Shopping mall
Shopping
Nestled in a picturesque setting, Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza is a sprawling complex featuring high-end designer outlets, charming cafes, and delectable restaurants. Boasting over 200 shops across its West, Central, and East sections, this open-air shopping mall offers an exhilarating retail experience akin to an amusement park. Visitors can explore a diverse range of stores offering fashion items, accessories, interior design pieces, and gourmet dining options.
A great spot for a relaxed day of shopping. Set against the scenic backdrop of Karuizawa’s mountains, the open-air layout and beautiful surroundings make it feel more like a leisurely park stroll than a typical mall visit. With over 200 stores, there’s a mix of high-end brands, casual wear, and local specialty shops, so there’s something for everyone. The plaza is conveniently located just a short walk from Karuizawa Station, making it easily accessible. The wide walkways, greenery, and even a pond in the middle create a super chill atmosphere. If you’re traveling with kids, there’s a play area that’s actually fun. And if you’re lucky, you might catch some great discounts, especially if you time your visit right. Visited in May and there was foggy climate and frost which add the cozy ambience. Overall, it’s a pleasant place to spend a few hours, whether you’re in the mood for shopping or just want to enjoy the relaxed vibe.

Gigantic open air outlet mall with a lot of foreign brands, from Armani to Speedo's. The large outlet malls in the US and the rest of the world could learn a thing or two about making a pleasant shopping environment that doesn't feel like a crush. It's also very accessible, a short stroll across a custom built bridge from the shinkansen station for Kamikura, and catering to foreign shoppers with tax free signs everywhere. We were there during a quiet weekday, but it's obviously geared up to have tens of thousands of visitors if the car parks are anything to go by. Sandwiched between the two big Prince hotels, the space seems to be owned by Prince and the Seibu group, so it's advantagous if you're a member of their programs. In fact, Prince seems to have a monopoly on the whole area from the micro-ski area, two hotels, kids playgrounds, and the outlet center. There are nice green areas and multiple food areas. It seems to partcularly cater to dog lovers since there are dog runs, pet stores, and pet corners with water everywhere. Parking is super cheap if you buy something and get a QR code voucher. It's a lot of walking to cover the whole area, but you can't drive from one area to another without paying for the parking, so beware of that. If this was the US they'd have mobility scooters to rent. Very popular with Chinese shopping tourists, perhaps on bus tours. Less so with western tourists. The deals were variable. We were there co-inciding with Black Friday and there seemed to be some good deals, while other stores were high street prices.
Douglas A — Google review
A massive semi outdoor outlet in terms of the number of shops and also floor space. You'd easily spend half a day here just walking around. It's so big they even have several food courts all over the place, with many unique and tasty food at reasonable prices. Have fun hunting for deals on your favorite brand here. Located within a walking distance of less than 5 minutes from JR Karuizawa Station, just take the south exit.
Bayu U — Google review
Lots of shopping opportunities. High end fashion and accessories shops available. Carpark was free for first 2h, thereafter ¥100 per hour except purchase over ¥30,000. Remember to ask for QR code to show proof of purchase. Complete payment via machine before picking up the car and exit.
Martlet — Google review
This out was massively big… so far the best outlet I have been. Comparable to Gotemba outlet. Nice park and pet friendly.
Ivan T — Google review
I don't generally enjoy shopping, but this is maybe my favorite shopping center I've ever visited. Beautiful views, breezes, and shops offering great value for money, plus a calm atmosphere and dog park.
K W — Google review
The outlet is located right next to the Shinkansen station, very accessible, and they have most of the brands that could definitely satisfy everyone! Some of the shops have really good deals and special editions. I realise one change is that some shops are offering bigger discounts instead of tax free.
Melisa W — Google review
A huge complex of shops carrying a dizzying and complex quantity of overseas goods. Some are on sales some are not. With multiple coffee shops and restaurants one can easily spend days walking around these shops looking for bargains or just window shopping. First things first! Get acquainted with the lay of the land and find a map of the complex. Know what you are looking for or you’ll waste your opportunity.

Karuizawa Prince Hotel Snow Resort

4.0

Ski resort
Karuizawa Princehotel Snow Resort is a modern ski resort located in Nagano Prefecture, known for its upmarket mountain setting at the foot of Mt. Asama. The resort offers 10 courses catering to all skill levels, with 5 beginner, 2 intermediate, and 3 advanced options. Visitors can enjoy skiing lessons, a terrain park, and equipment rental facilities.
A perfect place for ski lovers! The ski-in, ski-out access is extremely convenient, making it easy to hit the slopes right away. The facilities are well-equipped and sufficient for the number of guests staying at the resort. The only downside is that the rooms feel a bit outdated, and the shared bathrooms could be cleaner. However, everything else—from the location to the overall experience—was excellent. If you’re looking for a great ski resort with easy access to the slopes, this is a solid choice!
Pornpong W — Google review
We came to the ski resort in early January, the weather is cold with sun shine🌞, so the snow is not powdery, some skiing routes are too icy for the skiers.🧊 Moreover, the lift ticket and rental in the ski resort is relatively high compare to other ski resorts in japan.💸 Recommend to do rental nearby the North Exit of the train station🚄 which is half-price of that of in the ski resort. Overall, the experience is not bad, having fun in the all levels of ski routes, and here is the nearest place from Tokyo for skiing. Btw, this place has NO night-ski in this winter season.🏂
Aaron — Google review
We’re only here for site seeing and glad that we can do that but riding the lift for just 2000+ yen and enjoy the beautiful mountain. This is our first snow experience as well so amazing. Hoping to be back next time to do skiii or snowboarding 😊 Feb, 22, 2025

We spent a winter day at the Karuizawa Snow Park (part of Prince Snow Resort), and it turned out to be a perfect fit for our toddlers and beginner-friendly for adults too. The Snow Park area is well-designed for families, with a fun sledding and tubing hill that our kids couldn’t get enough of, and a dedicated snow play zone filled with toys, soft mounds, and little tunnels to explore. We entered from the Ski Center, which is about a 10–12 minute walk from Karuizawa Station or the Prince Shopping Plaza. The location makes it really accessible, even if you're just coming for a day trip from Tokyo. There’s also a one-hour beginner ski trial available for those who want to try skiing for the first time, but we skipped that since our kids were still too young. Rental gear is available at the base — from boots and jackets to full ski/snowboard sets — but we only needed ski boots for the adults. Pricing was clear and fair: around ¥2,500 for 4 hours or ¥3,000 for a full-day ski/snowboard boot rental. We arrived around 11 AM on a weekday and the crowds were totally manageable, but it’s probably even better to come earlier (9–10 AM) if you want fewer people and fresh snow. Entry was ¥2,500 per adult; I’m not sure if our kids were free or discounted, but it was worth every yen for the fun they had. For families: this is a toddler-friendly snow park with a gentle layout and dedicated play zones. Our kids (ages 3 and 5) had a blast without needing skis. For accessibility: strollers aren’t really usable once you’re in the snow zone, but the Ski Center and walkways are manageable if you plan ahead. Non-slip boots are essential — it gets slippery in places. For rentals: snow gear for all ages is available on-site, or you can wear your own winter clothing and just rent specific items. It’s a fantastic winter activity spot for first-timers or those traveling with young kids, whether you stay overnight in Karuizawa or visit as a day trip.
Laura K — Google review
How could we say it's not a great skiing place. Great facilities and friendly staffs. We had a coach and she's multilingual. A really fun place for people who are new to the ski or a veteran. Most of all, outlet is just nearby, so handy to prepare the gears. Big thumb up
StiMania — Google review
One of the most conveniently located ski resorts (from the POV of someone living in Tokyo, that is). You leave in the morning, get a good 7 hours of skiing (incl lunch break) and then be back at home in the early evening. Very hard to beat! And very reasonable price. If you stay over night, the choices are quite wide, but prices are quite steep, especially if you want to stay close to the slopes. Skiing wise, the no. if slopes are not that many, and if you’re an above average skier, you’ll probably get bored after a few days, but the all the other pros might outweigh that, especially if you’re here with kids. The proximity to the big shopping center is also very nice!
Johan G — Google review
This ski slope is another convenient location , 10 min walk from the Shinkansen station. The slopes are short and mainly for beginners though. It’s not as well organized as Gala Yuzawa. Definitely book your ticket and rentals online in advance because the lines are really long. Also, what I didn’t know is you get both your rental and lift tickets by scanning a QR code. Then you take your printed receipt to the rental shop. Be warned there are very few lockers and otherwise there is a luggage check where you can store your bags while you ski for 1000 yen. This is in the Snow House. Also there are many ski schools here so expect tons of tiny kids and instructors. Lift lines will be long, no getting around that. All in all it’s fine for a light half day of skiing. Nothing special but still convenient.
Andy N — Google review
Fund place to be for snowboarding and skiing. This place can be quite pack. A note for those wanting to rent the gears for more than 1 day has to take back all the gears and only return them on the last day of the rental. Can be a hassle for those staying far carrying the snowboard, shoes, hammet, etc.

