Ski & Snowboard Areas
Nestled in the breathtaking Japanese Alps, Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort is a winter wonderland that promises an unforgettable experience for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts. With its impressive 297 hectares of ski trails and a vertical drop of 1,086 meters from the summit of Mt. Kenashiyama, this resort offers something for everyone.
Super fun resort with lots to explore! Very beginner friendly as you can take greens all the way down from the new gondola (through rinkai). There’s a lot of flat portions so you might get stuck a couple times if snowboarding. Take the opposite route for the famous skyline route (mostly reds). It also seemed very family friendly with lots of activities for kids!
Akira — Google review
A great ski resort for beginners to intermediate skiers. Slopes are long enough, and there is plenty of beautiful snow and nature. Main downside is the connection between slopes which is not always optimal.

04-Jan-2025 First snowboarding experience ever. Loved it enjoyed every moment there. They have beginner to expert levels and area is quite large. All type of ski lovers can enjoy and learn skiing here. We rented from Solomon located just in way to resort. We rented two snowboard sets (7000yen each for 5hrs). Fell down a-lot and tried many times and hope I got better. The onsen village is also great place to explore near the ski resort. We strolled in evening in our way back. Recommended and definitely going again.

Great Ski/Snowboard resort !!! So much beautiful snow. Many different routes for all levels. Many beautiful ridge trails that have great views. Our trip was mid march and we were lucky as we enjoyed great snow (a week prior to our visit it had been rainy every day, would recommend going sooner in the season or count on your luck).
Marie-Claude P — Google review
We had a magical 5 days ⛷️ on this gorgeous mountain ✨plenty of trails for all levels, well-maintained runs, with plenty of sunshine and the heaviest snowfall. The trails are well-marked with clear signage, and the gondolas and chairlifts make it easy to hop between trails and keep the momentum going. Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced skier, there’s a perfect run for you. There are restaurants up the mountains too - special mention to Buna’s beef udon (absolute comfort in a bowl) and Popeye’s coffee on the Paradise trail - perfect motivation to ski down for me. A huge shoutout to Anthony, our instructor, who was patient, empowering, and made learning so much fun. What makes Nozawa extra special is that it’s owned by the city, not a corporate mega-ski chain, which gives it a unique charm and a welcoming, local feel. Can’t wait to be back!

I've snowboarded all over the East coast of America, Switzerland, Korea, and this is by far the best snow I've been on. It's been amazing here. Added bonus, Snow Monkeys, Onsen, and great food.
John K — Google review
Wonderful ski resort! Traditional onsen town to compliment. Then on mountain food is unreal, all the soloists feel family owned and have incredible food. Didn’t get to ride the new gondola as it was always crowded but was still able to get around without too much crowds. The resort area is very unique and run by the city not corporate mega ski corps and it shows! I really hope this resort stays off the “passes” and keeps its charm.

Nice little ski village for everyone. Ski slopes for experts and beginners alike. Village has many warm, onsen ryokans and traditional local food joints. Options are available for those who would like a drink or two.

Nozawaonsen Sports Park, formerly known as the Hikage slope during summer, offers a variety of exciting activities for visitors. Thrill-seekers can experience the adrenaline rush of a 122-meter high zipline reaching speeds up to 70 kilometers per hour. Additionally, there's an opportunity for summer skiing on a 500-meter artificial slope and a Kids' Park featuring fun activities like a giant trampoline, kids zip-line, and hill tubing.
We were lucky. Beautiful powdery snow. One of the best we snow we’ve seen. Took some class here as well. Need to book 1 day in advance even if its a private class. Available for 2 hours and above. Our instructor Ashley from NZ was lovely and we glad we had her patience in teaching us. Can rent all the gears, jacket, pants etc there too. Its so easy not to carry anything down the hill. Will return

Came up via 2 very long travelators to get to the base to go zip lining in Sept 2025. Familywith 2 adults and 2 kids was 7,000 yen. Was so much fun.

Great place for kids. Can ski to the snow resort. Moving walkway takes you very close to the town centre.
Brett G — Google review
Very beautiful park but unfortunately that when we go there, it was close. Anyway we have a great time building a snow man (our1st time) so it a happy time.

Fantastic ski resort with free, efficient transfers. The day-care centre for toddlers/children is really well run with the most super friendly staff. The price is amazing affordable (5,00 yen for 4.5 hours, 4,000 yen for the second day). It is a godsend for parents with young children. Restaurants, ski rental shops and lift tickets all here and within a minute of the Hikage gondola.

Very nice place for skiing. Food places is also good.
Aloha — Google review
A lovely resort area in the winter and the rest of the year. There is winter skiing and summer skiing. In the green season, there is also a zip line you can ride. Yu Road is a moving walk way that takes you right to this area from the village. There's also a kid area for your kids to bounce around in.
Brittany — Google review
After a long, motorized walkway delivering us to the ski resort entrance, a selection of restaurants and shops reveals in front of us. There are 2 ski/snowboard rental shops to choose from: St. Anton, and 白樺( Not sure what the English name was). St. Anton seems to be the older and more reputable, the other one's (白樺) staff seem to have an ego problem. Shop around before you rent.

