Riverbanks Zoo & Garden in South Carolina is a popular tourist destination that offers a unique combination of a botanical garden and a mid-size zoo. The 70-acre themed gardens feature over 4,200 species of native and exotic plants, including a rose garden, Asian garden, Walled Garden, and Waterfall Junction with children's attractions. The 170-acre zoo is home to more than 2,000 creatures from various habitats.
We visited the zoo on a Sunday. It was moderately busy but not too bad. It had a variety of exhibits. Definitely could easily spend 2-4 hours here. Lots to see, lots of food and drink options. Tickets were $25 per person. We really enjoyed our afternoon. The bathrooms were clean, lines were short. We visited the botanical gardens in the back. Those are not worth seeing. Very basic, nothing special. Lots of walking to get to them… so I’d skip if we returned. Great place for family & kids or even just a date spot. My only complaint is the special exhibits close early, and earlier than they state. I wanted to ride a camel and see the giraffes up close and both closed “at 6” and actually closed at 5:30. So we missed that opportunity.

Wow, so much fun! Lush well planned grounds, flowers and butterflies everywhere. The animals look fantastic and have ample enclosures. The aquarium is wonderful. The sky ride to the botanical gardens over the Edisto River is really nice with great views. Gardens are a must see!
Chipco2 — Google review
We bought tickets online ahead of time and they were slightly cheaper and you paid for parking right then too. The park was great, we went for my son's first birthday and just walked around and enjoyed everything!! I used to go there as a kid so I wanted to take him there as well. We drove from Savannah, GA! Would definitely recommend for a family trip. Great place, looks clean, nice staff, easy pathways, animals look well taken care of. Fun all around!!
Nicole Z — Google review
We were visiting from out of town and looking for something to do and what a pleasant surprise we loved the zoo and gardens! There's lots of animals to see, some we hadn't seen in any zoos back home. Then you can take their new sky tram (included in ticket) to visit the garden side. I'm not a huge fan of plants so I didn't have high expectations, but that side was excellent as well! Right now they have Lego sculptures on display which is fun. Lots of paths to explore and a huge kid area with water features (seasonal) and other fun things. If I were local I would definitely buy a membership.
Ashley C — Google review
Always love a trip to the Zoo with the family. This time we headed to the botanical gardens. Did not disappoint. Amazing staff, lots to see and the air ride over the lake was great amd saved us a walk between the Zoo and botanical gardens. Will definitely return in the spring.
Keisa C — Google review
Went on a fairly busy day, but were able to move through everything in about 3.5 hrs with two young kids. Loved this zoo. Its not too big and provides a lot of shade on the paths and theres a good mix of indoor/outdoor exhibits, so going in summer won't be horrible. Theres a lot of events for kids like animal feeding, obstacle courses, carousel, and lots of food/bathroom stations scattered around. For 2 adults and 2 kids, it was over $100 to get in, but that didnt include the extra costs for animal feeding and extra events.
Andrew Y — Google review
Such an amazing zoo. Compared to San Diego Zoo, a world class zoo, I enjoyed this one more. The enclosures and exhibits for the animals were really nice. There was a water splash area in the back of the botanical garden that the kids really liked. BRING TOWELS AND A SWIM SUIT FOR THE LITTLES! We also really enjoyed the ropes course for the older kids and the ropes course for the younger kids too. Both were very inexpensive, relatively speaking.
A C — Google review
We had so much fun at the zoo. The most exciting part was riding to go to the garden. We never did that before. It was nice seeing all the animals.

