The 35 best parks and gardens in Toyama

We were randomly taking a stroll in the beautiful city of Toyama and then we saw this park on the sign board and thought of going to the park. It was such a sweet surprise. One of the best parks it was with a beautiful canal throughout the park. There was a fountain show too with music, it was very nice. It’s a huge park and plenty of space throughout the park. Do visit if you are closer to Toyama Station.

A really nice park. A scenic lake and jogging track. On a clear sky the view should be spectacular… we went on a cloudy and drizzling day. You can also enjoy a nice cup of coffee and enjoy the view at Starbucks Kansui Park. Nice!!

Nice to walk at night when the lights are lit up. Or have coffee at Starbucks with a view. Try to go up the observatory building it has an elevator and viewing deck.

Pretty park at the heart of Toyama city. Petite canal to the sea ends here and you can take a canal boat from here. Clean and contemporary looking, offers a good place to relax in summer.

Was there to visit the popular starbuck. Scenic and quiet park. There's an observation deck too.

If you're visiting Toyama during cherry blossom season, Kansui Park is an absolute 'must-visit' place with the photos saying it all!

The dam is damned humongous!!! What a damn dam!! It would most likely be super stunning during summertime. I went during winter season when the spillways don’t operate but I heard they open the spillways to shore to the tourists during the summer season <3

It is a beautiful and magnificent as it can be! It was built at 61 years ago according to our. Tours guide. And 171 people were lost during the construction! The lights rain on the day of our visit did not affect its beauty. The dam and the lake really made this place magical! All four seasons will give this place a different and unique face, so it is worth of coming back sometime! We also saw a performance in front of gift shot even is raining! What a fantastic performance!

Absolutely magnificent! 🍂 Visiting Kurobe Dam in October was unforgettable, the earthy autumn colors, the rainbow terrace, and the scenic views all along the route were stunning. Also as always, Japan is so thoughtful in accommodating tourists, combining the nature and how they made it easy for all people to hike, even though it’s a short uphill hike from the station to the top, the views make it more than worth it. Every step of the trip was memorable, with breathtaking scenery everywhere ✨✨✨

From Murodo I took the tunnel electric bus, ropeway and cable car to arrive at the Kurobe dam at 12:06 pm. It’s a beautiful sunny day in September. The views are impressive.

On my way to Morodo i was wondering why would i even stop to see a dam, but once you arrive there you understand why. There's also an observation deck on the opposite side to e joy the view even more. One of the highlight of the the whole Kurobe alpine route

I visited on August 9, 2025, and was lucky to see a rainbow on the water under the dam. It was absolutely incredible

Great modern beautiful architecture to explore! There are free fare areas to feel modern art and architecture around the museum and outside of the museum!

This is a very modern, clean and well organised museum. You would spend max 30 minutes as they have limited items on permanent exhibit. Somehow they have emphasis on chairs by having dozens of them on display. The surprise was that they have paintings of Chagall, Picasso and Taro Okamoto which are all worth seeing. Some other thoughts: Restaurant on 3rd floor is great. They have limited menu options but their meat and vegetables are freshly prepared. And they also have a good canal view. Location / Access is problematic as taxis are the only realistic option to get there. I think the local authority should consider running bus services if they want more tourists to visit this beautiful museum. I took a taxi from Toyama Station but had a bad experience as the driver was rude and deliberately driving at slow speed to earn more cash.

I only visited the museum shop and the onomatopoeia rooftop playground. Both were lovely, especially the playground! The concept is interesting and it is suitable for adults and children. You also get a great view of the mountain range in the distance.

Great views from interesting building and regular interesting exhibitions. Don't forget the roof garden. Facilities for kids to play and enjoy. Watch for lovely and unique uniforms worn by staff designed by isse miyake. 20 mins walk from station.

Beautiful architecture as always from Japanese museums. The collection when I visited was beautifully collected also (the chairs). Worth to pay for the extra exhibits.

A nice modern and contemporary art museum. A slightly different art museum from the rest. Worth a visit. There’s a roof top garden cum playground too.

Pretty disappointing actually, there are definitely better museums to go to... but the view from the roof is fantastic!

Sad to come here when there are no more cherry blossoms (end May). Very normal park as everything is green. The trees near the castle is home to many birds. Not sure what are their names but I suspect they are herons. If you read this and you know the name of the bird, can you kindly leave a review. Thank you.

Sakura🌸 in full bloom on the day I visited, though cloudy. Not too much visitors perhaps due to the bad weather. But environment is nice and quiet, and I guess it would be even nicer to view this place with a river boat trip!

