Museums
The Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design is a stunning modern building located on the riverbank, offering sweeping city views from its rooftop. The museum features works by renowned Western artists like Picasso and Warhol, as well as prominent Japanese and local artists. Visitors can explore three floors, with the upper levels dedicated to exhibitions and the ground floor housing a shop and restaurant.
A Captivating Museum Experience for Art Enthusiasts Nestled in the heart of the city, this museum stands as a beacon for art lovers, seamlessly blending architectural brilliance with cultural richness. Its design is a testament to modern aesthetics: soaring ceilings, an abundance of natural light, and an expansive glass gallery that bathes the interior in a luminous glow. The structure’s transparent façade not only invites daylight but also offers visitors a panoramic view of the urban landscape. Ascending to the rooftop terrace, one is greeted with a breathtaking vista of the city skyline. This elevated space transcends traditional museum offerings by incorporating interactive art installations and play areas, catering to both adults and children. It’s a place where creativity meets recreation, allowing visitors to engage with art in a dynamic environment. The museum’s commitment to rotating exhibitions ensures a fresh and evolving experience. During our visit, we explored a fascinating chair exhibition that resonated deeply with us as Viennese natives. Among the showcased pieces were iconic designs by the renowned Gebrüder Thonet. Their innovative use of bentwood techniques revolutionized furniture design in the 19th century, and their chairs remain emblematic of Viennese craftsmanship. Notably, the Leopold Museum in Vienna houses several of these masterpieces, including the elegant “Sessel für das Café Museum” from circa 1898, reflecting the minimalist ethos of architect Adolf Loos . This museum not only celebrates artistic expression but also offers an immersive experience that bridges the gap between art, design, and community engagement.

Great modern beautiful architecture to explore! There are free fare areas to feel modern art and architecture around the museum and outside of the museum!
KIICHIRO K — Google review
This is a very modern, clean and well organised museum. You would spend max 30 minutes as they have limited items on permanent exhibit. Somehow they have emphasis on chairs by having dozens of them on display. The surprise was that they have paintings of Chagall, Picasso and Taro Okamoto which are all worth seeing. Some other thoughts: Restaurant on 3rd floor is great. They have limited menu options but their meat and vegetables are freshly prepared. And they also have a good canal view. Location / Access is problematic as taxis are the only realistic option to get there. I think the local authority should consider running bus services if they want more tourists to visit this beautiful museum. I took a taxi from Toyama Station but had a bad experience as the driver was rude and deliberately driving at slow speed to earn more cash.
MASAAKI H — Google review
I only visited the museum shop and the onomatopoeia rooftop playground. Both were lovely, especially the playground! The concept is interesting and it is suitable for adults and children. You also get a great view of the mountain range in the distance.
YJ K — Google review
Great views from interesting building and regular interesting exhibitions. Don't forget the roof garden. Facilities for kids to play and enjoy. Watch for lovely and unique uniforms worn by staff designed by isse miyake. 20 mins walk from station.
Julius A — Google review
Beautiful architecture as always from Japanese museums. The collection when I visited was beautifully collected also (the chairs). Worth to pay for the extra exhibits.
陳Jimson — Google review
A nice modern and contemporary art museum. A slightly different art museum from the rest. Worth a visit. There’s a roof top garden cum playground too.
Ong Y — Google review
Pretty disappointing actually, there are definitely better museums to go to... but the view from the roof is fantastic!

Museums
The Toyama Glass Art Museum, located in the modern Kirari Building designed by architect Kuma Kengo, is home to a remarkable collection of contemporary glass art from both Japanese and international artists. The museum features permanent exhibitions such as the Collection Exhibition, Glass Art Passage, and the Glass Art Garden showcasing works by renowned artist Dale Chihuly.
This museum is fun to visit, it also have a library inside. The whole building has a lot of natural lighting, making photos look amazing at many angles. The use of wood and glass makes the overall design minimalist and clean. The glass installation is so colorful and looks mesmerizing. There's also special exhibitions from time to time. I made my own glass bead bracelet at the gift store, wish I could buy some of those beautiful glass deco. the staffs are super friendly.