I booked a bit too last minute and ended up choosing the cottage. Be total aware some cottages doesn’t have an aircon which is just confusing why not. Don’t chose this hotel if u r not here for golf or wanting to be near to the station or outlet. Outlet food sucks and it probably takes you forever to get to the hotels restaurant from the cottages l. It just literally takes u forever to go anywhere using the bus pick up system. Otherwise staffs r nice and rooms r clean

The hotel isn’t walkable from the station but a shuttle circulates the shopping area and the Prince hotel. The hotel is really big so lots of walking . This review is based on my stay back in 2021 Autumn in Japan. Our hotel room was quite far from the onsen and being late hours it’s very tiring having to walk so much back to my room . I strongly recommend to request a room x closer to the spa area. Checkin and out was fast because plenty of staff during that hour. Our room was reasonable in price for the price we paid for . I won’t use the word spacious but it’s comfortable enough. We had morning tea in the hotel and the establishment was huge. Being weekday , there were hardly anyone there ( note - year 2021) . I will stay at the Prince again in Karuizawa but would like to exolore the East Wing next time.

Karuizawa has many famous hotels, and guests can choose from different lodging areas. I chose a cabin, and the benefit is that it is incredibly quiet. I can also take a walk directly in the forest early in the morning, enjoying the delightful mist and nature. The drawback is that if you want to go shopping or visit restaurants, you must take a shuttle bus and need to pay attention to its schedule.
SS Y — Google review
Nice view from the lodge. The lodge is a bit old though. the whole resort is very nice for morning walk. Good activity halls, you can tennis, golf, rent a bike and onsen in autumn.
Regan J — Google review
This place is big. There are 2 types of lodgings, the regular hotel ones, and cabins in the woods surrounded by tall trees. We stayed at a cabin. During check in and check out, a van will bring you and your luggage to/from the cabin. This place is just next to the Prince outlet shopping area which is also huge.

Had a great stay at Karuizawa Prince Hotel West! Clean and comfy rooms with nice mountain views. Staff were friendly and helpful. Perfect location near shopping. Highly recommend!
Poppy — Google review
The poorest service I have ever experienced in Japan hotel: I have made reservation for breakfast at 9am. When I arrived there on time, I found there are more than 10people lining up. When I intended to ask the staff if people who made reservations still need to line up, they ignored me! There are three staff and no one wanted to respond, until I insisted to get the answer. I finally got the answer- we still need to line up there even if you have made the booking. So what’s the point of making reservations? Ok fine. It’s fine to wait but you should have clear instruction and respond to customers timely. Second, the attitude of staff made me feel unpleasant. They didn’t feel sorry for not providing breakfast to me on time. I did not expect such kind of service in Prince hotel.

Old Karuizawa Ginza Street, also known as Kyu-karuizawa Ginza, is a charming cobbled street lined with half-timbered buildings housing high-end restaurants, cafes, and artisan craft stores. This area developed as a shopping district for villa residents and features a mix of venerable old shops and trendy establishments.
The style of the city is good! Many stores and restaurant in the street, but, it is not that cheap, and also the souvenir is also not cheap. Many local japanese and chinese come here. I saw many good car around. It also many parking car around the street. It is good for just sightseeing, enjoy the city vibes on sunny summer.

Cute old street with a plethora of interesting stores selling craft made from the regional forest. There are some real gems if you're willing to explore the side streets/alleys.

Old Karuizawa Ginza Street is a charming stretch filled with quaint shops, cafés, and nostalgic charm — the perfect spot for a leisurely afternoon stroll. We were pleasantly surprised to catch a delightful street monkey performance while wandering through the area, adding to the fun and lively atmosphere. Our kids made a beeline for the Peter Rabbit Bakery & Café, and it turned out to be a lovely stop. The soft serve ice cream was creamy, smooth, and beautifully presented — a treat that perfectly matched the whimsical theme of the café. The whole place exudes a cosy, storybook vibe with plenty of photo-worthy corners and themed merchandise for fans of Peter Rabbit. It’s easy to see why Old Karuizawa Ginza remains one of the town’s most popular attractions. Whether you’re there for souvenirs, a snack, or just a stroll, it’s an experience that blends nature, nostalgia, and small-town warmth beautifully.

Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza Shopping Street is one of Karuizawa’s most charming and lively destinations, blending history, culture, and modern style. This iconic stone-paved street is lined with a variety of unique shops, cozy cafés, and traditional craft stores, creating a perfect mix of old and new. You can find everything from local delicacies and handmade souvenirs to stylish boutiques and sweets shops. The wooden buildings and retro atmosphere make it feel like you’ve stepped back in time, while still enjoying a modern shopping experience. Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll, trying famous Karuizawa treats like jam or bakery goods, or simply enjoying coffee on a terrace, the area offers something for everyone. The surrounding nature adds a refreshing touch, especially in autumn when the street is framed by stunning red and yellow leaves. Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza is not just a shopping street—it’s a must-visit destination that captures the heart and elegance of Karuizawa.

Shiraito Waterfall is a serene natural attraction located in the forested area of Karuizawa, just a short bus ride from the station. This picturesque waterfall spans 3 meters in height and 70 meters in width, with multiple white streams cascading down like a curtain of white threads. The surrounding lush greenery makes it an enchanting sight during summer, while autumn brings vibrant foliage to the area.
I visited the falls during the snow day and I felt like i was in a snow globe. The scene was unreal ... so beautiful and it was not crowded and since i traveled solo so i could set up my camera and took lots of photos. Easy bus ride from the station. The bus was punctual so make sure to plan and get ready for the bus time to go back. This was the highlight of my trip to Tokyo. It's free to visit.