A hidden gem in Toyama. Just a couple of minutes walk from Toyama station. It is a small little park and not much crowd. During autumn, the views can be pretty stunning. Do walk along the canal below with a good camera in the early morning. You will be amazed by what you may capture through the lens.

The vibe is good. In toyama castle all information were written in Japanese so it's not quiet a good idea going inside cause you have to pay the fee.

A very nice spot in Toyama where you can enjoy a stunning view of the Japanese Alps, the sea, and trains passing by — all in one frame. It’s a must-visit when in Toyama. Highly recommended to everyone! Be sure to check the train schedule in advance and reserve your photo spot for the best experience.

Beautiful coastal line where you can see the magnificent Sea of Japan. There is a beautiful walking foot path also along this coastal line to enjoy a stroll. Also opposite to This, there is a cafe shop from where you can sit and enjoy the view of the sea while sipping coffee or tea or while having ice cream. There are also toilets and a good place to sit and enjoy the view.

Walking distance from Amaharashi station to the point of the scene. Cloudy on Oct 22, 2025 but you can see the shadow of mountain a little bit. Not bad The train will come in every 1.30 hr.

Stunning views of the Onnaiwa Rock, with the Tateyama Mountains in the background. The area is walking distance from Amaharashi Station, which in turn is accessible from Takaoka via the Himi Line. The beach is sandy, so be careful when trying to walk on the rocks as the sand may affect your balance while walking. There are lots of ducks swimming which makes for a charming sight. There is also a nearby roadside station where you can have snacks and buy souvenirs. The roadside station also has an observatory deck. Please consult the train timetables so that you can plan your visit, if visiting by train.

Such a picturesque little corner. Unfortunately weather was bad, so we couldn't see any snowy mountain, but still worth it. The small shrine, the cave, the railway, the islet and the landscape all mixed together create such a perfect synergy

A short distance walk to Amaharashi JR station. Train passes right next to the coast. Beautiful location to see the Alps nearby. Unfortunately, no snow caps were seen during our visit. There's a nearby restaurant to recharge yourself and admire the landscape view at the same time. Visited on October 22 ,2025

28/10/2025. Decent weather, clear sky and amazing landscape. Able to see 立山連峰. A beautiful and peaceful seaside. A must-go spot if you have a trip to Kanazawa.

Toyama Castle truly surprised me with its serene beauty and historical significance. While the original castle is no longer standing, the reconstructed main gate and the carefully maintained grounds offer a wonderful glimpse into its past. Strolling through the park, you can almost picture the lords and samurai who once walked those paths. The Toyama Municipal Folk Museum, located within the castle grounds, is a fantastic addition. It provides excellent context about the castle's history and the local culture. I particularly enjoyed learning about the Maeda clan's influence on the region. What struck me most was the tranquility of the setting. The lush greenery, the gentle flow of the Jinzu River nearby, and the peaceful atmosphere create a lovely oasis in the heart of the city. It's a perfect spot for a relaxing walk, a picnic, or simply to reflect. Even without the original keep, Toyama Castle offers a compelling experience. It's a testament to the city's commitment to preserving its heritage and a delightful place to spend an afternoon. I highly recommend a visit to anyone interested in Japanese history or simply seeking a peaceful escape.

It's well restored and in good keep. It's quite small compared to other Japanese castles and you can wander around the ground and castle in under an hour. The observation deck is nice and breezy.

The castle in Toyama is small but has a really nice garden around it with lots of trees and a river. Even though it was already early winter, the autumn leaves were still so beautiful with all the colors and there's no one else around the area so I got to take as many photos as I like and just enjoy a nice stroll around the park. The river was under maintenance so the boat is not running, otherwise that would also be a nice option to go around. The tourist information centre staff is also super friendly and I receive a wooden bookmark gift from them.

It’s an interesting place to walk around outside and enjoy the lovely gardens at the rear. As it’s almost totally reconstructed inside I felt little need to go inside as I’ve seen many bigger and more original castles such as Himeji. We particularly liked the mandarin ducks in the moat

The surrounding gardens and stone walls give you a glimpse into the history and offer plenty of scenic spots for photos. If you’re in Toyama, don’t skip it. It’s not a grand, towering castle like some others in Japan, but that’s what makes it so charming—understated, serene, and a perfect way to start the day.

This is the castle of the MAEDA family, who were the lords of Toyama. The old stone walls and gate remain. The main building was recently rebuilt based on the original design, and the interior is now a historical museum. The MAEDA’s armor helmet was impressive because it has 127 centimeters length with unusual shape.