The Takano Tatsuyuki Memorial Oborozukiyo-no-yakata Hanzan Bunko Museum offers various attractions across its two floors. On the first floor, visitors can explore an exhibition featuring the works of Dr. Tatsuyuki Takano, as well as a café area and a corner for purchasing products. The second floor is home to a gallery space and a viewing platform that provides breathtaking views of the Hokushin Gogaku region.
The building is beautiful, the staff are lovely, the work presented is wonderful, and I love to see that they're showing local artists work! The stained glass is lovely too, and it was very quiet and peaceful. A lovely quick visit. Also, lots of things like postcards, calenders, etc on sale. Also great views from the room upstairs!!

I had originally wanted to become a Japanese language teacher, so it was a very meaningful time for me. The view from here was spectacular and reminded me of my hometown. Along the way, families and couples with children stopped by, and their children were singing "Spring is here." I'm very happy to be able to watch the show in such a peaceful mood from start to finish! (Translated by Google) I heard that he was the creator of songs such as Furusato, Oborozukiyo, Autumn Leaves, and Spring Has Arrived, but why is this building in Nozawa Onsen, and does it have any connection to this place? My long-held doubts have now been resolved. I have seen stone monuments in Nakano City, but that is the place where he was born, and Nozawa Onsen is where he moved to in his 50s and lived and loved for about 20 years until his death. Looking at the chronology, at the age of 24 he became a teacher at a normal school, and two years later became in charge of singing at the Ministry of Education, and by the time he was 36 years old, he had created a series of songs that were electrifying to many people. Since then, he has advocated and put into practice the need for more research into traditional Japanese music in the field of education, which tends to be dominated by Western music, and until his later years he studied Kabuki and other Japanese poetry. I want to say thank you for that. It is said that children no longer sing hometown songs. They say it's because the poems are too old-fashioned to understand, but that's what makes them interested in the past. I felt that the beauty of Japan, which has been cultivated for a long time, was conveyed through beautiful melodies and songs.

Matsuba-no-yu is conveniently located just 100 meters away from Ogama. The water at this public bath contains beneficial elements such as Glauber's salt, gypsum, and sulfur, known for their potential to alleviate various health issues including hemorrhoids, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, paralysis, and neuralgia. Despite its small size, the bath area feels spacious due to its high ceiling. Additionally, guests can enjoy the fresh outdoor air while bathing indoors.

Really loved this onsen. Only complaint is one of the local women treated me rudely although I followed the rules of onsen strictly. I had already been in there for ten minutes and I had an injured leg. She came in an passive aggressively turned the tap off which I was next to and got angry at me. I assume She thought I was having a shower in the onsen - when I already had by sitting next to the wall and bathing, i was not bathing in the onsen- I was just getting used to the temperature as it was a very cold night. Can make you really uncomfortable when you’re naked and another naked person is critiquing you and bothering you when you cold tired and vulnerable lol are just trying to relax. And another night an Australian woman was loudly yelling to her partner and son on the other side. So basically- loved the onsen, didnt like the company in the onsen. Not very foreigner friendly and I get that- but I am very respectable person. Maybe yell at the loud Aussie lady.

Even less hot than Kumanotearayu (an onsen already considered less scalding than most in the town). Not hot enough in my opinion but may be suitable for those who want something warm rather than hot.

Four words: free, hot and relaxing. Lovely for an early morning soak or/ and after an afternoon snowboarding... or whatever exercise brings you to Nozawa Onsen. These smaller onsen are always worth experiencing, mix it in with one of the paid options and you will undoubtedly increase your experience of the town.

Nozawa Onsen Distillery is a must-visit for gin and craft spirits enthusiasts. The distillery's award-winning gin, crafted with locally sourced ingredients and Nozawa Onsen's renowned spring water, offers a delightful taste of Japan. Visitors praise the friendly staff and the beautiful setting of the distillery. While some suggest adding comfortable seating and mixers for the strong gins, many are eager to return to try their whiskey and explore more of their offerings.
Best Gin in the world. We tried it in Tokyo and had to make the trip to Nozawaonsen to see where it originated. We did a great tasting. the bartender was very knowledgeable and answered all the questions we had. We learned the process and history of this Gin. We were extremely lucky and bought one of their last barrel aged bottle along with our favorites ones:) If you are in the region, make a detour and go visit the distillery. + the place is beautiful!

Gin distillery. There is a bar here where you can get a gin flight showcasing the four main gins that the distillery produces as well as gin cocktails using Nozawa gin. The staff are friendly and happy to chat. There is a gift shop selling branded Nozawa gin products as well as the gin itself.

Yu Road

Scenic spot
Yu Road is a convenient and free moving walkway that links the hot spring village to the Hikage base area, serving as the primary ski slope in town during winter. Surprisingly, it remains operational in summer, offering access to skiing and snowboarding on the Zip Skyline and summer slopes. This lengthy travellator not only facilitates transportation but also provides an enjoyable activity for children. It's monitored for safety and allows easy transport of ski or snowboard equipment.
Very nice view at the bottom of YU road, Is quite a steep slope to walk up but once read the escalator can rest your feet and it will just bring you up. The moment you step out from the escalator is the ski school, rental place, service center, kids park, snow mobile pick up point, cafe and restaurant. It so convenient.