Park
Nature & Parks
Columbia Canal and Riverfront Park is a picturesque green space located at the headwaters of the Congaree River. It offers various outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and picnicking. The park features historic landmarks like the Columbia canal, textile mill, and waterworks. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the paved waterfront path or attend outdoor concerts at the brick amphitheater. The park also provides scenic views of the river and opportunities for swimming.
This is a beautiful spot to get outside and enjoy some fresh air! Whether you’re walking along the Congaree River or riding bikes, the path offers stunning views as it runs between the river and the canal. The towering trees and peaceful scenery make it a really enjoyable place to spend time. We visited in the evening and noticed it can get a bit busy with families, but there’s still plenty of space to spread out. There’s also a small workout area for adults if you want to add a little exercise to your walk, and bathrooms are conveniently located before you cross the bridge to the main path. It’s a well-maintained park with plenty to offer, and we’d highly recommend it if you’re looking for a relaxing walk, bike ride, or just a quiet spot to enjoy nature.
Melissa J — Google review
Awesome trail with a wild surprise! Columbia Canal and Riverfront Park is one of my favorite spots to run. The trail is smooth, scenic, and perfect for a peaceful workout or walk. You get a mix of nature, water views, and history all in one place. What made my last visit unforgettable? I spotted a real alligator swimming along the canal! Totally unexpected and a reminder that you’re in nature’s backyard. Don’t worry—it kept its distance, but it definitely made the experience exciting! Highly recommend this park if you’re in Columbia—whether you’re a runner, a walker, or just looking to enjoy a bit of wildlife in the city. 📍Trail: Clean & wide 🌳 Scenery: Green, peaceful, with water views 🐊 Bonus: Surprise gator sighting!
Roaring S — Google review
We enjoyed a wonderful time walking some of the beautiful river front trail and resting at times in the benches. A safe and beautiful place to visit and you might even pack a lunch. The rest rooms were clean. People of all ages were tubing down the river too!

Nice place to stop by good for a walk , bike or a run. The view on both sides is peaceful with water flowing on its way. Lots of benches to relax or read a book. They have hammock stand just bring you hammock and enjoy the water sound or take a nap. They have clean restrooms available. Plenty of parking space.

Pretty cool spot. It has an interesting history. The river seemed pretty clean. Utilized by local walkers and cyclists. People having picnics. And I really like that there are hammock frames down by the river.

Its a beautiful peaceful walk along the river. We saw Blue herons, turtles and the Rocky Shoals Spider Lily ( a rare species not to be picked). Beautiful and relaxing.

Botanical garden
Riverbanks Botanical Garden, located within Riverbanks Zoo, is a 170-acre outdoor paradise that showcases over 6,000 plants and animals. The garden features themed areas for both native and exotic plants, providing an immersive experience for visitors of all ages. In addition to the diverse flora, there are eight distinct animal habitats and seven award-winning themed gardens to explore. For families with kids, the seasonal splash park known as Waterfall Junction offers a fun way to cool off during hot summer days.
Fabulous spot! Great gardens and lots of things for the kids. They have a water park there where kids can run around in the fountains and plenty of seating for the parents. Take a tram over to the zoo for free to see the Otters and sea lions!
Gerard D — Google review
Overall good experience. Wish there was better signs for directions and for the tram. Also wish there would have been more animals, there was a lot missing and that was sad for my kids and myself honestly. Bathrooms were decent and clean though.
Moriah S — Google review
It's a great place for all ages. I enjoy a walk through the botanical garden in every season. There is a lot of construction going on with the creation of the saluda sky ride. The woodland path is closed due to that.
Marguerite S — Google review
It is amazing. There was a time when I was worried for the future of the zoo because a lot of things were dated and not as nice as they used to be. Riverbanks has outdone itself. The staff are so sweet. It's like visiting the Chick-fil-A of zoos. I have 4 kids (8,5,2, and 9m) they all loved it. The best part of the zoo is definitely waterfall junction! All of my kids played for hours. That space is so well thought out for families of all sizes and needs. The aquarium is awesome, without kids it would be my favorite spot! We packed a lunch, snacks, and plenty of water because I'm not a fan of stadium prices. It's not even a complaint because at least it's allowed.
Nancy G — Google review
Great experience with granddaughter. We have a membership & go often. Zoo employees are the best...helpful and informative. Buy a membership with extra activities included like carousel rides, birds feeding. Granddaughter rode carousel 5 times that day.
Sharon H — Google review
This was our second time there and had a great time with our 5 year old. There are a good amount of animals but the park is not spread out too much so you can get through it quickly if you want (you don't have to though). Park seems pretty well maintained and they have another area with Botanical Gardens, an open space for kids along with a waterfall area, a little river, some normal slides, and other fun things for them to do. Between this and the zoo you can keep your kids entertained pretty much all day if you want to. When we went, the new skyline was just finished, and needed maintenance. When that's up and running it will be a very nice way to connect the botanical gardens / kids area to the rest of the zoo. The current way being a longer walk or a tram ride can each take a decent amount of time. Please note that you can definitely bring in snacks for you and your kids along with some drinks and maybe even food for lunch if you really want to. I don't know how much they really check for coolers but we had no problem bringing our bag in. Also they have nice water refilling stations around the zoo and they'll even give you a cup of ice not one of the restaurants if you ask. Really great service overall. We may look into getting a membership for next year.
Justin G — Google review
Love the areas. Greatest area for kids to cool off. Remember to have them in a swim suit or change of clothes and a towel.