Architecturally, this building is remarkable – combining historical charm with a modern sense of space and light. It houses several well-curated exhibitions and galleries, each offering a different cultural perspective. The top floor is dedicated to the art of glass and glassblowing, featuring a thoughtfully designed exhibition with impressive glass installations that highlight both craftsmanship and creativity. While admission is somewhat on the expensive side, the overall experience offers a lot of cultural and artistic value. The lower levels include public libraries for both adults and children, providing a quiet and welcoming space for reading and relaxation. We spent over an hour there browsing through books and enjoying the calm atmosphere. Overall, a visit is worthwhile for anyone with an interest in art, design, or architecture.

I never know glass can be made into such as amazing artwork. The admission is only 200yen. The paid exhibition spends onto floor 4 and 6. I wish there are more items on display. The building itself consist of a public library as well.

I only can appreciate some of the larger scale glass are or the glass sculpture with the light effect. For other smaller glass sculptures on display, which to me, it’s a dust collector. I’m apologize for not understand the art form or the creativity of those artists. One good and positive thing about this museum is the price of snacks like cheesecake and chestnut 🎂 cake etc is very fairly priced also very delicious! Coffee is also very good!

Beautiful museum to visit. The architecture of the building with its wood and glass structures evokes a calm and peaceful feel blending in with the beauty of the glass art pieces. There was a piano recital in the foyer when we visited. In all a must visit when visiting Toyama.

The building itself is a stunning piece of architecture by the renowned architect Kengo Kuma, with a façade inspired by the shimmering ice dikes of the Tateyama mountains and warm cedar interiors. Inside, you’ll discover an impressive permanent glass art exhibition and a beautiful library. A must-visit when in Toyama!

The museum looks big. Only 3 floors (Starts from Floor 6, then 4, and 3). Some art prices are really spectacular. The other floors are just book stores. There is also a coffee shop inside and has a nice menu. They serve in one of the best glass crockeries. It’s allowed to take pics Inside, but not allowed to share on any social media channels or on google. So, I won’t be able to upload pics here 😊. There is also a museum shop inside where you can purchase some souvenirs and other glass selections.

Architect: Kengo Kuma. Love the sleek exterior juxtaposed by the rustic interior of cedar beams. Entrance fee: we only paid 200yen but you could pay more if you'd like to catch the special exhibition. Exhibits: the permanent exhibition of dave chihuly works was a crowd pleaser and certainly eye catching. However I preferred the understated glass art by japanese, korean, and czech artists - photography was not allowed for that exhibition though. Since toyama has a rich glassmaking history, I think it's worth visiting this museum. Dont miss the gift store too!

Beautiful park, especially during spring when the cherry blossom trees are at their best. Went on a Sunday when families play and picnic. This is also a great place for fantastic street food. Very enjoyable visit.

It is a bit puzzling that there aren't many people here, it is such a nice garden. You will find a shrine and can buy souvenirs. If you bring bread, you can feed large koi fish and cute turtles.

This incredibly beautiful park, is only a few minutes walk from the famous Takaoka Daibutsu (Great Buddha) and is both free, and open 24 hours. It was once the site of the Takaoka Castle however there is almost no evidence of the castle remaining. It is most definately worth a visit.

The site features a magnificent stone structure and exterior formations of a 17th century Japanese castle. It is the only castle site in Japan that remains almost completely intact. Unfortunately, the castle buildings no longer exist, but there is plenty to enjoy. For castle enthusiasts, this is a site with a lot to see. There is a large free parking lot near the site. There is also no admission fee.

Went on 23 Nov 2024, only left lesser than 30% of the autumn leafs on the whole place. May look great if it's 1 week earlier. Some group of people are catching pokemon go inside. I suppose is a special spawn area for pokemon go

Very nice park to walk through and around

This is a great destination for flower lovers when they're in season. In addition to its famous cherry blossoms, it has heritage plum trees with a variety of different colors of blossom. It's also family friendly with a zoo and spacious park grounds. There are a variety of full facilities, including some excellent restaurants. Do keep in mind that it's nationally famous and so can become incredibly crowded during it's busy seasons.

The castle, or statues were okay to look at. The park is the real draw. With no English signs it was not possible to understand the significance or back story of the location. Sat under the pagoda with the golden Phoenix/crane and ate a snack before heading on to the park portion of the grounds.

Beautiful autumn colors!!!!

