Toyama Bay is a large bay known for its abundance of firefly squid and scenic views. It is famous for producing a variety of wild fish in winter, making it a paradise for seafood lovers. The region offers sublime pleasures including food, architecture, craftsmanship, and history. With water depths over 1,000m, it's considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world.
Biolumineszénz. Between March and June, thousands of bioluminescent firefly squid come together in a stunning electric-blue display that is one of the most arresting and colourful marvels on Earth.

(Translated by Google) Toyama Prefecture changed from Etchu to Toyama after the Meiji Restoration, so I think Toyama Bay was named after the Meiji Restoration. Until the Edo period, the name Ariiso Sea appeared, but since the concept did not refer to Toyama Bay as a whole, I suspect that it was not treated as a bay until the early modern period. The water depth is over 1,000m. The water that flows from the mountains at an altitude of 3,000 meters flows through the rivers and flows into the area, along with abundant nutrients. As a result, many delicious fish such as yellowtail, yellowtail, firefly squid, white shrimp, sweet shrimp, astragalus, and red snow crab are landed. There are also spots where mirages occur. It recently joined the ``World's Most Beautiful Bay Club''. Efforts have been made to improve the landscape, such as cleaning the beach and lowering the tetrapods below the water surface, but it feels like we are only halfway through. There are many anglers, but if you're looking to catch some fish, it's definitely better to go to the Noto Peninsula. Unfortunately, the number of fish that can be caught by cast fishing from the beach seems to be thinner than in the past. Scenic spot
Amaharashi Coast, located within the Noto Peninsula Quasi-National Park, offers breathtaking views of rocky islets and the majestic Tateyama Mountains. This picturesque coastline has been recognized as one of Japan's top beaches and has inspired poets throughout history. The famous Onna Iwa rocks against the backdrop of the snow-capped 3,000-meter Tateyama Mountain Range make for a stunning sight that attracts photographers from all over Japan.
Magnificent spot for some stunning photos of the woman's rock against the backdrop of Tateyama. Be sure to come on a clear and sunny day for the best views and pictures. Other than the coast itself, there's also a visitor centre that offers good panoramic views over the coast and a small store to buy local specialities. Do note that the place is slightly crowded, so expect to wait a little while for a parking spot if you're driving.

A very nice spot in Toyama where you can enjoy a stunning view of the Japanese Alps, the sea, and trains passing by — all in one frame. It’s a must-visit when in Toyama. Highly recommended to everyone! Be sure to check the train schedule in advance and reserve your photo spot for the best experience.

Beautiful coastal line where you can see the magnificent Sea of Japan. There is a beautiful walking foot path also along this coastal line to enjoy a stroll. Also opposite to This, there is a cafe shop from where you can sit and enjoy the view of the sea while sipping coffee or tea or while having ice cream. There are also toilets and a good place to sit and enjoy the view.

Walking distance from Amaharashi station to the point of the scene. Cloudy on Oct 22, 2025 but you can see the shadow of mountain a little bit. Not bad The train will come in every 1.30 hr.
Chutapha C — Google review
Stunning views of the Onnaiwa Rock, with the Tateyama Mountains in the background. The area is walking distance from Amaharashi Station, which in turn is accessible from Takaoka via the Himi Line. The beach is sandy, so be careful when trying to walk on the rocks as the sand may affect your balance while walking. There are lots of ducks swimming which makes for a charming sight. There is also a nearby roadside station where you can have snacks and buy souvenirs. The roadside station also has an observatory deck. Please consult the train timetables so that you can plan your visit, if visiting by train.

