really enjoyed it!

It is one of Japan's premier historic castles. It is listed as a National Treasure of Japan. Completed in the late sixteenth century, it maintains its original wooden interiors and external stonework. It is a flatland castle. Lots of people here, careful with personal belongings. Very popular place. Plenty to see inside and outside. Wear comfy shoes, hat, sunscreen, take water. While outside is even terrain and easy walking, inside you have lot of steep stairs and crowds. Headroom is limited on some stairs. Fee charged for entry. Great place for photography. Lovely museum exhibits at each level

Truly a national treasure. This castle has been on my wishlist for so long. Visited on sunday 19 Oct. Even from the outer area you can feel the magnificent of this castle, beautiful and elegant castle. The stairs inside is steep and narrow, do it slowly and carefuly as to not hit your head to one of its wood beam. Also I had the chance to watched the live firearms show afterwards, its really cool, feels like going back to 1600s Sengoku jidai era. I enjoyed my visit to this castle, thank you.
Mario K — Google review
Last year, I visited Matsumoto Castle, and it was an incredible experience rich in history and culture. Standing before the majestic black-and-white fortress, I could truly feel the spirit of Japan’s samurai era. The castle’s elegant design, surrounded by a serene moat and distant mountains, creates a perfect harmony between strength and beauty. Inside, the wooden interiors and steep staircases tell stories of centuries past. It’s not just a castle—it’s a living piece of Japan’s heritage. A must-visit for anyone who loves history and tradition! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Emir K — Google review
Visually impressive from the outside, stunning architecture and layout. Dissapointingly dull on the inside! Other than a display of weapons there is precious little explanation of the castle's background, how people lived or the evolution. Very good volunteer guides but they are not allowed to enter the castle itself. Feels like a wasted opportunity for an immersive historical experience
JT — Google review
Matsumoto Castle is one of Japan's oldest original castles, with its origins dating to the 16th century during the Sengoku period. It is known for its black exterior, earning it the nickname "Crow Castle," and its striking black and white architecture. While it appears to have five external stories, the interior has six, with steep, narrow stairs designed for defense. The castle was saved from demolition in the 19th century by local residents and was designated a National Treasure in 1952. We visited the castle on Friday 21st Nov., there was no queue and we didn’t book the tickets earlier. The stairs to go upstairs are quite high (40-50 cm) so keep it in mind for your visit.
Tania N — Google review
Matsumoto Castle is definitely worth going inside despite the need to queue to enter the main keep (we waited about 45 minutes). The internal stairs are very restrictive and steep, which is to be expected of an ancient castle, but the views from the top floor are amazing. I recommend booking your ticket online ahead of time to avoid the long on-the-day queue - online tickets allow you to go straight in at your allocated time. If it is busy, take your time on the stairs, allow groups to pass, and enjoy the architecture. If you collect stamps, there are a total of three: two can be found at the gate entrance after the ticket office, and one is inside the management office. Finally, if you visit during the winter, make sure to wrap up, as the castle interior is very cold.
Leo — Google review
Matsumoto Castle was a short walk from our hotel, though a local bus is also available. We bought our tickets on the spot. While there was little crowd when we arrived, it is still cheaper if you purchase tickets online in advance. As one of Japan’s few surviving original castles from the sixteenth century, Matsumoto Castle retains its authentic wooden interior. This also means there are no lifts, and visitors must remove their shoes before entering the keep. The staff provide a plastic bag for you to carry your shoes. Inside, expect many narrow and steep staircases as you make your way up and down the different floors. Before entering the keep, the castle grounds have a spacious resting area with numerous vending machines, ideal for a short break. A well preserved piece of history, worth the visit.

Former Kaichi School, built in 1876, is one of Japan's oldest elementary school buildings and now serves as an education museum. The Western-influenced design with Japanese elements like the roof over the main entrance and dragon carvings make it a unique sight. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring old artworks, chairs, tables, and other educational artifacts from the Edo period to modern times for a glimpse into Japan's educational history.
I think whether a place is a city of culture or not depends on the type of lord who ruled it in the past. I think the reason why Matsumoto, Nagano has such high academic ability is because the lord originally believed that "education is important." Education is the most important thing in life as a human being.

As western people, this was les interesting. This school is built according to Western architecture, but with the building techniques they were familiar with. You learn a lot about the architecture of the building and you can feel how proud people are and were with the building, but I was hoping to learn more about the school system and educational methods. Also not everything was in English, we had to use Google translate a lot. Definitely take a sweater here because it is quite cold inside. We went in spring.

Excellent heritage site. Love to see the significance of this ex school in the past progressing the development of japan during meiji era. Residential area and surrounding of the school are lovely and tranquil and its a journey by itself. Entrance fee are very reasonable around 300-500¥

A historical place where the European missionaries setup school for the local children. The architecture is a mixture of European design with some Asian sculptures. The school is temporary closed for refurbishment. It's next to the local central library and a short walk from the castle.
Won L — Google review
It was interesting to see and read about the history of the school and the building. As I am a foreign tourist, I would have appreciated more descriptions in English.
Douglas C — Google review
Really interesting historic building right in Matsumoto close to the castle. There isn't a huge amount of English but it seemed that the key points of the building and materials were translated into English as well which was very helpful. The building itself is a beautiful combination of Japanese construction and western aesthetics that makes for a really interesting tour around the school. They do make you take off your shoes and put on school slippers, just a heads up.