West Columbia Riverwalk Park and Amphitheater, located on the Congaree River, is a versatile outdoor space that offers something for everyone. It features an impressive amphitheater and connects with the Three Rivers Greenway, providing ample opportunities for leisurely strolls or invigorating runs along the river. The park is also home to Carraway Park and Leos Landing, inclusive playgrounds designed to accommodate children of all abilities.
Such a cute little park! Came here on a whim and had a nice little experience. The amphitheatre is a nice place to sit and view the river (I'm not sure if they have shows there or not as I just went on a random weekday). There are benches for sitting near the water if you want to get a closer view, and there's actually steps down directly to the water where I saw lots of people bringing down tubes to float down the river (seemed so nice, would love to try!). It was a lovely little summer break!
Colleen E — Google review
I drove from Charlotte to visit the West Columbia Riverwalk, which is about a 1 hour and 45-minute drive. I went alone to try something different from Carowinds or Wet 'n Wild, wanting to enjoy some time in nature. I didn't make an online reservation. Upon arrival, I found that they only accept cash, and there is no ATM on-site. They offer various tube options, and I decided to rent the $35 tube. There's also a $5 rope fee available. A life jacket is required, and I brought my own. Parking is free, with options ranging from across the street to a 5-minute walk, depending on where you park. I had a great time and highly recommend bringing a paddle or float stick. I have float sticks, but silly me left them in the car by accident. The site also has bathrooms and a shower to clean off after your trip. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and highly recommend this place!

I’ve been waiting to experience the Riverwalk in Columbia, SC, and it was absolutely worth it! The moment I stepped onto the path, I was greeted with pure tranquility. The combination of nature, fresh air, and the calming sound of the river made it such a peaceful escape. Everything was well-kept and clean, which made the walk even more enjoyable. The sights along the way were simply beautiful — from the flowing water to the natural greenery, it felt like a little hidden gem right in the city. I left feeling refreshed and already know I’ll be back again soon. Highly recommend if you need a dose of nature and serenity! 🌿✨

Black Rooster

Italian restaurant
Black Rooster is a lively bar with stunning city views, especially from its rooftop overlooking the river and the cityscape. The self-proclaimed "Frenchish" spot offers traditional French cuisine like quiche, croque monsieur, tuna tartare, and mussels. The menu features shareable plates and main courses catering to vegetarians, pescatarians, and carnivores. Indulge in half a dozen oysters before your main course.
Ventured across the river and Found Free parking near by. I went to the roof top To check out the views and service was super friendly. She gave me some great recommendations and provided great service. I started with the Hugo on the rocks and enjoyed the pear flavor although I prefer real glass over plastic. The beet salad was the highlight of my meal. I enjoyed it throughly and it was so simple. The dressing doesn’t overpower the dish, instead I felt like it accentuated the flavors. The pistachios added a hint of sweetness snd a delightful crunch. I also had the whipped feta and I couldn’t decide if I enjoyed the bread or the cheese more. Delightful experience.
Nik K — Google review
I recently dined solo here, and the service was easily the highlight of the experience. My server had a great attitude, was attentive, and made sure I was well taken care of. The space itself felt a bit cramped, the downstairs dining area could definitely benefit from a more open and refined layout. I initially ordered the Caesar salad, but the lettuce was wilted, likely from sitting under a heat source or soaking too long in dressing. Fortunately, the server was quick to remake it without hesitation, which I really appreciated. For drinks, the Hugo Spritz was refreshing and well-balanced. The Chrysalis cocktail, however, had an unpleasant chemical taste, almost like tire rubber, definitely a miss. I also tried the bolognese, which was pretty good. The noodles were slightly overcooked, but overall the flavor profile was very nice. Overall, the service was excellent and genuinely improved the experience, the food and atmosphere didn’t quite meet my expectations but I’ll try anything at least three times.