Such a picturesque little corner. Unfortunately weather was bad, so we couldn't see any snowy mountain, but still worth it. The small shrine, the cave, the railway, the islet and the landscape all mixed together create such a perfect synergy
Andrea R — Google review
A short distance walk to Amaharashi JR station. Train passes right next to the coast. Beautiful location to see the Alps nearby. Unfortunately, no snow caps were seen during our visit. There's a nearby restaurant to recharge yourself and admire the landscape view at the same time. Visited on October 22 ,2025

Museums
The Toyama Glass Art Museum, located in the modern Kirari Building designed by architect Kuma Kengo, is home to a remarkable collection of contemporary glass art from both Japanese and international artists. The museum features permanent exhibitions such as the Collection Exhibition, Glass Art Passage, and the Glass Art Garden showcasing works by renowned artist Dale Chihuly.
This museum is fun to visit, it also have a library inside. The whole building has a lot of natural lighting, making photos look amazing at many angles. The use of wood and glass makes the overall design minimalist and clean. The glass installation is so colorful and looks mesmerizing. There's also special exhibitions from time to time. I made my own glass bead bracelet at the gift store, wish I could buy some of those beautiful glass deco. the staffs are super friendly.

Architecturally, this building is remarkable – combining historical charm with a modern sense of space and light. It houses several well-curated exhibitions and galleries, each offering a different cultural perspective. The top floor is dedicated to the art of glass and glassblowing, featuring a thoughtfully designed exhibition with impressive glass installations that highlight both craftsmanship and creativity. While admission is somewhat on the expensive side, the overall experience offers a lot of cultural and artistic value. The lower levels include public libraries for both adults and children, providing a quiet and welcoming space for reading and relaxation. We spent over an hour there browsing through books and enjoying the calm atmosphere. Overall, a visit is worthwhile for anyone with an interest in art, design, or architecture.
Yasmin G — Google review
I never know glass can be made into such as amazing artwork. The admission is only 200yen. The paid exhibition spends onto floor 4 and 6. I wish there are more items on display. The building itself consist of a public library as well.
Gordon K — Google review
I only can appreciate some of the larger scale glass are or the glass sculpture with the light effect. For other smaller glass sculptures on display, which to me, it’s a dust collector. I’m apologize for not understand the art form or the creativity of those artists. One good and positive thing about this museum is the price of snacks like cheesecake and chestnut 🎂 cake etc is very fairly priced also very delicious! Coffee is also very good!
Steven C — Google review
Beautiful museum to visit. The architecture of the building with its wood and glass structures evokes a calm and peaceful feel blending in with the beauty of the glass art pieces. There was a piano recital in the foyer when we visited. In all a must visit when visiting Toyama.
Yvonne C — Google review
The building itself is a stunning piece of architecture by the renowned architect Kengo Kuma, with a façade inspired by the shimmering ice dikes of the Tateyama mountains and warm cedar interiors. Inside, you’ll discover an impressive permanent glass art exhibition and a beautiful library. A must-visit when in Toyama!
Addaia M — Google review
The museum looks big. Only 3 floors (Starts from Floor 6, then 4, and 3). Some art prices are really spectacular. The other floors are just book stores. There is also a coffee shop inside and has a nice menu. They serve in one of the best glass crockeries. It’s allowed to take pics Inside, but not allowed to share on any social media channels or on google. So, I won’t be able to upload pics here 😊. There is also a museum shop inside where you can purchase some souvenirs and other glass selections.
Lakshmi — Google review
Architect: Kengo Kuma. Love the sleek exterior juxtaposed by the rustic interior of cedar beams. Entrance fee: we only paid 200yen but you could pay more if you'd like to catch the special exhibition. Exhibits: the permanent exhibition of dave chihuly works was a crowd pleaser and certainly eye catching. However I preferred the understated glass art by japanese, korean, and czech artists - photography was not allowed for that exhibition though. Since toyama has a rich glassmaking history, I think it's worth visiting this museum. Dont miss the gift store too!

The Museum of Folklore (Toyama Municipal Folkcraft Village) is a nostalgic attraction that offers a glimpse into the past. Visitors can explore old thatched houses with the smell of hearth smoke, and see black telephones and other vintage items. The facility includes various exhibits such as Toyama's drug dealer museum, art museum, and old folk houses. It takes about 2 hours to fully experience everything.
I absolutely loved this place. Better value for money than the glass museum. Lots and lots of interesting articles of old and culture. Beautiful greenery and stunning views. It’s a must visit. Try and complete all the 7 exhibitions.
Emmanuel — Google review
Great museum that helps you get a glimpse at local life, folk art as well as high level ceramics and works of a local artist Takamura Gyujin depicting myths and legends. You can walk up the hill and get a great view of Toyama as well as the 500 Buddha hill. Wear comfortable shoes as you'll have to remove them in evey building. The only minus is that some exhibitions have no information in English but its worth a visit none the less. Ticket to all exhibitions only 530 yen.