Had a great time there! To be fair, it built up with some fun interactions with locals, but the museum itself is quite interesting. In hindsight there wasn't really that much, still I managed to spend over an hour in that. Has a quite lovely feel to it.

Historic Sites
Yohashira-jinja Shrine is a small traditional religious shrine that is a popular destination for viewing colorful autumn foliage. The shrine is located along Frog Street, named after the Kajika frogs that used to inhabit the Metoba River. The street is adorned with ceramics and signboards depicting these amphibians, paying homage to their legacy in the area. Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere of the shrine and take in the surrounding natural beauty, including nearby rivers and vibrant foliage.
Very serene Shinto shrine in the middle of the busy Matsumoto city. You can catch locals on their way passing through the shrine for a quick prayer or a quick pause. Beautifully lit in the evening too and there is a fun artisan shopping and streetfood street just south of the shrine.
Sam B — Google review
Having enjoyed a lovely stroll along Frog Street, you might come across a beautiful shrine nestled along the way. It tends to be less crowded, particularly if you visit during the week. The grounds are wonderfully laid out, and the atmosphere is exceptionally peaceful. If you happen to be in the vicinity, a visit to pay your respects would certainly be worthwhile.
Matthew C — Google review
Yohashira-jinja Shrine is a peaceful spot near Nawate Street in Matsumoto, built in 1879 and dedicated to four major Shinto deities, rare for a shrine. “Yohashira” means “four pillars,” referring to these gods. Despite its central location, it’s surprisingly quiet and calm. There's also a “Matchmaking Pine,” symbolising connection. A nice place to take a breather away from the crowd.
Melvin J — Google review
Very cool Shinto Shrine. Many other smaller shrines here too. Well kept and visited my many.

Yohashira-jinja Shrine (四柱神社) is an absolutely serene and beautiful place to visit! Nestled in the heart of Matsumoto, this shrine is rich in history and cultural significance. The grounds are well-maintained, and the atmosphere is peaceful, making it a perfect spot for reflection or simply enjoying the tranquil surroundings. The architecture of the shrine is impressive, and the attention to detail in the carvings and structures is a testament to its cultural heritage. The nearby river and surrounding trees add to the charm, especially during cherry blossom season or autumn foliage. What stood out to me the most was the friendly and welcoming staff. They made the experience even more special. Don't forget to try your luck with the omikuji fortunes or participate in a prayer ritual! Whether you're a history enthusiast, a spiritual seeker, or just someone who appreciates natural beauty, Yohashira-jinja Shrine is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

I stopped by here around mid-July 2023. The shrine is pretty close to Matsumoto Castle and you can get to it easily by walking through Nawate Shopping Street.

As the name suggests, the Yohashira Shrine enshrines four gods of Japanese mythology. It is locally famous, especially for fulfilling business and matchmaking. Paid parking is available on the east side of the shrine.

The Matsumoto Timepiece Museum is a contemporary gallery that houses an extensive collection of working clocks and watches from various time periods. Established in 1974 with a donation of antique clocks and timepieces, the museum offers an introduction to the history of watches and showcases over a thousand timepieces dating back to the sixteenth century.
My interest in watches and clock bought me to this place. I like the collections and how it was presented. Thank you.

A very interesting place, especially if you're into clocks. It's a small but well-maintained collection of clocks, as well as exhibits that go over the history of timekeeping. The clocks are organized by both historical era and area of origin.
Edwin L — Google review
This is a small but very charming museum for anyone interested in timepieces in general and the history of Japanese clocks in particular. Exhibits range from watches to very large clocks, with quite a few very distinctive and quirky examples. There is also a room of phonographs. I enjoyed this immensely - particularly the sound to ticking, because all the clocks seemed to be working. Great value!

Nice and cozy small clocks and watches museum. You can spend time approx 30-60 min here. Enjoy seeing the many types of clocks and watches here.

We went there on a rainy day. It’s small but worth the fees. Worth a visit for those interested in clocks and watches. Almost all the exhibits are working and there are some truly interesting pieces with gramophone live session.
Mugdha G — Google review
Interesting place to add to your Matsumoto itinerary. You could spend more or less an hour here before heading to Matsumoto Castle. You can see interesting clocks and most have English descriptions on them. I think all of the time pieces are still working. So you'll definitely learn something to your visit here

Sweet little museum in Matsumoto. Make sure you get inside 10-15 minutes before round hour, because most clocks here ring! Some of the special ones do really weird things, so make sure to look around and go around between them when they ring.

Matsumoto Station serves as a starting point for various adventures, such as a trip to Kamikochi via the Alpico line and a bus ride. At Kamikochi, visitors can explore nature trails and even engage in mountain climbing. The area offers stunning views of the Hokata mountain ranges. Additionally, the station is home to the Honda Collection, featuring 342 timepieces from Japan, Europe, and the United States.
Matsumoto is not a very big city, but it is convenient. The train station and bus stop are close together, which is a very convenient design.