Moving escalator that gets you up to the other side of the ski slopes. Not difficult to find on foot, just follow the signs. My husband and I tried to drive here following google map directions and found ourselves navigating really narrow roads and there was nowhere to park. We ended up having to leave our car back at the hotel and walk here. Better to come on foot. Also due to the shape of the tunnel, watch your skis when using the escalator! Best of all it’s free.

Thank goodness for this free travellator to bring people up to the ski area. Saves the climb up. A nice 2 stage escalator that is quite an engineering feat. There are staff and cameras monitoring the travellator to ensure everyone’s safety. No probs getting ski or snow board equipment on it. Come down near sun set and be rewarded with stunning views at the bottom of Yu road.

78 Cafe - Nappa Cafe is a charming and cozy spot located at the top of town, offering a delightful selection of light meals, set-menu lunches, cakes, coffees, and other desserts. The cafe also features an ashi-yu (foot bath) right outside for guests to enjoy. Run by a dedicated husband and wife team, Jun-San and Naoko-San, this cafe prides itself on its warm service and consistently good food.
What a great spot for lunch the lunch sets they have are amazing! The bake curry is something I would go back for it was so good. Also got the ice cream match Sunday highly recommended getting one of these. They have different flavours as well so depending on what you like. Really cozy spot in Nozawaonsen.

We stopped here for lunch & coffee today, and everything was delicious! Would definitely recommend, and we will be back again too! Open all year around!

This was an excellent experience! I loved how much cat stuff there was. There were cat magazines and books and stuff, and I was looking at a phrase book with photos of cats, which was helping me with my kanji practice... The atmosphere was just absolutely lovely, and the service was nice too. I had an ontama curry and cafe latte, both of which were brilliant. The curry had a very unique flavour, and a bit of a kick without being spicy. It also came with soup, which was nice too. The coffee has a very soft texture and a taste which was the perfect middle, not too strong, not too weak. Great place, would recommend!

A delightful, heartwarming cafe in Nozawa Onsen serving some very good baked curry rice with cheese & egg. We also enjoyed their affogato. Vibrant ambiance and very courteous service. A pleasant culinary memory to take back with us to Hawaii!

Lovely Cafe. I find espresso based coffees ( latte, flat white etc) very hit and miss in Japan. So I was especially happy when the latte i ordered tasted delicious. The drip coffee, as well as the baked curry were also nice. The apple cheesecake was so-so.

Baked curry goodness... So good 😍🍛 Light but delicious soft onsen egg wjth pickled vegetables and rice, hojicha lattes, orange peel chocolate cake and coconut banana cake. Love the cozy interior and the staff are so nice and welcoming.

Absolutely delicious baked Japanese curry! One of the tastiest meals I’ve had in Japan! Thoughtfully decorated and very clean and cosy cafe. Cute inside and outside with lots of detail and thought. Fabulous collection of vintage Japanese toys, books and great old photos of local area. Simple small menu but would recommend coming here for lunch in Nozawa Onsen!

There was much to look at in this small cozy cafe. V cute place decorated with old toys of the owner and pictures of Nozawa back in the days - like a mini museum. Drinks options were good with several adult friendly options e.g. hot choc with alcohol).

Genki Burger is a compact and relaxed eatery that offers a unique blend of Japanese-Australian fusion burgers, along with various side dishes. The burgers are exceptionally tasty and generously portioned, albeit on the expensive side. The fries have a slightly high salt content but are enjoyable nonetheless. The drink selection is extensive, with the standout being their must-try lemonade. The pleasant staff member single-handedly prepares the food, adding to the cozy atmosphere of this small yet lively establishment.
We had the Umami San burger, 10/10. It was delicious with lots of flavor. The fire fries weren’t anything special. The place is real small but good service

If you're craving a standard burger along with all the grease and carbs and fat (I mean all of this in a good/ delicious way), then this place is for you. I can see its appeal after a day on the slopes and you just want to satisfy that carb craving. For a burger, it's pretty solidly average. But for a burger on the mountain after a solid day of skiing, it's great. Food takes a while after ordering since they cook the burger fresh. Shop is tiny with a few seats so it might be better to order takeout. Service is great and the guys who run the shop are super friendly.

If you are a little sick of Japanese food, you should really try out this burger place ! The beef patty was amazingly good. I had the YAMABIKO B (DELUXE). Also you need to try the fries. No reservation allow and the place is very small so limited seats.

Nice burger joint jn nozawa. Stumbled across it as we needed something about quick. Guys were prompt in service and atmosphere cosy. Warm and inviting. Burgers pretty good as well. Better than i had expected and worth the rating. We had the yami A and yami B.

We came here for dinner tonight and this place did not disappoint. We ordered the one Genki and Abunai each and they were delicious in their own way with very different flavors. We also ordered a original Loaded Fries and they were delicious and quite filling. The wait time is what it is because these burgers are cooked to order so we were happy to wait. The place is cozy, but there is enough seating and the dinner crowd quickly filled the space. I thought the price was quite reasonable for the freshness and the quality. You get what you pay for. I recommend this for anyone looking for a top notch burger while they’re here and I would revisit again. Also, they have a hot sauce available to try that I haven’t seen before and it has a real kick which mixed nicely to the ketchup.