If you were looking at the menu, reviews and/or pictures and wondering if they have good food.. the answer is YES. The burger & fries ….. Please, do yourself a favor. GET IT! I do believe that this may be the absolute BEST burger/fry combination I’ve ever had! And honestly (I’m not a burger girl!) The cheese, the caramelized onions.. worth every calorie. The service was incredible! Grace was so sweet & attentive my entire visit. She played with babies, stood and listened while I talked her head off. The drinks were perfectly made. Don’t even get me started on THE PLAYLIST. I individually downloaded every single song. Then, to top it all off, the chocolate, strawberry dessert with mascarpone was absolute perfection! This is now my favorite place in Columbia. I would give it 10 stars if I could.

Had a nice dinner at Black Rooster. The staff was friendly. Had the Burrata to start - the meal was a good refresher but the Burrata could be of better quality. The main meals were equally tasty. The food preparation was timely! Would return.

Wife and I went just to try the place. We went to the roof top to get away from street noise. We started with drinks which unfortunately were very watered down. We then ordered the brisket burger and pasta. The brisket burger had no trditional brisket but supposedly had brisket mixed with the hamburger. We both love brisket and regularly smoke our own. Raw beef that could to used to make brisket is NOT brisket. Anyone that tell you different needs to return to culinary school. As expected it tasted like a cheap, very overcooked burger to us. Add insult to injury the fries the accompanied the hamburger were delivered cold. The pasta was under cooked far beyond Al dente and the rest of the dish was just as unremarkable as the mixed drinks. The menu promised elevated cuisine but delivered less than we have had a decent local restaurants for half the price. Based on our experience we cannot recommend this establishment.
Kevin S — Google review
Hubs and I went for birthday celebration and sat on the rooftop. Bar service only up there but it's no problem - order and pay at the bar and servers serve as usual. This Sicilian was blown away by the food, from apps to entrees to desserts. The rooftop is fun and servers were terrific. 10/10 will go again!
Pundah M — Google review
Switching from French cuisine to Italian was a smart move. My husband celebrated his birthday here and it was a really nice experience. I made reservations and let the staff know ahead of time that it was his birthday. Not to mention the hostesses were the sweetest young ladies ever and I hate I forgot to ask their names again before we left. Drew, our server was the absolute best! He was friendly, attentive, and not overbearing or bothersome. We started off with an awesome sparking water and antipasti charcuterie board and escargot. For our main dishes hubby had the scallops and pasta (sorry forgot the name) and I had soft shell crab. Both of these dishes were amazing. To end the night, Drew brought out the ricotta cake with berry sorbet and WOW that was good too. The entire experience from door to table was exceptional. The only thing I’d change is changing the bread to having crackers as a choice when serving the cheese or antipasti board. If it’s not raining , hit the rooftop, it’s beautiful up there. We spent over $100 without any alcohol.

Terra is a bistro with a Southern-leaning menu and skyline views. It offers a romantic atmosphere for couples and friends to enjoy. The restaurant's provisions are sourced from local farmers, ensuring fresh and high-quality ingredients. A wine distributor recommended Terra as a romantic Valentine's Day choice due to its world-class chef, farm-to-table food experience, and beautiful ambiance. The name 'Terra' means earth, symbolizing the grounded and lasting nature of relationships.
Terra was amazing. We had a large group and everyone raved about their meals. Meals we ordered and loved were the Steak Frites, Korean Short Rib Lettuce Wraps, and Chinese Braised Pork Belly. I got the Crispy Eggplant and it was phenomenal. It was actually crispy and not soggy. Desserts we chose were peanut butter pie with a lovely toasted marshmallow topping, a banana bread cake with ice cream and a cookie with Maker’s Mark ice cream. They had some very unusual ice cream flavors and dessert options. Several agreed they were all delicious, but the peanut butter pie was the best. The drink menu was also quite varied. The servers were exceptional and the atmosphere was comfortable yet elegant. If you’re in the Vista area of Columbia, you need to plan a meal at Terra. (I have no pics of the food. We all just dug in)

The lamb mac n cheese was absolutely AMAZING. Filipino chicken dumplings were also tasty. Our entrees, pan-seared flounder and spring lamb were superb! And the service was excellent! Highly recommended for a date night or double date!