A convenient station connected to a department store, making it easy for shopping and dining. It serves as the starting point to Kamikochi, so it’s often busy with tourists. A helpful tourist information center is also available.

Great JR staff at Matsumoto We were visiting as tourists and had put luggage into a locker; and then with 20 mins before our bus was to leave, realised we had lost the QR code to get luggage back. Wonderful help from a JR Ticket office woman, who spoke enough English to understand our problem. She and another woman researched to work out the solution, and called a JR Manager who arrived quickly and could override the locker system and open our locker. Luggage back, heart rate back to normal, divorce avoided. Thank you JR

Good place to base yourself for visits to Kamicochi, Nakasendo Trail and Nagano. Great rail links, including Kanazawa, Nagoya and Tokyo. In town you have the castle plus a variety of eateries.

A smaller station on the express train route connecting Nagano and Nagoya. It's also a nice jumping point for a bus or bus and train combo to Kamikochi. For that matter to enjoy the town and its castle. The ticket to Kamikochi can be purchased on 2 ticket machines to the left of a bank of the regular ticket machines. The tourist information staff speak great English and can help you if you have questions. There is a connected Midori mall for shops and restaurants. Also there are bakeries and restaurants outside the station.

JR Matsumoto station, starting station of my trip to Tateyama-Kurobe alpine route (JR Matsumoto - Shinano-Omachi station), in station have many coin locker for leave your luggage and department store adjacent to station floor 1st-3rd - so comfortable!!
WICHITPHUM P — Google review
It is the Worst railway station I have encountered ever. Very often in the evening, there can be a very long queue at the fare adjustment booth of the station, and the processing is slow. It is caused by O-ito Line that is not ready for Suica and Pasmo IC cards, and many stations on the railway line stop selling tickets from late afternoon when the passenger volume increases. If you come from the O-ito Line, there is no way but to go to the fare adjustment window to get out of the Matsumoto station. JRE has hired a good number of young staff recently, but what they should invest is not the human resource but the facility for the IC cards and automatic ticket gate.
Y H — Google review
This is a main station of Matsumoto. Clean, medium size and not complicated. There are many signs that show timetables and tracks so you will never get lost in this station. Luggage storage is also available here. Staffs are very helpful. Many shops and restaurants are in and round the station.

The しき美松本駅前店, a restaurant known for its tasty cuisine and accommodating employees, offers an affordable dining experience. With a Sushi set priced at 2100 Yen and the delicious unagi dish available for 2600 Yen, customers can enjoy satisfying meals without breaking the bank. The eel itself is renowned for its delectable flavor, and patrons also appreciate the excellent service provided by the staff.
I ordered the unagi in a rice bowl and my husband ate the sushi and chicken yakitori. We were both impressed with the high quality food. Fresh and tasty! And warm and outstanding service. Thank you for the most delicious dinner!

Horrible staff. Should have read the reviews prior to entry. The man was VERY rude….we couldn’t even ask a question….. “Order drink” is all he would bark! Don’t bother. Big expensive plates. No individual selection. And the staff won’t even listen or look at the translation for “we have a question first” ….got up and left….. if it starts that way it will only get worse!
JJ S — Google review
As noted by other reviewers the sushi counter chap is extremely rude. I sensed something wasn’t right when the first word I heard upon entering was not welcome but to use the hand sanitizer. I thought I’d try the horse sashimi promoted in the menu but he said no dinner only. I then asked about the grilled yellow Jack and then he barked NO! Dinner! UNDERSTAND? Which is rude in any cultural setting and in case of Japan is probably just short of spitting in your face. Nowhere in the menu did it indicate separate items for lunch and dinner. The unagi bowl I was allowed to have tasted all right but nothing to rave about. Considering tiny and at Y3300, totally poor value. And this is no Tokyo but a sleepy backwater town.

The 1st time hear was 2years ago. We were impressed with the foods; sushi, unagi, raw oysters and grilled squid are the best!! so we went back and expected for all the yummy foods. But this time so disappointed, it was Sunday evening and the shop was not crowded but there were only 2 staffs; the sushi chef & another staff who did everything cooking & serving T.T When we ordered, the sushi uncle only allowed us to order one meal each!!! we asked for squid & oysters but he said no time!!! take long time to do!!! Farm
Nestled in Azumino, Japan, Daio Wasabi Farm is a sprawling 15-hectare wasabi farm that has been operating since 1915. It draws in approximately 1.1 million visitors annually with its picturesque landscape featuring large wasabi fields irrigated by pristine water from the Northern Alps.
We really enjoyed our visit here. We took a ride on the clear-bottom boat — a fantastic experience cruising over the river, and well worth the ¥1,400 per person. It was fascinating to see how wasabi is grown directly in the river from a hot spring source. We also tried ice cream topped with fresh wasabi, it is surprisingly delicious! There were plenty of local snacks available too, perfect for taking home or enjoying on the go. Highly recommended!