Nice delicious burger 🍔. We ordered no.1 and 4 from the menu list. No.4 is very delicious, it come with egg and nozawa veg pickles. Limited seat in the small shop, but the burger is delicious, worth the wait.

Genki Burger is defined one of the best burger spot in Japan! We visit every time we are in the area—it never gets old. We love the loaded hot fries—served with chopped up jalapeños. I always go for the veggie burgers. They’re all delicious, but the lotus and fried tofu edge out the mushroom for me. Highly recommend this if you’re in the area.

Convenient little shop with a burger menu where each item is named after the pistes of the snow resort. It's nothing amazing, the burgers rely on sauce to be tasty, so when no sauce is used it's really quite average. The staff are helpful and attentive, it's not a bad restaurant, it has a comfy sort of feel.

The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and affordable prices starting at 830 yen. It's easily recognizable by the giant A-shaped frame on its facade. The place is popular with locals and offers a wide variety of tasty food.
We’ve been here 3 times now. Every time has been amazing. The food is beautifully made and the staff are so lovely. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area for lunch or dinner. It does get busy, but they do takeaway as well. Thank you Wakagiri! We will be back one day!

If the manager/owner tells you wait 30 minutes to get a table, tell him to forget it. We ate here once and the food was not bad. We returned a couple of times but were told it is closed - you might as well have dinner 4:30pm since they close so early. The fact that it’s barely open during high season of Nozawa, by 7:30pm they won’t accept clients and the attitude of the manager, we will not return. Best of luck when it’s not high season. You can find alternatives nearby.

Walked in for dinner at opening at 5pm. A few of us were escorted immediately to tables with limit of 1 hour. Excellent sushi bowl! We will return with friends ( & be sure to make reservations!) Kind and Welcoming staff!!

It was a cold day so it was lovely to go in for a bowl of soba, and it was good soba too. Very strong flavours, very tasty. A little pricy compared to what we're used to in Tokyo but worth it. Service was very nice, though I do wish they didn't change all the settings into English as soon as they saw us... I know it's polite since there are a lot of overseas tourists here but it feels a little insulting, we live in this country, and that gets tiring...

My favorite place to eat in Nozawa. The food is great and the staff super friendly. The sushi is fresh and rich, the miso really good and different. It's hard to get a spot to book in advance
Andres B — Google review
The tuna melted in my mouth in a way that tuna has never done before. I ordered the soba combo - the flavors of the broth and noodles were great but I was wonderfully surprised by the quality of the nigiri. Egg was also cooked to perfection. I thought about how much I would miss this meal, while I was still eating the meal. A lovely cozy spot with highly attentive service. They turn groups away if there’s a short queue so try to time your visit well :)

Seems like a popular restaurant and hard to book. Best to call one week in advance to reserve a table. To my surprise, the restaurant was not busy at all after the first round of diners left at 7-ish in the evening. Food was fine but nothing special. Foreigner friendly as you order using a tablet (there is an English menu with photos), cups and water are also self service, no need to speak Japanese.

Review based on the restaurant. With a fully booked sign hanged on the window, it is no wonder why it has been so highly recommended and in popularity. Lovely traditional Japanese food! Every dish was excellent. We especially loved the Yakitori and Grilled Yellow Tail. The Octopus sashimi was also incredibly fresh and cooked perfectly. So so good!

This lovely izakaya is situated in the first floor basement just under the heart of Nozawa Onsen. Everything i ate was delicious and freshly made , and presented with care. The staff were very attentive and friendly. I can easily recommend this as a place to have food and drinks for the night. I didn't rate the atmosphere 5 stars in my review as it happened to be empty at the time , however, that may be because I came on a rainy December day when the ski fields were closed.

Great paced meal - lovely service. Beautifully curated sake specials. The smelt, grilled onigiri, pickles, sashimi, meatballs, chicken yakitori, all just so great. Definitely make a reservation and you can eat and drink slowly and totally enjoy. In a basement but with more seating than anticipated. A really fun and super delicious experience. The butter corn and butter potato were SO good. Ate and drank a lot - 13100 JPY for two of us. Oh and tons of lemon sours were had!

Decent Izakaya at Tsukushinbo Nozawaonsen. A bit more sophisticated than Sakai but still decent pricing. Check out the Grilled Atka Mackerel…

Incredible food in a nondescript location. The Yellowtail was simply one of the best things I ate the entire trip to Japan. Overall a bit too pricey but about half the dishes were well worth it. The French chef behind the bar was very helpful and we enjoyed our conversations with him. This spot is popular with locals and now getting very popular with tourists so best to book a few days ahead.

Good izakaya tucked away in the basement. Our fav dish was the hokke which was perfectly cooked it was almost buttery!