Shiraito Waterfall is absolutely stunning — a true hidden gem surrounded by lush greenery. The curtain-like streams of water cascading gently down the mossy rock wall create a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere. The walk from the various parking area is short and scenic, with a few small shops selling local snacks such as croquettes and grilled ayu fish, and souvenirs along the way. The air feels fresh and cool. A perfect spot to pause, take photos, and simply enjoy nature’s beauty. Highly recommend visiting, especially in the morning when it’s quiet and avoid the crowds. Do take note that you will have to pay a fee of ¥500 when your car passes through to the parking lot. Avoid temptation to park immediately when you see a lot, try parking closer to the shops and the waterfall.
Ivan N — Google review
There was not much water at the Shiraito Waterfall when we visited on 25 October 2025 but it was still beautiful, leaves were starting to change colour. There was a 500 yen fee for entering the waterfall area by car. The drive to the waterfall is pleasurable with red leaves along the way. Parking and toilets were available. The waterfall is just a short easy walk from the parking area. There were food stalls near the waterfall. We tried the venison bun (500 yen) which was ok and the roasted fish (800 yen) was delicious.
Mun M — Google review
Beautiful but much smaller than it seems from the pictures. You can hike up from the waterfall through beautiful forest - we met only 2 other people, it’s quiet and relaxing, has some steeper stairs though. I’d say requires moderate fitness and takes approx. 1h to the top
Wiola C — Google review
11/2/2025 - Amazing please. Recommend to come early to avoid the crowd. It's only 5mins walk from the parking lot. Later we walk all the way back to the station, it's about 10 miles, but the trails are amazingly beautiful and quiet.
Joojoo — Google review
Leisure drive up the mountains for only 500 yen and found convenient parking at car park 1. It was really close to the waterfall and a great break from all the noise in major cities, with plenty of fresh air and beautiful autumn foliage to reset yourself.
Trident M — Google review
It was alright, not much to see unless you want to hike around the national park. Not entirely worth the detour out of town. Unless you have lots of time. You can go by your own car or by public bus (cost 720 Yen one-way).
Mary L — Google review
I took the bus at the Karuizawa Station bus stop #2, it is labeled so you can see it clearly. Look out for the information board near it also, I bought the 1-day bus ride pass for only ¥1400. Basically I took this bus to and from Shiraito Waterfall, and just show the pass on your phone to the bus driver. The Shiraito Waterfall is a great place for you to relax and enjoy nature especially if you love Autumn season, waterfalls, and grilled fish. They provide free WiFi for everyone and apparently they encourage people to share your feelings on social media about this place. Please just slow down and enjoy the relaxing environment.

Kua Aina Sandwich Shop is a modern fast-food joint with Hawaiian flair, offering delicious burgers, sandwiches, and salads. The menu features a variety of options such as the BBQ avocado burger and sets that come with small fries and a drink. While it's a popular spot, customers can order online in advance to avoid wait times. Additionally, take-out pancake orders are available upon request at the counter.
Kua aina is my favorite hamburger and sandwich chain in Japan. Their burgers and sandwiches are big enough and I like their thin fries. It really tastes good. Ordering and payment are self checkout. Drinks, ketchup and mustard are self service.

My kid loves the burger, but i find the bun is a bit too dry. Clam chowder soup is okay (my kid loves it too), and caesar salad is very fresh, recommended.

Kuaaina's burgers are very tasty, the place is quite big but they are in partnership with Pizza-la, offering a very good variety of burgers, pizzas and paella.

Great tasting burger, pancakes and fries. Clean and quiet place. Staff very friendly.
Marissa F — Google review
Been to many Kua Aina shops in Japan but this was by far the most disappointing. The hamburger patty for my selection was overcook. The turkey in the turkey sandwich was very salty. The potatoes included in the set seemed like it was about half the volume that I got in other shops in the Tokyo area. The drink bar included un the set price had a pretty good selection. There is a lot of seating with each table having its own disinfectant.
CuppyRider — Google review
I had heard Kua before and it’s as known as Obama’s favorite burgers in Hawaii. But the patty was a little dry and fries were served cold. I think the waiters were too busy to take care of all the customers. But self-service for water and ketchup is ok. I can do it myself faster.

Delicious burgers at this Hawaiian themed restaurant. Burgers range from around 1100 to 1500 yen. Sets come with small fries and drink. I had the BBQ avocado burger. It's a popular restaurant so there could be some wait time. Expect to wait 15 to 20 minutes for your order.

The restaurant's specialties include healthy vegetable dishes, miso soup, fresh salads, and vinegar-enhanced rice steamed in a copper pot for a unique taste and fluffy texture.
Unexpected restuarant, I wanted to try the Soba shop next to this restuarant but it was busy so I found this one which is not seen in my google map. It is superb food many selections and all great taste. I read the other reviewer later on. They are all say great. If you need japanese food inspired by European set-up, this is the must to try. Lastly, price is reasonable.

came across this and decided to try it. we loved it! everything is perfect, we ordered the hamburg set and we devoured everything including all the side dishes & miso soup! with amazing sake to top it off, will definitely come back again if we visit karuizawa 😊😊

Although Karuizawa is a small town, you can bring groups of 10-20 people to dine in Suju Masayuki (unlike other non-chain restaurants). The restaurant specializes in miso and other cooking ingredients in traditional method for generations, so you really need to try their Gindara Miso (their Salmon miso is so-so for me), Beef Steak, Cold Tofu, and Japanese-style Sweet and Sour Pork! Rice also comes in few options - try their Ochazuke if you haven’t try it before. Even their Miso Soup is special 😍! Not just tofu and seaweed, they just put many things in the soup but it blends really well. Definitely will come again.

Suju Masayuki is an outstanding restaurant in Karuizawa that delivers authentic, traditional Japanese cuisine with deep historical roots. The brand’s 200-year legacy is reflected in every dish, showcasing refined craftsmanship and balance of flavours. What makes Suju truly special is its mastery of vinegar-based cooking — a hallmark of its culinary philosophy. The dishes are perfectly seasoned to enhance umami without overpowering the natural taste of the ingredients. Every bite feels like a taste of Japan’s culinary heritage, served with care and precision. We were lucky to get a table for lunch without waiting, and the experience was nothing short of memorable. The ambience is serene, the presentation elegant, and the service attentive. It’s a wonderful stop for anyone visiting Karuizawa who appreciates depth, history, and genuine Japanese flavours. A timeless dining experience worth returning for.

A must-come when you’re in Karuizawa! The miso marinated chicken thigh has such a unique texture and its flavour is just right to pair with their copper kettle cooked rice! I love toro toro (grated yam in the red bowl) and theirs was specially flavoured! The rice in bonito is definitely comfort food for Spring time. Great service and ambience!

We went on friday night for dinner close to 7pm. There were plenty of seats available. The shinshu beef and sake lees marinated pork was delicious. Overall very high cost performance. We enjoyed the food and will come again when we visit Karuizawa.

Finally got to try the original Suju outlet - which did not disappoint indeed. The menu features plenty of local vegetables and local specialty. The sweet and sour pork is amazing.
Stephanie W — Google review
The food was delicious in this upscale restaurant in the heart of Old Karuizawa. The 3 bean appetizer, and the raw vegetables with miso dip appetizer were yummy and plenty for 6 of us. Then came our delicious meals of sweet and sour pork with vegetables, beef stew, mackerel fish, miso soup and rice set, and pork shoulder. Everyone was happy with their delicious dinner choices. To top it off we shared amazing Japanese roasted tea crème brûlée. The waitress brought small bowls and spoons so we could all have a little taste. It was excellent fast service in a sophisticated cozy atmosphere. Be sure to make a reservation because it’s popular and fills up quickly. English menu available upon request.