This is the first wasabi farm I’ve visited. As with other places on interest in Japan, Daio Wasabi Farm did not disappoint and I was fascinated with the history, stories and wasabi farming processes. If anything else, it’s a nice, peaceful place for a leisurely walk or to relax. The farm is surrounded by sceneries of beautiful mountains. The cafes served up very decent food and drinks. There were many choices of snacks and wasabi products to purchase as souvenirs. Please visit this gem of a place but please leave nothing but footprints!

The Daio Wasabi Farm is absolutely beautiful — the scenery is stunning and peaceful, with clear streams running through the fields and lovely walking paths all around. The restaurant is also a great experience: the rice set with your own fresh wasabi root to grate is both fun and delicious. A perfect stop to enjoy nature and try something unique to Japan.

Lovely. I recommend on taking bikes from the near town and ride through the fields - it’s gorgeous! For wasabi lovers the local shop is amazing, they has some really good wasabi based foods :) Try the smoked cheese with wasabi it was the best thing we ate there. Wasabi ice ream was also fun.

Dario Wasabi Farm is a large majestic space in rural Azumino city only short train ride from Matsumoto. There is no entrance fee to walk along the paths around the farm, People stroll with family members or a pet amongst trees, a water wheel, with the constant flow of mountain water that flows amongst the wasabi plants which are under a black tarp to keep them cool while they grow. The 17C degree water and cool breezes cultivates the wasabi plants which you see in several fields around the property. If a day out in the fresh air and the taste of spice pleases you, then this is the place to go.
Cami H — Google review
The farm is very huge and accessible to everyone with no entry fee which is very good. Even though there is no public transport you can take taxi from nearest station and also get the taxi number to call from the Wasabi farm. The farm can also help call a taxi for you to your nearest station or destination. It’s fascinating to see how wasabi grows and it needs fresh spring running water all the time and the farm maintains and regulates the fresh water stream for wasabi. Also there are lots of good items based on wasabi that you can enjoy and fresh fruit juice available when we visited. Overall it was a good experience if you are interested in farming activities.
Deepthi R — Google review
There isn't a lot to do, but it's a cool place with no entrance fee. It was the first time I'd gotten to see wasabi plants in person. The air felt very fresh and it wasn't crowded at all, so it was nice to walk around. It has a big souvenir shop and a couple cafes. The wasabi ice cream was interesting, but it tasted basically like vanilla. However, the fresh wasabi on top was very strong. Again, not worth a full day trip but nice to stop by for a couple hours.
Lesley — Google review
A pain in the butt to get to (a train runs from Matsumoto like once every 3 hours). But free to enter with a ton of beautiful scenery and so interesting seeing how the Wasabi is grown. I don't recommend the Wasabi ice cream (not to my taste) but I do highly recommend visiting.

Located just a short walk from JR Hotaka Station, Rokuzan Art Museum is a charming gallery set in a delightful garden. It showcases the works of Rokuzan Ogiwara, a Meiji-era sculptor known as the 'Rodin of the Orient', along with other Japanese artists. The museum's building resembles a church and was constructed in 1958.
This is the museum of the genius sculptor "Rokuzan" who died young. There are not many sculptures, but they are all wonderful. It's a little disappointing that the explanations are mostly in Japanese. The poems written by Kotaro Takamura are touching and beautiful.

Without any plan to travel to this place, and drop by at Hotaka Station. From Hotaka Station open google maps and found this museum. Hit the right spot. It is small museum. But the autumn view very nice. From Hotaka Station about 7 minutes walk. For Infection prevention, you need to wear mask, disinfectant alcohol and write down your contact number. The entry 700 YEN. The art of sculpture by Moriye Ogihara (Rokuzan) or enjoy the view of building and its garden.