Definitely get a reservation. We showed up around 830 and had luck getting a table after waiting for a bit, but I think we just lucked out. Popping place with a fantastic specials list, delicious food, and great sake list. We over ordered and ate it all. We will definitely go back, our server Yugi was a bad ass with great recommendations. Some things we ordered: octopus Wasabi, chicken skewers, stick cheese, puffer fish skin, all sorts of shashimi, fried chicken, rice balls. Sadly, I didn't get a single photo.. we were enthralled and enjoying too much

Sparena is a popular hot spring destination in Nozawa Onsen, offering a relaxing experience for visitors. The facility provides free parking and features a reasonably priced hot spring pool. Additionally, there are spacious lounges and the option to rent swimsuits. Families can enjoy the 25 outdoor pool during the summer, with ample parking available even on weekdays. Visitors are required to remove their shoes upon entering the building and can rent swimsuits for a fee.
The indoor changing room has a anti slip rubber mat that is painful to walk on barefooted. The indoor changing room's anti-slip rubber mat, though effective, can be a bit uncomfortable barefooted. Visiting on a weekday was a win – almost empty pools made it especially enjoyable for the kids. The hot pool added warmth as the night got colder. The outdoor onsen, with its great view, was an additional highlight.
Mama Y — Google review
Take your lift pass to get a discount! Quite expensive for what you get...maybe better value in the summer when outdoors is open too. Only choice really if with kids as (as a visitor) the village onsens would be too hot for the kids...so it is better than nothing so we could all have an onsen together.
J C — Google review
The nice outdoor pool is basically useless because it's closed for half of summer . Opens for 6 weeks and then shuts, what is the point of having a pool that's closed for half of the summer? Then for some reason there is a semi-enclosed pool that is 36c...in summer, what on earth is the point of having a pool that hot, don't people swim to cool off? Make both pools a bit cooler and use the money you will save on heating to stay open longer?
A M — Google review
Very warm hot springs, very kind service. The floor inside is very rough so I'd recommend bringing flip flops. They rent their swimsuits but it's Japanese sizes so their largest is not that large at all.
Pri B — Google review
Fantastic option for families in the summer. Ample parking, not crowded at all during the weekdays, and the 25° outdoor pool is a respite from the summer heat. When you enter the building, take your shoes off and put them in a locker. Bring your shoe locker key to the front desk when you pay and they will keep it for you. Adults (junior high school and above ¥700, children ¥500). They will then hand you a locker key. Lost locker keys will be charged ¥3000. Bathing suit rentals are ¥300 with a ¥1000 deposit that is returned when the bathing suit is returned. The changing room has bathing facilities with soaps, showers to wash off after the pool, and even a free swimsuit drier which works much like a salad spinner except for bathing suits. There is a restaurant connected to the pool area -- just need to dry off before heading in to eat. A nice option for those that want to stay the whole day. Unusual for Japan: no swim cap needed, diapered children can swim as long as they use a waterproof cover, and we even saw a young shirtless with several large tattoos, so maybe a tattoo-friendly facility?!? Cafeteria takes only cash or Paypay. Summer hours (8/1-8/27) are 9:00-20:30.

Great onsen if you’re shy to get naked. Swimsuit allowed in 2 of the baths. Good food in the cafeteria.
Viraf P — Google review
Most of Nozawa Onsen's public baths follow the traditional style that most tourists wouldn't be used to. SPArena follows the more modern style found in other cities, with a dedicated bathing area. There are also mixed bath areas where a bathing suit is required.

Like other outdoor baths, it was very piping hot, but I managed to get it in without adding more water. It's been a year since I've been to an outdoor bath at Nozawa Onsen, but the moment I soaked it up to my shoulders, “Ah, I came to Nozawa Onsen.” I was able to realize that. It's strange to me that even though I don't like hot baths, Nozawa Onsen is my favorite, but I think it's such a special place. I would recommend going there at around 4pm for a quieter meal and no queues, but expect a 30 minute wait if you go there at noon.

In the charming town of Nozawa Onsen, Ogama stands out as one of the 30 natural hot springs. This outdoor onsen is a certified national natural monument and is known for its nearly 100-degree hot water that bubbles up from deep underground. Surrounded by shrines, this historic site also features a market where locals cook vegetables and eggs in the scalding water. Visitors can sample these delicacies while enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
Beautiful town with onsen , the market next street will cooking there vegetables, eggs at the onsen water . Try some they just so sweet and delicious.

Not much to see but a spot where locals can use the hot springs to cook or wash, non-locals not allowed to enter, it was quite messy when I went with planks and other stuff everywhere, probably renovation work after the winter. Saw one local in the morning, otherwise very quiet.
Helena W — Google review
Cool open hot spring at the top of a hill in the village. Only locals are allowed to use the spring, as it’s so hot that it’d burn the uninitiated , but it’s a beautiful sight nonetheless.

Ogama is an outdoor hot spring which is surrounded by shrines, set in a beautiful, historic corner of Nozawa Onsen. This onsen is so hot (90℃), locals use it to cook vegetables and eggs. You can try some of this food in the market next to the onsen. There is also a large foot onsen around the corner (summer only). If you head down the hill from Ogama, you will see some of the most beautiful Ryokan accommodation and gardens in Nozawa Onsen.