Yakiniku restaurant
Restaurant
We came here on our first night in Karuizawa because we wanted something good and fast. Our hotel recommended this restaurant and we were very pleased with it. The different cuts of meat were delicious, very tender and great quality. Also our rice dishes (bibimbam and veg rice bowl) were great. We had our table for 1,5 h, which was manageable, since the service is super quick and friendly as well. The restaurant is not cheap but I'd say it is worth spending a little bit more, in the end one gets premium meat. Would definitely come back if we'd stay longer.

The wagu beef is as pretty good. The location close and convenient to the station and shopping outlet. Pricing is not bad in comparison to wagu in the city(tokyo). Overall experience is surprisingly decent considering its a outlet restaurant and there ain’t many to choose from around the area.
TTP L — Google review
Must patron if you like beef. We tried out the 7 kinds of beef and grilled with medium fire. Juicy and tender. Go well with the lettuce. We preferred sauce to salt. Meanwhile, the wagyu does not fetch the difference of its price. We also ordered the bibimbap without beef, instead of plain rice. Crispy and delicious, though portion is a bit small. We revisited the restaurant 3 days later as it is the best beef restaurant in the proximity. Seats filled up quickly after 6. come early to avoid long waiting time.

Decent grilled aged meat restaurant at a very convenient location. Less than 5 minutes from the station and the shopping plaza. Prices are on the higher end but that’s expected at Karuizawa. Set lunch provide good value and then offer a range of a la Carte cuts. Prices reflect the quality.

Day 2

West side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the west side side of town. Start the day off with Harunire Terrace, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Hiroshi Senju Museum Karuizawa. All together, your day would be filled with about 10 hours of non-stop fun.

Harunire Terrace is a charming riverside destination in Karuizawa, offering a laid-back atmosphere with casual outdoor restaurants, cafes, and boutique shops. The area boasts modern hotels like Hoshino Resorts and Prince Hotel, providing a delightful winter experience amidst stunning natural surroundings. Visitors can indulge in French fine dining using local ingredients at Harunire Terrace and enjoy hotel onsen with views of snowy mountains.
Awesome place to hang out. I am visiting here again and again while I am staying in the Hoshino resort area. Photos show the early morning so few people yet, but it is usually bustling vibrant space.

There aren't many activities for foreign tourists, and it may not be worth visiting if traveling by train or bus due to potential inconveniences. The terrace has a few shops and restaurants, but they are not particularly noteworthy. It serves as a relaxation spot for locals to sit and unwind.
Tony C — Google review
Harunire Terrace is one of the most beautiful and tranquil spots in Karuizawa. A gentle creek runs alongside a row of quaint cafés, boutique shops, and restaurants, creating the perfect backdrop for a slow, relaxing stroll. The sound of flowing water, crisp mountain air, and peaceful winter stillness made the entire experience feel almost meditative. The setting is beautifully designed — wooden walkways, natural surroundings, and well-curated stores that offer everything from artisanal pastries to handcrafted gifts. My daughter loved exploring the charming shops, and we could easily have spent half a day here enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and taking photos by the creek. It’s especially magical in winter, when the cool air and quiet ambience make it feel like a hidden gem tucked away from the world. Whether you’re visiting for coffee, brunch, or a little shopping, Harunire Terrace captures the essence of Karuizawa’s slow and scenic lifestyle. A must-visit for anyone who loves nature and good vibes.

An open air mall as part of the broader Hoshino resort. Anyone is welcome to the mall. Stores are pricier but the atmosphere is comfortable and not crowded. There are lots of benches to enjoy the scene, and free restroom. The mall integrates existing landscaping. Overall should visit at opening as it is not busy.

Day-use onsen
Onsen
Outdoor bath
Tonbo-no-yu is a serene and natural onsen facility located in the Hoshino Onsen Hot Spring area, known as the "firefly bath." The hot springs are supplied directly from the source and are highly beneficial for the skin. The bathhouse features a Japanese minimalistic design with colorful dragonflies floating around, creating a peaceful atmosphere. It has indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, and cold pool, offering visitors a relaxing experience.
A day-trip bathing facility located in Hoshino Onsen, a hot spring that has been around since the Taisho Era. When paying the admission fee at the reception, you can get a rental towel for an additional fee. The changing rooms have heated floors, and the small bathtubs for bathing babies are available for rent. The indoor baths are beautifully green and smooth to the touch. The outdoor bath is lukewarm and happens to be the best location to enjoy the fluttering snow at the same time. A recommended spot in Karuizawa in winter.
44 G — Google review
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stop by since my hotel had its own onsen, but I’m glad I did. The outdoor baths are lovely and I had a nice time in here. Plenty of space as well since Hoshinoya guests are given private access for an hour in the morning.
Tina C — Google review
I was really disappointed by this visit—especially because it was my wife’s first onsen experience, and I had hoped it would reflect the calm, respectful atmosphere onsens are known for. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. While the facility itself is quite nice—clean, well-maintained, and visually pleasant—it completely failed to uphold the basic etiquette that makes an onsen enjoyable and sanitary. The rules are clearly posted, but they’re not enforced at all. On the men’s side, things were somewhat better, but there were still quite a few visitors (mostly foreign tour groups) ignoring the etiquette: yelling across pools, splashing, and dipping their hair into the water. The women’s side, however, was total chaos. My wife described it as bedlam—women talking loudly, dipping their hair into the baths, and generally disregarding the rules. It was stressful and unhygienic, the opposite of what an onsen should be. Onsens rely on everyone following the traditions—washing properly before entering, keeping towels and hair out of the water, and maintaining a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. When so many people break these rules, it’s not just unpleasant—it becomes a sanitation issue. This facility really needs active staff presence to educate guests and, if necessary, remove those who ignore the etiquette. Setting a capacity limit would also help maintain order. It’s a shame, because the onsen itself has potential. With better rule enforcement and respect for tradition, it could be a wonderful experience. But as it stands, I wouldn’t recommend it—especially for first-timers hoping to experience a true Japanese onsen atmosphere.

Nice onsen with one outdoor and one indoor onsen. Everything was clean. I stayed at BEB5 and paid 600 yen to get in, comes with a set of towels. Sauna room was small and could get crowded easily.
Yung F — Google review
Well worth the 1500Y for day-use onsen! The outdoor bath boasts a beautiful view of the autumn maple trees. There is an indoor bath as well complete with a view of the garden outside. We love the friendly service and delicious food in the cafe too. Best of all, there is a public bus service just outside the onsen.
Michelle Y — Google review
It is my personal opinion, so far been to different onsens in Japan, this onsen was an average. I didn't find any wow factor in comparison to the price. The shower area is quite big. The open bath area outside is small enough for a busy day. I would have been satisfied if there would have been jacuzzi or cold milk fridge or relaxation room.
Anuprita C — Google review
It is a nice hot spring. I think it was refurbished this year with a very good interior. The place is small but sometimes very crowded depending on the day. The outside hot spring is kinda low temperature. Inside is pretty hot.
Nozomu T — Google review
Daytriped from Tokyo which took under 2hours; 1h by Shinkansen and 50m by bus. Very pretty public onsen, surrounded by nature. Although the women area had just 2 pools (1 indoor and 1 outdoor). it felt very spacious. This is the nicest public onsen I had visited. Entrance fee is y1350, and towels can be rented at extra costs.