(Translated by Google) "Rokuzan Art Museum" In August 2013, my wife and I traveled to Azumino. We bought a model of a church made out of red clay from a souvenir shop here. It's still covered in dust and is one of our exhibits. More than the bronze statue, I was more interested in the small pitcher pond in the garden and the brick church covered in ivy. Sorry, Mr. Ogiwara Rokuzan. The bronze statue reminded me of Rodin's small grains. I later looked it up and found out that Rodin was the artist, which made sense. For lunch, we ate at "Soba Kamijo" at 5256-1 Hodaka. Afterwards, we visited the "Tabuchi Yukio Memorial Museum" (Insects) at 5078-2 Minamihotaka and the "Sangaku Art Museum" at 3613 Hodaka Ariake. We stayed at the resort house "Claret" at 2354-1 Hodaka Maki. (Translated by Google) There is a permanent exhibition space dedicated to Emile Gallé (charges apply). When I said "Gare", I was only familiar with lamps shaped like mushrooms, but there were a variety of other works. There was also an explanation of the production techniques, which I enjoyed. However, the exhibition space is not very large and the number of works is limited, so I felt that the admission fee was a little high. There is also a glass workshop inside the museum, and you can even take a close look at the melting furnace (I guess that's a good idea). You can also try your hand at glassblowing and glass bead making. Various glass products and crafts were also on display and for sale, so it took about 2 to 3 hours to go around them all. Upon entering Mos Burger, I noticed that the store was relatively empty as it had just opened. This eatery is not only popular among children but also provides a delightful experience for parents and their little ones. Ramen restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Azumino, Ikematsu is a beloved Chinese restaurant that has stood the test of time. This quaint eatery boasts a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike. With seating options ranging from cozy counter spots to spacious tables, it's perfect for families or solo diners. The menu features an array of delectable dishes, including their highly recommended miso ramen, which is rich and flavorful.
(Translated by Google) Cash only 🏠 A warm interior reminiscent of the Showa era Entering the restaurant, you'll find a welcoming space enveloped in the warmth of wood. Potted plants line the counter seats, and the sounds and aromas of cooking drift softly through the partition separating the restaurant from the kitchen, creating a nostalgic and relaxing atmosphere. Though the space is retro, it's clean and comfortable. It's bustling with a wide range of customers, from solo diners to families and local regulars. Table seating, counter seating, and raised tatami seating are available, catering to any dining style. Posters and calendars adorning the interior convey a warm atmosphere that evokes a sense of connection to the local community. ⸻ 🍜 A classic chuka soba noodle dish and a miso ramen with plenty of vegetables This time, we tried the ever-popular chuka soba and miso ramen. ● chuka soba (soy sauce ramen) The moment the bowl arrived, I was instantly knocked out by the nostalgic aroma. The clear, golden soup has a perfect balance of animal-based broth and rich soy sauce, creating a gentle flavor that's hard to resist sipping. The toppings are simple yet efficient: char siu, naruto (fish cake), bamboo shoots, and green vegetables. The medium-thick, curly noodles mix well with the soup, creating a smooth, slurpable texture. It's a bowl that evokes a sense of comfort and nostalgia, making it a dish you'll want to return to again and again. ● Miso Ramen (with Vegetables) This is a hearty dish! The savory flavor of the stir-fried vegetables blends seamlessly into the miso soup, instantly stimulating your appetite. Topped with bean sprouts, chives, cabbage, carrots, ground meat, and plenty of corn, it's both visually and satisfyingly satisfying. The soup isn't too rich, with a slightly sweet miso base that pairs perfectly with the vegetables. On a cold day, this bowl is a hearty, savory flavor that warms you to the core. ⸻ 👨‍🍳 The service is warm and welcoming, and the local connection gives you a sense of security. The staff are all friendly and always smiling, even when they're busy. Their attentive service was impressive. They were also attentive when refilling water and checking orders, and the laid-back hospitality you expect from a long-established restaurant is truly comforting. ⸻ 📝 Overall: Not flashy, but still makes you want to come back. Chuka Ikematsu isn't a place that prides itself on flashy presentation or impressive ramen. But that's what makes it great. The comforting flavor makes you want to come back every day. Rather than a "special bowl of ramen," this ramen is the kind of ramen you'll find here, the kind you'd call "the best bowl of ramen in your life." ⸻ 💡 Recommended for: • Want to try local ramen • Love a nostalgic, comforting flavor • Prefer miso ramen with lots of vegetables • Want to bring children and older people along ⸻ It was a place of comfort in Azumino that I'll definitely visit again. Thank you for the delicious meal, "Chuka Ikematsu."

To be honest, the flavor was always consistent whenever I went when the owner was cooking directly, but since the younger members have been taking over, the flavor has been inconsistent, sometimes bland and sometimes rich, and the noodles have been soggy and mushy. Champon on mainland Honshu has a different kind of appeal to it than the Nagasaki version, and within my reach, the nearest places are Misato Shichifuku, Yamagatamura Izumi, and Toyoshina Ikematsu. However, Misato Shichifuku has gone out of business, so I only rely on the remaining two, but the downside is that Ikematsu's flavor can vary greatly. When it's good, it's really delicious, but... This time it was too bland, and the portion was smaller. The zagyo had a chive-like flavor that didn't suit my taste. This time it was a disappointment. Fukashi-jinja Shrine, located near the Matsumoto City Museum of Art, is a serene temple dedicated to two Shinto deities: Suwamiyojin and Tenjin. The shrine features carved lion and bull statues and hosts the lively Tenjin Festival during summer, where 18 traditional wooden floats converge at the shrine from surrounding neighborhoods. This festival brings out the cultural richness and liveliness of Matsumoto.

If this establishment were located anywhere other than Japan, it would receive a four-star rating. However, the specials and the impeccable cooking of the food make it well worth the rating. I highly recommend trying their fries with mentaiko Mayo as they are delightful. The beef stew is particularly noteworthy, boasting a perfect balance of tender meat and well-cooked vegetables. The stew sauce is deliciously flavorful and surprisingly complex for a dish of its kind.
It was perfect, I really loved that they had fresh cheese as side in breakfast menu, there's the drink bar included in the menu, so you can take 2 coffee or 2 fruit juice if you want. I love the concept and the pancakes are as good as in the US.

So if this was anywhere except Japan it would be 4 stars but the specials and the way the food is cooked so perfectly is well worth the rating , you must try the fries and mentaiko Mayo , it is so nice , the beef stew has a great balance of meat that is perfectly tender and well cooked veggies , the stew sauce is very tasty and quite complex in flavour for a stew. The seasonal menu is interesting and I mean interesting that I really would try most of the items. Just be careful with the hamburgers and keema as they tend for some strange reason to mix pork in the patties , but the menu does state when something is 109% beef which is good. The staff as always are very efficient and manage our lack of Japanese well.