The Japan Ski Museum offers a captivating journey through the history of skiing and winter sports in Japan. Visitors can explore a rich collection of memorabilia from various Winter Olympics, including the challenges and successes of hosting the 1972 Sapporo and 1998 Nagano games. The museum showcases original skis and poles, as well as various contraptions used for snow activities. It also highlights the development of Nozawaonsen from an onsen village to a world-class ski resort.
This is a fascinating look at history of skiing in Japan. This small but beautifully maintained museum was a pleasure to see and I enjoyed the exhibits and entertaining videos. Great value for money about $3 Australian entry fee.
Teresa M — Google review
There was way more here than we expected, so it was absolutely worth the price. We learned a lot, about local nature as well as Hannes Scneider and Olympic history and there were some interactive things which were good fun!! We had just gone on a walk up the hill... it was raining and we didn't know what was up there, we just wanted to go on an adventure, so it was a lucky find, especially since everything else in the area was closed. No one else was there so they turned on lights and heating just for us... the good thing about visiting in off season!
Hercules W — Google review
Shows a good history of Japanese skiing. Interesting display of original skis and poles. Worthwhile visiting if skiing isn't an attractive option on an inclement day or possibly at the end of the day's skiing.

Good enough for the price, worth a visit if you're not skiing.

Winterland Lodge & Taproom is a charming boutique hotel that offers simple accommodations with bunk beds. The establishment features a restaurant and bar, making it an ideal place to enjoy drinks and snacks upon arrival in Nozawa. The menu boasts a wide selection of beverages, including cider and hard seltzer. The sake served at Winterland Lodge & Taproom is particularly impressive.
Winterland is just steps away from Nozawa Onsen central bus terminal. On the second floor is the bar. They have a good range of craft beers and a great gyoza menu as well as other food. Go for happy hour. Staff speak English. Didn't stay, bar only.
Judy O — Google review
Food is great! If you love gyozas and craft beers, this is the place to be. We are back every season and will visit this place at least once.
Jonathan L — Google review
Winterland is across from Nozawa Chuo bus terminal. It is advisable to make bookings during busy periods as it gets crowded at the Taproom. The gyozas were delicious and perfectly cooked. Our daughter really enjoyed the mini kids room away from the bar. Great place to down ales or sours on a cold night in Nozawa.
PatS579 — Google review
Only discovered Winterland on our second last day in Nozawaonsen and wish we had found it earlier! The staff are absolute legends. Forget Shibuya crossing, sitting at the Winterland window eating sensational gyoza, drinking a beer, and watching the one traffic light crossing in Nozawaonsen as the snow falls is a bucket list experience in Japan. The happy hour deals are worth getting off the slopes for!

Great chicken ! Super shizo gyozas ! Definitely a great place for a drink with friends after a day of riding on the mountains !! Staff is friendly and super efficient ! Go and go back !
Plascaz — Google review
We loved our meal here. The toddler space was fantastic for our little one, as was the fact that we could book online. We had various gyoza, salt and pepper squid and taco rice - all of it was excellent. Tap beers were great too! Staff were friendly and efficient. Highlight for me was the dessert gyoza, I will dream about that for a while I think.
Nikki W — Google review
Was really looking forward to some Japanese craft beers but this place really disappointed. Staff were so rude, and 10 gyoza took over 50 mins with only one other table of people in the venue. I reckon they forgot our order. They decided to cook their own lunch rather than cook our order even after we asked about it. None of the cooks were Japanese and the gyoza tasted like they’d come from a supermarket frozen pack. Go anywhere else that’s open.
Adam D — Google review
Came here for beers and gyoza on the recommendation of a friend. Really wanted to love this spot, but unfortunately came away disappointed because our gyoza came out at room temperature. Nothing sadder than biting into a lukewarm gyoza. Five stars for service though— waiter instantly offered to remake cold ones and took one plate off the bill. Unfortunately, the second time around the gyoza were still not hot enough inside. Really perplexing, since the outside looked good. I believe these are frozen gyoza and they didn’t have enough time to defrost and steam before being seared. Really quite disappointing for a place where gyoza is supposed to be the star of the menu. Otherwise, good beers and great service.

Restaurant
Gochisou Pizza Bar, conveniently located near Nozawa View Hotel Shimataya, has quickly gained a strong reputation since its opening at the close of 2018. The trendy atmosphere features warm wooden decor and vintage-inspired lightbulbs, housing a wood-fired oven that not only warms visitors after a day on the slopes but also cooks an array of delicious pizzas.
100% spot on the money! Pizza - sensational. Up there with any good thin base, puffy crust Italian pizza! My tip - Add blue cheese and rocket, the best!! Beers - go large, and then repeat. Mixed olives good also. Couple of spaces for a game of darts, maybe before the beers!! Team are great. Friendly, happy to accommodate. This was a second time this week, needed a break from ramen after two weeks!!

The pizzas are good but be prepared to smell like oil after leaving the place. My fav pizza is the ramen pizza and I love the crispy squid. It's a must order! Definitely worth trying when you are staying at nozawaonsen!

This is great pizza. Last month we had pizza marumo in Tokyo which was named top 10 in the world. This is the same level. Staff was all really awesome as well. Only wish they were open for lunch too.

