Toyama in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Toyama, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Toyama offers sweeping views of the Northern Japan Alps, especially along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route with its dramatic snow corridors and mountain scenery. The city is known for its exceptionally fresh seafood from Toyama Bay, including prized firefly squid and yellowtail. Traditional townscapes and glass art museums add cultural interest, while nearby hot spring areas provide a relaxing contrast to outdoor excursions. With good rail links, Toyama also works well as a quieter base for exploring the Hokuriku region.
With favorites like hammock cafe Amaca, Kurobe Dam, and Yuki no Ōtani, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Tateyama Soba and hammock cafe Amaca so you can get the best taste of Toyama while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Nestled in the breathtaking Toyama Prefecture, Kurobe Dam stands as a monumental feat of engineering and natural beauty. Completed in 1964 after seven years of construction, this impressive structure reaches a towering height of 186 meters, making it Japan's tallest dam. Spanning an impressive width of 492 meters, it effectively harnesses the spring runoff from the Northern Japanese Alps along the Kurobe River.
View is so crazy! This is the second time I came here. This time, We're here in the 3rd week of October, which is autumn color. We're at the dam about 9am and walk up to observation on the top. View is so wonder and crazy up there. Worth to walk up, but many stairs and quite steep. Just take time and enjoy the View all the track. We're back here in the evening as well to go back yo ogisawa. It about 4pm.

The dam is damned humongous!!! What a damn dam!! It would most likely be super stunning during summertime. I went during winter season when the spillways don’t operate but I heard they open the spillways to shore to the tourists during the summer season <3
Helena W — Google review
It is a beautiful and magnificent as it can be! It was built at 61 years ago according to our. Tours guide. And 171 people were lost during the construction! The lights rain on the day of our visit did not affect its beauty. The dam and the lake really made this place magical! All four seasons will give this place a different and unique face, so it is worth of coming back sometime! We also saw a performance in front of gift shot even is raining! What a fantastic performance!

Absolutely magnificent! 🍂 Visiting Kurobe Dam in October was unforgettable, the earthy autumn colors, the rainbow terrace, and the scenic views all along the route were stunning. Also as always, Japan is so thoughtful in accommodating tourists, combining the nature and how they made it easy for all people to hike, even though it’s a short uphill hike from the station to the top, the views make it more than worth it. Every step of the trip was memorable, with breathtaking scenery everywhere ✨✨✨

From Murodo I took the tunnel electric bus, ropeway and cable car to arrive at the Kurobe dam at 12:06 pm. It’s a beautiful sunny day in September. The views are impressive.

On my way to Morodo i was wondering why would i even stop to see a dam, but once you arrive there you understand why. There's also an observation deck on the opposite side to e joy the view even more. One of the highlight of the the whole Kurobe alpine route

A magnificent location that shows the courage, determination and resourcefulness of Japanese people. Nature blends in extremely well with man-made structure here.

Scenic Walking Areas
Nestled in the breathtaking Northern Alps, Yuki no Ōtani is a stunning natural wonder that captivates visitors with its towering snow walls. This scenic route, accessible via bus tours and cable car rides, offers an unforgettable experience at an elevation of 2450 meters. Be prepared for unpredictable weather; early season temperatures can plunge below freezing during the day.
Such a splendid sight! The max height of the snow walls changes from year to year depending on snowfall. They open on April 15th, I recommend going as early as possible before the snow melts too much. Recommend to buy the Alpen route tickets in advance on their website. They go on sale about a month before opening and sell out super quickly! Don’t worry if you didn’t get a web ticket, you can also buy on the day at the different see m stations along the way (Toyama, Tateyama, etc.) they keep a lot of tickets closed for online sale so it’s almost always possible to get a ticket on the day too. The queue to the ticket booths can be long in the mornings though. There were a lot and i mean A LOT of people during the operational hours. Don’t be fooled by my pictures, I managed to go before the opening hours through a shuttle from the lodge I was staying at. If you want to experience the full Serene and blissful wonder of the snow walls, I recommend staying overnight too. Although if you don’t mind the people, it would make for a good one day trip.
Helena W — Google review
When we visited in Mid-May 2025, the snow was not as high as few years ago but still in very impressive amount of 16 meters! If possible, do arrive as early as possible because it will be very crewed by 11:00AM. We stayed one night at 彌陀之原, so it was not as many people at the time when we arrived. There are two parts of snow wall you can explore, the narrower one is for the people to walk, the larger and higher one is for buses to use! The 16 meters one is the largest of the two! It is a once in a lifetime experience. Do come if God permits!

Amazing view. Don't forget to bring a real pair of dark sunglasses, that's hurt after a day in white! I was with an organised tour trip, otherwise it might be complicated to plan a whole day from the bottom to the top. Was on 21/04/2025, highest point was 16m, amazing!!! Thanks to the people who work under this extreme condition.