Nestled in the serene surroundings of Karuizawa, Japan, the Karuizawa Kogen Church is a striking triangular wooden church known for its unique architecture and beautiful natural setting. Just a short drive from Naka-Karuizawa Station, this impressive structure features a pointed triangular roof that creates an illusion of being just the tip of a larger structure beneath the surface.
Loved the unique structures of the Churches in Karuizawa. Many are triangular in shape. It was simple but it has a solemn and intimate ambiance. It seems to be very popular with weddings. Im sure it looks really nice as the season changes too.

It was ok. Probably better during Autumn season. Was not able to roam around too much because there is a wedding pictorial. The fence is close, you cant take your picture unless you're within the perimeter of the fence. I can't get a good picture of the Kogen Church outside of the fence since the tree trunks blocks the view. I prefer the stone church near the Kogen Church. The inside is beautiful. And the story of the shape of the church is meaningful.

I attended the Summer Candle Night Festival, which I applied for through an online ballot system about a month ago. Although the application process was a bit challenging, it was well worth the effort! The night was truly enjoyable, with free entry. The candlelight created a romantic atmosphere, making it perfect for couples looking to capture sweet moments. I visited during the summer, and while it was cozy and pleasant, I imagine it will be even more festive during Christmas! I definitely plan to revisit soon!
Chan D — Google review
We visited Karuizawa Kogen Church during the Christmas season, and it was absolutely magical. The softly lit chapel, glowing pathways, and beautifully decorated Christmas trees made it feel like stepping into a winter fairytale. The entire atmosphere was calm, reverent, and filled with festive warmth — truly one of the most memorable stops on our Karuizawa trip. Even though the chapel itself is modest in size, the sense of peace and beauty is remarkable. The surrounding grounds are open to the public, allowing visitors to take a quiet evening stroll while admiring the twinkling lights and serene ambience. Everything was tastefully done, with gentle music and a tranquil setting that perfectly captures the spirit of Christmas in Japan. It’s easy to see why Karuizawa Kogen Church is one of the most photographed and beloved landmarks in the area. Whether you’re visiting for a special occasion or simply want a moment of quiet reflection, this place is a must-visit. A truly heartwarming and unforgettable experience.

Stone Church, located in Karuizawa, is a captivating architectural gem that seamlessly blends natural surroundings with man-made design. This stunning church was built as a memorial to Uchimura Kanzo and was designed by American architect Kendrick Kellogg. The unique structure features stone and glass arches of increasing size, creating a solemn atmosphere illuminated by sunlight. It's an exemplary display of organic architecture, prioritizing harmony with nature.
Wonderful experience in the remarkable Stone Church. It is indeed an architectural beauty that blends in so well with Nature. We were lucky to be able to enter the church premises and the staff were very friendly. During daytime, you can see the beautiful sun rays streaming in the roof.

Stone and light, silence and soul — the Stone Church in Karuizawa feels alive. 🌿 Where sunlight dances through arches, and peace whispers between every wall. A place that reminds you — beauty doesn’t shout, it breathes. ✨🇯🇵 1️⃣ Hidden in the forest, built from earth and light. 🌲 2️⃣ Each stone stacked with purpose, each curve in harmony. ⛪ 3️⃣ Sunlight spilled like poetry through glass. ☀️ 4️⃣ No words, no noise — just calm within. 🌿 5️⃣ The air felt sacred, the silence loud. 🍃 6️⃣ Art, faith, and nature in one breath. ✨ 7️⃣ A moment of stillness I’ll never forget. 💫 8️⃣ Karuizawa — where peace finds its home. 🇯🇵

This is my first time to give one star. We could not enter the church due to the staff told us that there is a wedding ceremony inside. The old female staff told us in Japanese that we only can enter the church at the period of 3pm to 3:45pm, but it was 14pm meaning we should wait for one hour. However, next Japanese old couple just came at the entrance, and I heard that she said if you want to enter and see the church, please wait here at the entrance for 10-15 mins. Why different?! I can understand Japanese language, okay!? It is totally unfair to foreigners! I don’t want to argue and ruin my mood in front of church. God will know it. Personal recommend: ★ Family-friendly: ★ Date for couples: ★ Parking lot: ◯ there is a temporary parking lot Services/meals/products/design: ★ Period for stay: 30 mins Charge: free Baby room/accessible toilet: ✕ Cleanness: ★

The architecture is fairly unique, but that's about it, and unique isn't always the same as remarkable. It's smaller than expected and as far as "organic architecture" goes it's a bit of an outdated piece in that it lacks any forward thinking adaptations for actual enviromentalism or sustainability, it simply tries to mimic what a designer feels would be a "natural" built addition to the location. What results is something that doesn't stand out apart from its awkward location. It's small too; not really worth a specific trip to visit unless you love the architect, I guess. There is a good usage of natural light, but nothing groundbreaking. Materials are mainly stone, kind of awkwardly planted into the ground in a way that feels exactly like a forced human imitation of nature.

The Hiroshi Senju Museum Karuizawa is an elegant museum dedicated to the renowned Japanese painter, Hiroshi Senju. Designed by the artist himself in collaboration with architect Ryue Nishizawa, the museum represents a harmonious blend of art and nature in Karuizawa. The bright and white-themed building features sinuous glass walls that create a serene pathway through beautiful gardens, allowing visitors to admire both the greenery and Senju's artworks.

You’re not allowed to take photos, but you get tickets on the machine in the front. The architecture was gorgeous and we enjoyed the collection inside. They also had a cool showing at the time that we also liked. Make sure to keep quiet though! There’s another gallery and store in the same plaza so be sure to explore.
Tina C — Google review
⚠️ BEFORE you go to the museum, go to the free gallery at the bottom of the car park. They run a video with the artist explaining about his art, inspiration and techniques (Japanese only) but it will give you a better understanding of the art in the gallery. The building is worth a visit, the artwork is a plus. Not allowing photography is annoying, I would have loved to share the place with friends and family who are unable to visit. The garden around the gallery is lovely too.
Jo E — Google review
Celebrating just one local artist, this small museum is mostly interesting for the architecture. The art sits in it nicely. Other reviews talk about the gardens, but they are very minimal. Not worth ¥1500. No internal photos allowed. Big car park, cafe, small museum shop.
Douglas A — Google review
Rather than the artworks, which I honestly found quite repetitive, I personally took more pleasure in the architectural spaces. They sinuously and elegantly craft areas between the surrounding forest and circular inner garden islands of carefully chosen plants, all enclosed by large glass panes.

Il Sogno Pizzeria イル・ソーニョ is an Italian restaurant known for its carefully selected vegetables used in their dishes, especially the pizzas cooked in a brick oven. The staff is accommodating to dietary restrictions, even customizing dishes for vegetarians and those with specific preferences. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, with outdoor heaters available for colder days. The food, including pasta, pizza, and desserts, is delicious and served promptly.
Really nice and friendly staff, delicious al dante pasta! those classic Italian pastas are nicely made, while those Japanese ones with new formulas are also impressive, they use very very fresh vegetables and other ingredients with hearts!