This is worth visiting to get to know about Toyama’s traditional/folk history and culture, a little of everything about Toyama. You can also see the 500 arhats at the Chokeiji Zen Temple. Surprisingly, the temple also has a great view of Toyama City skyline and the Shinkansen.

Toyama Castle Ruin Park is a historical site in Toyama, Japan, featuring a reconstructed castle tower that now houses the Toyama City Local History Museum. The museum showcases the culture and history of Toyama, displaying ancient documents and arts related to the region. The park is known for its well-landscaped surroundings and beautiful Japanese garden, making it a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in early to mid-April.
We came here in mid April and unfortunately the sakuras were long gone. However the castle is very scenic. We saw some nice tulips planted on the outside of the castle and took some nice photos here. The area was not touristy and was very quiet. We enjoyed the peace and breeze exploring around.

A very scenic area in the heart of Toyama. Definitely worth taking a stroll through just to unwind or take some pretty pictures. There is also two museums, though I only visited one. One is a reconstruction of the old Toyama castle.

I happened to chance upon a number of cranes resting near the trees at this castle park and was amazed there’s this particular one which stood in the middle of the pond for awhile despite my presence. It appears that the pond and the trees near this castle park has inspired me and sparked my passion to brush some paintings out of these photos.

Kansui Park is a popular destination located near Toyama Station's north gate, offering scenic mountain views and grassy areas for leisure activities. The park capitalizes on the history of Fugan Canal, once a boat harbor extending 5.1 kilometers to the sea. Visitors can enjoy attractions such as Fountain Square, Fugan Suijo Line boat cruises, and Starbucks Coffee with breathtaking views.
Beautiful site, every season have different face especially during the Sakura blooming season. Spend some time walk around this park to relax or exercise! Or you can take a boat ride it will last 30 to 40 minutes! The Starbucks in this park are so cool whirl most beautiful Starbucks! You can judge by yourself!

We were randomly taking a stroll in the beautiful city of Toyama and then we saw this park on the sign board and thought of going to the park. It was such a sweet surprise. One of the best parks it was with a beautiful canal throughout the park. There was a fountain show too with music, it was very nice. It’s a huge park and plenty of space throughout the park. Do visit if you are closer to Toyama Station.

The Toyama City Hall observation tower offers a free elevator ride up to 70 meters above sea level, providing panoramic views of the city and, on clear days, the stunning Tateyama Mountain Range. Visitors can park in the underground lot and receive a stamp for free parking when visiting the rooftop deck. The location is ideal for enjoying views of the alps and city, especially during cherry blossom season when rows of Sakura trees line the nearby river.
A recommended viewpoint of the city and Toyama Castle. Admission is free. Beautiful views of Toyama city, and on a clear day you can see the beautiful mountain range.
Thananat S — Google review
Consider it's free to entery, it's a great place to view the city on a lovely day. We were lucky with the weather, and it was a short wait for the lift going to the observation floor also. Perhaps not many know about it, so it wasn't crowded at all. Since the observation floor isn't that big, a good 10 minute visit would be enough. Right in front of the building, there is a river with cherry blossom tress on both sides, perfect for the camera. We actually spent more time taking photos downstairs.
Le C — Google review
The city hall observation tower is definitely worth a visit. Take the special elevator to the top, where you can enjoy a breathtaking, panoramic view of the entire city. I absolutely loved it!
Peter S — Google review
Easy access. Tower has 360 view of Toyama. The view tower is enclosed, so not affected by weather. On the flip side, one also do not get the enjoyment of sights and sound of the city at night. Too insulated. Night view is nice but also marred by the well lit interior, which is a huge distraction. Would return during day to get another view. Day is definitely better. A/C on. No light distractions.

On May 1st. Before guiding our guests from Nagoya to Tateyama, we took them to Toyama Bay, but due to the haze, we couldn’t see the Tateyama mountain range from the coast. However, afterward, we visited this observation tower, and they were delighted, saying, “The mountains looked so close and clear from here!”