Went here specifically for the Ramen Pizza and it did not disappoint. Very unique and cool flavour and the sauces they had for dipping were a nice pairing
Mark P — Google review
Superb pizzas! The owner said they ferment their dough for 3 days, probably why the crust was so delicious. Fantastic creative toppings - the cauliflower, blue cheese, and pine nut pizza was outstanding. The salmon and winter greens salad was also excellent. Wine list is well chosen and good value. Great vibe, great food.
Dave P — Google review
This was our best meal in Nozawa Onsen! They have plenty of vegetarian pizzas on their menu. Option for vegan cheese too. We had the Kinoko and Nasu pizza, both vegetarian pizzas. We really enjoyed the Nasu pizza which had a Japanese twist to it. The spring onions on that pizza 👌🏽. Loved the crust and crust dips! Be sure to come really early (we came at 4:50pm before opening) or make a reservation, to not be disappointed.

Delicious pizzas! Would highly recommend if you’re after decent pizza. Better pizza than back home in Australia. Great atmosphere.

Great restaurant in Nozawa! We went here twice during our stay. The pizzas are excellent - we tried quite a few but our favorite was the pepperoni. We did the set meal through our hotel. We loved the limoncello when we arrived! Service was excellent -t he staff were so kind and accommodating. The cocktails were great as well - my favorite was the Panama. Definitely recommend!

Izakaya restaurant
Minato, an exceptional izakaya in Nozawa, stands out for its delightful ambiance and attentive service. The proprietor, a pleasant and adorable lady/boss, personally handles orders and food service. Although the impact of COVID-19 has led to diminished patronage, fortunate visitors can engage in enjoyable conversations with her. Conveniently located near Furusato no Yu, Minato offers exquisitely fresh seafood sourced from Nagano and the surrounding Japanese sea region.
The food was exceptional! We enjoyed the atmosphere of this little traditional restaurant. The reservation process was easy to call and the service direct! The traditional sake warming machine was very cool and the open fire place at one of the tables made for a unique atmosphere.. The English menu might be simplified from the wooden panels in Japanese on the wall.
Lilka D — Google review
Minato is everything you want in a classic izakaya - cozy tatami vibes, great sake, and seriously good food. The crispy fried tofu, fresh juicy sashimi that sliced just right, the yakiniku chicken and seafood pot - all absolute comfort food after a long day of ski. The lady boss is so cool she’s almost intimidating - but in a way that makes you respect the place even more. Call ahead for a booking, bring cash and an empty stomach.

We got a table luckily without a reservation at 6:30pm. Love the fried tofu, fried shrimp, and other dishes were good.
Sansiri K — Google review
Amazing food and it comes out quick. A good variety of different Japanese foods to try. However the drinks are overpriced and under-poured. I ordered a Coca-Cola for 400 yen and I saw the waitress pour half a small bottle into a glass filled with ice and she didn’t fill it to the top either.
Cara N — Google review
Amazing food and atmosphere. Nice and quiet. BBQ chicken, sashimi platter and miso hot pot were amazing. We recommend booking early to get a spot.

My favourite izakaya in nozawaonsen, you would need to make reservations during ski season. Everything we ordered was delicious and the shirako and sashimi was splendid - can’t be missed. Food and drink was well-priced. Highly recommend Minato for one of your dinners in nozawa!
Jillian W — Google review
The best Izakaya in Nozawa! The lady/boss takes orders and serves food by herself. She is so lovely and cute. As it was empty due to covid, it was sad but we were lucky we could have a good conversation with her! It's right in front of Furusato no Yu. The seafood is amazingly fresh and the quality of meat are amazing too. It's sooooooo tasty. They're getting the best ingredients from Nagano and the Japanese sea area. Ok the menu is not so much but it looks only one or two people were working in the kitchen. We went twice during our stay and we will definitely come back!
Minami Y — Google review
Small izakaya. One lady boss/server. They have tables sitting on the floor, bar counter seating and one table with a pot in the middle. There was quite a number of locals inside. Again, we ordered almost everything on the menu, except the horse sashimi and the hot pot. For 4 pax, our bill was ¥11,000.

Location was perfect being ski-in-out location right near chairlifts and near the end of a few runs. We elected half board and the food was delicious. Having a kids play area was a bonus when our kids needed a break or while they waited for the adults to finish up dinner. An on-site onsen and outdoor jacuzzi was amazing after a long day out. Onsite rentals with quality gear was great. Courteous and friendly staff who go out of their way to assist, especially the owner, made the whole experience enjoyable. Will be back again!