Service: Kind, almost overly attentive staff. Food: Pizza was ok but paper thin. Pasta portions are microscopic… even for Japanese standards, but flavors are great. The garlic toast, fish carpaccio and lemonade is fabulous. The highland salad dressing was flavorless… literally just olive oil. In general it would have been an ok dining experience if it wasn’t double the price for the same quality in Tokyo. Atmosphere: really beautiful space. 5 stars.

Nice pizza and pasta. But, this is “expected quality” in Japanese.
Tm L — Google review
My rating is based on the price paid. I think it was overpriced for what it was. Besides that I don't have any complaints. I had the dinner set. I preferred the Pana Cotta most. You were given a choice of coffee or black tea as a drink option. But it's possible to exchange for another type of tea for example. If you choose a pizza or pasta that's not the default option, you'll have to pay extra. (100 to 1000yen).

Came here with an omnivorous party, but told the waiter I was vegetarian and couldn't eat cheese. They even went to exclude egg from the bread, so they gave me too pieces of the baguette instead of the round bread which had egg. The Genovese pesto pasta was suitable for vegetarians and potentially even vegans since there was no meat, cheese, or egg. I didn't explicitly confirm if it was though. Mandarin restaurant
Kisurin is a Chinese homestyle cuisine restaurant in Asia that offers standard Chinese dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant features counter seating where diners can watch the chef prepare their meals. There is also an option for outdoor dining. Visitors have praised the flavorful dishes, such as the fried rice with meat sauce and sweet and sour pork. The Japanese interpretation of Chinese food at Kisurin results in tasty, though not necessarily authentic, dishes.
Food is suprisingly good! Even the soup is very tasty. Portion is not big consider I am a man. But is good portion for ladies. Only tiny little bar table available, but is good to see chef cooking dishes right in front of you. Overall: good value and very delicious food!

We visited as English-speaking tourists and had a similar experience to other reviews regarding service. On our first visit on 18th February, we walked in but were immediately shooed away without any inquiries or attempts to assist us. Our Airbnb host made multiple calls that day, but none were answered. Eventually, they had to visit in person to inquire about our reservation. On 20th February, we arrived for dinner at 5:24 PM. The staff present, including a man wearing spectacles, did not appear to be aware of our reservation. Despite having a toddler and two elderly parents with us, we were asked to wait outside. Given the cold weather and the fact that no other customers were around, we asked if we could wait in the lobby, but this was declined. By 5:26 PM, we were still discussing whether we needed to return to the car due to the cold. However, at 5:27 PM, we were suddenly allowed to enter. It was a frustrating experience with little regard for customer comfort. There are few Chinese food options in Karuizawa, making this a potentially good choice for those seeking this cuisine. However, if the service remains at this level, it will likely drive customers away and negatively impact the business.

Nice interior with counter seats where you can watch the chef in action. There is also a table outside. Visited on a weekday for lunch and didn't have to wait. The rice dish of the day was fried rice with meat sauce and although it might not look great in the photo, it tasted good. The sweet and sour pork was good too.

Limited food options, but good with affordable prices. Space is small so waiting time is quite long. Overall, a should-try restaurant!

Good. Japanese interpretation of Chinese food, which is to say very tasty if not necessarily authentic. Nice bar counter setting and outdoor table available in nice weather.

Had the tantanmen for 1380 yen on a rainy day. I can't ask for more. The broth is savoury and packed with flavour. Plus, the fried minced meat gave it another level.

Restaurant
Sonmin-Shokudo is a casual dining experience located in the beautiful village of Karuizawa. The restaurant offers set menus with seasonal ingredients for lunch and an a la carte menu in the evening, making it perfect for a relaxing meal after visiting Tombo no yu. Despite its modern architecture and window walls, Sonmin-Shokudo offers moderate prices and does not require reservations.
Good dinning atmosphere and environment. Friendly and helpful staff. Need to wait a bit during dinning hours. Ordering by QR code, and paying at the counter. There is parking lot, and Tonbo-no-yu is just right next door.

We went here for lunch on a weekend. Make sure to get a number first from a machine inside. They have an option where they can call you on your phone once your number is called. We waited for about 70 minutes for a table. The interior of the restaurant was really nice. Loved the wood & glass motif. I ordered the Deep Fried Miso Flavored Chicken Set Meal. The serving was really big. The food was good too. Enjoyed our meal here despite the long wait.

One of the favorites of the local especially when they have seasonal dishes being served. Food was great. We ordered the special made pork cutlet, deep fried miso chicken, grilled fish and a few appetisers. Suggest to turn up early if you would like to visit as the queue can be quite long. We waited about 40 mins before our turn.

Simple, and conveniently located family style restaurant located at an onsen hotel. We stopped by for a quick mushroom nabe dinner. Wasn’t good nor bad but, again it isn’t easy to find a meal this late in Karuizawa. This is a great place to fall back on if you haven’t made dinner plans.

Bleston Court Yukawatan is a charming restaurant located in the Hoshino Resort's sister hotel, Bleston Court. The restaurant offers a unique blend of French cuisine with a Japanese touch, using locally sourced ingredients to create unforgettable dishes. With only 9 tables and 24 seats, the intimate setting allows for personalized service and attention to detail. Guests can enjoy delicious amuse bouche in the outdoor area before indulging in exquisite meals featuring uncommon meats like boar, deer, and pigeon.
The restaurant skillfully and effortlessly incorporates local ingredients from Nagano Prefecture, resulting in flavors that are not only precise but beautifully balanced. The portions were just right, and the thoughtfully curated wine pairings elevated every dish. The attentive and friendly waitstaff, along with the serene, Zen-inspired view from the window, made for a truly immersive and delightful experience for all the senses. Congratulations to the chef and the entire team!

It was an absolutely perfect meal. From the delightful surprise of the Amuse-Bouche to the seasonal tender bamboo shoot dish, every course was meticulously prepared. Both the trout and salmon were executed flawlessly. The most surprising dish was the Rock salt-baked beetroot—I’ve never had beetroot this perfect before. Another standout was the combination of carp sashimi with white wine sauce, which was truly exceptional. The Wine Pairing was also outstanding, featuring predominantly white wines but with a remarkable variety and depth. This was an unforgettable dining experience, and I will definitely be returning.

Nestled atop the Usui Pass at an elevation of 1,200m, Kumanokotai Shrine is a unique and picturesque hilltop shrine that spans across Nagano and Gunma Prefectures. The shrine's premises are divided between the two prefectures, with separate offices for two priests. It is known for its distinctive tree with a heart-shaped hole in its trunk.
A shrine on the prefectural border of Karuizawa🤣 Located at an altitude of 1200m at the top of Usui Pass, it is called "Kumano Kotaijinja" on the Nagano side😊 On the Gunma side, it is called "Kumano Shrine" An ancient shrine said to have been built by Yamato Takeru. It is designated as a special shrine in Shinano Province. As the prefectures are separated, there are also two offering boxes❤️ The Shinano tree, which is over 1000 years old, has long been worshiped as a sacred tree for good luck and matchmaking. Since it is at the top of Usui Pass, the view is also great🥰🥰🥰

Visited in oct 2018 and it was a quaint little shrine with a cool fact about it being in between two prefectures. Took the red tourist bus up the mountain. was planning to visit again in dec 2022 but sadly it turns out the red tourist bus that usually shuttles between karuizawa and the shrine is not in service during the winter season so please do take note when planning to travel to there in winter!