The Toyama Port Observation Deck offers a stunning panoramic view of the Nihon Sea and the surrounding mountains. Situated in the heart of Toyama deep sea channels, this vantage point provides a glimpse into the biotic environment that fosters Japanese glass shrimp and snow crab breeding. Accessible via stairs, visitors can enjoy the picturesque sight of Toyama Bay while taking in the natural beauty of the area.
Bit of a climb but the view was cute and not so many tourists, and it’s for free.

On May 1st, we took our guests from Nagoya to Toyama Bay before heading to Tateyama. If we had been lucky, we might have seen the Tateyama Mountain Range, but unfortunately, it wasn’t visible that day. Later, however, we visited this observation tower, where we were able to enjoy a view of the city and even catch a faint glimpse of the mountains. You have to climb some stairs to reach the top, but it’s definitely worth the effort.
ITokyoTravel-iTokyoDrive T — Google review
An observation deck 25 meters high. There is no elevator, so you must climb the stairs. You can view the fishing port, oil base, and townscape.
K2 — Google review
Lovely view, but there's not a whole lot there... there's no elevator, so not very accessable, and the building isn't air conditioned, which makes it difficult on a hot day. It is free to go up, there are no staff or anything, and it's nice there are free binoculars.
Hercules W — Google review
Not crowded to visit. We got free Tram tickets and have a round trip to see the Toyama Harbour from thus vantage point. Mind you there are 101 steps to climb to the top, if I count it correctly during my exhaust walk up. A free telescope can be used to observe the area. There is historical stores and houses to explore. Hidden gem of Toyama.

Its nice place to see the port area. The histpry of russia and Toyama trade works are written in the top obaervatory. We can see all the old houses in the village mostly looks like a russian village. Uozu Aquarium is a compact aquatic attraction that showcases both marine and freshwater creatures, including a diverse collection of fish species. The facility also boasts a captivating penguin exhibit where visitors can observe these charismatic birds being fed. Moreover, guests can explore an underwater viewing tunnel for a unique perspective on life beneath the surface. Although renovations or updates may be necessary, Uozu Aquarium remains an affordable destination suitable for families with children seeking to bond over nature's wonders.
A small yet impressively diverse aquarium in terms of species variety. Many of the animals on display are ones we’ve never seen in any other aquarium before. The deep-sea section is particularly fascinating and a true highlight. The entire exhibit is very child-friendly, with tanks, aquariums, and terrariums thoughtfully positioned at the perfect height for young visitors. You’ll spend around an hour here, making it ideal for a short visit. On the downside, some of the tanks are quite small and a bit outdated. Nevertheless, it’s a great spot for a brief stopover and definitely worth a visit.

Honestly it's pretty great, I've visited a lot of aquariums and this is really the perfect size and location if you have (younger) kids or just for couple hours, it's not like a full day affair that the bigger aquariums are. It's interesting and just long enough for them to stay intrigued, there's a wide selection of weird fish, large central viewing pool with a tunnel, some jelly fish, amazonian / tropical jungle river animals, and even doctor fish you can touch at the end which kids will love. Couple seals and even penguins. Theres a place to each outside serving your standard selection of ramen, udon , curry etc basically easy staples at reasonable price. A large park right next to the place with some slides and activities and an amusement park ( free to enter) across the street with various rides and a bug trampoline for kids up to 12 years old can use. All in all totally worth your time for a easy relaxing day out with minimal logistics for a family or just a date.

Compact aquarium with interesting activities and I really enjoyed the variety of sea creatures at the aquarium even though i couldn’t understand most of the information in Japanese (I used google translate for most). Even on a weekend, the crowd was manageable. My children enjoyed it very much!

It is said to be the oldest aquarium in Japan. The explanations are very concise and easy to understand, and are designed to allow visitors to learn while having fun. Although the building is old, it is well maintained and clean, and you can tour the entire aquarium in an hour.