Honestly it's pretty great, I've visited a lot of aquariums and this is really the perfect size and location if you have (younger) kids or just for couple hours, it's not like a full day affair that the bigger aquariums are. It's interesting and just long enough for them to stay intrigued, there's a wide selection of weird fish, large central viewing pool with a tunnel, some jelly fish, amazonian / tropical jungle river animals, and even doctor fish you can touch at the end which kids will love. Couple seals and even penguins. Theres a place to each outside serving your standard selection of ramen, udon , curry etc basically easy staples at reasonable price. A large park right next to the place with some slides and activities and an amusement park ( free to enter) across the street with various rides and a bug trampoline for kids up to 12 years old can use. All in all totally worth your time for a easy relaxing day out with minimal logistics for a family or just a date.

Compact aquarium with interesting activities and I really enjoyed the variety of sea creatures at the aquarium even though i couldn’t understand most of the information in Japanese (I used google translate for most). Even on a weekend, the crowd was manageable. My children enjoyed it very much!

Like: -not crowded -afew interesting photo spots set up among the tanks and fishes -watching feeding and antics of seal feeding times was fun -a good collection of fish-aquatic life despite it’s small size -support local Dislikes: -no gift shop

A small aquarium with the collections of different species of fish. And it’s main attraction is the penguin. It needed to be renovate or to update. Perfect for kidz and family bonding.

It is said to be the oldest aquarium in Japan. The explanations are very concise and easy to understand, and are designed to allow visitors to learn while having fun. Although the building is old, it is well maintained and clean, and you can tour the entire aquarium in an hour.

It’s a wonderful place,specially for kids, couples and for those who want to see the nature of God. Must visit with family.

Small but very complete Shinkansen(Hokuriku line), rail, tram & bus station in Toyama, Japan. Good connection to Alpine Route. Has a department store/restaurant building next it it. Small, but easily accessible. Great onigiri store. Has a convenience store & several restaurants including a McDonalds. Very good seafood - Toyama is known for its seafood & skiing nearby.

A huge station with complete facilities and easy access. What I love the most is the integrated tram system right inside the building, so you can easily hop right from the shinkansen gate to explore the city without walking too far. The JR West office also provides us with the unique design of ICOCA cards! Easily one of the best JR train stations in all of Japan.

The Hokuriku Shinkansen line was extended to this station in 2015, and the station building was beautifully renovated. There are some souvenir shops, restaurants, and hotels adjoining the station building. The tram is convenient for sightseeing. It is interesting that there are many designs of cars, classical one, advanced one, imitated police car, and so on.

Station is not too big but has all the amenities that you may need. Comfortable waiting areas and clean restrooms. Staff was helpful for nonnative speakers. I don’t know the language and was able to easily get around quickly. Much busier on Sunday than it was on Friday.

A JR station stop on the Hokuriku shinkansen line, and a great jumping off point to many excellent local train routes - including Takayama Line for Takayama and connection to Shirakawa, or Toyama Chiho Railway to Tateyama and enroute to Kurobe Alpine Route including Murodo, Kurobe Dam, etc. Gentetsu Toyama local train station is right next door. A big station with souvenirs store, nearby malls such as Maroot and Kitokito market Toyamarche.

Beautiful station with the Shinkansen, JR local trains, Hida Express and local street car all in one spot. Has food venues but not as many like Osaka, Nagoya or Tokyo. The waiting areas are clean and modern. There are plenty of lockers, vending machines, tourist information department, help desk, 7 Eleven, and a few cafes. They even had a farmer's market outside when I stopped by. There is a decent mall that is also connected. What isn't there to like?

The Tateyama Mountains rise snow-white above glass towers. Canals mirror the sky; trams hum quietly through clean streets. Toyama glows like serenity made city. Tourist Tip: Transfer hub for Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route. Visit Toyama Glass Museum and sushi bars serving local white shrimp. Stay overnight for clear mountain views.

They have a mizu asobi place for free. You can park your car and take the little train to the water play area. They are extending the playground next to it. Just wish they had more shades.

I believe that Taiko-yama land is best place with kid's to go in Toyama prefecture! As you can see from the map, you can walk and run also ride the bike furthermore ride the boat in the huge park. In addition, you can rent bike not only by your self but with your kid's. The remark for me is Kodomo mirai kan( KId's future building) In this building there are some big jungle gym from ground floor to 3rd floor! kid's can climb every floor and steps and tube. In Toyama prefecture, there are many rainy days and heavy snow in winter season, so such kind of indoor facilities are very good for kid's health and free from the weather stress. You had better to bring lunch-box.There is few stores in this park.