Karuizawa St. Paul's Catholic Church, designed by the renowned architect Antonin Raymond, is a small but significant place of worship in Karuizawa. Nestled amidst the serene woods, it offers a tranquil setting for visitors to reconnect with their spiritual side and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This rustic-style church has historical significance as it hosted Japan's first Christian wedding for non-Christians and continues to be a popular venue for celebrity weddings.
Nice and quiet Catholic Church. We were there for a Japanese weekend mass. The mass was celebrated in Japanese but with google translate, we are able to understand 70% of the homily. Mass are available in following timing: Sunday: 9:00 - 10:00 Saturday: 18:00 - 19:00 Weekday: 7:00 - 8:00

Karuizawa St. Paul’s Catholic Church is a charming, peaceful spot surrounded by nature. Its quaint wooden architecture and serene ambiance make it a lovely place for quiet reflection or a short visit. Though small, the setting feels sacred and timeless, often enhanced by the sound of birds or soft sunlight filtering through the trees. It’s also a popular stop for photos, especially in autumn or winter. A beautiful example of simple spiritual architecture in a scenic resort town.

Karuizawa St. Paul Catholic Church. I went there on June 15th 2024 with a friend who got married in this church 46 years ago on June 11th 1978. She said it was memorable. The pastor was Father Carlos Martinez, OFM from Colombia. He has passed away. We met Father Takano and he prayed for my friend. According to Father Takano, some couples came back to this church to offer thanksgiving for their 50th wedding anniversary together with their children and grandchildren. Praise the Lord!

Mampei Hotel

Hotel
The Mampei Hotel is a historic landmark in Karuizawa, Japan, with a rich history dating back to 1894. It was the first Western-style hotel in the area and has since become a prominent lodging option. The hotel's Gothic-style exterior and landscaped gardens provide an elegant backdrop for guests to enjoy. Renowned for its association with the Studio Ghibli animation film 'The Wind Rises,' the hotel offers muted rooms, a cocktail bar, and various dining options.
Nestled amidst the serene landscapes of Karuizawa, the Mampei Hotel stands as a testament to classic luxury and rich history. It truly is like staying in a Wes Anderson film punctuated with natural peace and Japanese precision. Established in 1894, this iconic establishment seamlessly blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with Western influences, offering guests an experience that is both elegant and culturally immersive. For us, it was also a walk in the footsteps of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, as it was one of their favorite places to stay in Japan. The hotel's architecture exudes a nostalgic charm, with its well-preserved structures and interiors reflecting a bygone era. The main dining room, renowned for its impressive design, provides a picturesque garden view, enhancing the dining experience. We enjoyed both the Western and Japanese Breakfast. The Japanese was the best Japanese Breakfast we had on our whole trip, and we had many. make sure to let them know you would like it in advance. The staff were charming and kind to us every morning without fail. Our room was spacious and thoughtfully appointed, maintaining the delicate balance between historical charm and modern comfort. The rooms are equipped with contemporary amenities, although we found the Japanese winter and heaters a little drying, the staff quickly appointed us a humidifier or Kashikki which easily remedied the moisture level. The pajamas provided are also divine. The hotel's proximity to local attractions, such as the Kyukaruizawa Ginza-dori shopping street and the tranquil Kumobaike Pond, made it an ideal choice for us as we would walk to Ginza and then towards the station to shop at the Prince mall. What truly distinguishes Mampei Hotel is its exceptional service, epitomized by staff members like Yutaro San who was especially impressive. Perfect English and a kind, helpful and professional countenance. Yutaro's personalized recommendations and attentive assistance left an indelible impression on us, embodying the essence of Japanese hospitality. Thank you Yutaro San. The Mampei Hotel offers a harmonious blend of historical elegance, luxurious comfort, and outstanding service. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a foodie, or simply seeking a serene retreat, Mampei Hotel promises an cinematic experience you will not soon forget. Thank you to Yutaro San and the entire staff.

I attended my dearest friend’s wedding at Mampei hotel on October. I had an amazing wedding banquet lunch here. The banquet staff were all well trained. They were polite, efficient and attentive. All in all, I must say my friend chose a wonderful hotel to hold their wedding banquet in.

Beautiful preserved interior. It is an old hotel with a lot of history. The food is great. Be sure to visit the cafe terrace and have John Lennon's favorite combo of apple pie and royal mill tea. There is also an old bus that picks you up infront of the hotel and takes you to a mountain view spot. There is a bicycle rental close by about 3 minutes from the hotel. It is also close to the main street which is great because there are many interesting shops to enjoy.

Biked over for a slice of Mampei’s apple pie and roll cake. Both are warm, heavenly tasty memories of this most lovely hotel. Its architecture and elegant ambiance takes you back to a special time of Karuizawa’s history.

Atelier de Fromage Pizzeria is a charming spot located in Karuizawa, Japan. This place offers a great selection of locally made cheeses, making it a must-visit for cheese enthusiasts. The pizzeria is known for its delicious blue cheese pizza and fondue, as well as other pasta and salad options that incorporate their flavorful cheeses. While the portion size of the fondue may be small, the quality of the dishes makes up for it.
This shop is located nearby Karuizawa St. There were a lot of Cheeses, Cakes, and frozen Pizzas. You can buy good souvenir in here. They prepare ice pack for frozen items though, it's just valid for 3 hours at most. if you need over 3 hours to go back to your home, it might be hard to take away frozen items. In my humble opinion, Tiramisu was very good quality. I can't forget the rich taste.

Great place to have a family meal. Reservations needed during peak periods. Cheese fondue and pizzas are highly recommended! They have seasonal flavours and ingredients for the fondue. Service staff are highly attentive, and very accommodating. Various seating configurations for 8-10pax and smaller groups. Atelier de Fromage Pizzeria is a lovely spot for anyone who loves cheese in all its forms. The atmosphere is welcoming and bright, and everything feels made with care. I especially loved the blue cheese baked curry rich, flavorful, and deeply comforting and the pizza that came half Margherita and half five-cheese was truly wonderful. The salad, topped with generous shavings of their own cheese, was also fresh and full of flavor. As someone who grew up in the Netherlands with traditional cheese fondue, I found their version a little watery in texture, not quite what I’m used to back home. Still, the flavor was enjoyable gentle and creamy just different from the European style I know. Overall, it’s a place full of warmth and excellent dishes that celebrate cheese in creative ways. A great stop in Karuizawa for any cheese lover.

The blue cheese pizza was to die for. I didn’t take a full picture of the pizza cos it smelled so good that we didn’t let the camera eat the pizza first !! We had the pasta specials which was the pasta bolognese, it felt more like a deconstructed pasta , not too bad . The salad was interesting , cheese used was delicious a nice mix with the onsen egg to add. Everything good with beer . We didn’t try the fondue although they were famous for it . I

Kumoba Pond, also known as Kumobaike or 'Swan Lake,' is a popular destination in Karuizawa, Japan. Legend has it that the pond was formed by rainwater filling the footprint of a giant from nearby Mount Asama. Tourists and photographers flock to this modest pond seasonally to witness its stunning display of autumn leaves, making it a must-see spot for koyo (fall foliage) in Karuizawa.
Kumoba Pond is one of the most peaceful and scenic spots in Karuizawa. The walking path around the pond is easy and very relaxing, with beautiful views at every turn. We visited in the colder season, and even without the autumn colours, the reflections on the water and the surrounding natural scenery were stunning. It is a wonderful place for a slow stroll and to take in fresh mountain air away from the busy shopping streets. A must-visit if you are in Karuizawa, especially during autumn when the foliage is at its peak.