It was my first time eating there in about 10 years with my kids, and it was delicious. The tables were spaced out well, so we had a great time with our kids. I was full and wanted dessert, so I'd like to try that next time. I also got the app, so I'll definitely come back. I couldn't finish the fries, so I bought a takeaway box for 49 yen? to take home! Nestled close to home, カフェバリエ has become a beloved spot for many locals since its inception. This charming café offers a delightful atmosphere that perfectly complements its delicious menu. During a recent Christmas lunch, guests were treated to beautifully presented dishes that not only looked appetizing but also tantalized the taste buds. The warmth from the wood-burning stove provided a cozy refuge from the chilly weather outside, making each sip of hot tea even more comforting.

(Translated by Google) My family went there because a friend recommended it and they liked it. The store's cafe atmosphere and view were great, and the food was delicious! It seems like a tourist price, but considering there are 8 types on one plate, I think it's reasonable (it's a lot of work). Until January 24, 2024, only lunch plates will be served during the day, and although they were served very quickly, it seems like it will take a long time (it's best to allow yourself some time as it's a leisurely wait system). They also sell handmade accessories and I think it's fun to look at them. The Year of the Dragon figurine was next to the cash register and it was so cute! (It seems to be a product from a nearby workshop. I'll look for it next time.) I think the parking lot is quite large. Soba noodle shop
Ikkyu-an is an exceptionally satisfying soba noodle shop located conveniently near hotaka station. The quality of their wasabi soba and regular soba is outstanding, with noodles that possess a delightful blend of texture - being scrumptiously springy, chewy, and bouncy all at once. The dipping sauce provided for the noodles also holds its own in terms of flavor. For those seeking an authentic soba experience, Ikkyu-an comes highly recommended.

The noodles were thin, just the way I like them. They were firm and moist, and even raw (without dipping them in broth), they were delicious. The wasabi wasn't spicy, and the pleasant aroma didn't overwhelm the flavor of the soba. The soba soup after the meal was also delicious. One disappointing aspect of the service was that the middle door blocked the timing of calling the staff from the tatami room, which made it difficult to get in. I knew they offered soba soup, but I didn't know when it would be brought until I asked, "Can I have some?" It would have been more considerate if they'd waited until the entire meal was finished before asking along with the receipt. Japanese curry restaurant
Hanjiro Soup Curry is a relaxed eatery that specializes in seasonal curry soup. With an excellent dinner experience, it comes highly recommended for a satisfying meal. The service provided is friendly and efficient, ensuring timely delivery of orders. The flavorful soup curries are deliciously spiced and offer options for both children and adults. The vegetables are expertly cooked to perfection, exemplifying their true taste. Generous portions make it advisable to opt for half-sizes when dining with kids.
Our dinner was excellent. Definitely recommended to stop for a meal. We will visit again. The service was very friendly with our order served timely. The soup curries were tasty, with the right amount of spicies, with choices for both kida and parents. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and tasted how they way they should always do! The portions were quite generous, so for kids I wiuld recommend half-size. The location is fairly easy to find, with parking available. The restaurant is located next to a small river with plenty of trees. There are even ourdoor tables, that must be great for lunch.