Architecturally, this building is remarkable – combining historical charm with a modern sense of space and light. It houses several well-curated exhibitions and galleries, each offering a different cultural perspective. The top floor is dedicated to the art of glass and glassblowing, featuring a thoughtfully designed exhibition with impressive glass installations that highlight both craftsmanship and creativity. While admission is somewhat on the expensive side, the overall experience offers a lot of cultural and artistic value. The lower levels include public libraries for both adults and children, providing a quiet and welcoming space for reading and relaxation. We spent over an hour there browsing through books and enjoying the calm atmosphere. Overall, a visit is worthwhile for anyone with an interest in art, design, or architecture.
Yasmin G — Google review
I never know glass can be made into such as amazing artwork. The admission is only 200yen. The paid exhibition spends onto floor 4 and 6. I wish there are more items on display. The building itself consist of a public library as well.
Gordon K — Google review
I only can appreciate some of the larger scale glass are or the glass sculpture with the light effect. For other smaller glass sculptures on display, which to me, it’s a dust collector. I’m apologize for not understand the art form or the creativity of those artists. One good and positive thing about this museum is the price of snacks like cheesecake and chestnut 🎂 cake etc is very fairly priced also very delicious! Coffee is also very good!
Steven C — Google review
Beautiful museum to visit. The architecture of the building with its wood and glass structures evokes a calm and peaceful feel blending in with the beauty of the glass art pieces. There was a piano recital in the foyer when we visited. In all a must visit when visiting Toyama.
Yvonne C — Google review
The building itself is a stunning piece of architecture by the renowned architect Kengo Kuma, with a façade inspired by the shimmering ice dikes of the Tateyama mountains and warm cedar interiors. Inside, you’ll discover an impressive permanent glass art exhibition and a beautiful library. A must-visit when in Toyama!
Addaia M — Google review
The museum looks big. Only 3 floors (Starts from Floor 6, then 4, and 3). Some art prices are really spectacular. The other floors are just book stores. There is also a coffee shop inside and has a nice menu. They serve in one of the best glass crockeries. It’s allowed to take pics Inside, but not allowed to share on any social media channels or on google. So, I won’t be able to upload pics here 😊. There is also a museum shop inside where you can purchase some souvenirs and other glass selections.
Lakshmi — Google review
Architect: Kengo Kuma. Love the sleek exterior juxtaposed by the rustic interior of cedar beams. Entrance fee: we only paid 200yen but you could pay more if you'd like to catch the special exhibition. Exhibits: the permanent exhibition of dave chihuly works was a crowd pleaser and certainly eye catching. However I preferred the understated glass art by japanese, korean, and czech artists - photography was not allowed for that exhibition though. Since toyama has a rich glassmaking history, I think it's worth visiting this museum. Dont miss the gift store too!

(Translated by Google) The museum opened in September 1961 as the "Sato Museum of Art (Foundation)". The late "Sato Sukuro", a businessman and tea master from Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture, was the core of the museum, and it was renamed the Toyama Museum of Art in 1963. From 1991 to 1993, it was expanded to commemorate the 30th anniversary of its establishment, and was renamed the Toyama Sato Museum of Art (Foundation) in April 1998. In addition to the exhibition room, the museum also relocated the Sato family's two teahouses "Sukean" and "Ryu-tei-an", as well as a shoin-zashiki building made entirely of cypress wood. In April of the same year, the building and all the collections were donated to Toyama City and operated together with the Toyama City Folk Museum. (The above is taken from the official website, translated by myself) (Using the common ticket with Toyama Sato Memorial Museum of Art, ¥320) Unfortunately, the staff chatting (quite loudly) at the counter that day and a passerby wearing super noisy boots and talking nonsense really made it difficult to appreciate the collection... (No photography of the exhibits in the museum, no filming of the relocated buildings) Date of visit: 250522 (Original)

Due to time constraints, I didn't go inside to explore. If you're visiting Toyama Castle Park, you can arrange a visit. (Translated by Google) This museum exhibits many works by French painter Millet and other landscape painters known as the Barbizon school. It is a very small museum, consisting of one room for permanent exhibitions and another room for temporary exhibitions. However, the collection is wonderful, especially Millet's ``Sheep Shearing Girl''. It's not crowded even on holidays, and you can admire many famous items to your heart's content for a very reasonable price of 300 yen. There is also an audio guide. It's located in a corner of a somewhat deserted arcade shopping street, and if you don't know about it, you might just walk right past it, but the landmark is the reproduction of Millet's painting displayed in the showcase. As it is located in a shopping district, there are many cafes and restaurants around, and the Toyama City Glass Art Museum is also about a 5-minute walk away. Toyama Castle and Toyama International Conference Center are also within walking distance. From Toyama Station, take the tram to Nakamachi (Nishimachi Kita) Station, and from there it's about a 3-minute walk. It's located in an arcade shopping street, so it's comfortable even on rainy or snowy days. There is no private parking lot, but there are many paid parking lots nearby for your convenience. The museum is closed on Mondays, but there are other temporary closing days as well. The latest information is published on Facebook, so please check it in advance. Photography is not allowed inside the museum, but there are several days throughout the year where you can take pictures. The attached photo was taken at that time. It's well worth a visit to Toyama, as you can easily and calmly enjoy many masterpieces that could be housed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris or the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in the United States.