Pleasant early Father’s Day dinner at this fine restaurant. The cocktails were excellent. We were a party of five. The lamb Mac was a group favorite; everyone enjoyed it. The house salad with goat cheese was also good. Two orders of the ribeye steak and fries were brought to our table. Perfect medium rare with excellent fries. My scallops were perfect. The lamb entree was also very good. The one thing I would like to add, apart from the excellent food was the time given to us at the table to talk and enjoy the atmosphere between drinks, appetizers, entrees and dessert. I was pleasantly surprised that we were not “rushed” out in any way. You don’t see that in many restaurants in the US. I will be returning, for sure

Nice Columbia restaurant. I've only been here a handful of times over the past ten years, but I've not been disappointed. The service is excellent. The drink selection is excellent. The food is great. If your are an amari fan, this place has a good selection - possibly the best I've found in the city. This is not a weekly date place for us (due to the price), but it fits the bill for an occasional special date option

I can not say enough thank yous to the Terra team. I had a last minute event come up for about 20-25 people that I needed and event space for. I sent an email via the Terra website explaining what type of event I was having and the number of quests and within the hour I received a response! Mike Lee and his team did PHENOMENAL! They were absolutely attentive and stayed in contact with me not only during the process but also the night of. They made sure that guest were aware of their tabs and the stipulation I had set in place in terms of beverages. I would like to also shout out Kathryn T. It is evident that when there is a great leader present (Mike Lee) employees are also amazing. Kathryn and Mike were both so patient and kind. When I walked in I needed to rearrange some tables in the event space and without a question Kathryn fixed the tables as I needed.Kathryn went ABOVE and BEYOND the night of the event as a server. I was slightly stressed about having to plan such a last minute event (about a week and half time to plan) and Mike Lee, Kathryn and everyone else on the Terra team made that night so beautiful and everything ran so smoothly I had no stress at all. Also, there is complimentary vallet which was also amazing as my guests did not have to worry about finding a parking spot. I look forward to doing business again in the near future with Mike Lee and the Terra team. Thank you all for your phenomenal service, kindness, patience and every other good thing you do and continue to do!

My partner and I just left this restaurant and I wanted to share our experience because we were looking forward to this and we left very disappointed. I want to start out by saying this was not a horrible experience, the atmosphere and ambience was very romantic and relaxing and the wine was exceptional, what was lacking was in the food and service. I had the scallops and he had the pork chop, all i could taste was salt in my food and his pork chop was unevenly cooked with parts of his pork chop being rare, medium, and well done/ dry. The service felt inattentive and we were there to celebrate my partners graduation and the experience felt unsatisfactory and was not worth the money we spent. We had a gift card that took 100 off and i still feel like we spent more money than what we got.

Restaurant
Compton's Kitchen is a traditional diner adorned with a modest wooden interior, serving delicious American comfort food. Established by Perry Compton in 1977, the eatery gained recognition for its delectable biscuits made from high-quality flour supplied by Allen Brothers Milling Company. Presently owned by Martha Cooke, this establishment continues to uphold the biscuit-making tradition. If you crave an affordable breakfast or lunch in a welcoming and well-maintained environment, Compton's Kitchen is the ideal choice.
Easy-going diner with very friendly service and tasty staples. We came on a Saturday morning and got in quick despite the restaurant being full. The prices were extremely reasonable. The portion sizes were generous as well. We really enjoyed the fresh, hot, fluffy biscuits!

First time here for breakfast. Angel did a wonderful job of waiting the entire dining area, as there must have been a no show. Generous portions at very reasonable prices. The only complaint was the biscuits. They always get high marks on reviews, but ours were stiff and dry. Mine had gravy so no problem. We'll try them again soon.

This is a great hidden gem. Everyone of the staff members, esp the cashier, were extremely friendly. You're greeted upon entering the building. I watched them interact with other customers and they knew names and took care with each thanking them for their business and asking them to come again. I ordered take out and did not wait long before having my order. My food was fresh when I got home, even though I made several stops. Everything was cooked to my specifics and I had more than enough to share with my mom. If you're looking for a cozy spot to eat for breakfast or lunch or need a catering service check this place out. Prices are reasonable either way.

Compton's does it once again! This time our company ordered catfish and meatloaf dinners. The candied yams were REAL potatoes, not canned. The collards were seasoned perfectly. Catfish was tender, and the cornbread is the BEST. THANK YOU ASIA

I couldn't decide between the ribeye plate or fried bologna plate....I'm sooooo glad I did!! It was worth every bit on that tastey, moist buttermilk biscuit 😋 I did start lusting after my neighbors French toast so I have to come back to satisfy that craving

My husband sent me a breakfast plate via Uber Eats. The food was delicious and the Uner drive was on time and very nice. Will definitely eat here and use Uber eats again!