Very happy to be able to make it to this specular snow corridor. We visit from Nagano to Ogizawa. The wait was not long on a weekday. The drive up was equally stunning with views of the mountain sakura.

Tourist must come. This place is very gorgeous and it has a lot of snows and it is easy to do skiing in this park and you take a bus from fu Shan to here it takes around 1 hour to get to this location

May 23rd Still 15meters high wall. It can get crowded obviously, but it's a must visit place in Japan for a reason
Andrea R — Google review
Way too many tourist. Tour groups literally bring their customers up to murodo just for the snow wall. Very disappointed at the walking distance of the snow wall as it was shorter than expected. As of late May, the snow wall has melted to 11m. If you come up to murodo just for the snow wall, suggest you coming up earlier when they just opened. The walk only starts from 930-1500.

Specialty Museums
Nestled at the Wave Namerikawa roadside station, the Hotaruika Museum is a unique gem dedicated to the enchanting firefly squid. This one-of-a-kind museum invites visitors to immerse themselves in an interactive experience that showcases these bioluminescent wonders through captivating light shows and engaging exhibits. The Luminous Light Live Show at the Live Theatre is a highlight, where you can witness the mesmerizing glow of firefly squids in their natural habitat from March 20 to May 31.
Despite most of the signs and descriptions in Japanese, I had a wonderful time in this museum. Just make sure you have google translate and you’re all set! This isn’t a big museum but it kept me fascinated and entertained for a solid two hours. I could not stop learning more about this amazing firefly squid and the culture around it. It’s a shame that they only have the live firefly squid during spring and early summer, but the live demonstration made use of krill so you get a sense of the blue glow in the ocean. Children would enjoy the interactive pool with the cold water and the other exhibits around it. The garden eels are especially cute, and do look out for the endearing (and never-moving) isopod. Have some firefly squid fry at the cafe after visiting the museum, and pick up some delicious snacks to bring home. 5/5 - would definitely come back again!
D L — Google review
A small but very informative museum about "firefly squid" found every spring at Toyama Bay, and also wider education about deep sea species such as the "giant isopod", "glass shrimp" etc. It's like a mini zoo with live exhibitions! A recommendation would be to focus more on the biodoversity value of these deep sea species (instead of contents on how to catch and cook them). Nonetheless, overall a surprising find!
Phoebe L — Google review
I had a good time. I visited since Namerikawa is our town's sister city and I was interested in catching the sights. It's a museum of the firefly squid, but also sort of a tiny aquarium - they have exhibits of nearby fish found in the Toyama region. Ticket price was 620yen which was very fair, cash only. Although they have an English guide, I used my phone extensively for translation since the exhibits are all in Japanese. It's totally understandable - I wouldn't expect everything to be in English in a specialized museum either. The staff were more than happy at using translation where possible and guiding me to the live show when it was time. Immediately before that, I noticed some burly men setting up in a cordoned off part of the museum. I was like "hmm... interesting...". The live show was about 30 to 45 minutes and, although I couldn't use my phone to translate what was being said for this presentation, it ended with an exhibition of the sea fireflies glowing a vibrant blue, made possible by a tub the size of a grand piano which pumped seawater, simulating the ocean environment. Once the live show was over, the burly men were gone and it turns out they were setting up for an exhibit of fish on display in what was practically giant kiddie pool (see pictures attached) including crabs and sea urchins, and the whole thing was rather cute. The visit was a whole lot of fun. Even as a foreigner, they took care to make sure I felt included in the learning experience, and there was plenty of cool stuff to learn.

I went here mid of April to see the firefly squids and get some more info about them. Could see them during a show glowing and also in a container at daylight. Unluckily almost everything was only in Japanese, so I lost quite some info only using google translator. I think that’s still ok as I was told so at the entrance, but I was sad about the living condition for most of the animals. Some were only in a container with nothing but only themselves… please improve and put them in some bigger aquarium with some stones, plants,… inside which comes closer to their natural environment. The boats tour should be booked well in advance. Entering the museum was not an issue.

I will introduce the Hotaruika Museum. It is in Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture. The museum is at a roadside station. You can see the glowing show of firefly squid. You can see it in April and May. The Hotaruika Museum has a restaurant. You can eat delicious tempura, pasta, and pizza. The roadside station has a café. You can eat soft ice cream, hamburgers, and croquettes. The café has a home for garden eels. The soft ice cream is in a waffle cone. The waffle cone has a roll cake and a stick snack on top.