Tomiki Pickles Factory Direct Sales Shop, birthplace of Nozawana, is a must-visit destination for pickle enthusiasts. The shop offers a variety of fresh produce and baked goods alongside the famous Nozawana pickles. These pickles are highly sought after and rarely found outside Nagano. Visitors can enjoy the convenience of purchasing these delicious pickles at affordable prices without having to pickle them at home.
(Translated by Google) I took a detour when heading to Niigata. ⭐︎There was a comment of 1, but it's not particularly expensive. The staff at the store were also kind. Pickling vegetables reduces bulk considerably and takes a lot of effort, so I think it's actually cheaper at this price point. Regarding Kanjin pickles, I bought Nozawana pickles and apple butter. The pickled Nozawana tasted like it was pickled in salt and tasted better after a while. The apple butter was rich and delicious when I spread it on toast. (Translated by Google) I actually wanted to go there and buy some, but since I don't ski or snowboard, I don't have any business to go to Nozawa Onsen, so I bought some pickles online. It was delicious. In the first place, my local supermarket was selling Nozawana pickled products in collaboration with a local pickle shop, so I was interested in that shop, so I searched and found this shop. I looked at this restaurant's website and asked for the tortoiseshell-colored Nozawana, which is only available during the winter season. The lactic acid-fermented tortoiseshell-colored Nozawana that is eaten locally is delicious and has a good reputation among my family, so it is only available during the winter season. I re-ordered it inside. Actually, I'd like to order it in a barrel, but my region doesn't get cold so it's difficult considering the quality of the pickles. So, I thought of it as a winter treat and ordered some pickles from here.

Nestled within the charming Akari House rental apartments, Akari House Swiss Bakery is a delightful spot that brings a taste of Switzerland to Nozawa Onsen. Here, you’ll find Stephan, a skilled Swiss baker who crafts an enticing array of pastries, quiches, cakes, and breads throughout the day. The cozy atmosphere invites guests to savor these treats on-site or take them away.
We ate here be had calzones, pretzels, and took some sweets home, and also ordered pizza another day. All the food is absolutely divine, coffee was awesome, as an Aussie in Japan sometimes finding a good coffee can be difficult. The location is lovely and close to many accommodation and just down from a ski lift. The inside is set up so cute, but the real treasure are the treats on display! The delivered pizza, calzones, pretzels, and baked sweets were all 5/5 excellent and delicious. Thanks Akari, we will be back next time.

3rd season we went to Akari for breakfast or dinner (~10times in total). Tasty food and pizzas, and good quality for the price. The place is cozy and really good if you want to relax. The staff is really friendly and welcoming !

Fantastic sleeping with the windows open as you can hear the water running through the village. Very peaceful setting.

We ordered take away and I got the order wrong. Instead of just leaving it, the staff identified the issue and contacted me via WhatsApp — amazing service! The pizzas are great. We ordered six to our Karaoke place and they were well received by everyone. Very nice pizza.

Incredible service, location and hosts. Gab (the owner) assisted us immensely when our kids got sick and was so helpful when we needed to get to hospital. Location is so convenient to both the snow and the rest of town. Don’t get me started on the food options. So so great!

I was a local on Nozawa Onsen over the winter and went to Akari numerous times. Love their breakfast and pastries ❣️ In Spring they have a small patio and you can have drinks outside, perfect spot for a sunset. Highly recommended!

We popped in for a last minute dinner here and luckily secured a table for two. Would recommend booking if you have a larger group as the restaurant is on the smaller side. We shared a pizza and dessert and it did not disappoint. The cheesecake was top tier, I wish I took one home. The dessert options were amazing! Pizza was also yummy. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Great place!!

Restaurant
Rest house Yamabiko is a prominent dining establishment in the Nozawaonsen Ski Resort, conveniently situated near the Nagasaka gondola top station. It offers an extensive and delectable array of food and beverages, as expected in a bustling ski resort setting. This eatery serves as an ideal venue to indulge in a satisfying curry and beer after exerting oneself on the Kenashi slopes. Particularly noteworthy is their superb vegetable curry (#7 if memory serves), which is truly exceptional.
Quite literally the best food I have ever had on a mountain. One plate of melt in your mouth steak, 3 plates of ramen, a sake, and a lemonade all for just 30 pounds!

First time trying nozawana on top of pizza and omg it works so well definitely recommend it!!!

I haven’t tried everything on the menu here, but I tend to stick with my favorites—and honestly, they never disappoint. Every visit leaves me with a smile. The hearty Nozawana dish with pork and cheese hits the spot, especially after a few hours out in the snow. It's warm, comforting, and full of flavor. The French Toast? Absolute perfection. Light, fluffy, and just the right amount of indulgent—it’s almost too good to share (Don’t!). Pro tip: get there early. This place fills up fast, and for good reason.

The staff or administration does absolutely nothing against the seat-saving culture that plagues this place. I had a plate of food purchased and walked around for 20 minutes like an idiot looking for a table. Tables that I could have sat down to eat my food were being "reserved" by other people who haven't even ordered food yet. So you'll find many tables full of ski gear but otherwise vacant. Customers already with food should have priority, not the other way around. I ended up putting away my plate of UNTOUCHED food on the dishwashing racks.

Delicious garlic rice and curry dishes. Plus, some great views of the slopes.

Great cheap place for food on the slope. Does get quite packed around 12:30

One of the “flagship” eateries in Nozawaonsen Ski Resort, located nearby Nagasaka gondola top station. Tasty, broad selection of food and drinks, crowded as expected on a ski resort.
Eugene F — Google review
This place just keeps getting better over the years. With the new gondola station, the first floor has been converted to a large seating area and pizza is served on the first floor while everything else is available on the second floor. Seating used to be a problem during lunch time but with expanded seating it’s much better now. The food is delicious but if you had to try one thing, go for the garlic steak rice. It’s the most popular item for good reason.