(Translated by Google) I visited the store for the first time in several years as I passed by the store, but I was told that it will be closing in June 2024... It appears that the store will be relocated from Azumino to Matsumoto, and the store manager will be operating the store alone. In addition to the interior design of the store, which looks like a cafe, it also has a restaurant where you can enjoy authentic soup curry on a terrace surrounded by nature in Azumino, and it seems that it had many fans, so I feel sad that it has moved. I ordered a soup curry with bone-in chicken and colorful vegetables, and the bone-in chicken was simmered in a spicy soup until the meat was soft, and vegetables such as potatoes and eggplant were slowly fried, served with five-grain rice. This fits great. If I have a chance, I would definitely like to visit the new store. Pork bones, beef bones, beef tendon, chicken bones, aromatic vegetables, and fruits are simmered for 12 hours and left overnight. Moreover, it is made with natural water from Azumino. This time and effort is worth it! The moment the depth of the bouillon and the aroma of the spices hit your tongue, it's so shocking that a soup curry conference is held in your brain! The main feature, the bone-in chicken, is so soft that it easily falls apart with a fork. The aroma of spices rises with the steam, and your appetite is completely turned on. The soup is a bit thick and has many layers of flavor. A gentle depth that makes you feel the love of the creator seeping out in each bite. It's like a drinking symphony. In addition, there are tons of seasonal vegetables. Eggplant, green peppers, pumpkin, carrots...the flavors of the ingredients really stand out, and it feels like they're not just an accompaniment, but a companion to the main dish. The rice is Azumino-grown Koshihikari rice grown by contracted farmers. It goes perfectly with the soup, creating a miraculous balance between European curry and spiced curry. The blessings of the land, the thoughts of the chef, and the love for the diners. It's all on a spoon. (Translated by Google) It's been a while since I last visited. I visited at 12:25 on a weekday. There are 6 parking spaces in front of the store and 10 spaces in the back, but both are narrow so please be careful. First, please register at the order reception machine. The ticket number was 13 and there were two groups waiting to enter the store. Select your seating type: (inside the store) (on the terrace) (anywhere as soon as possible). After waiting in the waiting room for 30 minutes, I was guided to a seat on the second floor of the store. Orders will be placed on your smartphone by scanning the QR code. The drinks are self-serve, but you can choose cold water or lemon water. This time, I ordered "Bone-in chicken and colorful vegetable soup curry" for 2,180 yen. I asked for the second level of spiciness, medium spiciness. "Bean sprout namul" comes with the service. The curry arrived at 13:15, which is another 20 minutes of waiting after ordering. As expected, delivery time is faster on weekdays. A spicy and flavorful soup curry. The flavor is strong, so you can feel the saltiness, but the chicken is stewed until tender and the colorful vegetables are well-cooked. I think roux and five-grain rice go very well together. Although it is a popular restaurant, as mentioned in the reviews, it is a restaurant that has many pros and cons in many ways. After visiting several times, I have gotten used to the atmosphere of the restaurant, but when I visited for the first time on a Saturday, it was quite crowded and I chose to sit on the terrace, but I had to wait a long time. I was once served curry in a take-out bowl and a plastic spoon, and I was extremely offended by what seemed like a shoddy response. It would have been nice if there had been an explanation first, but at that time, I felt that the owner didn't care about the soup curry. Also, why not take measures that would be impossible at other stores, such as asking customers to pay for infectious disease prevention costs for a period of time? There was a time when I felt distrustful, but looking at the reviews, it seems like they no longer charge infection control fees these days. People's tastes can vary depending on the restaurant's atmosphere, customer service attitude, etc., but if you're just evaluating the taste, I think it's a delicious curry restaurant. Additionally, the adjacent building features a food court with expansive windows offering stunning views to the east.

I’m 95 kg and 185 cm tall. I was shopping for new T-shirts and sweaters, but the largest size available was XL. While XL fits me fine, I prefer a bit more room so I can feel comfortable—I don’t want to feel restricted while walking around or sitting down. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any shirts or sweaters in 2XL. That said, I don’t blame the stores here at all. I’m a foreigner and probably larger than average for this area. Anyway, this place is still great for relaxing and grabbing a bite to eat.

This is a huge, modern shopping center (one of the largest in Nagano) with three separate zones. It has everything you need: a big AEON Style supermarket (great for groceries/souvenirs), popular Japanese and international fashion brands (Muji, H&M, GU, etc.), and a cinema. The Food Court (Food Forest) and restaurant areas have tons of variety for lunch or dinner. It's a convenient stop, located within walking distance of Matsumoto Castle and the Museum of Art. A good place to escape the heat/rain or stock up!

Museums
The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is a must-visit landmark in the city, alongside the famous Matsumoto Castle. This museum is dedicated to artists associated with Nagano Prefecture and offers an immersive experience into the world of Yayoi Kusama, a renowned contemporary artist born in Matsumoto. Even before entering the museum, visitors are greeted by the impressive outdoor sculpture 'The Visionary Flowers,' which leaves a lasting impression.
I truly enjoyed my time at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art. The museum is located in the city center, just a few minutes’ walk from Matsumoto Castle and Matsumoto City Museum – making all combined a great day-trip itinerary coming from Tokyo. In this museum I first learn that Yayoi Kusama is originally from Matsumoto. The museum itself is designed in Kusama’s spirit with her art at the front of the museum and her famous red dots covering the windows. The museum has a number of floors, mostly showing local / other art by different artists. The highlight for me was Kusama’s special gallery at the top floor – taking the visitor on a journey through Kusama’s life, and the different phases she went through and created in. The gallery showed beautiful art created by Kusama across different genres (paintings, statues, mirror-rooms and more). Lastly, the museum also has an external garden where you can sit and relax during your visit to the venue. Overall, this is a great museum and I had a great time visiting it and learning more about Matsumoto and specifically about Kusama. I highly recommend to visit this place when you visit Matsumoto.
Adam S — Google review
A small but very beautiful museum with a collection of art from Yayoi Kusama herself. While you can’t take photos inside (except for one area), the grounds themselves are beautiful with a cafe and an amazing gift shop. I highly recommend it if you have 1-2 hours to spare.
Moriah — Google review
Great experience for the work of Yayoi Kusama. The museum is recommended as the best place in Japan to witness Yayoi's work (Matsumoto is her place of birth). The interactive part is memorable (photos and videos not allowed in these rooms, hence no media added to my post on these aspects). I would say 30-60min are enough to visit the museum - there are some other areas besides Yoyoi's rooms. I would have liked more Yayoi's merchandise in the shop. Definitely a must-see in Matsumoto!