(Translated by Google) Millet's Shearer and several other works, as well as works by other artists, are on display. Those with even a passing interest in art will likely recognize some of the pieces. While famous works are important in an art museum, I also believe that creating an atmosphere conducive to focused viewing is crucial. It was a wonderful opportunity to quietly and leisurely appreciate the works. I was told they belonged to a local bank, and while expressing my gratitude for their generous donation, I decided to have lunch at a nearby restaurant (which I understand is intended to contribute to local revitalization). I highly recommend this stop if tourists stop by Toyama and have time to explore the city. There are plenty of places to eat nearby, and the Daiwa Department Store is also located there. The reason I didn't go there for over 10 years was because I was under the impression that all the paintings on display were reproductions. (Because the pictures displayed next to the entrance were all replicas made using the latest technology to look exactly like the real thing, so I mistakenly thought the inside of the museum was the same...) I was able to see Millet's painting for only 300 yen. (The pride of Toyama is thanks to the Hokuriku Bank.) For some reason, they said it was OK to take photos on this day, so I took the opportunity to take some photos. There are few customers, so you can enjoy the show at your leisure. I was also satisfied with the special exhibition displaying works by Tomio University students. It's a hidden spot. The locker is the type where you can put ¥100. I'll be back. The toilets are separate for men and women and clean. If you want to go on an art tour, we recommend purchasing the "Art Town Tour Passport" issued by Toyama Prefecture. *3pt coupon for ¥600. GALERIE MILLET is 1pt. Thank you for the wonderful time. Museums
The Shusui Museum of Art, located in Japan, is a unique museum dedicated entirely to swords. Its collection of over 200 pieces spans more than 1,000 years of history, showcasing blades from the Heian era to decorative weapons made during periods of peace. The museum attracts visitors from all over the country, including fans inspired by the popular Touken Ranbu video game. Additionally, it offers Japanese sword polishing demonstrations and hosts sword-fighting workshops on certain days of the month.
Didn't see anything as due to a special exhibit they removed the samurai stuff for a month. Lady was nice enough to explain to me beforehand.

No swords when I went, but there was a lovely exhibit of art and porcelain. Lady at the front was very rude when I asked where the swords went. Wouldn't even engage in my question.

(Translated by Google) At a museum that exhibits Japanese swords, I think it would be a good idea to go to the theater room to see the points of appreciation before seeing the actual swords. You will be able to appreciate the charm of Japanese swords as works of art. By the time you finish watching it, you'll probably forget about the real world. If possible, I would have liked to have been able to pick up something that looked close to the real thing and actually hold it. (Translated by Google) Revisited September 2025 I visited "Discover! The Beauty of Japanese Swords." It was a weekday after the summer holidays, but I was surprised to see a fair number of customers. There are a lot of people interested in Japanese swords. This time, there were fewer koshirae. The "Mushizukuri Wakizashi Koshirae" is an interesting koshirae. Revisited February 2025 I visited the second half of "Japanese Sword Story II." Once again, I was captivated by the beauty of the koshirae. I visited for the first time to see Japanese swords. I arrived after 10:00 on a weekday, thinking I'd be the first there, but there was someone there before me. The facility is very clean. It's wonderful. The theater room on the first floor features a video introducing the museum's concept and the highlights of the special exhibition, so it's a good place to start. (Translated by Google) Takamura Ushihito is a Japanese painter born in Toyama. He was drafted during the Pacific War and sent to the southern battlefields. After returning to Japan, he continued to live a wandering life while continuing to paint his own unique style of painting. Ushihito's paintings, such as his depictions of women, have a similar atmosphere to Munakata Shiko, but he also left behind many paintings that leave a strong impression on viewers with their detailed depictions and bold compositions. This museum opened in 1989 and is said to be the newest exhibition hall in the Toyama Folk Craft Village. It is a valuable museum where you can view many of Ushihito's terrifying works, but unfortunately it seems that not many people visit, perhaps due to its location. (Translated by Google) When I was searching for art museums in Toyama, the name ``The Cutest Art Museum in the World'' caught my eye. ...This is an art museum with such an extensive name. I decided to go there because the reviews were generally positive and the name of the building was very interesting. Although it looks like a modern one-story building from the outside, the inside is an old folk house that was relocated. The gap and the bold combination blend together to perfectly sublimate the idea that the building is also a work of art. The works on display are all representative of the taste of the first director, and include paintings, hanging scrolls, Japanese paintings, ceramics and other pottery, and Japanese dolls, all of which I am very satisfied with. What I personally found interesting was that impressions of paintings from previous exhibitions were displayed. I don't often have the opportunity to exchange opinions about paintings, so I found it interesting that there was something I could relate to.

It is a beautiful building with a collection of Japanese paintings and other items on display, which can be viewed free of charge. Personally, hanging scrolls and such are normally hung and displayed, eh? Do I have to put it in a glass case and control the temperature, humidity and UV rays? I was a little concerned 😂 Is that a bit loose? It was a museum that made me think of how cute it was. The toilets were super clean, so I had the impression that I'd rather use this one than the one at Mizuhashi Station. The parking lot is next to the building, so you can come as long as you like.👍 (Original)