Unazuki Onsen Snow Park offers a nostalgic, old-fashioned ski resort experience with the convenience of a free lift from Unazuki Onsen. The reasonably large ski area features affordable half-day tickets and ski rentals, making it an ideal spot for beginners and families. Private lessons are available for first-time skiers, and the friendly staff speaks English. In addition to skiing, visitors can enjoy sledging and warm drinks at the cafe near the free chair lift.
Free chair lift up to the cafe and rental area. Can rent sledges for some simples fun if you are not skiing, and some nice warm drinks and food to warm up afterwards. The person and the cafe/rental desk was very friendly and spoke good English. Good thing to do in Unazuki in the winter when there is not much else.

It was late in the season, and the boards on some slopes could get damaged due to melting snow, so I was advised that this course would be better. I was surprised that both parents and children were able to ski in just 2 hours in the morning! More than anything, I was happy that I had fallen in love with skiing (I was only aware that I wasn't good at skiing after taking a group lesson on a high school field trip), but even though I was a middle-aged beginner, I went up to the lift by myself after the lesson. You can learn to slide down again and again! The child asked again on the second day that he wanted to participate in the lesson. We purchased a lift ticket to the top at the discretion of the coach in the midst of heavy snowfall! (Children: 500 yen for a half day) With the fun instruction, they were able to ski on forest roads and seemed to have gained a lot of confidence. The people at the lift and ski center are calm and kind. It wasn't crowded and the ramen and coffee were delicious, so I'm glad my child's ski debut was at Unazuki! Next year I will increase the number of nights. Matsukawa Park, situated in central Toyama City, is renowned for its stunning cherry blossom trees that line the Matsukawa River for about 3km. The park offers boat cruises to enjoy the illuminated blossoms in the evening. Once a part of the old Jinzu River and now forming the outer moat of Toyama Castle, this park is a popular spot for locals to unwind and is considered one of the best places in the prefecture to view cherry blossoms.
Convenience location at the heart of Toyama City. Very quiet, especially during weekdays. People can leisurely walk around the surroundings of the Toyama Castle as well as observe a group of cranes who live on the big trees adjacent to the castle.

Sad to come here when there are no more cherry blossoms (end May). Very normal park as everything is green. The trees near the castle is home to many birds. Not sure what are their names but I suspect they are herons. If you read this and you know the name of the bird, can you kindly leave a review. Thank you.

Nestled in the heart of nature, Toyama Family Park is a delightful destination for families seeking a day of fun and relaxation. This expansive park features an array of native Japanese species and offers engaging experiences like pony rides and a petting zoo, making it perfect for animal lovers.
This family park zoo is a treasure trove of many animals! Despite the light rain, we were lucky to see red squirrel, wild boar, giraffes, zebras, pink flamingos many more! There is a petting area for goats as well. Highlight is the black bear. It's a perfect blend of education and entertainment for the whole family.

A very well organized and maintained family-oriented park. The zoo is reasonably priced with a great variety of animals. Giraffe and wolf feeding (free) is possible during weekends and national holidays. Surprisingly the zoo holds a large numbear of different chicken that relates to ancient Japanese time. Some chicken were bred for appearance, some are for their sound, and of course some are for food. Giraffe diner here offer really delicious food. Overall this is a great park to hangout for a full day.

Assalamualaikum brother. This zoo has many interesting animal and children will enjoy to see them. The entrance fee is 500¥ for adult and Junior high school below is free. Another good point is the parking area , it was free and very spacious space so you can park easily. This family park is really for relaxing your time with your family.
Asrul S — Google review
It is a zoo in Toyama. The place is quite huge. A lot of interesting animal collections. It is easily navigated. However I think the overall place and the animal situations is under maintenance. Some animals look malnourished. Soma cages was not so clean. It is probably the financial situation. The park also equipped with some attractions such as merry go round, mini roller coaster, and tiny pedal boat in a small lake. You can enjoy the attractions for 200 yen flat. For the boat 800 yen for 15 minutes. At the time we came, it was almost empty so the place felt like our own. We spent all day to enjoy all the park offered. The entrance ticket for the zoo is 500 yen. If you come using public transport please planned it carefully cause only few busses go there. Recommended route is to stop at Kureha station and take the city bus which cost only 100 yen. However this bus only run 3-4 times a day from the station.