Great for Yayoi Kusama Fans, but a small museum. We came specifically to see the permanent Yayoi Kusama collection, which is excellent (don't miss the stunning outdoor pieces!). The entrance fee is very reasonable/affordable. However, the overall museum space is quite small. The exhibition area is limited, so there isn't a huge amount of content to see outside of the main Kusama works. It's a quick visit, but definitely worth it if you are a fan of her art!
Awanafan — Google review
Well worth visiting for the Yusama exhibits and installations alone. JPY800 to enter and they have a great gift shop and cafe too. There are not many places within the gallery that you can take photos, but that doesn’t really matter as it’s a memorable experience.

So fun to see the museum that honors Kusama. We were just in Naoshima 10 days ago, home to her yellow pumpkin and hollow red pumpkin. The installations she created at this museum are extraordinary. There was also a fabulous exhibition of Japanese contemporary artists that we thoroughly enjoyed.

Shinmai Media Garden is a mall with a gallery, shop, and supermarket. It has an art gallery on the top floor. There are also cafes and shops on the second floor. The mall is a great place to observe while you're in Matsumoto.
We enjoyed a lunch/snack on the third floor of the media center. We ate at the deli and cafe L’Oiseau. The food was a visual experience and the taste was incredible. I had a wagyu burger. The tomato had been roasted which added incredible flavor. It was perfectly cooked and on a homemade bun. By far, this was the best burger I have eaten in Japan. 🇯🇵 My husband enjoyed a salad and quiche. My son had a chocolate filled pastry and his girlfriend had an incredible cinnamon roll. The restaurant is in a lovely space with a Mountain View.

Modern building with a small mall with a few shops and restaurants inside. Grand piano and displays in the center of the ground floor with newspapers to read. There is a gelato, cafe, french restaurant and North Face store.

Good facilities for kids. They had a chair event. But normally it's just a good place to catch your breath and get some delicious beer or icecream

Very artsy interior. There is a breastfeeding room (for only one mother-baby pair at a time) very close to the entrance and can fit your stroller. The restaurants feature the best brands in Nagano prefecture- Clasuwa, Matsumoto Brewery, and Maruyama Coffee to name a few. The terrace on the 3rd floor gave a good view of the Parco intersection. There was also a camping goods and lifestyle store.

This is a very interesting building! There are various areas to explore. On the ground floor, there is an area that serves up wine tastings, various goodies and wine selections that will meet the immediate need. The selection is limited both in what is offered in tastings and what is being sold, though. There are also various foreign goods that can be bought to fill the need with the wine selections. As you go up the escalator, you can find a good number of shops and places to eat at. There is even an open terrace where you can enjoy your meal.

The Matsumoto brewery outlet here has nice views of the city and is open much later into the evening too (10pm). Great especially in the summer with the outdoor seating.

The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum, located in Matsumoto City, is home to a vast and significant collection of ukiyo-e artworks. Many of these pieces are currently on display at a special exhibition hosted by the Matsumoto City Museum. The museum features works by renowned artist Hokusai Katsushika, including famous pieces like The Great Wave Off Kanagawa and Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.
Like many messages said here, this is not a big museum or a big gallery. Many art works were not even the original one. But, the visitors all seemed to enjoy their staying. They paid attention to these paintings quietly. Also, you can find English description in most paintings, covering not only the name of the painting, but also the story of the painting.

This museum is tough to recommend for its normally displayed collection, which is tiny (by tiny, I mean 30 pieces max). It's also not easy to get to, being a 15-20 minute walk from the nearest train station and buses aren't much better. As such, if you're going to visit I recommend seeing what the special collection is that they have on display - their special collections take up their main display room, which is 3x the size of the rest of the museum. If the special collection is not to your taste, I would not recommend visiting. If it is however (or if you have access to a car and can make the journey without depending on the limited public transit options, it is a charming building with a very good gift shop - there are a number of prints done via woodblock techniques if you're looking for one (plus a lot of other ukiyo-e-related gifts that I haven't seen anywhere else in Japan). In the end I'll give it four stars for the quality of their special collection curation, the format shop, and decent AC on a hot day... just be warned it might not tick all of your ukiyo-e boxes.

Excellent little museum with a peerless collection of ukiyo-e prints and a solid gift shop. Good explanatory video running and helpful staff. The pieces in show are low in number due to the size of the gallery and to help conserve them due to light/oil exposure. TIP: transit does not easily get you here without a car. Use Uber or equivalent to get legit taxis to and from!

Very nice museum and the walk from the train station is peaceful and beautiful in itself worth the trip. If you appreciate traditional Japanese art worth a stop. There's a 30 min video supposedly available also in English explaining how wood prints are made, just watching the craftsmanship was super interesting

Small but informative. There's a video covering the process and a little of the history, and then a room with a collection of prints with information in English and Japanese. A shuttle bus runs to and from the area on the alps side of Matsumoto JR station and there are two train lines within walking distance.

The museum looks big from the outside, but it's just one room with maybe 150 or so works. The exhibit is rotated often. If it wasn't for the 500 yen student ticket, I would be a little annoyed at the price.
Max K — Google review
Hard to recommend a visit to this museum: it's quite hard to get to without a car / taxi, and it's deceptively small. The exhibit was interesting, but we felt it lacked displays of the unique & elaborate process & equipment behind Ukiyo-e.
Sam W — Google review
Highly recommended museum visit to enjoy the beautiful woodblock prints on display.