This museum was excellent in giving information and hands-on experience about fire fly squid. The staff didn't speak English the day we went, but the video had English subtitles, and some of the placards did too. It was a great way to spend a few hours learning about this interesting species that only appear in that region. Quick train ride and walk from Toyama.

Uozu Aquarium is a compact aquatic attraction that showcases both marine and freshwater creatures, including a diverse collection of fish species. The facility also boasts a captivating penguin exhibit where visitors can observe these charismatic birds being fed. Moreover, guests can explore an underwater viewing tunnel for a unique perspective on life beneath the surface. Although renovations or updates may be necessary, Uozu Aquarium remains an affordable destination suitable for families with children seeking to bond over nature's wonders.
A small yet impressively diverse aquarium in terms of species variety. Many of the animals on display are ones we’ve never seen in any other aquarium before. The deep-sea section is particularly fascinating and a true highlight. The entire exhibit is very child-friendly, with tanks, aquariums, and terrariums thoughtfully positioned at the perfect height for young visitors. You’ll spend around an hour here, making it ideal for a short visit. On the downside, some of the tanks are quite small and a bit outdated. Nevertheless, it’s a great spot for a brief stopover and definitely worth a visit.

Honestly it's pretty great, I've visited a lot of aquariums and this is really the perfect size and location if you have (younger) kids or just for couple hours, it's not like a full day affair that the bigger aquariums are. It's interesting and just long enough for them to stay intrigued, there's a wide selection of weird fish, large central viewing pool with a tunnel, some jelly fish, amazonian / tropical jungle river animals, and even doctor fish you can touch at the end which kids will love. Couple seals and even penguins. Theres a place to each outside serving your standard selection of ramen, udon , curry etc basically easy staples at reasonable price. A large park right next to the place with some slides and activities and an amusement park ( free to enter) across the street with various rides and a bug trampoline for kids up to 12 years old can use. All in all totally worth your time for a easy relaxing day out with minimal logistics for a family or just a date.

Compact aquarium with interesting activities and I really enjoyed the variety of sea creatures at the aquarium even though i couldn’t understand most of the information in Japanese (I used google translate for most). Even on a weekend, the crowd was manageable. My children enjoyed it very much!

It is said to be the oldest aquarium in Japan. The explanations are very concise and easy to understand, and are designed to allow visitors to learn while having fun. Although the building is old, it is well maintained and clean, and you can tour the entire aquarium in an hour.

Kurobe Gorge Trolley Train

The Kurobe Gorge, situated in Chubu-Sangaku National Park, is a renowned V-shaped gorge in Japan and holds the distinction of being designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a Special Natural Monument. The area boasts primeval forests and crystal-clear streams that offer breathtaking views, transitioning from fresh greenery in early summer to deep green hues during the season and vibrant reds in autumn. Visitors can embark on an exploration of the steep gorge via a trolley train.
Actually awesome. The views were amazing and all the staff/workers were so lovely and enthusiastic. I've been mountain climbing in this region quite a lot, so it was nice seeing the mountains from the railway. It was also a lot less crowded than I expected (no queueing required for on-the-day tickets although it was a weekday). Totally worth the trip from Kanazawa.
サンゴ礁 — Google review
Extreamly beautifull view. But you have to be prepare that for the half of the ride you will be in tunels. If you sit on the wrong part of the train you won't have the best view. Sit on the right part when you departure and on the left when going back to base station. At the last stop you have about 20 minutes but there ist nothing to do and no good view so you can go to the toilet and sit in the train. There are station along the way but if you get off there is no garantee you will get in on the next train so its a bit risky. All in all its a great expirience and i recomend you going there.

20251107 gorgeous views of the autumn leaves! I like the open car way more, although we booked the close window ("relax car"). To feel the breeze and the smell of the forests. Beware of stinky bugs and loud noise thou (my friend is afraid of the bugs, but they fly away soon if you keep on moving, taking pictures).
E. L — Google review
We went for fall foliage. It was beautiful. We didn't reserve the tickets. In order to reserve tickets, you should do at least 2 days in advance. We chose to ride the open-air car since we want to take pictures without the glare of glass on windows in the enclosed cars. Everything was well organized and ran smoothly. Remember to bring a jacket, it's cold. Because there is no reserve seats, if you want to have the view fully, choose seat on the right side. Because of the damage caused by the earthquake in 2024, the railway only runs between Unazukionsen Station and Nekomata Station. It stops at Nekomata Station for 20 minutes. There is not much to do in Nekomata Station though. I just wish the train ran at a bit slower speed at major attractions. It wasn't fast, but I wanted to be able to "feel" rather than just passing by.

Great views, very brisk for fall, so bring a coat. I would recommend concert ear plugs if riding in the open seat cars as the rails can be piercingly loud.