Visited this place on 27 Oct and it is just on the right time to enjoy the autumn foliage. The weather is great and the scenery is stunning. There is car park available and also public washroom near the entrance of the park. Alternatively, you may park your car at the old ginza shopping district area and take 20 mins walk (~1.4km, mostly flat) on a nice weather day. This is a public park and no admission ticket is needed.

Nestled in the picturesque Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku County, Nagano Prefecture, Cafe Terrace at Mampei Hotel is a charming spot steeped in history and nostalgia. This delightful café is particularly famous for its royal milk tea and classic apple pie, both of which have ties to John Lennon. Visitors can indulge in the same delicious apple pie that he cherished, made with an abundance of fresh apples.
One of the 3 remaining classical hotel in Japan that has a very rich history. Beautiful European inspired architecture with a warm and rustic interior. This is the place that John Lennon stayed when he was in town. You can ask for the room that he stayed too. You can also savor the authentic cafe latte made according to the specification of Mr Lennon. The small roads and greenery around the hotel are amazing for photos as well as slow strolls. Quiet and mature ambience.

Service is exceptional! Cake set is 2400 yen - comes with a coffee. I would come back and would recommend anyone visiting the area to do so.

(Translated by Google) Mampei Hotel Cafe Terrace is synonymous with traditional apple pie! A five-minute drive from Karuizawa Station, I visited Mampei Hotel Cafe Terrace, which was recently selected for the first time as one of the top 100 cafes in Japan. This was my first visit to the Mampei Hotel in seven years. I arrived around 1:30 PM on a weekday and there was no one waiting. I was able to enter right away. I ordered the Cake Set for 2,400 yen. The traditional apple pie and royal milk tea were hot, so I went for iced coffee instead. It was served in just over five minutes. The apple pie was delicious, packed with tart apples and paired with a flaky crust. The gentle flavor really evokes tradition! I enjoyed it every last bite. This is a small thing, but the total bill was 2,760 yen. There's no breakdown of the service charge, so I wish they'd revise the menu or receipt.

Western restaurant
Kastanie Rotisserie in Karuizawa offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for enjoying family-style portions of delicious rotisserie chicken served with fresh salads and rice. The staff is known for their outstanding service, providing attentive hospitality to guests. The spacious and comfortable setting adds to the overall dining experience. While the staff can be a bit strict about certain rules, such as time limits and food options, the star of the show is undoubtedly the flavorful roasted chicken.
the signature rosted chicken is delicious, cooked just right with skin a bit crispy and meat still tender (would be even better if to be more juicy inside) , and the slices ham as of appetizer is amazing that you can’t miss! price is reasonable to the foods of its kind, and the staff and service is friendly to family with kids which is a big relief for parents 👏

This place is very very busy very very hard to get a table so you must book very very early like WEEKS ahead. Chicken is good and salad was ok (too dressy for me). I think it's a nice spot tho not sure why it is so insanely busy to be honest. Best part of this place is the nice staff. Note there are 5 or so free parking stalls if you're lucky.

We ordered the course menu and it was good value for money. The roast chicken was juicy and the skin crispy! There two sauces and it paired really well with the chicken. Also got gelato for dessert (strawberry, and almond caramel) which were also pretty good! The staff were accommodating and friendly and the food arrived pretty fast. Will definitely come back.

We had a very enjoyable dinner at the restaurant. the food was excellent you felt that the ingredients are high level. The staff were cordially and helpful The ambiance was great . Good food smell when you enter It gives you a warm feeling. The restaurant is packed you must have reservation . The food is western or actually has Australian influence and it’s based on rotisserie . It was an enjoyable evening for us (2 couples)

Signature roast chicken is great, skin is crisp and meat tender. Other side like the garlic scallop and ice cream are also wonderful sides to complement the main dish. May require booking as rather full even on a weekday night.

Delicious roast chicken - crispy skin on the outside and juicy meat on the inside. Definitely worth it! The couple’s course was good bang for the buck. Hope to be back soon bless up

Bakery
Located on Ginza Dori in Kyu-Karuizawa, Boulangerie Asanoya is a popular French bakery that has attracted visitors like John Lennon. The bakery offers a wide variety of European sweet pastries and Japanese-influenced savory snacks, making it a great spot for a westernized breakfast or a quick pick-me-up during shopping. With its early opening hours, this bakery provides an opportunity to indulge in delectable croissants and other delightful treats.
My favourite bakery in Karuizawa. Pastries were amazing. Almond croissant not too sweet you can easily just have it plus & a savoury item.
Eliza B — Google review
Possibly surprising to some, Asanoya offers more than just amazing bread and other goods. In the bake of this establishment, there is a small restaurant area great for lunch. There isn't much seating, so you may end up lucky and be seated right away or have to wait awhile. After you're done eating, I highly recommend trying out some of the freshly baked breads as there are assortments of different flavors. This place is another great store in the area that you must pop in and take a quick look around.
Alex D — Google review
There are many delectable bakery options to choose from. However, seating is limited. Your are to order your prefered bakery at the counter then you will be given a number tag then take this tag for the cashier.

It was my first time trying Asanoya bread. I bought the sandwich and the 3 flavor bread: lemon, blueberry, and green tea. There is also Boulangerie Asanoya in Singapore.

We had breakfast here. You can get bakery items or eat at the small eatery at the back of the store. The bread was great!
Valerie X — Google review
Walked past this pastry store which looked very good and decided to check it out . So they have one section for dining in (proper meal ) and outside some seats for the bread / light food Unfortunately on this day, all the seats were full, nonetheless I managed to buy the bread I wanted and ate outside the shop. Bread was tasty and seems freshly baked

It was crowded on Obon weekend, but we didnt have to wait too long for a table in the small eat-in corner. The soup+bread set for 700yen was reallt worth it. The variety of bread was nice and each tasted amazing. My friend had the sandwich/burger meals and they loved it too.

Passed by this restaurant around lunch time and there were waiting lines. Phoned in to make dinner reservations but they don’t take reservations and said that we wouldn’t need them for dinner. We went soon after opening time. The food was quite good. Recommend that 4 cheese pizza. The crust is crispy around the sides and is quite tasty throughout. They provided honey which wasn’t too sweet and went well with the cheese. Also recommend the lobster and snow crab tagliatelle. Guessing they make their own pasta or have a very good source of premade. Dessert was pretty straight forward. Will probably stop by again to try other dishes. Recommend this restaurant for it’s pasta and pizza.

This restaurant is impressive then I came back again in the next day. 😉 If u love thin and crispy pizza , you should. Anyway, u can request more crispy and the pasta is al dante. Recommended!!

I had a quick lunch here as the bus stop is right across the street. Was seated immediately on a weekday around 12pm. Service and food were both good. I had the creamy uni spaghetti - the spaghetti was good; uni was okay for the price (not the super fresh type you get in a sushi restaurant). The chestnut tiramisu was delightful.