Nice place for family picnic, biking and jogging.

Good fun taking a cruise down to the lock. Relatively quiet on a weekday - not sure how the weekend might look. Unfortunately we couldn't make the times for the visit to the port so we just did the round trip back to the park. But it was interesting to visit the control room and see the lock in action. Commentary mostly in Japanese when we went - as expected and the guide was very helpful and tried to explain as much as he could

This was on the top of my list of "things to do" in Toyama... I love boats, and this was a brilliant trip, and a good excuse to go to the beach down in Iwase. If you get a ticket to Iwase, you don't get a return ticket by boat, but they do provide a tram ticket to take you back. I really enjoyed going through the Nakajima lock and experiencing a water elevator, and I loved getting a look at all the surrounding areas from the river, and all the bugs and birds! There is a tour guide, but this is in Japanese only. It was definitely worth the money! I recommend taking the route the full way to Iwase and spending the day there or afternoon there.

Nice experience going through the Nakajima lock. 60minutes to Iwase and 30min tram ride back to Toyama train station. ¥2500 each adult. Only 2 boat trips per day on weekdays all the way to/from Iwase. Would've been good if they provide audio commentary in English. Only Japanese tour guide was providing commentary.

We did the long tour from the park to the harbour. It's important to know that the lock is the highlight of this tour. We were hoping to see a lot of the city and some beautiful scenery but it's mostly just construction sites and industrial buildings. The tour guide talked about lots of random things (in Japanese) to fill the time, many of which you cannot see from the boat. If you're a boat enthusiast, go for it.

Consider it's free to entery, it's a great place to view the city on a lovely day. We were lucky with the weather, and it was a short wait for the lift going to the observation floor also. The park also equipped with some attractions such as merry go round, mini roller coaster, and tiny pedal boat in a small lake. You can enjoy the attractions for 200 yen flat. For the boat 800 yen for 15 minutes. At the time we came, it was almost empty so the place felt like our own. We spent all day to enjoy all the park offered. The entrance ticket for the zoo is 500 yen. If you come using public transport please planned it carefully cause only few busses go there. Recommended route is to stop at Kureha station and take the city bus which cost only 100 yen. However this bus only run 3-4 times a day from the station.

A lovely little park next to the damned up area of the Sho River. Recommended for a 30 minute walk or to enjoy the picknic opportunities. There are a couple restaurants close to the main parking area, which also includes a tourist centre.

We took a bus from Matsumoto bus terminal and got off at Taisho Pond. Then continue walking to Kappa Bridge Kamikochi. Along the way, we enjoy the beautiful views. Along a clear and clean river. While taking photos of trees with leaves starting to turn yellow, wow that's cool. Especially with several mountains in the background. The road is very friendly for elderly people, flat and clean. Assisted by clear information boards regarding directions, types of plants and much more. The good thing is that there are lots of clean, well-maintained toilet facilities.

Spectacular views that are quite easily reached by public transport. Lots of accommodation available in the mountains too. If you like hiking and mountaineering, you will love this national park.

Chubu-Sangaku is an incredible vista of a huge National Park dotted with high alpine mountain peaks. It's popular for the mountain ridge walks, as well as summiting one or more of the mountain peaks. If one is more interested in less strenuous and shorter hikes, then many options await including the Kurobe Alpine Route traveling from the west side through Tateyama, Murodo, Kurobe dam, etc. or Kamikochi from the east side. You could not go wrong with either one of those options and will be treated to a beautiful mountain vistas.

A lovely place fore novice and experienced hikers. The accommodations there however are more premium and less hiking style. I recommend the camp site. I've had seen comparisons to Yosemite before. Don't be fooled, it's a very nice place but nothing like Yosemite. They are both valleys and have bears, there the similarity ends. If you get lucky you get to see some monkeys :) Oh and always bring bad weather gear.

We had a hike from Kurobishi all the way to Happoike Pond. You can get a free shuttle from Hakuba station to Kurobishi parking lot, then take a lift. Not that hard, but definitely need hiking shoes. You may go up to Karamatsu Dake if the weather is great. It was Marvelous day when we visited.

Super awesome view. It is really nice to take the train and just enjoy the scenery. Choose the open train sp you can enjoy the wind too. A very good place for calm meditation. You can even just stay still and breath. Life is good.

This place in Kamikochi is incredible. There are countless trails to many peaks, each offering a new view ever more beautiful still. The sights and views on each trail offer an entirely unique experience for hikers unlike I've seen anywhere before