Scenic Train Ride Weather Note: Be prepared for the elements. The day we rode was 12^\circ\text{C} and cloudy, and the standard cabin is completely open-air (zero back support, plus wind and bugs). Pro Tip: Upgrade to the closed cabin for an extra ¥600. It has backrests and protection from the weather, making the two-hour round trip much more comfortable. Photography Warning: While the views are scenic, be aware that getting a "picture-perfect" shot is not guaranteed. The view is frequently obstructed by poles, wiring, and cabin structures, making it challenging to capture clean, unobstructed photos. Schedule: Boarded at 1:11 PM. The journey included one quick stop for passengers and a dedicated 20-minute break for photos/restrooms. Total duration: \approx 2 hours. Parking: Very convenient. The lot is < 5 minutes from the station. Payment is tracked by your license plate number; you simply enter it into the machine upon exit.

Tateyama Soba is a must-try when visiting the mountains, offering surprisingly tasty and bouncy soba noodles served in a delicious Dashi stock with crisp shrimp tempura. Not sure why it’s highly rated. I have been having soba noodle from different areas in Nagano. This is probably the worst I have got. The shrimp tempura isn’t hot enough and it has turned soft already while serving. If you don’t wanna queue, go after 2pm shall be fine.

(Translated by Google) It's a stylish cafe where you can sit in a hammock, but since there is only one hammock per seat, you have to take turns, and eating while sitting in a hammock may be difficult for some people. You can't just get a drink, so each adult must order a parfait or a meal. The parfait is delicious, but it costs about 2,000 yen, so you should be prepared to pay around 3,000 yen for a drink set. The parking lot and the location of the shop are difficult to find, so it's best to check in advance. (Translated by Google) I went to Amacca, which I had been curious about for a long time. I went on a Saturday around 1pm and was seated right away. Seats are counter seats and table seats. There are also plenty of hammock seats. I parked my car in a nearby free downtown parking lot. Takeout available. I received the "Aged Roast Pork Bowl (1,650 yen)". I ordered and it arrived in about 5 minutes. I'm glad it's early. The taste is quite delicious, and it feels like a bowl of sticky raw pork topped with two delicious sauces. The sauce is delicious and the roast pork is also very good. Although it was a little pricey, it was a restaurant that I would want to come back to again. Anyway, it was delicious. The parfait was also popular and many customers ordered it. To be honest, the hammock is difficult to sit in, and it was difficult to eat while sitting in the hammock lol, but it looks good for children and couples. It was a delicious restaurant that made me want to come back again!! ️Recommended!!

(Translated by Google) The food was served quickly, and I was impressed with the taste and ingredients of the parfait. Each parfait has an illustration explaining the various flavors, and I could feel their love and commitment to parfait. The roast pork lunch had a very good balance of tender meat and vegetables, and it was a dish that both looked and tasted good and seemed to be something that women would enjoy. If you had leftover strawberry milk, you could take it home with a lid and a new straw. Below is a look at the store. I visited during the Obon holiday. When I entered the store, it was full, so I had to write my name down, wait outside the store, and when it was my turn, I could call them to avoid crowds and take precautions against the coronavirus. I entered the store around 13:00, and it was a relatively small store with 3 table seats and 2 counter seats for 2 groups (2 people each), and it was a popular store with 3 groups waiting. I thought it was a good system because I could get a call after walking around the area for about 15 minutes looking at the cityscape. It is a pre-payment system where you enter the store, order and pay, and then you are seated. Both lunch and parfait are served with a limited number of items to shorten the time it takes to serve them, so they arrive immediately after you are seated. It wasn't a pre-made product, but the staff at the store cooperated, and the guidance was very efficient, and the service with a smile didn't make me feel uncomfortable. He also kindly taught me how to sit in a hammock. Cold drinks are self-service. Please try our stylish water server. Due to coronavirus precautions, we were asked to eat within an hour of being seated, but the food and parfait were served quickly, so we didn't have to rush and enjoyed the food. To express the level of efficiency of the staff at the shop, it was like a hairdresser who was skillfully serving customers. When I visited, the customer base was about 50/50 male and female, with a lot of female customers. There isn't much parking and it's hard to find the surrounding area, but there's a guide posted on the door, so I think it's a good idea to drive there and ask the staff.

(Translated by Google) I couldn't find the store and passed by it a couple of times, but it was there. After entering the store, you order, pay, and then take a seat. It seems that they are famous for their parfaits, and when using the restaurant, it seems that each adult must order one lunch or one parfait, and it seems that coffee alone is not available. The parfait cost 2,310 yen and contained various kinds of cream, jelly, mousse, strawberries, gummy bears, and many other things. It was 5,500 yen for 4 people, but if it was 4 parfaits it would have been over 8,000 yen 💦 (Original)
